Before I took this class I had such a passion for English. Afterwards, I found myself dreading writing a paper or reading a story. He is very smart! Almost to smart to be teaching. He doesn't explain in enough detail what he expects out of your papers, but when he returns them there is more red on the paper than what you had written.
I have always done well in english but after taking this class i am so glad it is my last strictly english class. He grades as if you are an english major and i once i get my essay back i can barely see my paper through all the red marks. Good conversation in class, not boring, but grades extremely harsh.
He is a nice guy and I believe he means well. But sometimes he is unclear and wants a lot of disscussion. However, alot of the things he wants you to read are pointless and hard to disscuss. He makes you write alot of little papers that boost your grade so its not bad. I felt like I was doing alot of work for a class that was a little waste of time
Pretty easy class overall... Allowed to mis 3 classes without it effecting your grade.. but you can't miss more than 6.. Avoid an early morning class if you can.. because the only bad thing about his class in my opinion is 1) He's a semi-hard grader 2) the morning classes are a Mind-f b'/c it's pointless. Overall.. decent and nice
Hard grader. I got Bs on every assignment but an A on two assignments he gave. Really focused on helping you improve your writing. Dedicated professor. Nerdy, quite humorous.
You do a lot of little papers, but nothing that is really hard. He will definitely make you a better writer. There is alot of discussion in class, but he is pretty funny so its not that bad. I really enjoyed this class, but be sure to get it around mid day so everyone is awake.
I really enjoyed this class. He is really funny and makes the class very involved. You do have to do a little work, but it isn't hard. You can even turn stuff in late and he's usua;;y chill abou it. He definately makes you a better writer/critical reader. You really need the book, as you discuss something from it everyday. TAKE THIS CLASS!
A really dynamic teacher, good discussions and easy to talk to, however he grades really heavy as if you were an English major, he expects a lot for a gened class.
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! This class was very easy. Readings were only required for in class discussions, no quizzes, tests, etc. Overall, there are 4 long papers and 5 short response papers. Not very much work to do but you will deifinitely come out of this class as a better writer.
Really great teacher. He is so funny and makes the class interesting. There aren't any tests in here. All of your grades come from papers that you have. There are only 4. This class was so easy. Please take Severson.
Severson is a pretty awesome professor. His class can get boring at times, but I would suggest taking him! Readings are "required" for class discussion but you can get by without doing them. Lots of little grades (weigh less on final grade). He helps you step by step on every assignment. Pretty easy teacher so TAKE HIM!
He's not bad, but he's not great. Class gets super boring. You MUST read the readings for the day or he'll punish the class by going over gramar. He's shy but once the semester goes on he becomes hilarious! He grades harshly on papers so if it isn't your thing, look elsewhere. I made my first C on a paper ever in this class.
He is a great teacher. Enjoys interaction with class and interesting debates. Class can get boring but he is very funny and down to earth. Instructions are clear and grades fairly. Highly recommended
Great Prof. Be prepared for class discussions based on assigned readings. STRICT attendance policy so don't plan to sit this one out. Papers are challenging but he is a good teacher and you will learn. Grading is very fair - more lenient on the short essays and responses, but stricter on the long papers. No tests but you will write a lot.
WONDERFUL TEACHER. I absolutely hated English class when I joined this class, but he has made me enjoy writing. Severson gives us interesting articles and topics to write about. He is also very open minded when it comes to class, and will not judge you.
He is a really good teacher, classic nerd persona. Be prepared to use the text book a lot but not so much the writers handbook. Im taking his next 1102 class because I do like being a student in there. Be prepared to talk and write quite a bit.
Absolutely love Mr. Severson. He's a great guy and a great teacher. There is a lot of work, but he is more than willing to help you. There is a lot of readings but if you keep up, you will be fine. (Don't show up to class if you didn't read!) Wonderful guy, wish I could have him again!
Best professor I have had in college. A great professor who will help you no matter what. Only assignments are papers, most are very simple. Uses youtube almost every day, very funny and an easy class to be in, I always enjoyed going. Fun class with a great professor!
