I have no clue about chemistry, but for some reason I understood it with him
Great teacher! I was afraid to take Chemistry, but he makes complex ideas easy to understand. He has a great sense of humor! He tries to make Chemistry fun...if that's possible!
Heres the best thing abut martin-he will spend HOURS explaining topics at office hours- i had a standing appointment with him and tried hard and got an A, and i am not a science person.Take advantage of this and you will get an A too.
Good teacher, explained everything about 20 times when we didn't understand. This meant that we only got through about half the chapters we were supposed to but that only made the class easier!

HE always makes time for his students, but he is hard to get a gold of. He is hard to understand and I relized I was teaching myself with the help of the book. He makes the test very hard and the questions on the test are confussing. He makes you think!
Hard class. study study and study more. do the reactions over and over again. write down all reaction examples and study them they are similar to test "?". This teacher is great he is sooo helpful just a very hard subject. He expects you to
he is very nice guy, but his test is so difficult, and he will try to trick you. and real test is much difficult than sample test, even he said it will be not. Ask him question anytime and anything even during test, he might give you a hint.
Horribly disorganized. If your grade is borderline and it comes down to the numbers, too bad. He doesn't calculate everything, and infact loses things to give you an average.
Very nice guy, however he is disorganized and his tests are sooo hard. He told me that if i did the extra credit and did well on the final i would get a be. I did both and yet still got a C
Martin is awesome. O-chem is a tough subject, but he wants you to succeed! He will help out as much as possible and review before all tests. He's a good teacher...I somehow got an A in the class...You can too!
He's a great guy. Very helpful if you do not understand. He's just very unorganized. Take good notes and do the homework. During tests, ask ?'s and he'll practically give you the answer. Study guides are helpfull.
Awful teacher, unrealistic. Do not take this chem class unless you are super at chemistry.
Martin is a great guy. He is extremely enthusiastic about chemistry and tries his best to get the class excited too. There were a lot of complainers who dropped this class. Chemistry is hard, it's not Martin. He's helpful and let's you know exactly what to study for the tests. Be ready to study a lot outside of class and you can get an A.
the teacher wasnt bad but the subject is!!
Martin is the teacher to take this class with he tries to give you every opportunity. This class is extremely difficult but with lots, i mean lots of studing and a good study group you can make an A. Do not load yourself the semester you take this class! You will need full attention here. Notes, flashcards, re-listenhing to taped lectures, the works
This is the worst chemistry class i have ever taken. He is not well prepared&it was his first time teaching the class. There was lots of things he couldnt explain. He takes for ever to turn back ur work and his exams is very long&difficult and does not match his notes or even the homework and asks lots of questions from lab that he didnt turn them bac
So far, I'm unimpressed. He treats us as if we know absolutely nothing about the simple things (i.e. defining "science") yet lets the more difficult things go by with no definition or explanation. You give respect, you'll get respect. I had been looking forward to this class, but this guy...
Disorganized, doesn't return graded papers, looses papers and reports then estimates grades
Great teacher, he works hard to get the class interested. This is simply a difficult subject. You can get an A, but you need to work really hard. He will help you at any time and will even come in on his day off if you miss a test or lab.
He is either going too fast or slow. If he finishes material to be on exams he jumps ahead and lectures on material for the following exam. If he is behind he just makes you learn the material on your own and doesn't apologize for not knowing how to manage his time. Very tale to hand back assignments; overall a disappointment.
I don't know why everyone is being so harsh i think he is a great teacher and it is such a fun class because of the stupidest things he says and he teaches it well so far i get the class its pretty easy
Martin's a great teacher. If you do all your homework then you'll get it. His tests are just like the practices he gives out, so you get to prepare well. He also spend a lot of extra time in the chemistry room to help other students.
He is a very good chemistry teacher. The material is challenging, however Mr. Larter tries his best to explain the concepts. You must read the chemistry book if you want to get an A in his class. However it's still possible to pass by just studying his lectures and doing his practice exams.
Larter is a really nice guy, and he works hard to teach you the material, but his tests are extremly difficult. I have a 4.0 GPA and still had some diffuculty. Three of my friends took this class with other professors and they all got "pretty easy A's". His practice tests and example problems are much easier then his actual test.

