My fav. prof at uvic...he's funny and the course is interesting...
100B much better than 100A
Very entertaining lectures, but refused to admit when he didn't know something
No Comments
Martin definatley has a sex appeal to him
No Comments
I find him a little obnoxious....study hard for exams!
Fun sweaters, excellent juice box action, jerky personality with unfair tests
100B a better class. interesting. Approachable, but study hard for tests
Teaches alright but has tricky exams
Only prof who insulted me infront of whole class. Good fasion sense.
What grown man drinks a juice box???
Picture Alan Alda.......with a juice box, and ya got it.
He's too wordy. He gives details on EVERY move he makes, he's uptight
Dr. Smith, you're AWESOME
Nice sweaters! Good Prof.
not too bad... hard tests... a little mean
good but tests are hard
talks too much, and tests are too picky, lecture is worthless!
very wordy prof, MC tests are tricky,
good teacher, average class, hard exams
A little ocd on his morning routine, but got out all the material
This is a great class and Dr. Smith is the BEST!!!
Awesome guy, even stops to chat for an hour on his lunch break. THANKS!!
Big nerd, but good prof. Controls large class well.
His eyes are sexy
dead sexy with juice box in hand, glad there's a photo of him in the text

this course is definitely worth taking
A great prof, interesting and funny, but brutal on exams...memorize the text or don't bother to study!
He speaks extreamly FAST
Charismatic. Too bad his lectures are useless. Memorize the text or DIE on exams.
Bad jokes and hard tests, but he makes the course material quite interesting
Fantastic Prof, i love his classes. His tests are a bit rough if you don't memorize the readings and you must have a firm grasp on concepts. Lectures are interesting and he posts all his notes on the web, two thumbs up for marty!!!
Very good lecturer, highly recommended for psych100A.
Fantastic lecturer!! He makes the class fun and enjoyable. He doesn't discuss the text in class but brings up topics that make you want to learn more. I recommend this prof.. he's one of the best!
Don't bother going to the lectures. Memorize the text and you'll get an A.
by far the best psych prof at Uvic. get in his classes, or you'll regret it.
Very clear. Gets students relaxed and involved. One of the best professors in terms of presentation skills that I've ever seen. Maybe a little too diplomatic at times. I'd like some more fiestiness.
Martin is the man! Kind, gentle and extremely intelligent. He is the perfect professor for university - he expects a lot but is also willing to give help and advice. He genuinely listens to his students and loves teaching. Martin is a must!
creat as the teacher!!!!
His lectures are great, the assignments are stupid and the test questions are tricky but if you know the text book and the yellow notes you'll do great. Oh and the bonus marks rock, I love this course.
UGH! I call it my inbred course! If you think this will be a "fun" elective, you are mistaken! Not the cool class I thought it would be. I find him very boring and repetitive! He WROTE the textbook so he IS the textbook! Blah blah blah!
The most important thing I've learned in this class is that I'm better off eating The Breakfast of Champions (special with both meats) in the caff than I am anttending his lectures. All his notes are on the web so attendance is pointless.
I am a fourth year student who decided to take this course to give psyc a try. Big mistake. But if you want to be tested on useless information in poorly written multiple choice exams this is the course for you.

I found this class really interesting. Prof does a good job at making it interesting for the students and does his best to answer all your questions. This class has 3 multiple choice tests that test your knowledge of the material.
assignments are stupid and aren't proofread well. lectures aren't about textbook material; he includes stupid stories about his life that don't pertain to course. Everything is "adaptive" and "evolved", even though evolution is a theor
The lectures are pointless, he doesnt teach. I study and prepare so much for the exams, only to end up with pointless questions about stuff that doesnt even pertain to the overall understanding of psyc, and of course bomb the exams.
He's not hot, but his T.A. Acia was amazing. Lectures are pointless, it's all in the textbook, and the video questions are on the web. Good course if you study hard. Skip class and just come in for exams. The assignments help.
He loves the sound of his own voice. Take Picard's section of Psyc 100a instead; you'll be overjoyed you did.
Psyc 100A was an interesting course. Smith was very organized and definitely knew his stuff.
I love him
An excellent teacher! Much more interesting than Picard, and he has the same name as the lead singer of delirious!
He's an awesome lecturer, really helpful in office hours. The tests are hard but material is easy to study. If you put in the time you can get a good mark.
100 times more interesting then Picard!!!! Very interesting lectures.
yah, don't bother with the assignments TOTAL waste of time. Lecture = nap time...all u need to do it read the text book!!! Lecture notes are even posted on the web.
He is very animated in lecture which is a blessing because otherwise none of us would stay awake. I like him because he knows how to teach, however if you want a good mark on the exam memorize the text.
He's a really nice guy and the stuff he talks about is way more interesting than Picard.
He's really nice and cute! I saw him reading the text book sitting on the floor outside the lecture hall while he was waiting for the evaluation to be done. He lookes like a 10-year-old kid! So cute!
I found the assignments extremely helpful. Definitely do the bonus marks! Smith's lectures were a little boring, but if you can stay awake you'll learn a lot. Memorize the text and class notes for exams!
Utterly unpleasant personage. Rude, disrespectful, aloof, you name it. I did not enjoy his class at all - even though I'm majoring in psych - because of the way he treated students. Very standoffish.
i love him
Avoid this class if possible, it is not an easy A! I studied my ass off my our midterm, I knew the material, I am a psych-major, and I left the quiz assuming I got a good grade. The result: I barely got a C plus. THis tests are absolutly ****
His tests are structured (mult choice) so that every answer is right, but one is just a tad bit better than the rest.
He's really nice and quite funny. You do have to study for the exams and read the textbook. His lectures make even the boring parts at least somewhat interesting.
Definitely not a cakewalk. He gives web assignments that his contemporaries dont bother with. This course killed an otherwise enjoyable semester. His exams are cryptic. I don't mind working if there is a payoff, but unless you like stress or low grades or both, DONT-
You can tell he really likes what he is doing.. hw wrote the textbook for gods sake!!! The exams are pretty hard but if you attend the lectures and READ everything they arent bad. The assigments are useful and so are the studies!
