doesn't know how to teach period. Tests are hard. i advice not to take her
well shes a good teacher. but i cant understand her very well.
she's a very nice person, and thats where it ends. i question how she enforces in lab/lecture one concept, and puts something else on the test she didnt cover. and i thought my 1st chem teacher was difficult 2 understand; she doesnt get any easier. youll only pass if you have ALL THA TIME IN THE WORLD. if you work/have other hard classes, good luck
Never this teacher again. Chemistry is my major but I can't get anything from her lecture and her lad is as well. Actually, she doesn't know how to teach, test is very hard and wasnot covered in the lecture. She even can't answer your questions. The only good thing of this teacher is that she very nice.
Nice person bad teacher thats all i can say and test are extermely hard mainly because she doesnt cover everything that she is suppose to.
I actually feel sorry for her.She wants to help her students but gets frustrated at her own lack of teaching ability. Immposible test and no clue what she's doing-BUT, she's the only one teaching 101A... so your just screwed!!!
Shes a nice person, but doesnt really know how to teach-the lecture is pretty much just show and tell of the book. As a result, the class requires a lot of independent learning. The tests are a bit hard, but as long as you put in the time to study, you can easily get an A. Plus she can be very lenient on grading.
shes a really nice person and wants to help. But her help isn't worth anything. She tries really hard to help the class, but her techniques don'twork. if you need help you better look in a mirror. b/c she confuses you more. You better call your chem book dr. grant b/c that's who you'll be bascially learning from.
what has ohlone college come to? hiring unprofessional instructors such as Grant and Ganguly (Ochem). Both of these instructors have no interest in teaching and are no help at all. They enjoy gossip and failing students. I believe that they need to be fired or the Dean of Science should monitor they're weird teaching techniques closely.
Ohlone is too poor to hire the good teachers..

well? all i can say is drop the classes taught by her if you still can. You won't understand a thing from her. "I taught for 30 yrs" is not her true statement. Just look at her teachings. She just saying what's on the powerpoint. Maria, I applaud you for switching the lights in the lecture room so, the class can get some fun from being bored.
Poor professor... Even though she's trying to be a helpful person, noone gets her.. Well, i got a C so.. i worked my ass off but i can't get an A off her class.. so.. good luck with her..
Wow. She is the most GOD AWFUL teacher at ohlone college. My first test, she shows up late and then talks about how generous she is being when she gives us extra time. Her lectures are a mystery and it makes me think that they are just handingout PHDs to any crack head who applys. Dont expect any help from the lectures, or tests.
I like her teaching style and have found her classes to be reasonably easy. I don't know what everyone's whining about.
She really sux. She can't teach. I got A because I studied all by myself! I am now taking her 101B only because there is no other choices!! I wonder why Ohlone is still keeping her. Don't, never take her classes, otherwise you have to do more work after school!!!
Dr. Grant is a very kind, and helpful person. However, she is not a very good teacher. She is a nice person to chit-chat with, but that's not going to help you get a decent grade in her class. I and many other students had to teach ourselves Chemistry. She just reads off the book, nothing else so don't even go to lectures because they won't help. S
the worst class i have ever takcen in my life horrible instructor. Previos posters are absolutly correct i recieved an A in 101A and now am suffering through 101B with her again only reason i got a A was as others b4 me said i had to study my behind off out of class and undoing all the damage her lectuers did to me.
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER AS UR CHEM. U WILL SUFFER. THERE IS NO WAY U R GOING TO HAVE FUN IN THIS CLASS. SHE JUST CAN'T TEACH. EVERYONE SHOULD HELP GET RID OF THIS TEACHER. WAKE UP BOYS AND GIRLS. IT'S TIME TO DO SOMETHING BEFORE SHE SCREW UP OUR LIFE.
She's pretty horrible. She is very unclear, and teaches everything STRAIGHT from the book. Even her examples are the same from the book, which is very unclear to begin with. She takes forever to grade and give back tests, which do not help, because we have nothing to go on, for the next test. If at all possible, DO NOT take her!!
Wow i never thought i would say this but she is the worst teacher ever. Avoid her class at all costs!!!! Pray that she doesnt teach any future chemistry classes at ohlone!!
four words: most suckiest teacher ever! If you want to know how the lectures are like, go to a study room and stay there for 50 mins for 3 days a week.. At least that's less more boring than her lectures.
