cheesy, very strict in following directions, waste time in class telling you about lame stories, these lame stories are on the test also.
Focus on the Book only. Literally less than 1% of the test question come from class. No lie.
Cool guy with neat background. But come on, a whole hour of my day wasted on "group project"? Terrible attendance taking procedures. Assistants have very bad attitudes. Got an A, but class was really boring and a frankly a waste of time.
Very interesting lectures
You have to go to his class to listen to stories that will be on the tests. Most of his tests come from the book, which he never discusses in class. It can be an easy class if you read the material. I got a B in the class. It's really not that hard. if you read and go to class.
easy if you go to class
If you can deal with his anal ways, follow the directions exactly, always go to class and manage to memorize stuff in the book that he doesn't talk about you can get an A. It is possible. But you really have to try. The lectures are not that bad to sit through once a week.
Explain to me why knowing his office hours is important enough to be a question on the first test? If I want to know his office hours, I'LL LOOK AT THE SYLLABUS. Expect to waste a good amount of time with taking attendance. Listen for the black tarry stool story - very entertaining.
Avoid! He expects you to remember the colors of ties in pictures of the book, tells stories about his bowel movements, and has a fixation with cats! For example: he has 800 students. He had to curve exams so 52% was a B!! That's how terrible he tests. Very vague and confusing!
I actually found the stories he tells that others complain about to be kinda interesting and well-told. His attendance procedure is ridiculous, and you do have to sit around a while waiting during the "group project" session. Also you must read his book he wrote (30-40$) in addition to textbook.
Class sucks leave now
bad class, expects you to remember everything you read about, doesnt help you prepare for any of his tests
Not only do you have to buy a $135 book that he NEVER teaches from but tests from, he makes you buy his book $35 that is only used for the 1st test. $35 x 800 students a semiester! Is this legal? He leaves 1/2way through class while you do a "group project" for an hour then his TAs take attendance.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Stay away! A nightmare!
Great Class. I found him to be halarious. He tells lots of stories.Very Amusing. I have never opened the book and got an A in the class. Very easy and worthwhile. I would recommend to anyone!
DONT WASTE YOUR TIME...HE TELLS STORIES BETTER THAN HE TEACHES!!!
Weird way of testing
Tells a lot of stories but they are easy to remember and he puts about 15 questions on the exam from his stores all other questions come from the book. Do the best you can on the 1st test which involves his book and stores and questions from the text book.
Dr. Marvin Karlins is an outstanding professor. His lectures are very helpful and I recommend his. Go to class and pay attention to her lectures and strict, but very fair guidelines. You will succeed in this course. Read his book Romancing the Clock.
He simply doesn't teach. He spends 2 1/2 hrs. on stage trying to impress a crowd full of students who have to laugh at his sophomoric jokes. He is disgusting and completely inappropriate. His TA's do most of the work. He says up front that it doesn't matter how you evaluate him b/c he has tenure
Easy A. Pay attention to the lectures and read the chapters. If you do this and dont get an A, you should drop out of college. No Homework, No projects, Easy grading system....Based on a distribution where 90% of students get C or higher.
Great Professor. Tells interesting stories that tie into what he is teaching. Very knowledgeable and his book was highly entertaining, i enjoyed reading it!! Would take him again if i had the chance! woohoo!!
I just hate his class!! He is a very good lecture but teribble teacher!
Karlins was actually very interesting to listen to. Since he has changed the course structure this last semester it is much easier than in years past. Although he might be a bit anal about his exams, they are easy and predictable. You just have to go to class and listen to lectures to do well.
Easily the least hardworking professor at USF. Rarely stays for the whole class. Doesn't even come to exams. Very lazy.
Great motivator and speaker. Does not teach textbook material. 5 chapters (200 pgs.) per exam. Grades on a druken curve. Classes are short as the professor leaves after a short 30 min lecture.
Didn't care for him as a teacher but the class was easy. No homework or projects. Listen to the stories in his lectures & read the book if you want an A. Otherwise you can earn a C or B.
HAHAHA this teacher was SO full of himself he made HIS OWN book a requirement...the whole book is about his personal "life examples" to try to teach business. In other words...class was EASY if you read the stuff...He uses his own lectures on exams so COME TO CLASS. grades on a wonderful curve.
tests are hard. his lectures are not even related to his tests. book will help you out. he just jokes around and wastes time. if you want to get A on his tests don't go to class. study home u will way better. doesn't quite answer your question directly. if u ask him question he will ask u the same question as you are the teacher and he is student.
Not a very good teacher. He likes to joke around and talk about himself too much. However, the class is easy enough. Suffer through it if you must, it could be worse.
Didn't care for this teacher but this one of the easiest classes ever. No homework or projects. Just come to class and listen to him. No need for the textbook. He only lectures an hour or so and then leaves you to discuss cases in groups. His grading scale is ridiculously easy!
Probably the most intelligent and best teacher I've had at USF-He has a PhD from Princeton. His book "Romancing the Clock" is outstanding. I actually read it twice and have recommended it and lent it out to at least 4 ppl. He tries to teach you about managing your life as well as a business. Great class and professor!! Humorous.
I thought Karlins was a great professor. Who cares if you have to buy his book? It's interesting, has a lot of good ideas, short and not expensive. The real text is dense though. I think he's really funny and he holds your attention well. Also, you never stay the full 2hours and 50min. I think it's rad he taught Bob Dylan guitar(seriously)!
Very entertaining and full of life! Love this class and would take it again in a heart beat. Has an awesome curve for exams and you get out of class early almost every time! Couldn't have asked for a better teacher. You must go to class though, some exam questions are from the lecture.
His lectures are memorable and interesting, but you're left on your own with the reading from the textbook--he'll never go over it in class. My best recommendation is always go to class, always, and use the textbook website, they have online flashcards and multiple choice quizzes.
Karlins has a great personality and has some really funny stories relating to the topics in class, but you are on your own with 5 chapters each test from the book. Don't take this class if you can't study on your own. Otherwise it's a very interesting class.
You must go to class! His lectures has nothing to do with the book and he will test you on his stories. You must read the material he assigns because that is 80% test and the other 20% are his lectures. Write down every story he tells b/c it will show up on the test. His first test is all about him and his life. Loves to talk a lot!
Karlins is a cool guy who has a LOT of interesting stories. EVERYTHING is fair game for tests--case studies, book, lectures, etc. Warning: book is VERY dry, but quite a bit of the tests come from the text. His book isn't too bad. Very interesting guy.
wish he would teach more. he barely makes 1 hr each class.
Weak prof that lacked motivation. Tests are nearly 95 percen from the book...WHICH HE NEVER MENTIONS N CLASS. Class is pointless after the first test. Study the book UP and DOWN. :(
Good teacher. Loves to talk about himself.
Basically you can just have one of your friends take notes or switch off and not need class because 90% of the tests after the first one are from the book which like everyone else said he goes over 0% in class. Dont procrastinate on reading because the chapters are lengthy and random material from them is tested.
The first test if purely from Romancing the Clock...after that it is a combo of lectures, text and case studies. The text is never covered in class so read it on your own...probably before 5 hours before the exam.
Easy class! The top 5% are guaranteed an A so you just have to do better than 95% of your peers! You need about a 75% avg to get an A, instead of the C you would get in most classes! Pay attention to his weekly lecture (only 1 hr) and read the material from the books. You should be able to guess the answer on 75% of the test questions if you do!
What do professors do when they can no longer teach? They lecture. Pretty lame course. You learn the subject on your own. His lectures and his book are a waste of time. Got an A in the class but no thanks to him. I hate professors who try to be funny, but are not.
Go to class and take decent notes, Karlins is pretty decent although his tests are based on obscure questions from his various lectures. Has a lot of stories and doesn't change them over the years but he's an all around good guy.
