Dr. Spranger is easily the best professor that I've had my entire 3 years here at state so far. He's a genuinely caring professor, and so outgoing. You can tell he loves teaching the content of this class. This class is in no way easy, but if you take notes and study correctly you'll have a fulfilling experience in the class.
Spranger is the best prof I've ever had in my life. You can tell he enjoys his job and tries to make lectures interesting. Most of all, I appreciate how direct his tests are. Memorize and understand the slides, and you'll get a 4.0, no question. He also does well to prepare you for med school, etc. Also a lot of extra credit.
Spranger is by far the best professor I have EVER had! I'm not going to lie, this class is pretty difficult, but he really does care about the students and does the best he can to help them succeed. Attendance is mandatory but it really is so worth your time. Lots of extra credit opportunities and just a super enjoyable class overall!
Prof Spanger was extremely caring and considerate. He genuinely cares about his students' success. I thought he tried his best to make the lectures interesting even though they were content HEAVY and the concepts are difficult. Highly recommend. PS: you WILL have to study even if you have never had to before
Can't say enough good things about Spranger. He is so dedicated to his students, and provides a plethora of opportunities for you to succeed in his class, it's up to you if you use them. He's a fair professor, the content on his exams is what is on the exams. It is very content heavy, but it is also preparing you to become a health professional.
Spranger is by far my favorite professor I've had at MSU. He truly cares about his students and does his absolute best to prepare us for our future as healthcare professionals. He is very clear about his resources and how to exceed in his class- do them! His lectures are engaging and I will miss this class. I truly felt I learned the content.
Spranger is one of the most caring professors I have ever had at MSU it is a tough class but if you put in the effort a 4.0 is achievable.
Dr. Spranger did a great job teaching intro level physio. He organized the course very well and it was a pretty tough class context-wise, but there are many opportunities for extra credit. The lectures are important to attend so while they weren't mandatory I attended all of them. He does get off track throughout lecs sometimes for funny stories.
Marty is the GOAT. He teaches one of the toughest courses at MSU and does literally everything that he can to help you succeed. If you do not do well in PSL310, then it is on you.
Genuinely my favorite professor I've ever had. Show him that you care, and you will be rewarded. People line up to kiss his shoes for a letter of rec first week of classes-don't do that. Put in the work, be active on discord, and prove yourself so he knows you before he ever sees you. He has an ego, but as he should. He re-ignited my love of health
Best prof Ive ever had. Students will line up first week of class vying for a letter of rec. Not recommended. Study hard, be active online, and prove yourself to a point where he knows of you before even meeting you. Amazing lectures, easy to understand and catch onto. Uses TopHat. Very engaging content, re-ignited my love of health.
Marty cares about his students. He makes many arrangements so that students can get the help they need to succeed. He does talk about himself a lot but it is more interesting than just reading off slides for two hours. The exams are very hard and he does pile on quizzes. He does a good job with such a hard and content-heavy class.
Very disorganized. Rushes students, & gives lectures because he cannot teach his content at a good enough pace for students to retain it. This professor has to highly inflate his grades ( 40+ of extra credit ) for reference exams are worth 60. Hes disrespectful to students time, and frankly out of touch. He has assigned homework over breaks. Creepy
Bad professor, Im pretty sure he writes these reviews himself
Poop professor. Im pretty sure he writes his postive reviews.
He puts the p in poop professor
He is very knowledgeable about physiology. I don't like the environment as he is unapproachable and doesn't seem to respect students' time. There is a ton of material but focus on taking good notes and going through the AQs. Don't let him pressure you into using his study skills bc you can do well without changing your methods to suit his ego.
Dr. Spranger is a wonderful professor that truly cares for his students. Even through his health difficulties, he provides the opportunity for us to be in-person for lecture! While his exams are difficult, they only cover lecture material and are completely fair. His subject knowledge is incomparable, and his examples are always helpful! FAV PROF
This prof is GOATED. Such a great lecturer and quite knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. He is ready to admit to any mistakes he makes (such as a lecture slide error) and he cares about his students doing well. His exams are significantly harder because they make you think, but they are fair in regards to what he includes in the slides.
lectures were long, and the tests were much harder than the content taught. there was way too much content for the amount of time in the semester. atmosphere was uncomfortable, professor was extremely unapproachable, had an attitude and was disrespectful of student's time.
Spranger is my favorite professor I've had at MSU. The class is difficult and there is a great amount of information to retain for the exams, but you will not meet another pre-health professor that cares more about his students and is so enthusiastic about what he teaches. I would take any class taught by Spranger.
I have never met a professor who is so full of himself and yet students continue praising him. It does not make sense. He is genuine and a decent professor, but it is quite annoying to constantly hear his achievements and him praising the top students. I'd rather learn than spend 30 minutes listening to him talk about dropping out of med school.
You have to attend in person lectures as he writes on the slides he teaches off of. If you pay attention in class you will know whats on the exams and he has a fairly fun personality. However, his exams are very hard and he doesnt mind criticism well.
This class is incredibly detail-oriented and heavily graded on exams, so it is important to pay attention. There are many resources to help you succeed in this class, however, Professor Spranger does not take criticism well and will be defensive if questioned. He is incredibly generous with his extra credit and wants everyone to succeed.
The workload for this class is severe. Attend 2 1/2 hour lectures, which are incredibly long as he talks at you for the full time, then rewatch the lectures when you get home to understand the material. He is available for office hours, but is not respectful of people's time and was personally rude towards me. TA's are extremely helpful, use them!
Great professer as far as preparing you for for future classes but difficult. Be prepared to spend lots of time outside of class studying for exam but he sets you up so well for future classes.
Dr. Spranger is one of my favorite professors! He would often sit with students in the study area outside of class and chat, so I got to know him pretty well. I loved that the class was more of a conversation than him lecturing at us. I learned a lot from him. I didn't think his exams were hard. I just studied the day before for a couple hours.
I think if you're willing to put in the hours - about 4 per lecture - to watch the videos, do practice problems, and take notes you will end up with a 4.0. He is willing to help but he can't hold your hand. I never went to office hours, but his class is thorough and he has tons of resources. Don't take this class if you are not self sufficient.
Prof Spranger was a great professor- cared about his students, made lectures engaging, and provides a lot of resources for students to succeed. The class is super content heavy but you just have to put in the work to succeed.
Spranger is the best prof I have ever had. There is an extreme amount of content and exams ask very specific questions, but with the study skills he provides you will succeed in the class. He also gives out multiple extra credit points during the semester.
Professor wants you to learn and is very knowledgeable, but gives no leniency in grades or deadlines and can be rude. Rambles for the whole 2.5 hour lecture and expects you to go home and rewatch the whole thing which takes about 4 hours. Provides many resources but get ready to have no life bc you're always studying for this class. Good luck...
Amount of content given in this one-semester class is not reasonable. Have to be ready to commit to learning the material like a 12-hour part-time job to have a chance of getting a decent grade. Instead of an assessment of each system, three units are grouped into one large test. Knowledgeable professor but teaches like we're all physiology majors.
Spranger is very knowledgeable, but has high expectations. Lectures very quickly and expects you to rewatch/take notes on 1hr 50min lectures, which takes ~ 4hrs. This is the most content heavy class I've taken. It's not impossible to succeed, but very time consuming and tiring to do so. Don't take this with other hard classes if you can avoid it.
Very lecture heavy and you're graded with a lot of exam points. Lectures are long and recorded, but they take a long time to watch. Likes interacting with students before and during lecture. Utilize office hours because they're very helpful. Knows a lot of physiology and loves what he teaches. A lot of content, but it isn't impossible to do well
Nice guy. He lives up to the hype but not as much as you would think. Prepare to feel very behind if you do not understand course content. Just study correctly 1 week before your exams and you're guaranteed a 95%
Spranger is a good professor but prepare for the workload of this class. I found myself spending the bulk of my studying time on this class. Attendance required and he will put an attendance code up, so don't be late. Lectures were very confusing to sit through and you will need to rewatch all of the lectures to study. Offers many opportunities
He lectures great BUT he has a very fragile ego and will not take any complaints or criticism. He is quite condescending. He is inconsiderate of students time and also intentionally makes the last exam much much harder than the others. He will say he wants all students to succeed but he purposefully makes that hard for people.
I had just finished taking this class again. I passed with a 1.0 barely. He is an amazing person very inspirational- not an amazing professor. He has a large ego, and underestimates the difficulty of the content and assumes students are just lazy if they get a bad score. I seriously thought about changing my major just so I didn't have to retake it
This was a monster of a class. Literally SO much content youll learn, so be ready to put in a significant amount of time to learn. Spranger is super knowledgeable and has high expectations but gives you lots of opportunity. I thought the class was too much to be honest but what can ya do. Put in work and youll have a good background for med school
I have never felt so disrespected in a class setting by a professor. Attendance was mandatory (which is fine) but he would actively make fun of students who showed up late and would even publicly shame them for it, discouraging people to show up. The tests were difficult and I did not feel he prepared students for them. DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS.