DON'T TAKE HER!! Try to avoid taking Chem 101A with her. You will learn NOTHING!! It'll be easier to teach yourself than letting her teach you. And if you have any questions, you're better off asking a tutor, or another instructor. If you ask her, she'll just confuss you. Honestly, she's one of the WORST teachers I've EVER had.
She's a very nice teacher but is heavy on the accent. Her teaching skills are good but doesn't have study guides to pass out on test days, A study guide would be most helpful MS. GRANT!!! Overall, a nice teacher, caring person but on the study part, learn it yourself! All the tests comes from the book and it's HARD AS FUG.
The material itself needs time to study and absorb. Can't totally relay on the prof. Read and understand the text and you'll do fine. An A is earned, not handed to you

Grant is a decent teacher. Her lectures do not include enough detail and are too fast, but this is understandable considering the alloted time. The worst part about Grant is her unresponsiveness. She doesn't answer e-mails, at least not in a reasonable time and anything turned in is returned ridiculously late. She needs better time management!!!!!!
She is not hard. Although disorganized and her lectures arent well thought out, but she is helpful and nice. But, it is very possible to do well, just study owl and book you will do fine.
I will say this once. "READ THE ****ING BOOK"

she's nice, hard to understand at times, goes through everything very quickly, makes herself available if you have questions, OWL is really important and helpful, she's not an easy A, you really need to devote a lot of time to pass this class

I feel like I'm reviewing a different teacher. I found Dr. Grant to be knowledgable and helpful. Tests are straightforward and fair with an emphasis on comprehension and precision (yes, that means no partial credit on calculations). Due to the shortened semester and voluminous material, lectures are fast paced. So read the book beforehand.
She does not care much about her students or if she does, she certainly doesn't show it. It's small things that show this. For example, embedded movies in her lectures did not work for half the semester. Moreover, her tests do not always reflect what she teaches in class. Finally, she is often unclear. At least OWl almost replaces her.
Complain all you want, the secret is to go to her office hours. She is GREAT and will spend the time to make sure you understand the material. Get what you can out of her lectures. A High level of mastery of the material is expected on tests! - Read ahead! - Use OWL(FTW) to learn how to do calcs in your head(stare, use calc, write ans)x5-10. Tutor!
the most boring professor ever. I can't believe Grant replaced Klent. That is most shocking thing I've heard since Star Jones lost weight. Blah. Fire her!!!

she is overall a nice teacher really helpful.. depends on student a lot...if u really wanna get into it then take her...you will find out more
not the best teacher to take but if you must better keep a sleeping bag next to her office because ull need to be there day and night to actually learn in class she know nothing in office she uses 50 diff books to give you the rite anwsers.
If you want to fail or stay at Ohlone for 4 years, take her =) I have found that she is the worst teacher God has laid on Earth, I dropped the class with a W grade, and I got an A n 106 and I took chemistry honors in high school. Grant is soo bad, Please don't take her. All the students writing good comment about her, wants to eliminate competition
She's bad. Never replys to emails, think she is super smart and that your at cAL.. stay away, away as possible
my second time taking her. she has ruined my life for the last time. studied my ass off and could not pass her tests. what she does is she puts questions on the test and she doesn't cover in class and put what she doesn't covers. she thinks we're geniuses who are very capable of doing extremely hard questions. she just grades and gets paid.
**** off Grant. You don't deserve to be a teacher.
she is always in her office hours. Yall just dont study hard enough or dont seek help because people have actually passed the class, including myself. stop being so lazy! good things in life never come easy.
dont take her just DONT!!!
okay th is is my warning to U...this teacher sucks BIG TIME do not take her, unless u want to ruin you life, or if ur palning on but-kissing, ot if u have serious passion to learn chemistry on you ouw. she will ruin ur life. i m not sure why the dean hasnt fired her yet? why is she still runing our students life?
I love Dr. Grant's philosophy, that college is a boot camp and it is your own responsibility to treat it as such. I don't like OWL online homework and I'll admit lectures were boring, but I give an A to any teacher who expects her students to do great things.
She is not good. Do not expect to learn anything from lectures or labs. If you want to pass, you must learn everything on your own from your book. But even then she tests on things that arent neccesarily in the book. Better to avoid her and take it with someone who knows how to teach. Im taking the night class this semester. AGAIN, STAY AWAY!!!
Unless you're already a chem genius, do not take her. There's no doubt that Grant knows chemistry but she can't teach. Her lectures are straight from the book but even then there are still holes so might as well read the damn book. By the time I left, there were about a dozen students left from 40 in the beginning.
