Martin is so adorable! the class is easy if you really study the power point lectures and know the information. Martin is a little hard to understand, but he basically only reads what's on the slides. 2 great courses to fulfill science GCRs!!!
so easy, don't bother going, just print slides
Awesome prof.
What a cutey patootie! I love listening to him! I sit in the front row every day! Class is easy, but I even learned some important and useful things from this class (but no chemistry).
chem is tough for me, but he is very lenient on partial credit...nice guy, very helpful
This class is harder than people say. I took it as a blow off class and although, it was my easiest class, it was not my highest grade last semester.
easiest class to fill science requirements, take it! easy A-/B+ just go to lab and study lecture notes :)
Easiest way to fulfill Science GCR, but is basically a biology class - technically "biochemistry." Labs are quick and painless, and if you genuinely study for the tests, they're not too bad. Just don't completely blow it off.
Waste of tuition $. "Cash Cow" of GW. Pointless lectures, hard exams, useless material. Throws 300 students in the ring at $3,000 a pop and, wallah! Little educational benefit.
Not very hard, but you have to attend class in order to do well o n the tests. Good luck on the tests, by the way...they're hard as anything.
I know its only intro chem, but he makes it SO easy, and he's willing to spend lots of time maikng sure you understand the material...plus he's hot, so if your honors and need chem, take it!
Martin is such a nice guy. I kind of have a crush on him. His lectures are clear although sometimes boring. The tests are hard, but you can do pretty decent if you just study for 10 minutes. Lab was really easy too.
If you don't get an A in this class, I don't know how you got into GW to begin with. All his lectures are on-line, so coming to class is just for extra credit points. If you are a poli-sci major like me and absolutely hate lab science, he's your guy!
This man is the best advisor ever! Friendly, approachable, and helpful. Thank god, since my peer advisor was a moron.
hes a good teacher
There's really no work outside of class until it's time to study for the tests, which are very hard! You get extra credit for going and the labs aren't hard (but they are long and tedious) suck up to your TA because they give you a big part of your grade based on their impressions of you.....
All you have to do is go to lectures and you'll get bonus points. Only outside work is for exams, of which there are three. No cumulative final. Easiest way to take care of your science requirements. I hate science and this isn't bad. TAKE HIM!
This class was pretty pointless but it was easy so if you just want to take a GCR go for it.
Martin is the greatest. He puts a lot of effort and enthusiasm into his lectures (which aren't even mandatory), makes cute and funny jokes, gives lots of extra credit, and is just downright adorable. His tests are pretty easy and half the questions usually come from the practice tests anyways.
Very easy class for somebody who dislikes science. Tests are based off lectures and review questions. Labs were a joke and extremely easy to excel in. As long as you go to most of the classes with the notes previously printed out, you will be just fine. Take this class for GCR credit !!
He's adorable and explains things very well. The tests are fine if you attend every class.
He's a really nice guy and he honestly cares if you learn or not. I thought he was a great teacher last semester but this semester he's grading intentionally hard. I don't know what brought about this change. I feel like he hates our class.
this course was incredibly easy, and i am not a chemistry person. all u need to do is memorize notes and definitons, then forget about them after the exam. only 3 exams, no final. labs are a breeze. bindesh was a chill TA : )
Didn't like the class at all. It was boring. Didn't do well either. Not too sure about his teaching
Raters who didn't like this class must be slackers. If you work hard and meet with him he gives you every oppurtunity to do well. His extra credit is fantastic and is responsible for my A-. Not the most interesting class at times, but he's really funny, and it's certainly a good way to fufill a requirement
HARD. DON'T TAKE IT.
I took this course for to fulfill my GCR. I thought this class would be a piece of cake like what other viewers saying. However, I found out that this isnot an easy course unless you put lots of effort.
Chem 003 seriously is a really easy course, I don't understand how people could think it is really difficult. You do need to study for the tests, but could easily do so the day before the exam. Bindesh is a chill TA for lab, and there is Extra Credit each lecture. You definitely need to go to the lecture to do well on the tests.
Hard to see how people didn't do well in this course. He's not going to hand you an 'A' on a silver platter, but if you GO TO CLASS and study a couple of hours for the exams you'll find Chem003 a piece of cake. Martin gets grumpy sometimes, but understandable when he's a serious chemist teaching students that hate the subject.
I don't know why people are complaining. Zysmilich is a great teacher, he's clear and goes exactly to the point in lectures. However you DO need to go to the lectures to know whats going on.
he gives 20points extra credit. labs are easy to get A+ in and boost your grade. he is very clear and is very organized. tests are not easy, but if you study you should be fine.
Ok, here is the honest truth. Martin is a great professor, his lecture slides are absolutely clear. Unfortunately you make think you did well on his tests but you still don't do well. However, you do have an oppurtunity to receive up to 20 bonus points on one test if you answer enough of the extra credit correct. Labs help you, I got a B in the end
Best class you can take to fulfill your science requirements. Don't expect it to be a breeze, but it's not hard to get a decent grade if you just study for the 3 tests, do the extra credit and get through the labs.
If you dont have a background in chem (like AP in high school), avoid this class. Average exam grade was a 78. You can study for days and still get a C on the exam. Extra credit is helpful if you understand the material right after the lecture. Must do well in the lab and extra credit; I got an A- but stressed all semester over this course.
I hated Chem in highschool, but this class made me love it. No an easy class, you gotta attend lectures and study, but it's worth it. I'm taking Chem 4 now and it's so much fun. Martin rocks!
I don't like chem (or any other science) but this course isn't painful at all. My high school chem class was so much harder. 3 all mult-choice exams are easy if you know your stuff (go to lecture and study for maybe 3 hours). Labs are ridiculously easy but be nice to your TA. Extra credit is great. SO MUCH EASIER than Bio 3/4. Take for GCR!
Awesome professor. puts so much effort in his lectures. going to class is mandatory and print of his lecture notes before hand. exams are pretty detailed and you must study hard for them, but this is a great class to take if you need to fulfill that gcr.
Martin is a good professor, even though he can be kind of ****y. However, if you're not a science person and need to take science to fulfill requirements, this is the class for you. It's not hard to get a B or higher in this class. Be sure to attend lecture. No text book reading is required. Just read his lecture nots to study for the exams.
good class for non-science majors
He's really pissed off because all he teaches is Intro Chem, so he just wants to get it over with. Adds humor to class, isn't great at explaining things. You'll do fine first part of the semester, 2nd half is rather rough if you didn't have a good chem class in high school. Only a midterm and final. Gives extra credit points, which help your grade
I thought that this class was going to be a lot easier. Not 2 hard, but you do need to study specific details of the lecture.some ridiculous questions on the test. he is funny,so i guess that's a plus-extra credit is useful, that is,if you actually go to class all the time AND get them right.take it if u want to fulfull gcr's and you like chemistry
Martin is awesome! His expectations are really clear, the material is simple, only two tests with an optional final and TONS of extra credit. Labs aren't too bad if you have a good TA. Study hard for the exams though because they are pretty tough. If you need a science requirement, this is a great choice!
good class for non-science majors. go to class for extra credit it really helps your grade. tests aren't bad. easy to get A for class
Remarkably good spirits, considering that most of the kids in his 300-person lecture don't want to be there in the first place. Martin makes fulfilling GCRs painless. Labs are irrelevant but easy, and lectures are straightforward. The accent and attractiveness didn't hurt, either.
So good it hurts.
Very thorough and tests were not very hard, also gives a lot of extra credit
Class and labs are really easy, and there is a ton of extra credit. If you have any high school chemistry experience than this class is really a joke, since most of the material is about the environment anyway.