The tests are HARD. study study study. The questions can be pretty specific. Some people say the lectures are a waste of time, but they are somewhat interesting and help put the textbook in context. Not bad for an intro course.
Pretty good prof. He tried to larn everyone's name and there're like 400 students in both his classes. He seems to know what he's talking about, and he was prompt with posting notes on the net. Study hard though. His tests are NOT easy, and the assignments take forever.
The test are really hard, multiple choice with multipe right answers, its up to you to know which one he considers correct. go ahead, take the class but be prepared to study study study and for low grades
I have him on friday vedeo..wish i got him for the course but instead i got picard!! he's a really good speaker and atleast keeps me awake in the lecture.
Tests aren't hard if you understand the material. Grading system with the assignment option and bonus marks is great and gives you the best chance. Really knows his stuff and very interested in the material. Lectures/videos are entertaining, & all notes are posted on the net. One of my fave classes.
Had this teacher for Friday lectures - found he did not control the room well - too much talking hard to concentrate on what was going on. Tests were brutal, could be any of the above but this is the BEST answer... how can you study for that???
He's so awesome, is still one of my fave profs. Very well prepared and interesting lectures. Very intelligent/engaged in material. His tests aren't difficult if you study and have basic understanding. There r also many opportunities to do well otherwise. Straightforward material. Awesome prof!
Great prof, knows and likes his stuff, and makes you enjoy it aswell. tests are hard at first but once you know how to study for them, they are easy. if you get the chance switch into his class, better then the other option!
I am indifferent to this class, but Dr. Smith is a much better professor for a first-year class than Dr. Picard (with all due respect).
LOTS of reading involved in his class, and you WILL have to crack the book. Infophoto is a really neat project. It's nice to have a the prof call on you by name. The tests were tricky; it's a good idea to be "over-prepared".
This guy's an arrogant **** who seems to teach just for the enjoyment of lecturing a captive audience. Very pompous, and if you read a bit you'll see he doesn't really know his stuff. Martin, you're a turkey.
Simply a head case. His sh*t dont stink thats for sure. He prides himself in teaching 100 level psycs. Likes to make himself sound smart...pretty easy to do isnt it martin with 1st years. quite arrogant when approached about psychology.I think you need someone to deflate that head a bit there MARTIN
what a guy. he's the cat's pajamas. simply the bee's knees!
My favorite class and favorite prof. Friday videos are really interesting. Tests and assignments are pretty tough but fair.
Good teacher. The tests are pretty hard, though. Don't take the class looking for an easy A. It's perfectably doable, but you'll have to put some effort in.
great
WONDERFUL! He is smart, witty, and he knows how to teach. Although his notes are posted online, his lectures are a must go, simply because they are usually entertaining. I look forward to being in his 100B class!
well i took 100a with him that was quite good so i took 100b and it was even better! maybe its the context of the course or maybe he knows the material on psyc100b better! anyway he seems friendly and frequently gets class involved in discussions, tests are however a little tricky, not a GPA boaster course
Great prof! The class definitely covers a lot of material so be prepared to read for hours!
Great Prof. Don't take this class if you can't do (tricky) multiple choice tests and hate reading 40 pg chapters ... because that about sums up this course!! Interesting course, fun prof ... but study hard!!
Course was alright. Passable only through a lot of reading. Tests tricky, but not too bad. Prof? God damn awful. One of the worst profs I've ever had at UVic. Pompous, fake, and stupid. Utterly unapproachable outside of class, treats students like they're children. Waste of money, honestly. Try to get Picard instead. At least he respects students.
his lecture is interesting, but tests are too tricky!you need to read carefully about every little details!!Hard to get a high GPA
He's a very approachable and helpful prof who's dedicated to his students. The course was also very interesting and stimulating for the mind!
Great and very entertaining. A super interesting, involved, and intelligent professor. Beware however: TESTS ARE DIFFICULT NOT A GPA BOOSTER COURSE! Intro psyc at Uvic is tricky compared to mickey mouse elsewhere. However 100B is much easier than 100A. Do the bonus marks(5%potential) and assignments to help improve your grade if you care about GPA.
Very, very good teacher. I don't know about approachability, but easily the most interesting professor i've had yet.
doesn't acknowledge that there are students that aren't in the front row. seems like he's here for research. skips through notes. doesn't engage anybody who's passed the 10th row in a class of 400. nice enough guy, but i always have my hand up and get ignored. tough class.
The best teacher ever! Now watch out for Skelton in Psych 215.
awsome guy! easy to talk to and makes class interesting. my only beef is that during the slides he's kinda trigger happy. so they go by pretty quick.
Great prof..he's informative, goes at a good pace, and remembers your name..in class of over 200!
Midterms are tough...you study the book but the questions are worded so oddly that you get confused at what he is asking. Good at keeping you interested in class. Is a bit trigger happy, but notes are posted afterwards on the internet
Wording of the questions on the 3 midterms makes one want to take their HB #2 pencil (used, of course, to fill in the lengthy standardized multiple choice bubble sheets he gives you) and drag it across your carotid artery. Belives people will still attend class even though he posts all the notes, word for word, on the internet.

He is the BEST prof you will ever have - don't listen to the bad reviews! He is so nice, funny, and helpful, and the class is very easy - just read the textbook before an exam and pay attention in class (easy to do because he makes the class so interesting). You will learn a lot of interesting things in this class, I definitely recommend taking it.
He's just sooo good!
he is the best prof you will ever have! his lectures are all really intereseting and there is lots of student patricipation and discussions. he is so much better than the other psych prof and knows what he is talking about. tests are also very easy.
Best prof. I've ever had. Lectures are interesting, and test are easy. He really seems to care about his students as well. Unlike alot of other profs, he actually likes to teach!
He's prob the only prof who can remember all the students' names. Have the 'teacher' quality unlike most prof and exams can be tricky, but study up and one should do fine.