OMG worst chem professor ever. I now go to SFSU but when i had her at ohlone, it was the my first science class to start college with and ended up with a C+. LEctures are carbon copy of the book, doesn't explain or prepare u well for exams. U might as well study on your own. Don't go to class, she wastes time. STAY AWAY
If you take this class, be very prepared to study on your own! Lectures are very bland and don't help when it comes to test. The only way to prepare for test is through lapsi. Good luck if you ignore all the warnings....
Hey come on man ... this was my first sem,jus give her a break,if for people who alwasy hav problem, maybe she is not really good . but if come to socring ,ONCE U get the good TEST score A,not hard man,but other people comment is still true . class bored (unless u have freind to wake u up), lab- handle by ur own . dun hope much. TEST MAIN POINT!!
poor explainations, and teaching experiences
hate her. HATE HER. She is the worst teacher i've ever had. Shes cant teach, all her lectures she got from a CD and are 2 chapters ahead of the homework we're assigned, and if you try to ask her a question in class she will just laugh at you and say "What i can't believe you don't know that!?" and then she just goes on as if you were just joking
She made me hate chemistry. Her lectures are boring and pointless, it is basically copy and pasted from the book. She doesn't speak english well, she counts in spanish. She NEVER has time for any students; she just says "no time no time sorrrry" Main thing is her tests are NOTHING like what u would expect, it's twisted and very hard!
highly NOT recommended! she can't teach, speak English, or be funny (she tries to, but she just makes a fool out of herself)
It's not that Ms. Grant isn't a nice woman because she is. It's just her teaching skills are very limited. She is not a very good teacher but she does know her stuff. I don't recommend her because she does not teach anything other than what is on her PowerPoints. Her tests are very difficult so if you want to learn, take another professor.
I use to love chem before taking her class. She thinks she's a know it all teacher, but sucks because she cannot teach. All she does is brag about her Ph.D in chem from some ghetto university, big deal. only 10 people took final and few passed with c-. I took this class@diff place and the teacher was from MIT and never showed off like her
LOTS OF OWL ONLINE HOMEWORK WHICH WASTES YOUR TIME. SOME HOMEWORK IS OK BUT THIS WAS RIDICULOUS. TESTS ARE VERY VERY DIFFICULT. HER EXTRA CREDITS DON'T COUNT FOR NOTHING. SHE MADE ME DISLIKE CHEM. BUT I FIGURED I GO TO A DIFFERENT COLLEGE BEFORE CALLING IT QUITS. IF YOU INTEND ON TAKING CHEM AND PASSING GO FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR OR COLLEGE. REALLY.
I REALLY DO FEEL SORRY FOR THE STUDENTS THAT HAVE TO TAKE HER. Her primary goal is to FAIL YOU. believe me, she said it herself when she was subbing for my Ochem class. Do urself a TREMENDOUS FAVOR and take either Fronko or Gelfand for A and B when its offered. IT will save you the pain, suffering, and not to mention YOUr PRECIOUS TIME.
Don't take her. If you can't take the class with other professors in Ohlone, take it somewhere else. Stay away from her. Make her get fired please..
every 1 that given dr G a bad rating. has never really learn that u have to teach urself in college at times. The teacher can't hold your hand throughout college. These ppl obviously took chem cause they had to take the on chem class and hated it like everyone else....Dr G is not as bad as ppl say she is. Just like any science class u have to study
I didnt realize that she is so great until i took other teacher's 101B. Lots of people hate her because her tests are always tricky. it's not that easy to get good grade if u dont study hard. But I really like her now because I found out she is helpful and she really teach u something that u can use in ur life. She is responsible and funny~
get her fired. write to the dean, i did. she's ruining chemistry for engineering majors. get her fired write to the dean do something!
noway.
It's been a yr. since I had Grant & thank God I transferred to a UC. I would always assume that college (JC) if I find it hard here I prob. wont survive since if her class is hard, at UC it's harder. FALSE PPL! this is a myth. Hard at UC= good teachers, high expectancy, that's it. Hence, Grant aint at Berkley or other UC teaching.
