She's a jerk and her handwriting is chicken scratch.
She is kinda crazy and sometimes what she says doesn't make sense, but she will answer questions.
Can't understand what she's saying because she talks too fast. Can't understand what she's writing because of how terrible her handwriting is. She's not very pleasant or eager to help; she's very patronizing
Chemistry sucks as it is. But Sumner is not a good professor, try taking someone else for sure. And her handwriting is absolute garbage!...I studied chem in my own, which is how I pulled off a B, I watched videos online etc. Professor didn't help much at all.
Sumner is abysmal. Her handwriting is illegible, and she fails to fully explain concepts. When asked a question in the lecture, more often than not she criticizes the student for the question in front of the entire class. She is far, far below the quality of professors I expected when I came to a major university. Avoid her classes at all costs.
She wasn't TOO bad...i mean her quizzes were easy but she doesn't have the best handwriting and she is horrible at explaining the concepts. I NEVER go to class cause the lectures don't help...just read the book and do the EOC and practice tests and you'll do fine...really an A is super doable
Sumner isn't terrible. She's a very nice lady and willing to help, especially during office hours. Her handwriting is terrible though. You cannot rely on just the class to pass, and will need to use the book and every problem that she assigns to pass. Chemistry is tough however, and it is also difficult to teach over 300 students in each class.
Sumner, sumner, sumner...ehhh. She is not a very good teacher. Her handwriting is chicken scratch and sometimes with her German accent can be difficult to understand. She is horrible at explaining things so I recommend to just do the EOC questions, use other professor's notes like Caughran's and read the book.
Dr. Sumner isn't a bad teacher. Sometimes she rambles about Ochem, but it's just to help you understand the concepts. Overall, she does explain well, and her quizzes aren't bad. Some weeks she even gives you a heads up on when the next quizz is, and she tells you exactly what will be on it.
She goes over the basic material you need to know for the exams but be prepared to do a lot of studying on your own. She seemed very approachable and helped if you went to her office hours. She's honestly probably one of the best teachers you can get for a subject that most people find boring.
She's not as bad as everyone's been saying. I mean, she's not the best professor, but she's certainly not the worst. She's nice and is actually willing to stop the lecture of over 300 students to answer a question. Also, since it's chemistry we're talking about, it's gonna be challenging no matter which professor you have.
Good teacher for a hard subject. Great with office hours help.
she isnot as bad as everyone is saying. she does a lot of example problems in class that helps a lot. her writing sucks sometimes but .. this isnt a "lets judge her writing" kinda class. read the text. do the work. and you will be fine!
If you can get another professor for chem, you probably should, but Sumner is not going to ruin your life. She's very approachable and willing to help. She will answer your question in a 300-student lecture. I didn't do any non-required studying in this class, and made a B+ with NO prior chemistry experience.
Sumner is an O.K professor. She is helpful when it comes to j-exam homework because she works problems in class and she is also helpful for labs but her writing is terrible so you really have to pay attention to what she is saying otherwise you'll miss what was written overall she is pretty good professor just hard to understand.
there are better choices for chem. I don't recommend!
Chemistry is hard and Dr. Sumner is awesome! She is always willing to help with anything you're having trouble with. HIGHLY reccomend. The only bad thing I can say about her is that she has awful handwriting--but she will decipher if you ask.
She moves very fast and its hard to keep up. She has AWFUL handwriting. in a 400 person class her computer was messed up so she wrote on her small blackboard so i got NO notes and before I could get them she gave us a pop quiz the next day! She will answer your questions, but she will embarras you and make you feel stupid. her notes contradict lab
She works quickly, but will slow down when asked to do so. She is a bit abrupt when answering questions, but wants to help. I suggest asking for help after class rather than in the lecture. She wants to make the most of the time she has to lecture and uses every second of it.
Sumner isn't the best chemistry teacher. VERY sloppy handwriting and simply glosses over subjects without any care if the class understood the concept. I have gone up to her after class and asked about a concept we covered and she looked at me and said "Well, you tell me." Terrible professor--be prepared to do a lot of outside studying to catch up!
I love Dr. Sumner. She's funny. She has hideous handwriting and goes very quickly, but only because there's a lot of material. Before the tests, if you can do the Jexam homeworks and the pre-tests w/o using your notes, you'll be fine on the exams. Go to class and pay attention. She really is good at teaching Chemistry. It's just not an easy course.