Amazing prof. He made every class interesting, even though they were at 8:30 am. He was funny, and he seems to really enjoy teaching. Even though I always sat in the back, he somehow knew remembered my name. impressive.
everyone seems to like him a lot. he's a good teacher but i find him obnoxious. that's a personal opinion however. if possible take it with dr. picard instead. he's better
Smith is a good guy and I was happy with his efforts to learn everyone's names. The material was very interesting and honestly this was the only class that I always seemed to manage to wake up for.
One of the best and nicest teachers at UVic. Goes out of his way to memorize everyone's name. Makes the topics interesting and who doesn't like a video on Friday's? Tries to teach a lot during his lectures which is why some people say he's trigger happy but there's a lot of material in the text. Made me interested in taking more psychology classes.
best teacher
One of the worst profs at UVic. Patronizing out of class, very rude, higher-than-thou attitude. Unapproachable. Refers to himself as 'uncle Martin'. Lectures are pretty dull and from the book. Likes to 'defer' questions instead of answering them if they're 'too hard', so nothing interesting or off-topic (but psy-related) gets answered. Disgraceful.
This is a really good guy/ teacher! I would highly suggest taking psyc 100 with him. The only class that I actually looked forward to attending in first year, and helped me choose my major of psychology. Lots of course material, but tests are straight forward if you read the yellow highlighted notes, and study guide helps aswell. High energy prof.
Good prof but warning first year psychology at Uvic is not "basket weaving" secondly changed grading scale a B+ grade in psyc is a A- grade in most other faculties POOR UNFAIR GRADING SCALE in psychology courses.
Well, he is a good professor, and good at teaching. But, his multiple choice tests are really tricky and hard. I thought I studied pretty hard, but I didn't do very well on the tests. Also, the assignments took so much long~! I don't recommend this class if you are taking it as an elective.
very interesting
very nice, enthusiastic, knows what he's talking about. very hard tests, realllllly makes you work for the mark. test questions are tricky and will throw you off if you don't know the material 100%
He is the best psych prof there is. If you have a chance to take his class do! He made me decide to major in psych!
Although his tests are hard, he teaches the class very well.
He teaches a really interactive class. You need to read the textbook and take notes from it. Fridays are movie days, you can print off all the notes from the website (don't bother taking any in class), and you can get bonus points from participating in psychology research studies. He is a great prof!
Interesting and enthusiastic prof. He made the class a lot more interesting, and therefore easier to learn about that I had expected. Really interactive, I love that he learns names! Polite and friendly after class, as are his TA's. Clear cut material and tests were consistent, fair questions. Fun class!
Amazing prof who will genuinely make you interested in psychology. His lectures are actually worth attending because there are lots of little demonstrations, interesting videos, cartoons, etc. A very nice guy who makes a huge effort to know his students and help them out.
He went materials too fast.. most of the stuff are from the text though. All the exams are m/c with no final but the m/c was very tricky so watch out!! You have to read the text very thoroughly. The assignments were optional but they took me so much time and I didn't get very high mark on them.
Dr. Smith made the lectures as interesting as you can make lectures. He really cares about the student body and is so easy to approach. One of my favorite profs so far!
Good teacher, tries to keep it interesting. do the textbook website questions and the tests are much easier.
He really likes to try and get everyone involved with the iclicker and he tries to learn everyones name even tho the class has 300+ students
Easily the best prof at Uvic. He knows most peoples names in a class of 300 students, and is very helpful if you need it. Great job Marty! hahah keep up the good work. I RECOMMENED THIS GUY 100%
Martin is an all around great guy. He is helpful, funny and willing to put in the extra time for his students. Easily my favourite teacher and therefore class so far.
He's a great prof. He teaches very fast in class and often changes slides b4 u finish copying which I find annoying sometimes but are all posted on blackboard right after. Tests are hard and the assignments require a lot of time. He's funny and makes the class very interesting.
A truely engaging, entertaining, and totally approachable prof. His lectures are interesting and test are more than fair. If you attend class and read the text material, it's difficult to get a mark lower than a A-.
A pretty good prof. He explains things very clearly and sticks little comics in his slides to keep you from falling asleep, which is hard to do in such a basic course. He also had little interactive things which helped, and somehow managed to learn everyone's name by the end of the course, which is impressive in such a huge section.
DMS, you are amazing, couldn't have made it through 100A without you. He made it interesting which is difficult when it is a first year intro course. Always try to get him.
He is very very good at what he does! Highly recommended!
He memorizes everyones name in a class of a couple hundred. If you can get in his psychology 100A or 100B class you should defiantly go for it.
Martin Smith is an awesome prof. He knows how to engage a class in the material, surveying and quizzing us with clickers constantly, showing movies, and presenting guest speakers. It's really nice to have such a competent professor for a broad, first-year class like psyc 100.
Best. Prof. Ever.
He is a truly great prof. He learns everybody's names which is absolutely amazing, as each class is over 200 people. He makes the classes really interesting and fun, and I hope that I can take another class with him sometime! Thank you Dr. Smith! I really enjoyed your class!
Dr. Smith is a great prof. His lectures are actually interesting, and his notes are thorough. The tests are multiple choice and pretty easy.
Dr. Smith is a really great guy who is obviously passionate about his work- something that I find inspiring. For this course, he was trying out a new discussion lecture style, with tests being based on the textbook. I became frustrated with the density of material, because I felt like I could never study enough to do well. But, he is still great!
Probably the best prof I have had yet.
If you can take a psych class withts prof., do it. He's amazing!
Dr. Smith is fantastic! He creates a lively environment in class. Provides pre and post lecture notes. Gives you options on how you want to be graded. The assignments are very straight forward and spread a part. You can earn bonus marks. Every friday you get to watch a video. Dr. Smith really captures your attention. Definately take his class!!!
Martin is a prof that loves what he does. His happiness in class kept me going. His exams are not what I would call easy with definitions, SA and MC. MUST read chapters thorougly! Nonetheless, I think he's a very friendly man & I'd take another class with him for sure! Provides opportunities for easy marks!
Such a great professor! He received an award for Excellence in Teaching this year and totally deserved it. He actually learns everyone's name in lecture and gets the whole class involved. He's very helpful when you ask questions outside of class, and never makes you feel bad if you volunteer an answer in class. If you take any psyc at all, get him!
