Wonderful professor. Talks a little fast, but very interesting. Knows a lot about what he is talking about.
tests are hard. let's you argue your point. makes you think. very down to earth
A good teacher for a hard subject.
I loved this class! The teacher was wonderful and humorous, very approachable. His test are very hard and most people are failing his class. I would only recommend him if you're willing to put forth a great amount of effort
I really enjoyed this class. Tobias is extremely energetic and got me interested in psychology. However, his tests are very difficult and it's not about studying definitions its about understanding/applying concepts. If you're not willing to put in the work, then you should not take this class!!!
very good professor. never felt bored in his class and felt like i learned a lot. pretty easy going class just make sure you do the work
very good professor. never felt bored in his class and felt like i learned a lot. pretty easy going class just do the work
I like his class so far. Hes teaching method is a little distracting, but you get use to it. I didn't think he test was that hard, as long as you understand what he's talking about in his lectures. I don't mind this class at all.
Very entertaining and interesting class. Felt like I learned allot. Make sure and do the work, and read the assigned pages. Lots of note taking which is important because allot of the information on test is not from the book, so pay attention! Hard not to though, he is pretty entertaining.
Tobias is a professor made for a certain type of student. If you are easily annoyed by his obsessive compulsive habits and stories you won't stand a chance, but if you can ignore/ tolerate those habits you will find a very knowledgeable, funny, and challenging professor.
This professor is great! I would recommend him to anyone. Very humorous, and very kind. His notes are crystal clear, and the time you spend in class is always useful. Never a dry moment! Take his class!!
Lectures were interesting and funny, I didn't mind the teaching style, but his tests do not relate to the lecture, they are text book.
He is a great teacher. Talks rather fast and handwriting is hard to read but he will answer all questions and clarify anything. Lots of pop quizes so be sure to read. His classroom atmosphere is great. Only bad thing is he usually never emails you back.
Talks fast. Moves alot. YOU MUST READ THE TEXT BOOK, WHEN ASSIGNED. Very helpful and knowledgable. Humorous.
Great teacher overall. Testing did not match the teaching style of the lecture. Difficult to learn one way and test another.
Great teacher overall. Testing did not match the teaching style of the lecture. Difficult to learn one way and test another.
Fabulous!! Tobias is an extremely fascinating professor with atypical teaching methods. I was always amazed at his thought process and his ability to make difficult material understandable for the students in his class. Was always willing to help and problem solve. You could never be disappointed with his class. Take him and find out!!!
Do not take this course online with him. Does NOT communicate well at all: about due dates or respond to your emails. You will be lost the entire semester.
Very hard to follow or understand. Assignments rarely have precise instructions then you get an F if his directions were unclear. Very scattered.
Tobias is cool. You should take his class.
Tobias is a very good man with great stories. Tho, he doesn't explain himself that well. This also includes his instructions, written & audible. On one side, he's interesting, entertaining, and expressive. The other, he's unclear, scattered, and difficult (at times); your choice. Honestly, I suggest auditing his classes.
Awesome teacher. He is very enthusiastic.
Instructor Tobias is AMAZING!! He is clear on his power-points and I found his study guides to be extremely helpful. He has away of presenting his lectures in a thoughtful and concise manner and you exit his class filled with useful information. His tests can be difficult, but he is fair in grading them. Love HIM!!!
I liked Tobias, he was very enthusiastic & I feel like I learned a lot in his class, but only did average (C range) on tests. He gives lots of extra credit which helps. No attendance grade, but there are pop quizzes (usually after notes, so you don't HAVE to read, but it helps). Most get a B. Notes are very clear, but he isn't always so clear.
Mr.Tobias Is very funny and keeps things interesting, but listen very close because he goes 100 mph and unclear at times but a very good professor.
Instructions aren't specific, but he expects you to know exactly what he wants. Doesn't respond to emails, very unorganized, will cancel class with no notice (which is very annoying). You get a cheat sheet for the tests, but the questions are misleading and aren't usually on the study guide. I wish I would have never taken this class.
Professor Tobias is amazing! His informative lectures are packed with knowledge that is both useful and thought provoking. His tests are hard, but they are designed to test your application of the concepts taught, not just a regurgitation of the assigned readings/lectures.Professor Tobias is intense, but student success in Psychology is his goal!