She is incapable of teaching. period. Not only are her lectures full of analogies that are hard to follow at best, but she often changes subjects without warning. Her tests dont reflect what is emphisesed in class and what she is expecting us to know is not clear. She clearly knows a great deal about chemistry, but in no way belongs in a classroom
Dr. Grant is a nice woman. Her class is tough, but not impossible. You have to work REALLY hard to get a good grade. But Dr. Grant is extremely unclear during lecture. She gets off topic and talk about unrelated stuff. She also likes to jump around in her lectures. One thing that can be good or bad: If you get on her good side, it will be easier.
she is not bad at all as everyone think about her. if you pay attention in the class and ask her questions about the exams, you will be get a good grade. She expects her students understand in more deeply and widely. even though i get 2 F in quizzes and 1 F in exam at first, i still get an A for the following exam and quizzes by trying to study hard
I don't know what is wrong with people rating her as a good prof. I believe these r Grant's alts to begin with. Let's be honest here that she is no good. Avoid her if u luv ur GPA. She always brags about her PhD, & does not really care if u r trying really. There is no compromise in learning with this prof coz she thought u r a grad student.
she's one of the worst chemistry teachers ever. i don't think her lectures were ever interesting and i attented them only because of the attendance. if you really wanna learn chemistry, don't think about taking this instructor.
worst teacher at ohlone
Dr. Grant is definitely knowledgable in her field, although her teaching skills are an F- in my book. I spent at least 26 hours a week studying for her class and tests, completing homework, and using outside sources and tutoring to get through her class and still failed. She gives NO partial credit and can hardly be understood in her lectures. BAD!
Though she offers no partial credit on tests, she does offer lots of extra credit opportunities. When the semester began, I had a hard time in her class (scored 68% on first test) but after awhile, I guess I learned HOW to take her tests and adjusted (98% last test). She listens to feedback on tests and does what she can to help (131D, prac. tests)
(class 102 chemistry in ohlone)she is a pain in the ...... u can never understand from her any thing her grades are so so so bad all her tests and quizes r not from the text book or even from the lecture she does alot of tricks in her tests she is the worse i wish she leavs teaching bad bad bad
don't take her; lots of HW, always confused with quizzes syllabus; only read the lecture from ppt! that's it! lab is in a rush.
her class and her powerpoint slides are both right off the topic. you need to study by yourself.but she gives you a lot of extra credits.
SHe is the worst teacher in Ohlone. If you want to learn something, dont take her class, waste of time.
she has the worst qualitites in every way you can think of. not only can she not teach, she is also very rude. one time she was telling me something and i said i understand and she told me to be quiet. wtf? she tries to embarass you in front of the whole class, like she enjoys it. ohlone must have been very desperate to hire her.
So I guess they are giving teaching degrees to any one now? Absolutely the most useless professor I've ever had. I would rather be trained by someone's pet monkey than have to bare another semester with doctor Grant. She needs to either go back to school and update her teaching credentials or just quit life.
This class was the most fun I've had in quite a while :) ... She gives way too much of extra credits so even a C student has a chance of getting an A in there. Extremely helpful, has flexible office hours if you ever are in need of help and she is willing to spend extra time to help you understand the material if you work with her.
You think you can handle this class? Let me just say this: the class average for the first test was 54%. The second test average was 34%. And Grant gets extremely excited by really low bell-curves. Oh, and the quizzes are just as bad.
she is a very hard teacher, if u wana get an FFFF take her, she is so mean, doesn't know how to speak english, doesn't understand chem, she should be out of Ohlone, by the last day to drop everyone dropped her there was only 5 students left in the class... soooooo bad
she is a very hard teacher, if u wana get an FFFF take her, she is so mean, doesn't know how to speak english, doesn't understand chem, she should be out of Ohlone, by the last day to drop everyone dropped her there was only 5 students left in the class... soooooo bad
I love the Grant alts that posted good reviews. Let's be honest here. She does not teach, but torment students. She reads power point slides line by line, even a 5 year old can do that & when it comes to the test none can be derived from the power point nor the book at all. Moreover, about 90% dropped her class & that says it all.
At first I hated Dr.Grant because she seemed impossible but if you attend Lapsy, go to her office hours, and study CONSTANTLY there is a chance. Also do all the extra credits it will boost up your grade by 10% =)
After just finishing a year of O=Chem at a school in the pacific northwest I can safely say that this class was ****. I will never forget a question on one of her midterms: "draw the resonance structure for thiocynate." She did not give the chemical formula. I had that same question second quarter of O=Chem!! Probably has a mailorder PhD...