WOW... where do I start? highly disorganized. Already a difficult course without him being misleading. Gives out practice tests which are NOTHING like his real test, they are 10X harder, like nothing you have done in class. I will give him this though, he is VERY HELPFUL!... any and all questions, he will answer.
Whatever the people on the bottom are people who onviously just lazy and want an easy "A." Larter is a wonderful teacher had him for chem 115 and 116. Very helpful man who wants to us to succeed. Always in the help room willing to help, maybe the people in the previous comments didn't realize that. Larter is always there for his student! Brilliant!
I was sad when turning my final because I knew his teaching was coming to an end. Larter is such a caring teacher & wants all his students to succeed. Always in the helproom devoting his time and knowledge to his students. Any person would be lucky to have him as a teacher. Thank you Professor Larter, take care!!!!!!!
He is a good teacher but you will have a hard time understanding the words that he is saying, the test is extremely hard and it is totally different than his lecture. If u take him good luck then!!!!!!!!!!!
Martin is a great teacher and extremely helpful! He really wants his students to succeed. I don't like chemistry very much but he makes the class fun and interesting with his corny jokes! Reading the book was very helpful and so were his reviews. If you are struggling than his office hours are VERY helpful! Great teacher and I would reccomend him!
Go to class. If you didn't pass on the 1st attempt and think you can pass w/o going to lecture the next time, you'll have trouble. His office hours are very very helpful. You don't really need the book in the beginning of the semester, but towards the end, you will. I took this class both at SDSU and Grossmont. Larter is one of the best teachers ev
exam Q's are SO much harder than any Q's you practice. be prepared to do end of ch. Q's as well as online hmwk. gives out many worksheets to practice work. Reading text is not enough. u must practice. his website is full of practice material. helps in tutoring center for an hour so go ask Q's then. very fair person. Will compromise hmwk due dates.
Tough subject no matter who you take, so I recommend him. He is EXTREMELY helpful. His tests are hard but if you do mastering chemistry problems BEFORE the test, you will get good grades. He's goofy but a great teacher and willing to take the time to help. I wish all teachers were as helpful.
Great guy & WILL help you if you ask. Do the Tutorials even if you don't take the 115T for credit. Know that you will need to put in the time... but you will come out of it UNDERSTANDING Chem even if you knew nothing before. Isn't that the point of learning it. Yes tests and quiz are harder than lecture but the final is m/c and a LOT Easier! :)
Chem is just a hard subject but Martin is always willing to help so be sure to utilize his office hours and don't be afraid to ask questions! His tests are HARD so just make sure you do well on the hw and lab reports. He's also a big guy who sweats a lot so sometimes he doesn?t smell all that great but don?t hold it against him. I ended up with a B
A little (ok a lot) on the goofy side, but really nice guy. Always willing to go out of his way to answer questions and accommodate students, which I'm pretty sure he sees as his calling in life. Definitely not an easy A, but you'll learn your stuff.
It is a difficult class but a good grade is achievable. He loves chemistry, you can tell, and he is always there to help you through any problem you are having. I would definitely recommend him for Organic Chem. One of the best professors I have had. His grading is really fair as well.
Super hard class! I got an B but i worked my butt off studying all night long with study groups. I dont think I could of gotten a better grade. He is so helpful though, and super hilarious. Super goofy guy that will keep you awake in the class because you will be laughing at him rather than with him. Material is frustrating, so ask questions!!!!!!!
He is weird. He stinks too, literally. I had to drop because he never explains well in class, you will always have to find him again for help. Which, is only the up side, he is always available for help. Never, and I say NEVER replies to any student's emails. Grades inconsistent.
WOW !! Chem 141 is super hard...Larter is a little scatterbrained, and kind of a mess, but he is a great teacher. He cares a lot about his students, and he is always easy to find in the science building. I busted my butt and ended up with a B, and I spent massive time studying. This class will let you know if you are ready for big leagues
This professor is the very best professor. He is accommadating, helpful, and humorous. He makes a difficult, frustrating class seem very fun. He even accomadates you with your most difficult challenges. Take him over any other professor. He is the very best teacher, who I have ever had. He has websites, office hours and cares about his students.