He's a great teacher, funny and nice. His lectures are well organized and interesting. The tests are fair, you really have to study/memorize all the powerpoint slides but dont' need the textbook. Go to all the classes so you get extra credit points which really really help to raise your grade in the class.
Martin is great. If you go to lectures most of the time and study at all for the tests you can get an A.
Very easy class if you show up to the lecture and use the provided notes there is no reason not to get a B or higher. The extra credit is worth it. Probably one of the easiest classes at GW. The material is actually interesting and the lectures are usually bearable.
Relates chemistry concepts to real world problems. Amazing extra credit. Nice and funny professor
He really understands that this course is for non-majors and that it is required for most. The lectures are very clear and organized. You should print his notes prior to going to class and take some during class. The tests are quite easy if you seriously memorize the slides. Do well in lab and decent on the tests and you can get an A.
He is very funny and a good lecturer, but I found it unncessary to go to all classes. I got an A even with very little extra credit points, which you get for going to class. I feel bad for him because he clearly has a great interest in chemistry, which no one else in the class does, so he seems very frustrated. But if you have to fill a GCR take it
he is a funny guy, but can get angry if people talk a lot during class. DONT buy the book. The tests are hard but theres only 2 and if you go to class you should be able to get the extra credit which helps a lot! his class is extremely insightful and interesting I highly recommend it regaurdless of for filling a GCR, you learn a lot from him
No homework, no textbook, just 2 exams that derive from powerpoint lectures. Extra credit helps. He's a funny guy too
he is the worst professor on GW campus he shouldnt be here. he is a miserable guy who doesnt emjoy what he is doing. dont take this class you will regret it
Best prof I had at GW. Very clear, very funny, very fair, very interesting. Exams are challenging, but if you go to class and ask questions you'll have no problem with them. I'm not a science person, and I loved this class.
Martin is a really good professor as he is really into chemistry. Make sure you go to class otherwise your grade will suffer. Tests are all from his lecture notes and often are harder than one expects. MEMORIZE all of the key terms to ace the exams and the extra credit really helps to boost your grade
This is certainly the best non-science major science class to take. Martin truly understands that none of his students actually want to take his class or be science majors, thus helps us relate the content more to our fields. I would take his class again in a heartbeat and the extra credit helps ALOT!
Don't take this class! Labs are sooo hard to get a good grade on, the class itself is boring, homework sets every week that are graded strictly. Tests have super hard questions on them, so it's hard to get an A! Stay away from the Honors program!!
We studied the basic chemistry such as structure of atoms etc, but after that it were pollution, green house effect etc --- topics you can connect to personally and not bunch of chemical equations. Make sure u go to class though because u have to answer questions in class to get extra credit. Lab was a breeze. But i heard Chem 004 is much harder.
Makes Chemistry interesting, for once. Great sense of humor and actually relates chem to the real world. Oh, and he's totally sexy too.
i do not like science... but love this class...lectures are extremely clear... prof makes sure that there's no confusion during lectures, pausing here and there for questions... extra credit is good... you won't WANT to miss class... his accent is awesome and he's definitely hot!
not hard not easy
Martin is the best Honors science professor. While all the other classes complained, we got things done and really delved into the chemistry, biology, and physics behind global climate change. Beware -- without Martin, this course is a disaster.
Martin really pays attention to the fact that this class is not for science majors. He relates it to real life stuff which makes it more interesting.
Buy the clicker and attend classes for those extra credits, it will boost your grade a lot. Study hard for the exams and take advantage of practice exams provided. Definitely the best science to take for non-majors.
Contrary to most comments here, this class should not be taken as a joke. Yes the extra credit counts but there is a lot of work to be put in for both the lab and the tests to get an A. The professor is very helpful and knowledgeable, but students have to work for that good grade.
Don't buy the textbook. If you go to lectures, fill in the gaps in the notes he puts on Blackboard, and study for the exams you should be fine. And MAKE SURE you do the extra credit questions in class. They're free points.
Great professor. Not an "easy A" but do-able. Go to class. Do well on the extra-credit, in Lab and you can get an A.
Ridiculously easy class, so that even the least scientifically able (read: me) can walk away with an A. Attendance isn't required, but go for the extra credit and don't forget the Respondex. No classroom discipline at all, so time is sometimes wasted while he lets talking people fall silent on their own.
This man has haunted me for the past year. His ability to make the students live in fear of him is borderline dictator level. But he is really clear on the material and if you actually do the work its not bad to get a decent grade. Just dont use more than 1 clicker he will totally call you out-->martin as im sure you read these it wasnt me
I'm not a science person, but this guy made me like it. He made me wanna know more, which in turn, allowed me to do better on tests. Lab is so easy. Stephanie Houlgrave is the best (try to get her for lab). Buy the clicker. Get B's on tests, A's on lab-85 or above on E.C.=an EASY A. Don't take ZENKLUSKEN! ZYSMILICH RULES!
Do not buy the book. Go to class, print of the lecture notes and study with a group for exams. The extra credit in class will help you a lot. Interesting but if you blow off the class you lose!
oh marteen, well he is definitely the better option when referring to him or zenklusen but his tests can sometimes be tricky. The extra credit helps somewhat, it counts as 5% of your grade. Honestly, just go to the class, use the clicker, and cram two days before the test and youll be fine
Great teacher; very clear about the subject and really makes class interesting. As for getting an A, it's not unbelievably difficult, but don't blow it off thinking it'll be easy. Print out the slides and study for tests, do practice problems and extra credit, and please get an A on lab. Take good notes on lectures; obscure facts appear on tests.
I heard this was a really easy class, but the tests are HARD. There are only 2 and no other work, except lab stuff, but you HAVE TO STUDY FOR THEM. There's a ton of material on each one. There's a make-up though, so you can always take that if you bomb one of the other 2. Overall good professor, but lectures are pretty boring.
HORRIBLE teacher..all he does is read from powerpoint..if you want to teach yourself chem take this class..not an easy A..tests are too hard and he doesnt care if you fail or not..labs are easy but not worth it..unless you are really good at chem do not take this class..extra credit is 5% and it wont count if you dont pass the two tests
Need to study hard for the exams. I got an A but it was a lot of work. Exams are packed with detail, but he also leaves whole sections of units out. Don't like, not recommending.
worst experience I had with a GW professor. Just don't take this class. Unfair grading, extra credit worthless, useless work...and in the end...you learn absolutely nothing. Should have taken something else...don't make the same mistake I did.
Best prof at GW! Don't know what these people are talking about. Very interesting material and beautifully presented. Martin is funny and very helpful. Tests are fair. Grading is clearly explained the first day of classes. I took Chem 3 with him too and recommended his courses to all my friends.
Oh Martin. Best way ever to get rid of 6 required science credits. I have no interest in chem and am not good at it but made 2 B+. I took Chem 3&4. I think 3 was easier. Just study your ass off for the two tests, and go to class for the extra credit! The extra credit will save your ass! The labs are a joke just show up and earn 20% of your grade.
Great Professor... best I have ever had. I hate Science classes, but he made everything so interesting and fun. If you go to class, do the E.C., and study, you'll be fine. Anyone that did bad obviously did not try that hard. Chem 004 is a little harder, but remember that you can always redo a test grade with the final.
Science is not my subject, but he made lecture fun. Granted, you need to study hard for exams whose averages are usually B- or C+, but if you need to get rid of your GCRs, this class isn't bad.
Doesn't give an answer key to the problem sets, berates you for asking for them, and doesn't mind bringing down your grade dramatically if you miss two classes. If you worry that you won't be good at chemistry, but you are very good about showing up to class and asking questions, this is the class for you. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.
This man rates himself on this website. He is an evil person and his tests are completely impossible (even in classes for non science majors). I would not recommend him to even my worst enemy. Have fun taking the tests on material he never taught. People came out of the midterm crying after studying for days.