Attend the lecture write just about everything you can down or get a tape recorder. His third exam is BS. I came out with a B barley. I heard the final is also BS which I avoided. Score as high as possible on exam 1 cause its all down hill from there. He is the only professor for this course.
I thought this was one of the greatest classes I ever took. His lectures are extremely interesting. He doesn't lecture the book at all (you should be able to read it pretty quickly on your own) but does case studies and have very interesting lectures based on his personal experiences! Probably one of the best professors I ever had!
not a good teacher
This class was not very hard. you have to go to class, and you basically get bonus points, (easy test answers about lecture stories). The book is a little hard to read, but you are graded based on how well you scored compared to others in the class. If you read the material you will get an A or B because not many are willing to do that.
He is such a great professor. It is best to take his class after you have work experience to truly appreciate and understand the case studies. He offers so much more value by teaching case studies and not just sticking to the basic management text. His lectures are not just powerpoints that he reads off like other intro course professors.
This teacher was awesome!I don't know how he got bad ratings??He made his class very interesting and fun.Go to class and take notes on his stories-remember specific names bc they will show up on the test. The majority of the test(I think 75 %)is based on the ch.'s in the book(which is very easy to read) so read them!Overall, I liked this class a lot
doesn't spend much time in the classroom
Ok, the class is not THAT hard, BUT, and this is huge BUT, Pr. Karlins does not mention a word from the textbook! You have to read it on your own, and the book is not the most interesting book.He tells a lot of stories, which I didn't care for. Personally, I'd rather have him teaching the class at least some info from the book.I'm Disappointed.Got A
Class is not difficult at all! If you ATTEND LECTURES, read the chapter summaries from the textbook, and do decent on the exams, you will get an A. He curves all the exams. I got a 77% avg. on all the exams and that came out to an A! Stories are actually hilarious and keep u awake. Case studies are easy to understand. Take him, hes a good prof!
interesting guy, but if you do not read the text book or the case study's you will fail- by the way tests are on like 6 chapters so good luck memorizing all the crap.
Not a bad instructor. His lectures are interesting to listen to, and you will never fall asleep. Usually gives 1 1/2 hour lecture and 1 hour case study. I never attended the case studies, but you have to get the handouts. You MUST read the textbook for his exams...which is a lot of info to cover. Overall, I got a B and I didn't study that hard
SO WEIRD! He tells you stories to get a point across in his lectures and he will ask you about them on the exam. However, he doesn't talk about the book material but you have to know all these chapters for the test, so it is A LOT of reading and memorization. Tests are multiple choice and he curves based on how everyone else did in the class.
This guy is nuts. Tells crazy, obscene stories that have nothing to do with management. Doesn't cover book at all. Tests are weird, covering obscure, irrelevant facts. He's funny tho. Covers case studies in class. Bananas.
THIS GUY is nuts tellrediculous stories and never ever says anything about the book, but that is what the tests are on. he grades on a curv and it depends on your class as to how well you do
Here's the deal. If you don't read the material and study you will get an F bottom line. I have read the chapters well ahead of the test, studied the vocabulary, and attended the lectures. I've got a low A so far. His exams aren't easy but if you do your work you'll succeed. It's really that easy.
I just took this teacher in Spring 2007 and I thought it was really easy. You need to write down his stories from the lectures esp. for the 1st test. 1st test comes straight from the Romance the Clock book + a couple ? from the main book. Must read the book the entire class. Test's comes straight from it. Read it and take notes and you will get an
what a joke this class was. Not only are the lectures almost a complete waste of time & maybe 5 of the questions on the 60 point tests, but the exams are very difficult. AVG grades on all 3 tests were low D's. Granted he has a mild curve but it doesn't do much to change the grades. Take someone else you might learn something & get a good grade.
Pretty fun class, but make sure you show up for ALL LECTURES as that's about 10-20 questions on a 60 question exam! Study the book (including the one he wrote) and know them like the BACK OF YOUR HAND! He'll ask questions on things in the book that AREN'T in BOLD! You're graded against EVERYONE else too! Take his class seriously!! HIGHLY REC :)
He shows up just before class, gives a short lecture, and generally doesn't appear to care too much. Waste of time.
Listen to his stories they are the key and read the book otherwise you'll fail.
It's easy to get an A but don't expect it to come easy. Be at ALL lectures and take very good notes. His stories make it easy to remember the in-class stuff. You are on your own with the book and he expects you to know a lot of the material. Read the chapters in a timely manner and review them the couple of days before the test. GO TO CLASS
It is an easy class. All have to do is go to class write down the stories.Easy easy class.
Easy class if you: attend, read his book he wrote, take notes on his stories, read the case studies, do the practice tests in the back of each chapter & go to the publishers student companion site & do the practice tests there(same ?s on the tests) He does curve which is a HUGE help. He often gets off track & starts talking fast but has great ideas
i'm just amused because my parents had him as a prof in the 70s...
ask him about the blueberries
While his lectures are quite entertaining, only a few questions from the lectures are on each test. However good you are at memorizing the book is what your grade is based on. He never lectures on anything from the book, which means it's all up to you. Nice guy but odd and definitely skewed in teaching methods. Work hard and read that book.
Go to Class!!!!! Tests questions are over the smallest details. Tests are difficult but they are curved thank God. Must have the book because he sure as hell doesnt teach any of it in class.
hes very intelligent
Poorly written tests. Lectures never covered the material on the tests and were just his personal storied. He once spent 1 hour of class telling us a story about his fecal matter. Funny guy, great comedian, but not a good professor. I was told he was once great, but he is now burned out.
worst professor ever. if you take this class, make sure you go to the lectures and take notes on his stories. they show up on the tests. i tried to email him and the email he gives to students doesnt even work! what a waste of money and time.
The first test is based solely on the Romancing the Clock book and his lectures. You HAVE TO attend class and take GOOD notes b/c he's tells stories and asks them in detail on the tests. Also you HAVE TO read the book thoroughly and highlight key points,he doesn't lecture on the book at all but its the majority of the tests. I got an A doing this
Personally, I liked this class. He is very funny. The KEY to pass his class is to take notes on EVERYTHING he says in class even the minor details COUNT!. READ his book and I mean all of it! He doesn't cover the textbook in class. It's up to you to go over it. Make sure you read the WHOLE chapters not just the defninitions. ATTEND ALL lectures!
Great guy nice stories and the tests are hard because he just gives you chapters to study and no defined items so all is fair game.
He's a funny guy with plenty stories to tell. Write down everything he says. Read his book for the first test because that's the easiest one. The other tests are a bit hard. Make sure you study the terms from the text book.
Got an A. Exams strictly from the text, few questions from lecture. VERY STRICT during exams, but nice during lectures. lots of non graded labs, class rarely goes the full amount of time, no PowerPoints. Take him, he helped me narrow what I want to do in life. Great!
I had him for introduction to Management. Great Class. Karlins is hilarious. Go to class for 2 reasons-1) Its a great time. His lectures are funny and you'll never be in class the full time (except for maybe the first day). 2) He'll tell you what from his lectures is going to be on the test. He makes it very easy to get an A. Just go to class.
Gives interesting and useful lectures (make sure to write every key thing that he says), however, you're on your own with the textbook, and you better read every chapter cause the tests are about 90% textbook and 10% notes
Not a fan of his teaching style. I didn't feel that I learned much as most of what he lectures on is common sense. The tests are difficult and you need to be good at memorizing material. I don't like to bash teachers but I feel that I didn't get much from him and wouldn't take him again if given the choice.
His lectures are entertaining, but his tests are difficult. 75% book, 25% class notes. I recommend using the study guide in the back of the book for each chapter.READ EVERY CHAPTER. Doesn't teach what's in book. GO TO EVERY CLASS and TAKE DETAILED NOTES. He tells stories to illustrate points, take notes on all aspects of stories, he tests on them!
