spends 1/2 the class lecturing about news. Bring a pillow
Hes very strange, this class is not supposed to be about his politics.
I'd rather slam my head against the wall than sit through his class
If you want a class were you dont have to pay attention and want to sleep this is the class... he easily gets of track especially when politics are brought up.. if you wanted to tourcher someone just put melkonian in the room with someone
tough tests!
Not all THAT bad. Marty M is a rather tolerable teacher with overly liberal views. He won't turn on the air conditioner during hot days because he thinks it's killing the ozone. Gives hard tests and rambles a lot. Read the book if you want to pass.
This guy is boring, only class i've ever slept in. Test's are alright, but DON'T TAKE HIM!
brings his own political views into a class on economics in a very unappropriate mannor, he was mocked consistantly to his face by a classmate of mine throughout the entire semester and never picked up on it
VERY UNCLEAR and makes it hard to grasp the concept!
I LIKED Prof Melkonian! He was helpful and cared about his students! The test were hard, but fine if you studied. I thought he was interesting and told good stories. THANKS!
Read the book in order to pass his exams, you dont even have to pay attention to his classes. Exam material is on everything in the book. Other than that a good guy, but hard tests, stupid write up assingments and u have to attend dumb conferences. PASS!
You need to read the text to pass. He talks in class, but very little is relevant to anything on the tests.
Nice guy; a little weird but nice. As was stated before, READ THE BOOK if you want to pass.
nice guy.The class is boring. Good for catching up on sleep. his tests are very hard.Try and avoid taking this class.
Bad teacher. He's boring, and he strays from the topic a lot.
he's hard. He never wants to turn the air conditioning on because he fears it will destroy the ozone layer. (one classroom in the world)
He's a nice guy but his class is extremely boring. Everyone is always sleeping. His tests are hard & long. He makes you do stupid journals for 10 weeks that are the most annoying things to do. He also makes u go to boring lectures. Pass on his class!
Yes, there is a lot of extra-type work in this class. But half of it is pretty interesting. Easy grader. Curves his tests. Tests aren't hard if you...duh...study for the stupid things. If you don't know the material, what exactly do you expect?
Everyone complains about the poor man! I found his class enjoyable and I learned a great deal for my other economics classes. Just read the book before class and you'll be ahead of the game. I will tell you, his tests are challenging, but he curves them!
Some tips. In the beginning of class ask him a political question, anything. He'll spend atleast half the class on it, sometimes the whole class. To do well on the tests read the book n do the multiple choice questions in the cd rom that come with thebook
He seems to be good. He does get off the topic quickly when asked a question. All you have to do ic continue to read the chapters and you should be able to pass the class without a problem.
very easy curbed alot i would recommend
classes are long and boring, i never learned nething from then definately read the chapters, otherwise u will be lost! he is a very reasonable man, always offers extra forums and tonds of extra credits, and great curves on the tests
He has a fair amount of workload. Helps alot. Mainly talks about politics, so if you are interested in politics take this class but if not stay away. Most people used to sleep in class. Barely writes notes in class, always talking. Interesting.
teaches you nothing in class whatsoever, if you want to keep up in the course u have to read, tests are still hard tho... have to write a journal entry every week, final and midterms not easy......
Very intelligent. Beware of the liberal proganda he dishes out via websites, readings, and movies. Allows you to express your opinions! All and all, he knows his stuff, not alot of work either! Keep up on the readings! Take him!
This class helped me catch up on my sleep!!! SUPER BORING!!!!!
Doesn't give ALOT of notes. Lectures on the textbook. Sometimes he'll spend the whole class on politics. You have to make sure you read the book in advance to understand what he's talking about.
The man is boring as all hell. I do not suggest taking him even though he is easy. You will have to read the textbook and try your best to stay awake in class.
doesn't really stay on topic- goes off on tangents with current events. tests are extremely difficult but multiple choice- final is all essays. class is EXTREMELY boring and he takes attendance periodically. 30 page journal due at the end of the semester
Good teacher. He has a habit of going off the topic, but if you participate and give your ideas, he'll like you. Let him know how you stand on the class topics, and he'll give you effort for participation. Tests are hard, but alright if you know the book.
good guy. talks about current events in class. requires you to think which most students at hofstra are incapable of doing. hofstra students are america's future telemarketers...i have since transfered.
I took him for two classes for the simple reason that he teaches more than just economics. Alot of people don'tlike him b/c he requires your opinion in class and lets face it half of Hostra is more opinionated about what to wear than current events.
