Very sweet lady and a good lecturer. She directly follows the book, so it is not pertinent to go to class, although it is helpful for the reinforcement. Her tests are not multiple choice, but are similar to book probs. and she does give partial credit.

Awesome teacher. Answers everyones questions. Goes slow. We went through one chapter every two weeks. Has a German accent though, but its not hard to understand her because she talks slow.

Dr. Schmeling approached Chem 102 with great dedication and tried very hard to teach us the material as thoroughly as possible. She was extremely helpful and her lectures were easy to follow. The German accent is very sweet and not a problem.
dr. s is a cool lady! very easy going, very nice to talk to! her tests are so easy and directly from the notes.. i mean...you can just change the numbers around and its the same....no homework, no BOOK!, just the lecture! great class! but lab sux!
i hate her with a passion..learned nothing..dont take her
Perhaps the one of the more frustrating teachers at Loyola, though warm and kind. Teaches by writing out notes prepared beforehand. Lab grading is somewhat arbitrary, without any comments made. Explanations are not adequate. Too much review of basics
I hated her! She does not know how to teach anything...she expects you to know everything the first time and her tests/quizes are impossible. If Chem is not your major and you don't know the subject like the back of your hand, don't take schmeling!
damn awful teacher. dont take. hard to understand. tests and quizzes are impossible and totally different from book and notes...no good!!
THIS LADY LOOKS SWEET, BUT IS A TOTAL ****!!! I HATE HER WITH A PASSION! SHE SEEMS TO ONLY CARE ABOUT HERSELF TOO! AND SHE MAKES UP IMAGINARY DATES IN HER HEAD OF WHEN THINGS ARE DUE THEN YELLS AT YOU WHEN ITS NOT DONE!!! WTF?!
as rating above, teaches by writing notes written out in advance (and taken from book) on transparents. Nice but slow teacher. Quizzes are multiple choice and have too few questions to give anyone a chance. Bell-shaped curve. 15 As+A-s and 15 Fs on first test.
Very nice professor. Though she may not appear feminine at times - being German does not help - she is human. very nice to talk to and really down to business and efficient - German. I highly recommend her.
Never take her class. Period. Horrible teacher. Needs to learn proper grammar too.
She is very slow and yes, she is sweet. But that does not make anyone a good professor. She writes as she talks and that's what makes her slow and what makes her a 'not-so-good' professor is that she does not seem to take Chem 101 seriously. I learned more on my own than I ever did in any of her classes. Also, she does not explain anything well.
DO NOT TAKE!Awful professor! Not helpful at all! Hard to understand! Doesn't know much about chemistry, I'm better off learning on my own, she doesn't explain anything well! And YES,I agree, she DOES NOT appear feminine at all!
not a very strong lecturer-maybe her method would help students who are interested in copying down every problem religiously without having an interest in the material. she is very nice, but style of note-taking makes class rather boring(even though, in my opinion, some of the material is interesting). mandatory discussionstests somewhat difficult
definately did not enjoy this class. her lectures mean copying everything she writes on the overhead into your notebook and she barely helps you during discussion.
by far THE WORST prof I've ever had. I didn't learn anything in her class and I didn't like her. DON'T TAKE!!!
Class notes never helped me which is why I skipped sometimes. Instead I taught myself the material while doing the problem sets, and passed her class with a near A+. Her tests were easy and concise which may have saved me; you'll have fun with other students jockin her accent. Kind hearted woman, yet spells m as n...
a nice woman, but i would never take her class again. i sat in the 3rd row and i never heard a word she said - and it wasn't only because of her accent. she just does not speak loudly. her tests are difficult as well.
I have 3 words for you - DO NOT TAKE!
As long as you comprehend the lectures and take notes, the test are exactly from lecture. Sometimes she slips up on what she copies onto the overhead, but usually is pretty good. Not hard as long as you grasp the big ideas. No minor details on test
Dr. Schmeling is a wonderful professor. I highly reccommend her! She cares about her students and wants them all to succeed. Her tests are clear and concise and she grades very fairly. If you are at class, take notes, and read the text, you will do fine. Good Luck! You are guaranteed to have a great experience with this professor!!
Easy! Her test averages are in the high 70s - low 80s, far better than any other professor. She is helpful, although to get a hold of sometimes. Very clear lecturer.
