He is a straight shooter, he tells it like is going to be and if you can't deal then DROP. A&P isn't supposed to be easy, and dropping a test score simply shows you want an easy A. I had him for Bio and now for A&P and I will take him again if I can.
he is extreamly hard and he's more than ready to show off, he has no problem with failing everyone. Drop his class!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He knows what he's talking about, and his tests are only hard if you don't UNDERSTAND the material. It's not always about memorizing with Marty. He's good stuff, flat out.
It's pathetic how Marty has to go on this website and give his ownself positive ratings. Don't trust the positive comments. It could very well be Marty Spranger.
agreed. marty OBVIOUSLY comments on this. Just another way for him to try and boost his ego.

i thought he was pretty bad at first, and dont get me wrong he's still pretty tough, but he goes into a LOT of detail, which i think will help us in the long run. The biggest problem i have with him is that he goes WAY 2 FAST!!! he barely gives u a chance to write something before he shoves more at u. i had to listen to everything over again online
The man is all brains. When taking his exams pay attn to all details. he trys to trick more than teach you on the exams. BE READY FOR ALLL EXAMS. IT is possible to get an A
I don't care what anybody says he is the best, if the students come to his lectures and study on their own time they'll get an A. lots of students complain way too much. com on now you guys are in college aren't you used to it by now
People **** about him too much. He says his exams will be from what he says in lecture, and that is exactly what they are. The questions are tricky and if you don't read the entire question, you will screw up. But since half the people in this class want to be in medicine, you have to pay attention to everything, its only preparing you for the futu
I don't know what are those people written about. He is not a great teacher, he is cool and not understanding people situation type of person. He does not care about you only his own job. He gives out extra credit, but that does not made him a great teacher. Just a teacher I look down on. He does not care about you fail, but care about his job.
Drop him if you have any chance to take with an other professor.
He is hard and also if you have question. He put his ego first and then he will help you with it. He lower your confident a lot. He thinks himself is all that. He said things without caring of others feeling. Really cold professor. I don't recommend taking him as a professor.
I believe his is very clear with his lectures. You get screwed by his exams every time. He emphasizes listening to his online lectures, but not many people want to sit at a computer for hours at a time, listening to someone speak. It's good to attend the lectures. By the way, he loves reading his ratings on this site. Doncha, Marty?
Run like hell. He doesn't care if you do good or not. I think he gets his kicks from watching everyone squirm. This is my second time taking his class. This time I go to the SI, listen to his lectures online, read the book and study, but I only have a C. Focus hard on the labs. That will help alot.
Want to know how bad this professor is? Wayne State TRICKS people into signing up for his class by putting another teacher's name, then switching it last moment and saying that Prof. Stephenson is "retiring". YEAH, retiring every semester for 3 years already. BTW, don't trust the "good" comments-- HE WRITES THEM.
Ok Prof. He's a little high-strung. Try to be extra polite, no jokes, etc. Tests are hard but doable. He tests from lectures, not book.
you really have to pay attention to his lectures that's what he bases his tests on. overall a good class, but he has quite a bit to say. (he curves well if it's necessary)
Exams are way too difficult; tricky wording. I attended lecture every day, read the book, reviewed notes and still barely passed this class. I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone. Professor's attitude makes him unapproachable. Not the worst professor ever but extremely undesirable as one. Avoid!
I had taken BIO1510 with Curtis Green before this one. Marty's lecture was far better. He knows his stuff. You really don't need the text. On the first exam I tried to study the text also and wasted time. Stick to only his notes. Listen to his lecture recordings. Though his syllabus does not mention it - he lets you drop one exam.
he's the best professor I’ve had at Wayne state university.......if u want to truly learn the subject then he's the teacher u should register for....he's the best……..i recommend him for anybody who's pre med /pre pharm/ and any bio majors
2 words: ANGER MANAGEMENT He needs it. He actually INTERRUPTED lecture to yell at someone who was asleep (not snoring or anything, just sleeping), saying that HE was being interrupted by them sleep in front of him. Also, I understand it's a slight distraction when someone comes late, but HEY MARTY it's an even bigger 1 when you stop & yell at them
HE IS BEST PROF AT WAYNE FOR BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT. I LEARNED GREAT AMOUNT OF INFORMATION IN HIS CLASS. I WOULD DEFINETLY RECOMAND TO TAKE HIS CLASS. HE DOES GREAT JOB TEACHING HIS CLASS.
Personally, nothing above an okay teacher. If you're memory is good, lab=A. Sometimes hard to keep up in lecture. I personally question his exams. Try to take in fall, more time.
This class and teacher was one of the best ive ever took at wayne state marty cleary explains everything just like the book. If u stay on top of all the reading and lab reading u will get an A. he dropped one exam.As far as lab goes there is alot of memorization but the major things they will let u know up front to study ahead great class
He is the one of the hardest teacher. You have to listen to lecture, study the notes and read the chapters to get an A in his class. His exams are hard even though he drop 1 exam. He likes to make mean comments.
THIS WAS BY FAR MY FAVORITE CLASS EVER! I LEARNED SO MUCH. EXTREAMLY HELPFUL WHEN I TOOK MY PCAT. VERY RELEVANT INFO THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY IN THE FUTURE. TAUGHT ME GREAT STUDY HABITS. 1 TIP: RE-LISTEN TO LECTURES, AND SHOW UP FOR CLASS. TESTS ARE HARD, BUT HIS CURVE MORE THAN MAKE UP FOR IT.
this guy really knows his stuff and is very good at helping you understand things. however, he can be very rude to students and he purposely tries to trick you on his exams. some people think that helps you become a better student, i think it just makes it harder to pass the class. i had to put a lot of studying time in order to do well in class
good teacher. I learned how to think again. he is slightly arrogant, but it makes sense with his style of teaching.

I want to thank Prof. Spranger for the excellent class .It was one of the best class I > had at Wayne State, even though it was a hard class and I did not get an A. The exams were hard, but they made me think in a totally different way. I am taking a Kaplan course preparing for graduate school and I apply everything I learned in his class.
This teacher has the biggest Ego on this planet! He enjoys watching his students suffer during his exams. You dedicate the longest hours toward studying and it feels like it didn't pay off as soon as you take the test. He really doesn't care if you pass or fail and the highest average he ever received for an exam was a 59. If you can take this with
Spranger is such an interesting guy. He knows his stuff, other than certain concepts, but overall he is a fair teacher. His lectures are boring, but they are a must. Exams are tricky and pulls you towards different directions. He is also HOT! Main reason I have attended all his lectures.
Very tough professor but he knows what he is talking about and is willing to help if you don't understand. If you need anatomy take him he's a great professor.
Worst teacher in the world!!! SO not fair on exams he is useless.....
For the first time in three years at WSU I have found what I would call an awesome college prof. Extremely good lecturer and a dunny guy. His exams are beastly but you gotta work for the good grade. Honestly the highest recommendation out of any WSU prof.
He's seriously amazing. Definitely the best bio prof I've had at Wayne. (Plus how many other profs are you going to find who speak clear English!) You don't really need to read the book, his lectures are thorough...just go to class or listen to lectures.
Im going to establish for a fact he is an ****! After you get over the fact hes pretty cool! Espicially if you talk 1 on 1 wih him! Secondly hes got balls of lead so dont get in his face! Thirdly challenge him cause if you dont that means your weak and you werent meant to survive according to darwin god bless his soul! Study and youll pass;)
This is one of the best bio profs at Wayne!! Tests are hard and lecture moves by fast, but if you go to class, take notes, and listen to the audio recordings you will get an A.
I got a flippin' 89% and he couldn't give me a flippin' A-! I worked hard in this class and am so frustrated with this dude. He's cool but after I heard him curse because someone raised their hand to ask a question during the final, I lost all respect.