Doc. Grant is such a wonder professor. She can make a dumb student understand her materials, but! she'll grade your test so hard like forgetting units will give u a score of zero. Theres no partial credits either you leave it blank or get it wrong. You have to pay extra attentions in her class. Her tests arent that hard you just need Algebra 2...
By Algebra2 I meant, no calculators. She doesn't allow using calculator on her first test/quiz. She'll make you suffer asking you LARGE NUMBERS on her quiz and without letting you use the calculators. Thats her DEFINITION of Algebra 2. Overall shes a nice teacher and she can teach really well. But she will grade you so hard. Its all up to you...
attend lapsi, she always has at least 1 or more test questions similar to those in lapsi. She is unclear and doesn't answer her questions well. give lots of extra credit. I learned from OWL, lapsi, and my friend's explaination, n that's how i got my A :D and her final is a state community college final, extremely easy! her grading system confusing
She's an easiest teacher I've ever met! I got an A+ even though I didn't really pay lots of attention in class. I recommend here if ya really wanna learn.
Definitely worse teachers out there, but if you are truly interested in the subject, find a different teacher. The class is all about struggling to pass and has little to do with forming a strong foundation in chemistry. She is very unclear and all her lectures/powerpoints are directly from the book.
Why is she still teaching here? Seriously needs to be reevaluated. No one would let Grant continue teaching Chemistry if they actually saw how terrible she was at it.
In all honesty, Grant is a bad person. She's really nice and has a good sense of humor. However, her lectures can be improved on. It's highly recommended that you keep up with the chapters in the book, attend lectures, do all HW, and go to extra tutoring. So far, I'm getting away with a B in the course despite some of my average exam scores.
I heard so many bad rumors about Grant, and seriously couldn't believe that there was a teacher that could actually be this bad. She has a very strong accent, has horrible lectures that you don't learn anything in, you just end up reading the book. She's horrible at answering questions and finds anyway to make you feel stupid.
She is a nice person. That is the only good thing about her. Her lectures are useless and there is no point of going to them. Her tests have nothing to do with what she lectures, the class average for an exam I just took was a D. And this was supposely the easiest exam of them all. If Ohlone was not cutting back, she would have been fired long ago.
her lectures are more helpful if you read the textbook before going to classes. After doing all the reading and finishing OWL, the tests shouldn't be too hard.It is like a self-studying course.
Her lecture is somtimes confusing, but she do make you think during the lecture, that's what i like her lecture. READ THE BOOK yourself
I do not think dr. Grant is a horrible teacher. She does take her class very seriously and will assign unheard of amounts of work. Her quizzes can sometimes be difficult, but her tests are very fair. I thought her lectures were very useful, she has been teaching chemistry for a long time and has a lot of useful tricks to help the students learn.
I BARELY have an A right now and I took AP Chem. No matter what we say on here, you will most likely not listen and will think "eh she can't be that bad". Then when you take her it hits you and the regretting starts. Then you will come here and try to warn others and the cycle continues. STAY AWAY!!
Her tests and exams are hard and tricky. Be honestly I never get an A in all quizes and tests at the beginning of sem but her lecture is fun and I learned from her. SHE MADE STUDENT THINK! That's the best thing in the class. ;)
STAY AWAY.. She is hard as hell. She doesnt listen to you. Her test consist of trick questions. You either get the question 100% right or its 100% wrong. any mistake will cost your grade.
She teaches well but not as in depth as she needs to due to time. She makes lectures interesting and actually makes you think. The tests and quizzes have trick questions and she grades hard. Doesn't really give partial credit. The class is very demanding because of all the homework she assigns. But you do learn a lot.
She is horrible it is like going to school not at Ohlone but more than UC Berkley. She is tough and don't dare to take chemistry at ohlone if u want an A grade... JUST an advice to you all and warning as well. She is d head of Chem department and she writes all the tests. Don't know how to communicate and she still there!!! She needs to get fired..
I've taken her for 101A&B. She is HARD. I got A's in both classes. This is a class where you will LEARN not from her, but hw and tutoring. Tests are hard, you can only miss a few to get a good grade in general. The class should be 10 units not 5. LOTS AND LOTS of HW and LABS. Be prepared to do HOURS of self study. You will learn everything urself!
Dr.Grant is an amazing teacher. Yes, her class is hard, but you can't always fly by in life. If you study hard enough and do more than what is expected you will do good. Go ahead of the game and use pictures in pre lab and post labs and she will give you extra credit. Doing the optional owl is also extra credit.
