Lectured right out of the book, with little outside examples. Lab was just a lecture, with the following lecture being exactly what was taught in lab. Boring.
Yep, right out of the book, monotonous droning. He has this interesting expression though... his eyebrows are usually pulled halfway up his forehead, which could relieve some of the boredom.
He's boring but gives lots of extra credit. You can get an A quite easily in his class. He's very helpful also
He was always willing to help out. If you had a question he didn't have an answer to, he always found the answer and got back to you. Labs were fun, but the microscope slides, through no fault of his own, needed to be replaced.
He's so nice and helpful, and teaches in a relaxing atmosphere.
He's a very nice/humorous instructor and gives very clear/understandible lecture. He doesn't teach hella fast and make you feel like your are too stupid for Bio, but not too slow to make you feel like you've learn nothing either.
Melia is great, not boring; the SUBJECT is boring, but his lectures made it as interesting and memorable as possible. He is straightforward, and if you read what he tells you to read, you'll get an A. He really cares about his students & is helpful.
He is very nice and understaning guy. His exams are relatively very easy if you go to his lectures regularly. He is also ready to explain to you more in his office hours. I like him very very much. Definitely recommended instructor.
He's a nice guy, but the worst teacher. He's unorganized, and is not consistant with his grading when it comes to lab exams. It's easy to get an A in his class, but if you really wanna be inspired and learn something, take it with another teacher.
What can I say. I like the guy. His lectures are very clear. He is a very fair grader and he is extremely accessiable to his students. He was the only way that I was able to survive Biology. You have to work but he'll bend over backwards for you.
He is super nice. He is very Organized, very close to the book. His grading is very fair. Unlike other instructors, professor Melia is very straight forward in his lecture, no trickery or BS around. Highly recommended. I really love the field trip.
Very nice instructor. He cares his students and very understanding. I like him. Highly recommended.
You have got to be kidding right? He's SO unorganized that after we all filled out the evaluation form, he got back to us to fill out ANOTHER one to give ideas on how to organize the class better as too many ppl felt it was too unorganized.
He's a good guy and all but his lectures and labs are long and DRAINING! He goes into TOO MUCH DETAIL and rarely lets us out early. The cool thing is that he bases all his exams on the study guides and lecture notes he provides so you don't even need read the book!
I'm currently taking Bio40A this fall qrt. He is a great teacher, to the point and tests are based on handouts and lecture, not to say its easy but you get prepared and know what to expect. Very nice, funny guy. I'll be taking him for 40B & 40C
Lectures were interesting. Prof. Melia is knowledgeable in the subject. Tests were straightforward and not too long. Lab was fine too. Overall a good, funny guy who seems to love teaching.
Organized? You guys must be kidding. I had him in the fall of 2003 and he lost two of our tests and had to postpone them.. He can't pronounce latin words to save his life. Very nice guy but not a science teacher I'd recommend.
Great teacher. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, very helpful. Very available to students with questions, clear criteria.
The material isn't easy, but he makes it fascinating. Once you get interested, it becomes a lot easier! Clear objectives. Excellent, funny & entertaining lectures. Explains things in clear & simple terms. My all-time favorite teacher!
he is a very good and easy teacher, his notes r to the point, just study it ,u don't have to see the text book also, his exams r easy,so if u have to take bio,u must take under him,I am not a bio person, but just b'coz of him I start liking it and I am getting good grade n he loves giving student good grade and sometimes extra credit:-)
Good instructor, he enjoys teaching Bio 40 A,B,C. Read and study HARD. He gives you points off the top, but know way for extra credit. Multiple choice exams in Lec, but in Lab you must be specific. It is in no way easy, but you can do it if you study hard.
best teacher ever. made anatomy very straight forward and understandable. is always there to explain or help with stuff that don't understand. tests are fair, just follow his lecture notes
Took this Professor for Fall.He is a Nice guy and Very clear on lectures,HOWEVER,His exams are a bit tricky and hard.I took all his lecture notes and never missed a class,it seemed he based a lot of his questions from the book. What is the point of taking notes? I should have just read the whole book!I find his lecture class hard and does not give a
honestly I don't really like his teaching style. And the test is little bit tricky.
