He was the only man who could get me up for a 9am lecture
Horn can talk the talk and walk the walk. He is a walking textbook. Cute too!

very good looking .....
Great lecture style! Very cute!
Inspiring lectures that were both informative and spectacular.
Fabulous lectures-the only class I could stay awake in!!

technicalities over content
Professor is godlike. Smartest professor around. Tough, but fair.
Bases work/exam on textbook facts while lectures consist of bizarre anecdotes.
good lectures, essay grading rough in class
very condescending/smug and a hard marker but sorta funny, good speaker
Lectures are packed with good info. However, the marking is a bit rough.
Notice he gets apprehensive when instructor evaluation sheets go around?
Dr.Horn is a very good speaker. I actually listened to his lectures and enjoyed going to class. Essay time is stressful...He is very tough. Good luck getting an A in this class.

Meh at best. Overly obsessed with war and money.
Great speaker, favorite class of the term, kinda cute too
Good teacher, very knowledgable and clear, enthiuastic speaker. Sign up for his class, best history prof at mac.
Best speaker, lectures are hard to keep up with, but organized tightly, best dressed, a bit cockey, hard marker...only class I attended without fail..nuff said.
My favourite proff from first year. Well him, and one other who I can't remember. Anyway, Dr. Horn had the most entertaining and most comprehensive lectures all year, and I loved how comfortable he was. Although a hard marker, you either learn, or fail.
Speaks way too fast, yet is very passionate about history. A great Prof.
So enjoyable. An amazing lecturer and a fair marker -- you just gotta know your stuff and work hard. Absolutely one of the BEST!!
Marking is a bit on the tough side. His side stories and discussion are not to be missed. His concentration on tactics and strategy are a refreshing change from the standard direction of such courses. His skills as an orator keep one transfixed!Just great
110% MAN
Talks too fast. Uses huge words, otherwise, he works well with the material he has to teach.
Goes through the material a bit too fast. Not a bad teacher though.
By far the best prof I've had at Mac. Amazing lecturer, kept me 100% interested in every lecture and I didn't find the speed a problem. Horn is the reason to take History at Mac!
By far my favourite professor - engaging lectures that are well organized and very well delivered. The level of difficulty is balanced out by his amazingness.
I take 5 pages of notes for every Horn lecture. He covers SO MUCH MATERIAL I found the readings to be pointless, my notes covered more. He DOES speak quickly, but after a few minutes you adapt.
Amazing Prof. A little intimadating, but is very passionate and knows so much about history its almost scary.
swashbuckling ****
An amazing proff, seems to be someone who does not belong in this century. Seems he would fit better as a swashbuckling privateer, raiding the enemies of the English Empire.
I would not be at all surprised if Dr. Horn where in fact some sort of immortal being and was both present and partially responsible for every watershed event in history.

Dr. Horn is by far the most organized, knowledgable, and interesting professor I've ever had. I agree with the swashbuckling person - and he is a very intense guy. I will take history classes next year as long as he teaches them!
If you like this guy's lectures you're a huge nerd who loves writing notes for an hour straight. He is probably the most knowledgeable prof in the school, but marks far too hard and is super boring. I will no longer take history b/c of him.
Speaks way too fast. Gives too much to read. Other than that... I guess he's not that bad. Hard though.
Now this is uni.My commerce classes are so boring &this class is AMAZING.I love the way he knows so much.He makes quick connections & explains history with such a passion that it is the only class that I dont fall asleep in.I wish all classes were like th
One of the best lecturers I've had thus far. He speaks with such a passion, it's hard to see where the work ends and the man begins. His lecturing is captivating.
By far one of the best Profs that i have ever had. He is clear and intelligent and knows what he is teaching. His ability to hold ones interest is staggering and thus i would say that whatever class he is teaching is well worth the time to be in.
Horn is one of the best professors ever. Solid guy, really knowledgable about every single aspect of European History and his lectures are really compelling.

Dr. Horn is one of the most compelling lecturers that I have heard. I look forward to going to his class because of the way he lectures. Unlike many of my other classes you never once look at the clock...you don't have time.