Nice guy, reading is mandatory and so is attendance. His quizzes are a bit in depth so make sure you read carefully. The class isn't really too easy but you can get through it.
Attendance is mandatory, you can miss three days before it starts affecting your grade. Very easy grader; made B's in high school classes and have made high B's or low A's on all of his papers. Very helpful and very easy to understand. He is pretty funny later on in the semester
Such an easy class. 4 long papers and 10 short 400 word assignments. As long as you read and do the short assignments you will get an A. Likes to call people out who have not read so be careful. Attendance is mandatory and strictly enforced.
Dr. Severson is a wonderful teacher. He does a great job of letting the students run the discussion, but keeping them on track. His class is so easy. If you show up, participate and do the reading before class I really don't see how you can not get an A.
Very consistent and willing to help any student if asked.
Very challenging class but if you do the work it isn't bad. He is always willing to help and answer questions. Tough grader but as long as you meet the word count you should be fine. A lot of writing assignments, one due almost every class period but they're not all long assignments mostly 300-500 words except for major assignments.
Tough grader in all assignments; must have a strong argument. Must read required reading for class. Guidelines can be vague. Book choice of Outliers, however, was excellent. I enjoyed the book.
He is very helpful. You have to read the books or he will call you out in class. Other than that the assignments are super easy. I only got a B cause I wasn't trying as hard as I should.
I've taken two of Severson's classes and I've loved both of them. I wish he taught more upper level classes. I love his teaching style and the texts we've gone over in class I've actually remembered. Quiz every week, but easy material. Read the book and you'll pass. Midterm, final, paper, that's it. Super easy, super great class.
He was my professor for my first class at KSU back in Fall 2012. He had such an influence on me that I am now an English major. If you aren't a bum simply trying to slide by in the back of the classroom, you'll love this class.
Lots of writing and lots of reading. There is something due almost every other class period. However, he is a really nice man and really has a passion for English. He encourages class discussion and opposing opinions. He takes attendance so it would be good to show up
This is a class where you have to read. While the reading is not taken for any grade, if you don't read and don't participate, expect to be called out. There are many assignments for this class but they all accumulate into a final paper. Overall, Severson is a good teacher who helps if you need it and is clear, but expect to work for it!
Severson was an amazing professor! His lectures involved open debates with his class and he always tried to answer all questions to the best of his ability. Expectations were clear for all assignments. Not too many big papers, and a few small ones. He wanted your topic on the big papers to be similar so you could build off of them. Take this class!
Phenomenal teacher enjoyed every minute of class. Have short weekly reading assignments, and small quizzes to accompany them every week as well. One mid-term, single writing assignment(easy) and your final exam. Overall he is a fun teacher who made the class really funny and enjoyable to participate, accepts all viewpoints and just a must have!
He was very straight forward and everything was very clearly outlines in the syllabus. Discussions in class were great. I had an 8 am, so not every one was involved and awake at that time. He was able to slip humor into his lectures and used visuals during his lectures about the author and the time period. Seriously, do the reading
Professor Severson actually made reading enjoyable to me. I never liked reading, as I thought it was boring. He made it fun, and interesting. Encouraged students to participate in discussions instead of just lecturing and giving you work to do. There isn't much homework, but there were quizzes on readings every week.
1010 do recommend - literally. I tell everyone I know that they should take Severson if they can; he's a fantastic prof, leads good discussion even when time is limited, funny, and so obviously enthusiastic about the material. He'll work with you if you talk to him and is super helpful.
Best professor I have ever had. Hands down. He makes 8 am not so terrible, and really is amazing at making literature interesting. He breaks the high school feel of lit, gets you to think and respects your opinion. DEFINITELY the best Lit professor!
Lectures are not very interesting and seem very long. Class discussions cover what you have read out of class but none of the discussions are very interesting. Every paper is about food which is extremely boring to write about over and over again. Papers are graded fairly. The more effort you put into your paper, the better grade you will receive.