Wonderful teacher. Very straight forward. Fair grader. Lecture exams are multiple choice & are based on the lecture notes & study questions in the book. Lab exams are tricky though but are very doable if you study. Very helpful, clear. Nice guy. He gives points off the top, so the grade you earn is what you get. He enjoys teaching anatomy & it show
I can just say, WONDERFUL INSTRUCTOR. I'm so glad that I'll be in his BIO40B in Winter quarter.
Mr. Melia is a fantastic instructor! His lectures are clear, he does not add unnecessary material and he is available to clarify material. I am glad I took his class; I have learned more than I expected. You DO need to be in class every day & do take notes during lecture in order to get a good grade. This is not a kick-back class. The Best for A&P.
Great teacher. Fair grading policy and always there when you need him.He lets you know what you need to know for the exams, plus.. he bakes you cookies for the lab quizs.
He is a good teacher. He lectures on what you need to know for the tests only. And for lab exams you know exactly what you need to know for it. He's straight forward! I'm taking him for 40C too!!!!
He's an awsome teacher!!! He gives you study guides that has everything you need to know for the exams (AKA~ Your Universe). Plus!! He bakes you cookies before each lab exam. He also tries to be funny... Someone should tell him not to quit his day job...haha. He's one of the best teachers at Foothill so far.
Good Teacher...has a genuine interest in the success of his students and enjoys teaching. Lab tests are very straightforward -- Lecture exams are more difficult -- attendance and reading the book are necessary to do well in the class.
Great teacher. Easy class if you've taken AP bio.
VERY NICE GUY, VERY HARD TESTS. YOU'LL LEARN A LOT. TOOK 3 QUARTERS OF a&p FROM HIM.
he is the easiest A&P teacher. All his test questions come from the questions he gives you online. You can answer them during the class. (Tape recorder recommended, so you go back and answer all that you may miss). With the tape recorder you don't need to buy the book, for all three qrts. You need the lab book, Lab is straight from the printout.
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHER EVER!! EVERY ORGANIZE. FUN AND EASY GOING. YOU'LL GET WANT YOU'LL GET DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH YOU STUDY.
He's totally sweet! I don't think he's the most challenging after taking Lopez for 40C and Branagan for 40B. I'd say he's pretty easy. Answer all your objective set questions in class and study right from that! Nice teacher and dresses nice too!
I took this class over 1 year ago...and he is still THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!! He actually made learning a pleasure. The tests were straight forward. I recommend taking Lopez for lecture and him for lab. Take him IF you get "things" easy (not a lot of explanation needed). Kind of like a Comedy A&P Lab!
I beleive he is one of the best biology teacher. He is very orgnize and this make it realy easier and more clear about what he wants for exams. I highly recommend him and I will take 40b and 40c with him.
Martin Melia is BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!! He knows how to make a difficult subject understandable and fun. Martin has a way with clearly laying out all expectations. The objective set questions are clear and covered in class. If you study from these you will get an A in the class. I wish more of the BIO teachers at Foothill were like him!
Best teacher!! lecture is organized, he stresses important points and is fair to all students. very approachable and always willing to help. easy to get an A in his class as long as you pay attention to his lectures. he makes class fun too.
Great teacher!!
One of the BEST TEACHERS in Foothill!! Nice, Helpful, Funny, grades fairly. His classes are very well organized. I Love to attend his class.
go to lecture and take good notes and you should get an A, most of his exam questions come straight from lecture notes. nice teacher and enjoyed his classes.
He is very helpful and quite funny. Good lecturer. A lot of students really like him.
Martin Melia is THE BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!!! He makes learning fun and interesting. He is also extremely fair in terms of grading. He ALWAYS adds in between 4-6 extra points to everyones exams. If you are taking 40 A/B/C it MUST BE WITH MARTIN! Careful...his classes fill up QUICKLY!!!
The objective set questions are really helpful for staying focused during the 2 hour lecture, which can become long and boring. They are also very helpful for studying for exams, which contain tons of info. Prof. Melia is a nice guy, and makes class interesting.