I personally loved this man's lectures but they were not reflective of the exams. For some he'd primarily focus on one or two slides during the lecture and then have it be the bulk of the exams especially with the drugs. Very engaging lectures and a funny man.
You have to sacrifice some of your time to do well in the course. There will be times where it feels impossible to learn everything that is needed, but with enough time and discipline, you will get it. There are many opportunities to get help with understanding content, and if you can explain the concepts in a conversation, you'll be good to go.
I loved this class. It has been my favorite so far at MSU, and Spranger was awesome. Really funny dude, strict but not unreasonable. I think people who rag on him all the time just don't study enough. Go into the class with an open mind and don't listen to reviews. Not an AI written (no idea why there are so many), this is honest.
Worst professor by far in the physiology department if not the university. Marty I am sorry dropping twice from medical school has this badly damaged your fragile ego, however, do not take it out on your students. To anyone thinking this class is helpful, it is not. He expects at least 30 hours a week for a 3.0. I wish I had more than 350 words
Man is a straight-up egomaniac. Look at the below comments, half are about how funny Marty is and how great... Way to write your own reviews, Marty. He would email us during football games to remind us of exams in 3 weeks and how we were failing if we were at the football game and not the library. He would try to be motivational but was not...
Mr. Spranger straight up made one of my friends cry in office hours. She went in to get help, however Mr. Spranger ripped her entire life apart, because she wasn't 'trying' enough. I put in 25 hours+ a week, but only got 2.0 in the class. I hope someone sees this as a strong warning to not take PSL 310.
Just watch the lectures, write down the nuanced information from each lecture, review the AQ and answers after each lecture, and do the practice exams, and you should do well.
This class was super hard I felt like I was drowning in it. I want to cry.
So I took Sprangers class asynchronous over the summer and the shear amount of work I did for this class was ridiculous. We had a deadline almost every 4 days and I lost majority of my summer taking this class. The class had its own personal grading systems and exams where something you really couldn't afford to miss and the questions were specific
Few weeks into this class--solid 4.0 student, dual degree, hs valedictorian + firmly believe in kindness in academia. One of the most inflated fragile egos I've ever seen, from day 1. Unbearable, aggressive towards students (including public humiliation), + towards those who are alr shy/uncertain. Pits students against (this is not UMich grading?)
Same reviewer (ego/UMich before). He announced to the class several times he's read his ratings here--+ takes pride in it. Unbelievable/delusional to me that he sees sm justified frustration + thinks failing his students = a sign of success. Classic cherry picking (validates only ass kisser opinions). Thinks his trauma is a personality trait/excuse
Professor Spranger has a specific teaching style that takes some getting used to, but if you engage with it, the class can be very rewarding. Attend lectures, study the textbook, and use resources like unstuckstudy AI to prep - it'll pay off.
This material is hard but Spranger is amazing. The class gets a bad rep because it is content dense, but he genuinely is an amazing teacher who gives you all the resources needed. The class is a time commitment, but if you put in the work the material is not actually complicated. He is super approachable and is super fair to those who actually try.
This class has almost deterred me from continuing with my major, and it's not because of the content. If other pre-med professors are as egotistical and rude as Spranger, I don't want any part of it. The fact that he truly thinks he is so good at teaching that if you fail it is because you are lazy and not good enough is demoralizing. DO NOT TAKE!!
This class was easily the hardest class I have taken for my major. I would feel really good about one exam and bad about another but my scores would be better with the one I felt worse with. I made a mistake of not asking for help soon enough, so when people say go to office hours, I would be going to AT LEAST one every week.
Manner of communication with students is unacceptable & unprofessional. We're all sorry he didn't get into med school if it meant this personality. He lectures well, and I enjoy the content, but the attitude is incorrigible. Authority comes with responsibility. TAs except for Helen are mini Sprangers. Bullies students, tone, & is unapproachable.
I never write reviews on this website, or any forum for that matter. But I am taking time out of my busy day to write this because this guy actually sucks. I do well in his class dont get me wrong, 90 exam average, but the number of times this guy assigns a quiz (he never mentions it in class) on a saturday or sunday and you get 1 and a half days
Literally used the first day of class to trauma dump. He is extremely uncomfortable to be around and has the biggest ego ever. If you do badly, it's your fault for not doing his study skills, even though I did do them and still did badly. He goes on tangents in his lectures, so you never know what will actually be on the exam.
Really tough class, I've gone to every lecture and after I rewatch it n write notes/studying it took me ~6hrs each, I stand at a 3.5. He is a great teacher n is willing to help, his pettiness/side comments lowkey crack me up the sensitive people don't like that tho. I like the content but its just sm I filled 1.5 notebooks, just don't get behind.
Extremely easy class. Watch the videos, pay attention to what he says, and you should easily get an A on the exam. I did this about two days before each exam.
I have NEVER in my 3 years at MSU, had such a hard class. I spend hours each day and have never gotten a passing grade. Every time I reach out for help, I am told that I am not doing enough, though I have tried all of his study methods. When I used to go to office hours, they were always packed with suck-ups, one girl even brought him chocolates.
Spranger seems like a chill guy, and his lectures are pretty good. It's just so much content and constant studying. I think it's just a hard class anyway, but the exam questions are sometimes ridiculous, like "If I were microscopic inside of the heart during systole" You really have to memorize everything he says in each video in order to do well.
Literally the best professor I have ever had. While this was the most difficult class I have taken, I have never been more engaged in a course. Spranger WANTS you to do well, so many help/review sessions offered. Plenty of extra credit opportunities as well. Exams are difficult, but if you rewatch lectures and study hard, you will be fine.
This man stressed me out. He sent out quizzes that were not in the syllabus and were due at random times a day later. He made weird comments every lecture and gets off on students who suck up to him. He'll give extra credit and just stand there to listen to everyone praise him. Did not need to know details about his colonoscopy!
Overall PSL 310 is a difficult course. Prof. Spranger knows this and provides all the resources necessary to succeed. You will do well if you put in the effort (which is a lot). His test replacement policy is also a nice plus in case you have a bad test.
This man gets off on being cruel. This class is so much material while trying to stay afloat in other classes. Random due dates for quizzes, 5 hard exams, thinks he's a god for giving 20 EC points. He's rude and condescending.
Spranger assigns quizzes on weekends and makes them due at ridiculous times. Good luck with his class, because he says he's giving less extra credit.. as if the course isn't hard enough. Kiss your life away if you take this class; every free second will be for this course. The AQs and PEQs don't help, and everything he says will be on the exam.
Everybody seems to love or hate Spranger but I'm pretty neutral. Yes his class is hard but he gives you everything you need to succeed. He's a weird guy though- very egotistical. Just rewatch the lectures and include everything he says in your notes and you'll be fine.
This is hands down my favorite professor. Gives amazing lectures and is hilarious. Although this class was very very challenging with a heavy course load, he gives you all the tools you need to succeed in the class. If you follow his study method he teaches during lecture, you will succeed in the course.
This class is content-heavy and time-consuming. It requires you to rewatch lectures and take detailed notes. To help organize your notes, use the Aqs as an outline. This was helpful to me. Quizzes are assigned randomly, and you have only two days to complete them, so watch out for those D2L emails. If you do all of this, you should succeed.
I really enjoyed Spranger and pretty much everything about PSL310. He's the type of guy who has high expectations for his students, but makes an effort to give us a bunch of resources to succeed. This class requires an adequate amount of time and effort. Study smart and stay focused.
I think he is a great teacher and truly passionate about his teaching. He gives many study tools for the exams, which help if utilized. He also gives a good amount of extra credit, which ultimately helps. This class is not easy, but if you put in the time and effort, it will pay off in the end.
This course was the best class I've ever taken, it made me fall in love with learning again. However, the professor is cruel and egotistical. He gets off on watching students struggle. He lacks empathy for students and is condescending. Take the course, but do not expect to like the professor.
I have mixed feelings about him. I feel like he is a good dude, but at other times… I can agree with what others are saying. Very grateful for the extra credit, but the fact that people clap for him for giving extra credit1… big ego boost for him lol. I will say that he is great at his job. Be prepared for heavy lectures and tests!
Came to have a love hate relationship with professor Spranger. While his lectures are some of the most interesting I've ever sat in, it was a fight to survive from start to finish in his course. You will be spending so much time on hw and review and extra credit if you're lucky, while losing the plot. Then turn around and have a tophat quiz due :,(
This class is very challenging and takes a lot of time outside of lecture just due to the nature of the content. Spranger does teach well and he is very good about only testing on content he actually talked about in class. Tests are very hard though, so be prepared to spend 15-20 hours per week outside of lecture if you want to do well.