I doubt you'll get better. Doesn't expect you to care about Lit. Midterm+Final+ a 4 pg paper on 1 work. 10 ? quiz every-other class over 10 pgs. Thought this class would be excruciating but Severson made a boring subject somewhat enjoyable. Some poetry, mostly stories. Attendance is strict, miss 3+ classes and you drop a letter grade. Easy class!
If you want to improve your writing and critical thinking skills, then Dr. Severon's class is for you. While the honors class does require lot of writing (12 total papers-four long essays and 8 shorter pieces), it is definitely worth it. Dr. Severson is very helpful during class and one on one during office hours. I would take again/recommend.
Prof. Severson was great!! He was very helpful and always answered every question to his best ability. He was very passionate about the class material which made my experience even more enjoyable. He likes to lecture but he gets off topic easily so they weren't too bad. Make sure you read every assignment or you won't know what he is talking about!
Professor Severson is probably one of my favorites I've had at Kennesaw. He makes reading American Literature interesting and gets his students to analyze every work. Make sure you read before class because he gives pop quizzes on the readings and expects the class to openly discuss the work. He has a great sense of humor & I really enjoy his class
He is a great teacher. The reading isn't HORRIBLE, but sometimes there is a good bit of it. You will read 2-3 stories or poems before each class. He gives a pop quiz once a week, but they aren't hard if you at least read a summary of the story. The tests are kind of difficult, but he only gives two. One paper at the end. Great teacher.
Dr. Severson is awesome! He really loves teaching literature. Be sure you read before class, he gives a pop quiz every week. The midterm and final are difficult just because you have to remember dates but it's not too bad. I really enjoyed his class and his lectures. Take him, he's awesome.
Genuine guy. Gives a popquiz once a week on the reading. Long class discussions but interesting if you actually participate. Strict attendance policy but for your own good. Couple discussion posts, two poems to write, midterm and a noncumulative final. Flexible, funny, and respectful professor. Highly suggest you take his class. Easy A if you work
Beyond these tags^ Severson cares about his students, expects participation backed up by reading, and gives a lot of papers. He is amazing at helping you become a better writer. Does require work, but not too much, and it's totally worth it. He has a sense of humor and loves encouraging his students to better their writing and to expand their minds
Severson is a great guy- just get ready to write A LOT of papers (I had something due almost every week), stay on top of readings & participate in class discussions. Attendance is mandatory (you get 3 skips & then every absence is a point deducted off your final grade & if you have more than 6 total, then you fail the course). Hope this helps!
Very approachable and smart guy. Weekly quizzes on reading. I only enjoyed about half of the readings we were assigned. He keeps lectures funny and enjoyable, however each class is just a discussion of the readings for the entire duration, so make sure you talk up or else it can get boring.
There's a lot of papers, but most are small easy assignments. He gives really good feedback and if you want more all you have to do is ask. You have to do the reading because he does call people out in class who don't. There are really good discussions that are on topics you actually care about.
Loved this class even though I dislike writing. All writings centered around food. You will get the most out of this class by attending regularly. Good feedback on papers. Lively discussions in class. Highly recommend this professor.
Absolutely adored this professor! He was everything I had ever hoped for in an English teacher. You know movies where there is that one teacher that truly inspires their students to read? That's MJ. He's like Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society mixed with John Green in like every crash course video. I would recommend him to anyone. 10/10.
Professor Severson is a great teacher. You will need to read the books to be able to participate in lectures and write essays. He gives great feedback on papers. There are lots of assignments, but they aren't hard. The short ones are easy and can be done in one sitting, the long essays are more difficult, but still doable.
Prof. Severson is a really amazing professor. All of his assignments seem like busy work but they lead up to his final project. He's very fair, he's always reachable, he's really interesting. His lectures make it worth taking an 11am class. If you want a good grade and a great teach to take multiple times in a row, GO SEVERSON!