WOW...how can one person contain so much knowledge?! Its amazing what he knows. Makes lectures interesting but your hand starts to hurt from taking so many damn notes! Up side: very easy on the eyes ;)
let's not lie, he's just freaking HOT! great teacher too, amazing knowledge of history : )
Dr. Horn is an amazing lecturer. He knows his stuff so well and i always have at least 4 pages of notes! Horn rules!
Great prof. Dense lectures, worthwhile class. Carries himself well. Knows stuff.
Amazing lectures, presents information well, speaks well and without knows. He's also very approachable, and helpful.
Great Prof, one of the best in the history department! Very helpful to his students, sometimes seems intimidating by others but once you talk to him, you don't want to stop!!!! And...well, he's just plain gorgeous!!!!
Best lecturer in the university but also the hardest. The first day of class hearing the comment "a C is a good mark in my class" made me soil myself
Amazing lectures. His style & content are unmatched in the History Department at Mcmaster. He makes class very interesting, so I look forward to going. It also helps that he is quite handsome, too.
Horn is hot! whew, no one can deny that. He's also one of the most intelligent beings i've come across EVER. i didn't know one mind could hold so much knowledge. Amazing.
Anyone who says dr.horn is a bad prof obviously a)doesnt like history or b)doesnt go to class. Albeit he gives people a lot of bad marks, but in many cases, they deserve it. He believes strongly in writing and i think this will help many people later on. Incredible lectures and very helpful!
Hot but hard. Oh and for the record, I DID like history before 2S03 and I did attend every lecture. Don't put down people just because they don't share your views. Dr. Horn is a very demanding prof and I have no clue why so many people place him on a pedestal. He's a fast and average lecturer.
HORN IS THE FREAKING MAN. If you like his style check out Leeson and Swett. They are all amazing profs.
A good class and a good lecture. I too never missed a class.
a pompous boob. if he's handsome, mike harris is a socialist.
thank god someone else sees reality. a very smug, self-satisfied instructor.
Never appreciated him until now. He has deadlines for his undergrads AND his grad student TAs to mark assignments. We could always expect our assignments back in two weeks. Grad students weren't given preferential treatment just because they were grad students that had a lot of work to do.
The man is brilliant. His style is perfect. He knows everything. Generally, the people who don't like him are simply complaining because of their marks. He's one of the reasons I love my programme as much as I do :)
His lectures do not correlate with the readings very well. His explanations can be vague. He's not very approachable. I don't know if he is a ard marker because I had a TA. Overall, i didn't think he cared too much about his first year lectures.
Horn was one of the best history teachers i had! He was clear and had interesting lectures. I absolutly loved the sweaters he wore! He was like Bill Cosby. A very cool dude.
Best history prof ever. Super nice. Great lecturer. I never skip a class. He's always easy to talk to and more than willing to help. He loaned me a bunch of articles and recommended a bunch of books for a paper I had to write for his class. You really have to deserve your A's from him.
I hated his class. He is extremely arrogant and does not care at all about first years.
Horn is hands down the best hitory prof I've ever had. I take classes I don't even care about, just because he's teaching them. He knows everything! Greatest prof ever.
Horn is the greatest gift known to man since Prometheus stole the flames from the gods of Mount Olympus for pathetic mortals. Perhaps, Martin Horn IS a god, gracing us with his divine presence. I do not know, yet I know this, his methos is legendary, the blitzkrieg of of intellectual force that will dawn upon you will likely cause intense histeria.
why do you think we call him Dr. Horney? He is the love of my life, he's really funny and he actually makes me interested in history. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!
Easily the most interesting history course i have taken at mac and it was all because of him. He is so knowledgable but at the same time knows how to have fun with jokes, off topic conversations when need to. he is a phenomenal lecturer and i wish i could have taken more of his courses.
Any class with Dr.Horn will screw you over. He's a great lecturer, but he is not helpful and he has the worst TAs ever! Beware!
The most interesting prof, but exams are hard, and essays are ripped apart. He does seem to have this WAY about him...that can keep you listing with undivided attention for 50 minutes...He is serious, but knows when to throw in a joke or two...You can't NOT take a Horn class or three...
If you want a professor who is going to challenge you, then take a course with Prof. Horn. I was never bored during his lectures.