Sumner is an Awesome teeacher. She goes over whatever will be on the test. She does practices in class. I would take her next semester.
She goes through the lecture really fast so if you don't write fast, be aware. If you listen though, the homework is easy. Pop quizzes are usually on Fridays, but every once in a while she gives them earlier in the week.
Sumner's handwriting is very hard to read, but if you pay attention, the class isn't hard. She has a slight accent, but I never had any trouble understanding her. There's homework almost every week on Jexam and frequent pop quizzes in class, sometimes more than one in a day, so it's a good idea to come every day and stay the whole time.
Sumner is a pretty terrible teacher all together, she glosses over all of the topics, and only reads from the powerpoints. When she does write on the powerpoints to so you a concept, her terribly handwriting is too hard to read. Take all the practice tests you can to succede in this class.
Chem is hard. That's the bottom line. Dr. Sumner knows her stuff and gets the point across. She does multiple examples, but goes extremely quickly. I don't like that she simply reads from powerpoints, instead of fully explaining a concept, but if you study, you'll be ok. There is homework every weeks, as well as pop quizzes close to each week.
Chemistry is hard, but sumner is the best professor compared to all the others. There are 3 tests and 10-12 pop quizzes. We had homework each week as well.
Read the textbook and practice problems and you will pass the class. Pay attention during lectures and you might do well. She is willing to help you in person but expects you to do your part to keep up. She has an accent but it didn't bother me. Her handwriting isn't a problem only as long as you're following along. Pop quizzes! Fast pace course.
Sumner is a good teacher. You really just need to read the text book, follow the problems in class, study the powerpoints and practice tests. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW TO DO THE PRACTICE TEST. THEY ARE EXACTLY LIKE THE REAL TEST!
Let's be honest, 1211 is a hard class. Sumner seems scared of teaching in front of such a large group and her handwriting is atrocious, but really if you show up to lecture and study her powerpoints you will be good to go. She's not the best, but she's a better option.
Looking back this class was better than I actually though. Her quizzes were fairly difficult in comparisons to other classes but the tests were identical to the practice tests so they weren't bad. Attendance was crucial for this class because she gave pop quizzes and one never knew when they were. If possible, I would take a different section.
She has a bit of an accent and bad handwriting, which makes her a little hard to understand, but she will go back over anything that was unclear and is very helpful during office hours. She knows the material and is very understanding with her students. You will hear a lot of people criticize, but only because the subject can be hard. I recommend.
She is kind of difficult to understand, especially since I have no interest in this subject but had to take it for a prerequisite. I used Study Edge to help me better understand the concepts, but Sumner makes her exams just like the practice ones so it isn't too difficult to get a good grade. Go to class tho because there are random quizzes.
Out of all the chem teachers here she by far the best one in my opinion both for 1211 and 1212. She explains the subject much better than the others and is willing to help. There are random pop quizzes.
She is the best chem 1211 and 1212 teacher at UGA. Her classes can get boring, but the lectures will help you do the homework. The practice tests are often similar to the real tests, so this makes it easier to get a good grade. She now does clicker questions, so you have to show up for every classes to get a 100 quiz average
CHEM will be hard, tests are made by all prof in the dept who are teaching 1212 that semester. However, Sumner makes great lecture slides and shows you how to do hw problems in lecture. Uses clicker questions throughout lecture to take attendance instead of pop quizzes. TIP: You can get away with using 8th ed text. CHEAPER.
CHEM is tough, but Sumner makes it bearable because she wants you to UNDERSTAND, not simply memorize. Go to class b/c she does use clickers for grades. Sit at the front and you can ask q's whenever. Go to office hours-- esp. for HW since she WILL help you understand it! She is easily the BEST gen chem teacher at UGA so take Sumner if you can
Dr. Sumner is great; I took her for 1211 and 1212. Chemistry is tough and requires lots of studying, but I learned a lot, thanks to her. Like others have said, her handwriting is hard to read, but other than that, I have no complaints. She truly cares about her students and is very helpful. Study hard, do the practice tests, and take Sumner!
Sumner is a great professor! Chem is going to be difficult no matter who you have, but Sumner is great at explaining the concepts and is extremely helpful! She has a good sense of humor and cares about helping her students succeed. Definitely take Sumner for freshman chemistry!
