Extremely rude. If he ask you a question and you don't know it, then his favorite line is "you should go into Arts instead of Engineering". Insults his students at every given opportunity. His midterms/finals have a messed up marking scheme!
This guy's teaching is extremely structured and he is very organized. But that's all he has going for him. don't expect this guy to help you if he doesn't like you. He exhibits a strong tendancy for preferential treatments, and if you're not on his nice list he will screw you on your final.

He's a great professor. His notes and lectures are excellent. He is a bit rude with students sometimes but its actually hilarious. Oh yea, he'll always start off the class by saying "Good-morning ladies and gentlemen, questions, concerns, or comments"....its funny. He sounds like a KGB agent. LOL
He is a very gentle person and treats everybody gently as well. He is very organized and acts really professionally. His quizes and misterm are easy, but the final is hard. He is really strict about manners as well. He also gives out prizes to students who participate in his discussions. He is sometimes a little bit too fast.
one of my worst exp. in engineering
This prof is extremely rude. he's good at explaining things but he treats almost everyone with disrespect. I was quite fund of him at the beginning but knowledge is very unworthy if not combined with respect to other people. Yea, and he does not allow ppl who are late to enter the class, yet he himself is late sometimes.
hehe, he's quite helarious but rude.
"Questions, comments, concerns, if there is nothing we can move on with our intellectual discussion regarding Bipolar Transistors." Absolutely the funniest prof I have ever had. I love how he talks about how we should dress professionally and not like street bums. Dont like it when he kicks ppl out for eating or being late. Good prof though....
All you hurt bags that keep complaining about this prof. are just incompetent. He's an excellent teacher and he is right about professionalism because you 3rd yr. students act so immature. Its good he set you guys straight! He is by far the best prof in electrical engineering and he's also hilarious.
Excellent prof, very organized, course focuses on electronic design and is taught in a very organized and structured fashion. Treats students as engineers, the course is very practical and opens doors for graduates to work as consulting engineers.
He is by far the best professor in ECE. Strict, organised and focused, provides very generous office hours and pays particular attention to fairness and order in the classroom. His analogies are excellent. A great researcher too, you third year crybabies should visit his homepage. Also, always looks great and professional.
He had a mean personality, treating students as enemies.

Excellent analogies. He is very strict, but if you follow the rules and attend classes regularly you will know the material well. Made me work hard but then I remembered diodes and transistors very well.
Did the course with ease. If you attend lectures and do assignments and home work by yourself you will be perfectly OK, unless you are so dumb and disorganized that should not be in ece in the first place.
He is really mean, treating students as slaves and foolishly believes that he is always right.
Excellent prof for the good to excellent students. Sure he is not liked by the low performers because he expects them to rise to excellence. Rather than trying to cheat and muddle through the course, you should really put some work in order to be successful. Dr. M outlines very clearly how to do it.
Strict, will make you work hard. If you follow directions, work daily, and attend classes, you will be fine.
Excellent organized teaching with strong practical flavor. Graduated with the feeling that I am an instrumentation designer already. He chases around the guys who behave like monies quite a bit, and if you ask me, for good reason. They have to just grow up.
Excellent organized teaching, big emphasis on focus and what he calls "ownership of the knowledge", which in fact is making you work hard on your own. Some might not like it because they are hopelessly lazy, but it worked for me. Will see what final he gives, hopefully it will be as straightforward as his midterm. Overall, a great prof.
This guy has finally showed what teaching is supposed to be. What a difference from Control. He can become hostile to ppl who are late or come unprepared for labs, so watch out.
At first I thought he was an amazing prof who was just hard on the people who disturbed class, but he turned out to be very rude and in my opinion, unprofessional (even though he constantly tells us to be professional). He even gets mad at or makes fun of people when they ask questions about things which they don't understand things!
Excellent prof: His Political rants are hysterical and he instills fear amongst the class. Shitts on kids that ask stupid questions, literally.
What can I say? The best prof I had at the U of C so far...
Notes were acceptable, but rather crowded. Did not talk while writing, caused students to become restless. Started out well with discpline, but then went overboard and unprofessional. Public humiliation in my opinion is unacceptable. Midterm was very easy.
Great prof. Understands his stuff exceptionally well. Offers a practical twist, and "makes an electronic designer out of you", as he promises at the beginning. Strict, demanding, well-organized. A professor of the old school, although he is relatively young... Will make you sweat.
Teaches embedded design, and you will become an accomplished designer at the end of his course. Very demanding, but also quite fullfiling...
He himself believes that he knows the subject well. But he only teaches common sense in his own words. Very poor quality and boring. In spite of receiving a B+ my take from the course was close to nothing.
So far so good! He explains the concepts very clearly. The toilet and Dean Martin were epic. Very strict, but if you follow his routine you can learn a lot. Never understood diodes and transistors before, he explained them amazingly well.