Absolutely brilliant! Everything an intro-level prof should be!
Best Prof EVER!
He's g'ed up from the feet up. Nuff said
Could not have been any better! Evolutionary psychology is the most interesting course I have taken and Martin knows the material inside and out! He has the biggest heart and he really truly cares about his students. He made sure to remember everyones name! His teaching assist, Marei was fantastic as well, she is such a sweet heart! Thanx Martin!!
What an amazing prof! Had him for psyc 100 A and B and absolutely loved him! He was so helpful and extremely knowledgeable! He posted all the lecture notes online so you really didn't have to attend (although there were Clicker participation points). He really wants his students to excel and do well. He genuinely wants his students to enjoy the cla
AMAZING. First years, take this class! Interesting, pretty easy to understand, and sometimes even fun(!). Make sure to keep up with your reading, cause you might get put on the spot in lecture... because he learns the name of every one of his 300 students.
So great.
awesome prof!
I really enjoyed psych 100A this semester. Not only was it my favorite class to go to every TWF, I actually learned something! Martin Smith is a very good prof. Thank-you for your hard work. You make me want to succeed!!!
The class is fairly interesting, Dr. Smith is a very nice guy, easy to listen to and helpful. His exams are structured as 3 midterms so its not overwhelming, but the exams are fairly hard. Would reccommend this prof to psyc students
Not a fan of this guy. I can't put my finger on why. I just couldn't stand his lectures, plus the online discussion q's are HORRIBLE. So tedious/pointless.
I would say that in general hes a pretty good prof. His test are extremely hard tho.
hands down, my fav proff and class
The class is very interesting and Dr. Smith tries to be very entertaining but unfortunately fails miserably. Classes are a complete waste of time. You spend the majority of the time doing clicker questions that are unrelated to the material. The only way to do well in this class is to throughly read the textbook! Also takes weeks to get marks back
Excellent prof. His exams are fair, but make sure to study the Friday video questions!
Best Prof I've ever had. Extremely interesting and cares for the students. His tests are fairly easy if you study hard! Definitely recommend!!
Very good at teaching much of the material in the course, and is entertaining. Thorough reading of the textbook chapters raises your marks on tests by about 25 percent, so they are a must.
Interesting class but exams can be a bit tricky! Overall he's a great prof!
Just the best!
My Favorite teacher! Love him!!
I love Martin! I've had both him and Jeff. Jeff was great, but NO comparison to Martin. Best prof EVER!
very friendly :)
Class mandatory for clicker points except Friday's were video fridays. Friday's were testable so I should have gone to those...haha. I found the exams really hard. Use the textbook and the study guide. He's funny and has passion for psychology which made the course a bit more interesting but the course itself is a bit dry. Not bad for an intro cour
Very passionate about the topic, but demands A LOT of his students. Makes you do a ton of work for very small portions of your mark. Assigns so much work that he doesn't have time to mark it all and you're left with little to no feedback as to how to improve over the course of the term. Very very high maintenance course.
BEST PROF EVER He is amazing and so passionate and cares about his students. I took all of his classes even though they were not program requirements. SO GOOD!
Smith is pretty good. Don't expect this class to be a breeze. I took this class as an easy elective but I was very wrong about the 'easy' part. Smith is engaging in his lectures. I went to talk to him in his office hours but he was rather rude. He seems nice in lecture but in person, he was surprisingly unhelpful. perhaps, he was having a bad day.
Very interactive, fun class to attend. He does like it when you pre-read for the lecture, however if you don't want to, just don't raise your hand in class. Dr. Smith is always happy to receive questions after class or during office hours and is very amiable when doing so, one of my favourite profs in psyc.
Dr. Smith is extremely kind and helpful. He tries very hard to engage students, and will likely memorize your name before the term is over. In 320, class discussions are dull at times, but the material is very interesting. Tests are not the easiest, but make an effort and you can do well. I strongly recommend Dr. Smith as a prof.
Awesome guy
gives you way to much work to do and tries to engage you by giving a lot of homework but doesn't work. most people just find it irrelevant
Apparently, the other instructor for 100A (Jeff Niehaus) is awesome. Not so much for Smith. Exams were so hard I'd say they were unfair. Practice quizzes do nothing to help you prepare, you need to know the ins and outs of the text. Extra credit available though - bonus 5% for research participation, and 3% just for showing up and using iClicker.
I got all 73-83 on my exams and felt they were pretty fair. The quizzes don't help prepare you but they're worth 15% so it helps you're grade. You don't have to go to class except fridays because everything else is in the textbook. His lectures are boring but if you do the readings and study it's an easy B. Plus you can get research bonus marks.
Extremely nice, and obviously wants you to succeed. Puts up with stupid questions very patiently. DEFINITELY USE THE TEXTBOOK, take text notes as well as lecture notes. Dr. Smith makes it extremely clear what will contribute to a good grade, including coming to lecture!
I believe you would need to have an interest in the content in order to like the course but if you do you'll love it. Martin was very clear about what would be on the tests and what to study. You can tell he really cares about the subject and seems experienced in teaching lecture (which I thought were really fun). Awesome Prof
Great prof. And his good looks are extra motivation to attend lectures.
A good teacher, clear and easy to understand. Very nice and flexible as well, tries his best to make sure his students do well.
Extremely clear and helpful Prof. Really enthusiastic and happy about the content and teaching. Lots of opportunities to do well in this course, lots of online content (assignments, quizzes, forums etc) but it really helps in understanding the concepts, good use of Moodle and PsychPortal.
Smith is truly one of the all-star profs at UVic! Not only is he an effective lecturer, you can tell he really enjoys teaching and I never got bored in his class. Now that Niehaus is leaving, there's no debate as to who to choose for intro Psyc courses. 100B's an easy course and with psyc returning to standard grading, it just got 5% easier!
Great prof. His research involves studying how students learn best, so the material is well presented and the lectures are interesting. You could get by without attending the lectures since he puts the notes online, but I still found them worthwhile.
Not a fan... I found that he often used examples that were more shocking and attention-grabbing than relevant. Nice guy to talk to and very approachable, but has a really weird teaching style. No time to take notes in class and doesn't give out pre-lecture notes. Found his class really tough to learn from.