I have never been a science person, but I needed to take the class as a requirement. Zysmilich made the class very interesting and was very engaging. The class is fairly interesting. As for his tests, there are only two tests and they are not ridiculous - most of the information is on his powerpoint slides. Very easy to get an A.
If you took any chemistry class in high school I guarantee this class will be easier. We didn't even have to learn how to balance equations because he said that was "too hard." I went to every class and all the material on the exam was covered in lecture and on every exam question you can usually eliminate 2 or three choices off the bat.
Nice/Corny guy. Pay attention to lectures and do the extra credit. Also do well in your labs so you're grade boosts. You can get 60s on the tests and add ec and labs and get a B- in class.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. The only reason you should get less than a B in his class is if you don't go. He posts his lecture albeit a more limited version so even if you miss a class, find a friend and fill in the blanks. If you have a class with him, stick with it. It's worth it.
Great teacher, willing to help, cute accent. Includes some jokes and extra credit to liven up the lectures. Definitely worth taking (no reason not to take him). Lectures are big enough you don't need to attend, but I'd recommend attendance (helps clear up topics). Also, he wrote the textbook for the class, so obviously he's dedicated. Great man!
Um whoever wrote that he rates himself is pretty wrong - there's 20 pages of smileys here that I agree with. He's cute and corny, and a good teacher. Worth taking (Especially if you need to complete a lab science gcr).
Tests are confusing. Extra credit only helps yu once you pass the class. 2 tests, 1 make up, but you must get at least a 40 to make up the exam. Even if you do worse, the make up grade will count. Have to teach yourself for the most part.
I took CHEM 003 as well and had to take CHEM 004 for a requirement. I enjoyed his class again, and truly learned a lot in his class. CHEM 004 is a little trickier than CHEM 003, but so long as you go over the powerpoints and practice problems, the tests are easy. Great professor and I would definitely take him, especially if trying to fill a GCR!
2 tests, each is worth 40%. Lab is worth 20% (extremely easy). Extra credit via in class questions is a possible 5% extra added to your final grade. The tests are very easy if you study the practice problems and his "Over the Counter Chemistry" book. He's kinda like a high school teacher with electronics, but he does a good job of explaining things
2 tests each 40% each. Lab is 20% and really easy just go to lab and get the 20 points. Also go to class, even though attendance is not mandatory, extra credit is CRUCIAL! go to class it can be the difference between a whole letter grade. Study his book, that will ensure at least a B on the exam. Good class to achieve the science GCR.
Martin has been my alltime favorite teacher at GW. I went into the class not really having an interest, and came out loving chemistry. He will answer any and all questions, no matter how stupid they are. He is so helpful and wants you to do well. If you take good notes and study hard, you can come away with an A.
Martin is pretty good. His lectures are good, considering the content he is teaching. Def don't need to go to the lectures.. he posts all the lectures online. Tests were surprisingly hard. I studied a lot and got an A- for the first one B+ for the second. the two tests are worth 80% of the grade. thats effing high
Tests are pretty difficult so its really necessary to go to class to get the extra credit participation points.
This class was ridiculous! Despite being advertised for "Non-Science Majors" it was difficult enough that even committed, science majors, were not earning passing grades. Labs are insufferable, TA's are usually foreign and completely incapable of speaking English, and Martin himself is unreasonably adversarial. avoid, avoid, avoid.
I hate chemistry, but this class was great. Martin uses technology really well and is very in control of the class. He moves quickly and uses the whole class period, but he know's what he's talking about and is very clear. Study hard for tests and be diligent on the safety quiz in lab. That was graded more heavily than anyone thought.
He is nice and tries to be helpful, but his tests are impossible, and these count for 80 percent of your grade. The average on the first exam was 68, and the second even lower. There were a lot of people getting in the 40s, 50s and 60s. The class itself isn't too hard, so the way the tests come at you is really surprising and nonsensical.
Could not understand him. GW should pay for him to take english classes to perfect his english. It was extremely hard to understand him. After all, we are paying good money to attend this school and learn. The least Gw should provide is a teacher that can properly get the point across through speaking. The text book is absolutely terrible with man
Tests are SO HARD. I studied for a week in advance, every day for both and did terribly. Many people were getting very low grades, which was pretty unexpected because the material itself isn't that hard. He just writes his tests to be confusing.
My average for my other classes are 90% or above, but received an 80% for this one. GPA buster. If you want to have a chance of getting above a 75% on either one of the exams, memorize every word of every chapter. The practice problems won't do you any good either.
Tests are so, so hard! If you go to class, study hard, and go into the exam thinking you know the information, there is a good chance you will still get a C or a D on the exam. Plenty of people were getting D's and F's.
Exams are no walk in the park. He is very unclear about the level of expertise he expects on exams. Count for 80 percent of your grade. One make up offered. Just took it- I wish I hadn't.
for the most part easy.I didnt like was the textbook (written by Professor Martin).I paid 50 something dollars for a book that was incomplete and was tested on chapters that werent in the book.Tests werent as easy as I thought (came to this class from Chem 11). Do practice questions and study =A.There are no D's in his class 64=C and xtra cred =5%
Not much work involved, easy lab which boosts grade a decent amount. Yes, tests are difficult but study hard for about a week before them. Only two tests and easy lab, not much work overall in the class so it's not bad.
I'm not sure why so many people come to college and expect every class to be a walk in the park. This class is not hard if you go every time, read the book as you go along, do every practice problem, take lecture notes, and study his power points. I got an A- by doing all of that. The people who complain are probably not doing the above.
I took Martin for Chem 1112. He was very fair and gave 5% extra for showing up and participating. He is very knowledgable about the material. I struggle with Chemistry, but I did walk away with a good understanding of the material. The exams are fair, but they are tough.
The class really isn't that hard. If you go to class and answer the extra credit clicker questions they help your grade a lot. You can get an A by paying attention to the lecture, reading a little before the test, and answering the practice problems which are almost the same as the exams.
The class is pretty straight forward. Two tests, each worth 40%, and a makeup that is optional if you want to replace one of your tests. Labs are simple, only lasting about an hour, and are worth 20% of your grade (a big boost). Extra credit can bump your grade up one level (B to B+, ect). If you pass the lowest grade you can get is a C-.
Hate chem took for GCR. Surprised by how straightforward Martin is in his exams. Exam Q similar to class Qs (write them down, he doesn't post them) and practice problems. Do practice Qs and read his articles. A lot of chances to raise grade. NO CURVE so study well for exams. Taking him again next semester. And buy clicker 5% bumped me from B+ to A-
Good class. Good professor. Easy A. Easy labs. Straightforward Exams. Good lecturer. BUY A CLICKER!
Excellent professor. He really knows his stuff and explains things very simply. Definitely buy a clicker and write down the Q's for it, do the extra credit, put in a little effort in lab, and you'll be fine. Take advantage of his office hours, as well. He loves to help.
I had him for 1003 and 1004, good professor. liberal slanted. learn a lot. BUY A CLICKER! its extra credit. write down i class questions. EASY to get a b or higher. go to class. pay attention. slight accent but still understandable.
The class is interesting and Professor Martin is really great. Class always flew by, and the exams were not very difficult. Just review your notes and you should do great! There is also a chance for 5% extra credit and a makeup exam if you need to raise your grade.
So easy. Not much material, extra credit bumps your grade, and labs are a joke. Taking him again next semester for the easy A
The class is pretty basic. It's based off of powerpoints. Just study ahead and know all of the material. He gives alot of information but there are only 50 questions on each test so that makes it a little difficult. The labs are easy
He is the best professor in any sciences i have had to date. he is extremely helpful, the tests are based straight off of the powerpoints- if you don't know it then you're not coming to class. go to class! attendance counts + you learn i didn't even buy the textbook cause he gives you all the information you need.