This class is my favorite content-wise but takes up the most time outside of class. I rewatched every lecture taking notes then rewrote them into my own words + review. Ended up with about 85% on each exam but 4.0 with all the extra credit he gives. Spranger himself is a little full of himself but genuinely believes everyone can succeed.
Professor Spranger is exactly what everyone says he is. When preparing for this course I thought "this cant be that bad" it is. Your exams are not an accurate representation of your knowledge. The amount of homework is diabolical. Spranger steps over the boundary of a teacher student relationship. do yourself a favor and take at a community college
His lectures are interesting, and the homework is manageable. However, the exams are extremely detailed and harder than expected. These are not a fair measure of the information students know. If possible, take this class at a community college instead. He is very condescending to students, so be prepared.
Exams are tough. I studied for 20+ hours a week by rewatching lecture videos and rewriting concepts in my own words. Recommend making flashcards of AQs and memorizing them. I'm a terrible test taker and got 85-95s on most all my exams doing this. Super hard class but definitely possible to 4.0. Spranger is egotistical but its not outrageous.
Prof. Spranger ruined my love for physiology. I was very excited to take his course, but Prof Spranger made his exams way too difficult for the average student. He expects you to put 15+ hours of studying in during the week, as if his students don't have other difficult pre-health classes, a job, clubs, and maybe even a social life.
An intense personality, feels bad for next semester as he is reducing extra credit, as someone told him that they didn't need to study for the last exam and could still 4.0. I have never seen a prof receive so many gifts during office hours. he does not take the blame in almost a quarter of the class failing. The averages on all exams were failing
Hardest class I think I will ever take here. Lectures take about 5-6 hours to rewrite. Have to do smart books which should be for extra credit since class is already heavy, and I've been told by ULAs textbook is no help overall and not to even read it. You will have no life outside of class if you want a good grade. Class is very interesting tho.
Good luck in this class! Was told by TAs that he makes this class busy on purpose. Heard he is also reducing extra credit from now on which is crazy. Exam averages are always low (60s) but tries to make it seem like it's not bad. One person did not score an 100% on the final exam. Had a quiz on finals week which I don't even think is allowed..
This class is tough, but not impossible to get a 4.0 by any means. Spranger is an intense guy, but he will always help if you ask a question. TAs, SSHS, and CRs help immensely. Don't understand why so many people claim the exams are impossible. The questions are extremely similar to the PEQs, AQS, and Tophat quizzes.
I retook this class to obtain a letter of rec from Spranger, and excelled in this course besides my final. I scored lower than what I had been scoring, and he knew I wanted a letter of rec from him. He saw my score, he looked at me and said “no letter of recommendation” and went onto a rant in front of 4-5 other students. I lost respect for him.
It seems easy until you bomb every test. So discouraging when you do the study skills and continue to perform poorly on exams. I am typically a 3.5-4.0 student, but was ecstatic when I got a 70%. He thinks this class should be nearly impossible for no reason. There is truly no good way to study for his exams, just memorize the AQs and pray.
I took PSL 310 with Dr. Spranger and it was one of my favorite classes. Dr. Spranger does a great job explaining important concepts and was always available for any questions. He provides dozens of sessions each week to catch up on content, go over notes, and review previous exams. Spranger does everything he can to make sure his students succeed.
Dr. Spranger is an incredible professor. I found him profoundly smart and he went above and beyond for us as students (ex. making additional practice questions, etc). You can tell that he deeply cares about his students' success, and he truly was my favorite professor during undergrad. Highly recommend you take his class- you'll learn SO much!
Overall great professor and taught the course well! This is a class where attendance is very important as a lot of the exam content is directly from the lectures itself and not from the textbook. He puts the lectures up online after class so I recommend always going back and reviewing those. The class content is hard but teaching wise he's great.
Spranger is hands down one of the best professors at MSU. He gives you every single resource you could possibly need to succeed in this course. The content was very dense and difficult, but as long as you pay attention and listen to his study method, you will excel in this course. As difficult as the content was, you can do well because of Spranger
Tough class, but very doable. Spranger is very honest about his expectations for the students and goes out of his way to help. The lectures are SUPER helpful and recorded for later review. He sets up help sessions with TA/ULA almost everyday, so help is everywhere. You will have to apply yourself, but he is very supportive. Rewarding class overall.
He knows how to motivate a class on such a hard topic. His class changed the way I study and I was able to apply those methods to other aspects of my life. I would recommend anyone to take this his classes, he is seriously amazing.
Dr. Spranger is hands down one of the best professors at Michigan state. PSL 310 is a great class for anyone premed. He's a cool guy and makes himself available when you need help. As any premed class, it is not easy but anyone that tries will get a 4.0. Do well and he will give you a job as a ULA.
Professor Spranger's physio course is definitely a more challenging one. That being said, it has been one of my favorite courses I have taken in my undergraduate experience so far. He always tries to squeeze in stories during his lectures to keep everyone engaged and offers a decent amount of extra credit.
Physiology with Spranger is an infamous class at MSU. To be blunt, it is not an easy class, and the topics are challenging and cover a wide variety of fields. Spranger, however, is a more than understanding professor who gives numerous ways to improve your grade and is constantly helping students improve their notes and studying skills.
I loved this class. I am writing this review 3 years later as a current medical student and to this day, Dr. Spranger is one of the best professors I've ever had. THE MATERIAL IS HARD, but he will assist your learning in so many ways if you PAY ATTENTION. Remember that he is teaching physiology, which is one of the most difficult concepts to grasp.
Professor Spranger was one of the best professors I had at Michigan State. He cared for every student, and gave a lot of opportunities to have one on one meetings with him to discuss succeeding in the class. His teaching style made the material easy to learn. The study skills allowed me to succeed in his class and other pre-med classes.
He is an amazing professor and keeps the lectures interesting. I was able to apply the methods he suggested to other aspects of my life. I seriously recommend taking his classes they are awesome!
Pre-Health Physiology is a tough course. Although a professor cannot make the content smaller or easier, Spranger provided an abundance of resources on both the content and how to study to make this class easier. Spranger made me feel like I could do well and he really wanted me to do well. In a tough course, this support meant a lot.
I took the class last fall and it covers a lot of material and lectures can be pretty dense. I studied by going back and reviewing the recorded lectures the next few days to really soak in all the material. He's a good teacher and his personal stories really stuck with me. If you put in the effort, this class can be rewarding.
Sprangers course IS difficult. It takes work. This class shouldn't be easy, it is important. If you're taking it, you're taking it for a reason. He is an awesome prof whose course is made to challenge you WHICH IS GOOD. He gives lots of extra credit and does set you up to succeed. This class is completely doable if you put in the work. He's awesome
PSL 310 was the first class at msu where I felt the lectures clearly tied into the medical profession in an engaging way that prepares premeds. Lectures are active with top hat, and while this makes attendance mandatory, helps with applicable test content and grade boost. The content is clear with posted review questions and help always available.
This class is extremely challenging and requires a LOT of work outside of class. Many like to complain about the class, but do not want to put in any extra work to make the class more doable. Marty is a good professor that challenges you to be ready for grad school, and I feel more prepared now for the work load required in grad school. Take it.
Professor Spranger takes pride in what he teaches, he knows the material extensively and teaches it in a way that is very graspable if you also put effort in. I 4.0 his class because of his teaching style and his effort he puts into his lectures and students. I recommend him if you want to actually learn and not just memorize and forget.
This class was one of the harder classes for my major; however, it was reasonable. He offers lots of extra credit. I went to all the lectures and studied a lot for this class and received the grade I wanted, with no prior knowledge in physiology. He is a fair teacher and I respect his dedication and the resources he provides for his students.
Mr. Spranger is an amazing professor who provides detailed lectures and resources to help you succeed in his class. He's approachable, easy to reach, and always willing to explain topics more thoroughly if needed. As long as you manage your time well and put in consistent effort, you'll do great.
Dr. Spranger is one of my favorite professors at MSU. Physiology is a tough subject and many students conflate difficulty of a subject with the difficulty of a professor- which is inappropriate. He made physiology as simple and easy as he could. In fact, I refer back to his simple slides regularly as a medical student. He's also kind and patient!
If you plan on taking the MCAT, this class is an absolute must. Spranger is a very good lecturer and this class goes through everything about the human body. This class is definitely difficult, but if you put in the time in studying for exams, it is very realistic to get a 4.0 as theres a lot of extra credit offered. (exams are also not that bad)
PSL 310 is a true 4 credit course, it will undoubtably be your most challenging class and you must stay on top of the content. Spranger is an amazing professor who is truly passionate about what he is teaching, and he provides many resources for you to succeed. Put in the work, ask for help when you need it, and you will do well.