"SIMPLY THE BEST"
Ok, lab quizzes but extremely hard lecture exams. I studied as he instructed on how to study for his lecture exams and ended up with a failing grade. When you e-mail him it takes a few e-mails to actually get a reply from him. Not very good at getting back to students who are seeking help from him. Lectures are boring. Take another instructor..
Martin is the greatest teacher. He makes the material fun and interesting. He's got a lot of character and interacts with the class. He doesn't just lecture for 2 hours, he engages the class. He tells you exactly what to study for (for both lecture and lab exams). The tests aren't difficult as long as you study his outlines. Very great teacher!!
If you study hard, you'll do well. He asks fair questions, and provides a study outline which (if followed) will help you do well. Doesn't try to be intentionally tricky on tests.Unlike some instructors, he doesn't have a huge ego, and he's flexible.
He's an awsome teacher!!! He gives you study guides that has everything you need to know for the exam. He's one of the best teachers at Foothill so far.
Lecture exams are impossible. Questions on the Objective Set Questions are COMPLETELY different than what is on the actual exam. Great Labs.. that is the only thing that can save your grad if you cannot get a handle of the lecture exams. Take Erin Kew, she is much better and worth waiting for if she isn't teaching the section you need.
Take another instructor. The objective set questions he gives you are at times are about 95 questions or over per chapter. One lecture exam consisted of 173 questions and that is not including the A. B. C. etc questions. He can test you on verbal things that are said in both lab and lecture so you must pay attention. Missing class is NOT an option.
Most of the class passed with C's and has said that he was hard throughout the past two quarters. He does give you all that you need for the exams but still manages to surprise you on the actual test. His labs are a lot better than the lectures but not recommended for students who want an A or a B for the Biology series.
He doesn't give back the tests and doesn't go over the lecture exams. The lecture exams were the hardest. Since we didn't know which ones we got wrong, we never got better at it with the following exams. Lots of students couldn't get passing grades in the lecture exams even with hours of study time. Your gpa will go down taking Melia.
He is the best teacher for All A/B/C. I took all classes with him. You need to attand everyday if you want to get A.I got A in all classes eventhough I am ESL student. All multiple choices lecture exams are not that easy but if you go to class and study lecture notes and objective sets, you will do fine. I would recommended. Lab are super easy.
Best instruter I ever had at foothill, he was clear and to the point. I wish I could have him for all my biology classes
Fabulous teacher! Very clear, and most importantly, can hold your attention through lectures. Just don't miss class, and you will do well! Definitely will take this prof again next quarter for 40 B.
Martin Melia is the BEST TEACHER I have ever had at foothill! I really learned a lot from him! His lectures are very interesting and he is very clear about what he wants you to learn! I might change my major to bio! :)
he's the best teacher i've ever had. i have taken classes at west valley and no one come close to how he teaches this course.he's awesome, keep it up martin.
Very effective and fair teacher. Crystal clear learning expecations via lectures, written objectives and study guides. The text is the bible. A few "trick" questions on tests, but mostly straightforward. He is very accessible and has empathy for learning disabilties.
I had the 3 bio classes in a row with him. Hi is the best teacher ever. he give you a study guide and a lot of extra points. He loves to teach his class and related the material with funny jokes. You have to study mo make it in this class.
I have to say that Martin is one of the best instructor (this is comparing to instructors I've had for two bachelor's degrees). He is a demanding instructor in that he demands your full attention in class and that you take this class seriously. It is not hard to get an A in class if you go to the class, pay attention and take notes (he writes out
This was probably the worst teacher I have ever had in college thus far. He was not knowledgable about the subject, didn't answer students questions, and was ruthless when it came to grading. I received a 89.56% in the class and he still gave me a B.
