The class was a good challenge, and the tests were fair. Its possible to get an A in the class, but you have to earn it. His lectures are clear and to the point, but his voice is monotone so it may be hard to keep concentration. The lectures can be borring, but i suggest attending every lecture as they are very informative.
Mr. Nakashima was a very hard grader!!! very challenging class.. if you fail two midterms, you fail the class. so he does not care about the students.
This man obviously knows his material but is awful in teaching it. He grading makes it hard to pass the class. Your grade is based of three tests and nothing else. He does not care that 90 percent of his students drop or withdraw the class.
Probably knows his stuff. That having been said, a chimp could teach this class better than him. If you fail 2 tests, the final doesn't matter cuz you fail the class. I got a 48 on the first exam, a 90 on the second, and another 48. Technically a C by his scale but oh no. He told me don't bother coming to the final because I have already failed.
He doesn't announce quizzes and his exams require little calculations. Exams are mostly about explaining theories in long paragraphs. He is the strictest grader I've ever had. I was deducted 3 points on an exam because I used the word "it".Homework is easy but does not prepare you for the exams. Lectures are boring and confusing. DO NOT TAKE!
Very tough teacher grader! 5 zeros on testhomeworkquizzes result in a fail of the class. I DO NOT recommend taking this class
Has little patience for his students. Gives little time for quizzes. Bad attitude
I felt completely at a loss. The whole experience was distressing and depressing as I struggled all quarter to no avail to keep at this professor's pace and concept heavy tests. I failed the two tests given before the final and felt equally under prepared for all 3 tests despite attending lectures and completing the homework.
I like math. The professor explained everything very clearly and gave very helpful ways to think to solve various types of problems. The homework and lectures are very helpful.
Do NOT take this professor!!! He does not explain very clearly during his lectures and during the hw you're all by yourself. He asks the class if you get it and doesn't wait for a response and continues very quickly to the next topic. He has quizzes almost everyday. Avoid him at all costs!
If you do not enjoy learning math on a fundamental level with an emphasis in concepts, I do NOT recommend taking his class. . He is super accessible and extremely helpful during office hours. He has PhD in mathematical physics, a masters in physics, and bachelors in math and theo. physics (don't underestimate him). Take him if you like challenges.
Looking back on the class, the concepts weren't that hard. But the course itself was one of the most stressful I have taken. There is going to be a quiz every class. The teacher can seem very cold and judgmental. And the homework is a constant bombardment. But take my opinion with a grain of salt, for some reason Math Majors get a kick out the pain
He is very rude and condescending. Hardest class ever. If you come into the class not knowing math, you will fail. Fail two tests out of three, youre out of luck, because will get a guaranteed F for the class as your final grade.
Strictest Grader ever. If you fail two out of three exams, youre screwed. You will get a guaranteed F as your final grade.
This is my second year taking this professor (had him for Calc3), and just like last time I was pushed to my limits. If you wish to learn the fundamentals VERY well, then take this class. If you're not a math/physics major and just want an EZ grade, don't take this class. This professor is meant only for students that really enjoy understanding.
He is blatantly disrespectful and rude. Thats one reasons you need to avoid him at all costs. Hes a stingy because he loves to fail everyone. He even threatened to sue his past students (that failed two tests and got an F) for slander and loss of income and claimed that he will always win and students will lose crying after court.
Extremely difficult. You will be pushed to your very limit with this prof. Ask only very specific questions or he'll disrespect you and not answer you question. Homework was every night. Take extremely diligent notes and READ BEFORE his class so you can ask questions during lecture. Write down homework so you can review it later.
Dont take Nakashima. Hes way too strict and mean. There are 3 Midterms, and 1 final exam. If you blow 2 midterms, youre out of luck:(( Besides he doesnt return anything back until after the 3rd exam. U will make same mistakes on HW, Exams, etc. By then itll be too late to recover ur grade. Then hell automatically fail you.
Dont take Nakashima please, because he gets annoyed if you ask for help. If need any help, dont bother asking him. He will just get frustrated with you.
Prof. Martin Nakashima forced his students to sign his self written shut up to dean waiver(that he denies ever doing this when so many students ask him about that) or that there will be a (surprise, surprise) hold on ur account that prevents next term add/drop classes/u will get reported to Office of Student Conduct to get kicked out/expelled
Nakashima forced ppl to sign his self written waiver or he report you to Office of Student Conduct/fabricates an accusation (ie fabricated plagiarism allegation or falsely say I got into a dishonesty scheme I fabricated teaching style. I am actually telling the truth!) to get me expel from all worldwide colleges. U cant disprove/appeal accusation.