He is quite strict. Will call you out if you ask a stupid question, however will still answer it. His notes were pretty damn great and if you just go to lectures and pay attention you will understand the stuff well. Went into his class thinking i was going to hate him but he ended up being a great Prof who i'd totally want to have in the future too
He is a powerful and memorable professor. Perhaps disliked by the weak and undisciplined students. If you attend classes regularly, and examine carefully his lectures, you will be OK. His exams are open-book, which is nice. Listen carefully what he says in lectures, and don't be late for classes...
I submit to you that Mintchev is a real love em' or hate em' prof. The clairity of his teaching is unparalleled by any othe prof at the uni, however his strictness is also unaralleled. Dont be an idiot and you'll get along just fine with him. Overall, he is one of the better profs in ENEL
Who can forget Martin Mintchev? Since I listened to his lectures going to the washroom is never the same :-) The amplification of transistors and flushing the toilet fused into one big unforgettable picture, from which you can be kicked out if you are late or SMS around...
Prepare for the Mintchev comedy hour. A great old school prof. Demands attention and dedication in his class. You will learn the material well if you follow his notes and attend class. He will humiliate you if you ask a dumb question or even go to the bathroom during his class. Don't be late and pay attention.
"If you get 120V for your turn-on voltage in your calculations,it will hurt me personally! It means you don't understand the material I'm teaching you!" Best prof you can have. Class is too funny. "This next topic.. Is so simple, it hurts my intelligence to present it to you." (ideal diodes)
rude! not up to date!
Very good course, teaches real embedded design
Everybody talks about real design around here, only Mintchev actually teaches it. The only problem with his class is that you graduate from it really mad because you keep asking yourself, how come these very clear and straightforward design issues were not taught at all up to this class? Mintchev is a bit unyielding and uncompromizing, but great!
He burdens you to learn the stuff yourself and initially this look horrible. But then, you start understanding that it is a very efficient way not only to learn the material, but also to remember it and use it confidently by yourself.
Dr. Mintchev's easiness on marking is brought completely down to hard due to his disciplinary rules. If there is any other choice other than Dr. Mintchev take it. He normally teaches Winter and not Fall
Dr. Mintchev is an excellent professor, who cares a lot for the success of his students. He requests class discipline, and I am very comfortable with his class rules because my learning has been constantly disturbed by others in many previous and current courses that I take.
Superb course and lecturing!
Insists on focus, motivation and organization. You need to attend lectures and take thorough notes. The course can be burdening because you will be doing actual electronic design.
This class made me understand that I do not know well circuits, because of our Mickey Mouse exposure to them in the first circuits course.I had fun in it,and evaluated it very highly at the time, but when it came to the knowledge from it to be utilized in ENEL469,I was totally blank. Can only thank Mintchev's class for helping me catch up.
Firstly ill say that if you are taking this as a course requirement with no intention of a future in computer design, take the other lecture section. His lectures are very theory based and it is difficult to keep up to date with no examples!!
Superb exposure to the material and memorable lectures.
Teaches fundamentals, expects you to study problem-solving yourself. If you grasp it, you become really very good. If not, you can end up getting lower mark.
I would call his lecturing "disciplinarian comedy". Very funny, and straightforward, if you follow his rules. Can be a disaster, if you don't or decide to fight them. If you choose the former, you will learn a lot only if you work hard. Otherwise, you might just barely pass.
Needs to take a chill out. Always grumpy and what not. Good teaching assitants.
Great prof, professional, focused and organized.
I just started my internship, and can confidently say that Mintchev's class was most helpful. Plus, turned out I remembered almost everything from his lectures.
Great prof, each and everyone of his lectures is a gem.
Mintchev explained in 5 lecture hours the entire area of electronics, plus taught us how to become "immortal"... What more can a humble undergrad want? :-)
Mintchev is a classic stand-and-deliver prof with some dark humour thrown in to keep things interesting. His lectures are clear and concise and he is one of the only profs that really teaches students to be real 'Designers.' By far the most entertaining and informative lecturers in ENEL at U of C.
This class is a great exposure to real electronic design. Mintchev knows his material superbly, and presents it in a memorable way
What a great exposure to practical electronic design, combined with very well organized lecturing. I learned a lot in this course.
Very clear lectures. If you follow his rules, you will learn analog electronic design, even if you haven't had any previous exposure to it. Quite demanding, though...
Martin Mintchev is an excellent professor, who expects professional behaviour, which many high-schoolers refuse to learn. He is excellently organized, his lectures are quite focused, and most importantly, he facilitates your own learning.
Glances over each of the chapters in class with no examples and you just have to learn everything from the text book. Been a huge waist of my time going to his lectures.