So if you can understand her rough German accent you still won't be able to do well. She really does not know what she is talking about. She has mixed up many things before and the class consists of three exams and then a final. Don't take it. If you fail one exam you are pretty much doomed
I don't really understand why she hasn't received higher ratings. She's a very nice woman, and is very helpful outside of class. She doesn't try to trick you on the material covered on the exam. I skipped quite a few classes, did the homework (which was due each Wednesday), never studied much for a single test, and ended up with an A in the class.
This class was okay. SHe has a thick accent so it was hard to understand her. But once you accept her accent, it gets better. She writes notes on the overhead and you just copy them down. she tells you exactly what is on the test, which is all scantron. overall, not too bad.
She is very helpfull and could be sometimes very misleading. I feel she is not competent enough to teach a graduate level course. Over all, her quality is inherently poor in terms of environmental chemistry. Very contradictory in concepts. But, an easy professor!

nice lady if you stay on her side, knowledge of subject not in depth
Dr. Schmelling is one of the nicest ladies you will ever meet. Although, this is really not a science course (ie, honors), she tried her best to relate her area of expertise to everyone, especially students that are non-science majors. Overall, a very wonderful professor.
Dr. Schmeling is a great teacher. If you pay attention in class and actually try to learn the material it is easy to do well. She is always willing to help as long as you ask for it and gives clear and informative notes. Overall a great professor. I would definitely take her again.
Sometimes she can be difficult to understand, but not often. She usually hand writes her notes, and it can be really hard to understand what she is writing. Basically, I taught myself in her class and learned most in discussion. She is a pretty easy teacher though, 3 tests and she drops the lowest one. Final is only worth 20%.
Excellent professor. At the beginning of each lecture she reviews the previous lecture. The owl hw helps a lot and is 5% of the grade. Exams are easy. Class averages were very high and there were a lot of As.
Lectures were boring, but the tests were easy. Do homework even though tests are basically from discussion. Final was fairly difficult because she had questions on recent stuff that we never covered in discussion, but you get a notes sheet.
Dr. Schmelling is a great prof. I was worried about understanding her, but her lectures were very clear. Sometimes class was boring/dry, but she GENUINELY wants her students to succeed. If you study for her tests and do OWL, you can do well on her tests. I really enjoyed her class- she made me like chemistry!
One of the most sincere and nicest professors you will ever meet. She is extremely helpful, and goes out of her way to explain the material if you're lost. Discussion is mandatory, lecture isn't; but I don't see how you would want to miss it - her attitude will brighten your day! Her tests are a breeze, and they're based off discussion worksheets.
Dr. Schmeling is a fantastic professor. She thoroughly goes over the material during lecture and explains everything in depth. Discussion is required. Exams mirror the discussion worksheets, so I recommend completing them diligently. Dr. Schmeling is very approachable and helpful during discussion. 3 exams, lowest dropped. Cumulative final.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Schmeling's lectures were very well-organized, clear, and to-the-point. Sometimes she would go through the powerpoints too quickly for you to get everything down, but notes are posted on blackboard after class. Mandatory discussion was once a week. Dr. S is awesome at explaining and guiding you through problems.
She is such an amazing professor! Definitely take her! I thought chem was just gonna be another boring, difficult class, but it actually turned out to be interesting a lot of the time. She will always be there to help you. Tests aren't bad as long as you study. Discussions are really great because they help prepare you for test. Definitely worth it
A fabulous and gracious professor! She's really clear in lecture and discussion, and very, very helpful. If you ever have a question, she'll explain the concept and guide you through whatever issue you're facing. Very organized lect. and always on topic. PS Disc wrkshts are a really good indicator of the type of questions that will be on the exams.
Dr. Schmeling is a very easy teacher as long as you attend class. I have prior knowledge to Chem so to me it was almost all review. She does have a little accent and says some words funny. Each hw assignment is about 35 pages but grades on effort. 3 exams (drop 1) and a final. I ended with an A-
Dr.Schmeling is a very good professor, I got an A- in her class. She gives a lot of mastering chem hw and that is what you should study for her tests and also the wkshts in discussion. She has an accent but she is the nicest professor. Just make sure you pay attention in class and pay attention to what she writes on the board.