This is THE BEST SCIENCE CLASS I've taken @ WSU along w/cell bio! He knows his stuff & I wish he taught every bio class! I enjoyed every single bit of it & learned a WHOLE LOT. The class isn't hard IF you're willing to put in effort. He's very approachable & is willing to help you out! Just get ready to work ur a** off for the A! YOU ROCK MARTY!!!
HANDS DOWN THE BEST PROF. OF ALL TIME. If you can do well in this class you can master any class with no problem, he is really here to help you learn. I mean sure hes no pushover if you dont put in the effort you wont do well at all but the complexity of his exam is really mind stimulating and will keep you on your toes throughout the semester.
Sprnager really is excellent, he really knows his stuff, more than that I love the way he lecutes. When you take his class you really develop a new way of thinking. Great job spranger, hope you do what you do, by the way i got a solid A, why: he answered any quetions i had, he was clear, and I loved that class!
Very informed professor. I wish he instructed more classes. WSU needs more professors like this.
Very challenging course, learned a lot. Forced me to think and use my brain for a change =:)
I got an A but I had to work for it. This is not a "gimme" class. He some times so fast that you can't keep up, thankfully there are recordings....USE THEM! He always says that he'll give you a regrade if you make a valid point about his somestimes invalid questions...not true. Hard but not impossible
Two words to describe Spranger, THE BEST. He is not an easy teacher but not impossible to get an A in his class. He loves teaching and he really cares about his students. Take him for A&P
good at teaching. have to know EVERYTHING he talks about in detail to get an A. try not to deal with him outside the class, he is good at making you feel stupid. and keep your own grade records.
Always prepared and prehaps the best lecturer in the department. Very engaging and demanding, but well worth the challenge.
Best prof I had in my 3 years at WSU. He is intimidating in the beginning and he has an attitude but if you ever need help he is ready and willing. He lectures at a very fast pace and the best thing to do is to go to his lectures and take notes and then listen to the audio recording online and really understand what he is saying.
I am ashamed that I did not leave a comment right after I took this class (06'). Spranger is extremely intelligent, interesting, and loves the material he teaches. After his final, student after student came to shake his hand as they turned in their exams. Listen to the lectures and take notes and you are set to get an A. Bestcollegeexperienceever!
Spranger is God of anat. and physiology. If every science prof was like him, we'd be in Heaven. His exams are difficult, but very interesting. Be prepared to study a LOT! I learned the most in his class than in all of my other sci classes combined. I'm even considering retaking it, b/c it was that amazing. But I sure can't wait for histology.
Marty has little human qualities but he does know his anatomy. All these people that say he is a "god" etc. are the little teeny boppers in the class that have hardly ventured away out from under there mother's wing. Basically he has no class.
Although the class was difficult, as it would be with any professor, I believe had it been taught by anyone else I wouldn't have learned as much as I have. Spranger is a great professor, very intelligent, therefore he knows what he is talking about! If you are an eager learner, take A&P with Spranger, I guarantee you will do great & love the class.
Good teacher and you will learn more than you think, but is extremely time consuming. Also, attendance and quizzes are taken randomly, which was annoying.
Great Prof. Clear presentations but tests are hard and much studying is needed. What is said in lecture is what is on the test. Overall, great prof and you will learn a lot.
Most students like to think he's the best professor because he has tattoos and rides a motorcycle. His lectures are crystal clear and detailed. His exams are unfair. I've never had an exam where every single question was a trick or misleading. The lab is impractical- you have to MEMORIZE every single structure that was ever named in the human body.
Very interesting, nice sense of humor - Very hard - tests are very tricky
Spranger knows his stuff and he WILL make you work for your grade. If you dont study, you wont do well and the exams are worded with intent to make you think and confuse you. To do well, know the powerpoints inside out, take notes during lectures, and rewrite those notes. Overall, know when you sign up that this class is gonna take extra work.
listen up all you scrubs who want to take this guys class... don't read the book and just listen to his lectures and right everything down that he says. If you do this and just review what you wrote down you will get no lower than a B. Unless your a dumbass which most of you are for talking**** about this guy, then you will do bad.
Marty Spranger. EGO-TRIP. It is blatently obvious that he is making the majority of the comments on this forum. This was made totally clear when all of the comments claming he's "sexy" started showing up. ANYONE (and everyone) who has taken one of his classes knows that him being called "sexy" couldn't be farther from the truth. Horrible professor
Very interesting prof-def. knows his stuff. Was emphatic about what he taught, which was refreshing. Its by far toughest class I've taken, but its worth it.I received a C, but I honestly could have worked a lot harder. Tests made you think. I did very well on last exam-Finally learned key to doing well-relisten over&over&over to lectures/rewritnotes!
for some reason i believe the guy who wrote the rating on april 23rd is indeed marty... but i was one of the students who ripped marty this semester for tough he was but i honestly take it all back hes the F"ING MAN!! yeah hes hard but trust me hes doing you a favor hes not benefit from being tough TRUST ME ITS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD....
Teacher very full of himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is entirely too Cocky and full of himself. I really did not understand is tests.I thought that maybe it was just me but after he chewed a guy up for a crinckled scantron, and bosted 2 the class about is funky "Nikes" I knew then he was a complete moron. However, I can honestly say "he" knows his stuff, but his method of delivery mediocre
Very clear lectures, but very difficult exams! Hard to listen to without being very put off by his ego.
What can you say about Spranger? He's actually one of the best lecturers of any professor I've ever had, but his tests are HARD. He really expects you to know your stuff, and to work your butt off. That being said, I'd recommend him, because his class is so interesting and you learn a ton. Just DO NOT expect an A, you'll have to work for it.
Extremely difficult tests. Lab is the worst part. Not being allowed extra time with lab models makes practicals very hard. Lab TA's are vague and grade awful...Learned a lot from spranger's lectures...All A's usually, struggling to stick with a C+/B-.
He is the best professor i ever had, he knows his material inside out. Yes his test's are very hard b/c he writes it him self and he make's you think & you need to know the material in great detail. After geting through his class you will be prepared for any class or program b/c you will learn how to study. record, listen, & rewrite lectures
OK..the problem with Marty is that he has absolutely no idea how to TEACH! Rather, he comes off as someone who is trying to show off his expansive knowledge regarding A&P. He has seem to already forgotten what it is like to be a student in the world of Power Point. Marty: slow down and perhaps apply some finesse into your lectures!
Very interesting class. Spranger really knows how to teach. It is a hard class, his tests are not easy.
He didn't like people sleeping or doing anything else in class. he also yelled at students who brought their kids to class which i thought was rude, it was a 5pm class in the summer. study, he likes to curve and give out extra points.
Hands down this is by far the best professor out there. No one can expalin physiology like Marty. He know's his stuff to well and his exams are written in a way to really make you think. This class is not a blowoff by any means, so think twice before you sign up. Re-listen to his lectures and you will see this is where the test material is from.
Underminds students a lot.
Great teacher! Makes sure he repeats himself MANY times so you get the point. But he's no easy A... Study hard and know your stuff! And listen to his advice on study habits. You need it for his class. Tests are VERY challenging, tricky almost.
I admit he knows his stuff - but he is NOT a good professor. First of all, he's arrogant, and his lectures sound like he is boasting about himself rather than actually LETTING us understand. And he ignores if people ask 'stupid' questions with a sarcastic answer - he keeps saying he cares about education - but he just wants to fail us all.
I don't know why other students would call Marty arrogant. He is quite the opposite. I consider him to be one of the most concerned and helpful teachers I have ever had... and he made class fun! Take his advice on how to study for his class and you will not only do well in the class, but find it to be very enjoyable! Marty knows his stuff!
