Does not use textbooks- information based on notes. He is from Mexico, so he has an accent, but it is very easy to understand. He's very funny and makes an effort to help students learn. He is always eager to answer questions and willingly makes study guides and holds review sessions if the students ask for them.
He has an accent, but he's not difficult to understand. He makes class engaging by giving off the aura of being interested in what he teaches. He's also funny, and doesn't even use a textbook! I would recommend this class, anyone should do well as long as you make the effort.
Highly recommend any class with him. He's friendly, and though he has an accent he tries his best to make himself clear and understood.
Easy class as long as you put the effort in to stay on top of the material. No textbook is needed, all information comes from power point presentations from guests.I have a hard time understanding accents, but I had no trouble at all understanding him. Really enjoyed the class.
Very humorous, and a great instructor.
Martin is an awesome professor! He may sometimes be a little difficult to understand but he asks you to help him say words correctly so he can learn. He makes it easy to learn and is always there to help you when you need it! He makes his classes enjoyable and makes you want to learn! I suggest taking any class with Martin!
Fun professor. Very clear teacher. Fun material. Always helpful. What more could you ask for. Also--his class is difficult but not insanely. Do the work and the reading and you'll be fine.
English is definitely not his first language- tests are written with poor grammar so it is sometimes very hard to understand what he is actually asking for. MAJORITY of testquiz questions come from your hw! Though your TAs will not grade them so you have to seek him outside of class for actual help- make sure you have the right answers!
Martin is funny but he can be hard to understand sometimes. Assignments aren't for credit but do them because all the test questions come from them! The TA's don't really do anything to help with grading the assignments. You have to find Martin or email him to get answers or ask questions. He's accessible but it's a pain!
Martin is a little hard to understand sometimes due to his accent. However, he is very knowledgeable and willing to clarify anything. He really encourages his students to engage in the material and learn about different things.
Martin is by far one of the best teachers at WSU. He is one of the few that genuinely cares about the success of his students. His tests are also extremely fair. If you pay attention in class you will get a good grade.
He is really funny and his accent reminds me of my dad so I feel right at home! I am still not sure how to say his last name correctly though... everyone says it different.
Great person! Only complaint is that his tests are very subjective.
He's the best teacher ever. He's funny and entertaining, and I understand his accent perfectly.
Martin is a good guy, but all you do in this class are quizzes and tests.
Wonderful professor. Was very helpful. I had been having problems in the class and he worked with my schedule to help me pass. English is not his first language so asking clarification questions would be very useful. Great teacher. Wonderfully fun class.
Martin is the best teacher at WSU! He does his best to make sure you understand and learn the material. If you do the homework, go to the reviews, and ask him questions when needed you will do amazing in the class. If you don't come to class you will not do well end of story. He gives you all the material to do well. Use it! You also have to think!
A great professor!! His accent can be a little hard to understand at times, but eventually you will get used to it. He encourages participation in class, which really helps in understanding the topics. Reproduction is his favorite subject and he is very passionate about it. If you pay attention in lectures and do HW then you should do just fine.
He's super funny and an amazing professor, DO THE HOMEWORK
He is awesome, honestly he makes lectures enjoyable when he gives them. He is pretty funny, he does have a Spanish accent so sometimes his wording is off but you can still understand. I did skip some classes which proved to be somewhat difficult because his power points are specific, so its hard to understand the material if you skip.
Martin is the most amazing professor I have ever had. He makes lecture fun! I will admit that he does write pretty hard tests and quizzes but if you study hard you can get a good grade.
He's honestly just the best professor i've ever had. He is so funny and engaging. The second you walk into class he is instantly telling jokes and showing how much he loves teaching. Office hours with him are amazing too because he really honestly wants to help you succeed.
I've had Martin for Aninam Sci 101 and 285 and he is one of the best professors you will ever have. He goes out of his way to get to know all of his students and help them be as successful as possible! I rearrange my schedule to ensure he will be my prof again! He won't hand you an A but he is fair and gives you every opportunity to succeed.
