I dod not like this class at all!
Expects us to be at his level.
Great for upper level math classes. He demands a lot though.
extreme Type A personality and really CORNY
This man sucks at life
Seems to hate life. Hateful towards students. He made me want to leave furman.
incredibly sarcastic and degrading, i have lost all confidence in math ability

LOVES life. Hilarious. BEST prof at FU. Those who dislike need to find a sense of humor.
really bad teacher altogether. very unhelpful, very corny, very degrading, and was unnecessarily confusing at times...everything I learned I taught myself
good at explaining things and will explain it over and over and over if u just don't get it. very nice. available out of class if you need extra help. he's hard, but a good teacher. he makes sure you know your stuff.
Purposely makes tests that no one will finish! But he accounts for this in his grading and half the class ended up in the A range. Not good at answering questions in class.
Worst teacher yet
Best advice: tests are very long, so work fast to get tons of partial credit (don't worry about actually FINISHING problems). Don't ask stupid questions in class, go to his office after. Bring colored writing utensils. A master of mathematics pedagogy.
very very odd man
Tests are difficult to complete in the time given. Not nice answering questions in class. Gives extra credit. Not extemely difficult, not too personable, but not a bad class if you keep up.

worst teacher ive had in my educational history
I used to like math before this class. Then I took calculus with this man and everything changed. Tests are ridiculously long, make sure you do the extra credit, it'll save your grade. Horrible with questions, very corny and odd.
This is a bad teacher. He is very bad. He makes corny jokes, and his extra credit is dumb. Dumb all around.
condesending--look at the level of the students who gave him smileys; his elitist tendencies make him the worst teacher @ furman and in my educational history
Quite a difficult teacher. He seems to take a certain pleasure in embarrassing and failing his students
All previous comments come from intro students who want math to be easy. Most helpful professor i have had, but you have to ask, and you have to respond to his offers for help. Very smart and very passionate, and extremely extremely clear and concise.
I almost didn't take this class because I heard so many bad things about Cook. None of them are true, he is a great teacher and extremely fair. I have him for math 12 so I suppose if you are taking a lower level math maybe he is more difficult.
One of my best subjects is math, but I'm not a math major and never had calc. I hated this man's class...he was extremely degrading and did not TEACH...and I had him for math 10 and likes math. I hear he's better w/ other math classes, but NOT math 10!
He was quite clear and concise, but I would definitely not say he is easy. He makes sure you know that help is available and where it can be found, and is willing to answer questions in class. He has long tests, so go early if you can.
boring, too picky, makes fun of students, takes off way too many points for minor details, too much homework, it did not matter how long or hard I worked to succeed, not easy to talk to or get along with, gives bonus ?s that have nothing to do with ma
Excellent professor. Wants you to do well, willing to help. His grading scale rounds everything up and he gives bonus, so your grade ends up being ok. Tests are long and pretty tough, but if you study you'll be fine. I got my only A+ in his class.
His reputation isn't always true. I ended up getting along with him just fine. However, his tests are insanely long, but his random bonus questions help:)
I have not been able to decide if he can't teach or simply chooses not too, but he is by far the worst teacher I have had at Furman. This man does not need to be teaching in the math department, much less the chair of it. Avoid this teacher.
the dude doesnt teach a thing, never goes over homework so you are always completely lost, questions on the test are like nothing he has ever gone over, absolutely worthless, not personable at all, seems like he hates teaching the class, sees u as worthless
Oh Gosh! Where should I begin. I have never been to this site and am now finding it just so I can warn a poor helpless soul from jumping into a sea of wrath, destruction, vengeance, and weeping and knashing of teeth. I'm not even kidding, don't listen
Dr. Cook was not helpful in or outside of class. He was mean to students in class. He did not explain the concepts very well and was not open to questions. I DO NOT recommend this professor.
I'm glad I'm done with math, so I don't ever chance having this professor again. While his bonus questions and red/yellow cards were helpful, they didn't balance out his ridiculously hard questions on tests with not enough time or his lack of explanation.
He can make even the easiest subject impossible. Class is a waste of time and he seems to be in his own little world, not very helpful at all. Test questions are things you often have never seen before.
THis guy is awesome!!! make sure you know your stuff, but he's funny, enthusiastic, and a really good teacher!
He was very confusing and made things that were easy seem difficult. His test were impossible and didn't even cover what we went over in class. Plus they were too long, making them impossible to finish in one class. AVOID at all costs!!
he's one of the worst math teachers I have ever experienced. The class is supossed to be easy but he tests you on obscure concepts and not basic material. The random bonus doesn't help in the long run. Avoid at all cost unless u want a bad grade
This is the WORST class that I have EVER taken at Furman (except Massai). He is very very unapproachable and the test were damn near impossible. I would not suggest this class to Bill Clinton, and I hate Bill Clinton. This class is for Bin Laden and the birds. SAVE YOURSELF- NO COOK!