Spranger may be arrogant but he has a right to be. He knows his stuff and is a very good prof. Print the slides, take extra notes, listen to his advice, and study after every lecture and you will get an A. It's not an easy A, but it is possible. His tests are hard, but thats the point of a test. Class is interesting, actually go to class!
He is the best professor ever! I wish all of the biology professors could teach like him! He knows his stuff and he makes his class very interesting. Attending class is mandatory if you want to do well. His exams are a bit challenging but you will be fine if you know how to study his material ...re-listening to his lectures!
the worse professor ever. thinks that he is the bomb and put all the other students down. very hard and his exams are very challenging. please don;t take his class. we were 250 students and only 13 got an A in his class. more than half the class failed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T TAKE HIM, unless you absolutely have to. He wants you to know the material like he does, inside/out. Very unrealistic! Out of 400 students maybe 10-15 got A's. The 1st class I've ever failed in my college career.
DO NOT.. I REPEAT.. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Marty is an all right guy, I just think he likes to see people fail his class. I personally rarely studied and still managed to get a high B+.
Prepare to learn with this guy. Exams are too difficult in my opinion. Tests more on whether you can take his exams rather than the actual material. One of the rare instances where you learn a lot and still get a pretty bad grade at the end.
His exams are way too difficult!
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Out of approx. 400 students about 200 failed. His EXAMS are on CONCEPT so you absolutely have to teach yourself. He knows his stuff, but he wants you to know it like he does, which is completely unfair. Need I say more!!!
ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun
Bio 3200 with him was no joke and the whole Digitalis fiasco was kinda funny. Got to learn a lot but ended up with a B after a tremendous amount of hardwork.
he is one of the worst professors I have ever had...such a hard teacher for what was supposed to be an average class
the exams were too hard, he expected you to know everything he lectured on, his notes are useless, listening to the lectures is the only way to get above a 50 in his class, if you don't eat, sleep, and breathe Bio, this is not the prof for you.
the worse professor ever. thinks that he is the bomb and put all the other students down. very hard and his exams are very challenging. please don;t take his class. we were 250 students and only 13 got an A in his class. more than half the class failed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He keeps making students feel so STUPID by his "sarcastic" remarks.
Honestly, Spranger's class was a TON of work. It was stressful, and his exams were difficult. However, I am sitting here studying for an upper level physiology course, WISHING I had the notes and lectures from Spranger, because he explained the basics better than anyone. I wish I payed a little more attention! He is frustrating, but worth it.
AWESOME PROF! I love attending class because you just learn so much. He is somewhat cocky but hey he knows his stuff so I respect that. If you want to learn some good biology, take him. He's tough but learning biology from him is well worth it! Trust me! His class DOES pay off!
This guy is ridiculous, yes he does know his stuff which is well appreciated i am sure he is the best bio prof at wsu. he assumes that all of his students are applying to med school or pharm school which isn't the case. he also assumes that every student in his class took 1510 w/ him which is not the case. average exam scores are 50% what a joke.
OVERALL MEAN. JUST THINKS THE WORLD OF HIMSELF. DOES NOT PROVIDE HANDOUTS AND JUST SIMPLY TALKS ALL OVER THE SUBJECT....
Professor spranger is extremely helpful in assisting students. He DOES NOT treat students like they are foolish ..his exams are very hard and you have to study hard from day 1...make notes after you listen to his lectures. You have to think and think hard when you take his exams as his questions are not straightforward.
Good Stuff
MDS is and awsome professor. He is always willing to help if you need it, and he keeps you interested in the material. His tests are hard but you appreciate it in the end, I feel like I can take on the world after passing his class!!!
This is the professor you want if you just don't want to blindly memorize things that you'll forget right after the test. With him you have to understand the material and if you do it'll stay with you. Spranger is an excellent and very helpful teacher and i would strongly recommend him.
Was willing to provide me advice regarding the MCAT, and Med school admission as a whole. He is very nice, and wants to challenge you. I got one of the highest marks in his class, and now I feel I understand the material inside out. Highly recommended.
Knows his stuff and wants you to know it... DON'T QUIT and ASK FOR HELP... GO TO SUPPLIMENTAL INSTRUCTION (<------ EXTREMELY helpful)
He doesn't want to see his students fail like some people think... he will give you the grade you deserve. He wants his students to succeed but he won't just give it to you... YOU HAVE TO EARN IT. Work hard, take advantage of the MANY, MANY opportunities he gives for help and STUDY, STUDY, STUDY.
He is a great professor, and really puts a lot of time/work into his lectures. He is a great lecturer. His exams are the hardest I've ever had, but if you know your stuff inside and out, you'll be fine. If you plan on devoting all of your free time to A&P, this class is for you. Highly recommended if you wish to actually LEARN.
difficult guy
Marty is a great guy if you study the way he tells you to day 1 of class you will get a good grade. Plus if you get an A he will write a letter of recommendation for you to apply to graduate school. overall great guy and great professor
This is my first class with Spranger, If you get an A or B in his class you really "get-it". His classes are extremely demanding, I am not exaggerating, but also not impossible. If you are going in to the medical field, this is the prof you want. He is a bit derisive, but it can be amusing.
Most difficult class I've ever taken in my life. If your life does not revolve around biology, you will not pass. A great majority of the class failed.
He takes his teaching, on and off the lecturn, seriously. What a real man, a stunning specimen of a totally rocking human.
Don't take this class unless your going into nursing, pre-med, or like torture. I worked so hard for a c. I guarantee I know more than anyone who got an A from a different prof. I probably won't get into my program b/c i can't figure out how to do good on his tests. He's a good teacher though.
Take Spranger if you want to learn. If you don't learn it inside and out, you'll fail. He honestly just wants his students to know the material as well as he does and no one should complain-- you're PAYING for this class to LEARN! I'm getting a C in the class but I agree with other people.I know more than some1 who got an A with an easy prof
Marty really knows his stuff and if you expect to pass, you'll have to known it too. Simple memmorization will not suffice, Marty expects comprehension and critical thinking. Exams are difficult but not impossible if you prepare yourself.
Level of difficulty and exam material is beyond the introductory level. You will need to devote your semester to studying for this class and maybe a LA class.
Marty makes you LEARN, which is what you're supposed to do in college anyway. He knows his stuff, makes lectures engaging, and exams are difficult but if you do well, it means that you actually understand the material. Very down-to-earth and uses examples to illustrate a point. Slides are helpful, attendance is a must for an A or B. He's hot, too!
You know how when you study for an exam, you kind of forget the details a few days later? Not in here. You learn and it sticks. Tough course, live and breathe it, but I highly recommend this professor. He's so motivated and inspiring. This is the first class I actually enjoy going to lecture for. Thank you Marty Spranger!!
Bottom Line: Best Professor in WSU...True story!!!
Very demanding class, but very helpful and every effort will pay off. I am taking another science class with this class and am getting A's in both, so it is possible. Re-listen to his lectures and go to class, he can give extra credit that helps alot!
he only acts nice but he is sooo hard. i took so many bio class and passed it with A but his class its like a dream to get a C very hard. nothing comes from a book. you will only do good if u r extremely smart or a bio major or if you from that profession. trust me. don't get fooled by the nice comments you see here its mostly him commenting.
Marty is a great professot. He knows his stuff. Trust me you will come out of this class learning a lot whether you get a good grade or not thats the truth! The thing is you have to learn how to take his test, its not that you dont know anything, the fact is you have to learn how to think like him. Yes his test are hard but they make you think!
Most of the negative comments are trash...come from the people that have bad study habits. I took his class with 3 other sciences including one honors class...Marty Spranger, the "Patron of Challenge" at Wayne State!!
Be ready to give up your life when you take this class. It takes 3-5 hours to write one lecture and to understand it. You have to work extremely hard for the grade. Hes smart but very rude. He isn't helpful when you go to him for help either. Just work extremely hard in this class and you can maybe get an A-.