The man is jovial, and energetic. Unfortunately, that energy tends to result in him going off on tangents or spending 15 minutes on a concept that could be dealt with in 5. Everyone complaining about him being a hard marker should know that a) his TAs mark the majority of the papers, and b) a competent argument/grammar will yield an easy A-.
Exceptionally organized lectures (50 min on the dot) and never boring. He seems intimidating but 1 on 1 he's very nice and helpful. His TAs are ruthless, however.
interesting, prof, great speaker, doens't use power point.
He knows what he's talking about and it comes through in his lectures. He's entertaining and funny but still manages to end at just the right time, leaving you with a feeling of knowing and understanding everything he has talked about.
He totally knows what he's talking about.
AWESOME Lecturer! Easy to follow along. Keeps class interesting. Never once did i look at the time to see when class was over!
very good and very interesting
Friendly, organized, helpful, intelligent. Knows what hes talking about and lectures are extremely clear. Marks were too much determined by TAs, which is frustrating because they are often hard markers. Wish he would have told us a little more about the exam prior to writing it. But he is so friendly, helpful and clear -would love to have him again
Great lecturer! A bit intimidating to talk to face to face, but great class overall!
extremely intelligent, easy to follow, detail oriented and hot :)
I wish I got my degree in history, or a at least a minor
Very good lecturer. Tough marker, but pretty fair
Amazing prof!! He inspired me to major in history! Great lecturer and very passionate.
Best professor I've ever had! Fascinating, highly intelligent, and very good looking :)
Dr. Horn is one of the best professors at McMaster. Attendance is mandatory if you want to do remotely well but by the end of the course you will walk away with a so much amazing knowledge about the topic.
I absolutely love Dr. Horn! Very passionate lecturer, knowledgeable, and inspiring. I looked forward to his class every week! Attendance was mandatory if you wanted to do well, but it was well worth it! Amazing prof, simply amazing. He makes McMaster proud!
Dr Horn is a great lecturer, and a very talented orator. He is very passionate about what he teaches, and imparts his knowledge and his perspective in his field while in lecture. He doesn't use avenue to learn, so lectures are mandatory. Great course, high marks in this course are hard to attain due to his standards. Still learned a lot
Excellent lecturer, old-school style and doesn't try getting students involved (will answer questions, but leaves discussions for tutorial.) Take thorough notes, attend class, and you'll succeed. Not an easy marks class, but marks are fair and supported. Very approachable during office hours.
Dr. Horn is extremely knowledgeable in history and is a good teacher, but this has made him very arrogant. He regularly insults the class without appearing to notice it. His lectures are good, but they are very fast paced so it is best to use a laptop to take notes in his class. He is also a hard marker and his handwriting is incomprehensible.
Fantastic lecturer who made War in the West one of the most interesting, informative courses I have taken. Each class was like he was telling a story. Very charismatic.
Good storyteller, but you can't expect less from a prof who teaches the same thing every year. Does minimal work as a lecturer. Very unapproachable outside of class and doesn't provide lecture notes. Automatically gives out zeroes without reading 12 page essays by referring to ambiguous citation rules that he does not care to elaborate on.
Dr. Horn has great lectures, which he is definitely known for. He's so knowledgeable and that definitely shows in class. He's a very tough grader. My issue with Dr. Horn was that he was very unapproachable. I am a student with a disability and he seemed very annoyed to accommodate and was doing so bc Mac forces profs to. I didn't feel respected.
Horn was my boy. Talked about swamp donkeys. Marty was the man.
Amazing lecturer!
This is the guy you think of when you first thought of a university professor; arrogant, loud mouthed, cuts you off constantly, and has impossibly high essay standards. But man was he great.
Professor Horn is a very good professor. I found his lectures really enjoyable, which is good because if you want to pass the class you really should attend. However, they are really well structured and include the right balance of important/interesting info. Overall really good class if you attend lectures.
Dr. Horn is the most incredible lecturer I've ever experienced. However, this class is one of the nine circles of hell. While the lectures are captivating and near-perfect, the grading on the (2) essays is cut-throat and each is worth 30%. I was in the A-range on the first one, and soon dropped to a C after the second. A perfectionist's nightmare.