You have to sign a hush waiver (he denies doing) or he reports u and u get Office of Student Conduct Hold. Once he reports u for a fabricated copyright infringement act, THATS IT UR GUILTY u get expelled. You cant disprove/appeal allegation. For example Denying plagarism/copyright infringement/claiming fair use is no defense at CPP.
Not good.
To start off, he is very rude. When there were students trying to get help in his office hours, not only did he not help, he shoos his students (every one of them including ME!) away with his hand rudely, then gets belligerent and rudely/angrily shouts like GOODBYE, BYE BYE, BYE multiple times. Fail 2 tests its Dont come back GOODBYE FOREVER
Please believe me when I say this, dont take this professor. Hes picky with grading on exams. He gives no partial credit at all. If there were any calculations, he gives no partial credit at all even if the work is correct until the final answers wrong. He gives 0 points for the problem for sig figs off by only 0.001. He doesnt allow calculators
I just dont recommend Nakashima. Period.
This Professor has no patience with students, bad attitude, made content way harder than what it needs to be.
The only thing I ever learned from Dr. Nakashima is that I do not want to be a Civil Engineer. Period.
The only thing I ever learned from Dr. Nakashima is that I do not want to be a Civil Engineer
Hardest class ever. If you come into the class not knowing math, you will fail.
Awful.
Hardest class ever... If you come to class not knowing math, you will fail.
Prof Martin Nakashima has anger issues. If students have the audacity to ask help on what they dont understand, even if its very specific math related questions, he belittles someone for 30 minutes and never helps students ever. His definition of helping students is berating students by telling them they cant/will never be able to succeed life.
Worst professor in the entire universe
Seriously the worst professor to teach at CPP
Experience with Nakashima was a complete and total fiasco.
Experience was a complete trainwreck.
The worst of the worst professor to ever exist.
Worst professor it was beyond description. So awful it is beyond my capability of providing an answer of my opinion about this Professor
Worst professor ever.
Absolutely NOT!!
The way Nakashima grades things with his fail two tests you fail the class policy is just ridiculous. The tests, final, quizzes, homework, are beyond ridiculous/Not Doable AT ALL. He gives way too much tedious homework. Quizzes/tests/final is only doing watered down heavy proofs aimlessly yet still getting points deducted just for using word it
Nakashimas you fail two exams you fail policy is the most ridiculous excuse for failing too many or even all the students. If thats what his excuse is for failing too many students, he might as well just say my dog ate my students homeworks or my dog ate my gradebook as a ludicrous excuse for failing too many or even all the students. Avoid please
Do NOT take Nakashima. He fails student if you get below a 50 on 2 exams/2 quizzes/2 homeworks/the final. He asks for proofs on every assignment/exams. He constantly loses students works (ie homework/quiz/exams/final)/blames students for losing students works by giving automatic 0 (an F) for each students work he lost.
Do NOT waste ur whole semesters worth of time with him. If you do, it is pretty much certain that you can work as hard as you can/put in your maximum effort for this class and still get an F (get a 59% as ur overall grade AT BEST) while you end up learning nothing (if you do learn anything from him, youll end up learning next to nothing AT BEST).
Since time is money, time is precious as a student, PLEASE DO NOT waste your time by taking Nakashima. It is 100% certain that youll work your hardest/smartest and still get an F (59% AT BEST) while learning nothing (Youll end up learning next to nothing AT BEST)! So Please Do NOT waste your whole semesters worth of time with Nakashima.
Taking Nakashima was a big fat mistake and I really regret it do so. So much semesters worth of time and money were all wasted. Future students, please do not repeat the same mistake by taking Nakashima, or youll be sorry. You can work your hardest and still get an F (59% AT BEST)and you will learn nothing (Youll learn next to nothing AT BEST)!!
Worst Professor I ever had. He is so awful, it is beyond my ability to provide an answer of my opinion about Nakashima.
My only regret that I have is taking Martin Nakashima. If I knew beforehand prior to attending first lecture, I would drop his class. So much of my time and money were wasted BIG TIME. Nakashima sucks BIG TIME!!
This Professor has no patience, bad attitude, made class way too hard. Avoid.
Terrible. Falsely accuses random people of cheating. If students actually tell the truth about not cheating, he becomes very cynical towards you. Also dont bother asking him for help. He will just give you a condescending look and glare at you before he gets pretty angry at you.
Avoid Nakashima, especially if you are a first year student straight out of high school (transition from high school to college is hard enough already). Simply that. First day of Fall Semester he said that he loves to fail every single student if nobody is able to pass two exams and the final. Basically he will not hesitate to fail all students.