Sumner is a good professor. She knows chemistry and is good at teaching to students. However, she could work on her attitude and patience. She is easily frustrated with students for asking questions that she thinks they should already know the answer to, and makes them feel bad for asking. If she had more patience and understanding she'd be great.
She has a microphone (but doesn't seem to know its not on),can't write, talks fast, and does "Clicker Questions" during lecture and they are worth 2.5% of your grade so you must come. Homework on eLC New and uses OWL for assignments but you need an access code which you can get @ cengage dot com under "For Students: Online Resources" & there's a vid
Literally the best chem teacher you will take at UGA. She knows how to teach. Chem was awesome because of her.
Dr. Sumner is a very skilled and knowledgeable teacher. She truly knows chemistry and although she is quite quick and rapid in her delivery during lectures, comprehension is almost always possible. She can be a bit impatient, her handwriting can get messy and illegible, her frustration can get frustrating, but her accent doesn't interfere greatly.
Really great teacher but moves very quickly. Overall I liked her a lot.
Sumner is overall a good teacher. She goes really fast during lecture but her notes are online. You have to come to class for clicker questions but they are generally really easy. Tests are usually pretty tough. Remember: Chem is a hard class regardless of the teacher.
Sumner is a great teacher! She goes a little fast but i understood everything pretty well. Make sure you study your lecture notes outside of class! and use her office hours. Overall i believe she's tough but a great professor and she really does want her students to learn.
Chemistry is a difficult course but Sumner tries her best to explain the concepts to us. She's always willing to help so if you are having trouble, just stop by her office. Her handwriting, on the other hand, is not that great and we are always struggling to read it during lecture.
Sumner is really nice and better than the other options for 1211. It's chemistry so it's going to be hard, however she goes the most over what will actually be on the test. If you attend class and study you'll be fine. She says that you'll use the textbook but I didn't one time. I would just buy the OWL access code instead of the whole entire thing
Sumner is sassy and fabulous. Doesn't ramble. To the point. As far as lecture classes go, this one was my favorite.
Dr. Sumner is a brisk woman who moves quickly and doesn't mince words. I personally liked her teaching style, but as others have stated her handwriting is difficult to read. If you have a problem, I would suggest not emailing her, but instead go to her office hours.
She's a good teacher, but the class was kind of dull. I took AP Chem in high school, so the class was fairly easy for me. Go to lectures because of clicker qs and the lecture notes are helpful enough when reviewing for tests. Sign up for earlier test dates. She's a bit sarcastic; sometimes it's funny, but she can also come off as an ass
Worse class ever. Worse teacher I've ever had. Went to office hours and felt like she was annoyed by my presence. Tests are ridiculous and unrelated to homework, which is difficult and time consuming.
The class is a little boring- but it's chemistry after all. She realizes that this isn't everyone's favorite class, and tries to keep it interesting. The class is mostly review from high school. Only complaint is that she starts teaching the next unit before you take the last unit's test.
Sumner was a decent teacher and I understood everything in class, as well as the homework. The test were ridiculously hard, but the whole department takes the same test. I don't feel like the practice in class, or the homework prepared me for the test. I also don't think that was entirely her fault.
Do not take Sumner if you're prone to violence. Her class will challenge your passion for science. Her handwriting requires Rosetta Stone 1, 2 & 3 to interpret. There is no point in going to class because the tests are made by youtube comment trolls. By sacrificing thots to Lil B the Based God and pure spiteful determination I made an A.
Chem 1211 was hard, but not impossible, Sumner talks quickly and writes badly, but is willing to go over things again if you're having trouble. I always felt uncomfortable at office hours, but she's super fast at emailing. Clicker questions during lecture count a bit towards your grade, exams are difficult, homework counts a bit to the grade.
I am currently taking CHEMISTRY 1212. The class is honestly not that difficult; you must keep up with your work but otherwise, it is possible. Be careful when taking the exams and be sure to ask questions when there is any concept or subject that is unclear. I like chemistry. Therefore, you can enjoy the class once you get the hang of it.
Forget all your other classes. Class is super hard. She goes super fast, hand writing is horrible, and tests are cryptic. You think you know what you're doing until you get to her test. She'll rarely negotiate giving points back to you. As far as helpfulness, when I went to ask her a question about something I did not understand, she laughed at me.