Not an easy class but you will learn a lot. If you take him, go to class, pay attention and do the work. No extensive studying required unless you slack off in class. Funny guy too, participate and class will be easier.

There is no one more boring than this guy.
class is PAINFULLY BORING, goes off on a tangent a lot, spends most of class talking about current event. always expressing his personal views and rhetorics. make you write 30 journal entries which is are complete waste of time because you do not learn anything from them
LOVED HIM.... freshman could not appreciate him
he is a good professor and relates what u R learning to current events, for me I have to study a lot to do well on the tests I think it's just a bad subject for me. The journal really helps if you do well, it is not hard to do I did well in yhe class, and thats with not doing to well on the first te
i took this hist class during jan session and i found that it was taught really well... we watched alot of movies and he basically discussed his opinions which was fine all in all the only bad thing was the 30 pg journal otherwise id say prof melkonian was great
knows his stuff, nice guy, you have to do the work but it's not bad. made class interesting with current events. good class.
The class was boring, but it's eco how exciting can it be? The book was his shortened version of the text (cheap). Taught well. Midterm - easy if you read the chapters and paid attn in class (took notes). It was curved anyway. The final-essay questions, but he handed out a review sheet before the test.
Can be really easy or really hard depending how much you read the book or study the notes he gives. Tests are easy if you studied. Don't leave the articles for the last week of class or its a pain
I took ZERO notes. All I read from the book was the introduction. I fell asleep sitting in the front row, and still pulled a B+. Very easy, very fair, but incredibly boring. Some work/discussions have NOTHING to do with Economics, either.
This class is really easy and is a great substitute to ECO 1 if you are PSC major. He can be extremely boring but if you read the paper a little and participate its not that bad. Midterm is straight from the book and current events. He gave us choice to either take a final or write a paper and there was a journal that was easy...
Melkonian is a pretty easy grader. He puts large curves on his exams pretty much ensuring a decent grade for everyone. He is not the most unbiased Professor however he is a nice guy. I did very little work for this course which mostly involved journals on articles that I threw together at the end of the semester.
He is a nice guy but can be boring since he talks with a very, mellow voice. If you got to take Economics, you should try and get him. He really doesn't use the text book and his lectures are straight foward and easy, not to mention off topic at times.
He's an soft professor who loves to get on tangents. If you need the Economic credit but don't want to suffer, take him.
Very boring class but he is a nice professor. take him
borrrinnngg class, but hes a nice guy. take notes on what he says but read the book as often as possible cuz he doesnt give much notes. his tests are pretty fair as long as you study you'll be fine.
Nice professor. All he wants is his students to read the textbook and pay attention in class. If you read and do any work required, the grade will be good. If you need Eco 1, take him!!!
i love hiiimm. he looks like the grasshopper from james and the giant peach. class is boring but he is really fair. just read the text book and you will do fine on the tests. the only written work was a short journal thats due at the end of the semester. hes very very liberal and cares alot about the environment. def recommend for eco hes awesome.
His class is very boring, you have to really want to pay attention because he does not make it interesting at all, but he is extremely knowledgeable on the topic, he gives alot of chances for extra credit, and is a nice guy..Reccommend him for those who REALLY want to learn about economics (especially those majoring in ECO.)
He is an incredibly knowledgeable teacher but his classes are boring since he lectures on and on. He is a fair grader and as long as you read the text and participate in class, you'll do fine. He gives alot of extra credit chances, but don't take him unless you're an Economics major.
He is really nice and gives alot of chances for extra credit. the class itself is boring. one can easily just sleep in class because he just repeats what the textbook says. 2 midterms and a final. midterms are mult choice and final is essay.
Professor Melkonian was great! If you have some prior economics knowledge, this class is a piece of cake. No homework, just a journal that is due at the end of the semester. If you don't keep this until the last minute and listen in class, you will be fine! He is a nice guy too!
Let's just say I wish he taugh Economics 2. The syllabus is one page with readings, that aren't even required because he lectures them. The only tests are two midterms and an essay final. If you pay attention and put effort in you will be fine. He's also a nice guy. If you need to get this class done, take him.
Awesome guy, really straight forward.
I liked him. Good guy. Straight-forward exams. Easy A.
Very good teacher, and really nice guy. He makes sure to go over everything. As for the journal, he just wants to see that you read what he asked, thought a little about it, and used spell check. It doesn't have to be genius work. He's very accommodating, and considering how technical the subject is, he still keeps it relevant and interesting.
