Teaches from a biological perspective, so if your into biology(anatomy) he is great, but if you are into social psych. then take someone else.
He's very funny and a great teacher!

Awesome prof! He's really funny. I liked his class even though it was more biological than I was expecting.....great teacher!
Kinda hard class but I really learned a lot. Prof. is funny and nice. Kept it interesting.
Awesome teacher.Very understanding and patient, some matieral may be bland, but he always makes class fun and entertaining.the best kept secret in the Psych Dept.
So Funny!!!! Great Prof!
Great!
I took it online. The assignments were interesting, and the lectures were funny.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life! If you can avoid him by any means, DO IT. Sure I got a B, but that was HOURS of busting my A**! He is cool in the sense that he jokes around, but way too much material for a 3 unit class. Be prepared for a quiz, exam, or anatomy test EVERY single week you are in that class. No joke..EVERY WEEK!
I was in the same class as the rater below me, and he's right, the material was hard. Lots of tests and quizes, but the prof was great at explaining things and very helpful. He was funny, it was a good class, I worked my butt off too, but learned a lot! Study everything on the review sheet- all 150 things, you never know what will be on the test!
Dr. Shapiro is one of the best profs. I've had here. Take any and all of his classes! (unless your lazy, then maybe he's not for you.)
Dr. Shapiro Rocks! It was an excellent class, not easy, but excellent.
This teacher sucks.
Great professor! Interesting lectures and extra credit offered. No papers but somewhat difficult tests you'll have to study for.
This course is challenging but Dr. Shapiro is very funny and makes the class enjoyable.
Dr. Shapiro is an awesome teacher, but there is alot of material. There arent any papers, so ur grade is based on tests and quizzes. You get points for being in class as well as extra credit iclicker ?s. This class is difficult, so go in prepared to study, but he is the best professor for the class. He will make you laugh. :)
cool guy. the material is easy, but there is A LOT of it. IF YOU DO NOT STUDY YOU WILL SUFFER!!!! only take this class if you have time to study at least every other day!!
He is really freakin hard. Not a class you want to take if you are juggling other hard classes. The final is COMPREHENSIVE and your grade is based off of test and quizzes. I really did not like this class.
Funny, funny guy. I did well, but I took it pass/fail.I understand its pretty easy either way. save your pass/fail if youre an honors student for 101, if your going to do it.
Funny guy, took him for hon 102 for credit no credit, dont do that... you can easily get an A with a bit of effort. He makes it very interesting.
He has a biology degree so is the best teacher to take for this biopsych class, since he can answer a lot of questions. He makes it really entertaining and class is usually not boring. Organized, easy to talk to, tells you his expectations. Don't need the book much because his topics are in a mixed order. I loved this class and he's a great teacher
Dr. Shapiro really knows his stuff. Funny, easy to understand. Follow his power points & lecture. I backed that up with the book and did great. He will explain anything you don't understand. Attend lecture follow up with the book and you'll do fine. I would take him again. He's great!
I loved his class. If you like easy courses this professor isn't for you. He's very helpful, funny and his course is interesting. You must study to do good. It wasn't hard, it just took application and studying.
This class is hard, but the teacher makes it fun. He keeps the lectures interesting. If you study, the tests will be easy. Great teacher.
Awesome teacher! Very entertaining. He tries and make it easier to understand topic and is approachable to answer question. Tests however, are quite difficult so study a lot! Also, take advantage of extra credit.
This teacher is awesome! He is full of energy and is funny. You wont fall asleep in his class. However, the test are hard. Study often 2 hrs a day at least. Print out power points which helps but make sure you ask questions if you don't know. He is welling to help in his office hours. OVERALL great teacher hard class.
I took him for both 36 and 122. He is a really interesting teacher and teaches in a way that makes you want to learn. His tests are not tricky, but are in depth. I would recommend.
Best instructor i've had!!! keeps you awake and you actually learn the material being taught. i haven't used the book and my exam scores have been above average.
I took both his bio and 122 class last semester. Both classes are highly recommended, but a lot study time for the 36 class if you wish to do well. I enjoyed 122 a lot given the readings that he gave us each week. I learned really interesting and cool science! Take him if you have the chance.
Dr. Shapiro is the best teacher in the Psych department. He is hilarious and class time flies by. The material is difficult, but he does everything in his power to make you succeed. He should be teaching at an ivy league school, he is that brilliant. I would definitely take him again. You need to study for tests and quizzes, but as long as you come to class everyday it will be more like reviewing for tests.