Awesome easy class as long as you read the book and go to lecture easy to study for, no problems with this guy, also has an awesome accent
Seriously, this is NOT an easy class. The average on the 1st test was a 77 and the 2nd test was a 74.2. This is a class for non-majors, A.K.A. the science-challenged! Lab grades and extra credit only apply if you pass the tests first. Find another science class to fulfill your G-PAC req.
Martin is the man. Tries to make sometimes dry material funny with humor. Extra credit helps too. Really dedicated and clear with explanations. Highly recommend to fulfill GPAC requirements.
If you are looking for an ESAY A, this is NOT the class to do that. However, if you study hard and attend every lecture, do the extra credits, you should be fine. Overall, an awesome but difficult class! Labs are so easy.
Stay away! Exams are all multiple choice but answer choices are always very similar, making exams very difficult. Has a ridiculous policy that if you do not get certain grades on the exams you fail the entire class, no matter how hard you worked overall. Unapproachable teacher, doesn't seem to want to help students. Stay away from Zyzmilich!
First off, people grading Martin lowly probably didnt look at his practice problems, are science challenged, or just don't understand science. Martin is very approachable, willing to help, and his tests are based off of practice problems and lecture notes. This is as easy as it gets for chemistry, if you were good at High School Chem, you will fly
Pretty straightforward, easy class. Just go to class and get extra credit, do practice problems, and do fine. Labs bothered me more than anything else
If you want an easy A, this is not the class for you. However, Martin is extremely good at explaining things and will answer any questions you may have. Tests are not easy, but if you read the textbook and study you will do well. Martin knows the material can be dry and tries to spice it up. Really nice guy and awesome accent!
Professor Zysmilich is super knowledgeable. I took him for Chem 1003 and 1004. He is good at explaining the concepts, and in Chem 1004, he wrote the textbooks. His tests are detailed and challenging. Extra credit for clicker questions. Highly recommend this class. Builds nicely off of hs chemistry, but it isn't necessary to have prior knowledge.
Good teacher, wants kids to succeed. Tests aren't hard as long as you study, He puts lectures online, so you can miss class, but you will also miss clicker questions, which are extra credit. Go to class, pay attention and you'll do fine.
The best science teacher I have ever had. He has a great sense of humor. I took his science for non-science majors 2 semesters in a row. The material is easy and fun! He does a fantastic job of simplifying and explaining concepts. Going to lecture would cheer me up on a bad day, he is just that great!
Worst class I have ever taken at University. Has no invested interest in the students learning. Grading policy is stupid. Even if you work your butt off, get an A in lab...try your best in the class, but aren't a science person or multiple choice test taker, you'll fail. He just wants to get in and out, doesn't care about the students at all.
Really good lecturer in the front of the classroom. He was also very clear and really wanted to make sure the students understood the material. Class itself was not that hard, just study and the grades will come. Show up to class for clicker questions, extra credit is very useful. Labs are annoying because they're mindless and simplistic but easy.
He is a good lecturer and is crystal clear with what is on the exams. However the exams are 50 mc and difficult. I am a poli sci econ major who is having a hard time studying for mc tests. He does not let you get back your tests and you cant use calculators on exams. You must pass both the exams and lab to pass the class. Not recommended for gpac
Zys is a great guy & EXTREMELY accessible outside class. He'll help those who seek him, but those who wait until the last min, he has no sympathy. Orgo is hard, but Zys tries to make it doable. He's serious when he says "There will be no curve" - only o-chem prof not to curve. Weekly problem-sets were annoying & added piece other classes didnt have
Overall not a bad class if you like chemistry. Must teach yourself the notes. All lectures are posted online. Only 2 tests and labs make up your grade.
He is a little bit hard to understand and also does not always cover all of the info on the test.
Zysmilich gives you a lot of information that can be a lot to comprehend if you are not science savvy. He does make some science jokes which are amusing. You're grade is 20% lab (which you easily get above a 95 on), 40% exam 1 and 40% exam 2. Get Bs on both of them, and then go to lecture to get extra credit and you should get a B+/A- for the class
He wasn't a bad prof, he just isn't particularly interested in the students. Usually he seemed disinterested and unhappy. I had the class sold to me as easy, which it really wasn't (to get an A). The TAs will not help you get a good lab grade- but the test makeup is nice. If you prefer large lectures and like the topic, you might like it.
Chemistry can be a difficult subject to wrap your head around, but once you do, it is very interesting. Zysmilich will help you in any way he can so that you understand, and an appreciate chemistry. He appreciates hard work. DOn't take shortcuts, study hard to understand, and you will do fine in his course.
I thought this class wasn't going to be that tough, particularly for me who isn't a sciencemath person, but this is a lot more difficult than I thought. If you do poorly on the exams you're going to do poorly in the class, since your total grade relies on the two exams and your lab grade. Don't take this class if science isn't your thing!!
Zysmilich is a great guy. I've never had a professor offer so many extra office hours and provide lengthy email responses the day before a test. Chemistry is hard, but Zysmilich makes you understand the information instead of you having to memorize it. If you keep up with the material, you should be fine.
I'm not a science person and I enjoyed his class. The things he talks about are interesting and some are even applicable. Simply knowing how a few medicines work in the most basic ways is interesting. Just study before the tests and you'll do fine
Zysmilich isn't the most actively engaged professor, but Contemporary Science for Non-Science Majors isn't a class that requires him to be. If you have any scientific ability whatsoever, it is very hard not to end up with a good grade. Study before the two tests, do your lab work, and, most importantly, answer the extra credit and you'll do great.
If you have never taken Chemistry do not take this class! He assumes you already know the basics as soon as he start the class. Test are HARD! Practice problems do not help. Class average is a low 70s and even if you do well in the labs it doesn't help that much. I recommend taking another course as mostly everyone does bad!
This class is difficult simply because there are only two tests and they are worth 40% of your grade. If you mess up one of the tests, then your grade will be low. He does offer an optional third (makeup) test that saves a lot of people's' grades. His TA's are great and very helpful where he is not. Show up to class as extra credit will save you.
If you have to take orgo, take him. He is more clear than the other profs and the tests are more manageable (class avgs on exams were 81, 71, 59, 62). Compare to other orgo profs who have horribly low ones. It's orgo which means it's hard no matter what, but he's very accommodating and will help you as long as you don't wait to the lasts minute
Orgo is easy with Zysmilich. Go to lecture.
Good professor. Class is lecture based and ppt can be found on blackboard as well as test study guides. Some questions from study guide may appear on exam. Exam difficulty varies depending on students understanding and preparation. Extra Credit is borderline difficult and its random throughout lectures; have clickers out all during lecture.
The textbook is just his lectures written down, but make sure you read the extra articles. His tests have almost nothing to do with chemistry or lectures. He teaches and tests like they are two different classes. I asked for studying suggestions and he told me that nothing would help. There are two tests, each worth 40% of your grade.
He is a pretty good professor, but the extra credit articles are stupid and the class felt more like Bio than Chem. It is an easy class for someone who is looking to just fulfill a requirement and the labs are a joke.
Go to lecture or you will fail. Study all the Practice Homework problems for the tests. Chem 1112 is a hard class regardless, but Zysmillich is very clear and very smart which help to make it more manageable.
I took this to fill a requirement and I think that the lectures are super boring. There are only 2 tests, but there are opportunities for extra credit. I'm not sure where the professor is from, but sometimes it's hard to understand him. The labs aren't horrible, but you have to do a ton of worksheets for them. It's an okay class overall.
