He makes class fun, but you have to really work and study. He'll help you with test essay questions, papers, and just about anything though!!!! He usually returns graded tests, etc. the very next day. Take his class unless you have no time to study.

very interesting and easy to listen to. Tests are easy if you study for them. I took this class during the interim. He requires a paper or two and extra readings but overall he is very interesting and easy if you go to class. He made history fun!!

AWESOME prof! Martin Quirk reminded me why I'm a history major. The essays are challenging, if you take good notes, tests should be a breeze. You can't take bad notes w/him ("come down 2 lines, give me a heading: Election of 1828", I mean, c'mon?) and he's extremely clear & helpful. Take this prof!!

GREAT. Memorize your notes, and you'll be set to go for quizzes and tests. He likes to give extra credit if there's a good reason. He's funny, helpful, and loves to talk to students. One of the most approachable teachers.

Loved this guy. Somewhat difficult but he makes it so you almost enjoy the challenge. Learn your notes he tells you what will be on the tests, but come ready to write. I wrote right up until he told me to stop. Best professor i've had at RVC.

A very nice guy who will tell you exactly what to do in order to get an A in his class, but a sixteen page paper with atleast twenty sources due by the end of the semester is not worth it, especially if you hate writing essays.

Best Hst proff @ RVC because he loves the subj and has such a great time teaching it. He is a dork and he knows it...that is what make him so much fun. Definately a challenge, but you will learn so so much. FYI-Doesn't mess around with BS. No joke...study a ton for the tests.

Professor Quirk is an entertaining teacher. He is also very knowledgable. Seriously though, Study your ass off, especially the essays. Overall, I would recomend him to just about anyone.

He really makes history come alive! It's amazing that he almost anticipates questions and can spout off information without looking. You will definately work, but it's very worth it!

I absolutely adore Martin Quirk. He is my fav professor at RVC. He really loves and gets into what he teaches and the class discussion is amazing! You'll get excited over random things. He helps you in every way he can if you ever need any assistance...

Mr. Quirk is challenging and very interesting if you take him you'll love his classes they are so interesting.

Very entertaining and knowledgeable. He will help you if you put forth the effort. He takes it seriously as a college course. Study!

The book is a waste of money b/c the class only requires you to know History as by DR Quirk... note the DR. He exspects alot on the essay questions and his grading is not clear. Have to write 2 2pg papers and a 10 pg paper. Nice guy but alot of work if you want an A.

This is a very interisting guy, i wish he would gather his lectures up and put them into book form, I would buy it. I loves his lectures and he puts history into an easy to understand timeline. Lots of work, but the best history teacher hands down. I was quite in his class and he never gave me a hard time for it. Understands his students well.

As a history major I just LOVED his class. He has a very good note system (IMO) and textbooks that help. While his tests can be hard they are fair. For essays on tests, he lets you know what he wants. Very approachable outside class and will look over your work if you have a question.

Take Dr. Quirk!! Warning he assigns a lot of work; 2 book reviews,10 page biography and weekly quizs every thursday. Lectures are interesting, making learning enjoyable.Although he is hard, you'll know your U.S. History.

Prof. Quirk is awesome. He actually tries to make history exciting. The only hard part about his class is that you can't skip it because you'll miss important notes.

The best teacher I have ever had! He loves teaching, cares about students & relates to them well. Makes history interesting. I've taken him multiple times, even at 8 in the morning & didn't yawn once. The class is hard, but show him a paper or an essay ahead of time & he will tell you what what grade it would be & help you improve it. VERY helpful.

Quirk is extremely entertaining and an excellent teacher. If you do well on the tests and do the papers, it's an easy grade, whatever you're shooting for. I would highly recommend that anyone who wants to take a history course take Quirk's class.

Quirk is one of the best teachers at RVC. Get to know him, he is always willing to talk and help. He is smart, but down to earth and always makes for an interesting class. He challenges you to recall a lot of material but he makes it easy if your willing to work for it.

he knows his stuff! comming to class is a deffinate must because on average i write 5-6 pages of notes in that class per day,but my handwriting is large as well. besides if you dont miss he rewards perfect attendance . quirk is amazing, and very passionate. only two tests but all essay,and two book reports. he lets you know what will be on tests

one word of advice, DON'T MISS CLASS. He makes class fun, I love him as a teacher. His tests are another story, he expects you to memorize a great deal especially for the final. If you are a history major Quirk would be very helpful to you, if you are like the rest of us then the class is made more difficult than it should be.