Marty is a GOD amount men. Marty is the ANSWER to any of you who really want to know what college is all about and really what it means to be successful. To all the people that are bashing him, I GUARANTEE you will fail life because you have spend countless hours rating how "bad" he is rather than actually listening to your lectures! Marty=Success!
Marty is not one of the best teachers at WSU, he is the best teacher at WSU. His lectures are amazing and yes you do have to work hard for your grade since that is what college is supposed to be all about. I'm a bio major and I have not learned as much from taking so many bio classes as to how much Marty taught me in a semester. The best class!
This class isn't as difficult as people make it out to be because Marty does a great job at teaching and helping his students actually understand biology. If students would simply go over the lecture after each class and study once more at the end of each week the class would be a breeze and they would remember and understand everything.
There is no doubt that you will bust your ass in this class. This class brings everything you learned in your major all together as a whole. You'll relisten to lectures, you'll read your textbook, you'll go to office hours, and you'll definitely apply yourself. Professor Spranger will challenge your determination and prepare you for your future!!
Marty is by far the best prof I've ever had, EVER! He truely has a passion for what he teaches & that causes u to get excited learn. He also makes learning fun, esp. since this class is tough. Read the chps in the text prior to lec. then listen to the recordings. The key is to understand the concepts. You want to learn physio? Take Prof. Spranger!
A very fair examiner; students' responsibilities were made clear from day one. He'll help you if you need him to and curves every test, but he won't give you a grade you haven't worked for. Seems arrogant at times, but really loves his job and the subject and it shows. A great professor if you like the subject and really want to learn.
Marty Spranger is one of the best professors I've ever had if not the best. He is extremely knowledgeable about the material and makes it very clear on what you need to know. He is difficult and his tests really make you think but if you know the material and put in the time an A is attainable. You will learn more than any other class!
Spranger is a great professor and really knows his material. Intimidating, but very understanding and willing to help. Must study and imperative to re-listen to his lectures. Very enthusiastic about physiology, but challenging exams. Learned a great deal from Spranger. Very helpful for PCAT/MCAT. But be prepared to study and work hard from day one.
Very challenging. Tests are quite difficult. Need to study to do well in this class. Excellent professor.
Marty Spranger will give you the opportunity of challenge. He is a great teacher who teaches a hard course. It is intensive course in general, Marty makes sure you walk out with the fundamentals into a health science program. He is knowledgeable, and responsible. Start before the course reviewing the book, don't underestimate Exam 1.
This isn't an easy class, but I guess Spranger doesn't make it any easier, no study guides, when people are mad on his test, he provides excuses for his questions which are so lame..so pple watch out..wonder why all negative ratings are flagged.
This class was AMAZING, and Marty made this class worth the while. If your ready to think and have an interest in learning, this class is for you. If you just want an easy A and don't want to put in any effort, don't take this class. Re-listen to his lectures. He's a great professor, and don't be weary about approaching him with any questions.
Yes this class was challenging. However, I learned a lot!!! & that is the most important thing! Marty is a great lecturer & genuinely cares about his students success. He is very approachable & helpful. He is also very quick to respond to e-mails which is always plus. Be ready to work hard..you will learn more than you can imagine!!
The subject is hard be Prof Spranger made it so easy to understand, he is one of the best profs I have had!
best class at wayne state....i enjoyed going to class every monday and wed...spranger is the best prof..taught me everything i know and as long as you put the time into the class you will get a good grade!
This is my way of thanking this wonderful prof. for motivaing me to see a whole different side of science that I never appreciated at all. Aside from that, Marty taught me the best way for studying for anything and be at least 99% sure that I know almost everything that's going to be on the exam before the exam.Thank you.
If you want to learn a lot this is the teacher you want. He will challenge your concept of what it takes to get an A. Its not the amount of time you spend studying, its how you spend the time you have. Get an A or have fun outside of school, take your pick. If your in a pre-professional program act like it. If its not for you try something else.
He's a tough teacher, but if you're taking him you're probably allied health so get used to it. Put in the time and you'll do fine.
had him for biology..i eneded up dropping took another teacher and got a B+.. he is very hard! make sure u study to understand the information in depth!
Although Spranger is an amazing lecturer, I found myself feeling a bit depressed after his exams. Didn't have a book, but listened to his lectures twice, wrote them out, lots of work for a B+ I felt that some material wasn't asked in the way he taught it, so maybe his exams weren't FRESH. Standard 10% of students got As, which is bad for an electiv
I studied my butt off and I, as well as 183 other students, failed to pass. His questions are on the tiniest details and students will fight with him that he didnt cover exam questions. (Though, sure enough, it was mentioned in one quick sentence) He's tough with the details. Be warned! You should only take this class at WSU if you are pre-med!
This class is challenging, you really have to work at it EVERY day for that A, and it's that way for a reason. The majority of people taking this class are going in the medical profession. This class is awesome preparation for future classes, as well as standardized exams. You will feel so accomplished after taking his class. Best class I've had.
Best professor I've ever had! People on here say he's impossible but he's not at all. They're just lazy. He'll push you to your full potential and you'll become such a better student because of him. He changed so much about my outlook on education. I would take his classes over and over again if I could. He makes it so interesting!
I would like to thank Prof Spranger for making me a better student. His exams are very hard but if you study and ask for help, you should at least pass his exams. If you live and breathe anatomy and physiology, then you'll excel in his class. Just re-writing the lectures is not enough, you have to understand it. I enjoyed his lectures. Thanks again
very good teacher!!!! people start study....in his class you need to study!but if you have results- you will appreciate that...
great class
Can be a jerk sometimes but you will learn.Be ready to WORK.Never take notes while in class bc you need to pay attention. You should just listen in class and try to understand what is going on, then re-listen to the lecture whether you go to class or not. You really need to learn and not memorize bc he makes you apply knowledge, not regurgitate.
Took him last semester and honestly, I busted my ass for this class and had no life the whole semester. I got a B-.. His tests are HARD but do-able. He is very smart. he knows a lot and he wants to prepare you for the real world. Just be ready to work and you will do well. He's the best prof I've ever had.
very difficult and vague.
Marty was very enthusiastic about Anatomy and Physiology, and he was entertaining during lecture. The exams were killer. Each question was very tricky. He knows his class is difficult and is proud of it. Do NOT take more than two other classes along with this one. The workload is very overwhelming and it covers a ton of information.
This man's ego is THROUGH THE ROOF! And that's no exaggeration. I'd never recommend such a self-absorbed teacher SO full of himself and I regret ever taking his class even though I got a B. It was one of the hardest classes I ever took and I swear Spranger talks faster than 10 teenage girls put together! Re-listen to his lectures VERY intensely.
Marty has the unique ability to get information to you. You will know the information through and through, go into the exam feeling like you're so ready that you can TEACH the material, afterwards just to be made a fool of. He teaches well, very well. His exams however are far from fair.
People state "live and breathe" Anatomy and you can pass - however, there ARE full-time students that cannot 'live and breath' one class. Another said how exam questions are 30% taken from 'old exams' however, I never got the advantage of having an old exam to study. MDS doesn't write his own exams, which are too difficult for an into A&P course.
took A&P with him, he is extremely hard! went to lecture everyday, re-listened to the lecture, & read the book!! still had to drop the class! I would recommend taking another teacher (which I doubt because he's the only one who teaches it) or take it at another school!
Sucks for a prof. Knows his stuff but expects too much from his students.
This isn't an easy class, but I guess Spranger doesn't make it any easier, when people are mad about his tests, he provides excuses for his questions which are so lame..so pple watch out..wonder why all negative ratings are flagged.
Spranger is not an easy prof, but that's the point. He weeds out the students that aren't going to cut it in the health field because they don't try hard enough. If you actually study and take the class seriously you can easily get a B or better. It's nice to see a prof that actually challenges his students and demands nothing but the very best.
