Can't handle his classes, feeling like I am really behind. Can't understand what he is saying. Doesn't realize that the students he is teaching are actually undergraduates
Material all over the place, very tough. Pop quizzes in this class (3) actually make me cry. He thinks we are all only taking one class. Hope you have time to read 3 papers per lecture!
So the final wasn't so bad but his midterm paper wasn't. You actually have to go through all the papers he recommends you to read (which isn't an easy task). Hard to comprehend what he is saying, probably because he is assuming that we are graduates as he does teach graduates in other classes. Anyways, not recommended if you are targetting for A.
I don't understand the complaints about this guy. Always available to help whenever I e-mailed him. Comprehensive on-line notes with supplementary papers that were not tested on at all. His in-class quizzes require about half an hour of review every other weekend for a free 5%. The assignment was a little tough, but his final was very fair.
Went through his slides very fast. Assigns a the midterm paper with two weeks to finish it in the middle of everyone's midterms, and expects us to finish it as if its the only class we have. Doesn't really help his students, but rather makes them feel worse about their low marks from hard exam questions by saying "its because you didn't study."
Hard class- only take it if you are actually interested in Genetics, do not take it if you are a general sciences wanting to get into med school. You have to have a full concept of the class to do decently and to understand him- take your own notes, his are not sufficient. Pay attention and study lots for the exam- it's long!
Yes, the class was hard, but Dr. Srayko was happy to answer questions either in person or via email. This is a third year genetics course, so we definitely had to apply some of the concepts we'd learned in class, which might be difficult to do if you're used to memorizing but not understanding facts for premed courses.
He is a great guy, always available. Very fascinating material and yes, Phil the TA is a bit tough with grading but you can always make it work by putting enough effort. Overall, i love the class and wish to take more genetics classes with Martin.
If you actually show up and try, it's not that bad. Good speaker, fair marker.
Dr. Syrako is a great guy. He explains concepts as best as possible and is very helpful and accessible in his office hours. His notes have lots of information, so the course isn't exactly a breeze, but he does his best to help out his students.
Martin is a good prof who is very knowledgable about what he is talking about. He genuinely cares about his students performance and will test you daily. I have to dozed off every once in a while because he can have a monotone delivery at times, but other than that he's good. Its not an easy class but if you try you'll do well.
He's a really cool guy with a sick ponytail. His notes are pretty detailed but I suggest writing some extra notes on the side and keep aware of things he puts emphasis on. His exams really get you on those small details and I noticed he really goes in depth with the topics in his lectures so my best advice is to thoroughly know the content.
He's a very good prof but most of the time I just wanted to sleep in his class. He talks in a monotone voice and his notes are detailed but still somewhat lacking on certain processes discussed in class. He tries to be funny too but it is bio, the content is pretty dry.
Dr Srayko was super accessible outside of class. He always made time for appointments even at times that would be inconvenient for him; he was always willing to help. His notes are detailed and good, but there is honestly a lot of material in them. His exams are fair, so just study and you will be fine.
Lectures with Srayko were great. What sucked was the 107 labs! The lab exam was horrendous (average of 51%?!)! The lab coordinator is a meanie and makes a disgusting lab exam!! Srayko saved my mark. His exams were really good and it was easy to get 100 for participation (you just had to go to most of the lectures). Would recommend this guy
Srayko is a pretty solid prof. Class was a bit slow though because he can be a bit monotone and the material itself wasn't most interesting. For the most part though, Srayko did a great job explaining the concepts in class and incorporating interesting and relevant videos and other examples. Exams were challenging too, some obscure concepts came up
Martin nsrayko is a very respectful nice professor. I do not understand all these comments about how he is tough grader. HIS EXAM WAS SO FAIR. i never attended class and his NOTES WERE LIFE. he included every single information on his powerpoint that came on his exam. the only hard things were its a biology class so lots of material and the lab.
Martin was great! Super clear and detailed notes to go along with excellent explanations. Replies to emails promptly and goes above and beyond to meet students outside of the class to help them understand the material.
Martin is a great prof. He knows his material. This is exactly what I enjoy and having him was the best choice. He is super nice and answers any questions. Participation is easy, show up and answer the questions. Be there for 18/21 lectures that count. I highly recommend him.