DO NOT TAKE SUMNER. she does not care and plays games. She goes too fast in class but do not skip, you NEED to go if you want a chance in at least making a 60.Office hours: she does care if you are doing bad in her class and she will probably recommend you drop.Don't bother trying to fix your grade for an assignment, she will talk her way out of it.
She cares about the students. If you go to office hours she will try and help you. The class is just near impossible to pass. It's not her fault. She repeats in class so you can learn through the repetition and her CQs are pretty helpful. But don't be fooled. The homework and class questions are nothing like the test.
honestly if you want your GPA to take a nose dive then take this class and if you're smart enough change your major and run as far away from chemistry as possible.
Sumner is knowledgeable and lectures okay, but isn't very helpful one-on-one if you are struggling. The "Why don't you get this!!?" type. Doesn't matter the teacher though, class is still very very tough. MUST MUST MUST study an insane amount. Get a tutor early. One bad test grade and you're screwed. Don't underestimate this department...it's bad.
Sumner was an awesome person by herself and was a great professor! It was the material and the fact that the chemistry department switched teaching methods that made this class ridiculously hard this semester. She is always willing to help and loves when people answer her questions in class. Be prepared to work hard in this class. It'll test you.
Sumner is very nice. She will answer your questions. chem is not that hard. Study, read the book, do the chapter problems and keep up with your work.
She really is a great professor and I would recommend her over the other 1211 teachers. She moves quick, but as long as you pay attention it isn't that hard to follow along. She jokes around sometimes, but is also very focused in class. You really do have to work for your grade, so don't overlook that. STUDY STUDY STUDY.
Sumner is the best CHEM 1211 teacher in my opinion, but the class is still very difficult. Tests are hard. Homework and progress check due every week. She explains the math extremely well, no chance of confusion. But she doesn't explain the general concepts behind the math very well, which means I had to rely on book for that.
Chemistry sucks here, but she helps a lot. She's really clear, but all the clicker questions are annoying. Tests are HARD, but that's just the department.
The Chem department here is absolutely terrible. But that seems to be the case with all schools. Sumner really does care though. You can tell she loves to teach and that she loves chemistry. She will help if you ask, but just be clear on what you are asking. The class itself is really hard. You have to put in the effort or you will not pass.
Look, shes tough. You dont get ANY slack and the tests are almost impossible.
People like to bash on Sumner, but she really wasn't that bad. She is UGA's best 1211 professor in my opinion. Yeah, the class is hard... but that's because chemistry is hard. Sumner does an excellent job of getting the material across. If you have a choice, pick her.
The Chemistry department at UGA is just awful, but she is better than the other professors. She is funny and sassy, but the class is very hard especially if you did not take AP Chem. This class will stress you out that you will drop the class or change your major like many. If you are not a science person you will probably fail if you don't drop it
Isn't an easy class but not bc of the teacher. She is very helpful and if the entire class doesn't get something, she'll continue to explain it. People complain about chemistry, but they're not willing to put in the effort. It's very manageable(even if taking 15hrs) if you space out assignments and manage time well. Will be your most demanding class
Dr. Sumner is tough at first. The class gets dramatically easier after the Withdrawal deadline. Read the book and do all (even the even) End of Chapter problems. Go to the office hours and ask questions. She is helpful and much less intimidating in office hours.
Ok so Chem 1211 is stuff. Like really, really tough if you are not willing to commit 1-2 hours EACH AND EVERY day. I mean seriously, you need to keep on top. But Professor Sumner was incredibly nice, very intelligent, and willing to help you. Of the professors in Chemistry, she is by far the most accurate, willing to help you and explain problems.
A lot of students don't like Sumner, but it's not her. It's the material. Classes are fast paced, because there is a lot of material to cover. Tests are hard, but the Chem department creates the them, so it's not her fault. Tests are administered through WebAssign, so answers have to be exact. Take my advice, and devote time to this class.
It's not an easy class, but most science related majors require it. Sumner helps as much as she can for a 350 lecture, but I understand that it's tough. Just go to class, consistently study, and utilize her office hours.
1211 is not an easy class, nor is 1212. her homeworks are due every monday instead of prelecture which i really like. study hard, pay attention, youll do just fine buttercup.