Avoid Nakashima. His motto for his military like no nonsense teaching style is that he intentionally makes class hard to build pressure on students, because he wants to test us students how well we can work under an extreme pressure without making a single mistake. Time is Money. U will be spending your whole semester on Nakashimas class 24/7.
Do NOT take this professor please!! Simply that!!
Im not being emotional in any way at all. Im not writing this comment because Im angry in any way at all. Im writing this comment because I am telling you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help us CPPBroncos. The truth is Nakashima is the worst professor. He fails too many ppl. Dont take him, simply that!
Like what others say, dont take him.
I had a friend of mine that hook him for MAT1150. I like to say to students trying to register for future classes, please do not take Nakashima. If you do so then you are too young/too old, too simple, and sometimes naïve!!
Dont take him or you will be sorry. Simply that.
Assigned Online HW after the finals of previous term b4 1st day of coming term (summer HW if Fall, Winter HW if before Spring) with 100 questions all or nothinh (each new HW is assigned Sunday thru Saturday. Assigned Monday due same Monday at 11:59pm, same for Tuesday, etc). Online HW (summer/winter) too after term is up due b4 1st day of next term
UR in for a ride. 4 units already hard enuff. His class is like 12 units not 4. Gives HW Sun-Sat before during after the end of term due same night. He gives the 1st half of the 1st midterm on 1st day of class unannounced its insane hard not related to b4 term HW he wont tell you what on it also part of a grade. Fail 5 HW he tells u drop the class.
The work load for Nakashima is just ridiculous and insane. 4 units of a math class, especially calculus is hard enough already. Nakashimas math class is more like 12 units for just that class instead of 4 units . Its treated like a full time job. Not to mention, there is around 66% to 90ish% or even 100% fail rate if unluckier. Bad Bad Bad!!
If I could rate 0/5 or negative stars, I should definitly do that because he honestly deserves a rating of 0/5 or negative stars, because 1/5 is too high. I cant because 1/5 is lowest I could give. He is rude and unhelpful. He gives no partial credit on exams, HW, quizzes. Its an automatic F (zippity doo dah or 0) as your grade if you fail 2 exams.
Taking Nakashima was biggest mistake I made, because my biggest regret for the rest of my life is taking Nakashima. Please do not take Nakashima or you will regret if for the rest of your life. I've wasted my time and money working my tail off, but still got an F after failing 2 tests. He got angry/belligerently rude/shouts at me when ask for help
Honestly, taking Nakashima was quite a fatal mistake to say the least. Please do NOT take Nakashima or you will be sorry for the rest of your life.
Taking Nakashima was SUCH a fatal mistake to which I will never recover from for the rest of my life. Now its the point of no return for recovery in my natural born life. Please do NOT take Nakashima or you will regret it for the rest of your life.
Honestly, taking Nakashima is a big NO NO!! Please do yourselves a favor if you want to respect your GPA!!
Please do NOT take this professor. This professor has no patience, has favorites, bad attitude. Calculus 3 MAT2140 traditionally has a high fail rate including here at CPP, but Nakashimas fail rate is even higher (fail rate 70%+ or even 100%). This Mr. Type A personality only cares about his paycheck and accumulating wealth.
Do NOT take Nakashima for MAT2140 He is the worst professor I ever had. If you get below a 50 on 2 midterms or get 5 zeros on homework and quizzes combined you automatically fail the class with an F grade. Since I got below 50 on 2 midterms, its already impossible at this point (as of 4/30/2020) to pass the class as I am automatically getting an F
I took MAT1150 with Nakashima in Fall 2018. Hes the worst professor ever!! If you get below a 50 on 2 midterms or get 5 zeros on homework and quiz combined you automatically fail the class. Exams are difficult and he gives no partial credit. He is perfectionism and expects perfectionism. I got below 50 on 2 midterms so I got an automatic F grade.
Just please do not take Nakashima for MAT2140. Simply that.
Unhelpful. When students ask for help in office hours or in class he will only and always put both his hands up in the air and say Not My Problem. He only shows up and he only cares about his paycheck. I learned nothing because of him despite working my tail off, I still failed 2 midterms and got an F.
I INSIST anyone enrolled MAT2140 with Nakashima Fall 2020, DROP THAT CLASS NOW! If not, FORGET IT! Even if everyone elses HW is perfectly right on all problems (work/answer), just 1 student has 1 problem wrong on HW (work & or answer), he gives every students HW turned in that day an F (by giving every students HW a 0%). SMH AT MARTIN NAKASHIMA!
