AWESOME prof!! Very funny and teaches so well.... you'll have a blast.

He cares about his students immensly, and wants them to do well, but the class is a joke. I attended the class 4 times the semester I took it, and walked away with a B . I didn't learn anything, except how his grading curve works.
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER, VERY FUNNY TOO!!!!
Required teacher. Must take his course. Helped me graduate.
Awseome math professor. Plays guitar during class. Dont need to know math to take his classes, dont need to know math for the finals. Just scribble something incomprehensible, hopefully some numbers and you will be fine. A or B guaranteed.
I went to this class 3 times and got a B all the tests are multiple choice and he is outta his fricken mind
Fun class and an easy way to get rid of a core. He often complains that he's getting paid less becauise of this class. When I had him, he'd somtimes play guitar to math stories.
EXCELLENT prrofessor. need to take any of his classes before leaving the school!
Marty is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He has helped me to find my calling and has introduced me to a world of wonder I never knew existed. Thanks to his inspiration (and continued guidance) I now have a PhD in mathematics myself.
Extremely easy grader, but not easygoing. He'll snap at you!
He's a really nice guy. His teaching is a little hard, and yes he's out of his friggin mind. He's also a great composer of music and awesome guitar player!
Friggen insane teacher. Seems liek a nice guy but hes not a good CSW teacher, Diddnt allow discussions in calss and diddnt answer a single question unless u hunted him down.
This class is an utter and complete waste of time. I acutally feel dumber for having taken it. He and his book (which is required for the class) are monumentally boring! Avoid this class, this man, and his incessent "thumbs up!" at all cost.
I think Marty is a good teacher. He is very helpful, and gives his students time to do and complete their assignments. However, this is not his passion. He could be a litter more open minded and let students speak their minds. I encourage all students to take one of his classes.
marty is nothing short of a world wonder.he teaches his classes with clarity, patience and passion. he is always willing to make time for students who need extra help, even at the cost of his own free time.he has infinite patience with ones who have trouble, and inspires and motivates those who dont
Best teacher I've ever had! Marty did an excellent job making this boring material more interesting. Anyone who says humor and math can't mix has never taken a class with Marty.
Marty is a very unique professor. He's out there a bit, but I think most professors need to be a bit idiosyncratic to make it that far. Very helpful, he won't let you fall behind.
What always struck me about Marty is that he wanted all students to understand the math, not only math majors. Math has always been hard for me, but Marty always had time even though I was not going into mathematics. He loves his discipline and it shows in every way, both inside and outside class.
Marty is a great guy. I worked with him over the summer a year ago and he really went out of his way to make sure I understood the material and had a good time doing it. He is a mentor as well as a professor.
Marty is the most enthusiatic and funny professor absolutely dedicated to instilling in his students the same passion for math he entertains. Easy to talk, joke, and study with, he makes each class about discovering beauty in numbers. Everyday he spends time with students who need any help.
THE BEST!They say that about alot of profs, but Marty IS REALLY the best.He knows the material thoroughly and presents it beautifully.Extremely encouraging to any student with a desire to learn, even the weak ones. I was one of his weak ones, but he took me under his wing because he saw my interest.

Marty is a great professor he has made my experience at purchase enjoyable and stimulating. I learned a great deal from Marty, he has helped me through some tough courses at purchase. Marty delivers excellent lessons in class, he makes the hardest topics understandable, and goals achievable.
Simply the best there is out there. By the time he gets through with you, you'll know all math you need ot know
great teacher i wish i had him for all my math classes

Marty's awesome... he really has a passion for Math and is very clear... he wants his students to understand. His one-liners are hilarious & he's very easy-going
Marty is awesome. He developed History of Math specifically for college kids who need to take a math class but hate the subject. He makes it fun to learn about roman fractions and egyption multiplication!! Plus, he wrote the book for the class (his jokes are even footnotes in the book!) you can pass easily but he makes u want to come to class.
Marty is seriously one of the greatest people I have come across in my time. His lectures were always hilarious, and he does his absolute best to make sure that everyone knows what's going on. He really encourages people to ask questions and takes his time with the answers. He may just be the best professor you'll ever have.

the man is a psycho. Starkraving lunatic. ****, classist, ethnocentric, and a moron. Also has no idea about the subject. May be a good teacher for math, but not culture. The only people who like his class are too stupid to notice how dumb he is.