I guess since chemistry is his only best friend other than his dog. he wants you to know chemistry just as much as he does! this guy is a little crazy in a not so good way. He sweats during lectures, he wants you to know everything in depth and has pretty hardtest.Thefirsttestalmost half the class dropped and the rest gave him a hard time after
today was our first test. Half the class didn't show up because they knew that this guy was no joke. He is a nerd that wants you to be a nerd too. 20 minutes into the test a student handed larter his test and said "it was nice knowing you." we never saw him again. Formal labs for EVERY lab + BB ?'s. Can't use TI calc for test.
honestly, the man reminds me of mr. dink. very nice guy. thorough & always willing to help. sometimes confusing, but pretty clear & specific w/ what he wants you to know. occasionally cracks jokes. rare text use except for hw which can only help you so much. be specific w answers & fight for each point you feel you deserve. STUDY+OFFICE HOURS!
taking this class at national U was a horrible mistake (don't fast track).. Martin is super funny. Really helpful.. Chemistry is hard. HARD. He really tries to help you remember, even it put his reputation on the line. He is a good guy.. Nerd, but who isn't really.. Bro shout out from your sandwich deliver
Mr. Larter is AWESOME! Super nice guy who really wants you to pass the class. The class is hard, but thats because its chemistry! Helps out whenever possible. He does go over lecture topics because there is soo much to learn. But always has office hours and veryy helpful. I hope he is teaching 116.
He is a good professor overall.. I had Martin for summer chem (which was super hard). And he was funny and cool to be in class with. Martin is a nerd, but i recommend him for your stuggle through Chem 100
I took my first college chem class with Larter last semester. He is a little unorganized and unclear at times but he is passionate about his subject. He is very helpful so don't be shy with questions and class and he spends his entire office hours w/ student. I got a B
Org/bio chem is a very good class to take BEFORE taking pharmacology & physiology. Instructor makes basic principles of the material clear. He has plenty of optional worksheets that help understanding alot. He is personable & humorous. He earns an A+ for helpfulness & patience. This class is alot of work but well worth the effort.
This teacher is great, he knows his stuff about chemistry, he makes good jokes, on exams he curves it, but not to a certain amount of points to help you, i thought his class was great
Mighty Martin (as he called himself) was a funny teacher that really wanted you to pass the class. Although he is kind of unorganized he is good at explaining and helps you a lot in labs. Probably easiest teacher for chem.
Martin is awesome! I took his class for 115 and 116 and he is so helpful and patient with his students. He is really funny too! For me his teaching style is easy to understand and he will give up his time to help us with any questions. Appreciate this guy because there is no other like him!!
Martin is nice (albeit crazy), and he's always available for help after class, but if you're a busy person like myself, that doesn't really matter. He doesn't explain certain things at all, yet he'll spend an hour explaining something simple. Also, the multiple choice sections on his tests are killer! Each question is worth 2 points!!!
Martin is a nice guy who genuinely wants his students to succeed. He takes a little getting used to, but he is very helpful & always available for ofc hours. If you study and use the online resources he has available on his website there is no reason not to get an A. I am definitely taking him for 141. Nerds rule.
Ok you have to get over the fact that this guy is weird. If you do that then he is a great teacher!! He has his quirks but he keeps the interest level up! One of the best teachers I've ever had. He teaches chemistry which is hard all around but he is so passionate about this subject! I definitely recommend having him as a teacher!!
Martin is a nice teacher with a strange/funny personality. His class does require quite a bit of homework and studying but it shouldn't be too hard to get an A in this class. He is kind of a stickler when it comes to grading but he curves his exams so its all good.
This is the first time I have ever had chem and it def worth taking him, because he grades on curve for the test, he will also even help you during the test to understand a question. Beware, he uses a lot of analogies and I'm not used it. Last, be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class. Work hard and you will get an A, which I did.
Love his sense of humor! Rearranged my schedule so I can have him in the fall for Chem 141. Always keeps me on my toes with his humor and love for Chemistry (and his dogs)! Make sure to keep up with the homework and labs. He puts so much information and practice worksheets online, which is really helpful.
General Chemistry is a relatively difficult class no matter who you take it with. It sometimes requires an overwhelming amount of time but if you do give it the time, you will do well. Martin is a pretty funny guy with obvious interest in Chemistry (mostly theoretical chemistry). He grades hard at first but lightens up afterwards and ALWAYS helps..