Easily the best teacher I have ever had. Missing a class was truly heartbreaking. You don't want to miss a single minute of Tobias and his craziness. He is such a fair teacher and unlike many others at SCC he has high energy and truly loves teaching and his students.
Tobias is a great professor. He's not impossible but is not going to just give you a grade either. You will get what you work for. He is tough but you will walk away better off for having taken his class. I highly recommend him.
Very helpful, insightful, and great at conveying information to the class. He moves at a faster pace, but not so fast that you have no chance to understand him. He is well spoken and is always willing to help. While a good grade in his class is far from a "gimme", he is a fair professor who might actually teach you a thing or two.
Steer clear of his class. He is very unorganized, pompous, and tests are nearly impossible to pass.Although, he appears to be very enthusiastic and passionate in the classroom, he has admitted it is just a facade. Also he admits to being a narcissist and expects you to answer all his essay questions exactly how he would or they are wrong.
He is a very unorganized professor. He is not clear on what wants for his tests and projects. He puts topics on his exams that were not on the study guides. He does not respond to e-mails and he only covers less than half of the material you are supposed to know for the exam. He is a terrible professor.
Loved this class! You have to work for your grade. His tests are impossible but you still get a lot of opportunities to bring your grade up. Make sure you have a good/fun class and speak up and ask questions.
I would not recommend this professor. The class seemed promising until the first test. Even with a study guide and cheat sheet no one, myself included, did better than a C. The questions on the test have nothing to do with the study guide provided and the questions can be confusing. He doesn't give clear instruction on class projects or homework.
I loved this class even though I wasn't that interested in the subject, and that's because of Tobias. He's extremely clear and will thoroughly answer any questions. I felt his grading was fair, but not easy. His assignments aren't always clear, so be sure to look them over before you leave and ask questions! He DOES answer moodle emails.
Horrible professor! He doesnt explain assinments. He makes the class harder than it should be. His grading is so poor! He grades hard and marks wrong for grammer and other stuff but doesnt do grammer right himself. His tests usually have nothing to do with the study guide. I would never suggest this teacher ever! Definatley would never take again.
Tobias is extremely unorganized, and very full of himself. But you will learn the material. Its fairly easy to get a B in his class, but IMPOSSIBLE to get an A. Either put in 1 hour of work and get a B or 7 hours of work for an A. I probably wouldn't recommend him for the serious student, but he is funny.
He was very unorganized. He canceled class 4 times and when the whole class did bad on his tests he wondered what WE the students were doing wrong.
I absolutely loved this teacher! His class is very hard, but you learn a lot and he clarifies if needed. His assignments are very clear and he offers a lot of extra credit. He's quick with his emails and he's not one bit intimidating! His tests are very hard, but obviously he makes you work for your grade like teachers should. Great class!
The lectures were interesting. He's very energetic and bouncy. His homework assignments and exams however were confusing and not always very clear about what he was trying to ask, he does recognize this though and tries to clarify the best he can. He's actually a teacher despite his flaws though.
Awesome teacher. Very fun, funny, kind, but can be challenging from a homework perspective.
Tobias is a really good prof but terrible at communicating outside of class. Show up everyday and study a little bit and you should be fine
he brightens everyone's days. listens to any suggestions you might make. pop quizzes are easy as long as you read the chapters he assigns, and he even throws in a breathing question which is common sense. overall, very interesting class. you'll never stop laughing with him. overall, he's a great teacher. u earn your grade like every other class.
He is absolutely crazy, but by the second week you get used to it. Lots of pop quizzes so be prepared. I really didn't use the book much. He keeps everything interesting with his stories and he's pretty funny. I didn't have to study much and enjoyed going to class. I definitely recommend him. A fair class and a fair professor!
He's a great teacher, many of the projects assigned were slightly confusing on exactly what he was looking for. Also projects are often group or solo optional but for those that are solo workers, projects are a lot to do in time frame given. Amazing lectures. Very active. Nice guy
Tobias is amazing! I took him originally for PSY101 and loved him so much I took him for Human Growth and Lifespan. His high energy and stories make it extremely easy to pay attention in class. He is such an amazing teacher that I actually ended up switching my major to education. I would recommend him to anyone. He is extremely fair and amazing.
