Ugh... This class was painful to get up at 7 in the morning for. He teaching style is ineffective and conveys minimal information during lectures. He relies solely on us to learn form the assigned textbook and to complete quizzes on material he has not taught us.

Made supposedly the hardest 2nd year math course very easy. Good use of examples, assignments are short, fair, and to the point. Midterm and quizzes were consistent, if not easier, than the already easy assignments. Could be better at being clear, but does okay. He often confuses himself!
Makes a lot of mistakes, which shows that he doesn't prepare his notes. Went to his office hour once and caught him sleeping, and he wasn't helpful at all (scoffed at me when I asked him a simple question). Other than that, he's a below average prof.
Makes a conceptually difficult class very easy to understand. Teaches by example to make assignments and tests easier. Notes are good references when studying.
Explains really clear. Notes and lectures are good, they're useful for exams and assignments.
I thought he was the best professor ever. I heard that 239 is really hard and stuff so I was afraid. But his notes are close to perfection and he explains with great clarity
I had him for MATH 235. I found his notes concise and easy to follow, and he has no accent so he is easy to understand. He was quite willing to help and tried to when ever possible. Occasionally he would slip up, but he always corrected at the next lecture. His contributions to the midterms were difficult questions though...
Very nice and helpful instructor. His notes are really concise and easy to understand when studying for exams.
he's a funny guy. no accent, typical nerdy math guy. his writing is a little on the messy side, but hes usually very clear on things. hes understanding and is always approachable. the course isnt too hard, you can do well if you keep up with the assignments. the textbook is VERY useful.
He is a nice person
Very nice guy. He's kind of awkward but he's well aware of this LOL. I found his writing very neat and his notes and explanations crystal clear. Would definitely have him again as a professor.
GREAT PROF!!
Had him for 135 as well. Great notes, random silly jokes. Always avail for office hours. However.. the assignments were challenging, and the midterm was brutal ( he made the majority of the questions). The final was very fair though. Graph theory was taught very well, interesting course :) Also had a really awesome TA (David Qian).
All around great guy
Awesome prof. Funny guy and very entertaining classes. Gave murderously difficult assignments, midterm and final exams though.
What an amazing guy. He made a course which I had absolutely no interest in fun. He was always available for help. Definitely recommend taking MATH239 with Martin if you can.
Awesome prof! Would always be available to walk you through anything during office hours. Would DEFINITELY recommend.
I didn't need the textbook (and I never bought it) for this course because his notes were that good! He always supplemented concepts with examples and he is really a nice guy. Really entertaining lectures.
Awesome prof...made supposedly the hardest course look easy.
Great professor. Explains the concepts well, has well structured lessons and assignments. Very nice and funny too. I've had him for Math 115 and 135.
Awesome prof. Assignments are very challenging but Midterm and Finals are very doable. Makes tonnes of jokes and puns in class and on the assignments/tests. Always available for help too, answers emails quickly.
He's amazing!
Math 239 is considered to be the hardest math course in second year. Assignments, midterm and Final was excruciatingly difficult. Martin is a good Prof, but his notes were not very helpful. Hope he improves his notes, had to borrow other Prof's notes from friends.
The course content can be difficult, but Martin makes it easy to understand. He is also always willing to help students if they are struggling. Midterm was fair, and so were assignments (though some were hard). Final was hard, but I'm pretty sure they belled the final grades. Overall a great prof, makes one of the harder core math courses easy.
He's a great prof. His assignments are pretty difficult but the exams are very fair. Makes tonnes of nerdy jokes, he's a really great guy. Attend all his lectures
Excellent teacher and makes tough concepts very simple.
Best prof i've had so far, 1B civil student :D
Course content and assignments overly complicated
Clear explanations and good notes, entertaining, helpful, great prof overall.
martin is a terrific prof, great lectures, slightly difficult assignments however
GREAT notes. Trust me, his notes are awesome. Sometimes, I'd zone out of class and just focus on copying down what he wrote on the board. Then I'd go home and read it - it still made perfect sense to me. Course notes are useless lol
Pei's to go to class
Just write this before the final exam, he is an amazing prof
Although lectures were very clear, his assignments were really tough. His attitude during his office hours were very different from his lectures. Just felt like he didn't want to help. Wouldn't recommend.
His assignments will murder your soul, devour your sleeps and leave a machine of you behind.
Spent too long cracking jokes and too little time teaching the content. not very good at structuring jus lectures or explaining things.
mad funny
Martin is unclear in his explanations, and makes poor jokes in class. Does not take the time to enphasize on the important points of the proof, and assumes you have read the chapter before attending his lectures.
Outstanding lectures. Clear voice, handwriting, and explanations. Seems very friendly too.
Funny, great at explaining, very organized, knows the course, can answer questions very well and saves you on assignments. But the assignments and exams are hard if you don't know the material well.
His lecture notes are AWESOME! Even better than the course notes. Lectures are fun.
He has really good and organized notes. Content is interesting.
Hard course but great prof.
Really organized notes and clear explanations. Made this hard course easy.
Martin is a wonderful professor who almost lives to help his students (even ones who aren't his students). His lectures are clear and concise as well as anything buy boring, and to top it off when he isn't teaching he is almost always available to go over any material.
Great prof. He makes a hard course easy and full of happiness.
Lectures are clear and helpful. He makes the occasional awkward joke. Exams are fair but hard.
Honestly, one of my favourite profs. Sure I didn't get a high mark but that's because the course material is dense and hard. But pei actually makes this boring course pretty fun and interesting. He's a great guy with some funny nerdy jokes. With this said, you still have to study hard since his exam is hard but very fair.