Dont take Nakashima! Even if everyone elses HW is perfectly right on all problems (work/answer), just 1 student has 1 problem wrong on HW (work & or answer), he gives every students HW turned in that day an F (by giving every students HW a 0 and not giving any points for that homework for any students). Smh at Martin Nakashima!!
Terrible. If you are currently enrolled in Nakashima for Fall 2020 and are reading this comment, I insist DROP THAT CLASS IMMEDIATELY (or at least ASAP) . If you havent enrolled, but are trying to enroll in Nakashima for MAT2140 in Fall 2020, FORGET IT!! I BEG YOU take this comment seriously or you will be sorry.
However, I got an A-, Professor Nakashima was one of the worst instructors That I have taken in my life. He tasks math very seriously like its an important life subject, without knowing that many students need this class to just meet the major requirements. He gives from 5-8 HW every week on MML with no extensions. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Professor Martin Nakashima prior to SARS-CoV-2 (aka Wuhan Coronavirus or CCP Virus) quarantine, bad. After going into quarantine in March 2020 (transition to and conducting online class), even worse.
Professor Martin Nakashima prior to SARS-CoV-2 (aka Wuhan Coronavirus or CCP Virus) quarantine, bad enough already as an instructor and extremely difficult (difficult enough already). After going into quarantine in March 2020 (transition to and conducting online class), even worse.
One of the most anti-American professor. Last day of his Fall 2019 (most students failed 2 exams and got Fs) he ranted angrily (people in hallway overhead), falsely claiming Americans, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Hong Hong (protestor supporter) students are the most spoiled and unteachable student. He acts like a Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece!!
To Fall 2020 Incoming Freshmen: Please do yourselves a favor and do NOT enroll with him during your summer orientation in July for MAT2140 straight out of high school! Transition to high school to college esp. in pandemic will be hard enough already! Nakashimas will make your transition to college even worse and more miserable! Im warning you!
Attention Fall 2020 incoming freshmen: Nakashima will make your transition from high school to college even worse and bumpier! You will be miserable everyday if you take him! You will regret it if you do not read RMP and take this comment seriously when registering in orientation! Do NOT take this professor you will be sorry!! Im warning you now!!
Attention Fall 2020 incoming freshmen: Nakashima will make your transition from high school to college even worse and bumpier! You will be miserable everyday and you will regret it if you dont read RMP and take this comment seriously when registering in orientation! Please Do NOT take this professor or you will be sorry!! Im warning you now!!
Attention Fall 2020 incoming freshmen: If you think you can coast through MAT2140 with Nakashima straight out of high school and pass easily, you are sorely mistaken!! During orientation, keep in mind Nakashima as a choice of professor is a NO GO!! I repeat, Nakashima as a choice of professor is a NO NO!! Im warning you right now!!
Worst professors I have taken. He does not respect students, and he thinks he knows everything and at the same time, he makes a lot of mistakes. He takes math very seriously which I think it' not that important to be make it hard for students, and for that he gives 5-7 homeworK a week and each Howmwork contains 10-30 questions. NOT RECOMMENDED
Martin Nakashima for MAT2140? No thanks!!!!!!!
Will interrupt lecture with a diatribe, if using a phone. Topics stated to not be on the exam will be on the exam. Extremely small room for errorlest you fail. Minute errors result in a massive dock of points. A perfectionist that expects perfection out of his students. Take this prof. if you have already mastered calculus and physics.
His class is just busywork that gets you nowhere. If you do all the grunt work, his tests/quiz are too hard and he grades too hard like hes expecting perfectionism. I did all the hard homework and worked my tail off with my maximum effort, but I was going nowhere in this class when I got an F since I blew 2 midterms.
You can work as hard as you can, but still end up going nowhere. The moment its certain that you will go nowhere is when you fail two out of three midterms that results in an automatic F as your final grade. You can do all the homework and study your best, but you will still be unprepared for tests which tells you that you will be going nowhere.
Nakashima makes you feel like you will go nowhere in life, which will injure your ego and self confidence. He tells you if you fail two midterms, he tells you dont back to class and tells you that youll go nowhere at all in life.
With Nakashima, you CANNOT make a single mistake on anything or else you will fail the class and he will tell you that you will be going nowhere in life and you already reached the point of no return in redeem yourself.
The worst possible teacher to get for Calculus. If at all possible, find any other section.
The most ridiculous possible professor for any calculus class such as MAT2140 Calculus 3. Avoid Nakashima at all costs!!