Quirk's a nice guy, and his classes are enjoyable. His greatest strength IMHO is the clarity and order of his lectures, which makes it very easy to take notes. The exams are fairly easy, as long as you pay attention in class. He assigns a few papers which require a good bit of effort, but nothing too strenuous. I highly recommend his classes.

Professor Quirk is hands down the best professor I've had at RVC. As long as you show up for class, take the notes, and study what he tells you, you will do fine in the class. In my opinion Dr. Martin Quirk is the hardest and most influential profesor on campus, he is very straight foward, very strict about citing in papers i had a 16 page paper and he gave me an F becouse of citing issues. If you dont miss a class he is your best friend. DO NOT txt or write notes he will excusse u on the spot. Essays up the wazzu!

Quirk is one of my favorite professors at RVC and I only have 2. He tells you what he wants on the tests as well as the writing assignments and he gives you plenty of time to get them done. He is also a good guy and very approachable. If you ask for help, you shall receive but a closed mouth doesn't get fed.

Quirk is certainly an incredible teacher, I would recommend him to anybody, but just know that he is a hard ass! You will work for your grade. He is particularly picky about attendance, so show up every day and I guarantee something good will happen. He tests are essay, he hates rude kids so be a good student, go to class everyday.

Quirk is a very good teacher, but he does not think of those that have to do anything else other than his class. Out of a full class schedule, you will probally have to give most of your effort to this class. Saying that, he is very clear on what he wants and what you can do to get a good grade.

At the beginning I dreaded his use of essay tests. It turned out to be easy for me to catch on to the flow of his class and the essays and papers became a breeze. Thanks to Dr. Quirk, essays are a lot less intimidating now. He really cares about his students and their work and has a sense of humor. All around great guy!

Quirk is an out standing teacher. He does expect you to come to class and participate. Paying attention in class is very important as well.

Dr. Quirk is a great teacher, and when he went on maternity leave Prof. Swenson filled in during Dr. Quirk's absence. Both of the professors are great. I learned a lot from Prof. Swenson and I really liked his powerpoint presentations. They helped a lot = especially for me. I like both of these professors.

I agree with the previous student. Prof. Swenson is really good. His lessons about the Boston Massacre and rebellion were outstanding, and the way he presented the Revolutionary war was super. I really learned a lot in his class. I'm thinking of taking Swenson's later history class.

AWESOME TEACHER!!!!! He scared the crap out of me the first few days, but it made me never ever want to skip his class. He gives so much extra credit. And almost every assignment in my class was extended atleast a couple days. Plus he is hilarious. I would definitely take him again.

I thought that this class would be the most boring class of my whole schedule but Quirk is a great history teacher and really makes history a fun thing to study!! His class is mainly note taking with papers and a few quiz's but he prepares you well for them!! Dr.Quirk is probably the best teacher i have ever had great guy!!

I had him for both 142 and 143. His class is actually very easy to do well in--it's pure memorization. However, if you're really looking to make an impression, don't bother if you're not a Model UN student. The UN kids are the "creme de la creme," and a lot of them act like they're so elite. He really does cut some slack for them.

Quirk is a great professor. He is helpful, understanding, and an all around good guy. He does not cut the Model UN students any slack (I know, I am one). If you ask for help he will assist you. He does not show favoritism. Ask and you shall receive.

Quirk is an amazing professor. He treats you like college students and actually teaches the class at a college level. He knows EVERYTHING about what he teaches so don't even try to bs the huge paper. Never met someone who knows what they are talking about as much as he does. He has a photographic memory, so use that information wisely. Do not cheat, or he will know. Show up, and youll do just fine.

Dr.Quirk is great but he does not tolerate rudeness, if your the type to miss a day here or there then you don't want to take his class. Do your work take detailed notes and study a lot and you'll be fine.

He is a bit arrogant, but always knows exactly what he's talking about. I loved the class, but it was definitely a challenge. The midterm was probably one of the most difficult tests I've ever taken because of the amount of info we needed to know. He doesn't take any BS so unless you're there to learn don't bother taking any of his classes.