Martin lays down the law the first week which can be scary, but I think he does it to keep us in line. He does have very good classroom management. He effectively prevents chatters, laggers, and slackers. I do wish he was more approachable. He keeps a very firm boundary and doesn't chat with students. Wish he would tho.
very clear on what he expects
Failed all the three times I've taken his class but it just made me realize I needed to switch majors. haha Great teacher and the best of them all. If science is yo thang, take it from him!! Great lectures, funny, gives detailed notes and tests on everything he gives out so you know what is up!! Don't be late!!! Wish he made his infamous cookies!
great teacher, predictable tests, very fair
It doesn't get any more straightforward than Melia! Super easy lab quizzes, easy lecture tests that are straight from his objective set questions, lots of easy easy extra credit. Doesn't seem to know much outside of what he teaches in class, but he gets the job done.
Very straight forward instructor. 3 midterms no final, 5 online quizzes, 3 lab quizzes. Be sure to do OS questions and study guide for the lab and you're set! Doesn't know much outside of what he has to teach you, but tries his best. Overall a pretty go A&P Professor =)
Took the summer class with him and had taken Anat B lab with him. Great teacher, very personable, reasonable requirements. Extra credit built into the quizzes and exams. Since only two exams and with accelerated class pace, it was tough but doable. Class final average was 84%. Exam averages were 79% and 80% so tough and study hard for them.
I don't about his lecture...but for lab, he's super easy. He didn't even make us look at the model! Although he's easy, you still need to study since it is a lot of memorization. I really like how he takes the time to go to each table and show us the model and explain it in more detail. I think I manage to get an A in bio because of his lab exams
Great Guy, no guessing about anything, dry sense of humor, Very straight forward about material, extra credit built into exams, concise and comprehensive study guides for lab & lecture exams. Must study, memorize, use book and attend lecture to do well in this class. But if you are willing to work hard and play by rules good prof.
If you attend class and lab and use the study guides provided, there's no reason you can't do well. Melia really wants you to learn and retain the material. I thought the lecture exams were hard, but more than fair and generous w/ extra points.
Great teacher and very helpful. His classes are very organized and that makes a huge difference. He is funny as well.
One of the best Anatomy and Physiology professors! His teaching is extremely clear and his tests are beyond reasonable. He gives you all the tools to succeed! I recommend him hands down! He has a great personality and makings the subject fun to learn! Study what he tells you too and you will get an A!
Awesome professor. If you go to class and study from his study guide you'll do great. Not trying to trick you on test just getting you to learn topic!
Martin is an absolute gem. He is one of the best or perhaps the very best instructor at Foothill. He is friendly, knowledgeable and utterly organized. Best of all, he is easy with a capital E. His classes consists of 3 lecture exams and 4 lab exams, all of which have extra credit points built right in.
By far one of the best teachers I've ever had! Organized, on time, knowledgeable, funny, and approachable to name a few. He seems a bit strict at first, but stay with his program and you'll do fine. He literally has everything laid out for student's success. Read the book, go to class, take notes, and study the guides and you're all good!
The best biology teacher I have ever had! Very organized. His tests are directly from him notes. Make sure you study hard for the lecture tests because they are worth a lot more. He is willing to help and is always on time. You must attend class everyday but he makes the class enjoyable.
AWESOME GREAT TEACHER! would recommend everyone to take him! MAKES LEARNING FUN AND NOTHING NEAR BORING! if i had 2more thumbs i would give him a 4THUMBS UP!!!!!!!!! =D
I just wanted to say that Martin is a great teacher!! Great, interesting lecturer, he really wants to see his students succeed. That doesn't mean his class isn't difficult, you still have to study your butt off, however he gives you everything you need if you attend lecture and lab. I am so glad that I had him!! Thanks Martin!
I wish more professors were like Martin! He makes me want to come to class because his jokes are hilarious and he has a very positive attitude! His lectures are very clear and his exams are very straight-forward. He doesn't try to trick you on exams, unlike other profs. I would highly recommend taking him if you want a good grade!
Excellent Professor, Very straight forward.... Bravo! Wish all professors were like Melia. Take notes, read the book for clarity, study, get a easy grade. That's it. A professor who want his students to learn BIOLOGY.
Martin teaches a very straightforward class. He's clear and concise and gives you everything you need to get an A in the class. He makes an effort to make things interesting, but sometimes anatomy/physiology is just boring and there's not much to be done about it. No surprises on the exams, he tests directly from his notes.