There is a lot of material to learn, however, the professor makes the lectures intriguing and very understandable. Professor Spranger cares for his students and provides many different kinds of resources to help them succeed in this course. If you use any of these resources, it is very possible to achieve a 4.0.
This class was very difficult and requires time and effort to be successful. Dr. Spranger was so supportive. He was responsive to questions over email and records all lectures. Rewatching them is the key to learning the material. He has study help sessions, review guides, and TAs do review sessions for every exam. Put in the work and you got this!
Put in the work and you'll get a 4.0. Class is all lecture based but Dr. Spranger gives interesting lectures and keeps everyone engaged.
Spranger is very fair as a physiology prof. This is one of the core classes that preps you for the MCAT and tests if you are capable of pursuing a pre-health profession. Unsurprisingly, the lectures are tough and content is hard to digest, so you have to spend time out of class. Exams are easy (hard if you don't watch the lectures). Offers EC too
Prof Spranger's physiology class was a tough class but as long as you put effort into the class and he see's you trying, he is a fair professor. He offers a lot of help resources outside of class and a good chunk of extra credit. The lectures are very information dense, but it is clear he cares about student success. The lectures are entertaining.
This class was easily the hardest class I took in undergrad, but now as a PA student I can't imagine how behind I would be if it weren't for this class. This class will prepare you for grad school!! Yes it is extremely challenging BUT prof Spranger genuinely wants every single student to end with a 4.0 and will always help, just ask!
PSL310 was so content dense but it's expected. Can see students saying Spranger has a big ego, but he gives EC and exams represent the content from lecture. If you have questions, just ask him after class or in office hours. He can be blunt, so heads up. You won't retain or do well on exams by memorizing... you actually have to apply the concepts
Professor Spranger was a great professor who set me up academically for PA school. He made the content interesting and engaging. I enjoyed coming to his lectures and office hours. You can really tell that Marty enjoys being a professor and only wants the best for his students.
PSL 310 certainly is a challenging course, however, Professor Spranger does a great job of providing his students with all the resources and support they need to succeed. If you dedicate time to watch all lectures, take good notes, and go to his office hours (or the TA/LA help sessions), you will excel in this class, and find it very rewarding.
Dr.Spranger is clearly dedicated in teaching material that will stay with you. Yes, he expects a lot from his students but he gives you the foundation for medical graduate programs. The course required a lot of effort but there is a ton of resouces to make sure his students succeed. I have never learned so much from one course at MSU.
PSL 310 is a content-heavy course, but a necessary one for all pre-health professionals. Professor Spranger truly simulates the material that you will encounter on the MCAT and equivalent entrance exams, so engaging with this course and striving for long-term retention of the material is fundamental. Embrace the academic rigor and you will succeed!
Not an easy 4.0, but if you're looking to actually learn, 100% take this course. Spranger may get a bad rap from students who didn't want to be challenged, but he's been my favorite prof. He truly prepares students for the real world, offers every resource imaginable (+ a ton of extra credit) and really cares about his students' learning.
The material helped me in understanding the cases I would see while shadowing in the hospital. I believe this class helped me in other courses such as biochemistry and immunology, as it provides a foundational understanding. You will spend lots of time studying!! Great class for pre-med/health. He also offers test review and lots of office hours!
Dr. Spranger is an incredible professor. He truly cares about his students success, which is evident by the amount of help sessions that he has dedicated to succeeding in his class. His lectures are engaging and informative, and he made physiology super enjoyable to learn! If you put the work in, he will set you up for success for sure.
Dr. Spranger is an excellent professor who clearly has a passion for physiology and working with his students to help them best learn how to study. His course can be challenging by nature and topic but that is fully supported by his lecture content, the resources he provides students, and his accessibility in office hours.
Dr. Spranger is very knowledgeable and passionate about this subject and strives for his students to succeed. However, the class has a lot of content, and you are expected to know it back to front. I enjoyed all of the topics we learned about but definitely put in the work to know it. Put in the effort and you will love this class!
Spranger is a good prof and wants to help students. He is a bit full of himself, but offers a lot of extra credit and resources to help you succeed. It's all about the effort you put in. There is a lot of content and you do have to study extra hard to do well in the course. The exams are a lot like the quizzes, PEQs, and Tophat questions.
He is someone who can engage 400 students really well for multiple hours multiple times a week and not everyone can. As someone in medical school now, some of the stuff I learned in his classes are the reason why my experience so far has been smooth and I have been doing well. Be prepared to work hard and study a lot but the reward is high.
Offers a ton of resources to help you succeed in the course.
Professor Spranger cares a lot about his students. He offers many resources for students. There is also a large amount of extra credit given throughout the semester. As long as you put the hours and effort into studying, the exam questions are very fair and getting a 4.0 is achievable. Lastly, do the study skills or some form of them, it does work!
This class is definitely not an easy A but if you put in the effort it is very worthwhile and gives you a great foundation, especially if you are going into a pre-health profession. You can tell Spranger really cares about the success of his students and provides many opportunities for students to get help outside of class. loved this class!
Great Class. Be prepared to put in the work but prof spranger is very motivational and gives you the tools/confidence to succeed. The more you put in, it will reflect on your grade and there is a lot of extra credit. The lectures are very engaging and makes it easy to follow the material and want to learn more. Would totally recommend.
Dr. Spranger is absolutely phenomenal at what he does. He does an amazing job lecturing about a topic that he is deeply passionate about. In fact, he is so passionate about physiology that I have also grown an appreciation for it, I was always so elated to attend his lectures. Dr. Spranger has further developed my passion for human medicine.
Dr. Spranger was a good professor who showed immense passion for the class and that was reflected in his teaching method and his happy approach to teaching in class.
Dr. Spranger is a great professor and a great guy. He offers ample opportunities to seek help and get your grade up if you need it. He truly cares about his students and if you put the time in, take advantage of the extra credit opportunities, and attend help sessions, there is really no reason at all you shouldn't be able to 4.0.
Physiology with Spranger is a very tough course. However, as long as you dedicate enough time to study and review the AQs before each exam, you will set yourself up for success. His lectures are very dense, but he does a great job at explaining. Performing well in this course will put you in a great position to do well in future healthcare classes.
Great class! He is easily accessible outside of class and has a big teaching staff that is always there to support you. I would highly encourage people to find the right ULA/SSHS to talk about the material and study habits, I had to go to multiple before settling on one. If you utilize the discord, lecture videos, and ULA's you will succeed!
I really enjoyed this class! The class was very tough, but also very beneficial and interesting for student interested in going into healthcare. There are so many ways and opportunities to do well in this class. Professor Spranger was a really good professor and explained things very thoroughly.
Professor Spranger has been one of the most influential people in my education. He truly cares, takes time to support his students, and makes hard topics click. The opportunities he provided me and everything I learned from him helped me prepare for PA school. I'm so thankful for his guidance, and he is easily my favorite professor at MSU.
Dr. Spranger is a tough professor, but that is because he cares about preparing his students and values them understanding rather than just memorizing everything. The class is supposed to be hard, but he offered many resources including him and his TAs. If you can't handle the rigors of basic science, then you don't belong in a health profession.
I retook this class after getting a 2.5 with another professor. Marty spranger made it very clear what I had to do to be successful in this class. With his advice I was able to 4.0. Physiology is going to be difficult no matter what, but spranger is a good professor who helps his students succeed.
Marty is a great professor who truly cares about providing the best possible material and feedback to advance his students to the next level. While quite difficult, it's absolutely worth taking with any future premed plans in mind.
The best professor I've ever had. The negative reviews are the people who don't work hard/can't handle honesty. The guy has a great personality. The class is extremely difficult but if you put the time in, you will do well.
I took Dr. Spranger this spring and thoroughly enjoyed his class. All of these reviews claiming he solicited students to leave a good review are blatantly false. He asked us to leave a Positive review IF we liked the class, therefore correcting the sample size of students who only leave reviews when they perform poorly. Dr. Spranger was amazing.
The class itself was a decent amount of work, but for the content difficulty, it honestly wasn't that bad. I think that the only people who were upset with Spranger's teaching style are the ones who did not try hard enough to 4.0. If you put the effort in, you will do well, and it sets you up really well for any post grad level classes.
He is an amazing professor and cares about his students learning. The material is challenging to learn, but he provides more than enough help for you to succeed. He cares about his students understanding the information for their future and office hours is always available. There are many sessions to meet with ULA for help as well. By far the best!
He genuinely cared that his students did well and provided all the information we needed to do well on exams. Physio is content heavy and he did a good job simplifying concepts. It was difficult to focus in lecture because of other students, but rewatching lectures helped and the exams could have easily been harder if he wanted them to be.