There are plenty of boring math professors in the SUNY system. If you want one like that, go for it. If you want someone interesting, take Lewinter's class. Even if you don't agree with him politically, he at least makes you think.
Marty's a special case. His jokes are just terrible. They were the highpoint of my day twice a week. Literally, my notebook had two columns - one for awful puns, one for math. Guess which was usually longer… The only people who dislike (or hate) Marty are the really serious ones who somehow conceive he's making fun of them. He' not, guys.
Sometimes I'm too tired to listen to every single detail, but I feel badly for it because Dr. Lewinter is such a great professor. He really loves and cares about what he teaches, and is never reluctant to spend extra time for one of his students.
I can't believe how many morons exist on this Purchase campus. I thought this school was more open-minded before coming here, now that I see the student population and idiotic they are, I wished I had gone to Stinybrook. Lewinter is the one saving grace on this campus.
Prof Lewinter is perfect, as long as one has a sincere desire to learn. HE KNOWS HOW TO TEACH! Those not interested in learning will naturally not appreciate his exceptional talents.
Marty is awesome. He is the best, brightest, clearest, and most nurturing professor I have ever had or have ever heard of. He makes math dance off the board. Once you have taken a course with him you're spoiled for life!

MARTY IS THE SUPER-BESTEST TEACHER EVER!!!
Scholar and teacher of the highest caliber; over 60 publications; one of editors of Graph Theory Notes of New York; genuinely cares about his students and their welfare; truly noble character; genuine talent for conveying complex mathematical concepts.
this guy is an idiot. he should stick to teaching math.
Those who give this professor low ratings do so only because they don't agree with his opinions. This is their way of "getting back." Prof. Lewinter is an excellent teacher in every respect. He has a mastery of the subject, he's enthusiastic, etc. These low-raters are pathetic losers.
He is hands down the greatest professor I have ever had and I didn't even go to SUNY Purchase -- I only had him in the summer. He is funny, energetic, intelligent, and a fair grader -- he made class fun and interesting -- this is what a teacher should be. And he played guitar.
He is a genius brilliant professor. Gives explanation very clearly. Perfect and accurately notes on the blackboard.
Marty is the man. I failed Calc 2 the first time around at my school. Marty was such an engaging teacher that i got an A with him. Just go to class, be on time, and he's very helpful. Marty is the man. And he can also play any song in the world in his trusty guitar which he usually whips out in class. the man
Marty Lewinter is a god walking amongst mere mortals! TAKE HIM!
I had mixed feelings about Marty. I will admit that he is a brilliant man, but he can be extremely arrogant and self centered. His class was a complete breeze for all 3 weeks until he pulled a hard as final out of nowhere which killed my grade. My advice is, take this class to cover your math gen ed, but dont get careless. this Prof plays favorites
Five works... Math professor that speaks English! TAKE HIM