I was recommended MJ and was not let down. One of my favorite teachers so far. Someone I'd keep up with after the semester ended. Research paper seems looming but in reality the work you do throughout the sem really prepare you and it's not that bad at all. Pick him if you like to write and give your opinion.
His class was boring. All we did was talk about what we read the night before. He's very nice. He'll respond to emails, and he's always cracking jokes in class. I just felt like I could've taken this class online.
Professor Severson is by far the BEST teacher I've had in college. I know this seems dramatic but the man knows his stuff! There were many readings for this class, but don't let that scare you. He connects well with his students and does an amazing job at creating class discussions. If you show up and do the work, it is an EASY A. 100 % take him!
Severson is a just a great guy. Easily one of the best teachers i've taken thus far. All reading/writing is based on food, which helps keep the class interesting. I can't recommend him enough. As long as you put effort in your papers, you will do well.
Awesome guy, kind of nerdy but hella funny. I took him for American Lit this semester, and his class was easy but also very stimulating. Just do your reading and you'll be fine, but there are weekly pop quizzes! Mid-term and final were easy comprehension questions. Barely any writing... We never wrote a single essay
He's a great professor and his class is super easy. He's super nice and funny but a major nerd but the good kind of nerd. He assigns a lot of reading but I never read a single thing and still made an A. He has discussion board posts and short response papers that are super easy. His essays are based on word count and super easy topics about food.
Dr. Severson was my favorite professor I've ever had. He not only gives a damn about the course, but gives a damn about every individual student. Drops 5/15 quizzes which gives you chances to just quit on reading you hate. Only one super short paper. Attendance does count-but you get 3 absences first & you'll want to go to class. Incredible guy.
Great teacher. Quiz once a week. Can just read the summaries on google and make 100s. Pretty easy class if you aren't lazy.
Professor Severson is like the Robin Williams of American Literature. He will make you actually care about reading even if you were not a fan before his class. His class is basically discussion with a weekly quiz that you can get 100 on if you just glance at the readings the night before.
Dr. Severson was amazing because he made class fun and enjoyable. All you have to do is read what he asks you to read. It may seem daunting at first but that's literally your only job. The quizzes are once a week, you only need to do 3 discussion posts and then a short essay at the end. If you just read, then you're set. I loved this class so much.
Dr. Severson is a really good professor. The class is heavy on reading, but I enjoyed that. You have a quiz once a week that consists of everything you read since the previous quiz, three discussion posts, one paper, and the final and midterm are essentially the same. I'm sure he doesn't format all his classes the same, but there's a general idea.
Great Professor! Make sure you read the books and participate! The conversations are great in class. When you write the paper, make sure it is focused on the subject. Make sure you understand the online readings as well!
Severson is awesome!! Obviously it's heavy on the reading, it's a lit class... Literally just read everything that's assigned and PARTICIPATE in class discussions and you will do great!! He is so funny and a really nice guy. I hate english classes, but really enjoyed coming to this one!
Not a fan of lit because I don't love to read, but I enjoyed his class. He's a nice guy and he's funny. He cares about his students, gives good feedback, and is fair. Take his class if you can.
It's lit, so of course there's a lot of reading, but Prof. Severson makes what I consider to be a boring subject, pretty interesting. He's a good teacher, a nice guy, and he's very fair. Take his class! I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Severson designs the course so that students ease into the final research paper. Although his class is somewhat challenging (you have to work for an A), he challenges you as a writer and gives feedback via email, meetings, or class.
I mistakenly thought this class would be decent for making an A based on the other reviews, but I was so wrong. There are MANY papers in this class (1 a week) and the professor is a harsh grader. Theres no extra credit either. Take this class if you love writing and are good at it, or if youre an english major. Otherwise, avoid.
I didn't love him personally but professionally he is very qualified. Each mini paper leads up to the final research paper and honestly I just did my annotated bib very well and then copied and pasted most of it for the final paper (and got a 96 on it). Not an extremely difficult class, wrote each mini paper an hour before the class period began
It was obvious that he loves teaching English and sincerely cares about his students. He made class fun! He wants everyone to succeed. Do the readings, participate in class and you'll do just fine.