Really flamboyant personality. Always cracking stupid jokes (not all entirely appropriate). Terrible handwriting. Lecture is not well structured and he always goes off on tangents. Hard to follow. Makes awkwardly long eye contact and lectures directly at people in first couple rows. Sometimes drools when he talks. Expect 30+ hours/week homework.
The below is absolutely correct -- He makes awkwardly long eye contact, forces you to answer his rhetorical questions, definitely spits a little bit when he really gets into what he's saying. However, he's the best chemistry teacher I've had at Grossmont (and I've tried a few of em.) He will make things absolutely clear that others gloss over.
Marter genuinely loves chem and wants his students to excel. Very willing to help and provides ample office hours. His ochem website had a lot of helpful links and problem sets including old exams. Class is curved. Be prepared to STUDY for this class, it's not easy. Exams are straightforward. If you need help with concepts, hw, or lab, ask him!
Not a good teacher
If you want to learn Chemistry then take Martin or the other GC profs, if you want an easy grade only to fail when you transfer, go somewhere else. Martin is a man of the students, and helps out any student, even those not in his class. The man does his damnedest for his students so show him some respect and at least skim the material before lab.
GREAT GUY... Easier than most the other Chem teachers, but chem is just hard at Grossmont. You really got to be on top of your stuff to get an A, but is not impossible and he teaches everything. READ THE BOOK BEFORE LECTURE. Study the quizzes and tests on his site and master the conceptsmaterials. Good luck it is possible to get an A, I did...
He's not a bad professor, but it is REALLY hard to understand him. He's not clear when he's speaking and does not explain properly in lecture. some of the stuff in his tests he hasn't even explained or it's not in the book. Good luck
Larter is a great person and teacher. He goes beyond what he should do for you to understand these topics. The things he does, like stand on the tables and jumping off made everybody laugh just to teach you Pot. Energy. He is open to questions. All the chem students came to him for help, even those with different teachers.
He's easy professor. But, his lectures are so long, bad organized, and so confusing; quizzes and tests are hard to get high score.
Professor Larter has a unique method of teaching but he is 100% there for the students. A very high energy professor and goes above and beyond in his profession. If you put in the necessary work you will be successful in this class because this class is FAR from a walk in the park. One of the top professors I've experienced in my life.
So lets be Honest here. Chemistry is a really Tough subject. Martin Larter is an amazing professor. He breaks down the hardest concepts so you can understand, but as i said in the beginning, Chemistry is a tough subject so take advantage of his office hours where he will go the extra mile just to help you.
Martin Larter is an amazing teacher and an overall great guy. He makes class a lot more enjoyable and he appreciates students who work hard. If you're struggling in his class, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! I cannot stress this enough. He genuinely wants students to pass and is completely willing to sacrifice his time to help. He's one of the best here!
Instructed part of my class. Engages students. Really wants you understand. Office hours highly recommended, he will help you! Grades fair. Unusual sense of humor, but loves teaching and it shows. Wish I had taken him for the whole semester.
Chemistry comes naturally to me, so the class was relatively easy. He's a good teacher, lectures well enough that textbook use is optional at most. Tests are like quizzes which are like the problems in lecture. If you feel you aren't good at chemistry, he's probably your best choice.
The course material is naturally challenging so you must put in the time. However, the professor is very accessible and he is glad to help if you have any doubts.
He is an amazing teacher. He gives great feedback when you ask him questions. Would definitely recommend okayyyy
He's a good guy and I can tell he wants his class to pass. You really need to put in the work so you can pass but overal quizzes every lab and he sends you review every single time and they match the quiz. And he has practice exams and finals for every test you take. Hard to fail his class if you don't spend the hours learning his material
I would take this class again. I really learned a lot and have a solid understanding of the material. The professor is accessible during office hours for those who want to take advantage of this.
Loveeeeeeeee Professor Larter! he is the best Chemistry Professor ever!! He made me love chemistry. I took him for Chem 142 and got an A. Although the class was very intense and needed a lot of work and maybe the hardest class I have ever taken, I really enjoyed it.