Yes this professor can be blunt and straightforward, and maybe even harsh. he has high expectations because it is a difficult coarse that literally teaches us the basics of everything we need to know going into healthcare profess.. i took this class very seriously, and did EVERYTHING i could to do well in the class-which i did. i'm glad i took it!!
if ur going in the the med field and think he and this course are tough… just wait lol. he's a VERY good professor and does a phenomenal job explaining everything he can to the best of his knowledge. if he doesn't know something he straight up says it. which is nice and something i really liked about him. just work ur butt off and ask questions!!!
Spranger is a passionate and thorough lecturer. Yes, this class is absolutely difficult and loaded, but it is NOT impossible to do well and have a life outside of class. Rewatch lectures and use the AQs. Manage your time. Everyone is different - find what works for you and reach out for help. If not to the prof, then to the TAs or even your peers.
This professor is by fat one of the strictest and unfair professors I've ever had. His teaching method left me very confused after leaving every class. Additionally, the online proctoring of exams were very unfair. He also made class feel not welcoming and would call people out during class! This made going to class feel very hostile.
Spranger cherry picks his favorite students and often shows a huge preference to those who go out of their way to be "super nice" to him. He makes disrespectful comments during lecture at times which makes going to class awful. He should focus more on being respectful and fair to his students.
I left quite a detailed review at the end of sem survey and gave a lot of constructive feedback. I was hoping that Spranger would at least attempt to read some of the comments left behind in hopes to improve. However, as usual, he thinks nothing of the feedback and continues to find no fault in himself. So disappointing to see from an MSU prof.
Most professors know the information but have a difficult time teaching. Dr. Spranger is one of the few who can teach a tough class in a way that is easy to understand. He provides all the resources needed to be successful in his class and gives an amazing foundation for the future. If I could go back, I would be a physiology major because of him.
Spranger teaches, one of the more difficult classes and it was disappointing to see how much he did not care for student success. As a senior, I've taken a lot more difficult classes since taking PSL 310 and I can confidently say that in every other difficult class I was taught the content 10 times better than with Spranger.
He's a tough grader and holds students to a high standard, but he's also fair and provides plenty of resources to help you succeed. He's approachable outside of class and genuinely wants students to learn. If you're willing to put in the work, you'll come out of his class better prepared for what's ahead.
This class is a lot of work but Spranger provides all of the tools to do well. The material is actually interesting and I have never learned better than in this class with Spranger's lectures. If you put the time in and apply yourself you will do well.
If you put in the work you will get a lot out of this class. Most I've learned in a college course over my 4 years. Resources available and the professors wants you to succeed.
Some will not enjoy the teaching style Dr. Spranger uses, as seen here. Use the first few classes to get an idea of the content style and take good notes outside of class. Drawings help and the ULAs are usually alright at explaining in a different ways if needed. Grades from Spranger aren't very different from previous PSL 310 profs on MSU grades.
This class is a turning point for a lot of premed students. In some ways, how and what you learn out of this class depends on you. I took this class and learned that though this class is extremely tough, if you take your time to learn, it will be a great experience. You get what you deserve in this class so if you must take it DO NOT CRAM, learn.
Professor Spranger is a great professor who gave us all we needed to succeed. The biggest thing to focus on in his class are his lectures, as the exam questions come straight from things we discussed in class. Thankfully he posts the entire lectures in D2L which makes getting a high grade on his exams very possible as long as you put the work in.
Spranger is one of the few professors that I have seen dedicate so much time and effort into ensuring that his students are learning. He offers so many external resources and has a team of 30+ ULAs running sessions to help students who are falling behind. The man truly is passionate about education. Class genuinely prepares you for med school.
Prof Spranger and his TAs go above and beyond to help students succeed. Attend the study skills and follow the guide he gives you, you can earn 4.0 I'm incredibly grateful I took this class and put in the effort to do it right. I got the outcome I had hoped for, and it was worth it. Put in the work, and this class will give it back to you tenfold
By far the best professor I have had in my three years. Dr. Spranger is passionate incomparable to any other professor I have had. His lectures are amazing, but definitely require you to rewatch outside of class as the slides are content heavy. Dr. Spranger has an amazing sense of humor which made going to lecture exciting. 10/10 class, I loved it.
The content covered in this course provided me with so much beneficial knowledge academically and professionally. I recently took my MCAT and I barely had to study extra biology material because of this class. Aside from the content itself though, Professor Spranger did a great job with bringing enthusiasm to his lectures and supporting students.
As a current PA student and prior PSL 310 student, it's a great class to help get you prepared with foundational knowledge! This class was never easy, but it was always fair. If you work hard and study efficiently, you will do well! Reach out to Spranger if you're struggling, he's tough but caring and very willing to help!
Expectations, resources, and helpful study skills are clearly outlined on the first day of class. While the content seems challenging to learn initially, the grade you get is proportional to the time and effort you invest in mastering it. The class material was helpful as a foundation for later undergrad classes and even graduate level education.
Professor Spranger taught through a lecture-exam format and showed genuine interest in teaching. While the content was clearly taught, and high grades are achievable, expect a very significant investment in time to effectively recall the accelerated material. Spranger offered many helpful resources, such as his office hours or peer-led tutoring.
This is a tough class made for students who want medical careers, so I feel that's a given. Although the material can be a lot to digest at times, Spranger was always willing to help if you put the effort in. He offered ~20 points of extra credit throughout the semester, and was willing to work around students' schedules to meet and review content.
Dr. Spranger is a good professor and this course is very interesting. The content can be challenging, but the professor outlines all the strategies needed to succeed, rewatch lectures and do the application questions! Exams are very fair. Overall, it is a really great class and you will learn so much.
Professor Spranger genuinely cares about student success. The class is tough but absolutely worth it. His study strategies work, and the skills I gained helped shape my academic journey and future success. If you're willing to put in the effort, this class will leave a lasting impact.
Reach out to him if you're struggling, he will make time to meet with you. Yes it's an incredibly hard class, but you will do great if you lock in from the start and do his study skills! I have ADHD and have always struggled with school, and I'm so shocked with how well I did even if it wasn't a 4.0. Pay attention, ask questions, and good luck!
This class is hard, probably the hardest class I've ever taken. However, it contains good info for aspiring medical professionals. Dr. Spranger is tough but he outlines everything you need in order to do well in his class. He provides lots of out of lecture opportunities for extra help and extra credit and truly wants his students to do well.
He has 600 students every semester, he won't remember who you are or what you did. Use that to your advantage! Remind him of your improvements and he'll see your dedication. Don't tell him how bad you did on a test, tell him how much better you did compared to the last! He cares more to see you working hard, not just being a perfect student
Professor Spranger is one of the most down to earth professors at Michigan State University. At first he can seem strict or unapproachable. After meeting him during office hours he is the most caring and personable person around. He truly cares about education of his students. I encourage every student to meet with him when taking his course.
The class is hard because the content is inherently hard. Studying consistently and managing your time is key to doing well. Even if you don't align with his personality, it is clear to see that Spranger cares about the success of his students. He offers resources online and in-person that will help you succeed if you take advantage of them.
I hope you get that promotion!!
Yes, this class can be hard. But Spranger makes it less of a “have to” and more of a “get to”. He cares so much about his student's forward progress and provides so many opportunities for them to succeed. While the lectures are long and intensive, he breaks them up with fun anecdotes that do help with the length and extra credit opportunities.
Does a great job of explaining topics, providing effective ways to remember complex psychological systems. Exam questions are specific, but he does a great job of preparing you for the type of questions, content, and emphasizes active recall (useful for further studies). Lectures are content-heavy, but he does a great job of keeping you engaged.
Spranger was a great teacher! Yes it is true, his exams are hard, but you know what else is hard? College, life, life after college. His course was one of the few that I appreciated how much knowledge I gained after walking out of lecture. Overall, his course prepared me more more medical school and the MCATs than any other offered at MSU.
Dr. Spranger showed little concern for students beyond academics and often came across as arrogant and dismissive. He frequently called out students in ways that felt unnecessary and uncomfortable, creating a tense learning environment that made it hard to stay engaged.
Dr. Spranger is an amazing professor! He truly cares about his students. He takes the time to support and connect with everyone in his class. His lectures are always engaging and very interesting. Overall, he makes learning both enjoyable and meaningful.
Professor Spranger genuinely cares about his students success and offers all the resources one could need to succeed in the classroom.
Spranger is an amazing professor and it is very evident he cares about his students and their future. This class can be difficult due to the content, but Spranger offers many study sessions that are very helpful if you are struggling. As long as you stay on top of studying and take advantage of the resources he provides you can do very well.
Spranger provides more student support than ANY other professor I had at MSU. He offers extensive office hours, study skill reviews, content review sessions, and a complete guide on how to study for the course. At first he will seem intimidating, but speak to him and you will quickly see that he cares about every student's individual success.