If you want to be prepared for life, highly recommend.LOTS of hw+self study+tutoring but you will learn the true value of hardwork and the real college life. If you don't want to study, don't want to do much work, and want to live your life taking the easy way out, do not take this class.
you will have to do most of the work. do OWL review problems and read the book. Her lectures arent very clear but she really explains things well when one-on-one. Also the book she tells you to use is horrible (zumdahl). I used a different, more cheap book (chemistry & chemical re activity by Kotz)than the one suggested and it helped tremendously.
horrible!
This is a self study class pretty much. Im learning all the material through the OWL homework and textbook. She is very nice and has a true passion for chemistry. However she isnt very clear in her lectures. So lots of studying is a must!
Grant is a nice person and she does try to help if you ask for it, but she's not the best at actually teaching. Don't get me wrong, she knows her material, but actually conveying it isn't her forte. The book isn't very helpful, and the homework system is terrible. She's a harsh grader as well, so be wary.
She is the worst professor I have had. I hated going to class and she made me feel stupid and like a failure. It wasn't until I transferred to CSU East Bay and took the class over that chemistry made sense to me. DO NOT TAKE HER. She ruined my self-confidence so much I almost dropped out of college because I thought I couldn't handle it.
Hard work required! Hours and hours with OWL (online hw) her lectures confused me. She is willing to help but she is harsh with grading tests. Mess up one step and you get 0 points or 1 if you're lucky. Forget units and you get half credit. If you try hard though, an A is obtainable, but it won't be easy. Note: I took this class over summer.
It's true to say that Grant is not good at teaching, but as a college student, we should learn most of materials on our own, not rely so much on her lecture. The best way to study for her class is read the textbook (for me it's not that horrible) and do OWL prior to her lecture. If you have questions, ask her individually, she will help you a lot.
Horrible! Tests are hard and she doesnt really teach. I've spent hours on hw and reading test and I still can't get a C on her tests! I've let go of every class this semester just to study for this chem class and I'm still failing! I would take chemistry at a different campus because I guess all science professors at ohlone are not good at all!
Please DO NOT take Grant if you actually want to pass Chemistry. I have never failed a class before and am normally a good student but she cannot teach (or really, makes no effort to). She doesn't care about her students and is demeaning to you if you don't understand her questions. She ruined my self esteem and self confidence in school work.
Stay away! She can't teach at all. A student didn't know how to do a question in class and she responds THATS NOT PROBLEM (in a rude tone). The class stayed quiet after that. Her tests are surprisingly hard and she doesn't care about your grade. Also, the online homework will kill your weekends. This is my first class that I am failing at Ohlone!
Thought I'd write this before the registration dates. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. She can't teach and her tests are very confusing. She doesn't care about her students. People who are repeating this class are failing again! More than half has dropped and more failing. NO PARTIAL CREDIT. As stated, OWL will kill your weekends. You've been warned. AVOID!!
Do Not Take!!! Even with an A in Chem102, I had a very hard time in this class and I'm doing at least 8-10 hours of studying per week. Lectures are difficult to understand. and homework WILL take hours. Tests are very tricky as well. Tough grader as well. Again, Do Not Take. You've been warned.
Please avoid this professor. She doesn't teach at all. She doesn't answer quesitons. Makes test impossible to get a A on. Homework twice a week. FOR GODS SAKE avoid this teacher. I pulled soo many all nighters, and studied 10 hours a week for this class n still couldnt pass. dont be like me and think i will work hard n get an A. its IMPOSSIBLE
Avoid this professor. You've been warned. Do not take her class if you have a lot of units.
This is a "weed out" class. Please, if you don't know what that is look it up. A lot of pre-med, pre-pharm,pre-opt, have to take gen chem, this class is to weed out those students that don't have what it takes to go to medical school or whatever health profession. You will spend hours and hours studying, but it will be worth it in the end.
Grant knows her material & you might appreciate her more in hindsight than while actually taking her class. Keep all your work & keep track of your points because she loses stuff. Kiss her butt & go past the normal call of duty to stay on her good side. She is helpful when you ask questions privately but not always if you ask during a lecture.
I'm won't complain about the difficulty of the course. It's tough. It should be. You should have to study. However Professor Grant is the worst, teacher I've ever had. She's extremely condescending and acts as if she expects you to already be a chemist. There is no help at all during labs. Embedded tutor does most of the actual teaching.