My dad and I are historical reenactors and I have grown up learning history. Quirk is so focused on his version of history that he will not listen to real history. I can not wait to be done with this guys class. I will not take his class ever again.

He is the best history teacher there. He is very clear and never leaves you off focus. He does like to tell family stories but it keeps us interested. You will do well if you take notes. Not a easy professor or class. I basically failed the midterm. You MUST be there for every class especially the last class & take all the extra credit he give you can pass the class. If you are looking for a easy class don't take him but if you are looking for interesting class he is it. History seems alive when he tells it

Great teacher- easy to listen to which is important because you have to know details to pass his tests. If you have a tendency to miss classes, don't take Dr Quirk. But if you want to learn, he's your teacher.

He really knows his stuff about history and is passionate about the subject. Would definitely recommend him, one of my favorite teachers.

QUirk really knws his material and teaches it in a way that makes it easy to understand. His lectures are easy to follow andd he repeats things a lot just to drive the info into your brain. If you attend his class, read the text and pay attention, you will do well. He also doesn't take any crap from people so don't think you can argue with him.

His is hard in a sense, but straight forward and simple at the same time. He knows how to teach, I feel I learned a great deal on my own at his guidance. I would recommend him if you need history. You won't have any suprises and you will know how to succeed in his class, what more could you ask for?

Make sure you take good notes because it will help you on the midterm and final. His midterm and final are really hard. It is all written and you have to be able to write a paragraph for each term and a few pages for the essay questions. His lectures are great and he tell all kinds of stories to helps you relate the info.

I took two of his classes - AMAZING teacher and extremely helpful. guaranteed to get an A if you show up, participate, and study for the tests. Tests are hard but if you study the way he tells you to then you'll do great!

Great teacher! He's tells random funny stories all the time, but and keeps the topic interesting. Gives points for attendance and you will work hard on the papers and finals, but he isn't a harsh grader as long as you follow the directions. I recommend this Porf!

I loved taking Quirk. He has all these funny and interesting stories. His tests can be hard if he does not eliminate any of the terms or essays, but if you're lucky he will give you the terms that will be on the midterm or final. Everything you need to study for the tests are in the notes. He is very fair.

Dr. Quirk is a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory and be ready to take LOTS of notes. The only things that can bring your grade down tremendously is the mid-final and final. The papers are pretty easy if done right from the syllabus and what he expects. He is very passionate about history; I hated history, but now I remember what we learned.

The class is definitely a challenge, especially from 7:30am to 10:30am over the summer session II. However, he is very very helpful in every way he can be and gives breaks by telling hilarious personal stories. The tests are insane, but if you study you'll be fine. I got a 93 on the mid term and a 100 on the final, so it is possible. Great Class!!!

Dr. Quirk is a great professor. His class is REALLY hard, and you need to attend all of the classes to pass. He tells a lot of storeis that were a nice breck from the four hour history class. I highly recommend him to anyone in need for a serious collage class.

I absolutely love Dr. Quirk. During my time at RVC I took every single one of his classes, and I was fortunate enought to do Model UN (which he runs). He is one of the funniest, most helpful and smartest people I have ever met, and he's become a mentor to me. Even though I've graduated from RVC, I still talk to him on a regularly. Take his class!

Doctor Quirk is a fun teacher who likes to make jokes and tell stories. If you study for the tests, you will do fine. Didn't even open the textbook. Pay close attention with notes because he speaks them and you just have to write them down as he talks. Overall good teacher and class!

Dr. Quirk is fun and likes to crack jokes, but more than that he cares about helping his students succeed. He goes out of his way to help any student make sure they are ready for the tests and papers if you ask for help. Dr. Quirk is my favorite Prof. thus far. He takes a subject like History Pre 1865 and makes it interesting. He mixes things up with personal stories (which would usually annoy me)but relates them back into the topic.Very low amount of homework I will CERTAINLY be taking him for HST143. Put in the effort, you'll get an A. I LOVED HIS CLASS!