Not evyeryone is TYRING TO GET INTO THE MEDICAL FIELD.for biology majors, he sure has a funny way of screwing up people's GPA, scholarships and passion for graduating in a DIFFERENT field. He is counterproductive as a 'professor'. His job is not to weed out anyone... it is to TEACH.
Spranger is not challenging-the MATERIAL in the classes he teaches is challenging. He is far from fair on his exams- only set out to trick you or test your ability to pass his tests (not on if you studied, and understood the material). Only students who had MORE sci PREREQS prior to taking a&p will undermine these points and claim spranger is good
to demonstrate how irrational he is: in lec he stated how people jumping from 80pts on Exam 3 up to 150 pts on Exam 4 "didn't impress" him. It's NOT about impressing him, although that is how he views his students. it's one big competition to him. Student's who really enjoy the class/prof HAD the old exams although NEVER admit it. BIASED PROFESSOR
I have had a difficult time in this class, but it is the material not the professor. He can be rude but his efforts are directed at getting people to strive to do their best. I learned more in this class than any other class at Wayne.
the material is hard. and dedicated student can learn it. marty makes it simple and clear. BUT, the exams are prepared for Grad Students. Marty tries to prep the class for grad school and MCAT testing, which makes him out of line.
Don't let spranger scare you, hes just a wanna be doctor who tries his hardest to fail premeds. Get old exams and ace this clown.
he quit medical school after one year and never returned. couldn't cut it and is now bitter about it. he doesn't have the finesse like most scholars becaus he was a pipefitter and still acts like a blue-collar fighter.
he can be very rude to students and he purposely tries to trick you on his exams. some people think that helps you become a better student, i think it just makes it harder to pass the class, which makes many have to retake it and pay WSU TWICE. i had to put a lot of studying time in order to pass. Pls bring in a new prof!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"...am I beating a dead dog here, talking about the histology too much?" YES, Marty, you are. Spranger goes on & on & ON about intrinsic details of physiology, because he finds it "gorgeous" Then he flies over basic fundamentals of A&P too quickly. This is why his exams are hard to pass. A&P is NOT Histology. POOR professor. poor.
you CAN get an A (get old exams). students continually prove how easy it is to get an A because they have the old exams to study the questions. Sprager is aware of this, but said it doesn't impress him. how contradictory, since he continually points out the A students during lectures- which is meaningless when they are chaeting!
The comment posted below said students are "idiots", then bragged how "easy the course was" [READY FOR THIS?] BECAUSE HE HAD OLD EXAMS TO STUDY FROM all semester!!! Just goes to prove: having old exams helps A students GET those A's and then it leaves Srpagner to knock down the remaining students who get Bs or Cs. WHAT A CLOWN/JOKE!
VERY good teacher, tests are far from fair. This isn't an easy class, but I Spranger doesn't make it any easier, when people are mad about his tests, he provides excuses for his questions, which are so lame..so pple watch out..wonder why all negative ratings are flagged.
Learning A&P is a process- it doesn't come all at once. Study every day, persevere, ask questions, dissuss with classmates and seek help, right away. The passion for this course comes from YOU, not any professor. You either love it or hate it. Spranger may have motivated 20 students, but his exams did NOT test my knowledge. He is very arbitrary.
Be ready to give up your life when you take this class. It takes 5-7 hours to write one lecture and then, you have to go back and study it to understand it. Hes smart but very rude. He isn't helpful when you go to him for help either, unless you're getting an A.
Lectures are clear and relevant, but exams are HARD. If you don't know EVERYTHING you will not pass. However, you don't need old exams if you're willing to actually study: lab helps your grade a lot and he uses major curves. I pulled off an A without old exams, so it can be done! He's resigned now anyway so good luck with the new prof!
Good teacher, but very rude, knows his material very well, but not student oriented at all. His tests are not fair at all.
I thought if I worked really hard, I'd do well, but I ended up with a B-. Like most Bio majors, I've never gotten a B- in my life. What's worse: your other classes get screwed because of this class. There's a difference between challenging students and failing them for fun to prove his superiority. So, I've reason to say he's also a bad human.
Best AnP professor out there. Of course he's hard but if you really want to learn the info take him. Have had higher level bio classes and really haven't had to study cause of this man and how much I learned in his classes. Course I Aced 2870 and 3200, it can be done.
best professor!!
Arrogant, self-absorbed, show off. need I say more? I got an A in the course, I only got As in science courses. MDS isn't hard... his tests are hard. He is ridiculous and writes his tests that trick you. Reread each question very very carefully - then maybe, you'll see the hidden tricks and you can easily get an A
horrible, way to hard
thank god WSU got rid of spranger. I didn't take this course to find a professor that taugh me "how to learn". I got there all on my own. He is too cocky and tests are equivalent to the MCAT, which is a joke for a 2000 level course.
Worse professor in WSU so arrogant. seeing so much rating should tell you how something. i hated his class. he makes the exam soooo hard unless you are a genius you wont do as good. im sooo glad he is gone. now i can take this course over again.
Marty knows his stuff very very well. He is a great professor but his exams are EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HARDDDDDDDDDDDDD. i worked my butt off and didnt get my A. He doesnt test us to see if we know our stuff, he tests to see if we are genius or something.
Honestly, he's not that bad. An incredible lecturer and so enthusiastic about the subject matter. Attend every class and just listen, dont even try to take notes, just absorb it all. Go home and listen to his lecture while taking notes. Time consuming, yes. Keep up with this and youll get an A. This class prepares you for future health-care programs
This man is impossible, he thinks way to highly of himself and reminds you about it all the time.
I'm not sure why so many people are complaining about Marty. Are his exams tricky? Yes. But he is a wonderful professor and one of the best professors I have ever had. I did not get an A but I learned a lot from taking his class.
I miss Marty's lectures :( His exams are hard, but not impossible. Sheesh! And he's very entertaining lecturer.
do not take him!!!!! he is very clear however does not seem to care if you pass or fail . Talk to him be prepared to get a tutor you live breath this class . SO take him if this is the last class available and need if not avoid him . Seriously his tests are very difficult to follow Usually people take this 2 to 3 times listen take notes goodluck
Best professor I've ever had. Enough said.
I am one of the many people who withdrew from Spranger's class, but the problem was me not him. After retaking this class with a different prof, I must say Spranger is a BETTER instructor than anyone else will ever be. Although he is challenging, you actually learn from his teaching style which prepares you for future advanced a&p courses.
Continuation from previous post: Everyone loves complaining about how horrible of a person he is, but they never mention the good things about him compared other "easier" profs. 1. He gives away 5o free attendance pts 2. He automatically drops the lowest exam score 3. Whenever he does curve an exam, he curves it by 20-25 pts.
He's not bad.. only problem is his lectures consist of him thinking out loud- he talks real fast, in low terminology and in a disorganized manner but other than that you learn a lot in his class
Unless you plan on studying for hours on end or this is your only class, I wouldn't take this guy. Most of the class dropped it, and the ones that didn't were the Indian kids that spend 19 hours a day reading. It's not really worth it.
I like him.. Yes he is very hard and his class requires a lot of studying, but it is manageable to get an A and definitely possible to get a B. He really does love what he's teaching. Plus I think he's pretty good looking lol
unless your a doctor dont take this class, 55 percent of the people fail his class, he talks so fast, he knows what hes talking about but good luck getting an A
As a former student of Marty's and a current Nursing student at WSU, I am grateful that I had him as a prof. for 2870. Yes, the class was hard, but I learned so much and everything about that class has made my nursing classes much easier. If he gave away As, I would have to relearn everything again later. Now I actually know and remember my A&P.
do not take this professor. the average for the last exam was 45%. i have a 3.7 GPA and I'll be lucky if i get a C in his class. it's insane, you're responsible for every word he says. go ahead and take this class if you want to lower your GPA.