Makes you study hard so that YOU learn the material. This can be tiresome, but if you pass his course you feel good about yourself.
He's a great lecturer. Teaching-wise, I guess he's just got a little busy this year. Keep in mind he is a bright scholar and carries high pride. Try to offend him personally, I guess you'll have to take it again next year. I was born in a strict Russian family so I understand this well. Respect comes first, business(teaching) comes second.
"Stand tall in front of cheaters" to protect the hard work of the rest of us. -He have all my respect. TAs are very helpful too. Do your work, you'll feel accomplished. He did his job well. Con is sometime his handwriting is hard to read.
Mintchev will make you work for passing, you will never forget his class.
He does what real managers in the industry do: gives you design tasks and evaluates how did you do. If you don't learn yourself fast, tough luck.
Minttchev's teaching is probably the closest to what real industry would assign you with tasks for. It's very realistic in 3 ways: 1. Here's what needs to be done. 2. Very little to no support 3. Do your work or you are fired. Good experience with him? No. It's what you will be doing the rest of your life that's for sure, appreciate the tough love.
You will be very wrong to expect babysitting help from him. He na his TAs will consult you similarly to what would happen in the industry. If you haven't learned how to study by yourself, you will be scared to death.
Sarcastically hilarious, while staying professional. Don't try to be silly, attend lectures all the time, and be nice.
If you dont attend lectures, you can cry as much as you want to no avail. If you do, he is quite predictable.
Lectures are fairly clear, but he doesn't post notes, so make sure to attend every lecture. Super strict; takes no crap from his students and won't hesitate to kick you out of his class if he feels you aren't being "professional." Tests can be brutal, but also seem to be graded easy. Sometimes takes questions straight from the textbook.
If you study a lot, this course is passable. There's not much material to study from. Assignment and his examples just covers a brief level of stuffs like grade 1 math. The final however is like quantum science ph-double-d exam.
Work hard and you will learn a lot from this course.
10 for skills, 0 for conscience Loved his lecture and everything. I absolutely admire him as a professional. Also thanks to him, I'm one course away from finishing my degree. He took my final exam paper away because I had an empty "uncovered drink" red bull can where I put it on the floor. Thank you Dr. Mintchev my life is a train wreck now.
Very unclear. I used the textbook entirely for this course.
Best lecturer ever.
Mixed feelings. Gives great lectures, focus is on full system design, and is very applicable. This class is a must if you want to go into circuit design as a career. Gives tons of homework, wastes student's time by forcing us to manually sample a handdrawn waveform 250 times, twice. Unclear instructions. Easy open book tests, but marks difficult.
Great Prof. Organized and focused. He makes you learn a lot.
Worst "professor" ever. Rude and disrespectful.
Superb lecturer. Always professional and very demanding.
If you want to learn real electronic design, he is tha man!
Great prof.!
Mintchev is very demanding but you end up learning a lot in his course. He promises to make a real electronic designer out of you, and he delivers.
Will never fail you, but will make you work hard
Excellent prof who really wants his students learn deep. He is respectful, well organised, and well disciplined. Excellent teaching style. His lectures are inspiring, focused on practical application of electronics. Resourceful course content delivered by a resourceful expert prof. I really feel fortunate taking this course with Dr. Martin.
569 Mintchev > 469 Mintchev, but they're both pretty good. The 569 version jokes around more, understandably as 3rd year students haven't really been through the ringer yet and the 569 students at least indicate they're somewhat interested in his class by taking it in the first place. A funny guy, great prof, but needless to say strict.
He never lets anything unexplained.
just drop this course and take another instructor 's u cant pass
His teaching style is great
if u see the material and assignment another professer given student dou will blame him without any reason.
Great teacher
Ignore the dropouts, Mintchev is a good prof.
He will scare you to do homework, but his marking is generous and he explains things thoroughly. Do not skip lectures, tutorials and labs.
Russian teaching style; Great yet rigorous; Will teach you how to do things in real life. Extremely predictable, you know what you are going to encounter on the exams two weeks ahead. Don't skip a class! He is tough, so don't take his class if you just want to graduate. But for those people want to learn, take 469 and 569. Hardworking pays here.
Great lecturer. Class teaches real design, so he demands care and attention.
Don't take his course
Dr. Mintchev is a great and inspirational prof. Teaches real electronic design, and demands lots of care and attention.
Literal cancer 10/10 meme value
He is an average teacher. However he is extremely harsh, doesn't allow students to eat food, wear hats, go to the washroom or talk during lectures. Will call you out for asking a 'stupid question'. Loves to use intimidation tactics against his class. I'm an above 3.0 student, however I failed this class and it caused me lots of stress.
Mintchev is a great, organized and strict professor. He teaches real design, which is the core of electrical engineering.
Total fun and complete blast