Great teacher! Genuinely cares about his students (RUNNING START, MODEL UN, OR NOT)he does not play favoritism contrary to a previous comment. He just likes the students who he knows are going to put in the effort.He likes the ones who are struggling or not putting in effort too and will help you with anything you need IF YOU ARE WILLING TO ASK.

Took over the summer and loved it! Class flew by and this guy really knows how to make the class interesting. Has a lot of personality and gives you a lot of hints about the exam. He will talk about his family and tell you stories about his intense dad (war vet). No book required because he thinks they're over priced. Take him!!

Dr. Quirk is the best teacher I've ever taken at Rock Valley. He really shows interest in his students and knows what we go through. He really takes the time to explain the material thoroughly and prepares for the tests. His book reviews can be tricky, but if send him a rough draft he can tell you what you need to improve. Hands down, the most excellent professor I've ever had. I had him for three semesters! He helped me with my study abroad, and even gave me to tools to land an incredible internship. He got me so ready for four year university

I would definitely recommend Dr. Quirk! Time flies in class and it is enjoyable to listen to him. He tends to go off on hilarious tangents. He is a very easy grader and there is no textbook. There are four book reviews and an essay style midterm and final. He offered extra credit quite frequently.

I had a bad first impression of the class, but now that its half way over I really do like it. The teacher is very nice and interesting to listen to. The class isnt stressful like I expected. Dont skip assignments or class bc it'll reflect in your grade. The only remark I'll make is that the pace is too fast sometimes. Take this class :)

Quirk is a really good professor. He makes class really easy. I'm not a big fan of his teaching methods though. Taking notes during lectures gets confusing because he will start jumping around and talking about random, unrelated things. I think I've learned more about his personal life than history. But it's a pretty easy A if you try and show up.

I took him for a summer class. It was a history class. I suck at history. I enjoyed his class and any questions I had; he was there.

Prof. Quirk gave me a lot of extra credit and even gave us 100% on a book review just because we attended class that day. Would highly recommend.

My favourite professor hands down. First professor I came out as trans to, and definitely the most helpful! He cares more about just grades, and he's willing to help you with your actual life and transfer colleges and all that. Two tests: Midterm and final - both easy when you study. He gives copies of both before you take them. Definitely a 1010

Took the 4 week summer class & if you want to take a history class, take him! He is so funny & personable. Flies through the lessons, shows different movies, & loves helping out. Would take it again, definitely! My class had a midterm, final, & a 10 page paper on a historical figure of your choice. Haven't met someone who hasn't liked him!

This course was exceptionally easy, I thoroughly enjoyed being in Professor Quirk's summer class. Considering the book was not recommend this semester, he assigned a 10pg biography on any historian. We received all the questions to the midterm & the final, as well as the answers. If you're going to take the class taken in the summer.

Quirk's classes are by far the best I have ever taken. Take notes, participate and ask questions, and you should attend due to it being graded. His style of teaching is hilarious and he is a great guy. Any help you need you will get don't be afraid to ask! And be sure to read the books he assigns (hint many of them are found in the library).

Best teacher at RVC hands down! I took Professor Quirk many years ago and then again recently. He tells history like a story and his lectures fly by and you want to hear more. I wish he would teach additional history classes because I would take them all! Very enjoyable class. I highly recommend this class!

Dr. Quirk is amazing. His lectures are interesting, and he always digresses into hilarious stories. The only tests are the midterm and final, and there's four book reports due. Treat him with respect and participate in class and you should have no problem. Great guy. Only made the easiness a 4 because I worked hard in his class. Probably a 3.

I absolutely love his class! He could easily turn me into a History major! He is so enthusiastic and entertaining! He does require a few assignments but the exams are take home! Also he will give the class many extra credit opportunities that you shouldn't miss out on. You can tell on the first day of class that he absolutely loves his job.

There are 4 book reviews for the class, a mid term, and a final. He gives awesome lectures and many opportunities for extra credit. Everything is laid out in the syllabus. He uses eagle! The book reviews are not too bad (I skimmed the books) and are a minimum of 4 pages. The mid-term and final are all memorization! Overall not too bad.

Professor Quirk is one of the best teachers I have ever had! He makes learning history interesting by relating stories from his own life into his lectures. He is also very knowledgeable in the material that he lectures. He will also be more than gladly to help a student if they need it. I highly recommend him.