Karlins is hillarious. He should be a stand-up comedian rather than a professor. His lectures don't tie in at all with the text. He should write his own textbook to go with his lectures and the class would be a hit! Very funny man. He cares about his students.
This was the best class i've ever taken. Going to class is entertaining. The teacher is so funny and you actually learn things through his stories. You will easily pass this class if you show up, take good notes, and read the books.
This is an awesome class, and a great professor. Prof Karlins is a great lecturer. Classes are short, no more than an hour or so for what should be a 3 hr class. Exams are 25% lectures and 75% questions from the book readings. He curves like a madman, 20% of the class is guaranteed an A, 30% B's, so just do better than the guy next to you.
MY FAVORITE CLASS! Karlins is SO funny! I took the 3hour lectures on friday...who wants to go to class on fridays? But I actually looked forward to this class bc he makes the lectures very entertaining and classes are usually only an hr and a half long. The test are average...you must read the book and take notes at the lectures. An easy B+
Mr. Karlins is a great teacher. He's extremely funny and talks Alot! As long as you read the book and take notes on everything he says..you will do fine. A Must is to keep up the Reading of The Chapters--He doesn't teach on the book-YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
Prof. karlins is a great teacher! His lectures are very entertaining, he has a good sense of humor. You will never be bored in his class. As long as you read the book and attend the lectures and take notes you will do well.
He's hilarious
He is definitely very knowledgeable, entertaining and FUNNY! He tells stories in class but u have to pay attention because he will ask about them in the exam. U MUST READ THE BOOK! His EXAMS are mostly BASED OFF THE BOOK! He also does a CURVE so you will end up with a decent grade. Not recommended if u want a class where teacher actually teaches..
Dr. Karlins is a great professor. He's very knowledgeable and entertaining. Go to lecture, read the books, take notes, and study -- that's all you need for an A in this class. I wish my major courses were this easy!
I think Karlins has a lot to teach. Unfortunately, his approach to the course left me with a bad taste. The lecture is based on stories of his past. You can learn much here. But his exams are based off of the text that he doesn't teach you from. The exams tries to apply the information from the text but Karlins gives you no guide to study from.
Karlins was an awesome professor. He is very entertaining and actually teaches useful material. No mandatory homework and decent tests. Definitely recommend!
Class was easy and somewhat fun! His stories were entertaining he?s kind of like the kooky uncle you just listen to and silently shake your head at his craziness! Read his book, memorize the syllabus, go to class! 35% of test questions come from his kooky stories, the rest come from the book!
lots of intersting stories, pretty easy if you come to class all the time
AWESOME CLASS! His energy really fuels the class. Pay close attention his stories. Memorize every detail. Especially the details from Romancing the clock. He wants you to know some of the stuff out of the syllabus for the first test. I got an A. For test question coming from the text he doesn't go too much into detail basic definition & some charts
You have to be able to read the material and study yourself. Professor's lectures are useless. Can't believe he is paid to waste students time. This should just be an online course if the professor isn't going to teach.
Awesome class. Interesting guy. I hate to read but actually read his entire book. Very useful and helpful for your LIFE...not just more pointless "school work". A class on how to live a better life. Loved it
Easy class. Along as you go to class, take great notes, read both books, and make sure you stay awake during class. The most annoying thing you will find is that the exams are basically an attendance test and seem to have nothing to do with Business Management and more about Life Management (what the professor likes to talk about). GO TO CLASS!!!
What in the world is this?! i hope this professor does no call his teaching! He is horrible if u are great at remembering the textbook then u will be fine. he grades on a two grade curve because his test r just that ridiculous! I barely passed his class. In his class a F is a C but do not be fool it is extremely hard to get that F.No STUDY GUIDE!
Prof is whacked Class=Life about Dr. Karlins Time Management Theories and how you can learn to manage yourself in a successful workplace Tests are 30% lecture and 70% book You have to read everything in the chapters bc anything can be on test. No study guide. Class is mandatory to get a good grade. Cancels class on short notice and doesnt use email
Must attend lectures. Tests consists of lectures and few chapters of text book. Real easy to pass class. Cancels class with short notice and doesn't use technology at all. Lectures are interesting and everyone learns something. If you want an easy grade with no work but a lot of reading this class is for you! 40% of class gets A's!!
This class takes a personal approach to managing others. His book was very informative and I have recommended it to people that are in careers other than business. Textbook isn't needed to pass, but it helps if you want an A because some questions are within the text. Going to class makes a difference even if it feels like a waste sometimes.
Awesome teacher, hilarious as hell. One of my fav. profs at USF thus far. Somehow relates everything to sex and gambling. Read HIS book CLEARLY and read the textbook. Write down EVERYTHING he says, you'll be fine.
I walked into this class thinking I would stomp it to hell. I really paid no attention to studying because I read the reviews online and listened to how EASY the class was. This class is EASY, but do not be fooled into thinking that you are guaranteed to fall in the 40% A category. (Everyone has that mindset). READ and attend class and you'll do OK
Must know his book for 1st exam. For an A, attend all classes and/or get permission to record lectures. Sign up for the textbook website - it helps with studying prior to tests. Prof. has great stories to keep your interest but take good notes. Study the syllabus - on exam too. TA's are very helpful.
Good professor, the class is interesting and he makes it fun. However, he doesnt cover the book in class at all so you gotta learn the concepts urself plus the lectures.Read his book and take notes in the stories he tells. Took it in the summer, class is supossed to be 4 hours he teaches 4 one and a half only.Only need bout 73 to get an A.
Very easy to get an "A": just show up, take detailed notes, and read the dang book, which, by the way, is the most driest, dullest, prolix book I ever read in my life. I liked his lectures. He was very nice to me when I came to his office and called his home phone. A lot of exam questions come from the companion website--so do go there to practice.
Don't think u can just get notes from someone else and not have to go to class. His questions are cleverly written, asking things u would never even think to write down in ur notes. Only the 1st exam has a lot of lecture questions. For exam 2 & 3, study only the textbook. The book website is your friend. Remember names of ppl mentioned in lectures.
Excellent Professor and, thanks to his verry liberal curve, an easy 'A' if you attend class, take notes and read the rather boring text. He does not lecture from the text at all, but will test you on almost all of it. But this shouldn't be an issue if you simply read the thing! Loved the class! His lectures are both funny and useful- a great class!
I had a very hard time because he likes to add a bunch of stuff about himself that was at best,TMI!I thought it was funny that the required text was his own and was dry compared with his lectures. It was very difficult for me to do well on his tests because the content was so broad and infinite.I get As normally but barely managed a C in his class.
Summer term - 2 exams. First was 20% from lecture, 40% from his own book, and 40% from textbook. Lecture questions are tricky, take really good notes: names, moral of the story, etc Second exam was 25% lecture and rest textbook. Know definitions and use textbook website. Many questions on test are exactly as found online...worth the $10!
Interesting guy, definitely read his book for the first test, and the text for the others. You have to attend class, there are many questions on what he talks about. Somewhat fun class, he tells alot of good relevant stories
Professor Karlins' lectures are very good/easy to listen to. He often goes on (often funny) tangents, but it helps a lot when the lecture is nearly 4 hours long. I would take another class by him he offered another class.
This guy is either high, or full of s**t, makes you buy his book that is totally useless. Doesn't teach out of the real text book. Tells stupid stories about his turds. Also he wrote in his book that he taught Bob Dylan how to play guitar.
You must be very self-motivated to do well in this class. He does not lecture on the textbook but will Test on it. Attendance is important and will make or break your grade because the lectures and stories are a big part of the exams.
Definetly take his class.Read his book throughly and take good class notes.Letcures were very interesting & held my attention. You must go to class, you cant just get the notes. Use the study materials online. If you read his book, study the online material for the other book and take good notes, it will be an easy A.Only need about 70% to get an A
He does not lecture on the text but it is a large part of his exams so make sure you read his book & study the vocab. and online resources for the other book. Great teacher! Extremly funny! I really enjoyed his class and would recommend him to anyone!