This class is one of those that you get out what you put into it. Spranger might come off as 'scary', but he is one of the most inspiring professors that wants you to actually learn. You will not do well in this class if you simply just memorize facts for the exam. Spranger is a down to earth professor that wants to see students succeed.
Professor Spranger genuinely wants his students to succeed. He's always available, takes time to explain things clearly, and makes learning feel meaningful. If you're willing to put in the work, he'll go above and beyond to help you understand and do well.
Spranger is an AMAZING professor. His love for physiology is apparent, and he genuinely wants his students to succeed. The course itself has plenty of opportunities for students to receive help outside classroom time, including his personal help room hours. I recommend this class to everyone, it has been my favorite class throughout college.
I took PSL310 with Spranger my Junior year at MSU and reflecting back after graduating I can confidently say it was the most enjoyable, beneficial, and interesting courses I ever took in all of undergrad. This class is HUGE for preparing you for the bio/biochem portion of the MCAT, carriers over into key higher level course content. I love Spranger!
One of my favorite professors and courses I took at MSU!
I had Dr. Spranger in Fall 2021, and he is one of the best professors I've ever had. Is the material tough, yes, but he is an effective teacher and I still remember the material taught today. This helped me immensely with my MCAT prep. In addition, Dr. Spranger is a joy to speak with outside of class and is interested in your success.
Professor Spranger is very passionate about physiology. He is great at explaining complex topics. He goes the extra mile for his students and tries his best to make sure anyone who wishes to excel in his class is able to.
Dr. Spranger is an amazing professor. He appreciates hard work, what you put in is what you will get out. Use his study skills... I can confidently say those are what got me through the rest of my degree at msu. Still to this day, I am in graduate school and use those same skills. So glad I got to learn from him.
Many may think Spranger's class was very hard, and don't get me wrong, physiology is a heavy course. But the way Spranger designs the course not only prepares you to do well in the exams, but in the rest of your pre-health classes. His study skills are very clear and effective, and if you follow them, you will do well in the course.
The content itself is pretty complicated, however, Professor Spranger gives you all of the tools and resources that you may need in order to do well in the class. Tools, resources, and study methods I intend to apply to many of my other classes. This class, specifically the professor and his style, made me a better student.
Dr. Spranger is able to make lectures extremely engaging with connections to almost every healthcare field (dentistry, pharmacy, medical, nursing, physician assistant...). He is engaged in the material and rather than reading off slides, he lectures his own experiences and thoughts. His slides are not word-heavy so you can sit back and listen.
Dr. Spranger is the best professor I've had at MSU. I was a chemistry major who felt disconnected from my studies, but his class changed everything. I enjoyed it so much I switched my major to Physiology. His energy, clarity, and passion made two-hour lectures feel like 20 minutes.
if ur reading these 5 star rating, he sent out an email begging students to submit those and he writes his own reviews. Hi Marty, do better than begging for a good review.
He's rigorous and holds students to a high standard, which pushed me to grow. When I was confused, he explained concepts clearly and patiently. I loved his class so much that I sat in on future lectures just to learn from him again. MSU is lucky to have a professor like him.
Dr. Spranger genuinely cares about his students. He not only helped me succeed in the class, but also helped me find direction in my academic and professional goals. An amazing professor, mentor, and human being—MSU is lucky to have him!
PSL 310 is very lecture heavy and you have to spend a lot of time outside of class re-watching the lecture. Professor Spranger does an amazing job of explaining information and will often say what is or isn't on the exam. If your taking this class, your looking to do something in the medical field and this course prepares you very well.
Look. You either love Spranger or don't. I personally think he's a good guy but his style of teaching is to be desired. Hour 50 lectures, tests are entirely based on that. Don't take any other hard courses while taking PSL310. Definitely need that study time.
PSL 310 is a difficult class, but if you put the time and effort in, you can succeed. The class is lecture heavy and requires plenty of time, but that is something disclosed to you on day one. Dr. Spranger is a great professor and is always looking to help his students succeed!
By nature, PSL 310 is very content heavy, but I found Dr. Spranger's lectures to be informative, clear, and engaging. Also, the exams were exclusively based on content covered in lecture. I put a lot into this class, and I know the study habits I built and the information I learned will serve me in my future studies. MSU is lucky to have Spranger!
Pretty sure Spranger wrote most of these, the wording and sentence structure are almost identical to his emails. Anyways, the class itself is great, but the instructor is awful. Marty, I hope you don't get that promotion
The hardest class I've taken but I enjoyed the course. You'll need to attend lecture + rewatch lecture videos + do AQs. Anything covered in lecture is testable! Expect to study ~10hrs a week but the professor is easily accesible and office hours are very informative. Easy to comprehend lectures but extremely dense in content. Gives plenty resources
Dr. Spranger was the best instructor I've had the pleasure of learning from during my four years at MSU. His course is difficult and requires a lot of work to put into it, but the time and attention he's willing to provide to get you there means those who truly wish to 4.0 absolutely will. I remember more from this course than any other
botted his reviews, just know his lectures line up somewhat with the assignments given out; but the exams have little to no correlation. pretty condescending as a professor as well, but oh well
One of the best professors I've had at MSU! PSL 310 is challenging, but he truly wants his students to succeed. He provides tons of support including engaging and detailed lectures, study skills sessions, generous office hours, and multiple extra credit opportunities. He teaches you the material AND how to study effectively. Highly recommend!
Just overall a terrible professor… didn't care if we actually learned but more of if HE thought us something …
PSL 310 is an amazing course that remains one of my favorites. There's a lot of content but w/ enough effort & (if needed) the use of the numerous help sessions that run throughout the semester, it's an easy A. Spranger's passion for physiology + the interesting information present in each lecture make the course enjoyable & fun to learn.
PSL310 was my most difficult class, but Spranger did well to prepare us. His study strategy involves rewatching lecture videos, writing your own notes out, and doing the AQs at the end, and it worked great. This class is manageable if you put in the work. Overall Spranger taught us well for this class and future classes as well.
Dr. Spranger teaches challenging courses, but is extremely passionate about the physiology that he teaches. He is a great mentor for those pursuing careers in medicine. Dr. Spranger teaches all students how to study efficiently and truly understand material. He has high expectations and wants the best for his students. I would highly recommend.
Dr.Spranger is very big on all students being able to be successful in his class and I would agree that that is true-- everything is there for you to get that 4.0 but rest assured that you'll have to work VERY hard for it. I highly recommend taking his course bc its very comprehensive and highly beneficial if you're pursuing anything pre-health.
It's a 600 person class and you can't give everyone an A. Dr. Spranger cares about his students and gives you resources to do well. I could've gotten a better grade if I showed up to his review sessions. People that give bad reviews are unfortunately part of the crowd that believes their performance in a class relies entirely on their professor.
This class is a lot, but the way I saw it was an introduction to what as a pre-health professional I will be learning in just a few years. He gives all the resources needed to succeed in this class, and he makes the lectures interesting. Study hard (and smart) and you will be rewarded. Best class I've taken at MSU.( P.S. go to SSHS u wont regret)
Take this class. It is lecture heavy and there is a ton of information: follow the study skills. It's an investment well worth your time and Spranger is always available to provide help with material. I found his approach highly engaging and entertaining. You can tell he truly cares about not only the subject matter but all 600 students in lecture.
"I know this is.. a bit petty... I do not take this stuff too much to heart... However, when I went up for promotion last year for Associate Professor, a superior of mine mentioned that I get a lot of negative comments here.. You are a stellar student..." He sent this email to only his glazers. THE REVIEWS HERE ARE SKEWED. Do better, Marty.
theres some form of discrepancy occurring behind the scenes. i wont be surprised if the ombuds get involved soon and discover something. just know the professor has his favorites, and puts down the others that aren't. thanks for making physiology unenjoyable!
He explains tough concepts by using real world examples that makes it easier to understand. If you don't pay attention in his class it is very easy to get lost and behind but he has scheduled study groups where you can go to try and catch back up or understand a concept better.
Look, his class is very challenging and you will have to WORK for that 4.0, but the information I learned in the class has really helped me with future health courses. I recommend taking his class with a lighter course load so you can dedicate the true time needed, but study hard and shoot high, the info you learn is very valuable (PS: Go to SSHS!)
Yeah this is very skewed. He sent an email to all students to give him a rating and mass reports negative reviews.
Made me feel uneasy. Lots of ramblings and rants about the disgruntles with other classmates of mine. I personally do not have an issue, but it makes me question the academic integrity of the course. Otherwise, I found the class to be okay if you have some background in anatomy.
This class is not easy. But with that being said, I have never learned more for a course at MSU. Professor Spranger was a very interactive and caring professor. He wants us to do well. He holds review sessions and study skills sessions that are alot of help. Work hard, its rewarding. This material will be beneficial as a pre-health major.