I am so grateful to have taken Spranger's A&P course. Trust me, he really prepares you for grad school and he provides you with a solid knowledge base for other classes you will encounter later on. And grad school is harder than Spranger's A&P so suck it up and study and be grateful for his courses. He's a great prof.
Take someone else if possible.
Bought my GPA down. A's in all my other classes. Don't take him.
Professor Spranger is very polite, he let me look at the keys for prior exams even though it was too late. Always brings food to class. Knows what he's talking about. You have to study hard for his class if you want an A, which is only fair.
keeps adding notes to his slides when he lectures, have to relisten to lectures which consumes a ridiculous amount of time, tricky exam questions, take someone else
Spranger knows what he's talking about but his exams are very hard and he expects you to read the book and listen to his lecture through blackboard (Which is time consuming).
Not nearly as hard as everyone says he is. His tests are a little hard, but he puts a nice curve on it. Also, he gave tons of points for attendence and extra credit for it. I actually thought it wasnt very hard to get an A. Just listen to the lectures, and take notes on everything he says, then now everything he said. I never opened my book.
Must re-listen to lectures and write everything he said in class, which took me around 5 hours per lecture. And MEMORIZE and UNDERSTAND all! I ended up with B+, there was 13 extra credit points for attendance. Overall, he's good professor but hard class.
His exams are hard, however it is over everything he talked about n class. He curves and gives extra credit points. I finished w/ over 100% in class. I took Org. Chem w/lab, human phys. calc.III. I also work 15 hours a week and volunteer 4 hours a week. if you get into medical school you will have 4-5 classes all being taught like this way.
Physio has by far been the most difficult, yet most rewarding class I've taken at WSU. People call Spranger "hard" but that is only because he expects a great deal out of you. I truly believe this is because he is trying to prepare his students for a future in the medical field. Anyone can do well in his class, you just have to work VERY hard.
Brutal class but I learned a lot. I only grasped 30% of lectures; needed to listen to recordings 2-3 times. Some of his points were confusing, but he was good at clarifying things thru email. Take the class if you want to test yourself. I liked the class, but would have jumped off a building w/ 4 profs like him.
You'll need to study, relisten to his lectures, dictate his lectures. He's hard, and will not correct for errors in his exams. But once you go through this class you'll miss him because at least his lectures are interesting and clear and you always know what you're suppose to know and if you study it you'll actually learn it.
The comments below are very misleading. Meaning if you have a 3.7 GPA and you took his class and his class retarded your GPA, then your GPA was not a true representation of yourself to begin with. This guy is a great teacher, im taking this class with Orgo 1 and I scored a 105% on his second exam. Hes a great prof and a must for graduate school...
Marty is an excellent and demanding professor. His job is to make sure you understand the material inside and out and he expects that everyone puts in the necessary effort. THE material itself wasnt difficult, its the fact that there is so much material that you are expected to know inside and out. Overall I recommend him, except if your lazy.
His exams are super challenging, and so hard with the lab! He can be intimidating but teaches well. You really need to give this class your all, and that is not easy. I learned study techniques for grad school. He is not an easy A or even an easy B. If you have a life and a bunch of other classes and study hard for his exams, you will get a C.
Hands down one of the toughest classes anyone would ever take. The only way to study is to relisten to his lectures and take jesus notes. If you have a life, you will not pass this class with the grade your hoping for.
the lab for this class is absolute garbage. this is not a reflection of marty but when you combine his hard class with the TA that know nothing and demand everything the class is hard. Marty is an awesome teacher study hard..dont forget lab....its the biggest garbage at WSU. Actually shame on WSU for this garbage excuse for lab
Spranger is hard, no doubt about that. But as I've continued with my studies and working in health care, a lot of what he taught and how he taught it stuck very well. My advice: Partner with someone in the class and alternate transcription of EVERY lecture and then review until you feel you can teach it to someone else.
Took this course with a 20 credit semester & earned a B. His exams are difficult but he curves fairly. A decent grade in the class requires LOTS of studying & dedication to the course. You have to want it. Spranger really knows his stuff & lectures were interesting!! Listen to his advice at the beginning of the course. He has my recommendation.
Listen to him day 1. If you follow what he says you will have no life but come out a live in the class. Best prof ever had because the material sticks. Attend every lecture, listen to the recording then make your own notes. If you dont i guarantee you wont get any higher that a C. Be prepared for lab too a lot of memorizing. overall best class.
this professor is way too hard and cocky. stay away from him. unless you take the course by itself, you will not pass.
Spranger is the best professor at wayne. he is very down to earth and knows what he is talking about. an A is not that easy but very possible if you do study for it hard enough
Go to class and study what he tells you. It's not that hard.
Hundreds of people claim to be pre-med/pharm/etc only a few get into the program. If your complaint is that Prof Sprangers class is "hard" then you're likely to be the majority who won't get into your program. People look for the easy way out, well take the MCAT/PCAT etc & see where that leads you. If you can't get an A here you'll never survive!
I had him for bio 3200 and bio 5680, the guy knows his stuff like no one else. talks very fast and spews a ton of detail and knowledge. go to class, listen and take notes. go home, study recordings and notes also read textbook. very hard exam questions but the best prof at wsu without question! highly recommended! if hes to hard, bye bye med school
Pointlessly difficult exams. You can know the info inside and out and still fail the exam. His exam style is to trick. His questions are like riddles and so are the answers. Better than 50% of the class fails every exam, so he needs to add a heavy curve. That says a LOT more about the instructor than the prof. Take someone else. He's dreadful!
This was far and away the best class I have taken at Wayne State and Spranger is probably the best professor I have had. He is a very tough and demanding professor, and it's nice to have someone who is willing to challenge his students and who loves the material at the same time. If you want an easy A don't take him but if you want to learn then do
Super difficult. Takes up ALL the available time you have. He is arrogant and rude. I was miserable, but ended with a disappointing A-. If there is any other option, you'd do well to choose it.
You will work harder/longer for this than any class youve had. Your book is worthless as he goes on long tangents that aren't covered in the book. Talks so much & gets so behind that he missed GI, urinary and reproductive, if you want to learn it, you have to continue coming to lectures for weeks after class ended. Outrageous & unprofessional
This was the hardest but best class I have ever had in my entire college career.
Best Biology Professor I've Ever Had! He truly knows the material well and can clearly explain it to the class. The material itself is challenging and so is the class, but he truly gave us every opportunity to get an A. My advice is take him if you want to master the information and are willing to put in a lot of time and effort for this class.
lets be real man. this is definitely the hardest class ive had at wayne state. Did i learn much? no. Its hard to learn when you pretty much just have to cram/regurgitate everything this guy says.this is NOT how you study in medical school because if you did, you wouldnt learn a dang thing.
Yeah it's a lot of work. Yeah it's a lot of material. Yeah he knows his stuff. The problem is the exams. They're what he thinks is like med school. Nobody in med school writes in double negatives and with frequent grammar errors. 1/2 the exam is spent interpreting questions & answers into adult English. Take him and you'll be very sorry. Guaranteed
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you don't want to miss class. The lectures are recorded, but the information is dense, so you want to listen to it more than once.