Lectures are boring because Dr. Sumner reads straight off Power Points she posts to elc, yet you still need to attend class for clicker questions. Homework and a progress check (a quiz you typically have 30-45 minutes to do) online every week, but your grade is based mostly on the exams (and they're HARD). Do all the problems in the textbook!
shes honestly the best teacher for any gen chem class. she explains things way better than any other professors. if you have to take this class, take it with her.
Advice: Read the chapters ahead of time, take notes before class time (posted on elc), do the homework early since it is the easiest thing in the class, work on end of chapter problems, answers can be found in office hours (take picture of solutions), review the material every night. ask questions during office hours since class is BIG. GOOD LUCK!!
Sumner is a good professor, but the class itself is just a tough class to take. She has a good sense of humor, but she does call out the class if they haven't done the 'reading'. Class seemed kind of like a chore because of the clicker questions, but she did work out a lot of problems to help people understand the content.
Chemistry is tough. Period. I was super nervous about the class in general. Then, after making a 56 on the first test, I accepted my fate as screwed; however, after the midterm withdrawl, my confidence and class enjoyment was boosted and ended up with a B in the class. Love Prof. Sumner's sass, though her accent is sometimes thick.
Chemistry is tough regardless, but Sumner teaches the material pretty well and is very helpful if you utilize office hours. However, definitely a class where you need to put in effort.
The class is rough, not necessarily the professor. Dr. Sumner tries to help her students as much as she can, but CHEM 1112 is a poorly designed course. Basically, you sign up for an in-class course, yet every single graded assignment is online. Take honors if you can. Attendance is important.
Dr. Sumner is an amazing professor. She tries to keep class engaged with clicker questions. Visiting her office hours for clarification on solutions to end of chapter questions and actually doing them little by little before the test should be enough to secure a good grade in this class.
Ya wanna get an A here. Well, Good luck.
Sumner is definitely the professor to choose if you are provided a choice. Class is hard regardless, but Sumner provides you with everything you need to pass the class. You HAVE TO put effort into this class. Always work the End of Chapter questions and review progress checks!
It's fast pace, and there are little-to-no options in avoiding timed, standardized questions. By far the hardest class I've had to take. Prof. Sumner tells you everything you should study, but I have to meet with a tutor almost every day to understand even half. The book is unclear but it's the real teacher here. If you don't have to take it, DON'T
Basically the UGA chem department sucks and this chem class will be really tough, especially if you are taking it as a freshman. Go to tutoring and try not to fall behind.
Dr. Sumner is such a great teacher and friend. Most people who complain about her have never even tried to say hello. If you go to her office hours with questions she is always eager to help you and is never condescending like some professors can be. Yes, the class is hard but chemistry is hard so it will help you build work ethic. Read. Practice.
To all those who have to take CHEM 1211 and are terrified: It is really not that bad. Read the book, go to class, do the end of chapter questions, take notes, and rework old progress checks and tests. Sumner posts in ELC EXACTLY what you need to do to make a good grade. It gets so much easier after the withdrawal deadline.
Gen Chem is a hard class. That's the reality of it. You're going to have to work extremely hard to get a good grade, but Sumner can help you with that. She is usually pretty clear in lectures and very helpful with clicker points. She is also really helpful and nice during office hours. As long as you read, go to class, and do EOCs you will be fine.
This class is hard no matter what, but Sumner gives you everything. She posts all homework online- and do every bit of it. Read the book, do end of chapter problems, look over powerpoint slides, do example problems, watch the videos, etc. Whatever she posts on elc be sure to do it and understand it- and you'll be fine.
Dr. Sumner is one of the best Freshman Chemistry teachers you can get. The material isn't necessarily that difficult, but she gives a lot of homework and the tests are death unless you study consistently. Her sass is entertaining but sit with a buddy so you don't doze off when her lectures get a little dry.
Dr. Sumner was a great teacher! Chemistry is hard but I think she did a great job teaching the subject. Progress checks (online quizzes) can be difficult but shes a good lecturer and the homework and final are easy and boost your great.
Do all the reading and all the homework and you will do fine in this class. Sumner does her best to cover the main topics during class and she does a great job doing so. There are a lot of clicker questions through out the class.
Sumner is the best chem teacher you can take. Chem is a hard class, but Sumner can make it easier. She's helpful, clear, and uses a lot of examples. Try not to skip lectures because they're helpful. She even throws in the occasional joke. If you have to take chem, you might take the most helpful teacher: Sumner!