Really hyper-active. At the beginning of the semester I was a little over-whelmed, because I wasn't used to a teacher that was hyper, but I really ended up liking him by the end of the semester. He has somewhat easy tests, although he grades hard on his projects he assigns. He always made class more fun and interesting, and is helpful. Good teacher
SUUUUUPER funny. I would reccomend him to anyone. He is great but it's kind of distracting. Make sure you take notes!
He's basically a comedian. You'll laugh a lot. He's definitely not an easy grader and the tests are pretty complicated, but he gives a lot of simple extra credit opportunities. Pop quizzes will KILL your grade. They are only 5 points but by the end they add up. Even though it was a little on the challenging side, it was fun and worth it.
Awesome guy, great humor, great attitude. Online quizzes will kill you though.
Psych of Aging sounded good, but it's a disaster! He posts discussion questions to answer, but doesn't do any actual teaching. How do I learn about aging from Millennials posting THEIR opinions? Quizzes are straight from text, but he got answers wrong twice. Text is OK, but lots of terminology, not much discussion. DON'T BOTHER TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Awesome teacher. Makes the class interesting.
Tobias is a great guy and an awesome professor. The only thing that I disliked was the amount of pop quizzes. I didn't have to take the final for his class though, so that definitely made up for it.
I had Tobias for child psychology. He defiantly knows his stuff, so if you are in the childcare/ development field he would be a good candidate to reach out to. But on the other side he was a little corky. not that thats a bad thing..
He is the best teacher I have had at SCC. I loved coming to class every day. He is honestly one of the funniest people you will meet. Felt like i was going to a comedy show every class. The tests were kinda hard but he only tests over what you learn, so if you pay attention you will do good.
Funny, but lots of online work to complete. Not an easy A, but if you show up to class, you'll do relatively well.
Amazing teacher, tests are difficult, study hard
Hilarious guy, makes things interesting. Lots of busy work, and pop quizzes though. Just show up and do the assignments and you'll be fine. He also allowed us to use our study guides while taking the tests.
He was the best teacher I have had so far at SCC. He made sure to make class interesting and fun. Make sure you show up to class and study and you will pass.
Professor Tobias, has a unique approach to teaching. While I enjoyed every lecture , he tends to be a little judgemental with his students. I excelled greatly in his class but because of a couple online optional assignments, brought my grade down regardless. Double check your pop quizzes I know I deserved more credit than was given.
Very loud, obnoxiously jumps around the room constantly. Ask a question and expect not to get a real answer.
Easy to talk to, very fun, pop quizzes often but 3 common sense questions and 2 based on his lecture.
I had him for my online human growth and development class. He might be great as an on campus lecture, but I would absolutely not recommend his class online. He is not good about getting back with students. I emailed him for almost two months with no response regarding a question I had. An online instructor should be responsive to emails.
Tobias is my favorite professor at SCC. He is the only reason I decided to continue in my education. He is extremely helpful and hilarious! He truly cares about his students.
Marvin Tobias was one of the best teachers I have had in a long time. He is a strange person but kept the class fun. The class itself is a class that works out better if you do a little bit every day to keep it fresh in your mind for the tests. He was a very funny instructor that I learned a lot from and that I would gladly have again.
He is an amazing professor, but he talks like John Green. His lectures are very informative and his assignments and projects pertain well to the curriculum. He is a tough grader though. He communicates much better in person than he does in writing! Sometimes his written assignments are difficult to understand so make sure to ask for specifics.
such a good teacher
Jokes & tells stories way more than teaches. Makes uncomfortable remarks. Assignments are unnecessarily long & time-consuming. Study guides are not presented on the test. Pop quizzes every week, sometimes over irrelevant material. Will always tell students its ok to not know the answer as if it doesn't affect our grade. but it does!
I took this class online. The teacher was unique. I liked how he did recorded lectures but this class took up alot of time. Its an interesting class still but you will have to work for your grade. The tests were pretty hard, he makes the projects pretty easy. However, his personality will keep you on your toes. Just make sure you study.