Dr. Horn makes attending lectures exciting. I took his world war 2: global history class in fall 2019 and it was by far the best class I've ever taken at McMaster. He wielded the narrative of the history beautifully and in a very exciting/engaging way. The essays were tough, but fun to write and worth the effort put in. Lectures are a must-go !
Dr. Horn is an intelligent professor and presents excellent lectures. However, he doesn't provide the best guidance when it comes to assignments. I'm a student with a disability and I can tell you after classes he is very unapproachable.
Though lectures were interesting and information packed, this professor is unapproachable. As a disabled student, it was apparent that he did not want to accommodate my needs. He provided only what SAS forced him to and required me to predict my health in order to request extensions ahead of time.
Super cool guy, very charismatic, and makes his lectures interesting and thought-provoking. He is a tough grader, but mostly in the sense that he will challenge you to make your work better. If you want an easy 12 go someplace else, but if you want to learn how to write in history, he's your guy.
I have Dr. Horn for HIST4TT3. This professor's marking is definitely over the top with respect to how punitive it is. It's also not the case where a professor chooses to be tougher to make you a better student, he's just being vindictive. I cannot recommend this prof under any circumstance. He does not create a good classroom atmosphere!
I'm in his 4th year seminar class, and wow, everything I heard about him is spot on. Decent lecturer, but not much clarity and substance in his points. VERY opinionated. For your own good, don't disagree ever with him! His marking is brutal for an undergrad course and offers very little clarity as to how he came to that conclusion. GPA SINKER, RUN!
4TT3 Interwar Course. Definitely do not consider taking this professor. He takes pride in making you miserable. He also seems to be an outlier in the department in too that discourages you from taking another history class. You are going to be better suited in any other history course by another professor.
His class is pretty abysmal in terms of marking, with little feedback on the "why" his marking is tough. He seems to forget that this is an undergrad course, regardless if it's a 4th year one. I strongly recommend another prof and course if you care about your GPA at all. You can learn more in another class. He is very vain guy it appears...
Yeah, you should just runaway from this professor at all costs. There definitely appears to be some subtle favouritism in terms of how he responds to some students over others. It's very subconscious, but you can see it. Also, his marking is ruthless. It does not make you a better student or writer. He is overly critical for no legit reason.
I'm about 99% sure this professor is a man that can be summed up as nothing more than mere pretentious mediocrity. It's overly apparent than he is a professor who is more concerned over the aesthetics of his abilities than the substance. If you want a quality history course from actual heavyweights, go for Dr. Weaver, McKay, or Heathorn.
In Dr. Horn's class, you are gambling with your GPA because he determines grades not based on an objective criteria, but a subjective one. It is based on how he feels about you personally. For a participation grade, showing up to every class and participating up to 10x a class is still not enough for a B+! Pass up on his course for your own sake!
4TT3 course: This prof is very historiography oriented, without much room for wielding your own narrative of history. Also, he's a tough grader. And you aren't able to get a grade appeal because your paper gets sent to the Dean (Swett), whom he plays curling with so you're outta luck. The class topics are cool though!
Kind of a bubbled administrator rather than professor. Boring lectures without much forethought.
Students who missed 2-3 classes somehow had higher participation grades than those showing up weekly and participating. If you're not caucasian, it's best to pass up on his classes, not even kidding.
i decided to try out a european history course, and oh my god, he's so prickly!!! 3/10, would not recommend!! this is going to be a rough semester ;(
I speed to class hoping to crash before I get there... A very annoying and uneasy person to converse with, do not recommend this course or him
Do not listen to these 1 star ratings. In my experience Dr. Horn is a somewhat difficult, but he is a good guy with good intentions. He does NOT sugar coat his critiques though. Take it as you will. I highly recommend him!!
Dr. Horn's class is a gamble with your GPA - his grading seems subjective and overly harsh. Definitely consider other history courses instead. I found unstuck ai helpful for studying, though attendance is mandatory.
awkward and obnoxious. i wanted to like his class a lot but he just doesn't give much to like. his marking is not helpful and he isn't helpful if you reach out. kind of a bummer ;(
Not many things you are graded on which is something I didn't like. I find he's not really bringing much in the classroom and outside of it, almost like he's indifferent to his students. I would probably compare him to Streeter who's a bit worse.
Very, very difficult to deal with in general in terms of coursework and how he is. All hat no cattle, next