Dr. Schmeling is so nice! She is conscious of her accent and makes it a point to make sure everyone understands the content. She is extremely enthusiastic and helpful during her office hours! Get to know her, during Discussion she's very helpful as well.
Very nice lady and made class straightforward. Nothing to di her- she really deserves a higher rating.
She is so nice, and her class is as easy as it gets for chemistry. All multiple choice tests, with very simple content. However, i felt unprepared with a different teacher the next semester.
Super clear professor! Lectures are well-prepped. Discussion -> worksheets that hint at what'll be on the exam. MUST GO TO ALL DISCUSSIONS AND LECTURES! She really isn't challenging, though. She's good for a REVIEW class if you took AP, but not the best to learn gen. chem. the 1st time around. Too easy, and won't prep you for future chem classes.
She is extremely nice and caring - she made a point at the beginning of the semester to incorporate our interests into her lesson plan! The class can get a bit dry, but as long as you make sure to pay attention, it's not very difficult.
Very nice professor, clear with her lectures and all her notes cover the material on the test. Would definitely recommend as an introductory chemistry class to first time students.
It's clear she wants her students to do well. Sometimes she's a bit confusing in class but clears up any confusion during discussion or office hours. She assigns quite a bit hw but if you do it all then it's great practice. She says exactly what to study for exams and they aren't as hard as majority of the other chem 101 exams. I recommend her! :)
She's really sweet and likes to teach but isn't very clear on assignments or what material is going to be covered. If you take her make sure you read the book to truly understand the material.
Schmeling is such a nice Professor. I even interview her for another class and got to know her better. She is very good about answering questions you have and explaining any confusing concepts. My TA from Chem 111 lab worked with her and he helped me at times as well. You need to put the time in to study otherwise it will be difficult.
Professor Schmeling is extremely sweet and an expert in the area studied. Her tests can get a little tricky, as they are over a lot of information, but if you study hard you could get an A. By far the best honors professor I've had so far.
The most fair chemistry professor I have had at Loyola - she is a complete sweetheart, she really cares about her students and goes the extra mile to make sure we are understanding the material and have all the materials to succeed on her tests and quizzes. I love her and would take her for every Chem course if I could! Also not too much mastering
Schemling is a really nice professor but I wouldn't recommend her for first time chem learners. If you have taken AP chem in high school, then Schmeling is good for review but if you're learning the material for the first time, it'll be difficult with her as a professor. There's 3 easy exams, she drops the lowest one. All her exams are REALLY easy.
I wanted to really like Schmeling but I only sort of liked her. Her tests are relatively easy and they're multiple choice but she's not super clear on the material and what's going to be on the exam. However, she does drop one exam and all quizzes are online!
honestly one of the rudest professors i've ever had here. she won't call on you in lecture if you have a question and in discussion, her only answer to your questions is "oh that's easy." if you have already learned everything covered in this class she isn't that hard but not a good choice for someone just learning this materia
Dr. Schmeling is a great person, but her teaching style didn't really suit me. During lectures, she'll talk about one topic then go into another where I'm suddenly lost in information. However, it is important to be in class because she does a lot of examples which mimic her exams. As long as you follow along with the examples, you'll do fine.
She is pretty nice, but I didn't love her teaching style. She would post some PPTs online, but in class she mostly did a series of practice problems on the board with little structure or connection between them. She gave infrequent but long assignments, which was not very helpful to me. She hardly told us anything to help us prepare for tests.
Not my favorite lecturer, but her exams are really easy and straightforward. Go to class because exams are based on board problems that are not on the ppts. She also discussion worksheets and online quizzes where the problems are similar to the ones of her exams. Drops one exam and the final is cumulative. Mostly calculations on her exams.
Dr. Schmeling is a gem. She really cares about her students. I took her for Honors 204D - our grades were based on 3 exams (drop the lowest) and a final paper. The class is very lecture heavy and I took it at 8:30am so it was a little tough to stay awake. She does try to make it interesting. She also has the sweetest heavy German accent. 10/10.
Dr Schmeling is a real sweetheart! Her lectures got dry at times, but overall very interesting and her German accent is adorable. We learned a lot but by no means was the class hard. 3 exams w/ lowest dropped plus a final paper. The subject matter was catered to the class and she really tried her best to make sure everyone enjoyed the class!