He's an awesome teacher (although his jokes are sometimes bad). Melia teaches in a straightforward manner that lets you clearly understand & organize your thinking. He doesn't surprise you on exams as he pretty much tells you what is to be expected through his lab guides and exam study guides. If you need to take A&P, take it with Melia!
He is a great teacher, all of his quizzes and tests are based off of his lecture and lab notes. If you spend a few hours a week studying, then you'll be fine. The only reason I gave a 4 for clarity is because during the Bone unit, his lecture was incredibly fast-paced. He still waited for the class, but it was really a lot to take in.
Took both Bio40A & 40B. He is extremely funny BUT strict when it comes to eating, drinking & cellphone going off in class. He offers study guides, which is all you need to have to study but book is a MUST too. Online quizzes you can take as many times you want by deadline. I took Roseann Berg for Biology. She is a easier grader & is sweet.
Took 40A, B, and C with Martin. I would recommend. He's a good teacher- very clear with the explanations and straight forward about what will be on the tests. It takes a little bit of work, but the tests are easy A's if you use study guides he posts. He's pretty funny too.
He's NOT hot...like in his 60's! A GREAT teacher. He teaches confidently, doesn't fight you on questions asked, knows the material and wants you to know it too. Tests are straight forward, no games.
Great Teacher! clear on what he wants you to learn and gives you a study guide. Always helpful and willing to take time to explain things. I only wish he could teach other courses
Great teacher! Took all 3 quarters with him and had a blast!! He's very straight forward on what he wants you to know, but sometimes were a bit tricky. Lectures were fun, he tries to relate things so its easier to remember. If your not a fast writer you may need to record but he does give a lil time to catch up. I wish he taught more classes!
If you print and follow the lecture study guides, you will get an A in this class. My favorite instructor at Foothill thus far. Prepare for a lot of notes and a few good laughs. He is strict but fair.
Martin Melia should teach other instructors how to instruct. He is awesome, and makes learning fun. Very knowledgeable on the subject and lets students know how each quiz and exam will be. Very clear teaching method, and easy to follow!! I highly recommend taking his Anatomy and Physiology classes!
Treats students like elementary school kids. This is college and we are adults.
Treats us like little kids with a lot of dumb strict rules. Easy A just do study guides by reading textbook and study it questions r same on test. no comprehensive final. Never went to lecture, did study guide and got A's on all tests. lab boring never to leave early. goes over everything very thoroughly in labs. easier and clear then roseann berg
goes off on tangents when answering questions in class, needs to learn to tell people what belongs in office hours; questions are fine when you can actually get through the material but literally a third of the class' topics was covered in 2 lectures at the end because so much time was wasted - a good chunk of which is still on the quizzes
Martin is a great teacher. He is very organized with his lectures and notes. He is very approachable and no games. A nice guy and knows his stuff. Wish I would have taken him for 40 A too.
Unorganized & often gives info that is inconsistent with the text. Wastes time by going off on tangents. I took B&C with Martin & for both he ran out of time delivering material for the final. Also treats students like children.
Martin is a very clear and very fair teacher. He has a very clear outline that he follows and tells you what you need to know on his tests. Once you get his testing style down it is very possible to get an A, very straightforward in his testing
I have had a great experience with Melia. He is clear in his expectations from his students. They way he lays out the course makes us reiterate materials and really prepare for his exams. Great teacher that prepares you for university level courses. I am actually learning in his class!
Great teacher! Very engaging lectures. Super intelligent, down to earth guy! I felt really well prepared for other bio classes I took after this. His exams are not easy, but his outlines and online quizzes are totally preparatory for the exams. You'll do fine if you study those and come to class.
Strict teacher , with a lot of rules (can cost you points). Must attend lectures and labs are mandatory. Lectures are dry and straightforward. Provides study guides which are helpful for lecture exams, but tests are tricky for an already hard subject. When it comes to the lab portion you may memorize 120 items with 13 on the test. Goodluck!