He wasnt as hard as everyone made him out to be. He gave lots of extra credit. The 3 exams were pretty hard, but the final was really easy. His jokes are crappy, but survivable. If you get stuck with him, dont worry. You will survive. All the exams are the same format-learn from the first
DO NOT TAKE COOK! LET IT BE THE LAST THING YOU DO. He will screw you over. Problems on the test are hard and long. He doesnt allow extra time and if you dont finish.. too bad. Not fun..if you like your GPA.. stay away.
STAY AWAY!!! I enjoyed calculus before this class and came out hating it. He does not know how to teach lower level math! HE WILL FRY YOU!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! EVEN IF IT'S YOUR LAST OPTION!!! He is not clear in conveying material and does not give you ample time on tests. He doesn't even test you on what he's taught! Questions are nothing like examples he gives in class. STAY AWAY
He was fine for 16; friendly, helpful, and easy - ridiculously easy. i made an A and am not a math person. only real complaint is not enough time to take tests/quizzes, I would get done usually but just barely.
made math fun:)
Everyone says so many bad things about Professor Cook, but he is really a nice man and a decent teacher. Maybe he is not good at teaching Calculus, I don't know. However, he is a good Math 16 teacher and I would recommend him for this class.
Great Professor! I found him challenging and inspirational. Influenced me early on to continue in mathematics and become a professor myself.
Save yourself from death because you'll surely die with Dr. Cook! He will literally cook YOU! He made a girl cry in our class because he made her look like a fool infront of the whole class... you'll have to do every math problem his way, or you won't get full credit...he makes you work every problem to the minute detail...he has anger issues!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! I thought that Math 16 would be a bird-class (you know, I'd fly right through it), but not with Cook. Granted, he is a nice man, but he gets really snippy sometimes. He's not very clear, nor very helpful. Most of the time, what he says doesn't even make sense. He seems very knowledgeable, but he's NOT a good teacher.
Just trying to make sure this man's ratings STAY down, which is where they belong. Socially dimwitted, needlessly caustic and biting, especially when students are too afraid to speak BECAUSE he's so vicious. Bumbling, arrogant, impatient, and inept at actually teaching the material. I made it out with an A-, but oh the pain. Hooray for bonuses.
EVIL EVIL EVIL man ... enough said. avoid this class. we started out with 15+ people in our class and ended up with 9 ... they were the smart and lucky ones
Great Professor! Many students think he is hard, and I had heard horror stories, but I love the guy. LOTS of extra credit opportunities, drop lowest quiz, skip questions on tests and final, and omit a quiz.
What a painful class. He asks questions and then doesn't listen to responses, asks the same question, and then gets mad because nobody answered him the second time because they all thought they were wrong because he didn't respond to the first answer. His sarcasm is very annoying. If i hadn't learned all this material before, i'd be struggling.
not a good teacher, gives you tests and quizzes that are confusingly worded, and then doesnt give you nearly enough time to finish. Gives bonus opportunities but are all irrelevant. I would never recommend taking his classes.
Not the most fun class. Didn't give enough warning for tests and quizzes. Lectures are boring. Lots of opportunity for bonus. Overall, not too bad, but not the greatest either.
really really hard...harder that i anticipated. But even if you try your best, and do all the problems, and then even work them again...and still don't get the right answer, he still won't help you. He is terrible at explaining things...an another thing, he thinks he's really funny...but he's not...and that just got old
PLEASE BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY: cook will cook you!!! This man was my greatest fear of college, study all you want but he WILL find a way for you to fail.Tests are unclear, extra credit is useless,&his random tangents during lectures don't help.If you still have the chance, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
Dr. Cook is not the best teacher. I would avoid him if you really care about learning the subject. If your in it because you have to be, you can get an ok grade. His tests are hard, but quizes and worksheets will boost grade. I have no idea on how to do well on his tests, but his odd grading scale will give you a decent grade in the end.
Terrible teacher. His lectures do not parallel with his impossible tests. His tests are ridiculous. His class will put you to sleep. He puts easy examples on the board then impossible questions on tests. Don't bother asking him for help because he will treat you like a moron and act like you are wasting his time. Avoid Marty Cook
Worst teacher I have ever had period. Expects you to learn completely from the book, does not teach the material whatsoever. Even if you understand the book material, his impossible test questions will make you feel stupid. Quizzes are easy but test difficulty increases 1000x after a quiz. DO NOT TAKE COOK if you want to live through MTH-110
I cried.... every night.
I got through this class only by the information I learned from my high school math teachers. Nice man, but very unapproachable and condescending to students who bravely attempt to ask for help. DIdn't believe in the phrase "Cook will cook you" but seriously...he does.
Do you like your gpa to be high? Do you enjoy being able to prove that you learned something? Do you like being taught the material that shows up on tests and quizzes? I hope this makes it obvious that Cook will destroy your semester/college career.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! Doesn't help at all. I get extra time and he told me that I didn't need it! Awful professor.