He does not discuss ANY of the material in the book, I mean NOTHING. yet you are required to read all the chapters. His tests are probably 75% from the book, 25% material from his lectures. He tells a lot of extensive stories that COULD be summed up in 2 minutes but he drags them out to 20, and then will ask you what the point of X story was on exa
He's a great professor. Top 20%=A,30%=B,40%=C. Buy both books, his book and the text and read thoroughly. I also bought the extra stuff ($15) on the text website and it REALLY helped on the tests. Take detailed notes in the lectures. Had him for the 10week class w/2 tests. Got a B with good effort.
Many people in the class complained about his teaching. You have to sit and listen to his relentless story telling which has nothing to do with the subject we were there to learn just so you can pick out their name in the exam is ridiculous. I felt like it was a huge waste of my time.
Class is very easy. Show up to class and take notes on his stories. Def read the little book. I didn't even bother reading the big textbook and still managed an "A" in the course (10 weeks/2 exams/opt final) because of the HUGE curves he gives (20ish pnts). Didn't even have to take the final.
I think his class was easy- a lot of common sense, because you are learning about managing people. Read the little book he wrote "Romancing the Clock" its half of your first test-good read about moral/ethics. Study for tests and thats it. I got an A.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I took it over the summer and we met once a week. He is a funny teacher and will keep your interest but he quizzes you on every little thing he says, so take good notes. Read the book and then read it again, also read his book thoroughly! Good advice but make sure you know for the tests.
Well, the first day I came into class I thought I was taking the same class as my friends did the semester before, however soon after I found out he changed his whole criteria and grading system this semester. I had Dr.Karlins for the Spring 2010 and I would suggest you not to take him, unless you are a GREAT public speaker. First, he doesn't teach
Apparently the university has removed him from the mass lectures (possibly as retribution for a pending lawsuit that he has with the school). He never lectured for a single minute! The entire course was student presentations (indiv & group). Tests were open-book essays and fairly easy. I would also advise finding another prof for this course.
I went into this class believing that I was going to take the great professor that I has heard about. I felt something wrong when I looked at his new revised syllabus. Apparently to be a professor you do not have to teach. He did not lecture material or explain a term once. We taught the class. Only way to get feedback is if you call him at home.
Horrible class, set no standards for the presentations, class was worthless, should have gotten easy A, with lack of standards and open book exams. Horrible teacher.
He never once lectured. Your grade is 2 essays which are easy, received an A on both and didn't even open the book. However, you have 2 speeches, individual and group. He NEVER once said we could not use note cards, he gave me a C for using note cards. Doesn't clarify on what he wants. Came out with a B, should've had an A. He's getting old!
Awesome prof the only one you won't be fighting off sleep through. The way he draws life stories and brings them into the lesson is very unique
This guy is THE worst professor at USF! He only talks about his life stories, he never talks about the class material. Never once we opened the book, and the exams we solely based on this material. Marvin Karlins should be out of USF asap!
Dr Karlins class is an extreme waste of time. He NEVER teaches, ever! He gives us tests on the book, 5 chpts each test & his dumb stories he tells in class. We have done nothing dealing with Management other than managing to waste time. Worst class Ive ever taken. Wont take him again & definitely would NOT recommend his class. Avoid at all costs.
This class is the biggest waste of time/money in my 3 years at USF so far. Halfway through the semester and Karlins hasn't lectured on anything relevant YET, besides his ridiculous stories which have nothing to do with the subject. 3 Tests based solely on text and are HARD, questions are from test bank, plus a 60 min group presentation. Terrible
Professor Karlins is by far my favorite professor at USF!The stories he tells are interesting and funny and DO have to do with what he is talking about! ALl the idiots who complain about his stories...they would apparently rather have their heads shoved into a text book. He had a really interesting life & I enjoyed learning from his experiences!
Prof. Karlins is by far my favorite professor! His stories are VERY interesting and there is A LOT to be learned from them! All the idiots who complain about them would apparently rather have their heads shoved into text books. Honestly if I am graduating into the real world, I want to hear about other people's experiences & learn from them!!!
Everyone that complains that Karlins just tells stories doesn?t get it. The stories reference the material in an interesting and memorable way. If you are the type that wants a professor to read you a book and test you on it, then don?t take him. If however, you have somewhat of a brain and can understand the meaning of his stories and how they
HE is the worst professor in the college of business. Because of a lawsuit with the college, he decide to hold class but not teach. so he has is students teach their own version of the chapter. it was a complete waste of time. Tests were on trivial facts from reading that no one could remember unless they memorized the book. he should be fired
DO NOT take his small class. Biggest waste of my time and money ever! I'm sure he's a nice guy in general, but he does NOT TEACH!!! Then he proceeds to test you on material we never went over, ever, making you read the whole book on your own time. I'm all about using textbooks, but he NEVER once went over ANYTHING from it! COULD have been easy...
HE DOES NOT TEACH! You read the book and get tested on really hard material. If you're good at that, then take the class. He has good stories, but they have nothing to do with the book or class. Not once did he refer anything to the book. He is a really terrible, crazy, teacher. He needs to be fired. DONT TAKE THE CLASS.
Dr.Karlins doesn't teach anymore, it's unfortunate because when he used to care he was a quality teacher in Principles of Management. Now he is useless, the textbook will be your teacher and the class consists of 45 student presentations which need to be 20 minutes. Be ready for that, it's a pain. I read the book completely and got A's on exams.
Something is going on where he has a vendeta with the school so he refuses to actually teach the class! He does almost nothing and he should be fired or dissiplined or forced to apologize to all of us. AAWWFFUULL!! I want my money back!!!
He does nothing. it makes me mad somethings teachers with Tenure think they can just sit down and do nothing. he sleeps. doesnt say a word about the book. dont waste your money on this guy
I have had Prof Karlins for multiple classes. From what others are saying his class style has changed. He no longer test on his stories but straight from the book and then curves the test. There is one individual project presentation on a novel he assigns. There is a total of 3 exams, final is considered the make up. He is hysterical.
If you aren't a fan of attending class, do not take this course. You will miss half the material on the test. Half is from his lectures, half is from the textbook (which he DOESN'T cover in class). You need the book. He talks about him self A LOT. Overall, the class isn't that hard.
Worst Teacher.. He likes to speak about himself and Dont explain anything about the textbook or Management at all.. The test are awful and hard. This could be the worst teacher I had ever have!
STAY AWAY. He is the worst professor I've had my entire college career. You have to buy "his" book as well as the actual textbook from the class. He won't mention ANYTHING about the textbook and he will definitely test you on it. His classes are pointless, all he talks about is "love and compassion" you won't learn anything business related.
Take someone else if possible. He's horrible. You have to go to class, half test questions are from his lecture. Other half of test is from the book that he doesn't teach, not once.. You have to teach yourself. People pass because of the huge curve he has to give. Avoid him!
Karlins is NOT that bad. I took his once a week night class. He's entertaining, kind of quirky. Always has a vid to show. He does not teach the management book you do have to read and learn that on your own. His lectures are straight from the book he wrote. Its not that hard, just read the chapters assigned and go to his lectures and you'll do fine
Not a challenging course, just a complex and non-impactful teaching style. Two required text that are needed and both your tested on. He only lectures on his personal text and not the actual course text. All I recommend is if you can choose another professor online or at another campus, highly recommend it ...
Karlins is not bad at all. I actually enjoyed going to his class because he teaches management that is relevant to the REAL WORLD. People complain because he does not teach the book, which is true, but if students read it like they were supposed to they would get an A or B. His book is helpful too.