He is very passionate about the reproductive system which is funny. He's interactive and WILL call on you in class, even if there's over 100 people in the class. He'll give extra credit on tests and quizzes for attending class so definitely show up all the time. There's lots of content on a wide range of topics so be prepared to study a lot.
I had Martin for 101 and loved his class. He has been so busy this semester and acts like AS350 is the world's largest burden for him. I have had almost no positive experiences and will honestly never take a class from him again because of his behavior this semester.
Martin is a great prof. I had him for AS 101 and he was great. However this semester, he made a lot of things unnecessarily more difficult. The only way for the majority of student to pass exams was for him to allow us to use cheat sheets. Luckily he gave a little extra credit on exams. He is hilarious and it helped make the class more enjoyable
Martin is an amazing professor and lecturer, never bored in his class. If you love star wars youll get along even better.
Funny guy, makes lectures interesting. If you work hard, you'll get a good grade.
Martin is one of my favorite teachers! This class is not easy but if you keep up with the reading in the textbook and homework you should be good. You have to study and work a lot outside of class but it is a 300 level class. He has chapter summary papers you can write every chapter and he lets you use them on the exams and a notecard on quizzes.
I really like Martin, I have taken a few classes with him and 285 was my favorite. The only thing I didn't like was for this particular class he was pretty opinionated about certain things that maybe he should have kept his opinion to himself about. Otherwise super fun and interesting class. If you pay attention, study and do homework its an easy A
He's a very funny teacher. You can tell he knows what he's talking about and is very passionate to tell others about it. He is a very friendly guy and very approachable. You don't NEED to attend class but you really should because some things in the tests are only said in the lectures and not in the slides he posts.
Martin is a REAL GEM. Super funny and always willing to explain more on a little more difficult topics. TAs are nice and funny and everyone is really helpful in the class. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Attendance isn't mandatory but is good if you're an extra credit taker or want some bonus points on exams.
Martin is by far the best professor I've had, he has inspired me and has made me believe in my own ability to become a vet. It is a lot of work and you'll have to work for it but its college and you're here to learn.
If you want a hilarious professor and a straightforward class with clear grading criteria, take Martin's classes. He makes the lectures fun and has a ton of passion for the material. Definitely one of the best professors on campus. Also, I'm an ag major who knew most of the stuff already so it can be a super easy A.
Martin is a very funny professor. He wants you to have fun in class, and he tries to lighten the mood in class. If you can go to class on Thursday, try to do that because Thursday is the most popular day for students to skip and he will give extra credit to students that show up. Exam 2 is the hardest exam in the course, so make sure to study hard
I took this class online hoping it would be fine based on reviews, but it has not been that way thus far with everything being remote. Ive only seen a lecture done by him live one time, everything else is in lab with the TA. Its unfortunate that I cant experience an in person lecture with Martin.
Martin is the most fun professor I think I have ever had! I get excited to go to his class because he always cracks jokes and interacts with his students. He is a little slow at responding to emails, but honestly even with some flaws, he is still the best professor I have ever had!
Martin is very fun and enthusiastic. He is definitely there to help anyone who is looking. The class was pretty easy but had a lot of work. Martin is a great teacher and I would definitely recommend!
Martín is one of my best professors yet. Super cool guy with a clear passion for both teaching and his field/clinical work. Took the time to get to know the students, as much as theyre comfortable with, while still taking care of class. Cant wait for future classes with Martín!
He's a great professor, amazing class and had a lot of fun with it
Tests and quizzes were very difficult and unforgiving. This is my second semester with him but was not my choice. I wish dearly I had another choice of a professor because what is in his tests and quizzes do not match whats in the text book or lecture. Also gives you very little time on the quizzes (30 sec per question) which ruined a lo of grades.
He has nearly impossible quizzes which are insanely specific and if the entire class fails a quiz he will not curve it. He does not care about you doing well and he does not give you enough time on quizzes do not take him!!!
We have weekly quizzes in which nearly everyone fails and does give us enough time to understand the material. He goes insanely fast through the material and provides no guidance on what to learn. You practically have to teach yourself I do NOT recommend taking him if you want a good grade.