Good experience. It's important to pay attention, attend every class, and prepare for the exams. Was able to drop lowest exam (couldn't be the final). Marty's presentations and slides were very helpful and clear, didn't have to reference the book much. Recommend studying with another person or small group to really learn the material. Recommend
I took Marty's class in 2012; it changed my life beyond knowledge of A&P. The dude teaches you how to work, how to want. It's not about the grades - it's about the knowledge. As for me, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have transferred to UofM and kept a 4.0. As he says, "Those who get in an A in my class will go on to kick ass." - Zain
WORST teacher EVER!!!! He grades as if we are all Med students, for a PreR this was by far the hardest, worst class tough by the worst teacher at Wayne! If you have the option to take a different professor, do so! His exams are dreadful!!! I had to withdraw his class! Waste Of Money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was by far the best class I have ever had. Marty teaches you how to think and work for the grade. Everyone complaining simply did not put in the work. The only class I have had thus far that I can say I actually learned. 8 hours a lecture spent learning the material easy. I had 2 other classes besides his and worked 20+ hours a week as well..
Before taking the class I was warned not to by plenty of people because he was "extremely hard". After taking the class I'm glad I didn't listen. Great teacher, incredible depth of knowledge, and makes you work for your grade. He lets you know early if you want an A, you're gonna have to work your ass off. Too bad he's not at WSU anymore.
Perhaps the positive comments are by students that either took the class before or have a lot of background in bio, but if you are a typical student avoid at all cost this prof. Lectures are confusing, and even more so the exam. I strongly suggest that he changes his profession, it is definitely not for him. Got a good grade, but NOT because of him
Rude.
Terrible experience. First class I didn't pass. Tests are written for students to fail (the class averages on all of them were between 50-70%.
A student in my class dropped out of U of M, who also took a physiology class that wouldn't transfer to WSU. This student could not believe how much harder the classtests were at WSU. You need to study everyday to pass this class. It's already a tough class, so be prepared for Spranger exams to be really tough. As hard as he is, I retained a lot.
Dr. Spranger is the best professor I've had. You can tell he loves what he does. The exams were ridiculously difficult and the amount of content for one exam is crazy. But I truly feel grateful that Marty kicked my ass and made me work extra hard. Go to his office hours, he will ALWAYS help clarify things, no matter how many questions you have.
If you want to actually learn something and maybe do well on Mcat or Pcat, take him. Honestly the best Bio lecturer I've had at WSU and I have had many! Is he tough? YES, is it an easy A, NO. You will have to study, come to class, and ask questions. Don't talk in class unless you're dying; you will regret it. He gives extra credit also :)
He loves what he does, and he is available to help the students.
Spranger is one of the best professors i've ever had. He explains the material extremely well and is always available to students. You have to work hard to get the grade that you want but it will pay off in the end. Studying for the MCAT, i find myself better able to remember and understand the material learned in his class than any other class.
Do NOT take him in the summer. He tries to cram everything in and he is extremely detailed. Every question is a paragraph so you barely have time to finish the exam (even with 90 minutes). His exams are TOUGH and he admits it. Only the people with old exams do well, which is not very many. AVOID HE IS AWFUL.
Explains everything in detail and puts all concepts on the exams. Exams are VERY HARD and listening to the lectures again on Echo Center was the only way to understand the material. Never touch my textbook, but took notes after every lecture was crucial for me. Tough class but was well taught
This class is very sink-or-swim. Marty demands excellence and writes his own test questions to challenge even the upper 10% of students. Expect to work extremely hard for a B.
The upside to Marty is that he is very intelligent and conveys the information well. His exams are very difficult, but if you spend the hours studying it shouldn't be too bad, and it really helps in actually getting you to retain the information. The downside is his abrasive, mightier-than-thou personality. You can still get along with him tho.
Exams are pretty hard because so many multiple questions are worded like "which statement is true?" so one question ends up being, essentially, a series of 4 true/false questions in 1. If you're more dedicated than average you'll learn a lot! If you're already taking a full load, don't expect an A. Marty's personality and his class are "tough."
Marty is a tough grader with tests that can be difficult, but for good reason. He wants his students to be successful in upper level biology classes. Anything worth doing takes effort. This class prepares you for ever other science class on campus. It will pay off
Professor Spranger is truly inspirational and WILL set you up to do very well in any subsequent science courses. If you go to class, pay close attention, and give his lectures a re-listen, you will do very well and have a rewarding experience. I am currently a pharmacy student (big thanks to him) and am very in tune with anatomy and physiology.
Professor Spranger is very organized. All of his PowerPoints are provided before class, and his lectures are voice recorded during class. Therefore, youre able to take notes on his recordings after class. If you simply understand his discussions, you will do well in his class.
Dr. Spranger is incredible! He lecture's so effortlessly and well, it motivated me to work harder than any other professor has. His class is challenging, so you must push yourself to ace the class. He offers the best help and is extremely down to earth. If you want to actually learn and get amazing PCAT/MCAT prep theres no one better than him!!
Best professor ever! His tests are not easy and are a choose the best answer, rather than a choose the right answer, so you do have to work hard for it. He is extremely fair and he has a straight up passion for helping turn students grades around. He knows the material front to back, left to right, ask him anything! Don't take it with anyone else.
Going into this class people told me his class was impossible to pass and he wasn't nice but that is COMPLETELY WRONG. Spranger was an amazing teacher and he gave you all the tools to do well in his class, he cares about his students doing well and is a really great teacher. If you apply yourself and take this class seriously you will do just fine
Dr. Spranger is one of the most intelligent and favorite professors I have had yet. He provides countless office hours, easy participation points, extra credit, and reposts his lectures. This class takes work, like any class at MSU, but if you show up, listen to the lectures, and WATCH THE STUDY SKILL VIDEO, he will make sure you get a 4.0.
Listening to lectures after class, working the study skills process he talks about, and getting all the easy tophat points is a sure way to do well. His tests are no joke- a lot of detail and subtle things that are easy to make mistakes on. Also, for study skills/questions/academic guidance, there is no better professor to approach. Be proactive.
Good luck.
Take anyone else. He makes his exams hard for no reason- you can know the material inside and out, but his exams are a guessing game. Good luck.
Guaranteed, follow his study skills and read in between the lines, you will dominate this class. it is easy to fail it too because you need to understand it before you can answer his questions. If you want to know and master physiology, He is the man for you.
There are tons of information in the realm of this class, but anything he says in class is what will ONLY be on the exam. Put his lectures in your own words. Only way to get an A and survive. Hone down and let him look at your notes if need be. Tough class but you retain a lot of information. Good luck!
Definitely a lot harder to take at WSU then MSU. He challenges WSU much more, and you'll know that with his exam drop policy between the two schools. Even though he is a lot harder on WSU students than MSU students, he is the best professor for BIO 3200 at WSU. Take your chances with him over any other Human Physiology professor at WSU.
If you aren't Pre-Pharm/Med, this class is a rough experience at best. His 'study skills' are great, for those who have 4-5 hours to give to writing, rewriting, summarizing- per lecture. Great teacher who cares, but is out of touch with realistic expectations. The exam avg. stayed in high 60% range for my class, for just over 110 people. Be ready.
He has the mindset that he is better than you. Exams are extremely difficult, you can study for entire days for a week and get a straight B. incorrect info on prerecorded lectures and gives the correct info to handful of students instead of the entire class who is learning incorrect info. scared to email him bc puts students on blast publicly.
Dr. Spranger's class was hands down the most difficult class I've taken thus far. His exams are borderline impossible, and even though I'll admit his pre-recorded lectures are good, they're riddled with errors and his test questions are absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention his rude demeanor and big ego, can't even politely ask for anything. RUN!!!
Do not, i repeat, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM! He was nothing but a terrible teacher, who unfairly grades and doesn't go over test questions when asked to later. Please im begging u take this class with anyone else, save yourself now while you can. If I could go back in time and not waste thousands of $ on this course before i dropped, i would.
One of the worst professors for Bio 3200. He has the worst ego, is rude to the students, and exams are almost impossible to do well on. His pre-recorded lectures are good but they do have errors and you need to memorize every single word he says to do well on his exams. This is a tough class so please take it with a better professor.