Great professor i took him during the summer semester so the classes were 2 and a half hours but he managed to keep everyones attention he lets you pick the topics of your paper which i loved and he always tries to get you involved. I have never been good at english but he made it interesting.
We were expected to read before class and then we discuss the text during class. Thats about it. We had discussion posts, journals, and essays to write. Just follow his instructions and lectures and youll be fine.
You can only miss 2 classes before it effects your grade. Lectures are on the reading from the night before. 4 papers(800-1400 words), 4 response papers(400-600 words), 4 discussion posts and responses and a food journal. I didn't read any of the stories and wrote nonsense in the journal and got an A so its not hard he is a easy grader.
Probably one of the best english classes I have ever taken! Make sure to do all of your work and submit everything on time - would 100% take again!
His class was fairly easy. Reading is required every night and they were fairly short readings. But you were never tested on the readings you just had to discuss them at the beginning of class. 4 papers all from 800-1200 words. Not a tough grader
MJ has a passion for not only the subject he teaches, but more importantly getting his students to appreciate writing. While his assignments may come across as busy work, it all to build skills necessary for the final paper (which is worth a LOT of your grade). A's are rare, but he's still a fair grader--he'll do anything for those in his class.
Professor Severson's entire class is based on the topic of food! Every reading and essay will be food involved. This makes English fun and entertaining. While lectures can sometimes get boring, I would rather lecture about food than usual English books and writings. Cares about his students and makes cookies for everyone!
Professor Severson is one of my favorite professors so far. He's super sweet and cares about his students. As long as you read the texts before class you will be fine. There's a few writing assignments, but he grades them easily and they aren't very long.
Not a lot of writing and is very caring and interesting.
Professor Severson was a great professor. He is very helpful and gives great feedback on papers. There are discussions every class period about the readings, so make sure to read. Overall, he genuinely cares about his students grades and their drive to learn.
Mr. Severson's teaching style is very effective due to how relatable he is to the class. I always appreciated coming into class, ready for discussions or draft workshops due to how fun the experience was. This class is structured in a way to strongly encourage writing improvements through his short and sweet lectures and activities!
Professor Severson was one of my favorite Professors! very nice and funny ( fr he was funny). I loved him. highly recommended. He is an easy grader. I found his class very interesting. Discussion posts and easy quizzes ( less than 10 questions) every week. 2 exams, multiple choice very easy just study the basic stuff about the readings, 1 paper
Pretty good professor, if you put in the work you could definitely pass with an A. There were reading and responses due every single week and it could add up if you don't give yourself time. but overall decent. Tests were easier than you would think.
I love this professor! He really cares about his students and wants to see you pass. You do have to read a lot, usually about 15 pages per class and weekly online quizzes over each week's readings (super easy questions & not lockdown). 2 Tests: one midterm and one final. One paper at the end of the semester ( only about 2 pages long ).
Great Professor all around.
What can I say, Professor Severson is a god in teacher form. He is easily one of the best teachers I've ever had and his lectures were like amazing TED talks every time. The semester I took him was pre-quarantine so I don't know if the class is still discussion based, but when I took him it was amazing. In summary, TAKE HIM HE'S THE BEST!
Dr. Severson was great! He did a very great job at handling online learning while even creating the assignments the week before, even if there were minor errors, he was always willing to clarify any confusion if you just sent him an email. Its a very discussion-oriented class and a lot of your work is commented on/reviewed by your peers.
Lectures are informative and break down difficult concepts in a way that's easy to understand. While there are weekly quizzes, they are mostly straightforward and test basic comprehension. Severson does a good job choosing stories that are not just entertaining but also interconnected throughout the course. I left the class wanting to read more
I really liked this teacher. He always answered emails and, when he was out of power for 3 days, he still graded my assignments faster than my other teachers. He had freewrites to help us get over writer's block, mini papers w/ feedback that led up to the major papers, and peer-reviewed rough drafts. Overall, his class is good even for nonwriters
Dr. Severson is a really great professor with the goal of making each student a better writer. If you're not good at writing, this a great professor to work with. There are 3 papers total and weekly discussion boards. The best part about this professor is the absolutely incredible feedback he gives about the strong and weak points of your papers.