Professor Zysmilich is truly a very nice person, however his lectures are often very boring and long. Even though this class was for non-science majors, it still felt very science heavy and lacked the public policy aspect that I was looking forward to. His tests are tough if you do not attend lectures.
Not a hard class, and Martin makes it even easier. Funny guy with great lectures, and gives you a huge chunk of your grade back just for showing up and using the turningpoint clicker. Zero homework outside the lab, overall just a great course.
Tests are not that hard if you read through his slides carefully. Besides, using the clicker on class will earn a lot of extra points.
Prof. Zysmillich is a fair grader. He gives his principles in the beginning of the class and follows these principles exactly. His lecture is easy and he alway provides notes, which are really helpful for the class, before the lecture and the problem set, which is the exact questions you will find in your midterm and final. Strongly recommend!
Professor Zysmilich is alright. Chem 1003 is really just a chore for GPAC. Zysmilich repeats himself a lot, but his expectations are clear. You basically have to go to class because of the extra credit clicker questions. Tests are pretty hard, but you could easily get in the 70s and get a B+ or high B with the extra credit. Labs are dumb.
No homework. You can use clicker to get extra credit, up to 10!!! Two exams and one make-up exam if u did badly in the first two exams. You will have sample exam before exams.
go to his class will save your grades! he gaves extra credits during the class. there is one or two extra credits every class. if you go to class and pay attention during the class, you can easily get an A in his class. Also, do the practice exam he gives to you before the midterms!!!!!
Prof. Zysmilich is a great guy. His class is pretty straightforward, just make sure you show up to get the EXTRA credit. I've never been a science person and did not do well on his exams but still could've gotten a better grade had I cared about the class. He makes stupid jokes that are actually pretty funny. Great class overall
I hate chemistry so I won't be the most objective person. The class was fine, really long if you don't like it. It's a bit more than just introductory to chemistry. The finals and extra credit questions are tough, but lab is relatively ok. I worked only the day before the test and still got a passing grade. If it's for the GPAC, take something els
Good professor. FOr the most part tests were fair, just make sure to practice, practice, practice mechanisms
Pretty straight forward class. Grades come from one midterm, one final, and lab. Take advantage of the extra credit questions, the turning point cost is worth it. Pretty simple course if you do the sample questions for each exam you should do fine.
Honestly a really good teacher, his lectures are very clear. If you go to class and do the homework to the point you understand it you'll do very well. Homework is assigned about every other week and while it does take a while it isn't busy work. The tests are not unexpectedly/unnecessarily hard but it's not an easy A, you do have to work for it.
Orgo I is a tough class but he does his best to make it doable. You will definitely need to study hard but he follows a very clear schedule. Sticks directly to the book and doesn't get too far behind. Good professor.
Take advantage of the extra credit. It can mean the difference between a letter grade. His lectures aren't long at all, and his tests are fair. Just look over the lectures, do the practice problems, and complete the extra credit by showing up to class, and you'll pass. He gives you a lot of chances to do well. So use them.
Only two exams. No homework. If you show up every class and answer the questions, you will get many extra credits. It is not hard to get A. He is a very nice guy.
This is the perfect class if you are looking to fulfill the G-PAC. Make sure to to do all the extra credit and do all the practice problems.
Tests are multiple choice and have almost nothing to do with anything you talk about in class. Lab is easy, but also unrelated
Very funny lectures. Gives occasional extra credit with clicker questions. Doesn't use textbook. Pretty easy Gen Ed class. Labs are super easy, only annoying part is that you have to buy a GW specific lab book.
Don't take this class for your science requirement. It is extremely challenging for what it is and it killed my GPA. The exams require equations that were never gone over in class and there is no calculators allowed for exams and very limited time. Seriously, do not take this class. I was warned and didn't listen. consider this your warning
Do not take this class. There are only 2 exams based off your grade 40% each. 20% comes from your laboratory and did I mention this is only a 3 credit class? The professor does NOT make any initiative to help, basically reads off the lectures, and you are just teaching yourself. If this is for a g-pac course do not take it unless you want your GPA.
Professor Zysmilich is a very nice guy and clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. His lectures are not terribly exciting, but he offers extra credit (you can get up to 10% for you final grade). His tests are very specific, and do not fully portray all the was discussed in class. Lab is fine. I would not recommend as a GPAC
Martin was probably the best professor I had this semester, and the class I took couldn't be more interesting. As long as you pay attention in class and do the practice problems, it should be an enjoyable experience.
Zysmilich is a sassy yet amazing. I loved CHEM 1003 and will be taking CHEM 1004. Be sure to attend class to get those extra credit points, and the lab is very easy (Mark Kalaj is the man). The 2 tests are NOT easy you do need to study. However, if your lab grade and extra credit points are spot on, that can really bump your grade up.
No homework, but extra credit counts a lot, so go to class. STUDY, if you fail the tests you can easily fail the course. No HW only exams and extra credit AKA your course outcome could be excellent or horrible. Prof is eh, he doesn't seem to care, and what is taught in class is on the exam, but the exam goes into way more depth than the lectures!
His exams are pretty difficult but ultimately fair if you studied. I suggest going through the practice sets multiple times and doing as many book problems as possible. The lectures are great but fast paced so try to keep up. I think he is really good at explaining difficult topics and would definitely recommend him as an orgo prof.
Don't take this class if you don't have to. As you will find out, 2 tests account for 40% each. And if you aren't appreciative of mathematical and chemistry concepts, you will struggle. Plus, the two tests are all multiple choice.
You only take 3 tests (50 minutes to answer 50 questions) and the textbook does not help at all. He gives extra credit, but only if you buy the clicker and license. He grazes over topics a lot and then gets mad if students don't understand. The textbook is $70, the lab manual $90, and clicker $40 this class is too expensive for an intro course.
Zysmilich was a great professor. Chem 1112 was difficult, but he was definitely the best option for professors. He's really nice and approachable, and makes the lectures interesting.
If you want to fill a science requirement, don't take this class. There are only 2 tests each worth 40% of your grade and you only get extra credit if you pass those tests. The tests are pretty hard but fair if you study a lot. He is super nice and helpful but the class caused a lot of stress and requires you to work way more than you should.
Martín is great. Lectures are super helpful, his presentation of the material is very clear and easy to follow. He tells lots of jokes and puts memes in his presentations. The extra credit is hard, but worth it; literally up to a 10% increase in your final grade. Tests are pretty hard, but you'll be fine if you paid attention in class.
Zysmilich is an amazing professor and really cares about his students but he creates extremely difficult exams. The material is difficult to begin with so when he makes his tests like a puzzle that you only have an hour and 15 to do, it makes it hard to get an A. He also sometimes forgets that we don't know the material as well as he does
DO'NT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. You have to the lab and lecture separately, which sounds easy until you see his exams. They have nothing to do with the book or practice exams and are significantly more complex that what's discussed in class. You also have to pay for a clicker and license if you want extra credit - no free option is offered.
It's college chemistry ,not high school chemistry. Of course the class will require you to devote more time. You need to study the book and do the homework sets in order to do well. Those who didn't do well in this class are the ones who procrastinated and didn't put much effort. In overall, great professor. Take him if ur premed
Zysmilich is a true gem. Everyone who complains about Chem 1003/Chem 1004 just did not work hard enough. Every class in college should be taken seriously, and you should work hard. Yes, this course requires effort and study - wow big shocker for college students, right? He is very clear, accessible, and straight-forward. Just listen carefully.
His tests are extremely hard and many things come that weren't gone over in the lecture.
For a subject like orgo, he's a great professor. It's a very difficult class but he explains things very well during lecture. Exams are tough and designed to really test your knowledge. I don't enjoy orgo at all but I would definitely take him again if I had too. He's just a great guy and tries his best to make sure you understand the concepts.