The class truly is foundational for medicine, and I found it manageable despite it being difficult because of the content load. However it is completely unacceptable to fake reviews for your class. As a professor you should be encouraging honesty and integrity. Shame on him. This is for students to speak, use other platforms to share your thoughts.
i would highly question msu and the physiology department if they gave this man a promotion...being a professor also means being a role model of good character. these reviews are clearly solicited/written by spranger himself. constantly posting to increase overall rating for personal gain. *last real reviews written around may 1st 2025*
He makes use of this website to boost himself. He sent an email out questioning why he did not receive any direct words of appreciation for giving out some points. Real work of a course load, averages of any exam do not pass 70% at most. I'd suggest taking this at a community college or elsewhere for your own sake.
Look, Professor Spranger's class is tough and you'll EARN that grade, but it's worth it. The material sticks with you and helps in future courses. And no, he doesn't write his own reviews—he's just that good. Take it seriously and you'll grow from it. (PS: Go to SSHS!)
honestly the course isn't the worst ive taken at msu. a lot of it does require more work than the regular class. although, I agree that its a bit shameful to write your own reviews to increase ratings. take the class though if you need for prehealth since it helps a lot. but expect to put in about 3-4 hours a day to review it
I have learned and remembered the most information in this class in comparison to any other course I have taken. However, you have to be ready to schedule out a LOT of time for this course. It takes time and energy, but is very rewarding. The content was very interesting.
This professor does not care for you outside of the classroom. He has an unmeasurable ego and he is not that caring. He often created a hostile environment in the classroom.
This professor often created an uncomfortable environment with his rude and condescending behavior and with this insensitive comments toward others.
This professor sent a mass email to his students requesting for a positive review so that he can get a promotion. Screams egotistical and insecure to say the least. Would never recommend as a mentor.
Professor was not any more accessible than any other professor but touted the fact he had open times to meet. Class was bearable when studying with people and the TAs helped a lot. I would not take this class if you do not need it for requirements, as I ended up studying physiology more on my own for the MCAT making this course a waste of money
Professor Spranger is one of the most passionate and supportive instructors I've had. His class is tough but incredibly rewarding. If you put in the effort and use the resources he provides, you'll not only succeed, you'll leave truly prepared for your future. He genuinely cares and goes above and beyond for his students.
The material and lectures in Spranger's course provided a strong foundation in physiology, needed in any medical field. In Spranger's lectures he was engaged with the content as well as students, all while finishing lecture on time or early. Outside of class were many helpful resources including content review and note taking review sessions.
I took this class twice and both times was baffled by how disconnected the exams were from the rest of the content. Professor was rude and condescending, his ego needs to be put in check. Class would have been enjoyable if taught by someone who doesn't need to ask students to write them positive reviews. Don't take it unless you absolutely have to.
Unaccommodating and egotistical. Blames students when 65% avg
So much energy and enthusiasm in lecture about wanting his students to learn. His class is hard and takes a time commitment, but if you're trying to pursue medicine, his class is key. It taught me about 15-20% of the content on the MCAT and he helped me achieve my best score on the bio section. I couldn't have asked for a better prof!!
It is a very difficult class on two parts: your own sacrifice to learn the material and the undertones of animosity behind the professor. The course is very detailed and review is extremely necessary to pass the class and if you're not willing to do that, you shouldn't be taking it. It has however helped me prepare for future classes.
His lectures are 2 hours full of content-heavy material, fancy vocab, and a 5 min break if you're lucky. The wording for his exams is tricky and the average score is usually around 60%. He has a lot of help room hours and gives free extra credit, but overall it is just an unreasonable "intro class" to take as a full time student.
Marty is a very passionate professor and really cares about his students success. Most of the people on here are just mad because they didn't study and blame him for it. Is his class hard? Yes, but that is what you can expect for a pre-med class. He is trying to teach the next generation of healthcare workers!
This is truly a great professor. I'm not even doing that well in the class, but it is all fault of my own. He posts the video lectures online, answers questions, and offers many modes of support: study skills sessions, office hours, and content review sessions. There is a lot of content and tricky material, but his exams are very straightforward.
so much work and so much content
Do not take this class if you are taking a lot of classes. This class would be perfectly reasonable if you took it by itself, but when mixed with other challenging courses, it is hard to find a balance as this class required almost all of your free time.
Ok, so realistically the amount of 5 star reviews here are skewed because he allegedly told a bunch of student to give him a good review, but he's also not a 1 quality and 5 difficulty either. I took the class 3 years ago, and I'm here to give an accurate review and say he actually is a solid teacher, but the class is extraordinarily difficult.
On the first day, he talked about how he had to work hard and isn't naturally smart which I really resonated with. Disappointed how empathy lacking and egotistical this professor ended up being. Doesn't respect RCPD accommodations (which literally isn't allowed) and singles students out in a 300 ppl lecture Content is clinical and interesting tho.
I went into this class scared based on the reviews on here. I do think the exams are fair and could only blame myself If I didn't study enough. He offers a lot of extra credit, which I assume is due to the 68% exam average. Overall, he's not terrible but can be egotistical. Just go in wanting to learn and dedicate lotss of time and you'll be fine.
Literally so egotistical. Maybe not ask people to write reviews for you. Average of 600 students is like 67% then blames students when it's his fault. Mabe make your class where students actually want to learn. Also understand we have other classes on top of yours!!!!!!!
Disgusted by his arrogance, dismissiveness, lack of empathy, & world outlook. Class is unbearable as he disregards students' struggles & other responsibilities & creates an uncomfortable & discouraging environment. Pre-health students deserve an instructor who respects and cares for them. Do not expect support during unpredictable emergencies :)
Ironic that a course so fundamental to pre-health careers is taught by someone so fundamentally disconnected from effective teaching. Interesting content ruined by a terrible professor. Do better, Matry...and don't email students asking for good reviews again, it's inappropriate and will not save the poor reputation you created.
The professor makes people feel scared and uncomfortable. He has a passion for the content, but not for his students. I think I would have enjoyed this class with a different professor teaching it. Very disappointed to say the least.
I wanted to like Spranger. He does have many office hours and review sessions. He says he wants you to do well. This all means nothing. He expects a disgusting amount of work to be done. I should not have to re-listen to his entire lecture after just getting out of the 2 hour class that I just listened too.
Honestly, Spranger does a great job teaching. It is nearly impossible to get through the physiology of the entire human body in 1 semester, but he does it. He gives out extra credit, but this class honestly just takes A TON of work outside. Take this on an easy courseload or you won't succeed. Offers an INSANE amount of help rooms though.
I am genuinely surprised this man still has a job.I heard nothing but horror stories going into this class and every single one was true.He covers so much material in one sitting and is so rude when students ask a question and look confused still once he has answered. He preaches how with hard work you will get good grades.WRONG!His class proves it.
The workload was overwhelming, expectations felt unrealistic, and the constant stress took a serious toll on my mental health and performance in other classes. If you care about your mental health or maintaining any kind of balance in your life, I would not recommend taking him. This class made my entire semester miserable.
Taking this class means giving up your life outside school. You can't have a job, hobbies, or free time, and the workload will drain you to the point of feeling depressed. It took over my entire semester and left me exhausted. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
This course was brutally unrealistic. Unless you're naturally gifted, it feels impossible to succeed. I poured in endless hours for minimal payoff. The workload was excessive, the expectations unreasonable, and the class left me stressed, defeated, and questioning why it was designed this way.
This class was so overwhelming that if I ever had to retake it, I'd honestly rather drop out or change my major. The workload and stress were unreal, and it drained every bit of enjoyment I had for the subject. Easily the most discouraging class I've taken.
I went to every office hour, every TA session, and spent entire weekends studying, yet this class still wrecked my GPA. The level of difficulty felt unreasonable, and despite constant effort, I'm now forced to retake it. This course was exhausting and deeply discouraging. I dont understand why a professor likes to see us fail???????????????
This class made me dread opening my books and seriously question whether I should stay at this school. No matter how hard I worked, it felt like nothing was enough. The professor's attitude was cold, unhelpful, and exhausting, creating one of the most demoralizing academic experiences I've ever had. I cannot believe he has not gotten fired yet.
Honestly just a horrible human and an even worse professor. How can someone keep a job with such a horrible personality and ability to teach. He makes MSU look like a joke. We should donate him back to Wayne State.
This class left me drained and questioning why a course this consistently demoralizing hasn't been redesigned or reassigned. I don't understand how students are still expected to go through this experience with no alternative instructor. The teaching approach felt cold, unsupportive, and discouraging at every step. IMPOSSIBLE TO SUCCEED.
This class was a storm no one asked to survive, A place where hope goes to die while deadlines thrive. The “teaching” felt hollow, like words tossed in air. Explanations so empty it was almost unfair. Only people with no life could keep up with this strain. We traded our weekends, our sleep, and our peace, Yet somehow the chaos refused to decrease.