Hardest exams in the world
Dr. Srayko is a great prof. If you memorize his notes (which is no small feat), you will do well, no need for the textbook. He responds to emails promptly and with detail. There is a ton of material to know, but mostly flashcard level knowledge. His notes are works of art.
Overall an okay prof. Notes are amazing but teaching itself is not bc he can be monotone. Outside of class he is very nice and caring + replies to emails promptly. Id take him if you're good with teaching yourself the material (textbook not needed)
His notes are amazing and no need for textbook. He knows whats he teaching so the tests are hard and require a decent understanding of the materials. Redrawing the diagrams might be helpful for this class.
A fantastic prof for anyone entering into biology as well as someone who is experienced in the course. He very clearly puts effort into his lectures, and is very easy to talk to both in and outside of class. Although he may be awkward at times, his advice and personality all come from a very good place.
Starts off semester ok, but as the course goes on he throws 60 page lectures into 50 min classes & rushes through everything. He doesn't give practice questions or exams and doesn't give an outline of what the important topics to study are. He throws in a lot of useless info into his lectures but won't tell you what's important. He sucks.
His lectures are a bit dry but he does give you a 5 minute break which I think is quite nice! He is encourages participation for marks by asking ePoll questions but he doesn't grade you on if you got the answer correct or not which is a bonus imo. His midterm was difficult but if you work for it the curve should carry u the rest of the way lol
It doesn't get better. It straightforward. VERY NICE lecture notes! 10/10
He is very knowledgeable prof. For the midterm, you have to memorize all the notes. Took the final during Covid 19- he made it harder with more application rather than memorization (short answer was brutal). He plays guitar loll
Dr. Srayko has really great lecture notes and explains things well. He is very accessible through email and responds promptly and with great detail.
Martin had clear, interesting lectures, and detailed slides. I found his midterm pretty difficult; you will want to really study up on every detail, but he listens to his students, and has their best interest at heart.
Dr. Srayko explains things very clearly! His exams are very fair, and require a thorough understanding of his notes.
Professor Srayko was terrific! I never payed a lot of attention in class but his slides were clear as crystal and helped me make good notes. He's a really sweet guy too.
Good prof. Fair tests. Know material inside and out for exams. His explanation are usually clear and straight forward. Highly recommend.
Absolutely a good guy. This course is definantly hard, especially near the end where it feels like a ton of info is being thrown at you - the lectures also seem a bit crammed here, but he has pretty decent notes, and makes alot of points what u you need to know - just be conscious of what he makes notes of and put in the effort. His exams are fair
BIOL 107 with Dr. Srayko is one of the most organized classes I have taken this semester and he adapted well to the online environment. You do not need a textbook (it only further solidifies the content). He very quickly adjusted to eClass crashing during our final exam. His exams are fair if you make sure to study everything from the lectures.
10 out of freaking 10! His lecture slides were content heavy but as long as you pay attention to his lectures you're golden. Make sure you write down examples he gives that aren't included in his lecture note because he likes to ask really specific questions on exams. He also does a really good job at explaining things during office hours.
Srayko had the best structured online course I have taken this semester. His lectures were very informative and thorough, although they were content-heavy. The lecture slides he gives are very in-depth! His intros and outros during the lectures were always something I never skipped too! The exams were difficult, but fair if you reviewed properly.
Great prof, the lectures are very detailed and enjoyable. The midterm and the final were fairly challenging but not unfair. Very organized and well-structured
AMAZING professor. His lectures were content heavy but he explained everything in a lot of detail! His lectures were all asynchronous and had very enjoyable intros and outros, as well as some fun edits in the middle :)
Loved Skrayko. As long as you study his lecture slides quizzes are super easy and final and midterm were both very similar to quiz questions and fairly easy.
The test was hard, need to put lots of effort in. The prof uploaded couple recorded video on eClass every week, and make sure you plan ahead and give time to watch it!! Do not procrastinate!!
He has great asynchronous lecture videos as well as the slides to annotate as you watch. He does not provide practice questions and the exams are fairly challenging as you have to know every detail from his videos. The class overall was quite challenging but he was a great person and was very good with answering emails.
Dr Srayko was a fantastic professor online. His videos were amazing, he really took the time to perfect them. If there was every any concern, he was always good with answering emails and booking appointments. However, the course material was pretty difficult. Make sure you really read in between the lines of his lectures, and study every detail.