I've taken Dr Severson twice, and enjoyed the courses both times, as they were survey courses we didn't get to go into much depth but the content he chooses and way he teaches make things entertaining. just make sure you do the reading ! he gives quizzes every class on the previous nights content
He is an awesome dude. Given the circumstances of the pandemic, he was super compassionate towards students and very lenient. Also, very helpful and knowledgable about American Lit.
He's a super nice professor and understanding. He is always willing to help and always tells us to email him if we need help with anything. There is a lot of writing assignments in this class, but it's not too hard, just takes two or so hours to finish. He isn't too strict on grading either. Really great choice!
Very nice guy, I genuinely enjoyed his class, reading wasn't that hard, QUIZZES are easy (every week), and he doesn't assign that many discussion posts or papers (1). During class he wants discussion about what you thought about the readings and such, but this was easy enough (kinda awkward since there was only 5 of us in person) Would take again.
Prof. Severson inspires you to read and enjoy stories rather than worry about studying the facts about them to take tests. Literally, if you read and listens to class lectures/ discussions, you will pass. Lectures are always interesting. There's a mid-term and a final exam, and a paper at the end (which is easy). Take him!!!
He is super nice and has very engaging lectures! There is quite a bit of reading and discussion posts every week and a weekly pop quiz but if you show up its an easyyyy A!
I took Severson Fall of 2021 and by far one of the best professors I've had. I've NEVER been a fan of reading until I took his class. He literally makes stories more interesting than what they really are. Very few assignments given, & he's an easy grader. Sometimes it can get awkward during class discussion when no one participates, but its fun!
Professor Severson has honed his curriculum down to a science and the way his class is laid out is very rewarding for students.
TAKE HIM! He's understanding, charismatic, and an overall fair teacher. The assignments are straightforward with great feedback. I would def take him again and I 100% recommend him. Honestly my fav professor from this semester. Just get your work done and don't bs it, you'll do great.
GO TO CLASS! Even if you didn't read. The way we went over the readings in class helped give a clear understanding of all readings (even the ones I didn't do). Participating in discussion helps. Weekly 10 question quizzes about the readings/poetry were pretty easy. Only one 800 word writing assignment that was easy. He is a nice guy.
I wasn't looking forward to taking lit, but Prof. Severson does his absolute best to make it interesting. The reading choices were great, and I loved the end-of-year book he chose. He also did his best to make the books as cheap as possible. The few times I went to class (during COVID) the conversations were kept fluid and interesting.
Positives: Good lecturer, easy assignments, good communication, willing to work with you, easy A Negatives: Lots of reading
You do have required reading some short some long. But I made it through this class with only reading some of them. Quizzes are super easy. Weekly discussion posts over poems usually which are also fairly easy. One essay and attendance matters but class discussions can be fun sometime. Loved this class and professor was great
Took this in summer so it was a bit overwhelming but he's a fairly easy grader so it was all right. Was fine with waiving assignments if it was absolutely necessary; I believe he accepted late work at times. Somewhat kind, funny at times. Weekly discussions were sometimes dry and forced, but also to balance it out sometimes very interesting.
I really enjoyed this class. The one thing I would say is be wary of the final paper. I made great grades on all of my paper in the class, 95% and above on all of them, but the final paper I made a 79% on. It came as a shock to see that grade, because everything leading up to it indicated I was poised to make an A on it.
Attendance based on small prompt about readings. 3 poems + explanations, 3 "think" pieces, quiz almost every week. 1 poem dropped, 4-5 quizzes dropped. Quiz very easy if you read the readings, if not, go to class and he will talk through them. No lockdown browser. Careful using "outside assistance" for writings and poems. Most all readings online.