Martin is an engaging and knowledgable professor. Have taken a few classes with him and plan to take more. Makes me excited to be in the major I am!
Martin is one of the best professors you'll ever meet, he is one of those professors that really truly cares. He WILL call on you, so pay attention. This class was on the easier side for me but I know many students that struggle with it, I think if you stay on top of the class it's a breeze. He is a very fair professor if he sees you pay attention!
This class was my fav class ever at WSU, it is a study abroad in Costa Rica and if you've thought about taking it, stop thinking and do it. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!! Martin is HIlarious and a wonderful professor. Very Cattle heavy but a wonderful experience.
This is a tough class because it has a lot of content but if you're pre-vet you should definitely take this class. He is super fair as he gives you a chance to use your own work on your exam so it's really a class where you get what you give. Exams are pretty tough in this class so you gotta study.
This is an awesome class because it's on welfare and makes you really just think about the content! This class has a lot of tough topics but you do learn a lot!
Repro was one of my fav classes and I don't know if I would want to take it with any other professor, Martin makes this topic so fun and enjoyable! Funny Funny content! This class is again a class you get out what you put in, but totally worth the effort!
Martin has easily been the best part of my WSU experience, like a true professor that not only makes everyday interesting but also genuinely aims to see you succeed at the highest level. Review from April 11th 2021 is just a salty student I know that puts everything off to the last minute and expected to be spoon fed anything due to being online
The review from April 11th is a girl in my class that was quite salty and just rude overall. This is my second class with Martin and he is a fabulous professor, he gives out lots of extra credit for attending class, quizzes are relatively easy, and loves to answer any questions you may have, even if he has to do some research. Highly recommend.
Martin is the best prof! He made online classes fun, was super understanding, and made sure to answer any question, even if it meant researching it later and bringing it up in the next class. Plenty of extra credit, difficult exams, lots of content. He does take forever to return grades sometimes. Overall one of the best professors I've ever had!
Martin is an amazing professor, but you will get from his classes what you put in. He expects you to work and to genuinely try, and if you don't, you WILL fail the class. He's funny and makes learning the boring stuff entertaining, and is always there to support you if you need some help sorting out the complicated stuff.
I love that he make his class really fun and he want to you to work hard and he is amazing professor
I had Martin for AS 101 and 285 and he's one of my favorite professors. He makes lectures fun and entertaining and offers extra credit opportunities just for showing up to class. You can tell he loves his job and wants to help his students. The only thing is he doesn't always respond to emails--if you put 'spicy' in the subject he usually responds.
takes forever to grade, does not answer emails and will say that on first day, procrastinates on posting homework to canvas. does NOT curve because if one person can do good, so can everyone else.
Dr. Maquivar is an amazing professor who is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and cares about his students. Lectures are interesting and important to attend. There is not a lot of homework and the homework will help prepare you for the exams. Labs are awesome as well!
Despite forgetting to post assignments and taking awhile to grade, he's an amazing professor. He teaches so many classes at once so I understand why he is so frazzled and forgetful. He really is the backbone of Animal Science. He is super funny and makes learning fun. Exams are hard but he provides lots of extra credit and other assignments.
tough grader, forgets to post homework, takes ages to grade assignments, doesn't answer emails, major procrastinator
forgets to post homework, does NOT respond to emails, does not grade within a reasonable time, half of my paper is ungraded from over 3 months ago, major procrastinator.
forget emailing him, he says on the first day of class he wont answer. procrastination is his best friend. Showed up during office hours multiple times and he wasn't there. Grades last minute, so have fun stressing all semester about your grade
He is very funny, and enthusiastic a lot however, he is terrible at grading, and will laugh at you if you ask questions during class. He can be very downright rude sometimes. You constantly have to remind him to post the homework or else you'll never get anything done in this class.
This was Martin's worst semester, I have taken multiple classes with him in the past but he has completely gone downhill this semester. He needs to take a step back from so many classes. He is so far behind in everything it makes it frustrating for students
He gave up this semester. Won't respond to emails. NEVER posts assignments on time and when they do post they have errors. Assigned extra credit all semester then at the end decided to make them a category that was 20% of our grade. Always behind schedule. Rude and condescending when you ask questions. Can't avoid him as an AS major but be careful!