This class is easy for the most part. Make sure you attend class because you'll be tested off the lectures. Also will be tested on life management 101 and Modern Management 12e.. so read both books. As long as you go to class, take notes and read both text books you will get at least a B. Exams are hard but is curved heavily
Don't take this professor, he is not good. I dind't teach, not provide the material for the class, no explanation. Only give chapters by chapters to study, one book don't have any sens. He is not good professor, don't take him.
Never want to give any help to students. He always said the policy of the college does not allow him to help students.Very bad professor never seen at all.
This class is pure reading comprehension. EVERYTHING (even though his notes and assignments are pointless) will be on the class. You MUST go to class to pass because his test questions test whether you've been to class, not what a specific term is about.
If you're a competent student that can attend classes, you should have no problem getting an A. The lectures aren't boring, and the last few were very, very interesting with practical and relevant use to management later in life. But he's super strict with exam policies- his syllabus is scary. But overall, a good class and easy A.
He gives a lot of useless speeches, he was even jealous that Bob Dylan became famous because according to him, he taught him to play the guitar!!!
Took Karlins for Management and his lectures were interesting. He went off on tangits, and the tangits would be on the tests. Remember names and listen to his stories and read your book and you'll be fine.
His lecture its interesting to listen, such as those funny stories he made up. But unfortunately, most of the information its useless for the test, and his lecture has nothing related to the textbook. He do not give guild line or information for the test at all, just tell you the test contains 25% from his book and the lecture, 50% from textbook.
If you go to class and read the books, the exams are incredibly easy. He tells you on the 1st day of class that he does not lecture from the book, and that half of the exam will be questions about the book. So, of course, you NEED to read the book on your own. I like that he doesnt lecture from the book. His stories are more interesting.
I don't know what his problem is. He says he doesn't want us to waste money on textbooks but makes us by his textbook. He doesn't lecture on any of the reading and just talks about himself for 3 hours and you are tested on his life and how to love. I joined to learn management not about some professor and loving things.
He makes you sit and watch movies in almost all the classes, tests you on it, then rambles on about nothing for an hour and a half. His class is easy, but you have to do all the studying yourself bc he wont teach you much. If there's another professor you can take for this class (that's to say if you want to learn) I would recommend taking it.
Quite literally the worst professor I've ever had. He is an embarrassment to the business school. His own book that is required for the class says it all really - with multiple spelling mistakes and obviously made up stories in it. His lectures are completely random and unprofessional, and totally lack structure. Avoid this professor at al costs.
This class is an easy A. His lectures are pretty funny and he's a nice guy. My only complaint is that you cannot e-mail him or the TA's, you have to call him at home for any questions. How I got an A: go to class. Read the entire small book. Read the vocabulary words in the larger book. Easy as pie.
He is not hard. class is not mandatory but you need to go. his lectures are on the exam (meaning the stories he tells during class, including the films he shows). half the exam is the text the other half is his book and his lecture. he is funny and my parents had him as a teacher long ago so he has been there forever. Go to the Lectures!
Probably not the instructor for everyone. His lectures are not based on material in the book. However, they are things he has learned in his life and shares them with us. I enjoyed listening to the things he had to share. Would recommend only for people taking this class.
Easy class if you read the book. It's curved. The lectures have nothing to do with the book. You will watch movies and do in class activities during half of the period and lecture for the rest. He does not cover the textbook at all and it is 50% of each exam. This course is more of a self help/life advice class than a course on management.
LOVED Dr. Karlins. He was very interesting and very passionate about his teachings. He genuinely cares for his students and is always there to help. Tests are super easy if you read the chapters in the two textbooks and attend lectures. I thought he was a great professor and I would love to take him again if he taught another class!
He loves to lecture on his life theories on management based on his experiences but he does not teach you what is in the book AT ALL. Take him if you want to hear about his life and study independently for an A.
Breath of fresh air. I love his stories! I'm so glad he didn't just ramble from the text he actually made a business class interesting.
Possibly one of the worst teachers I have ever encountered. I agree that he is entertaining hwoever, he does not teach from the textbook, he only tests from the book. His tests are extremely difficult. He is a Ph.D psychologist, and that is what he uses to teach his class, psychology. In my opinion, he isn't qualified to teach management!DON'T TAKE
Highly recommend Dr. Karlins. He's an interesting man. This class is an EASY A. He does not lecture from the book, but he tells you that up front. I got an A just from going to class and spending a very minimal amount of time reading the book. The exams were so easy that it was funny. Nice curve on the exams too.
He is helpful with students; however, his class is pointless.I attend every class, however,I have failed his tests because NOTHING from his class lectures are on the test.He uses his book that relates nothing to management for the test.At least a study guide, but nope. So,I would not recommend this teacher at all, unless you like learning by yourself.
Easy class. As long as u take notes from his lectures(which are really fun stories not boring dry factual PP)and read the textbook youll get an A. The information is very easy to understand (its management not rocket science). I've made A's on both test so far this semester and you dont have to take the final if youre happy with your grade. Awesome
Took Dr. Karlins class about 2 yrs ago, loved it. Best professor! I read the reviews that complain how he talks about "psychology & thats not mgmt" Well u guys are in for a rude awakening when u actually get a real job! Mgmt is all about how u handle people. Thats "psychology 101" He will teach u the skills u need to be a leader not just a crap mgr
25 from test 25 from lectures 50 from textbook. read the back of the small book. remeber names. read the textbook carefully mostly definitions.
the text book isn't use in class, but you have to REALLY need to read it for exam purposes, it's a easy book to read and understand. VERY good class if you're interested to become an effective/GOOD Manager, he gives you great tips how to handle people. I loved it and I'll take another class with him
Great professor. Attendance is REQUIRED! half the test is terms from text, other half is questions about lectures and professors book. 3 Exams, nothing else. Can pass with very little effort.
Very interesting class. Really enjoyed the lectures and always had a good laugh. Highly recommend
This professor is really good, the class is unlike anything else i have taken, you must read both books and attend every class it will all be on his exams. How I got an A: went to class, took good notes, read both texts. It is not hard at all anyone can pass
Easy class. Attend class, take notes, read both books (especially the vocab from the text book). Didn't like the fact that I basically taught myself. This class was more Life management than Business management.
Could possibly be the very WORST professor in the whole College of Business, maybe even the whole university. Rambles, stupid stories, lectures that have nothing to do with the reading. Avoid, avoid, avoid
Great Professor. He is very interesting and wants students to think about management in a very psychological way.
Horrible teacher. His test comes from 3 different sources, covers a lot of material and he doesn't teach based on the book. Avoid if possible. His lectures are interesting but only 15 questions from his lectures will be asked on the test.
Great professor. I loved his class and help me to try be a better person and a better manager to my subordinates. Thank you Dr. Karlins
Easy as long as you follow his syllabus, your grade is weighed only on 3 tests but the grades depend on the average of the entire class. Therefore, pay attention to his lectures, obtain the textbook and his book from Pro-Copy.
I LOVED Professor Karlins. He was hilarious. He has a mandatory book that he wrote and a textbook. 50% of the exam is from lectures and 50% is from the textbook and his book. His book was a great read and this class was super interesting. Always watched movies and talked about meaningful stuff. Wish he taught other courses here at USF! He's awesome
Professor Karlins is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's full of life, loves his job, and takes his role as a Professor very seriously. He wants nothing more than to see each one of his students succeed and provides all the tools necessary to do that. Talented man, amazing Professor, and if you just listen to him, you'll do great.
Funny guy with interesting stories, but very hard tests, especially if you don't hve the books or miss a class because he lectures on stuff he says. Like if you miss a word, then you're risking a question wrong on the tests. Whatever you do, avoid this class.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Great concepts on Management in the textbook, but the class never discusses, nor covers anything related to the text. The tests should be about the main concepts covered in the text, lectures, and his book. They are nitpicky, and have little to do with main concepts. Tests are curved but with one false move, you'll end up down an entire grade.