This class was difficult for me because I barely even opened the textbook but if you actually read the book and take good notes then it wont be too difficult. Some of it can be really easy and common sense but some of it can be really hard. Also make sure you keep on top of the online hw! He tells hilarious stories and makes class time fun.
I always enjoy his lectures. That hour and 15 minutes goes by fast.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. I thought this course would be interesting, but it was very boring yet somehow extremely challenging. The 50 question quizzes every 2 weeks were awful. Strict grader.
Harsh grader, seem irritated when you address him for help, a lot of research
Condescending in his responses if he responded at all. Verbal assignments given in lectures are confusing. He assigns extra reflection questions at the end of every chapter. Very conservative time constraints on lengthy exams. 15 assignments due (including 2 final projects and a 200 question timed exam) on the last two days of the semester.
I thought he was a pretty good teacher, he was super energetic and funny during his lectures. He told a bunch of stories and his pop quizzes aren't too terrible, but if you miss what the homework was or the reading you'll be lost.
He was the worst professor I have ever had!!! All of his rubrics were super unclear and confusing. He is super unorganized and forgets when he tells you things are due. His lectures are fun and energetic, you definitely will not fall asleep but as a professor he is not the best. Just super unorganized and all over the place.
His lectures are fun and will keep you engaged but he is a really tough grader. Rubrics are unclear and he doesn't give feedback on what you can do better next time on assignments. Says he will put examples of projects up but doesn't. I know this is a 200 level class but the expectations and assignments are overwhelming and seem unreachable.
At first, I was really unsure about him. His lectures were funny and entertaining, but he's a tough grader. Then classes switched to online because of COVID. He was very understanding to everyone and constantly made everyone aware that he was there to help you with anything, even personal matters. He eased up on grades, and was overall very caring.
Tobias is an amazing professor and he is hilarious. His lectures are the best and he will definitely keep your attention the whole time. The only problem I had with this class was that the grading was a little tough. You really have to study to understand the material for the test and his feedback wasn't always so clear. Other than that good class
Took this course online. He gave verbal assignment in the recorded lectures and were very unclear. I would message him asking him to send me the exact question he wants me to answer because he was very unclear. No response. He ignores his students and is unorganized. He is funny, ill give him that. His lectures were engaging and fun to watch.
He was the best. He gave a lot of homework and reading but his humor and how he ran class made it worth it. Most of the homework is in book already made assignments that are 3-4 questions than adds on some extra stuff but nothing terrible. He is good about giving extensions and being reasonable. Easy to talk with!
I do not think that Tobias is as harsh of a grader as a lot of these reviews say. He gives good feedback and as long as you address all parts of the prompt on an assignment you wont have a hard time. His lectures are always entertaining and he really does care about his students.
AMAZING professor. I took his online Child Psychology course this past summer. He's a character... short clips may have found their way onto my Snapchat story. :) Does NOT like to give high As, which is a shame, because I like receiving them! Will give you an A in his class, as long as you work hard and show him you care.
he was super funny and entertaining. made learning easy. great professor and great class
He is really understanding and easygoing. Assignments weren't too hard and tests were fairly easy. take good notes and pay attention and it'll go smoothly! Awesome professor
Very tough grader. Is very specific about what he wants and will give you a low grade if you don't meet his expectations. He often says he will email the class about something and then doesn't. His lectures are very jumpy and fast.
He is very knowledgeable about psychology and lifespan! His lecture are never boring, and he presents the material well. He is a tough grader and there are lots of assignments to do. Overall, a great professor, and I would recommend taking his classes!
Wonderful professor. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. Teaches well and makes the class enjoyable.
Such a fun class that I recommend to everyone! Pro. Tobias is super funny and outgoing. His classes are heavy on notes, but he makes it fun!
If you don't fully grasp the concept, you'll get a 7/10 or lower on reflections. You can include sources, but without exact references, you'll lose 2+ points. The class is unnecessarily difficult, and attendance seems to dwindle each discussion. If you want a fun experience, consider a different professor.
My favorite professor at this college, great guy and a great teacher
Great Professor and class!