Dr. Cook is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. I was forced to drop his class for fear of losing my scholarship. My grades were B+ B+ A F(calc)
Not as horrible as I first thought. His tests are harder, but he is approachable after class if you have questions. Likes it if you participate, so it helps to do so. Goes by the book; and though hot-headed at times, it helps to ignore his tone of voice. Book can be confusing at times and he can explain materials in other ways.
For the love of GOD do not take this class.
Avoid this class!
Do the homework, participate in class, do a lot of practice problems, and make sure you understand the concepts - don't just memorize problems because he will try to trick you on the test! Explain all your test answers in paragraph form if you have to! He's tough, but if you work really hard you can pull off an A. Avoid his class if possible.
Dr. Cook is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He is extremely picky and counts off for small details that don't matter. If someone tries to ask a question, he just interrupts them and makes them feel stupid. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It's a horrible experience even if you're great at math.
Although I was able to keep a good grade, I still believe Cook hurt my education more than he helped. Professor Cook explains concepts in ways so simplistic that mathematicians lose interest and yet so abstract that non-mathematicians lose hope. He is also terribly condescending to students who attempt to participate. I do not recommend Cook.
This guy was awful, I recommend taking any other math teacher but him. He can't hear when students call out the right answer and goes on to yell at the class for not knowing. He looks down upon you and goes off on tangents on nothing that are not interesting or helpful.
RUN AWAY!!!
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. this guy is terrible. Do not take this class
He teaches you how to be a good person more than be a good student. The class is not hard if you preview every section as he requires. I only used an 1hr break before every class to preview and do my homework and I am doing fine. The funny thing is he really wants good reaction from students when he is teaching. You will have fun in his class.
Dr. Cook is a good guy, but a terrible professor. While good math teachers are hard to find, Dr. Cook is particularly bad; boring, confusing, rambling, etc. I'm not taking the next level math class, and while I think I'm prepared, little of that is due to him. Take this class but with a different professor.
absolute worst teacher i have ever experienced in my life. Rude, degrading, and short tempered.
Cook really is an awful professor, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
The man does not teach, forgets to tell you about upcoming quizzes and test. for the amount of money most students pay to come here it is unacceptable that he has a job here. I took AB Calc and did well, got a 4 on the exam but decided to reinforce the info before moving on. He confused me on numerous matters that i had previously understood
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Makes everything so easy and understandable! LOVE THIS GUY!
He shows you how to set up a problem, does not go over the steps to reach an answer, and 90% of the time won't even tell you what the answer to a problem is that you do not understand because "It ruins the fun of figuring out for yourself." Went in to ask for help multiple times and none was given. DO NOT TAKE.
Cook is by far one of the nicest professors at Furman, but he is an older one. Therefore, that means he is not going to change the way he teaches. RUN the other way. He expects students to already know, never checks homework, etc. nice man, horrible professor! My class started with 20 students and half way through the semester we were down to 6
Unnecessarily hard in my opinion. The only students who really excelled were those who had taken BC Calc in high school or were required to take this class for their major. Most people walked away with a C+, but it was one of the hardest C+ 's you will ever work for. He is a very particular grader; full credit is difficult, but so is no credit.
Started out okay, then things took a turn for the worst. He is very rude and confusing. He makes offensive comments towards students and is not helpful when asked questions. Some of the people in my class got C's or worse. I barely got a B and I worked so hard. Avoid if possible.
Not good at teaching, very few grades. If you have taken calculus before go ahead, if you struggle with math turn back.
Marty Cook is a nice guy, but is very difficult to understand during lectures. Unless you are a gifted math student, I would recommend switching out of his class.
Terrible teacher, does not explain math well at all. Writes out a problem and answered it himself without explaining how he did one thing and if you ask a question he comes back in a tone as if you're dumb.
Took him for MTH145 freshman year. Had to drop 2 months in; the worst teacher I've ever had. Did not engage the class in lectures; lectured in a condescending/hostile tone. Only graded by end of unit tests; did not go over homework. Taught by muttering ("It's easy."), facing away from the class, writing the textbook (verbatim) on the board.
Dr. Cook gets a bad rap because he is a challenging professor, but if you do the homework and get a good tutor off the bat you will be just fine. You have to do a lot of the teaching yourself (go over the chapters with a tutor!!!), but the class is definitely manageable if you put in the work. He teaches you how to be a good person. Love him!
He is by far the worst professor Ive ever had. Hes condescending towards every student, he gets mad when you dont already know what hes talking about in lecture, and he doesnt ever explain anything. Asking him questions is impossible because he will either avoid the question or straight up not answer.
Worst professor ever. Never take him. I had an A all year in AP Calc in highschool and passed the exam but managed to get a D in this class. His tests are not what he discusses in class.