Zysmilich is one of the smartest people I have known. He never had to stop and think about something if you asked him a question. He's very good at explaining concepts - if you have trouble GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Organic chemistry is a tough class, so it'll be a struggle with whatever professor you have.
I'm a business major and I took this class to fulfill one of my science requirements. BIG MISTAKE. I was told that this class was one of the easier science w/ lab options, but if you're not a science & math person I wouldn't recommend taking this class. I didn't do well on the two exams but the extra credit & lab helped a lot. A pass or fail class
Don't take this if you're looking for an easy science class. In lectures he (quickly) goes over concepts, but not what we're tested on in the exams, which are 40% of your grade. If you are stuck with taking this class and aren't strong in science, do the practice problems early on, read the textbook, and try to get all those clicker q's for EC
Literally made a graph on leading causes of bird fatalities. He never falls behind, covers everything, and is clear and to the point. I got a B+ on the first exam and C+ on the second, and even with 80% of your grade being these tests, I still have an A. Practice problems are only slightly representational of the exams and just be careful on them.
IMPOSSIBLE TO GET GOOD GRADES ON EXAM LECTURE HEAVY DON'T DO IT
Maybe he's fine for intro chem classes but awful for orgo. Covers a ton of material in a short amount of time. Not much HW which is graded for completion and guarded in office hours so little practice and a pain to see if you are doing it right. Exams are graded pretty ferociously- hardly any partial credit given.
Martín is the best prof @ GW, hands down. Also had him for 1112, he is extremely organized, clear and fair, and he never falls behind. Read the textbook, go to class, go over his psets multiple times and maybe add a few book problems and you'll be fine. Also he knows everyone's name and he teaches 300 new students every year, what a gem.
This professor is the best. The class is challenging but your effort determines everything. Do the problem sets and the textbook problems
Great class to fulfill a science credit. Very easy if you pay attention, I ended up with a 104 in the class. You can easily get 10% extra credit on your final grade by answering the XC questions in class. Don't bother buying the textbook, you only need to go to lecture to succeed. Looking forward to taking the 2nd half of this class in the spring!
This class was a little more challenging than expected. Pay attention in lecture, get extra credit clicker questions right, do decent on tests, and do well in lab, and this class is an easy B+ to A. Sometimes the lectures are dull, but Martín's occasional clips will keep you awake. Lastly, don't forget the accent it is Martín not Martin.
Can be a little intimidating but overall he's good. 2 exams make up your grade but theres EC using a clicker every class which bumped my grade from a B to an A. You HAVE to take notes during lectures and should try to do exam practice Qs because concepts are similar on the exam (especially the math) Study and do well in lab and an A is achievable
Not a science person, but absolutely loved this class. Super interesting info about important scientific developments that I've always been curious about. Tests were all multiple choice and the practice tests and the last class before tests really helped on the hard concepts. Really easy class if you study notes. Textbook was super helpful.
Two exams make up 80% of the grade. Tests are way harder and more specific than lectures. Textbook definitely not required. Martin is a good lecturer but make sure to take notes and study. Prior chem knowledge definitely helps. Extra credit is offered with a clicker which is expensive but worth it.
He makes you hate chemistry. He is a very bad professor. He gets bothered when a student asks a question, and he is not good at explaining things. Also, he is mean and hard to communicate with. I wish I did not take him, but the reviews were misleading.
Martin was a great professor. Class isn't mandatory but I highly recommend going if you want to make the tests easy for you. If you catch any grading mistakes he will fix the grade for you. The textbook is useless don't get it. Don't break anything in lab.
Great teacher, difficult class. Taking copious notes and going to LA office hours will be your saving grace. Problem sets are not mandatory, but DO THEM and do Cahill's problem sets from the other class and you will be prepared for the exams. Read the textbook + re-do problem sets + talk to LA's success. (lab TA's also can be great help!)
Just don't take the class. 2 test make and the lab make up your whole grade and you can go from a B to an F in the class just based on one point on exam. Beware.
Pro: Extra credit, ppt on blackboard, no homework or quiz, no mandatory attendance. Con: Two exams weigh 80% total. If you miss 3 labs, you get F. PPTs are on blackboard but some parts are empty--you have to come to class. Exams are pretty hard. No electronic devices allowed during lectures or he will call you out. He's caring and enthusiastic tho
Trust me when I say Im a very strong student and this class was brutal. If you have liftle or no chem background DO NOT TAKE his course. YOU HAVE TO TEACH YOURSLEF and use tons of outside help. Many people fail or get Ds.
The class average for all three exams was a 62 and for the final the average was a 74. I hit around 7 percent above average for every exam, including the final and I ended up with a B. The class exams were very tricky and the multiple choice were deceiving but the final was easier and were similar to past exams.
Prof. Zysmilich is a nice guy but his tests are very unfair and difficult and do not properly reflect his lectures and the practice problems done in class or posted online. Since the class is only grade don three tests many students do bad because of how hard his tests are. Also, he doesn't put answers to practice problems online.
Easy science requirement. Show up to class and get lots of extra credit (through clicker questions in lecture). Lab's easy. Tests are hard, but extra credit makes up for it. Textbook not required (and is expensive), but helps a lot for test/extra credit content. His lectures are pretty dry, but expectations/grades clearly set out.
Took CHEM 1003 with him in the fall and was thrilled to have 1004 with him this semester. Unlike the fall class, you should buy the textbook for this one, since he takes many questions straight from the practice problems here. Show up to lectures and study hard for the 2 exams (each exam worth 40% of your grade) and you'll get an A! TAKE THIS CLASS
Very tough and stressful class over the summer. Most of the class either dropped out or failed. He did not seem to care about his students at all.
Everything is covered in the lecture and there are 2 multiple choice tests that count as 80% of final grade. Lab is worth 20% (the lab is really easy). He also offers up to 10% extra credit so as long as you buy the clicker and go to class its an easy A/A-
I agree with his other reviews on Chem 1112. Tests made up most of the grade and the averages were appallingly low. That said, it's odd that the spring semester class averages were only slightly higher than his summer class despite the summer class being so small. It's almost like he's purposefully aiming for certain averages.
A chilly and unpleasant man. As a CCAS student, I was quite disappointed taking this class after taking Professor Kung's excellent and challening Intro to the Cosmos as my first science class. He reads the slides. That's about it. Tests are weighted very highly. He is aloof in his engagement with students.
Worst professor on all GWU
did not seem to care about his students at all
Dont do it!
You may catch up with the lecture easily, but the hard part is the exam. He posts practice exam beforehand, but the way questions ask you in the exam is completely different from the practice questions. Don't expect that you would get above B without super (like super-super-super) hard work.
The exam is totally different from the sample exam, worst Professor ever!
the worst...
exams are extremely hard
terrible
Prof. Z was awesome. He was such a great professor and will answer any questions you have. I'm taking another section of his class next semester because he was so great. Definitely do the extra credit and attend your lab- it really helps!!!
Class is graded by a midterm, final, lab, and 10% extra credit. All you need to do is do the extra credit questions in class, study for the midterm/final a week in advance and you'll get an A. If you don't like straightforward tests with no homework then don't take the class, but if you can study for two weeks out of the semester, you'll get an A.
Lab was easy. Lectures were boring. Wouldn't advise if you're not already good in chemistry already. Tests weren't as easy as everyone makes them seem.