This may be the easiest class I have taken so far. Grade consists of 3 exams; exams are 50% textbook, 25% prof's book, 25% lecture. His lectures do not cover the books at all, and he is a bit longwinded, but he makes sure you are tuned in at the key points of his stories. Go to class and read the books you'll get an A. Especially after the curve.
What a joke of a class. The class should be called "Principles of Life Management" with the way he teaches it. If you enjoy watching movies from the 1930s-1980s that have absolutely nothing to do with Management, this is the class for you. The way he speaks through his microphone in lecture burns my ears. Good luck because no one else teaches this.
It was more of a "Life Principals" class. He would get on long rants about stupid stuff that happened in class. SOME of the material was helpful, but little had to do with business. His book was a good read, but it is mainly about how to be happy in life. His class is graded on a bell curve; so start studying!
The tests are very difficult and Karlins doesn't offer any kind of help. The lectures have NOTHING to do with the class or textbook. No assignments other than tests and no extra credit opportunities. You're on your own when it comes to tests because no study guide is provided. This is the worst class I've taken at USF so far.
Karin's has a very good inspirational book that accounts for 25% of each test; however, the other 25% is based on his very LONG and not-so-interesting lectures, and the rest of the 50% of the exam is based on the textbook that must be self-taught. I am an A student and received a C in this class. This class is a freaking joke to USF business
Don't listen to these 19 year olds who surf Facebook during class saying he is hard. Show up every day, study the terms, and read his book (it's actually pretty interesting). You'll get an A. You don't teach for 40 years because you hate it, and Karlins attitude shows he enjoys it.
Received an "A" and didn't learn a thing about management. Fine by me because I'm not a management major but I'd be angry if I had to build on the principles taught in this class. A lot of self teaching to pass the tests. Lectures are drawn out and too much time is spent focused on his teaching assistant rather than teaching the class. Avoid.
His class isn't horrible, but his rules are ridiculous. Don't get "penalty points" because they can do some major damage to your grade and they do not care! Read his book, textbook, and listen to his stories. But watch out, don't make any mistakes because you will be penalized.
He is a very caring teacher, his lectures can be long but he seems to care a lot about the subject. He does a great job at trying to keep you entertained during the class. Go to the class and focus mainly on the vocab from the book and you will do fine. I really enjoyed this class and teacher!
Least favorite class possibly ever. Dr. Karlin's texts DO NOT match up to his lectures. Read the chapter summary in the back of your Management test and read his personal book and you will fair the exams just fine. Don't even think about using your cell phone or he will kick you out of class. If you are from Pasco County be ready for some hate.
This class is theoretically an easy A, except for the fact that he grades on a curve. Your grade is more or less based on the rest of the class. It's like a group project & you don't know who's contributing what & you can't overcompensate.
Karlins tries to use "real-life" experiences to teach about management. He makes you buy his book at Pro-Copy but its cheaper at BookHolders. You will need to the textbook to review for the exams. Attendance isn't mandatory but whatever he goes over in lectures will be on the exam so I would recommend going or making friends to get notes.
The class was a miserable experience. He talks about avoiding "excessive stress". Yet, he makes his exams excessively stressful with his "penalty system". Be sure to pay attention to EVERY minute detail in his book and the lectures. Study the vocab from the back of the textbook. Avoid if possible.
Took him in the Fall 14. He was a great professor. One of the easier classes I had. If you show up to class, pay attention, and just read his book and the key terms of the text you will get a good grade. I loved his lectures and it was interesting. The tests were not bad at all. Honestly, this grade helped to boost my GPA.
Avoid. The lectures are his stories that you have to connect to Management. He doesn't go over any of the readings in class so please read the textbook and assigned reading book.
If you do what you're supposed to and take the time to write good responses to his exam questions, then you'll get either an A or B in the class. Don't be late or miss class. Don't listen to the complainers - they're just looking for an easy A without doing the work.
easy class. just make sure you don't miss class or show up late. the tests are REALLY easy AND open book. my only concern was the group project because some people can't pull their weight but it turned out very good. I would take him again.
About LIFE management. Lectures are long and dry. He tries to be comedic but the length is exhausting. His stories are strange and makes for good test questions. Keep up with the text. His personal book is good and short. Whatever you do, go to every single class, and stay the whole class- that probably is the most difficult part.
3 Exams (or 4 if you want to take the final). Each exam is 25% from his book (which is a good read), 25% from his lectures (which are good stories) and 50% from the textbook. He doesn't go over the text in class, so you're on your own with that, but everything you need is in the back. Tests are graded on a curve, but if you show up you'll be fine
Waste of time.2 books required: He doesn't teach from them, but does test on them. Anything he says, no matter how ridiculous, is up for testing. He lectures on case studies- you're required to be in groups to discuss, and he disappears from class during discussions. No technology of ANY kind allowed in sight. This professor is just coasting along.
Overall awful teacher in my opinion. His lectures are mainly stories and case studies that loosely relate to principles of management and while his stories are interesting, he gets annoying with them. He never actually lectures about real facets of management in class: you have to look in the textbook for that. Would not recommend, take it online.
Overall not a great professor. Content of course is simple and fairly easy yet this class is not an easy A. It is clear that he does not care about his students and is unwilling to help them (even in emergency situations). One of my least favorite professors at USF.
Took a semester to cover 6case studies. Class consists of him passing out a case study, getting into your groups, talking about the case(while he leaves the room for half the class) He makes you buy 2 separate text books, one of which has no correlation to management. GET READY TO TEACH YOURSELF as we never used the book in class. I paid for this?
Cares more about his life management stories than teaching actual management principles. There were only 3 tests, none were curved, and most content were from the two books (never discussed in class -making it difficult to know what was most important to learn). Everyone gets the same grade on group project no matter what. Nice guy, awful teacher.
He doesn't cover any material from the text book in class, leading to difficult test. We learned more about his personal life stories then actual management principles. Beware of the group project, everyone gets the same grade. What a waste of a semester. Feels like I didn't learn anything. Which is because he doesn't actually teach...
Class 400 points. Only grades are 3 tests and 45 min group presentation. Miss more than 3 days & your grade drops significantly. Everyone in your group gets the same grade on presentation. Tests have random questions that have nothing to do with management. Do not recommend taking. Worked my butt off and got an 80%. TAKE ONLINE WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
He has great knowledge and experience in management, however, he does the bare minimum. This professor is just cruising along, doing as little as possible to get by. His tests are a nightmare with his points deducted system.
Literally was the worst prof I've ever taken at USF. He didn't teach anything only told stories the whole time, docked my groups presentation grade because of points he didn't personally agree with. Tells you nothing that is on the tests from 2 books, i basically taught myself and learned NOTHING from him. I want my money back for this class.
Very nice guy and definitely knowledgeable on the subject. I was not a fan of the course structure. We never discussed the book content but were tested on 15 chapters and the book he wrote. He's harsh when grading group presentations so I hope you get a good set of partners. Go to class, read, enjoy his babbling, and for the love of God no phones!!
This class you have to work for the grade you want but overall is a good professor. The material is more life management but everything was interesting and entertaining.
Study the vocabulary for the tests and you will be fine. You must also pay attention to the details in his written book and his lectures. Overall, not a hard class if you put in 3 hours for the exam.
This class was awful. I enjoyed the material but his lectures were just life stories that you get tested on, so make sure you write down his sister's name, etc. Most of time time we did irrelevant case studies that took up the week. Grade based on a group project and 3 exams. Read the book cause the exams are half from text, which he doesn't cover.
Karlin's is one of the worst professors i have ever had. He has no concern of the students. When we asked him why he didn't teach us the exam material during class he responded "its not my job to teach you the material, i am here to teach you general life lessons" ... just to give you an idea of the idiocy you will encounter in Karlin's lecture.