Don't worry Grants class isn't the hardest class in the world. You'll need to be committed to this class though and remember to study the key details. Mrs. Grant is quite picky about significant figures, units, etc, but If you're planning on becoming a doctor or engineer, these things count. The tests+quizzes are mostly multiple choice as well.
This teacher is not easy. She's very tricky on her tests and a few points off will give you a bad grade. She is a nice person though. You should not overload while taking this class, unless you're great at chemistry. It's not such a bad thing though. These things matter if you're planning to become a scientist, doctor, engineer, etc.
Definitely not an easy teacher, however you can get through it if you read the book and start studying for tests as soon as you can. Don't expect to get anything higher than a B though. I'm struggling to keep my grade at a C. Lecture atteneance isn't mandatory, however she has quizzes every class and believe me, you do not want to miss those.
I always took AP science courses so I underestimated this class. I know chemistry is challenging but she really does not help her students. She answers most her questions with, "I don't know. You figure it out". Really doesn't care about students and doesn't understand we have other classes. Be prepared to study everyday and that wont be enough.
Don't concentrate so much on lab work since the tests and quizzes are worth most of your grade. Also If you are premed strive for atleast a B since C's narrow your med school possibilities. Only take another rigorous class with this class, otherwise you will do what most overload students do and end up dropping classes anyways. DO EXTRA CREDIT!!!!
Dr Grant is a good person and does her part to try to teach you during lecture. The reality is, however, is that you will have to teach yourself most of the material. This class was EXTREMELY time consuming, as i dedicated hundreds of hours outside of class cumulatively throughout the semester. This class will test your dedication as a student.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS !!!!! She jus wants to see you fail. Worst teacher ever.
Tough grader. Should be slower and more clear while teaching. Very demanding of your time, like unreasonably demanding. BUT DO NOT GIVE UP, keep going and you will pass. GO to EVERY seminar to get extra credits, that is what I did. Try Read before class to understand the material better and study for quizzes.
After being warned by friends who took the class before me, I still registered hoping to be the one to say 'It wasn't that bad.' However, this class is extremely difficult. Her lectures do not help much when it comes to the tests. Do the online homework and read the book. Be prepared to study like you've never studied before if you want to pass.
Dr Grant is very passionate about chemistry and is really nice. However, she doesn't do a good job at relaying the information and expects you to know it in great detail. You pretty much have to teach yourself chemistry, by doing the OWL homework problems over and over again. Highly recommend you take Chem at a different school
Professor Grant means well, its just sometimes she gets frustrated with the questions that students are asking her. But she's a nice person overall and wants her students to succeed. Her grading is a little hard but she knows her stuff. Her accent is a little hard to understand but its funny when she tries to explain chemistry terms!
The key to passing one of her classes is to self-study. Come into class with the mind set that she will teach you the basics and it's your job to study the little details cause the test will cover the little details. Also, I would not recommend taking this class with 2+ hard classes. Ask her for help. Go to her office hours. Do not skip lecture.
She only taught the lab portion of CHEM 101A for this semester. Her accent does get in the way of clarity/understanding a bit but she tries her best in helping all students. Lab report grading isn't too hard as long as it follows proper format & is fully completed. She explains the lab at the start of class & usually just leaves us alone to work.
Dr. Grant tries her best to help students learn chemistry and all you h ave to do is ask for help then she will try to help you. Her class is only hard if you don't put in the effort and seek help as needed. A suggestion is to do problems from the book in addition to the OWL homework so you can be prepared for the tests and quizzes.
Her instructions contradict themselves and she takes it out on the students. If you want to learn Chemistry and not be yelled at and degraded on a daily basis, take it with someone else. She actually makes very little attempt to help students, despite the "claims" I hear.
She really knows alot about chemistry, so if you have questions you should ask her. Clicker quizzes and grades labs pretty generously, just turn in what the syllabus says. Tests multiple choice and free response. Homework almost every week, so don't fall behind. Our final was a standarized test from the ACS, all multiple choice. Bring scantrons.
Professor Grant, has no respect whatsoever for any of her students. She suspects you to come in and already know the material. I guess if she can get a phD in chemistry we should all realize it's possible for each and every one of us. Basically, avoid this class under all circumstances. She's not worth it. Don't even bother taking her sh*t.
I don't understand this teacher. I don't understand myself, I don't understand this class, I don't understand life.