Potentially doable if you give it your undivided attention with no other classes or responsibilities going on. Other than that, this class is nearly impossible. He's extremely difficult and arrogant. No E.C. or curves, and if you get even 1 point E.C. you're lucky. Save your sanity and don't take him.
Is this a difficult course but worth it? Yes. Dr. Spranger was the best professor I have ever had. If you want to learn human phys, he is your best bet. He makes hard topics enjoyable and understandable. He will test your knowledge and pushes you to master this class, as any professor should. This class will prep you for med/PT/PA/etc more than any
Take the negative reviews for what u will, but know that this class is worth it. BIO3200 is not easy. Med or other prof schools are not easy. This is a hard course, no doubt, but u will not regret taking this course. Put in the time. U will be rewarded. Regarding past reviews, he gave more EC/curve than expected/deserved. An A is possible with work
This class is tough as is any other BIO 3200 course you will take. However, Dr. Spranger does an amazing job of focusing solely on applicable content that will heavily prepare you for any career in health care. I learned more from this course than any class i've had in my life. Studying was enjoyable and lectures were amazing. Take this class!!!!!
Dr. Spranger is genuinely a good and understanding professor. He teaches and explains concepts very well, perhaps one of the best bio professors I've had so far. The exams are difficult, you must study and you must work hard for it. This class also tests your discipline, which is a good trait to develop.
Dont listen to the negative reviews about Dr. Spranger. He is an awesome human phys teacher, his lectures were awesome and packed with great information. People who leave negative reviews just arent willing to put in the work. His exams are challenging, but extremely fair if you actually study the material. He gave a very generous curve too!
Dr. Spranger is definitely a difficult professor, but his study tips are pure gold. He really is teaching you how to study properly for grad school - which I can say not only on my own authority but from a previous student of his as well who is pursuing his Master's. You have to work for it to be sure, but he is definitely worth it.
Don't listen to the negative reviews. This class is 100% worth it. Just be prepared to work hard for your grade and be disciplined in your studies. Dr. Sprangers class isnt easy but neither will med school be. He does an excellent job in preparing you for the future by encouraging you to work hard and understand the material. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
This class won't be easy no matter who you take it with. Dr. Spranger is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes even the most boring / difficult material interesting and easy to understand. He makes you work very hard for your grade, but if you put the work in, an A in this class is very possible, despite what other ratings say.
Majority of the class had a c or lower. If u want to be able to email ur prof. w/out sharing it with the whole class, this isnt the prof. for you he may share them in the facebook group students are in. Also, doesnt matter if it is a national holiday. he will assign quizzes. May or may not answer your questions prof LOVES to flex he is in charge.
Spranger motivates you to work hard and gives you the tools you need to succeed, but proceed with caution. He isnt exactly a sweetheart. Dont expect prompt or helpful email responses, and be careful with the way you write to him because he can get snappy. Take him if youre ready for a challenge. He teaches well, buts its no easy A.
He is very smart and knows what he is doing. His exams are very hard and specific to what was mentioned in the lecture. There are quizzes on every chapter to keep you on track. If you are having problems with concepts, make sure to contact him via email or in lectures. You have to work very hard if you want A. HARDEST BIO CLASS THAT I HAVE TAKEN!!!
Probably the best professor I've had in a while here at Wayne State. He definitely pushes you to do your best. Don't listen to the bad reviews he curved almost every test and gave extra credit when he finds his questions tough. He supplies everything you need to do great in the course. For example he has a whole module on how you should study.
Heres the tea. Spranger is a difficult Professor. You will have to dedicate hours on hours for his class alone. Pop quizzes were assigned throughout the summer semester including one on the Fourth of July. Condescending when responding to e-mails and makes you wish you wouldnt have asked a question.I wouldnt take it again, couldnt pay me enough
Marty Spranger is the BEST.. I'm in medical school now and I'm miles ahead of my classmates. DO NOT listen to the sore losers below who did poorly in his class and want to blame him for it. If you put in the work, an A is easily attainable. He is happy to answer Qs if they are intelligent and he can tell that you study. If not, good luck.
If you are looking for an easy A, this class is not. I can promise you will leave as an expert in human physiology.
This professor is definitely very different from the ones Ive had before. I respect him greatly. He pushes all of his students to do their absolute best and if you show him that you are putting in 100% in this class he will reward you for it, but if you are putting in any less than that he will not. Very hard on you but it is a good challenge.
Probably one of the best teachers I have taken. This class is tough and requires a lot of work, however, it is definitely obtainable. The best part about it is that he wants you to succeed, but you have put in the effort. This class has definitely made me a better student and I love the passion he has for the material.
Dr. Spranger is fantastic. I always watched lectures after class so I wasn't one of his more known students, but I respect him greatly. The course itself is difficult, but Spranger is extremely knowledgeable and caring which helps a ton. I truly can't believe people have ever had unkind words to say about him. I made an account just to write this!
Overall, I think that this class was challenging but it probably will be helpful for any pre-medicine students. I had a lot going on when I took the class and Dr. Spranger wasn't very understanding so, I'm not a fan of him as a person. I have to admit that his lectures were very informative
He is one of the most caring professors I have ever had. The class is hard just by the nature of the material but he goes through everything in the most simple and straight-forward way. He was always available to help outside of class times. Lectures have a ton of information but were very interesting. Exams were fair but challenging (wording IMO).
He is amazing at teaching. Many extra points, but the amount of stuff on each lecture is ridiculous. Be ready to spend your whole summer studying for one class, which is only worth 3 credit. It is not worth it to spend that amount of time studying for one class. I would take it with another professor to have time for other classes or for the MCAT.
Since day one of class you know exactly what to do to get the grade that you want. He offers his student with all tools needed such as: study skills, review sessions by TAs, suggested YouTube links that cover class material, application and practice Questions. Care about his students and motivate them. His lectures were interesting. Love the class!
I rarely give 5/5 rates, but Prof Spranger deserves it! He was the best biology professor I have had in undergrad and I have taken 9 different biology classes. Wish he could be my professor for PA school! He is the best. Some of these bio profs at wayne state should learn to be like him smh
Very annoying person, doesnt respect students at all. Has this fake tough guy act to act like hes in control yet he has to given 1/3 of the exam points as extra credit to inflate his scores.
Not a fan. Not at all
Want an aneurysm? Take his class.
Dr. Spranger is an amazing lecturer and never puts anything on the exam that he didn't say in class. However, this course is extremely content-heavy and the tests are notably hard. I 100% recommend taking him but beware of the time commitment and strong study skills you will need to get an A in the course.
Do not take
One of the best professors I had so far, he is very down to earth and tells you like it is. I enjoyed every lecture with him and his exams were not too hard. Great professor!
Explains concepts well, but LOTS of content for exams. Likes to waste time by calling out students for dumb things (sleeping, using phone, etc) rather than time on content. For every exam we didnt finish the intended chapters in class, so he'd post all lectures of the unfinished chapters 2-3 days before the exam expecting us to know all the content.
One of the best professors. People think he's rude but he just reciprocates energy
He teaches this class in the summer usually. It's super content heavy. Your entire summer will most likely go into studying for this class. There are a total of 4 exams. The lowest exam of the first 3 is replaced by the average of all 4 exams. He offered us 15 points of EC total in Summer 2025. Still better than taking karen mhyr.
The class is time-consuming. Just writing notes for each lecture took 4-6 hours. The professor is excellent at teaching the content though, and you will learn a lot of good material. If you take human phys during the summer prepare to dedicate a large chunk of time towards it. Class is hard, but professor is great so it balances out.
This class is tough especially in the summer semester-it's a lot of dense content but if you put in the hard work, you will do well and you'll learn a lot. Spranger is a great professor and truly cares about the success of his students. Show up, ask questions, put in the time and work, and you will genuinely learn and retain so much!