Absolutely loved this class! Material was not easy, but Dr. Shapiro made this course interesting and fun! I took this class online during the summer, the course load was rigorous but enjoyable. Dr. Shapiro is the best!
Dr. Shapiro is an amazing teacher. He keeps you interested. He makes the subject funny while teaching you some very important material. His test are difficult but if you study (not right before the test) you will do fine. He helps the students when they ask. He evens has extra days that he just answer your questions. I would take him again.
Dr. Shapiro is a great instructor. But he goes a little fast sometimes. He is VERY helpful & responds to emails pretty fast - very impressive! He's super funny too! He also uses the iclicker, so if you're shy & don't like to speak up in class like myself, this is a good class for you. You definitely have to study for this class.
This is a great Professor & he's hilarious. Excellent class but you definitely need to study for this class. This class ain't no joke!
Easy course to take! Watch the youtube lectures and take notes to do well, they are actually pretty entertaining! The exams are not too hard, but if you don't do too well on one, there are plenty of other (easy) online assignments to make up for the points. I enjoyed the material, and never worried about my grade in the class. Easy A.
I did not buy the book and earned a B - the book cost too much for me. Dr. Shapiro is great at explaining things, but his tests can be difficult because he asked specific questions. Just print out the powerpoints to take notes along with the lecture He is great at responding to emails. He also offers extra credit for participating in his studies!
His lectures are entertaining enough, but it's the book that's a bore. He doesn't make you read the entire chapter, just a few sections. His tests are really hard and the questions don't really come from his material. You kind of have to guess what the answer is bc you never remember reading about it. He has a lot of quizzes and a paper.
Dr. Shapiro is amazing! By far the most hilarious professor I've ever had here at state. The class does consist of some difficult material in that it heavily deals with the brain (it is a neuroscience class). 2 exams, study and you should be fine. 2 brain anatomy quizzes (easy), 1 webpage that you have to create with a 1400 word essay. Recommend!
Dr Shapiro is a great professor, but do not let that fool you. His class cover a lot of material in a very short period of time. You definitely need to study a lot for quizzes and tests. About 6 total quizzes and 4 tests. No papers or any other assignments. Great class, but difficult.
Professor Shapiro is an amazing professor. I took the TTh class and we only had class Tuesday's. He wrote his own book and it is very easy to understand. Thursday class is online. A lecture gets posted and a quiz is due before class Tuesday and a 5 question in class quiz occurs on Tuesday from the lecture. Class time is spent discussing the topic.
Don't chicken out on this class. You won't realize how much you needed it until the first day. Amazing professor. He's a neuroscientist with a personality, class is never boring. Read your textbook. Spend 2 hours a week on the class. Tests are tough if you don't sit down to know and understand material. Such a great teacher!!
I took him on his first semester teaching Environmental Psychology. Class was light on psych, heavy on enviro, but the content was interesting nonetheless. There's a major group project, and I usually hate those, but this one was a lot more fun and interactive than any other group project I've done. He's also a funny guy, so that's a plus.
Dr. Shapiro is amazing! Gives great lectures and is very clear. There are 2 anatomy tests as well as two lecture tests (midterm and final). The rest are short quizzes done at home and in class. There is a web expert paper that was pretty easy. Overall the class is easy but does require a lot of studying.
I took Motivation Online with Dr. Shapiro. No book is required. Plenty of assignments to accumulate points. Keep up on your lectures and make sure you pay attention to due dates. Work in groups if possible.
Dr. Shapiro is by far the best professor at Fresno state. Extremely smart, funny, and kind. Get ready to read for quizzes and to dedicate some time for this course. I've taken him for biopsych as well. He's overall just a great passionate teacher.
Shapiro is a great professor, he forms his class like a hybrid class so you do the reading before class and then he answers any questions about the chapter in class. It is a great way to learn. His class is the only class I can stay fully awake and aware in! Be ready for heavy content with this class, not an easy A.
Shapiro is the best professor I've had so far at Fresno State. I definitely recommend him and if I could I would take his class again. I enjoyed his class and he made it interesting to learn. Love love his way of teaching. I passed his class with an A but you have to work for it and read before class and read the book again before the exam.
I took this class in the summer for 6 weeks. It was a lot of reading, and watching videos and lectures. You will learn a lot and it's interesting. As long as you do every assignment, I think anyone can get an A. I even took this class while on vacation and was still able to manage. The class is organized and easy to understand.