Chemistry can be tough but Prof. Grant does her best to teach the concepts. In the end, how you do in this class is largely based on how much time and effort you're willing to spend on the class. My advice is to form study groups with other students, go to her office hours, and keep up with the homework and lecture material.
Her class isnt that bad if you have background knowledge in chem(I took APChem in hs). She is pretty bad at explaining concepts though. She does a better job in OH. lab reports are easy and will boost your grade. She assigns a ton of HW but its easy & gives ex credit problems. She is nice and cares abt her students. only take if ur good at chem
She makes it hard to be able to succeed in class when there are no study guides and the quizzes are done on clickers with 30 seconds to answer a problem. Very hard to understand a lot of concepts with her explanations. This class is just like learning it on your own.
Dr. Grant has a bad reputation. Her class is definitely not an easy A, however, I really don't think its as hard as many people say it is. Follow her instructions for labs (including post lab) and you will do fine. She cares about accuracy and she genuinely wants her students to succeed. Quite a bit of extra credit oppotunities
Terrible professor. If you are extremely good at Chemistry go ahead and take her otherwise take any other professor. Her lectures do not help it is actually better to do something else during lecture like. . . reading the textbook for knowledge. The labs are super easy and quite fun. The materiel is not taught well enough.
I have never met a more disrespectful teacher. Her lectures teach little to nothing, she belittles students for doing poorly, and her tests can cover different material than what she goes over during lecture. Do not take this class. If she is the last choice for Chem101A, then wait another semester for a better teacher.
Doesn't really help students during lab. We were often on our own, trying to figure things out with classmates. She grades pretty harshly on the labs & is known for being the hardest chem teacher in this school. Lectures were difficult to follow, didn't make sense, and often too fast, but still go to class for the clicker quizzes. Tests were hard
Yeah dont take her class she pretty hard in terms of tests, if you do taker her class i recomend trying to find an old student and ask for their old tests (she always changes them so its not cheating) . START STUDYING FOR THE FINAL EARLY it like a super boost for your grade. and do all the extra credit it helps alot.
Worst teacher ever. She makes easy stuff so hard. She likes to use hand sigh to teach.
Took the online class and in-class lab. SO MUCH HOMEWORK all due online with MasteringChemistry (Worse than MathLab, frustrating, glitchy, slow) Grant doesnt contact us apart to tell us to take the tests. Felt like she taught nothing and the lab prof had to help us all catch up A LOT. Hated this class and hated having to have google teach me.
This class (lab is separate w/ different prof) is 100% taught by the pearson Chem version of mymathlab. Grant did none of the teaching and the book is trash. I didn't learn anything and the Lab prof could tell that we were all struggling and had to teach us the best she could in limited time. Grant only ever emailed to tell us to take the tests.
Shes a very obnoxious person and doesnt seem to conduct herself in a way that makes her seem professional or competent. The class is extremely easy though, you can practically google the fcking test so im not sure what some of these dolts here are complaining about in that regard. That being said, having her as a professor made me hate chemistry
Honestly I have never met a lazier professor. I had her for labs only and all she would do is go to her room and sit there and on occasions she would give us instructions. When we would ask her for help she would mostly just tell us to look at the lab manual. She rolls her eyes at you when you ask her about a grade from a lab. Avoid her.
Okay, so I told myself I won't write a review no matter how bad I thought she is. Honestly, this Prof is the worst ever! Avoid her ! She doesn't care about students and doesn't like her job obviously. Not sure why she is teaching! Very dissapointed! I put in a lot of effort but didn't get result needed.
really bad professor. She only reeding the PPT, I had nothing to learn from her class. The final is for all chapters.
Incompetent. She didn't put any work into the curriculum; didn't even seem like she knew what was in the Pearson powerpoints & MasteringChem. Didn't assign much HW, so our grades depended on us doing well on the in-class tests. The average grade for the final exam was 120/200. She also sucks at using technology. You're better off teaching yourself.
Whenever she would assign hw (online and often) or classwork (not often) she would NEVER input the grade! She takes 3+ weeks to input test grades, which are scantrons so I don't know why it takes long. Lectures are pointless, you learn more from labs(different professor). I do not recommend this class! There's no feedback or extra help!
I took a hybrid and basically was "taught" online by Grant and then another chem teacher would do labs with the class.... I did not like how the class was revolved around online Pearson. Legit 2-3 Pearson homework due daily. Around 150 homework that take 1-3 hours per homework assigned...