The tests in this class were very difficult. Be prepared to memorize every little details from the lectures. I felt as though the lectures jumped all over the place. We had no live sessions, just recorded lectures.
The exams and quizzes in this class were difficult. You need to memorize and know every little detail from the asynchronous lectures. I felt as though the lectures jumped all over the place. We only have live office hours other than that it all on you. Takes a long time to answer email, sometimes he doesn't answer.
Don't know why ppl say it's a lot of work & info. It's a bio course; obviously you'll have to put in the effort & study details. Srayko is AMAZING! He was so nice & helpful. He answered all emails & worked hard to ensure we got the concepts. His lectures (asynchronous) were fun & informative. Tested off of lectures only. Exams were tough but fair.
Hilarious prof. You can tell he tries his best to help students understand concepts and makes asynchronous lectures interesting. Be prepared for LOTS of memorization, as even little side notes were tested on. Definitely a class I had to put a lot of time and work into, but also a very rewarding class.
Tests are so fair
Dr. Srayko is very knowledgeable and answers any and every question during office hours. Tests are really detailed and specific so memorization and understanding are key. Lectures were asynchronous (during my time, not sure now) so make sure to keep up with them or else its too overwhelming. Lots of practice and review and the class should be okay!
His lecture is a bit dry and boring, lecture heavy. Tests are so hard
not a great professor. Gave an extra week of lecture content on the midterm a couple of days in advance which is not fair then wonders why the class average was so low. The midterm was also not curved so everyone was hurt by this. he does not include all slides of his lectures in his notes and tests you on things he mentions once verbally only
He's nice, but his lectures are almost useless. I had to use the "recommended" (should have been required) textbook to teach myself the material because his lectures didn't relate to a lot of the quizzes. If you do a lot of learning on your own time, it's a bearable class.
His lectures were pretty boring and I had a hard time not falling asleep. Ended up having to read the textbook basically teach myself. This class is content heavy but work hard and youll be fine. Also the bio lab is worth 40% of your mark and I found it easy to do good in which is why grades are good in the class.
Lab was the only good part of the class bc it wasn't administered by him. Just read the slides, minimal explanations. Had a bad attitude, like he was doing the class a favour by teaching us, sir its your job. The test were weighted heavily and detailed, and for what? I would NOT recommend this class unless you have previous knowledg on the subject.
Horrible!! Bad start to my studies in biology. He doesn't explain anything. I stopped going to class because he only reads the slides. Boring lecturer, If you care about your mental health don't take this class because it is quite literally a shattering depiction of human suffering, you will suffer. Take great care and proceed with caution.
His lectures were fairly interesting, but if you miss a lecture make sure to get notes for it because he bases his exams off lectures and things mentioned in class. For some reason, his class wasn't curved despite all the other BIOL 107 classes being graded on a curve? Overall nice, but some of his explainations of concepts were confusing.
I found that he was really nice and well spoken, however, his lectures were very shallow and didnt provide much explanation to concepts that were heavily tested on. Tests are very VERY difficult, I was taken by surprise as I didnt find content hard but struggled a lot with exams. Nice guy but wouldnt recommend as a prof for this class. Avoid.
If you take his class be prepared to PAY ATTENTION as you will get very tough questions on exams. Do not procrastinate lectures and notes! Very dull dry voice and sometimes hard to grasp what he talks about because he almost has no expression. Bio labs are what saved me. Be prepared the tests are very hard. Textbook is helpful.
Prof Srayko is very knowledgeable in his field but his lectures go by very fast and he tends to mumble. His midterms and finals are hard since Sryako tends to test on details he mentioned in class (some of which are not on the slides). Also, he didn't give practice midterms like other biol 107 profs.
This course is very memorization heavy - if you can do that, you'll be fine. He tests straight off of the notes, which are only accessible through going to class. The weekly online quizzes are difficult because they test on very precise information. Paying attention in lectures and studying daily is my best tip for this course.
He knows what he is talking about and is generally able to explain biology concepts clearly. The course is extremely memorization-based. Concepts mentioned briefly can be tested on while concepts repeatedly covered may not be tested at all. Know everything! Thankfully, his notes are very high quality, as he's put a lot of effort into making them!