People complain about the class a lot, but it isn't that difficult. Up to 10% extra credit offered through the clicker questions. Can be answered on your phone, but the code was down for probably about a third of the lectures this semester, so get the clicker to be safe. Don't get the textbook, it's not needed at all.
no hw, just two midterms and a lab section. probably your best bet for a non science major. lectures are extremely boring but if you pay attention and use the practice midterms to study its a decently easy A. As a person, I found him to be abrasive but it doesn't matter much in such a big class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT IT GIVES U 10pts on final average
Solid choice for a general ed science class. This class is half high school level chem, half environmental science. I fee like I left understanding climate change a little better. He tries to make the class fun, which I appreciate as a non-science major. Midterm and final both 40%, lab 20%, and you can get up to 10% extra credit.
Teaching wise, he's pretty average. You'll be in a 300 student lecture hall, so don't expect these profs. to care that much. He gives up to 10% on your final grade in extra credit w/ in-class clicker questions, but doesn't curve any exams. The final is optional and the chemistry content is like HS chem, but there's a large memorization load.
He's a good lecturer who is knowledgeable about chemistry. Final grade is 20% lab grade, 80% exam grades (2 exams), and 10% extra credit. Exams are not cumulative and are fairly specific. Study well from his notes and you'll be fine. It's normal to get 60s/70s on the exams and end up with an A/B in the course due to EC and lab. No final exam.
He is a really good professor. He doesn't take attendance and posts the lectures on blackboard but some parts are missing so you should go to class. I would also recommend going to class because he gives extra credit clicker questions. This class is easy if you pay attention and have experience in Chemistry from highschool.
Dr. Zysmilich is definitely very knowledgeable. He gives very clear lectures. However, this class is very hard; and especially the two tests will be 80% of your grades. I guess because I'm not a science person, so my tests weren't that great. He uses clickers for extra credits, so go to class and do those extra credits. It will help your grades!
His exams were really hard because the questions weren't about anything we learned or in the practice problems. Doing the clicker questions will give you a boost in your grade, but if it wasn't for the generous grading scale, I definitely wouldn't have passed this class. His lectures are really boring and no one pays attention.
TWO EXAMS DEFINE YOUR GRADE
He makes you hate chemistry. He is a very bad professor. He gets bothered when a student asks a question, and he is not good at explaining things. Also, he is mean and hard to communicate with. I wish I did not take him, Last senior semester and he lowered my gpa 0 comprehension from him.
no words needed dont do it
Honestly worst professor I have experienced. He is WAY too hard or a grader, and his test questions are nothing like what you do in class. He is trying to fail his students. Also he is very difficult to understand, so be aware before signing up for his class. Very few people made above a 70 on his tests. Truly awful
DONT!
Extremely hard tests
the worst lecturer ever
Professor Zysmilich is by far my favorite professor at GW. I had him both for orgo and chem II. I love him because he goes the extra mile to explain the reason behind a molecular reaction instead of making us just memorize stuff. He is also hilarious and helpful during office hours.
Honestly Prof Zysmilich is a really great guy. The class is hard, but any organic chemistry class is hard. He is a great lecturer and will explain concepts if you ask him. He likes when you go to office hours, so introduce yourself to him. He grades pretty harshly, but gives partial credit as long as you make somewhat of sense.
Took Professor Zysmilich for Chem 1003 & 1004 so thought he was good enough to take 2nd time. I liked both classes and would recommend him. This class is hard but he gives EC to help your grade. If you work hard you can get a good grade. If you slack off you won't do well. It's all up to you. Tests are multiple-choice and graded quickly.
prof. zysmilich really knows his chemistry. super smart guy. his lectures are really informative and he goes through every detail, but it's really hard to know what he will test on for exams, which are SUPER hard and had the lowest averages out of all the chem 2 profs. but you'll really know your stuff after the class if you study lots and pass!!
awful prof
Martín is actually a really nice person and has helped me a lot to learn orgo. Chemistry, especially organic is really hard so you'll have to work really hard regardless of who you have. A lot of people think he's too hard, but I honestly learned a lot from him. He can seem a bit condescending sometimes, but I think it's just cultural differences.
Professor provides really long lectures with certain information and when it comes to the test gives harder questions then practiced or talked about in class. Do not expect this class to be an easy A class for a gen ed requirement especially if you are not interested or good at chemistry. The tests are a lot harder for what they should be.
Most people say this class is easy because they have old tests but he has made major changes to the tests so it doesn't help. This class is pawned as an easy A but was a waste of my time as I had to withdraw because his tests don't reflect the material and I never was prepared (my average was a 50). The tests make up 80%, take another class please!
You need some basic knowledge of chem when you take this course if you want to get an A. Prepare iclicker to gain an extra point by answering 24 questions correctly in 30 questions during lectures which will rise you grade 10 percent totally. Do the problem set of midterm and final because it is similar to the exam. think comprehensive exam if need
Professor Zysmilich has great lectures, they are very thorough and he pauses after each section to look around for questions, which is pretty rare. He only graded the chem 1003 class by a midterm, final, and the extra credit clicker, which even if you don't get it, do the in-class practice questions. Don't buy the textbook; you'll never use it.
Clicker in class extra-credit opportunities. MC tests are hard but showing up to lecture & doing well in lab can save you. Nearly failed both exams despite never missing lecture/reading, but ended with a B because I did well in lab and took advantage of every EC opportunity. Hard class but there are ways to do well. Prof is kind and interesting.
Honestly really good prof for CHEM 1112. Explained everything really well and wanted us to ask questions. If stay on top of ALEKS and spend time truly understanding everything you should have no problem. Exams were tough, but doable if you study enough. Liked him enough to take him again next semester for o-chem if that says anything.
Professor provides really long lectures with certain information and when it comes to the test gives harder questions then practiced or talked about in class....
DO NOT TAKE. I took this class to get the GPAC and the quizzes did not match the lectures. I was all lecture and super boring. If you missed lecture or your notes weren't perfect it was hard. His curve because of COVID was generous. Definitely not a super easy science
Organic chemistry is no joke, and this class was the hardest I have had thus far. However, Professor Zysmilich is one of the best professors at GW. You will have to spend every night on chemistry in order to pass this class, but he doesn't have any surprises and he gives good lectures. Even though I hated this course, I loved Zysmilich.
Took him for CHEM 1112 and loved him! Decided to take him again for Orgo I. Orgo is a challenging and demanding course, but Professor Zysmilichs lectures are straightforward and aligned with the textbook. You'll definitely have to put in the work daily to see results.
It's a decent class to fulfill your science gen ed requirement. Lectures can get really dense and not accurately reflect the exams. Labs are pretty straight forward but can get a little hard sometimes since they are not parallel with what you are learning in the lecture itself. Overall, solid gen-ed if you have a natural interest in Chemistry,
Run the other way... Nice guy, super helpful during office hours but chem at GW just isn't it.
Chem 2 is hard + so are the exams but Zysmilich is AMAZING, a super smart guy, definitely the best Chem 2 professor and explains the concepts super well. Lectures are rly well structured and he's super helpful during office hours + schedules extra before exams. If the class distribution for final grades is bad, he'll curve a little. TAKE HIM!!
CHEM1112 is hard, but he makes the class easy. The class is lecture heavy, but if you attend class regularly, you will never need to read the textbook. Lectures are organized and structured. He offers office hours very regularly, and is accessible outside of class.
I love Prof. Zysmilich. Hes SO funny and his dog Lola is adorable!!! I suck at math and struggled with it on tests. I went to office hours every week and instead of telling me to improve my math skills hed show me how to solve or read the graphs. Which I really appreciated- given hes a chemistry professor not a math one. Taking him for orgo <3
One of the best professors out there. Although his method of teaching could be a bit boring (going through slides and doing practice problems during class), but he actually teaches you everything you need to know. If you complete every assignments given (Aleks) and study for the exams, you will do great in his class.
I dont understand chemistry and I took his class online during the summer. He was honestly a really good lecturer and probably my favorite chemistry teacher so far. There is a load of homework but his tests are to the point and like the problems done in class and the study guide and the homework problems.