NOT an easy A course. Great thing is there is no final. 3 midterms all multiple choice q's. WARNING: You need to know ALL details from the textbook to do well. Practice questions online are no help because midterm q's are more difficult. Online quizzes are easy A. Finally..YOU MUST SEEK TA HELP IF YOU WANT GOOD MARKS ON YOUR FORUMS!!!!
He's a super nice teacher, tries to make the lectures interesting. Always willing to lend a hand and has a passion for evolutionary psych. Ask him about it to get on his good side! Hard marker but amusing.
Very good prof. I found him very helpful and he is very passionate about what he is teaching. He has a good sense of humor too, which really helps. I would definitely recommend him.
May have had the most frustrating experience with Smith in my entire university career, He ruined interest in my favourite subject. Exam grades are kept low because of INCREDIBLY poorly written questions and questions often do not actually reflect knowledge of subject. Long answer marks rely on # of references (expected 4+). Good lecturer however.
Not a fan AT ALL. His lectures were not interesting at all. Most of the time he just ended up showing videos of irrelevant subjects so he wouldn't have to teach. His exams were terribly hard. I did great in my other psychology class, but I barely passed with him being my prof. Definitely do not recommend him.
An amazing professor with a lot of knowledge and passion for psychology, teaching and topics. Definitely worth having him as a lecturer!
As far as electives go, I'd probably steer clear of this one. Not a difficult class by any means, just not very interesting. Smith seems to take teaching this class very seriously even though the class can largely be boiled down to putting names on common sense concepts. Most of the testable material comes from long winded textbook readings.
As long as you complete the textbook readings and stay on top of the material it is not a hard course
He is such a nice professor
Martin Smith was such a nice guy! His Psych 100A relied heavily on the text book. Smith organized the course perfectly for the students throughout the semester to ensure that there was no cramming at the end. The course was not hard, but definitely required a lot of time. Must know your way around moodle well !
He is rather interesting, and I think he deserves a little more respect. All in all a great course, he tries to push a real big class into studying. I didnt study as much as I had to, all I did was the quizzes and some forums and stuff. However, considering the effort I put in, I guess it wasn't hard. A very...motivational prof !
Definitely increased my interest in the subject. He has a great sense of humour and makes lectures interesting and fun, exams are fair (although are heavily based on the text) but his lectures clarify concepts. I would recommend taking psych with him!
Martin is a really great prof, however entry level psych has so much information to go through he relies heavily on the textbook - he doesn't tell you to read things for no reason! Tests are fair but based mostly on the text so be prepared for that! He goes over a lot in lecture and has a very interactive class.
Class overall is easy, his tests however are worded strangely and I find it hard to understand what he's asking.I am deeply interested in Psych and I feel that Smith will give you a bad/amateur impression of the subject.Topics are still interesting but the lectures are boring because he lacks passion/connection.Reminds me of a high school teacher.
interesting course, boring lectures.. tests are worded really difficult and is hard to study for.. relies TOO heavily on textbook readings, too many online submissions. hard to keep up.
I loved him as a prof! He tries his hardest to make the lectures interesting (in a 300 person class) and has a good sense of humour. Tests are always harder than the quizzes, relies completely on textbook so make sure to read it!
LOVE HIM!! Just an all-around brilliant prof. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Lectures were fun and interesting and as long as you put in the effort you'll get an A.
I'm sure he's a nice guy but this class was basically like taking correspondence. Lectures are not testable material and totally unhelpful. Not hard to get a good mark but you have to teach the material to yourself.
Dr Smiths class inspired me to take psychology. He is very entertaining, and is willing to walk through the material with you during office hours. Big tip: Read the psyc chapters. It is a lot of reading, but his tests and lectures are heavily based on the reading material. The rest is the movies you'll see on Friday, or the case studies.
I took 100A with a different prof and had pretty much decided I wasn't a fan on pysc, but unfortunately had to take 100B for my program. I found Martin to be enthusiastic, entertaining, and incredibly helpful! His tests are primarily based on the text which is luckily not painful to read. I would definitely recommend him!
Martin is enthusiastic about teaching but you must teach this course to yourself because most of the material in the exam is not covered in class (only 20-25% covered in class). I also hated how he came to the back of the class every day to ask questions and would make people talk into the mic! Easy course, nice guy, but not a great class.
Clear teching, and obviously loves what he does, but it is not mandatory at all to come to class, and doesn't do much more to help your grade than just reading the text would.
One of the more difficult courses I've taken. Workload was unreasonable. And I'm not a slacker whining. I got an A but boy did I have to work for it! You have to take notes on every inch of the text. He gave 25 potential long answer questions. Waaay too many! You answer 2/3 on test. I loved his enthusiasm. Lectures weren't helpful, mark-wise.
Most lectures were entertaining. Other than iClicker pts, attending lecture really IS NOT mandatory. The course is heavily textbook based (which is an easy read, just tedious at times). One test /40 would probably include 5 questions where you had to be in lecture to answer. Put in effort and you'll walk out with an easy A.
Dr. Smith is very passionate about his work and his students. He is quick to reply to emails and very helpful. He is a very down to earth, warm, friendly professor and makes learning a lot of fun!
Smith will spent at least the first 1/3 of the class going over 'house-keeping' items. Takes a long time to respond to emails. exams are purely based on text book, his lectures are slow, and feels like he never ends up saying much. Just ask for class opinion and does some clicker questions. seems like a nice guy, but not great prof.
Really disorganized/scatter brained. You will have to rely heavily on the text book. You'll also have to invest far more of your personal (mental and emotional) resources to compensate for his lack of "umph". He doesn't meet you half way, rather he expects you to come to him. Learning isn't "dyadic" he supplies no reference points to build on.
I had an overall great experience with Dr Smith. He is extremely knowledgeable in the area, and adds some humor to every lecture. Attending the class is really not mandatory in order to get a good grade, but I always did as his lectures are fascinating, entertaining and engaging. Put in a few hours a week and an A shouldn't be a stretch.