He is great. He was really helpful when explaining things and was always willing to go further into depth. He discussed more than the basics and connected it to the economy now. He was a bit dry though, it took some effort to stay awake. But, overall he was really helpful.
stay clear from this professor..tests are very hard and hes a horrible teacher. i didnt understand a word he said and it was so hard to stay awake in class since he is EXTREMELY boring
BORINGG
I got an A- in his class He is a nice guy and very knowledgeable however he is extremely boring many of the people in my class would go wide awake and end up sleeping through his class. He tends to go off topic a lot and his lectures really do not help you on the test, I would not take him again I didn't learn anything
Really nice guy i would take him again just be prepared for boring lectures but easy grader.
Please do not make the same mistake I did by taking his class. BORING IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. He goes over only a portion of each chapter and then talks about the problems with the world. Whenever it was super hot in the classroom and the air conditioner was on, he would turn it off to "save energ and trees." Difficult to follow, textbook sucks.
Martin Melkonian is a very interesting professor. His left-wing bias is often evident but his discussions are always stimulating. Very easy grader and a nice person unless you're a slacker.
Class involved a good amount of reading, and small assignments. Must attend at least 2 economic seminars on campus and write a small reaction paper. Exams follow lecture notes and text book. I thought it was impossible to score decently without studying and attending class. Got a B+, can't complain..just do the work and suck it up.
"Melkonian was a good teacher. His class lectures were probably very boring for some but I personally enjoyed them. If you are interested in Economics (and a good listener), you'll be fine in his class. Tests are proportional to the TEXTBOOK and little of the lectures. Melkonian is a nice guy; if you put a effort in you can pull a B+ or higher"
Melkonian is the nicest man and his class is straight-forward and easy. READ THE BOOK and you will ace the course. You should attend class, but he can be hard to understand at times.
His midterms are hard but the final was so easy. I find him a little boring but he is a really great professor. I would definitely take him again. you do not need great class notes, but you should read the text and extra materials. He does a lot of current events, but that helps your grade. If you give him a little attention he gives you a ton back
I don't know why some people think he's boring. He teaches you very useful stuffs and they think his lectures are very practical and interesting. You don't just learn how things are in theory, he tells you how they work in real life. Listen well in class and read the textbook before the tests, you'll do fine
You can learn in this class but he is a very boring professor. If you read the textbook you will be okay.
Good teacher. Very boring class. Rant on B.S. for the whole class.
Love him. He's the best!
Good, easy teacher. He rambles on in class a lot about personal experiences, opinions, etc. but not a lot of what he says in class will be on the 2 quizzes that he gives during the semester. Offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. Read the book if you want a good grade.
Meh. This guy should honestly teach world issues/sustainability. He can't stay on topic for more than 2 minutes. He's a decent guy though. Take him if you're not too keen on economics.
Professor Melkonian's class was remarkable! He incorporated current events into his economics lectures, making them more relatable and interesting. The midterm exams were challenging, but as long as you take good notes and look over the textbook you'll do fine. Fortunately, the final exam was easy since he provides a review sheet beforehand.
Wonderful professor. Take an interest in what he is saying and he can pen doors for you at the university. He has been involved for many years and is an excellent person to know.
Okay this professor is really nice, yet his notes in class don't really matter. LEARN FROM THE TEXTBOOK. He gives so many extra credit opportunities it's insane. There are 2 tests and then the final. Plus journal entries. He curves every test. Just do your journals, extra credits and study from the textbook and you'll be set!
Appreciates participation in class. Makes the material relevant and gives a list of articles to read and reflect at the beginning of class. Very good teacher who cares for his students and his subject matter.
Cares a whole lot about climate change and will talk about it every class. Pay attention to lecture which are interesting and you will pass
Knowledgeable professor and funny guy. However, he kept assigning work that was never on the syllabus which stressed a lot of us out. We would scramble to do the new assignments that were intended to go over the next class, just for them not to be discussed, handed in, or graded. Learned a lot but needed to remind him there's other classes we take
Hes a nice guy but his lectures will put you to sleep quicker than anesthesia. Study the material on your own in order to do well. You wont learn anything from him aka gargamel.
Prof Melkonian never followed his syllabus. He would rarely write notes on the board and instead talk about current events in today's economy. Occasionally he'd draw a graph or notes to help us understand but that was it. He'd test us on materials we'd never learn in class. Just read the textbook and do the weekly articles and you'll get an A.