Karlins is an average professor, as others have said he teaches his own material that's closer to life management than actual management. You will have to read the textbook and a smaller book he wrote by yourself. I just glanced at the bolded words and them models in the textbook and I got a decent enough grade.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Does not tech any exam material in class. WE watched barbershop quartet for one of our class periods . Another, on refrigerators on fire. What does that have to do with Management.
I pulled all-nighters and studied really hard and still have to retake the class. :((
Take online instead! The material itself wasn't difficult but the only grades were 3 tests and a group project. Lots of test questions were irrelevant such as names of people in his book or which word goes with which. Didn't learn much and lowered my GPA for an easy class. Many kids were failing the tests and he did nothing to help grades.
Professor Karlins was the worst teacher I have ever had so far. The class was based only on 3 tests and a group project. No study guides and just tells you to read the book. And there is 2 books, so you are reading 10 chapters total for each of his tests. He doesn't teach in class, assigns groups and expects you to learn it yourself. Grades hard!
Karlins is not the kind of professor I had hoped to find at a big uni. The class is graded off of 3 tests. The tests fluctuate from random names he mentions in stories to actual management information in the book. You wont pass without both of his books, but a quick read through the chapters and you'll be all right.
If you came in class 1 min late, be ready that he will take points off your final grade. If you didn't memorize his friend/family or random name he mentioned during the lecture - you will not pass the exam. 3 exams consist of random questions from textbook and his own book, no study guide, so you better memorize the vocabulary and names.
Karlins is the worst professor I've had at USF. Lectures are pointless, except for the names he drops that will appear on exams. Memorize your textbook AND his book because he picks details from 300+ pages of reading to use on his exams. There's no reason I should perform better in upper-level accounting courses than this course!!!
Quite honestly one of the most useless professors at USF. Makes you read from a book that he wrote. It's supposed to be stories that teach you about management, but it is really just an autobiography with loosely tied in "teachings". You have to write down literally every single thing he says in class or you won't pass the exams. TLDR: TAKE ONLINE
Seriously the worst professor I have ever taken. I took him for marketing management and I got a C-. Yet, I took Stats 2 the same semester and got an A. In all honesty stats 2 was easier because at least I knew what I was supposed to be learning. Marvin's test's were like "what's name of the dog that looked in the water in his book?".
He lectures and has a textbook. Your test is about 10 questions from the lecture and the rest from the textbook. Lectures are never relevant to the textbook and you have to guess from the 5 chapters (aka 60+pages) what will be on the test.
Only grades in class are tests and group project! The tests are a little difficult; highly recommend going to class and reading the book (also link for online practice quizzes and flashcards through book help on canvas). He is a funny professor with good lectures! 40 minute group presentation project at the end and one 10 pt extra credit option.
Very textbook oriented Sage publishing and online is extremely helpful with flash cards and quizzes Lots of personal stories in class which are important Best advice is sage publishing for passing the tests
He's a nice person but the exams are based on lectures and the book which we don't even open ONCE in class. If you happen to take him, you're kind of on your own trying to know what you'll be tested on. He has stories that he uses to relate to topics but you'll most likely be asked a question about it on the exam too /:
Marv is disrespectful but also tells you what he expects from you during class. Make yourself known to him, introduce yourself and be respectful and he is more inclined to round your grade at the end of the semester. Theres no room to argue grades with him. Study both books and online tools like crazy to pass exams
If you don't do well in this class, you simply didn't try or expected an "easy A". Professor Karlins is a gift to USF. He is extremely caring, intelligent, and kind. He wants you to walk out of his class as a better human being. There is a lot of reading (boohoo), and the lectures are designed to give you information you wouldn't find in a textbook
I honestly don't understand why Karlins doesn't have higher ratings. He's an amazing professor and is passionate about teaching. You will need to read the material to do well on the tests. But if you actually read everything the tests are very straight forward. This is an easy class if you don't slack off.
I wish I could take Karlins for the rest of my management courses. He is by far the best professor Ive had at USF. Yes, you have to read, but were in college guys. His test are very fair (if youre prepared). If you work hard, youll get an A. He actually bought back the royalties to his book so we could use it in class. AMAZING book on life.
This Professor was AMAZING. You HAVE to read the book and for the exams, I recommend studying some flashcards or notes. The exams are easy so long as you put in some effort and his book on time management is actually a great read! He really cares about what he is teaching and is a fun and quirky guy.
After attending his first couple of classes, I thought the class would be a waste of time, but Karlins is honestly such an entertaining professor that cares about what he teaches. Take notes of his class lectures, study the flashcards from the link in the syllabus, read the procopy and its an easy A. Dont overthink it!
bad not recommend at all
Dr. Marv teaches lessons that extend beyond the textbook and into daily life. Lectures typically focus on one main theme per class and tests are based on his lectures, and the book(s) he assigns. If you want a class that is applicable to life outside the classroom, take this one seriously.
Absolute worst teacher ever! This is a teach yourself course, everything you learn is from the chapter readings. Professor never once held a live lecture, his 3 pre-recorded videos are at least 3 years old. Exams are old and outdated, some exam questions have nothing to do with current article readings, leaving you confused during exams. LAZY!
Worst professor ever. Class is based off of reading the textbook, reading his own personal book and articles he posts. He has a 3, 20 min prerecorded lectures, that are absolutely not enough to cover 14 chapters worth of content. Says he teaches for fun, but where did the teaching aspect go?
Hardest grader I ever had. He's terrible and extremely rude. Assignments are so vague and he is such a tough grader. Cannot stand him and hope he gets fired
Minimal effort is required for this class, but prof is a tough grader. 3 relatively easy exams, 3 short essays, a few discussion posts, and one big group project. The project itself wasn't too hard but it was graded very harshly. No weekly lectures or attendance points
Really easy course. Gives simple assignments every other week. There are 4 exams that are open notes and open book. However, he does not tolerate late assignments and will give no makes ups. Make sure every assignment is turned in on time to avoid a 0% for any.
easiest class ever. quick assignments take 20 min to write, 6pg paper was easy topic, fair grader, nothing proctored.
Super easy course. He has a funny teaching style. Don't sweat it.
Class assignments are graded by TAs who seem eager to get 'cred' with the professor by grading much tighter than most tenured professors! One long paper (8pages) and 4 exams. Not too hard.
Class is super easy with tons of extra credit available. All 4 tests are open book and really easy, the final paper is easy too nothing about this class is hard. The only issue I had was having to buy his book since some questions on the test are about his book.
It's an easy class, and he's a good professor. Assignments are due weekly. There are quizzes, exams, one 6-page paper that you're given 3 months to complete, and a few easy activities. Quizzes and exams are open book. He's easy on the grading as long as you complete mostly everything.
Such an easy course, usually a 250 word reflection every week (easy points), he offers extra credit throughout the semester, the toughest part is exams, which aren't that hard. Buy both books he requires because test answers come straight out of those textbooks and they're not things you can look up. It doesn't take much to get an A in this class.
The perfect class to take in the Summer term. Action assignments where you answer questions and only need to write 250 characters. The test requires both textbook and his book. The final paper is easy to do if you started early if not it didn't seem to matter as the rubric was quite simple. Respond within a few days regarding questions.
Professor was great! The course consists of exams, reflections and one research paper at the end of the course. I highly recommend taking this professor, he cares a lot about his students and loves what he does! There is also ways to earn extra credit as well throughout the course.
Super easy and super awesome class. Loved it, really was nice just to have a class i didnt need to stress over. There's one big paper and he gives you plenty of time to do it. There one assignment due a week and its normally pretty simple.
Super easy class, if you don't get an A I'm really questioning your abilities...Tests are super easy. The only textbook you need to buy is his Life Management 2.0 book which is less than $20. Assignments were easy too, simply just do them correctly to the instructions.
This professor grades unnecessarily hard for no reason. Midway through a semester right now and nobody has an A in the class. No proctored exams are nice but thats about it. Material is useful for future business careers but you can learn it with a different professor and do better. Beg yall to find a diff professor if you can.