She is one of the best teachers that you can take for chemistry and extremely nice! She's very good at explaining the information, the only thing is that her examples are mostly basic problems and not always the application problems given on the test. Do end of chapter questions, go to class, and look over progress checks and you should be okay!
Chemistry just take A LOT of practice to go from simply memorizing to understanding. Sumner is really helpful when you go to her, funny lady, too. I suggest reading and taking good notes prior to class (also use the PPTs she posts, they have most of the clicker q's and let you know what is important). During lecture, write add'l notes in margins.
she is better than the rest
Sumner is actually the best intro chemistry here. I had her and initially thought it could be better, but after learning of the other professors, I was more than appreciative. Chem 1211 is just a lot of material in only a semester and Sumner is the best you can get.
You have 3 classes a week, 50min each class. Don't expect to be taught all of the material in class. Read before class. Do the end of chapter questions (EOC). Dr. Sumner is the best chem prof out of the ones there. She is sassy in class but the sweetest person in office hours. Study EOC questions/previous progress checks and you can make an A.
Chem 1211 is a soul shattering experience at UGA given the nature of the class- online tests and progress checks and a lot of material in a single semester- but if you listen to Dr. Sumner and do all the EOC's you will be fine. Of all the Chem 1211 teachers, Sumner is the best option.
This class is difficult, but gets better after the withdrawal deadline. Dr. Sumner was a huge help. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She is always willing to help and loves to see her students do well. She seems like the best of the chem professors from what I have heard. The average rating is most likely due to how hard the class is, but the professor is great
Chemistry, especially at UGA, is going to be hard. Dr. Sumner did a really good job teaching the subject matter and covers everything you need to know. Just make sure to do exactly what she tells you to do and don't get behind.
Sumner really cares about the success of her students. The class, admittedly, is difficult. However, it does get easier after the drop/add deadline. Do ALL the EOC's (can't stress this enough) and review progress checks and you'll be okay. The exams are administered on computers.
Seems very intimidating at first; however, in terms of quality of teaching, she is definitely the best. If you have any questions, she is always happy to help and will work with you through any problems you may be having. She makes sure you understand the material before the test and is able to cover everything the tests cover.
Out of the Gen Chem professors, Sumner is the best! It is a tough course, but if you put in the work you'll be fine. She is very nice and helpful in office hours.
This is a flipped class room, so get ready to do work outside of class. If you do everything she tells you to do you will pass. Go through her slides before class (most of the clicker questions are on there).
Chemistry is always going to be hard at UGA, but I would really recommend taking Dr. Sumner. You have to go to class if you want clicker points, but she drops a ton of grades anyway that really boost your grade. The best way to tackle progress checks are to work in small groups and to do them one at a time. Make sure to either read or do EOCs.
She's the best CHEM1211 professor at UGA. She is a good teacher as well as being humorous and nice to the students. Obviously have to go to class for clicker points. Tests are hard, but it's chemistry; you have to put in some work. She works out problems nicely on the screen and will go over them for people who don't understand.
Dr. Sumner is the best chemistry professor in the department. Go to her office hours and you will pass. She moves quick, so work the powerpoint questions before class so that you can keep up.
Dr. Sumner is the best Gen Chem Professor. Take her over any of the others I promise you wont regret. Read the textbook, do the end of chapter questions, you will do better if you do all she asked. I never do all the EOCs but when I do tests are easier. Chem is hard at UGA regardless but your chances of passing are better with her.
Sumner's super sweet and her sass provides some comic relief, but her class is deceptively difficult. Beware the tests. Progress checks should be done in groups. Office hours are super helpful.
I do not understand why Dr. Sumner does not have a higher rating. In Chem 1211, I took Pienta and hated going to class. When I switched, I began to enjoy lectures and make As on tests. She explains the material very well, so go to class. You still need to read the book, but Dr. Sumner's lectures sum up each chapter very well. FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS
Chemistry at UGA is going to be hard no matter what. Take the clicker questions, PLAs and Progress checks seriously because those can make the difference between passing and failing. Never do a progress check alone. Understand that you can fail a test and still pass the class with a good grade. Dr. Sumner is great and will give you help. Ask early.