He is a very smart and fair guy. He is very passionate about teaching and really cares about your success. He uses different mnemonics to help you memorize difficult staff, and etc. During his class I've learned more than in any other math classes. Now conversions are just piece of cake for me. Thank you Martin!
Martin is absolutely great! The material itself requires a bit of effort to understand but Martin makes it easy to learn. The tests are fair, he gives you a review every time so definitely study! There are quizzes every lab except on test days. He's pretty dorky and funny. Take advantage of office hours and ask questions! Definitely recommend.
This is great teacher. He is someone you want to take for chemistry. His lectures makes sense and he's weird but hilarious and understanding of the student needs. Take him you won't regret it.
the most horrible and confusing professor out there. good luck passing his class. very rude and careless professor. i got terrible anxiety because of him... I strongly do not recommend him.
Martin Larter is amazing professor, it's true he is hard but he explains really good. If u didn't understand something, toutering center is available to help with the best people. He explains good and care about making his students understand. Questions are not easy, you need to study and understand the concepts very well to have good grade.
Chemistry is tough, and this is college chemistry. Don't be a baby. His teaching style is super comprehensive. He genuinely cares about his students and their grades. Please don't blame your failure on professors. It's just you expecting an A without putting enough efforts
(10% Quiz)(40% Exams)(10% HW)(25% Lab)(15% Final) Pros: Gives you hints during exams if you ask. Gives insider information if you visit him during office hours. He's the best you're gonna get at Grossmont Cons: Quizzes every week except for exam week. Lectures are very boring. Study guides do not match exams, USE THE WORKSHEETS Tricky questions
Chemistry is a difficult subject but if you put in the time and effort, you will probably pass. Mr. Larter is accessible outside of class and is happy to help with any chemistry problems you may have. He is a nice teacher but just make sure to study and go to tutoring!
Larter is definitely not the worst professor, but certainly not the best. His lectures make sense, the quizzes are kind of challenging, and the tests do not match the study guides making them rather difficult to study for. Make sure you're caught up on reading because his lectures will clarify the reading. And always stay on top of your HW.
Larter is a nice guy, but as far as teaching goes there's a lot he could improve. Study guides don't match the test, and is a very tough grader. Luckily he inputs a curve, but most of the time, the tests won't make much sense compared to what you were studying. Quick returns on tests though. If you take him be prepared to study. A LOT.
Larter is really tough. if you taking organic chemistry you need to prepare yourself to put 24 hour studying and quit your job. he gives us a lot of homework, quizzes , and what i hate the most is his labs reports. TBH he is the hardest professor i have ever been with. if you planning on getting a good grade you probably will fail. don't take him
Larter is a hard professor but he grades fairly even compared to other professors. He did teach pretty but I would recommend reading the textbook, because it really helped for studying the exams. Lab reports were hard but he does go over the directions.
He's a really nice guy BUT makes the class harder than it needs to be. A ton of homework and it's barely worth anything toward the grade. Teaches more topics than other professors. I came from a university with a BS and this class is still hard and a lot of work. GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
He is the tough grader I have ever seen. His lecture doesn't make sense. worst professor I have ever seen. Not recommended at all.
Professor Martin does not know how to teach. He confuses students. The tests are very hard. and he grades very hard. does not worth taking his class. you will fail for no reason.
If you don't want to fail to avoid him. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Took his fundamental chem in 2005 and didn't have good experience. don't take him
Nothing he teaches you are in the test and he is all over the place.
Professor Larter was definitely a funny individual. He always cracked jokes which made the class tolerable. But his teaching style is all over the place and seemed to be unorganized. Prepare to study on your own a lot. He posts lectures onto canvas and the textbook was mandatory.
THIS IS THE BEST CHEM TEACHER! His lectures are great, he's very weird, helping you pay attention and remember info, he also applies concepts to things easier to understand. He's always available when you need help, office hours, email, you name it. For every homework assignment, there are 2 extra credit assignments.