Professor S. wrote his own e-textbook, so there's no need for purchase. Reading is necessary, but luckily the chapters are pretty interesting & only 3-6 pages long. There are quizzes taken on your personal digital device every class meeting so studying is integral. I recommend making flashcards on quizlet for this, esp. for the midterm & final.
PRO: meets 1x/week (even though scheduled for 2x), great lecturer (Dr. Shapiro is very knowledgeable in the field and even humorous at times), free textbook online. CON: weekly assignments, quizzes before and after classes + online quizzes 1x/week, research project with a topic that he assigned for you (+ create a website!)
This is more of tips rather than a rating! 1) For the online quizzes, look up the "transcripts" of each video, it'll save you a lot of time. 2) Do the extra credits. 3) After each section he adds "end of the section" bullet points, read those! they're a summary of the key parts of the section! 4) participate, he'll remember you. Good Luck :)
Took it as an online course and it is very lecture heavy. Lots of work so be prepared to work. Quizzes every week and tests after each chapter. If you don't do the work, you don't pass. He doesn't use any text book so everything is from his powerpoint and videos. Tests are a bit confusing so you'll have to do extra research to understand material.
Professor Shapiro is a great professor, but if you take his classes online BEWARE this isnt an online class you can just get by with the help of Quizlet. You have to watch the lectures, takes notes and make sure you understand what you are learning. Its a manageable class but its a class of actually understanding the concept & applying that.
Dr. Shapiro is the best professor I've had at Fresno State. He really cares about what he does and I learned a lot from this class. This isn't an easy A class, I had to work my butt off but it was worth it. I highly recommend making flashcards each week with the key terms from the textbook. If you are a psych major you should 100% take this class.
Loved the class! Learned a lot on motivation. 3 week course so super fast and packed with information. Read, take all quizzes, participate in discussion, do the resource paper, and you will do well. Tests are harder than quizzes, the wording can be tricky. Take notes during ppts. Dr. Shapiro was very inspirational and passionate about his field.
This class is not easy A. I took the summer 6-week course, intense class. Make sure you watch his lectures and take notes, do all the required assignments. He offers extra credit. Dr. Shapiro responds to emails quickly and grades quickly also. He is very kind and a great professor. Highly recommend.
Weekly quizzes and homework assignment, but fairly easy !
The course was straightforward and organized. He responds to emails quickly!
Took as a 3 week class so it was a lot of work, but was organized and we could get ahead which was great. Lectures were engaging with good examples and not too long. Supplemental material/assignments weren't on exams but were easy ways to get points. We had open note exams. If you take notes on lectures and do assignments on time, the class is easy
Shapiro is a wonderful professor every week you have homework and BOC quizzes two tests a sleep study anatomy paper on the brain and a reflection paper the test is hard but he does a study session I learned a lot
What a great professor! Took Physiological Psych at ODU. He met with me when I had some questions about future career choices and provided some great information. Weekly assignments of BOC quizzes and chapter homework. If you read, watch the lectures, and complete assignments, you'll do great! I wish he had more courses at ODU!
Prof Shapiro cares & is passionate about what he's teaching! His tests don't cause anxiety dreams, by taking his tests and watching his review sessions, I learned even more. --go figure, a professor that understands the brain actually induces Long-Term Potentiation! (I took this as an ODU student--he was one of the best professors I've had!)
Dr. Shapiro is an amazing professor! Hes passionate about what he does and it shows in his lectures. The concepts were difficult at times but he makes it interesting to learn. HW and BOC quizzes due each week but theyre pretty easy. Only 2 tests, 2 other extra assignments, and 1 opportunity of Ex Cred offered. Not an easy A but I learned a lot!
Lectures were all found on youtube and does not use a book. Exams were difficult because sometimes topics were not on exam or vise versa. So study hard, listen very carefully to topics and get a study group together! Not on quizlet makes his own exams and if you try to work through them with classmates the questions are different on each exam.
Professor Shaprio was really easy to relate to. Lectures were all found on youtube and does not use a book. Exams were difficult because sometimes topics were not on exam. So study hard, listen very carefully to topics and get a study group together!
All exam questions come from lectures. He will ask small details to make sure you watched them. Uses lots of trick questions. There is no textbook, uploads all info used in quizzes.