I didn't really like her at first, but she's actually a really nice professor. Her teaching style doesn't match mine, but I still got high B, low A! I would say she's pretty sassy, but she's not condescending. She's really nice, so try to go to one of her office hours! Love Dr. Sumner! Take her!
Didn't know any chemistry coming in, but now I'm basically a chemist.
I had Caughran for 1211, and I felt that Sumner was a better instructor. She explains concepts pretty well, and it was a shame that so many people talked over her when she was trying to teach. 1212 does feel easier than 1211, but make sure you do all of your PC's and PLA's. Tests are not bad as long as you know what was on the progress checks.
Chemistry is definitely not my subject but I'd say Sumner is a good professor. She's very helpful: posts videos, links, and more on ELC for extra help, will always help during office hours, and tries to keep students engaged in lectures.
Your average professor where you have to teach yourself everything before you get to class. Don't expect to get points back if you make any small errors on progress checks, such as putting commas instead of or signs. The only good teacher teaching this course so if you study hard and do all the example problems you can, you should be fine.
Sumner is one of the best professors I've had. She makes the information easy to understand. Her tests are hard, but if you study, it's manageable.
If I had to go back and take chem again, I would definitely still choose Dr. Sumner. The material is hard and fast paced, but she does a good job explaining it. Put a good amount of studying into this class and you will do fine.
Dr. Sumner is one of the most (if not only) respectable professors in the Chemistry department. Her lectures are clearly explained and she is always willing to help you. I would take her again in a heartbeat. Anyone looking to take Chem 1211/1212, Dr. Sumner should be your only option. She is an advocate for her students' success; overall awesome.
Dr. Sumner is one of my favorite professors. By far the best chemistry professor. The difficulty of the class has nothing to do with her, it is just the way gen chem is set up. She is always willing to help you in office hours and loves getting to know her students. She can be super sassy and straightforward with you, but I think its great.
I had Sumner for both 1211/1212 and regret not going to office hours more since she's so darn nice and helpful. She is the fairest and clearest of all of the gen chem prof in my and others' opinions. She posts her class powerpoints ahead of class and if you just go through&read them, take notes, even work out the problems, you'll do well. uwork4it
Dr. Sumner is by far the best professor to have for general chemistry at UGA. The class itself is hard and you will have to work for it, but Sumner makes sure everything that will be on the test is covered during class. I only regret not going to office hours.
Dr. Sumner is definitely the professor to take general chemistry with. I had her over the summer, so the course was fast-paced, but she made sure to cover all of the material, answer questions, and go over problems that were troublesome (as determined by clickers). While gen chem is difficult in general, she makes it doable.
Sumner has taught me a lot during my freshman year of college ( 5 years ago). Now, I am about to graduate with a Pharm D degree! The class is doable. The exams were similar to old exams ( wink wink), and she gives out generous extra credits ( up to 10-15 points on webassign exams). Show up to class every day, you will definitely get at least a B+.
She's horrible. Avoid having her at all costs. She rushes through lectures and does way to many clicker questions. Doesn't explain things well and moves way to fast. Her handwriting is despicable and nobody can read it.
If you have the option, take Gower over Sumner. I'm not sure how their teaching styles compare, but Gower definitely gives more useful HW assignments as well as more attempts on quizzes. Sumner gives way too many clicker questions in lecture with very little explanation. Study Edge is a must with this class.
She would often break down and yell at the class calling us "kindergardeners" when we did not immediately understand topics.
Flipped classroom so self taught basically. Do not take if not chemistry background.
The flipped classroom was kind of tough but study edge helped so much!
She doesn't give a lot of work. She gave the usual things common professors give like pre- lecture hws, hw and quizzes. In my honesty opinion, the hws and quizzes were very similar to the exam. I didn't need to use study edge because of them and how she explained in the lectures. She drops a lot of points. Would take her again if ever!
Do not take Sumner, she is honestly one of the worst professors i have ever encountered. Her personality is petty (to not be profane) and her tests have no correlation to the difficulty of her lectures. The lectures are passable by a 5th grader, yet her tests are exponentially more difficult. She provides little outside sources to prep for exams.
Sumner as a professor basically forces you to improve your study habits (personally, she has done that for me). Her Canvas quizzes, discussion quizzes, and PLVs are similar to the exams. Her classes are consistently the highest for exam grade averages and the course is worth 80% for exams. You don't really need StudyEdge.