Be in class! some of the activities count as Extra credit and In-class assignments! If you are not in class you will miss those points at the end! Hard class but you if you study you will do well.
Martin is great. There are definitely a lot of concepts that are covered so be prepared to study. He allows cheat sheets for the midterm exams. His lectures are funny and he is very passionate about these topics.
Martin is hands down the best animal science professor. He's funny, really has a passion for the topics and overall wonderful. Showing up to class matters with a lot of in class assignments, but most are answering a few questions, regardless if they're right you get credit. Cheat sheets can be used for exams, and at home quizzes. 15/10 love him.
This course is pretty hard, a lot of information to memorize for exams but a pretty fun class, goes through the slides super fast so you kind of have to go back and take notes on your time. Lecture attendance is not mandatory but is for the lab sections. Does not reply to emails! Must email the TAs if you need an answer at all.
I loved this class if your debating taking it do it! I had the same teacher for 101 and he was way better in this class. There are two essays all semester, make sure to read the syllabus and check back about once a week, for the due dates. Class is not mandatory but he does in-class assignments randomly
Professor Martin is awesome and very freaking smart. He is a wonderful educator with a wide variety of knowledge, and some interesting grammar LOL. His exams are hard even with a cheat sheet allowed, but as long as you pay attention to his lectures, take good notes, AND STUDY you'll be okay.
Very enthusiastic with his lectures, but it's all in good fun. He's very understanding and will avoid giving you homework over the weekend if it means pushing the assignment back an entire week. I highly recommend taking this class even if it's not required for your major, there is a lot of valuable information to learn.
Lectures were entertaining, made it fun to come to class. Would just read from slides though and would post them so it would seem pointless to come to class sometimes. Homework was easy-open note and online. Cheat sheets allowed on exams. Professor made class more fun.
Loved the professor.
Great professor! lots of material to study for exams so start early !! He allows cheat sheets on first exam and midterm which is very helpful. I would suggest emailing TA for help because martin tends to not respond to emails.
Overall really enjoyed this professor. The lectures were easy to understand and take notes from. Helpful study material was provided.
Martin is probably by far one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very passionate about the material he teaches and is able to keep his lectures interesting and entertaining. However, I will say that his exams are pretty difficult, but he does allow for a cheat sheet on each exam. Fill it out AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE it is honestly very useful
This guy is hilarious and almost everyone I've talked to loves him, I didn't go to a lot of the lectures just because they were so early but the ones I did go to were always pretty fun. The accent is pretty easy to understand after a few lectures. Cheat sheets on the exams were a lifesaver, do not just skip them.
If you want to go to vet school, avoid taking him. There was information in his lectures that is just wrong if you Google it. He isn't my first choice as a teacher, and I won't be taking him again.
Martin is such a funny professor! He is super knowledgeable and makes his lectures super engaging. His exams are tough but study as much as you can through the semester and it will be okay.
This is the easiest class he teaches by far. I've taken two of his other classes and he is both a wonderful professor and a kind human being. Attendance is not mandatory, but he keeps us on our toes by assigning homework and in-class assignments that are not on canvas or the syllabus.
Consistent incorrect information on slides in homework/quizzes. Will not answer emails, quite rude about policies like that and lectures are just him reading off a slideshow. No textbook so you are stuck with these slides only for studying, and there is no communication between him and TA's. It shows. Lab sheet pdfs given to print 2hrs before lab.
I really wanted to adore him, but a few interactions with him veered me off. Seems like he chooses favorites. Along with that, he writes the exams a little confusingly and it causes the class average to be seriously low. He is interesting in lectures, but goes very fast and doesn't give enough time to take notes. He speeds through as time goes on.
I found him to be a nice guy for the most part but I didn't like the way the lectures were organized and it made it confusing to follow and take notes. The tests are also written a little confusingly and some small information that was taught isn't correct if you research it. However if you try hard you can get a good grade.