Overall he is a decent prof. The only reason attending class is necessary is for the videos and for clicker points. He covers all material that is found in the text. His marking system is fair and is helpful for keeping on top of the material. I find that he is not clear when answering student questions and falls flat engaging them.
Smith is an awkward lecturer. He asks the class to ask questions that he doesn't answer and says that they will come up in the slides. You have to read through the text with a fine tooth comb for the exams because only a small portion of the exam is actually material covered in class. Therefore, you must teach yourself all the course content.
Tests are based 100% off the textbook, but you have togo to class to answer the iClicker questions. The textbook is hard to learn from, and the midterms were very specific to dates, specific studies, etc. from the text. Not at all enjoyable, avoid if at all possible.
seems liek he would probably be a good dad...like a nice guy but AWFUL professor, the exam questions were SO trivial asking about specific dates and such avoid at all costs tbh
Legit read the book, and then read it again. Don't pay too much attention to the slides and you will get an easy A+.
Martin is my FAV teacher! Lots of ways to boost your mark and because of the amount of assignments it was impossible to do poorly on the exams. He makes the content so much more interesting and easy to understand
Very good conversationalist, he is interesting to listen to in class but he takes a long time to actually get into the lecture. If you need help do not bother going to him for he will just say you are wasting his time. Exams are composed of 3 parts MC,SA,EQ,his esaay portion requires you to do 2 essays along with the other 2 parts in 1h and 20mins.
Found his lectures interesting, great professor. Found the test questions difficult to understand, even with attending all lectures and reading.
I enjoyed ev-psyc but DO NOT take personality with him. Almost nothing relevant was taught in class, the textbook was dreadful and the tests were unnecessarily difficult. He is a nice guy but his teaching style needs a renovation.
Amazing professor! Cannot say enough about this man. Wonderful lecturer, very interesting to listen to, and absolutely loves what he does. Classes are so unique in that they're discussion based! This means that you talk with each other and Martin all class! Truly amazing and rewarding class for anybody who is willing to attend class and read a bit.
Worst prof I have ever had. Wastes the first 20minutes of class every day. Makes tests ridiculously hard but teaches you nothing.
Absolutely horrible professor. Shows up late for every class, is disorganized, and then spends the remainder of class talking about totally irrelevant material. Tests are too hard and based entirely on the textbook which he never bothers to cover in class. The only point going to class is for the clicker points, but it's hard to sit through.
First off, he seems like a genuinely nice guy. Academically, he's a great first-year professor, but you *will* be bored in Psyc 100 if you aren't interested in Psyc. This isn't Anthropology or Art.
Martin lectured on basic material like simple definitions, but when it came midterm time his questions were annoying. The only reason I came to class was to get clicker points, as I can read a definition out of the textbook myself. He isn't engaging and doesn't seem like he wants to be there, would NOT recommend. He is also almost always late too
I thought Smith was a fantastic prof. I had him for both 100A and 100B. He is very passionate about teaching and it shows during his lectures. Be sure to read the textbook carefully for exams. Lots of opportunities to boost your grade for this class. I would recommend this class as an easy elective.
I emailed him 3 times this past semester and asked him about different things related to the course and assignments, but he did not reply to any of them. the exams are ONLY from the textbook, and he does not really teach in the class. it's like a group discussion type of class. HE DOESN'T TEACH!
So far the best prof i've had.. loved his class and its really hard to do badly as he makes it pretty clear whats needed to know. Mostly from text and the rest you can find from his slides. Has chances to raise your marks such as quizzes and forums!
Lectures are drawn out and worthless, only reason to go is the iClicker. Midterm is 100% text MC, and typically obscure study dates, results from studies or specific theories from individual people. Great class if you want to memorize and regurgitate chapters. Horrible if you want to learn anything.
If you are willing to put the work in, this is a good elective class. Smith is funny, clear and created the course so that you did more in the beginning and less at the end with no final. He offered extra credit up to 5%, showed videos every Friday and all of the slides were posted online. All of the assignments were also clear and pretty easy.
We have online forums and quizzes every week. The quizzes are easy, but the exams are the total opposite. He usually spends the first 5-10 minutes to talk about irrelevant stuffs, and barely teaches us anything in the lectures. We have to read a lot for this course. However, the textbook is interesting!
Be prepared to read 30-50 pages every week for online quizzes. Also be ready to apply your knowledge when it comes to writing online forums every week or every other week. His lectures are basically restating what you read in the textbook. Quizzes are easy but the tests you really need to study for, or at least highly pay attention in class.
Majority of the class was group discussion, which was fun but not very helpful for succeeding on tests. If you want to do well on tests, memorize the textbook.
Very intelligent professor, but too tough for a first-year student to understand. Super hard tests, average in the class ranged form 50 to 60.
DO. THE. EXTRA. RESEARCH. PARTICIPATION. Every bit helps, and 5% can be an entire letter grade. His classes are big, his exams are tough, and you need to know the material COLD. Read the text and take concise notes. He's very smart, and he knows what he's talking about. SO, LISTEN. (And put your phones away.)
I took this course with Martin and from the beginning it is made out to be a fairly fun and engaging course. Lectures consist of the first ten minutes talking because he has not arrived followed by group discussion and review of what was on the online quiz prior to lecture. Multiple choice q's are hard - a lot of work required for essay portion.
martins course seems easy enough.. you read the textbook, you study, you hope to get a good grade. unfortunately I did these things and the tests were seemingly impossible as I ended up getting one of my worsts grades in this class and it was my elective course. I do not recommend taking classes with martin.
way too hard for an elective class, his exams are brutal
you have to read the text book and write online quizzes before he has taught the material. Brutal for a first year class. the first exam is worth more than the last and the MC questions are on pointless stuff you wouldn't think to study.
Was really looking forward to this class, then realized it was all reading all the time. All he does is go over the material you have already read (Word for word). Quite a painful lecture to sit through.
DO NOT TAKE HIS 320 CLASS!! I've taken classes with Martin before and I really enjoyed it and did well so i thought I would take another (320). BIGGEST MISTAKE. Marking is absolutely ridiculous, if you want a good grade you're going to have to work your ass off for it and it will probably just be a B. if you're lucky. fair assignments though.