This is a class where you will watch multiple documentaries, hear some great music from the era of focus, and be allowed to take your test home. There are a few assignments that must be submitted here and there. As well as attendance will be marked as a grade. It helps to take notes as you can use them on your test, so take great notes.

Dr. Quirk has a very laid-back teaching approach and is very accommodating to students. His lectures are engaging and full of personal stories and humor. The mid-term and final are based off of material covered in lectures, so taking notes is a must.

Hands down the best professor at RVC! His lectures flew by and we're hilarious. He assigned book reviews but ended up just giving us 100%'s on two of them. The final was essay questions in class and a take home essay. He graded the take homes in front of us very quickly, and I'm not sure he actually read them. Nonetheless I will be taking him again

I promise you'll never be bored in this class. however, he does assigned 4 papers and all you have to do is review 4 books. I will warn you that the mid term and final exams are hard but if you study LOT you'll do fine.

One of the greatest professors I've had at RVC. I had him for HIS-142 & HIS-143, both of which were amazing. His lectures are great, and make history come alive! He is also very hilarious! You cannot go to RVC and not take a class with him! Make sure you take good notes during the lectures.

One of the best professors at RVC. I took his Hist 143 course over the summer, so it was a 3 hour class. Not a single time during those 8 weeks did it feel like a 3 hour class because he made the material very interesting and then incorporated his stories which are awesome. I took him for Hist 142 and would gladly take him again without a doubt.

Really awesome professor who knows his material. He's got a ton of stories to tell about the topics that really drive the class through the day. Be prepared to do a lot of note taking, not showing up won't work out too well in his class. The only homework are four book reports and then you have a mid term/final.

Quirk is by far my favorite professor. I have never liked history and it has always been my weak point, but he made class both interesting and worth while. He doesn't drag on to the point where you're half asleep. He's very lenient and understanding compared to most college professors. Just don't skip class and be sure to take good notes.

Course may seem tough in the beginning, but he is always willing to work with you. Wish he didn't go off on so many personal stories (I would rather learn the course work), but he will never test you on anything he didn't lecture about.

One of the nicest professors at RVC, but I will warn you about his online class since COVID. It's not like his usual in-person classes, he has all the homework and reading on a separate website this semester which is a bunch of weekly reading and quizzes and activities. There is one paper that is a final which is pointless but an easy A class.

Took class online. He is a good lecturer. Going to class wasnt necessary mandatory because it was recorded, but its the only its the only way to learn the material. He also gave a huge easy extra credit assignment that you could only do if you went to class.

For exams, he will tell you literally exactly what you need to know, which makes it super easy to study and you will know exactly what to expect.

If you don't like history, I highly recommend Quirk. He makes class fun and he literally gives you the midterm and final exam before you take it. Each exam covers 1/2 of the semester material. When I took the class, there were only four essays on the four books you needed, and 2 of those essays he just had us watch a movie for in class and write a 2-4 page essay. There was also a mid-term, a final, and a take-home final which he gave us the exact questions for a week before the exams, more than enough time to study for them.

Dr. Quirk was a very funny guy and did a good job at making 7:30 AM classes enjoyable. I was always excited everytime I showed up to class. He is an easy grader when it comes to book reports but from exams he up his grading a tiny bit but you get to see the exams beforehand which is extremely helpful. Professor Quirk in my experience was the best teacher. On the midterm he gave an extra 11 points and for the final 10. He also gave out extra credit over the semester for assignments as well. Just write down what he says during his lectures word for word and memorize it alongside the dates included for his tests.

The online class is great! as long as you read and understand the text, you will do good on the homework. There are 2-3 assignments each 23 multiple choice per week which is a bit heavy, but if you go through all the material you should be good. He's very understanding when it comes to late work. I took 2 classes with him and both went very well!

He is a very good professor, loves what he teaches, and always hands out extra credit, usually class-wide. For HST143, there are only 4 essays, a midterm, and a final. He grades the essays with much leniency as long as you follow basic MLA style. Overall, my favorite professor at RVC.

Prof Martin W. Quirk is great. Can't say anything bad about him, he never gives out tests and there's only 1-2 assignments due on Fridays. No final exam either. The whole class is literally just teaching yourself about history. IDEAL online class!!