Melia is a hard tester. The first test I got a B, as well as the lecture but he did warn us that after that test it wouldn't get any easier. I would think his lectures are clear but when it came to the test, it wasn't at all. I didn't pass this class because of the last two lecture exams. Use the text book to pass the class instead of his notes
When preparing for lab quizzes and lecture exams study the outline of the study guide it pretty much reflects on the exam. You are able to take online quizzes multiple times with the time limit of 2 hrs. Over all class was tough for me to be honest. STUDY HARD and GOODLUCK! I'm going to continue taking melia for the A&P series.
Extremely difficult !!! His exams are very very difficult and his class is more like boot camp!!!! Do not take him!
Uses notecards during lecture for attendance. Labs are fun but covers a lot of materials as well as lectures!!! TAKE NOTES. Don't really need text, but lab manual is a must! Gives really helpful study guides so use them !!!! 3 Online quizzes, 3 lab quizzes, 2 lab exams, 1 final exam. study study study the pictures/slides and study guides on etudes.
Lectures are long and he is not enthusiastic. His tests are very tricky. He tests on lecture material, does not use power point or post lectures so if you miss something, you will get it wrong on the exam. He does not return emails and NEVER told the class about the STEM center where you can get help from tutors. Don't recommend!
Finished the entire Bio40 A,B,C series with Martin and I must say that he is a good professor. Reading the textbook is a must to understand the material as well as doing the lab book. Getting good grades in his class is not difficult if you are willing to put a lot of effort in this class.
I took the whole BIO40ABC series with Melia and he was a great teacher, one of my favorite professors and classes of all time. Really funny and makes learning simple with the study guides. He tells you what's on the exam and like other students say, you really don't need the text book. Class notes are all you need. An A is definitely achievable.
I took for Melia for B and C; BEST decision ever! I wish I took him for A too. His lectures were clear and easy to understand. He makes me enjoy learning about Anatomy and Physiology. He also has fun labs. He's one of my favorite professors. I'm glad to have taken his B and C class before he retired. He definitely deserves a good retirement!
Horrible horrible horrible. He rushes through lectures. Doesnt follow the textbook outline. It is basically self teaching because nothing from his lectures make sense. Dont ask him a question during an exam because he will make you feel stupid.
This professor was the hardest one in my 2years college life. I took this course for prereq for the master degree and I had to spend every day and every night to study. The lecture is good and he explains everything in details but the lecture and lab test are pretty hard and could be tricky if you do not memorize all of it. it Requires perfection.
Really good professor will give out study guides weeks in advance which allows you to study for lab and lecture exams. Will often make jokes to keep the class engaged. Lecture exams are out of his study guides so as long as you take good notes and use the study guide then an A is possible. Was pretty sad that he won't be teaching next quarter.
Really nice teacher overall, bought the e book work out great, only need it for the voc words which he gives you a voc list to do as part of hw doesn't need to be turn in tho. Then he gives you questions for the lecture notes pretty easy he goes in order which are on the exams, he does like to give you old question from previous exam.
He tries his best to make lectures interesting, really nice and very helpful BUT he won't give you extra credit, no lame excuse will save your grade either. We don't really use the book that much but it is rlly helpful to have. He's fast paced, so keep up, his practice tests are not the same as the actual test but they're easy if you pay attention.
Toughest Bio teacher I've ever had! He's nice but super strict, no extra credit. He won't let u go back to the previous questions on a test, if you mess up oh well. We had 1 lab, everything else was lecture even on lab days & we had 2 homework the whole quarter. He's all exams and quizzes, can't explain things properly & expects too much from you.
Pretty much all tests but quizzes you get 2 attempts. Prof is knowledgeable and is open to any questions you have. Do the handouts and use the textbook to ensure a good grade. It was a lot of studying, but he made the class content interesting and easier to retain. Think he was great to have at the start of the anatomy & physio series!
It’s a tough class but if you put in the effort an A is definitely doable. Contrary to what others said previously, I think the objective questions he gives out for each exam are very similar to the exam. If you are well versed in those questions you will do good on each exam.
My name is jovin and I made the discord. I do NOT recommend taking this class. It was very dookie boo boo
Lots of exams.