TERRIBLE. PLEASE RUN AWAY FROM PROFESSOR NAKASHIMA AT ALL COSTS. i have always gotten As in math and in calculus 1 and 2. I am failing this class right now. assigns insane amount of homework, tests are extremely hard. during virtual learning he does not provide lectures or office hours. even if you're good at math, you will struggle in his class
Stay far away from Professor Martin Nakashima!! His class has a high fail rate!!
Martin Nakashima is the worst professor I had. His motto for intentionally making class hard such as hard exams, gives insane HW, grade tough, loves to have a high fail rate is to "Intentionally build pressure because Im testing you guys how well you can work under pressure". That "motto" sounds like he enjoys torturing students mentally!!
If its one thing worse than this whole online classes only situation via Zoom due to the pandemic is taking Nakashima for Calculus 3 MAT2140, especially online. Ill tell you why. Nakashima will murder you during exam weeks. He is notorious for giving insanely hard exams and grading harsh on them. Oh and lots of HW too. His class alone is torture.
If its one thing worse than this whole online classes only situation via Zoom due to the pandemic is taking Nakashima for Calculus 3 MAT2140, especially online. Ill tell you why. Nakashima will zap you during exam weeks. He is notorious for giving insanely hard exams and grading harsh on them. Oh and lots of HW too.
If its one thing worse than a deadly COVID-19 pandemic is taking Nakashima for Calculus 3. He has a high fail rate. Period.
The one thing worse than COVID-19 is taking Nakashima for Calc 3. Simply that.
Dont take Nakashima. Lets say you get a 48 on the 1st exam, a 90 on the 2nd, and another 48. Its technically a C by his scale but oh no. Hell say "Because you have failed two exams with both scores below a 50 I must tell you that it would be an impossibility at this point for you to pass this class, so dont bother taking the final." Avoid.
Nakashimas 2 exam fail policy and his high fail rate is a major reason why you will not win the battle against Nakashima if you enroll in him. You dont feed him power by enrolling in his sections as itll give him more power to hurt more peoples mental health. If you want a challenge take Nakashima at your own risk, but you WILL NOT win.
I was you. I was thinking, "A lot of people struggled, but there's some good reviews, maybe it'll be different for me." No. He is the worst professor I've yet had. Expects students to do the absolute most while he puts in the least effort to teach anything. Also is very unorganized. Taking this class with this professor is a mistake.
Martin Nakashima needs to cut some slacks for students during this COVID times. He needs to learn how to give students second chances, have patience with students, and help students when they ask for it. He is more harsh during COVID than in person (in person was harsh enough already). I just wish he would cut some slacks for students honestly.
I would not put up with Nakashimaism. Nakashimaism alone makes it very easy for the vast majority to fail this hard Calc 3 class
Do NOT take Nakashima PLEASE!! He will make you feel betrayed!! Failing his class due to the two exam fail policy and heavy workload is the reason why Martin Nakashima will make students feel betrayed. Professor Martin Nakashima is one of those people that will make you feel betrayed by Cal Poly Pomona. He made me feel betrayed when I failed.
Every semester there are people who say to avoid Martin Nakashima and they have a valid point. He is blatantly disrespectful and creepy to students. One thing that is annoying is he vents his frustration by insulting/chastised struggling students in front of the whole class. He is cocky and prides himself of failing as many students as possible
Tests and quizzes were very complicated compared to the homework. Throwing students a long complicated pdf of the lesson then not being helpful to students through emails is not teaching. Also accusing students of cheating when they had a tech issue lagging their exam time was extremely outrageous.
Had him back in 2017 and it's sad to see that he's still teaching at this university. Took him for calc I my freshman year and he called my class stupid since we all made the same mistake on a quiz. Retook calc I with a different professor and got the highest grade (A+) in my class, so clearly he was the issue. Abhorrent man and needs to be fired.
Teaches like you already know the subject and it is just a refresher course when really you have no idea what is going on. Made the final 50% of your grade. Overall just not a good teacher. Honestly I feel like he is still allowed to teach because he fails so many students and makes you have to retake and pay for another class again. Stay away.
This professor is not for the faint-hearted nor for first time freshmen straight out of high school because you will most likely fail . Only the fittest can pass his class.
During Zoom days in 2020, he watches every move requires camera and mic on at all times and required Respondus or some other proctoring software during exams.
Creepy. Did not have a good time with him at all
Basura.
Pppppppfffffffffffffffffffff!!!
I hate him.
This guy is an A$$! And that's the nicest thing I can say about Martin Nakashima. Hard HW tough grader. Fail two midterms you fail. First day of class he walks in without saying a word & writes math problems own board. Nakashima made me want to Kiss College Goodbye.
110% aka 1000 times HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE him!!!!! He is one of the many reasons why he made some of my friends want to KHS