Had him for CHEM 1112 and decided to take Orgo with him again. His lectures are straightforward and align with the textbook. Said from his regular office hours, he also offers help if you ask him. Great professor.
Loved him for 1112, but don't take him for orgo. Really condescending and punished us for getting a high exam average by making the second exam impossible. Instead of curving, he comes up with extra credit that is so impossible to complete you are guaranteed to not get any points. Go with a different orgo professor.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Studied two weeks before and still failed exams. Exercises on exams are not what he discusses in class AT ALL. He gives easy examples to explain and homework problems aren't hard either, and then exam problems are impossible. Book is useless. Do not take him.
Nice guy, but PLEASE avoid for Orgo. Lecture & HW don't match exams. In fact, besides the first exam, exams are nearly impossible. I was dedicated to this course, studying every day for exams weeks in advance, only to barely improve. Also he kind of makes you feel stupid for asking "easy" questions in office hours. Or at least, that's the vibe.
Yikes! If you want to fill your GPAC this is not the class for it if you want something easy. This class is graded by a midterm and final that are 60% of your overall grade. But the online parts of the class are easy. Good luck on those two exams cause if you fail them you're screwed.
This is a very traditional lecture, midterms, optional final class with easy homework. Most people didn't show up to many lectures, I did. The midterms were extremely hard, and the questions did not align with homework problems or examples completed in class. Professor himself was a nice guy, funny, and gave decent lectures, but definitely hard.
Took this class for GPAC credit and so glad I did. Every topic covered is pretty much just surface level. If you attend lectures, you should be all good for the two tests (which are the only assignments aside from the lab and extra credit) with some light reviewing. Just go to class! The XC is optional, but helps your grade/ a great way to review.
Aside from department's curve (only couple people are ALLOWED to get A). Prof Zys is one of the best profs I've had. Goes out of his way to help students. Obv gen chem 2 is hard so many non-stem majors would struggle a bit. He finds creative ways (experiments) to make lectures interesting, he brought a brick of uranium to class for nuclear chem.
I loved Prof Zysmilich and found him to be much better than my chem 1 professor. He explains things slowly and clearly in lecture, so you never have to read the book. He is very accessible in office hours. Tests are hard but very fair if you study and he also has extra review sessions before tests. Taking orgo with him next semester!
The tests are unnecessarily difficult. I studied for a week (7 days) yet did terribly on the test. If you are taking this to fill a gen ed take a different course.
Please DONT take this class. Like ever. I took it as a GPAC and am not even sure if I'm going to pass because you need at least 120 points out of the two exams to pass the class, and the tests are so hard. If you want to take an easy class, its not this one. He barely gives out extra credit and will not help you in any way if you are failing.
Dr. Zysmilich is the most dreaded of the orgo profs for his notorious exams (no curve) and standoffish manner. But put in the work, and you will probably learn more from him than the others. Don't be afraid to reach out; in one-on-one conversations, he's nicer than he seems. He isn't teaching orgo 2, and I can honestly say I will miss him.
If you show up to his lectures and put a decent amount of effort into the homework, you should be able to receive a fair grade. He does expect you to be familiar with basic chemistry concepts, since his lectures focus more on applications of chemistry to environment/energy. His exams are hard, but the questions are similar to his practice exams.
Professor Zysmilich is a nice man but he's not the greatest outside of class. Every time I emailed him questions he would always dodge the answer and leave me hanging. The tests are unnecessarily hard and include things neither the lectures nor the textbook went over. I studied harder than the last for every exam and still did worse than before.
2nd semester in a row w/ Zys. V organized and teaches whats needed. V accessible; office hours is usually a group review sesh. Take him! Note on Orgo1. A lot of practice and the course will seem like a breeze. Class avg was ~65: put in the work before the going gets tough bc everything builds upon each other. Once you GET it, it's v easy
Prof. Zysmilich is a good lecturer. He knows what he is talking about, and encourages questions. However, that does not take away from the fact that his exams are too difficult. Compared to the other professors, his exams were ranked the hardest, and he did not curve any grades. The list can go on about how unfair the grading for this class was.
Really intresting. Make sure to study as only 2 multiple choice exams are not curved. Lecutres and read textbook. Lab was really basic, luckily I had a nice TA
Professor Zysmilich is one of the best chem professors here. While the subject is extremely difficult he tries to explain it in a way that makes sense. He is always willing to answer questions especially during office hours. He is also very respectful to his students and always tries to help you out as much as possible.
Chem 1003 is supposed to be for beginners in chemistry, but it was still extremely difficult. Pf. Z was very helpful though; he met with outside of class (once for 2 hours) and answered every question I had. His office hours are pretty packed (especially with orgo kids) so I definitely recommend meeting with him outside of class. Hard, but worth it
took class to fulfill science and lab requirement. graded by 3 tests (80%) and lab (20%). prof is good but could be more accommodating. would recommend if you need for credit
Second semester with Zysmilich after taking 1112 with him. He is one of the dreaded orgo professors and though the exams are difficult, you will learn a lot. He is a great lecturer and his office hours were key to doing well in the class. He gives out practice sets that are extremely helpful and a must for the exams.
I hated this class, only C I ever got at GW. Please avoid he is very confusing and has too many online materials.
Zymillich is an incredibly knowledgeable but also challenging professor. By far the hardest class I've ever taken, but I feel genuinely prepared for orgo 2. DO NOT FALL BEHIND, every new lesson builds off the last one, so do tons of textbook and recitation packet problems. He seems intimidating at first but he's a very sweet guy and always helpful!
I am so happy to have taken Dr. Zysmilich's class. Although Orgo 1 is notoriously difficult, his teaching style and love for seeing students succeed has made me pursue a career path in chemistry. I highly recommend becoming a regular in his office hours, and to always ask for help. No one I recommend more than Dr. Z.
terrible attitude, lectures are good and study material is helpful.. based off of the attitude alone he will give you unnecessary problems
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! It is incredibly hard and not at all accessible for non-science people despite the title. Prof is fine but makes you buy HIS book for the class which is a little bit of a money grab. Interesting subject-wise but incredibly hard to keep up with the work and content.
I enjoyed Professor Zysmilich's class WAY more than expected. I usually hate science but he made it very understandable and accessible. You could tell he enjoys teaching the class and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Grade is ENTIRELY based on exams and quizzes, so don't take if you aren't a good test taker.
I didn't love his teaching style and hated how your grade depends on the three test scores. He didn't review any of the material well and when I attended office hours, he was a little condescending when I asked questions. Didn't do super well in his class but the optional make up final helped bring my grade up.
Most Grades are depended on really hard tests, need alot of effort to study out of the class, the lecture does not help at all and the grading is really harsh. Definatly do not recommend to take this class unless you are really good at chem.
If you aren't good in chemistry or haven't recently taken it. beware and run! your lecture grades depend on 4 hard exams so good luck
He is really nice, but sometimes his lectures are difficult to follow and understand making me read the book to understand. He often has one or two wrong questions on study guides or exams. He tried to schedule his hours through a survey, but they still ended up being at a bad time. The class is new this semester so maybe he'll figure it out soon.
Explain the concepts and mechanisms, he's patient with students and makes concepts digestible. He switched to online bb quiz's which suck but do practice problems to study. The Orgo exams are hard but practice the problems in Wiley, and read the textbook. There is alot of extra work outside of the class required. Its not too hard but fast paced.
Mixed ratings by others, but I really liked Zysmilich. I kept myself a week ahead the course schedule. The digital textbook was a simple / easy-to-read resource (USE IT). For tests, do his practice problem sets, revisit lecture problems, and visit office hours. I enjoyed the course, and an A is definitely possible, but not easy to get (hard tests).