Lectures are very long, I only go to them because the course takes iclicker points. The exams are all multiple choice but are brutal if you don't study enough.
Martin is very passionate about psychology and his lectures are interesting...(just a few dry ones). Do not take this class if you aren't willing to put time in!!! be prepared to write forums and quizzes every week ish. Also, do not fall behind on the readings. This is NOT an easy course but Martin is a great prof!
His lectures are pretty light. You need to complete quizzes and write up assignments weekly, but his lectures are relaxing and quite a pleasure. Shows a lot of informative videos and interacts with students by asking questions and using I-Clickers (for marks; show up!). His classes are more of a discussion.
Test are really hard. I made the mistake of taking this course as an elective. I would not recommend taking this course as an elective
Did not enjoy psyc 100 A with Martin !
Worst professor by far. Please do not take any classes with him. He is the worst. I read so many comments and thought it was okay to take a class with him. But oh no. He is a nightmare! To be honest, he is a lovely person but a horrible teacher and never there to help. If you are in that class, do not expect any help.
Martin is a funny guy, he keeps lectures interesting. I really enjoyed this class. Overall there is a lot of reading to do for this class as every week you are required to read a chapter and do an online open book quiz on it. Only 3 tests all year and the final is not accumulated. The lectures are generally a review of the reading you did.
I thought the content in this class was very interesting and Martin explained it well. If you do all the assigned reading you should be able to do well on the tests and quizzes. You can also get an easy extra 5% added to your grade by volunteering in research studies. Really cool stuff and easiest class I've taken so far!!
Decent prof. You have to go to class to get your clicker points. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Martin only teaches about 25% of the material and you're expected to learn the rest. Do the research participation!!!!! you can earn up to 5% bonus on your grade. Exams are tough but online quizzes are fairly easy plus you get marks for clickers, surveys and forums.
Martin Smith is a pretty good lecturer. He sometimes passes by things pretty quickly, because you spend most of the beginning of class doing iclicker questions. He is a really nice guy though, and there are a lot of opportunities to get a good grade.
I did not enjoy the class, he was able to make the 50 minute lecture feel like 3 hours.
This course was not easy. However, if your willing to put in the time to read the textbook in detail you can do well. The exams are tough but there are other opportunities to make up the marks. Online quizzes, forums, are what can really boost your grade. I can't stress enough that you should do the research studies to earn an extra 5%!
For a 100 level course I found that his tests were very hard and for a couple reasons. His lectures tho interesting are all over the place - and the readings expected are so long. You are teaching yourself the material most of the time and don't know where to start. Still go an A - he gives you the opportunity for extra credit! STUDY THE TEXT BOOK.
I don't get Martin's teaching style for this upper level class. Given its a 300 you'd think he would actually explain and teach the material we're being tested on, especially given the tests are really hard... but no, he spends the whole lecture doing irrelevant iclicker questions. I don't think there was 1 lecture where he explained a concept...
Go to the lectures for the extra 3% in clicker points but in reality you don't have to go, you won't learn much from them that isn't in the text book. You HAVE TO read the textbook to pass.
Super nice guy, but unless you enjoy a low GPA, avoid classes with Martin. There is no structure in his lectures, they are more of a group discussion. No lecture notes or slides provided. No clear expectations on assignments. Tests are difficult to study for, class average is 68%.
Feels like a set up for failure. Smith likes to slam you with back to back midterms, assignments, and online quizzes. Get ready to read endless chapters and memorize too many terms for insanely tough tests. Lectures include NO clarification of course content. Get set to teach yourself the content.
Worst class ever. I am going to leave this class having learnt nothing. Expectations in this class for students is too great for the amount of work the professor puts in. Be prepared to read the textbook and teach yourself because the lectures are the least bit helpful. The term paper is outlandish with unrealistic expectations.
Wouldn't even call his lectures "lectures". No point in going besides the clicker points. You're on your own for learning the material. Exams hold unrealistic expectations with over 60 terms to memorize and 20-25 essay questions to study when he only includes 2 on the exam. Disappointing. This could have been a great class taught by someone else.
Martin's teaching style for this class is disappointing. Lectures are not lectures, they are group discussions. The only motivation to attend class is to receive iClicker marks. Exams set unrealistic expectations for students.
Really enjoyed the textbook material as the majority of it has real world application. However, the lectures are non-informative, and do not even feel like lectures. You're on your own for learning the material as the lectures are useless to go to despite the 3% for iClicker participation. Exams require you to know 25 essay questions and write 2.
Martin arrived late to many lectures and often talked about subjects unrelated to the lecture topics. The only reason I went to lectures was for iClicker points. You have to teach yourself everything from the textbook and readings were very long. Exams were tough; seemed like he used the thesaurus on every word. Did not like this class at all
Treats in class lectures as a joke strictly expects all learning to be down solo. I didnt pay $550 to listen to you ramble
Only go to class for the iclicker points. Lectures are often off topic and unrelated to the material and lots of jumping around. HAVE to have the textbook as majority of material covered is not covered in lecture. Lots of little assignments unrelated to the course. Wouldn't recommend unless needed
Very approachable and friendly. Loves group discussions and engaging students. Only negatives - lectures a bit disorganized and scattered (like him), and you have to read the textbook cover-to-cover outside of class in order to do well on exams. I love Dr. Smith and would definitely recommend taking an upper-level psychology class with him.
Here's the thing. From a personal stand point, he's a super approachable and likeable person, which is awesome. However, in class we rarely learn, and he quizzes on chapter that aren't covered until a few days, even weeks, later. Be ready to teach yourself most of the course, and if possible take it with someone else. Huge fan of him personally tho
Martin has been late to nearly every single lecture this term. He rambles during lectures and expects the students to learn nearly everything from the textbook. Signing up for this class with him is essentially paying $550 for the chance to read a textbook and get tested on it. His tests are fair.
Martin's lectures were fairly useless, you can pretty much get most of the information from the book; however, students are forced to attend with mandatory "clicker" questions which can only be completed in class. He's by no means horrible, you get a decent understanding of course material, but it can also not be said that i was overly amazed.