Sryako has mostly clear & concise lecture slides, no textbook needed. Posted lecture slides are often slightly outdated to slides used in class. Exams are pretty brutal, testing on the most minor concepts, but it is still mostly reasonable. Many resources provided to help you study, such as quizzes and forums before exams.
A very solid prof; you can tell he genuinely cares about his students. As for the difficulty, you can expect a lot of memorization, but that's just a typical bio class. Exam questions are specific but fair.
Srayko explains concepts well. Make sure to pay attention in lecture as some of the info he speaks about is not included on the posted lecture slides. Tests were fair; anything he talks about is fair game. Lots of material as to be expected.
amazing prof, he was super thorough and you can tell he's very knowledgable about what he teaches. his tests do test a lot of small details from his slides but i think if you study quite a bit you will find it quite easy. his midterms and finals do have quite a bit of questions and not a lot of time so be prepared. great prof overall, i recommend.
Has a good sense of humor and good lecturer, but he hardly has any material to review or practice for midterms or the final. The weekly quizzes and midterm were insanely unpredictable and difficult, and if you don't memorize every single detail on all 18 of the lectures before the midterm, you will likely not pass it.
Dr. Srayko has great notes, and his lectures are really thorough in explaining concepts very clearly. He's thorough answering any questions you might have and he seems to really want his students to succeed. His midterms are fair and essentially only test off his notes - just be sure to study them really well.
As someone fresh out of high school, it was nice to have a decent prof. He only tests material that he teaches during lectures and he has quizzes every week to keep you up to date with the material. He explained things very well and was decently lively. If you pay attention in class and review your lecture notes you should do fine.
genuinely an amazing professor, the lectures are super well done and interactive!! Prof. Sryako is an excellent teacher and his class is probably my favourite out of all of the ones im currently enrolled in.
Test you on the smallest details that he goes over once in class only, purposely leaves key slides out of the 'regular posted slides' to encourage people to come and listen to him. Hes been using the same slides for like 5 years.
Dr. Srayko is one of the worst professors I've had this term. His slides are disorganized and there's no clear direction/separation between topics. It's also immensely unclear what you actually need to know for exams vs supplementary information, so you often end up memorizing the wrong information. No practice questions are given for anything.
I am not a fan. Absolutely zero lecture structure, there is no clear break between topics which makes studying very difficult. There is a large amount of unnecessary information throughout the lecture slides making the whole course a hunt for relevant information. Quizzes are non stop and he give no practice questions for exams.
He explains the topics well but he sets the exams too difficult. The questions are really detailed and honestly even the class seems a bit hard to follow. You miss one lecture and you don't understand anything. I wish his papers were a bit easier cause this is making me dislike the subject as of whole.
He's an intelligent guy; he clearly knows biology and explains it well. That is, if you can listen to him. A lot of the class is spent writing notes, so it's hard to write and listen at the same time. The quizzes and midterm are very difficult; you're tested on the most minute of details. Good guy but I wouldn't take another class with him
Dr.Srayko is a caring prof. Lectures r mandatory, don't take his classes on fridays if you skip. His lectures are full of information + can be hard to follow. He shows videos + animations which makes the lectures more enjoyable. Epoll is also used and helps w/ paying attention. Quizzes are weekly, and you are given 2 to do, 2 days before the final.
Super content heavy, impossible to stay ahead. Lecture slides and diagrams were confusing, topics were mixed up and was hard to understand.
He is pretty average in my opinion, very lecture heavy and participation does matter. I wouldn't say he is terrible but his online quizzes were a bit on the tougher side. I would probably take him again but he does tend to just read off the slides a bit.
Least favourite class this semester, no clear distinction between subjects - felt like a run on sentence which makes studying very difficult. He's knowledgable in what he teaches but includes random details so it's hard to know what to study for. Midterm and final felt like a slap in the face. He's a nice guy but I wouldn't take his class again.
Dr. Srayko is a kind and patient professor and responds quick to emails. His lectures are extremely detailed and he tests on small concepts and details he verbally goes over. His lectures are also a little dry so be ready to study and put a lot of time and effort to do well in his class. He provides very limited resources for exam preparation.
He is a nice professor and is genuinely interested in what he teaches. However, as the other commentators have stated, he tests particular concepts as part of processes. If you value your GPA here don't just use flashcards, know every molecule in every chain in every reaction as part of a process.