A lot of people don't like her, but she's good compared to all the other chemistry professors. The exams are hard, and the lectures aren't perfect; but if you pay attention, go to discussions, and do the homework, you'll pass. She drops your lowest midterm. Study for the first AND second midterm, theyre easier; the third is the hardest midterm.
Dr. Schmeling is definitely one of the better professors in the Chemistry department. Her lectures were mainly practice problems, but never really explaining why things were to be done that certain way. She is a nice prof but does not seem to care much for her students. Show up to discussion and do the work and you should be fine.
Answers questions and explains well. Study in class examples & practice test for the final. Drops worst non-final exam.
I loved Dr. Schmeling. She's one of the best chem professors at loyola. Her lectures were very straight forward. As long as you show up to class, take notes, and go to discussion you'll do well. The test questions are mostly all discussion or example problems from class. 4 tests including the final. She drops one.
Super sweet!! Tests are basically practice problems from discussion and class. I hope to take her again soon!!
Easiest honors class I've had so far! 3 exams with the lowest dropped, plus a 5 page final paper instead of an exam. No outside work besides reading the occasional article. A very nice professor, and she made the material interesting and relevant.
Even if you don't do well on her exams, she gives you lots of credit for homework and discussion quizzes. I wish her class wasn't so early because its so enjoyable just not at 8am
By far the hardest class I've taken at Loyola in my two years here. Lectures are unclear and unhelpful. No S.I. was available for assistance. Discussions were tedious with little help available. Exams are multiple choice yet very complicated and it is impossible to prepare for them.
I loved having Dr. S lectures are clear for the most part. If you are coming from AP chem the class is a great review, and she is a great choice for people who are doing chem for the first time!
Dr. Schmeling is a nice person but her class is the hardest I've ever taken. There's no textbook and it's all based on lectures, which are confusing. There are no SI sessions and it's hard to meet with her outside class. Discussion sessions are not helpful if you don't understand concepts. I've had to struggle through entirely on my own.
Such a sweet woman. Exams are 100% multiple choice and no homework. Honestly felt like it shouldve been harder, I feel a little underprepared for next semester, but a wonderful woman and teacher. She really cares.
No emotions. My dad's aunt passed away in California on Sunday night- and I couldn't make it to the discussion portion of the class. I went to the funeral on the afternoon of Monday and I came back home late night on Monday. She says that I need to make a better excuse, excuse me family emergency? Strong German Accent, can't understand a word.
DO NOT TAKE!!! most difficult class I've ever taken. she admitted that only 2 people in the class had an A, which is more than most years where no one does. only 3 grades were in the gradebook at the end of the year: all impossibly difficult exams. other professors will set you up for success!! she won't!!!
Dr. S seems like a sweet woman, but is completely unavailable for help. She constantly relies on past lectures and makes many mistakes. If you arent the best at chem DO NOT TAKE HER. No quizzes or homework. Makes it clear teaching isnt her main priority. So dont expect much effort or help from her.
Barely audible in lecture and kind of rude. Office hours only for one hour a week for a huge lecture class and will not meet with you outside of them. Not understanding and doesn't care to help her students. She made me feel kinda dumb when I went to ask questions. Loyola chem dept. needs work, not accommodating at all
Schmeling is one of the better chem professors, she's a good lecturer but she's a bit hard to hear so I recommend sitting closer to the front. Her test policy helped with the difficulty of the course; she drops the lowest test, tests are all multiple choice, and she allows for a crib sheet. If you're willing to put in the effort, take her.
I took Dr. Schmeling for quantitative analysis and she is honestly so good. All the exams are open note and based on the discussions. It can be kind of hard to understand her at times but as long as you go to the discussions you will be fine. She is so sweet and I highly recommend her.
She really cares about her students and her field. As long as you attend lectures and write exactly what she said in lectures on the test you will be fine. Discussions are the most important.
love dr. schmeling!!! super interesting class for honors science&society. 3 exam papers, lowest one is dropped. not super super focused on lectures, but they are good material presented in layman's terms. she is focused on making science accessible! poster-style final + attendance/participation grade. super sweet and tries to engage students!
Love her! Her lectures were very interesting and she's so sweet. 3 exam papers which consist of reading a research article and answering a couple questions on it. Final was a poster project. You don't really need to go to the lecture, but the content is really interesting. 10/10 take her if you can