Gives off an awkward and nerdy vibe which just lends to his charm. He's pretty monotone, but he's a solid prof overall for a difficult course.
I had the pleasure of being taught by Pei for MATH 239 and MATH 135. He is one of the reasons I was able to obtain an 80+ for both these courses. His lectures are engaging. I liked how he writes notes on the chalkboard so it made lectures seem more mandatory. He is very clear and explains concepts in the most simple way possible to understand them.
Hilarious Prof, he's great at teaching too. Classes were very structured, most things are written on the board but when they aren't he posts the slides. Good use of technology for handing in and grading weekly assignments. Our class rated him 4.99/5 for the University Ratings.
Very good prof. Really knows the content of the course and he enjoys teaching the students. His assignments take forever to finish though.
Best prof you can get for a difficult course like ECE 103. Office hours are amazing, he tries to help you and sometimes goes hours beyond his normal office hours. He is also quite funny and would throw jokes and puns out of nowhere in the middle of class. The notes he gives is very organized and descriptive. Overall, I really enjoyed this course.
amazing bad prof
Martin is a great prof. His notes are organized, gives plenty of examples, and also is funny through a lot of references (Phoenix Wright, Mario, Portal, etc.). He is a very approachable guy and a good teacher.
Probably the worst professor for CO 342, does not teach, reads off the slides/notes and reproves the statements with the same. Does not provide intuition for what we're learning or any asides. Makes poor jokes as an attempt to make the class interesting. Don't take it.
One of the best profs at UW. Funny (a little awkward but endearing) in lecture. Gives some examples to see the intuition. Writes everything he says down, and is very clear. Explains where he's going with a proof before he writes it down. Exams require that you memorize proofs, but are fair. Friendly.
Martin is really a good prof. He has clear logic and explanation to the theorems of this course.
Awesome prof. Sadly he won't teach ECE103 anymore.
Awesome lectures and everything is organized and explain everything in great detail. Sadly he don't teach MATH 136
Martin is the very best teacher I met at UW. He reminds me of my math teacher in high school. He is so kind, so patient, so clear at giving lectures. He explains definitions using concrete examples and writes neatly on the board. I genuinely wish I could have more classes with him. I miss him so much. He is a teacher, a friend, and an inspiration.
It is enjoyable to sit in his lectures. He gives really clear and intuitive explanations. His lectures and assignments are well prepared. Definitely recommend!
He was very organized with his notes and was always available during office hours for help. I was surprised to find out that he was teaching math 137 for the first time for my class because his explanations were so clear. He's also really funny in class w/o straying away from the course content. Definitely recommend for any class
I love the lectures, lectures are organized and clear. BUT the tests are hard and I think for this course, it is very memorization heavy. Lots of notation, and all are very similar. Tons of algorithms to memorize as well. Overall the professor is super nice and very accessible.
Martin seems a little shy at first but after a while you learn he's a great prof. Teaches material the way you should be thinking about it and provides very clear explanations (especially with his colourful pens haha). Pretty funny guy too
Really well-organized lecture videos. Explained concepts clearly. Well-prepared assignment questions. Some of the exam questions are tough.
Over my 4 years at UW, Martin Pei stands out as one of the best profs I've had. Very clear lecture notes, great dry/depressing humour, and very accessible and friendly during office hours. MATH 239 was a somewhat difficult course, but his teaching made it much easier to get through.
hardest grading ever: give 90% for a correct solution, give 100% only for an OUTSTANDING solution (It is possible to meet good TA give normal 100%), so I give a 5 difficulty (Note: check course outline before you take his course, looks like only apply to co342). but lectures are amazing, youtuber and very clear.
He's a great teacher

You can not use any proof from class if you do so, then you get not credit on test.
very very very tough grader, lots lots lots of homework, expects us to put tons of time on homework and so many questions per assignment but each assignment only worth 2%. Also nothing taught can be used on the quiz/exam. "cannot use proofs taught in class or solutions for assignment", that is what stated on the quiz. doesn't make sense.
Since there is no negative scores
He was expecting a 60-70 average while the class got 50-60. When students go and ask for advice, he did not give methods on how to improve, but on asking whether we were working hard enough. We got pretty good marks 80-90 on assignments that makes us think that we know and understand the content but the test is so lengthy and hard.
Since there is no zero for him!!!!!!!
lots lots homework but only worth little percentage in the scheme. NOT FAIR!!!!! And cannot use results from class on tests, DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!!!!!!!!!
Nice lectures, can help students understand what they need to know if they are really into that subject. Provides wide ranged knowledge about the subject. His course is a must have if you want to continue on that subject. With that being said, if you are only looking for a pass or is not interested in the course, getting grades is difficult.
His tests and assignments are getting more and more difficult, and he really enjoys seeing those low averages. Teaches well but the experience with him was awful, had to spend more than 10 hours each week on his assignment, and some questions involves concept that he did not teach. Please take Co 372 if you can.
He likes to make quizzes and assignments rather extremely difficult. He can not teach application. Has limited avaibility to help students outside of class and TAs are not responsive. Students are not doing well and feel stressed and demotivated. I would avoid this course and especially this professor in all future classes he may teach.
This prof sucks, make the assign extremely hard on purpose, what a mean person, never and ever take his course
Took Martin's CO370 in Winter 2024. Great lecturer. His lecture notes are clear and easy to follow. Although you can learn the content by just reading his notes, I highly recommend attending his lectures, as they were insightful and among the most enjoyable I've experienced, and he gave bonus questions based on facts mentioned in lectures in exams.
He's an amazing professor and if I had him for every class I might have learnt much more and maybe even be inspired to be a professor myself.