Took Chem 120 and 141 with Professor Larter. He is easy, lenient, and patient with his students. The class sometimes gets hard and I felt lost but he is helpful. Come to see him during office hours!! Lab reports are kinda heavy, just follow lab rubrics. He does care your success in Chemistry. Practice more with previous quizzes and exams. Good luck
Professor Larter was interesting. Lectures were boring but to be honest he did give us all the info we need. But definitely be ready to study on your own as his lectures won't be enough. Also office hours helped out a lot. Id say avoid if you can but if not then don't worry he really is a good guy, just hard to follow along with at times
Professor Larters course was very heavy in testing (40% of grade); he is a very tough grader and his quizzes are just as hard as exams. His lectures are long, but you do learn a bit from them. Be ready to teach yourself and get ready for tons of assignments; I recommend prioritizing this course over any other courses youre taking.
Professor Martin is a real great guy. He is an organic Chemist so he knows what he is talking about however you definitely need to ask him to dumb it down for you sometimes otherwise you'll be lost. It is a difficult class so be ready to read the textbook and take notes. There is a lot of homework as well. Quizzes every lab except for exam week.
Prof Larter is a decent professor, I truly loved his class and it was not to bad. I got an amazing grade because I tried very hard, I went to his office hours and participated as much as I could. This is a chemistry course, you can not epect to do amazing without actually trying. I recommend this professor, and I will take O Chem with him!
prof. larter is a pretty cool, silly guy. i found his lectures very clear and to the point. labs were great, as he would walk us through and help if needed. quizzes and exams are a bit difficult, but i think it's better that way for premeds like myself who are preparing for the mcat. he would send out study materials as well before exams.
Great professor! It's not easy, but this is a chemistry course. As long as you go to class and do the homework, you'll do fine. Also if you complete the extra credit homework, he applies a huge grade boost at the end of the semester. Mine went up almost 6 percent! Wish I could take him for 141, but the class time conflicts with my schedule.
6 WEEKS Summer Course. Definitely not easy. I prioritized & dedicated atleast 35 hrs a week into this accelerated class. Professor Larter is funny & cares about his students & takes time outside of class to explain the material/concepts better. Go to his office hours, do homework/extra credit for grade boost. Ignore the doubts, u will prevail!
Chemistry isn't an easy subject, but Larter was understanding and usually didn't take points off late work as long as you communicate with him when you'll turn it in. Quiz every week, 4 Exams + Final. Lab report due everyweek. It's a heavy class in general, so a forgiving teacher was nice. Go to office hours and dont miss class and you will do ok.
This is not a introductory "highschooler" level this is like university hard level. He said on the first day of class that he is diagnosed with chronic depression and I don't believe a professor should be working with there students if they say this because his mood swings can flip around and may go against your odds of passing.
Not for beginners. Test heavy. A lot of reading and studying. Terrible lectures. His lectures consisted of things you probably won't see on the exam and him complaining. Most of the class dropped out. I would give him a 10 on difficulty.
I was nervous when I first started the course, I was not good at chemistry before, but Professor Larter made the subject enjoyable and easy to understand. He uploads a study guide for every exam with every topic covered, and I found that found this was the best way to prepare for the exam and the review Zoom. Be sure you do the EC, it helps a ton.
This was a tough class, with so much material to cover. Difficult quizzes most weeks let you know what will be on the tests. Professor Larter makes the class fun by joking around and keeping the mood light. The final exam was much easier than any of the tests, perfect!
Great at teaching the lectures, but outside of class, required way more than the units would assume. Online, he threw textbooks worth of information at you and then was upset when you didn't know ALL of it. He would say he gave us the information so we should know it, even though the sheer amount of information was incredible.
Prof. Larter was an amazing teacher who taught very well if you wanted to learn. The class was difficult, but chemistry as a whole is hard. I took this course over the Summer and was successful but spent a lot of time on the work every day (as it is chemistry over summer). Very caring, passionate, and overall a great person.
threw a ton of information out every week then acted like we were stupid for asking simple questions and was then mad when we didn't understand. I'm taking this class with a different professor now, and I feel I'm learning way more in a cooperative environment. I'm sure this class would be better for a chemistry major, but the course is intro-level
Overall, very caring of the student's ability to learn. Be prepared for a lot of information but very useful for General Chemistry. Well prepared lectures and provides all learning materials in advance for the whole semester. Very spirited in his lectures and encourages/offers additional help during his office hours.
He is super nice and accept my late work if I am sick or having an emergency and whenever I ask for help he always comes to me but keep in mind chem is hard so you have to study a lot.