I've taken several math classes with this Professor, highly recommended, especially if your struggling with math, he is the go to guy for help. Fun, enthusiastic teaching style, remains effective for grasping some of the difficult subjects he covers.
Marty is an AMAZING teacher. I just finished taking calc 1 and calc two with him over the summer. He made math fun! He's is the only math teacher ive ever had that was able to make me want to pay attention during class. I learned more from him that I ever expected. He is brilliant and I have learned to much from him.
Truly an inspirational teacher. Not only makes the material interesting but also talks about history and how calculus helped create many modern techniques and inventions used today. A very funny man who is respectful to all his students (I don't understand why other people on this page said different). Highly recommended.
I've taken 5 classes with Marty. Rarely do you find a teacher who knows the material they teach so thoroughly. Once stand-up comedian, he loves life and loves his work. Unfortunately classes are almost entirely a 1-way flow of information, if you learn by DOING in class you may have trouble. Overall greatest Math teacher I've encountered.
I've never had a better professor in my life. He's always willingly to go the distance, just talk to him. Before taking a course with him, I never thought math could be interesting. I highly recommend his courses, if you have any doubts about his courses or independent studies, just speak to him. He is a really reasonable, nice person.
Marty is an AMAZING teacher. He makes math fun and enjoyable! He's is the only Math professor I've ever had that was able to make me want to pay attention during class. I learned more from him that I ever expected. He is a very fair grader and helps his students whenever possible. I definitely recommend him.
Marty was one of the best and most inspiring professors I have ever had. He consistently gave great lectures that were perfectly clear and he had an amazing knack for keeping your attention throughout the class. I strongly recommend other students take his classes if they are interested in math.
always encouraged us to ask questions, gave good answers, he never made you feel stupid, funny guy
Hes funny smart and just a good guy in general.
AWWWESOME
Marty taught me Calc 1 & 2 at Brooklyn Poly in 73/74. He was the best teacher in the school. He was so good as a Math teacher that I studied jazz and pop guitar with him for a year. Marty is simply the best!!
The professor really knows his stuff. If you like the material he's always willingly to go out of his way to help you. By far the professor I've had at Purchase.
AWSOME, seriously take this teacher, you will WANT to go to class. He can somehow talk about math and teaching karate and make it work togeather...this guy makes you want to go to his classes, take as many classes with him as possible 100%
I did my senior thesis with marty lewinter. I also took all my upper level math classes with him. I can say he truly got me to think like a mathematician. I'm currently an adjunct professor at CCNY and I still owe marty a great deal to showing me how a math professor should be. I hope to be as good as him one day.
Really knows what he's talking about, passionate about the subject, and most importantly wants you to succeed and understand material.
He really peaked my interest in mathematics with this class. He puts a lot of effort into keeping the class "interested" as well which is great, but at times he can get very off topic. Grading is very easy, and he uses his own textbook which was a big financial help.
Amazing teacher. I took all of my math classes with him from Calc 1 all the way to Differential Equations. As someone who was more geared towards Comp Sci, he did his best to keep everyone interested including myself. I began to see the world through the eyes of a mathematician. It's impossible to sleep during his class. He always gives 100%
Dr. Lewinter is AMAZING. Hands down the best professor I ever had,not just for math, and when a math teacher can make class fun and exciting, you know you've got something special!
Genuine character, honest, passionate about his work.
Extremely hard working and enthusiastic for his students. He makes the material easy to understand and enjoyable to learn. Lucky to have had him.
Simply put, I used to hate math until I had Marty as a professor. I had his classes throughout my college career and he excelled at teaching in everyone of them. Not only does he know his math, he goes out of his way to make the class fun and enjoyable which is something most math professors cannot achieve. Overall a great professor to have. 10/10.
Incredible professor, changed my outlook and perspective on pursuing a career with mathematics - always helpful, brilliant mind! Do not pass up an opportunity to take a class with Marty if you can help it! A++++
Excellent Professor. He was the single most important person to influence me to pursue Math
Professor Lewinter is an excellent teacher. His knowledge of mathematics is phenomenal, and he has a special talent for making difficult topics easy. He's a master at explaining things. He's also very dependable and friendly. I enthusiastically recommend him, he's simply the best!
Marty is quite literally the greatest professor I've ever had. He brings enthusiasm and joy to all of his lectures, and tops it off with a healthy level of humor. He is very approachable for extra help, if needed. I recommend him to anyone and everyone.
I changed my major from bio to math because of this man. Before him I could barely handle precalculus. I aced calc 1, 2 and 3 because of his phenomenal instruction. Students will only get one teacher like him in a lifetime if they are lucky. I would follow this man to the ends of the Earth. Give thanks to God if you find yourself in his class.
Amazing teacher, I also switched my major to math greatly due to his influence. Enthusiastic and fun, definitely take his classes if you can
Very clear, fit a great deal of content into the course. Extremely helpful whenever you had a question.
Marty is an excellent teacher who is very knowledgeable and keeps math entertaining through humor. I really enjoyed this class. I would also go to office hours, which was really helpful.
Marty cured me of my fear of math, he showed me I can reach my potential, got me through my math/comp sci major with extra help outside the classroom. Marty is personally committed to his students success. Excellent Teacher!! Highly Recommend!!
One of the best teachers I've ever had in my whole life. He is that good, people... I had to take summer school calculus after my freshman year at another school, and I got Marty as my teacher. He. Was. Awesome. I aced the course and for the first time in my life I actually understood and liked math.
Marty was truly an amazing teacher. I had struggled with math throughout my life. His calc class was the first time I felt a thorough and complete understanding of the subject. He has a sense of humor that some could find off-putting but I found it entertaining, keeps lectures light-hearted. My biggest regret is not taking more classes with him.