Took this course in the middle of the pandemic. As long as you read the textbook, do the weekly homework, and take the weekly quizzes on the select videos you will be fine. The only thing I did not like was the textbook's explicit preference for animal models. I was expecting a more detailed approach based on the human model.
The quizzes and exams are brutal. 20 point exams, 5 questions, 10 minutes. His PowerPoints are filled with pictures, so it is hard to understand what is even going on. I had a 79% and all I needed was a 81% on the final exam, but I ran out of time. He decided to make the final 70 minutes with 50 questions. I ran out of time at question 36.
pretty easy class, especially if you have taken anatomy, shapiro is a great teacher, he explains things very well, two tests and homework assignments each week that take about 30 minutes. class is only once a week. would definitely recommend
3 week course so super fast, spring intercession. Read, take quizzes, discussions, research paper, exams. Tests are hard, take notes/ study. Interesting and informative course. We discussed grad school & he didn't think I would get accepted into the programs, applying anyway & hope to prove him wrong :)
All I am going to say is you are in for a treat... He is funny and knows what he is talking about... even when things get really specific, he makes sure everyone understands it... just do the study guide and read the book and get an A with flying colors. Funniest professor I have ever had and he makes learning feel so easy.
The material is one of those things that you'd enjoy more if you had the time to, but is difficult. You have to at least watch his video lectures every week, write down important notes from the book, which he wrote but you still must pay for. Weekly homework quizzes can be long but you can quizlet them. Do the bare minimum and you'll be fine.
I took Professor Shapiro's hybrid class. In all honesty, coming to class was mostly for the quizzes he had in the beginning of class + review. Most of the learning was provided through his video lectures. This class was hard for me. Professor Shapiro is passionate but the lecture and material was a lot. Be ready to read and watch a lot.
Class was definitely hard. If you did well on quizzes or homework, you grade barely increased but one wrong grade and boom you're down. Exams are hard, only 2 and your grade really depends on them. Nice professor but I would not have taken this class with other classes because of the workload. He warned us most people pass with a B so be careful
Not a bad teacher, but you have to be interested in the subject for good grade. Quizzes online before & after class, so make sure to be on time and read the textbook beforehand if you want to understand the lecture. Has a quiz every week where you either have to listen to a podcast, watch Tedtalks, or read an article. Exams were hard, low averages.
He assigns one assignment every week based on the book chapters, consisting of a 30-question test. Attendance is important, as he conducts a 6-point Socrative quiz before each class. It's possible to pass the class with a C even without passing the exams. There are 3 exams, and he allows you to use a large flashcard. Highly recommended for freshman
This class was fairly easy. I had it on Tuesday's and Thursday's so the class was 1 hr 15 min. There were 3 exams (100 pts each) with 50 questions and 1 homework assignment a week worth 15 points each. All the assignment and exam material over lap because he created the textbook which is online. Don't miss class because it's part of your grade.
He was super nice and a good prof to talk to if you need help! The curriculum for the class is pretty straight forward and it's hard for you to fail unless you genuinly don't care about showing up to class etc. I'd say it was a pretty easy class to get by.
My favorite professor so far! He's very friendly and understanding. Three tests that have 50 questions that you MUST study for. Attendance is extremely important
An exceptional professor! There was a lot of material he shared with the class but it made learning the content a bit easier. He also has dry humor if you're into that. Always ask questions because he has so much to say and can clarify any misunderstanding you may have. Biopsychology is a difficult subject, but Dr. Shapiro was always ready to help.
Don't fail the first test, study hard, use study guide, pray cause the test is unpredictable.
This professor is great, he is very enthusiastic throughout lectures and is extremely understanding. There are weekly homework assignments and 3 exams in total. You have to pay about $70 for your own textbook but he wrote the book himself and it goes well with his lectures, homework, and exams (so it is definitely worth it).
He is a good professor, his lectures are super interesting. He talks really fast sometimes with a lot of info so its kinda hard to keep up, wrc portion isn't really talked about, but his class was cool
This was one of the most difficult classes I have taken. Dr. Shapiro is nice/funny, but there is A LOT of concepts to grasp. There were some fascinating sections---and then others were so confusing. I was scared I was gonna lose my 4.0 GPA. Make sure to watch all the lectures. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.
There is A LOT of info you have to study for. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. But, as a teacher, you can really tell he loves to teach and is willing to help. He talks VERY FAST so be sure to pay attention. As long as you study and listen to his lectures, you will be 100% fine.