Very funny guy. No papers, only 3 discussion posts & had to write two easy poems. Kinda a lot of reading but most of it was interesting. Attendance is taken every day by an easy writing prompt at the beginning of class. Small, VERY easy quiz at the end of each week. He also drops like 5 of the lowest grades at the end of the year.
This is a great class! You have one easy quiz every week over the readings, you take a midterm and final which are also easy. You write 2 poems total with explanations and he is a very fair grader, you also write 3 discussion posts total. He drops about 3 of your lowest quiz grades and 3 attendance grades if you missed a class. Take him
Professor Severson has a "theme" for his 1101 class where all we ever read or wrote about was food. We were required to keep a journal about our random thoughts on food. I got sick of it really fast and found that I felt like I was reading the same thing over and over again. Don't take this professor if you get bored of reading the same topic.
Amazing professor, took his hybrid class. Each week there was readings before each class. The online portion included a discussion post, quiz, and handout (sometimes). Two tests, midterm and final, were online and open book and quite easy. One 800 word paper towards end of semester. Only downside is lectures are boring and attendance is mandatory.
Severson's ENG1101 class had a unique food theme, but it got repetitive quickly. However, he's an understanding professor with straightforward assignments and great feedback. Definitely take him, just don't slack off - unstuck AI helped me ace this class!
Professor Severson cares about his students, class is mandatory due to a 2-5 sentence prompt written at the beginning of class each day (adds to be a big portion of overall grade). he is super nice and smart on all topics and readings his lectures go hand in hand with the exams and quizzes. easy to get an A if you just show up and do your work.
Prof Severson was a very caring and educated lecturer who was down to earth, while also trying to give as much useful and meaningful advice and info as he could. Great lectures, but the reading load was just insane. Merciless amounts of long readings and homework, but if you do all the work you will pass w/ an A likely. 2 open note tests in-person.
Severson was a very interesting prof. Before each class, we had to read poems/short stories. LOTS of readings. Each week included a discussion post and a quiz. 2 IN PERSON EXAMS that are OPEN NOTE. 1 Paper based on one of the readings. Lectures tend to be lengthy and can be boring at times. He cares about you; would recommend you take this class.
He gives a crazy amount of classwork during the summertime and your doing a minimum of 10 writing assignments per week which is very crazy in my opinion. I would NEVER take this professor again.
The professor treats the 1102 class like a 2000 or 3000 level class with the amount of workload given. It is 2-3 discussion posts biweekly. Wednesday and Sunday. Along with this get ready to write almost 1500-2500 words based on the task. He seems to think every student is using AI and think more work = less AI use. This punishes regular students.
Gives out a lot of busy work and you don't really learn much. A lot of pointless writing assignments that contribute nothing to your learning . Some days I would try to get the major assignments done but I would have to finish 4 other mini assignments leading up to that. Pretty easy class overall. I personally would not recommend.
SUPER easy class. Lots of readings each week with a weekly quiz, but such easy questions like "who wrote this". You can easily pass. No attendance, but there are daily writings to do in beginning of class answering a prompt. He does count those and that makes up a good chunk of your grade so attendance is important. Midterm and final as well- easy.
He's nice, but he assigns lots of "busy work". Personally, I don't think he's a tough grader. Tons of discussion posts and requires lots of participation. His office hours are terrible, and it takes him a little to get back to you. He does make this class easy, just a ton of meaningless assignments. I'd recommend over an in-person class though.
Overall, chill class, I didn't like him. Most of the class was just a bunch of useless rants. Attendance is mandatory, but he drops a few at the end of the semester. It's a midterm and final, lockdown browser, weekly quizzes on the readings, and two major assignments. It's a relatively light workload, but some of the readings are about 20+ pages
Severson is an incredible instructor. He is, by far, the best professor I've had. His lectures are full of interesting information about the authors we study, and he has us read some really good short stories and poetry. Taking this class has helped reignite my love for reading and writing. If you are even mildly interested in lit, take him.