Funny guy that tries to engage the class.
Smith often gets sidetracked and shows up late to class which makes it difficult to learn anything. The course exams are mostly from the textbook so its mandatory to understand anything, as well there are many weekly quizzes and forums. Attendance (iClickers) only make up a small percentage and Friday's don't have clicker questions.
quiz is always ahead of class so I don't really know why should I go to classes because if I wanna get a better score, I only need to read textbook and that's enough.
I signed up for this class thinking I wasn't going to like it because it isn't really my thing but Martin made me love psych and he was a great prof. Didn't get the best grade because I'm lazy but 10/10 would take it again.
Martin is not nessecarily a great professor. Although an extremely interesting class he makes it seem he is rushing through everything. He is also very vague about how to study for the exams and puts a lot of pressure on you to figure it out yourself. He gives a lot of opportunity to bump up your grades though so it is an easy pass.
So many things to do: surveys, quizzes, forums, etc. Lecture slides were literally pictures from the text lol but not too hard of a class
I took this class as an option. I did quite well because I independently read the textbook. His tests were manageable, but his lectures covered only about 1/4 of the material that was going to be tested. He went into depth in areas that, although interesting, did not apply to the course.
Martin was usually late for class and wouldn't start until 10 minutes in. Not a whole lot of value in the lecture make sure you read the textbook. Exam questions were heavily worded but very manageable if you know the material.
Such a bad prof, totally avoid, hes a bad marker and has so many assignments, you will have a quiz, forum and midterm all in one week. You have to to tests and quizes on stuff before hes gone over it, you will be reading chapter 6 studying for the midterm and be doing chapter 4 in class at the same time
This man is a great teacher. Although his classes are large (200+ people), he somehow finds a way to make himself personable. He is very encouraging. If you take his class, don't be afraid to answer questions out loud. This man really deserves the best. And those blue eyes...
LOVED HIM. Knows what he's talking about. Talks with passion. Is a bit disorganized.. oh and if you miss his class you won't pass. Really interesting class. By no means an easy one.
I wasn't a huge fan of Dr. Smith or the class. He's a nice guy and obviously cares about his students, but I found that the only thing motivating me to go to class was iclicker points. The course is very general and was covered in an even more superficial way in class.
forums were difficult and unfairly marked, tests were odd and on pointless aspects of the texts rather on the actual important material, would always keep class late since he started class late, off topic, only motivator was the 3% for the iclicker participation
Course was structured in a way that sets you up for success (research bonus, forums, etc.), do the work and you're in for an easy A. Martin will waste your time. Get ready to hear about the books he is writing and be prepared for his infamous "Don't pack up early." Will waste your time and show up late every single day. Exams were fair.
Late if he decided to actually show up to class. The only thing he did was get TAs to show videos. The few times I did see him he was extremely rude and even embarrassed a student in front of the entire lecture for going to the washroom.
most difficult class I have ever taken, and you WILL need the textbook, it's your best friend. Exams are all textbook material, hard, and harshly marked. Lectures are utterly useless. He talks about the book he's writing and completely irrelevant material...I only went for the 3% clicker points. Would not recommend Martin.
Get ready to teach yourself! Or even the whole class as Martin will not be teaching you anything, he truly does not care!
Pretty much taught myself this course. Lectures generally a waste of time. Tests can be fair, but multiple choice might catch you off guard. Projects had potential but guidelines needlessly difficult. Unfortunate, cause he seems like a nice guy. If you don't get the text, you won't pass.
Lectures were basically useless, you learnt nothing by going to them. Iclickers made you want to show up to though because lord knows you're going to need the extra 3% bonus at the end. This was the hardest I have ever worked for so little in return. I spent 18+ hours a week studying and reading for this class. By the end I gave up on this class.
To reiterate the other negative comments: late every class, unprepared, and gives lectures that have very little to do with the exams, AND the exams are the hardest I've ever encountered. You have to memorize every detail from the text without any support from him. Doesn't bother answering questions about text content if you need clarification.
If I wasn't so concerned with learning the material I would probably enjoy his lectures more. Last class he gave us a 5 min brake in a 80 min lecture, messed up both the videos he lined up and let us go 10 min early. there was no material he covered in lecture that couldn't be found in the text book. Hes a funny guy though.
Very unclear, lectures are hard to follow and irrelevant to exams. Slides are online, but are pointless to look at. All of the exam material comes directly from the textbook, so going to class is a massive waste of time. He comes across as very unprofessional, is usually late, and uses lecture time to chat with students.
His lectures seem unorganized and thrown together, and he does not cover a lot of course material. His tests are incredibly difficult and have a lot of ambiguous questions that lack content validity. Get used to memorizing the textbook, and even so, be prepared to feel blindsided with some of the questions he asks on his exams. Not an easy A!
Lectures and course content are are interesting but he doesnt get started until 10-15 minutes after class begins so a lot of time is wasted. Test questions are obscure concepts from the book and he asks about specific research and people involved. Grades are returned maybe two weeks after evaluation.
He tests 80% from textbook and 20% from lecture slides. But he tells you that and all his lecture slides that he is going to ask questions on are highlighted. Its pretty easy tests if you read the textbook and highlighted slides that he posts. Overall, going to class is not mandatory to get a good grade.
I took his Summer intensive course and let me tell you, the tests are awful. I calculated & in a 2hr long lecture we cover 5/40 pages of 1 chapter, you go home and spend 5 hours learning the rest. Tests are '80% textbook 20% lectures.' his questioned are so complexly worded w/ mostly examples not terms. Not even tested on facts just association.
I have taken psyc 100a/b and psyc 243 with martin and he is my favourite psychology professor. his lectures are super interesting and he is such an awesome dude! very nice and so smart. that being said, his classes are a bit of work. if you read the textbook and take detailed notes on each chapter and attend class you'll get an A+ but be prepared
If you like Ross from Friends, youll love hearing Dr. Martin talk. If you dont, youre in for a very dry lecture. While the lectures arent very engaging, he cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed, which I personally enjoyed from him. Youre marked on both class forums and tests so the textbook is essential.