Textbook required. Will not follow the rubric - you can follow it to a tee and gets feedback such as "Excellent!", but will only give you an A- on the paper regardless, with minimal feedback. Is not clear with expectations. Not a hard class, but seemingly impossible to get an A without being a mind reader. Too much tenure.
Great teacher, relatively straightforward. There's maybe 14 assignments for the entire semester, all of them can be completed in under an hour or two. Buy his 20$ textbook and read it or use it during the open notes exam, you'll need it. The assignments are actually interesting and have a lot of good information that makes you think and is useful.
I gave a lower rating due to the group project, it was difficult to meet up with people and record the presentation with it being an online class. Overall it was fine, I felt the grading on the study case assignments were a bit tough but once you got the hang of how he liked your responses to be, you got better grades each time.
Easy class just get both textbooks. The exams are open book so take advantage of that and you can easily pass. His own textbook is more of a self-help book that may make him come off as a bit egotistical but does still has some really good life tips. The reflections are mostly from exercises in his book, and the Final Paper was easy enough.
This class does not take up much time, and it is easy to get an A. You need to buy a book as 20% of the test questions come from there. The reflections are easy, and the rubric for the final paper (6 pages) is easy. Extra credit (3%) is provided. There is no reason to take this class in person, and you will not regret taking professor Karlins.
When grading he doesn't seem to follow a rubric. He just gives you whatever he wants. He gave me a bunch of Bs on my case studies and 19/20 on other assignments. His comments were either "excellent" or he would say I was missing something when it was clearly mentioned and explained in depth. Also, the group project was annoying since it's online.
Class was easy. Four exams (open book) and one paper and some smaller assignments. Buy his two textbooks as the exam questions come from both. Buy them online so you can search for words in the chapters when taking tests. Grade is dependent on which TA you get, most will take off points for no reason and not explain why. Very minimal work.
Easy class! The course consists of easy reflections to complete each week, four exams, and a paper due near the end of the course. Make sure to get the required textbooks! They help a lot with the exams which are open-book.
Make sure to get the textbooks, you'll need them for exams (which are open-book) and reflections. There's a paper due at the end of the semester which is straightforward and an extra credit assignment which I recommend getting done towards the beginning of the class. Overall an easy class!
This course is a super easy A. His exams are open book, there are a few reflection items, and one final paper that is very straightforward; he also offers 30 points of extra credit. I personally really liked his book and thought he gave great advice, I would highly recommend him over anyone else :)
Extremely easy class, interesting content, no lectures, all reading. I felt that I got to know him through his personal book, which I found more useful for life than textbook. All exams open book, both texts are required, as test qs are verbatim from them. Short reflections on TEDTalks, personal book activities, graded by TA, extra credit surveys.
Professor Karlins is very subjective with assigning written papers, the answer is supposed to be opinionated but if it is not a good enough opinion, your points get docked. Other than that his teachings were very insightful, and the course's material is very enjoyable and easy to understand.
The course is very fast-paced; if you take it in the summer, start your group project early. It is the most time-consuming aspect of the course. Grading relies heavily on case studies, and it is not easy to get perfect scores on those, so really try to think out of the box and have evidence to support claims. No Extra Credit is offered in summer!
Easiest class and professor at USF!! About every other week have 250 word paragraph due about a TEDtalk or activity. Two textbooks required- his and the course's. I stopped reading the course textbook because it's long and the exams are open book (so control-f), but you will need his book for assignments/exams. One 6-8 page final paper tho...
Super easy online class, he assigns a discussion or some type of small writing about a ted talk, video, or something in the textbook weekly. Exams are all open note and simple. One long essay at the end but its manageable, overall the class is great.
My favorite professor so far. Wrote his own textbook and uses that for the course. Overall really enjoyed his class. 3 open note exams online, and 1 assignment
Took this as an online course and it has gone great. Karlins is a great professor, there are very few assignments all year with 3 exams all open notes and 1 final paper which is a bit time consuming but not hard. On average about 1 assignment a week. He's a very great guy and fun to interact with.
This class is SUPER easy and has a very light work load. Exams are open notes and assignments are very easy. One long paper at the end of the semester but you have more than enough time to complete it. He makes you buy his book (YOU NEED TO BUY IT) but it is actually an interesting book.
Dr. Karlins is a good professor who knows much about the real world. One of the textbooks we used for the class was a book by him that discussed actions to take to live a happy life. There were no lectures for the class, but the lessons learned from the textbooks were helpful. I would retake him for another class.
Professor Karlins is a very nice teacher, he only sends a message every once and a while to make sure everything is going good. The class is really easy if you stay on top of things and do the work.
This class consists of 4 tests, 6 written reflections, 2 discussion boards, an 8-12 page final paper, and extra credit! This class is not too difficult, but you do have to buy 2 textbooks in order to succeed. You can use both textbooks on the tests (multiple choice). The hardest part was definitely the long final paper so start that early!
I took this all online over the summer. There are two textbooks, one of which is written by Karlins himself. The Karlins book specifically gives great life advice applicable outside of the classroom. Exams are open-book, open-note. Beyond that, there are some TED Talks and light assignments you'll do. Very manageable workload & competent professor.
I learned a lot more than I thought I would in this class...mainly from the book he wrote! Make sure to keep up with the assigned readings and you will be ok. I always tried to read ahead so I wouldn't get behind. I found that if I read the book and did a quick read over prior to taking the exams made the exams much easier.
Professor Karlins is wild. He's a very unique person with an interesting history. Like any class with hundreds of students, you don't really have much communication with the professor directly. But the class is really easy. Exams are open book, assignments are straightforward, there are no surprises. One of the easiest classes I took at USF.
Easy class with manageable workload. Professor Karlins' textbook is insightful, and exams are open-note. Unstuckstudy AI was a great study tool to supplement the course materials.
Do not take this professor at all cost please avoid ignore other students responses he is not understanding person at all DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS AT ALL AVOID AT ALL COST. Very rude thinks he is better than everyone and thinks he is a doctor. Having his name as a dr. Not good at all
The class setup and work was super easy for the most part, a total of 11 assignments on the semester with 3 open book open note not proctored exams. The grading can be a bit tough at times as he does take points off if missing little things. The big grade comes from a group project which he gives you 4 full months to do. Would def recommend taking!
His assignments are fine but he is not accommodating at all. In his syllabus he accepts no work unless religious holiday, and when i requested an extension ( 1 day ) he denied it. If your gonna accept late work , why lie about it on the syllabus.
I'm currently taking Principles of Management with Professor Karlins, and it's been one of the best classes I've had. The course is easy to follow and really engaging. Our assignments are based on the textbook, and we have four exams that are open book and open notes—plus, no Honorlock!
Open book and note exams, all multiple choice!!There are short writing assignments, where you watch a TED talk video then answer the questions, then a few based on the book he wrote (make sure you get his book, as you use it for assignments and there are questions from it on exams). One final paper, long, but gives good instructions. GREAT professor!!!
Simple class and amazing teacher. Awesome how the textbook uses is written by him. I hate reading but everything was interesting and very doable. I am a junior and he has definitely been my favorite professor.
Dr. Karlins only provides 2, 20 minute lecture videos throughout the course as he relies on each student's final group projects to have teach the entire course content right before the final exam via discussion board (each group covers a chapter). He did not like how my group recorded our project so he gave a 0 on thxgiving with 3 days to rerecord.
rude professor, no lecture videos, no resources, do not take online with him!!! find somebody else
only 2 assignments, 3 exams, and a group project. he provides very vague and subjective rubrics so you will always get points taken off of everything. for somebody who teaches a class about caring, respecting, and earning trust, he is EXTREMELY condescending and borderline rude in his announcements and assignment feedback comments. avoid karlins!