Anyone who thinks its normal to have mandatory attendance for university lecture is crazy. This is not high school. No exam prep whatsoever, get ready to memorize the most random little facts. Ask him what topic is important, he will say every bit of information is important.
Dr. Srayko is a wonderful professor. He is always accessible outside of class if you need help and is very knowledgeable about the material that is taught. Memorization is very important to do well on exams so make sure you are solid with that and you should be fine.
He is a really knowledgeable and good prof with a clear grading scheme, USE TEXTBOOK, IT HELPS A LOT. It's not his fault that the course is memorization based, justcwork hard and you'll do alright plus Dr. Starchuk (lab coordinator) is amazing and will help your overall grade to go up thanks to good labs. Attend classes and study for quizzes!!!
Overall a great prof, his lectures were very entertaining and interesting as he added animations to his slides for visual learners as well as did epoll questions to make sure the class understood concepts. His tests are very detail based so I would strongly recommend attending lectures.
He is a really good prof. He talks at a very good pace during lectures, and really explains things thoroughly. He does test on small details so make sure to study everything even if it doesn't seem important. His assignments really make you think but they are generally fun to do. He is also very accessible for outside help.
Dr. Srayko dedicated a lot of his lectures into explaining the concepts he is teaching using examples and visuals and such, which helped immensely. His quizzes were great for recognizing the main ideas of the course, and he is fully transparent when it comes to describing midterms and exams. However, he doesn't offer practice midterms/exams.
Great Prof! His exams are tough and requires you to pretty much memorize the lecture slides as well as small things he adds as he's teaching but the midterm and final themselves were very fair. I definitely recommend his as the other 107 profs aren't as good
I loved his lectures, I had him first sem and thought the content delivery was clear and very engaging. His tests were very detailed but that was expected so just take an hour or two each week to review and you will be fine. I also thought his grading breakdown was super fair and beneficial to most
Dr Srayko is a good prof and I found that he explained things fairly well. However, his lectures are a bit dry at times. Attendance is mandatory (must attend a certain amount of lectures to obtain a percentage of your grade) and is recorded through the use of Epoll during class. BIOL 107 is a very heavy class, but reading the textbook does help.
He says the textbook is mandatory, but he doesn't test on material solely from the textbook so it's not really worth buying. Exams are very specific and you basically need to memorize all the lecture slides, so not an easy course. Also doesn't provide a ton of extra resources like practice tests. Funny in class and not super boring though.
His quizzes aren't worth much, making the exams heavier. Bio 107 is a very content-heavy class so I don't blame him for my hatred of this class but he was very monotone and often explained concepts in so much detail that it was overwhelming. He always stayed after class to answer questions but his exams were hard as he tested small niche things.
There is definitely lots to know in this course but everything related together nicely. Felt the exams were fair and the quizzes are helpful to make sure you don't fall behind. If you wanna do good in this class, focus on doing good in the lab portion and always try and understand concepts along the way.
His exams are based on the most randomest facts that are not the big, main topic of the course. If you want to ace the course, memorize EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING and memorize the most random facts you do not expect to have on the exam. His quizzes are more on the main topic but sometimes adds tricks and twists his questions.
Definitely the best prof out of the introductory bio profs at UofA. Attendance is worth 3%, but almost everything you're tested on is covered in the notes he provides. Tests focus on some minor details, but a lot of it is review from highschool. Midterm is all MC, final has an MC and short answer portion. He's really nice too + lectures are great.
Liked his lectures, but content heavy. He will test you on small things that are not part of the larger topics he is teaching. Pay attention to the small things he says in the lecture. There were 11 helpful quizzes. The exams are hard so make sure to stay on top of this class if you are not one of those "bio is so easy" people.
His lecture is kind of boring and sometimes he mumbles a bit, but his notes are decent. Studying a little bit every day is crucial to do well in his class because of the number of mini-quizzes he gives. His tests can be a bit tricky due to the amount of specific questions he asks, but if you study the key concepts he emphasizes you can do well.
Dr. Srayko's lectures can be a bit dry, but his explanations are clear. Stay on top of the material through regular studying and utilize resources like unstuck study to prepare for the detailed exams. With diligence, you can do well in this challenging but rewarding course.
Can't seem to write a review that passes the site's guidelines for him :/