NEWSFLASH SPRANGER!!! SOME PEOPLE HAVE LIVES OUTSIDE OF YOUR PHYSIO CLASS!!!! Stop giving us stupid connects. Honestly stop teaching please. Just do everyone including yourself a favor and give up on teaching you are not good at it and it's time to accept that.
A semester crushed beneath his grade, My science dreams began to fade. Workload rising like a tide, No life, no breath, nowhere to hide. Joy erased, hope growing dim— All undone by learning with him. If forced to take this class anew, I'd drop my major, start anew. Thank you ChatGPT for this poem I had it create when I told it about Marty Farty!
I mean I don't even know why this class is a requirement for my major if someone like Spranger is the only option for this GOD AWFUL CLASS. I wasted my time going over the content that Helen wrote and made a bunch of mistakes on. The class was unbearably long I started to question who I was as an individual in the pre-med field. PLS HIRE A NEW PROF
My jaw dropped to the ground when I saw his rating above a 0! At this point, I should have just gone to a community college like him. Why did MSU make the mistake of hiring him? They must have listened with no ears. Why screw students over? Why make them suffer to the point they had to make an appointment through MSU CAPS?
I am laughing so hard that one of his main tags is AMAZING LECTURES. I'm sorry who is lying?!?! His lectures are actually the most miserably boring lecture I have ever had to sit in. Also MSU get new lecture chairs if you are ever going to make another student sit through his class or fire Marty or maybe both;)
NO. JUST NO. NAH. NOT AGAIN. NEVER. ABSOLUTELY NOT. NEGATIVE. NOT A CHANCE. I DECLINE. I REFUSE. I CRY. NO BUENO. I MUST OPPOSE. REJECTED. The only people 4.0ing are the ones cheating on their lockdown browser exams and getting away with it. This class is honestly impossible and I cannot believe I wasted money, time, tears and gas.
This man should switch career paths. Don't give no sob story the first day ever again. Everyone can make there life sound like a sob story. Stop thinking you are better and different. Your not! Everyone has overcome something. If people made it through your class with a will to live they have overcome a lot.
I mean there cannot be a more awful class than this one. I wish this was not a class required for my major. I would rather step on legos with my bare feet than take this again. I would rather rewrite a 10-page paper the night it's due than take this again. I would rather redo organic chemistry I and II in the same semester than take this again.
Talk about ChatGPT being a man's best friend. You would think a physio professor would be able to answer a students question from the knowledge in his brain but don't worry he can read what AI has to say instead.
I will list the few things I would imagine are actually worse then this class: 1. Catching on fire 2. Getting sentenced to life in prison (maybe not even worse idk) 3. Sleeping in a frozen river 4. Being buried alive
I was going in with an open mind after hearing the world's worst experiences but no! All the negative experiences did in fact occur. Choose yourself and your sanity before adding this class to your shopping cart:) Maybe consider taking CALC 5 AND ORGAN 1& II IN THE SAME SEMESTER BEFORE EVEN THINKING ABOUT TAKING THIS CLASS!!!
Spranger made me wanna jump in the red cedar. He is so rude it makes me wonder what happened in his life to make him this way. He talks so creepy about women too.
Genuinely think he uses chatgpt to stuff as much "content" on a slide stack as possible for his 2 hour lecture, then expects you to quote them verbatim.
not a bad class, if you wanna throw away your phone, family, friends, any social life you had, any external thoughts other than this class and more. Expects us to eat, sleep and breathe this class. Content is sometimes interesting tho lol WAR IS OVER THO
Terrible. Sets students up for failure by expecting you to make this class your life. Don't take other hard classes at the same time otherwise it's super overwhelming. Randomly assign homework and quizzes with no notification besides an email. Super arrogant and when you ask him for help he points you to someone else instead of doing his job.
It is such a shame that I came into a class I had so much interest and passion in and this was my experience. Dr Spranger is arrogant and rude with a god complex. If you want to succeed be prepared to throw away your job, other classes, extracurriculars, and any social life you may have had.
This class is absolutely the worst class I ha ever taken at MSU. Professor does not take into account that people have other classes, jobs, extracurriculars, or a life at all outside of his class. He is so arrogant and overconfident, when half the time he can't even answer people's questions in lecture. Avoid this class at all costs if possible.
OMG MARTY YOU ARE A HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!! actually made me hate my life for the last semester. like ur content has so many interesting topics but you ruin everything you touch. MSU pls fire him.... he's a horrible teacher he needs to relearn this topic to teach. someone needs to shadow him and try to learn. you would know nothing
He was terrible! I didn't enjoy his class at all. He didn't care about his students and wanted them to fail. Always giving tests that were impossible!! I studied 60+ hours and still got a D+. SO disappointing because I am a 4.0 student and he had no mercy on me.
I did good in the class and I just don't like this prof. OMG he's horrible. I feel so bad for people who had other hard classes. No way you could ever do well in this class with a single other class. He's boring, confusion and unnecessarily hard.
MDS STFU!!! IF I EVER SEE ONE OF YOUR DISCORD NOTIFICATION AGAIN!!! I actually cannot believe he has made it this long as a prof he should've stayed in med school (supposedly made it to med school, sus) bc teaching is not for you. hes so creepy and weird to all students. just over all rude and i'm surprised the university puts up with him.
Never take this class and switch your major before you ever have to take this class!
I am honestly humiliated by him! He was absolutely awful and didn't care about his students at all. Left my roommates crying most days, and it really affected their mental health. So bad, terrible, heart-wrenching, crying, throwing up
He preaches that you need to work hard to succeed, but no amount of all-nighters, office hours, and help rooms will make a 4.0 feel worth it, and at the end of the day, you don't learn anything. His questions are worded so trickily that ChatGPT can't even figure it out. PSL 310 needs a new professor, or it needs to not be a requirement for BLD.
worse than cse 232 im not joking. he treats us like we're in med school... med school classes are made for people who experienced 4 years of college and are prepared to sacrifice personal life to study. i know u need to get used to the fast pace but he acts like its a personal failure if u do bad on an exam. the class itself is interesting. 4.0 btw
Only way to study for this class was to genuinely pull an all nighter the night before each exam because you had to remember every single little detail in 10+ hours of lectures. When I think of this class I think of the Regina George burn book scene.
I cant believe the other recent reviews posted about Spranger. It's undoubtedly a difficult course (probably the most difficult at MSU), but there is nothing stopping anyone from getting a 4.0 (except laziness). The fact people say he doesn't care about students is not only mean but also 100% not true. Kind of a silly guy; can be rude though
By far the most miserable I've been in a class my 3 years in college. A lot of your grade depends on attendance and remembering parts of lectures he spends maybe 2 seconds going over. Had to email him over 16 times to solve an issue that he created and had 0 respect for students who have jobs/responsibilities/other classes.
Spranger is very condescending. If a professor makes it a point to attend "study skills sessions" to get a better grasp of curriculum, they need to rethink your teaching style. Everyone learns differently and so much time was wasted pushing this on students instead of improving the way things are taught. I'm convinced the 5/5 reviews are bots.
be prepared to make sacrifices to even remotely have a chance at passing this course. he single-handedly made my entire semester extremely difficult and i often had to weigh what classes to work on more than others (spoiler alert: this class)
i think all the 1.0 ratings are a bit dramatic. u should be going into this class knowing it's going to be hard, so blaming the prof for ur shortcomings won't do anything. i will say the quizzes being assigned randomly without a set schedule was really annoying, and i missed 2 on accident at the start of class bc i neglected checking my email :(
I have just gone through reading all of the 1 star reviews. I took this class along with chemistry, physics and calculus. His class is hard, but very doable. He is a good professor teaches well, everyone complaining simply did not put in the work and is salty. There is an absurd amount of content but study 1-1.5 hours a day and you will 100% 4.0.
Marty is a prick, flat out. HOWEVER he is a good teacher and anyone who says differently has an even bigger ego than he does. What you put into the class is what you get out. He also tells you what to focus on for the exams. What people don't understand is that the class is supposed to be hard because it weeds out people who don't like to work hard
One of the hardest upper level bio courses for pre-meds. This will make / break you. Lots of homework/reading due every week, including quizzes. If you watch the study skill video he provides at the beginning and seek help with studying, you can 4.0. He is intimidating but he knows how to teach well if you put in a lot of time & effort
Wasted 1st day of class to handshake every single students hand? 500 students?? Bro... Also was not nice in the discord chat. I rmbr some ppl were just asking normal questions and he kicked them out. Was also weird with girls
DO NOT GO TO SPRANGERS OFFICE, it's more a dungeon you will see some . heyyo got extra credit tho, won't walk well ever again