Professor Larter is incredibly helpful both in and out of class. It's clear he's passionate about chemistry and teaching students, and he was incredibly flexible with deadlines and providing extra help. My only complaint is that labs were graded very slowly, so it was difficult to see what you were doing wrong. I would 100% take his class again.
You may be alarmed with grades and everything to start, but his class improves and he will grow on you. Just give it some time if you're debating on dropping. If you want to truly succeed in chemistry, take him. If you want to slack and just get through, probably not the best of choices. Great understanding and caring professor overall.
I got an A in Chem 120, so I knew going into it that this class would require hard work to get a good grade. However, Professor Larter is beyond unreasonable. You have to memorize information from organic chemistry (this is a gen chem class). Half the class had to withdraw halfway through the semester, and the highest grade in the class was 75%.
Prof Larter's CHEM120 class is challenging but rewarding. He makes the material engaging and provides helpful resources like study guides. Leveraging Unstuck AI alongside the textbook and office hours really helped me succeed.
Very loud personally that may or may not be appealing, I personally liked him a lot. You definitely need to study for the class and expect a quiz every week. Labs were very well structured and fun. He does not mind giving you help during the quizzes. 4 Exam plus the 1 final.
Professor Larter is one of the nicest teachers I've ever encountered. His lectures are usually very joke-filled and light hearted. With that being said, he is NOT good at lecturing. He often gives an overload of useless information, which gets very hard to distinguish from necessary information and tends to overcomplicate very basic concepts.
Fine but definitely wouldn't be my first pick again. I had more work in this class then my 141 class. He has a pretty intense lecturing style and I often struggled to pay attention. He is helpful and willing to answer questions though, including on quizzes. Be ready to do a LOT of quizzes. His pre-labs are a bit long too. Still a doable class/Prof.
Professor Larter is an ok Chem teacher. His personality is very light hearted and outgoing, however, the Chem 120 is not a “high school” level. As someone who has never taken chemistry in high school this class was very difficult. You have to be there for lectures and labs or else you miss something. Just be prepared for a lot of studying and notes
I feel his rating is high because he is nice. More than half of the class had to drop. I would've dropped if I had known. His lectures aren't very good he doesn't answer questions well. The average for exams is below 60% some manage to get 80%. This class is not easy, many of us study hard but still can't get an A. good luck
this professor was a nice guy but his lecture style is so bad. I had to drop because of how difficult the workload is. He just talks so much for the simple concepts but the complex ones he just speeds through it. I was having to teach myself most of the stuff. chem 120 is supposed to be an prep for chemistry and I was really struggling.
Larter is a good guy, and you can tell he loves what he does, but his lectures are just all over the place. He runs through concepts, there's a quiz every week, and the averages on exams were always between 50-70 with no curve. Be prepared to reteach yourself everything after the class. Also marks points down for the smallest things.
Chem itself is hard, no chem class is an easy class. Prof Larter is a great guy and while I would retake his class simply because of his person, I have to admit his lecturing style takes a while to get used to; he speaks chemistry, uses constant analogies and allegories. Advice: show up to class (grade boost) and STUDY around 10hrs
Larter is a nice teacher and truly does want you to do well in his class! Some lab reports were difficult, but he let us turn them in late for full credit, and he was always willing to help. He also gave us test corrections and practice quizzes with keys. It will be a hard class, but if you consistently put in the effort, you should do just fine.
This professor was great, but it really depends on how you learn. I took this class as a summer course, so everything went by quickly. He tries to teach his class by making things clear for others, but it is a very auditory teaching style that he uses. He is happy to help with what you're struggling with and office hours are definitely recommended.
He's very nice, but has a very particular teaching style where almost everything he says is call-and-response. He also oversimplifies basic concepts to the point where it feels a bit patronizing. Definitely took a while for me to get used to lol. Also be sure you don't skip the lectures/labs--you'll miss crucial info that isn't posted on Canvas.
This was my first semester in college, and I'll say he's a very nice and respectful professor, but his teaching style was tough to understand and keep up with all semester. If you love lectures, this class is perfect for you. Overall, a good professor, but the way of teaching doesn't work for all.
It's challenging to pass the class if you don't attend.
