uses a lot of classroom exercises; easy to understand; moderately easy exams if you do the homework and exercises, very helpful and approachable; makes 2.5 hr class fly; take her mos def
Took her course in the summer and she's great. Her in class worksheets are very helpful and she comes to class on her own time to help you out before a test if you ask her. I recommend her for anyone taking chem 1110. If she touch the next chem class I would take it
Hard class and she was not very helpful. I kept emailing and she did not help me at all.
Great teacher! A lot of time spent in class going over worksheets with other class members. She really knows her O Chem!Tests are reasonable and she has a few extra credit assignments. Highly recommended.
I took her online class, and she was awesome!! She gives really good review notes!! She gives HW but does not check it for accuracy, thats your job as review. Only gives a midterm and a final! I completely recommend her to anyone who needs to take her class! But chem is kind of a hard subject so i would take it from her in a classroom if possible!
good at teaching.
Alvarez is the best teacher at Slcc by a long shot. Her teaching is intriguing and entices students to participate and learn more. Her tests are incredibly fair, and she is always there to help students if needed. She taught me more than I have learned in any other semester of college! She is fantastic. Take this class if you can.
Great great teacher, chem is not for no brainer. she is very helfull and she knows the material very well, she make it easy to understand. I got a A in her class, my area was finance before. Just put in the effort and you will make it.
Online class. Great organization and very helpful in online discussions.
I hate chemistry, but this online class was great. Ms. Alvarez is helpful, tests are very fair, offers 15 points for extra credit. Final is long and hard but is fair & what is covered in class. Highly recommend.
She just would nevet email me back when I had questions. I had to drop the class.
I don't much like chemistry, but this teacher made problems easy to understand and there were lots of little assignments to boost grades. I did well in the class, but I did the reading. I noticed that those in my class that did not do so well didn't read. Getting the A isn't difficult if you do.
I hate chemistry! I have never taken it prior to this class, but luckily Mary did a great job starting with the basics. She is really great at explaining the concepts and making sure everybody understands. There is a lot of homework and 5 tests, but she gives you easy points and several xtra credits
Helpful but extremely difficult and prides herself on her classes having a "C" average. The homework is ridiculous and her tests come out of nowhere. She pulls information out of a book she uses for BYU which wasn't in our text!! Simply said try to find another section, it's not worth it when you see other exams from other instructors...
Homework is on Mastering Chemistry, HORRIBLE! She is not clear and thinks you already know the answer when you just raised your hand to get help. Her tests are only 20 questions so it is hard to get a good grade. Average of the class was a C.
Easily THE BEST instructor in terms of knowledge, clarity, and communication that I have ever had. Her tests are straight forward with no surprises or trick questions. I feel I have a much better understanding of the subject than students of other instructors. However, her class is challenging and aims for a C avg for her class (no curve tho)
I loved Mary! She was a great instructor. She made class fun along with teaching Chemistry. Had many ways you could study and learn that you had access to. Made it very clear to understand Chemistry. Came around the class 2-3 times to talk to us individually for questions. Talked to me after class many time to help clearify. TAKE FROM HER!!!
She is horrible! Busy work on mastering chemistry. Her test are unpredictable. She wants her class to have a C average. She's not their for your success as a student. Going into the next semester she is the only teacher with spots available in her class. All of the other o-chem teachers full with full wait list! Don't use her!!!
I took her online class and was scared at first but i really enjoyed it!! you have to stay on top of homework and quizzes but her lectures were really detailed. she also gave awesome extra credit assignments that were fun and easy. homework and quizz once a week. she let you come in to see her if you needed help. super helpful. take from her!
The instructor is nice and funny but the class is challenging. She grades higher.Tests are only about 20 or so questions so not much room for error. Mastering chemistry hw was sometimes way too much or some was not even used on tests. If you like the big challenge I you should take if not and have other heavy classes don't take.
I took this class online and Mary is a fantastic teacher! She is more than willing to be of assistance online or office hours. My only complaint is the mastering chemistry website which was horrendous and took MANY hours to accomplish the homework each week. Very time consuming class, be cautious with a heavy class load.
Mary is a great teacher. She is very smart, and also very willing to help. I took her class for both online chemistry 1110 and chemistry lab 1125. She expects a lot from you, but she is there to help. If you don't get a good grade, it's because you didn't utilize the help that she offers. All in all, I like her teaching style and I learned a lot.
Took online, wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Mastering Chemistry used for homework and quizzes; not way difficult, but time consuming. Points given for posting in online forums, plus 15 extra credit points possible. She's easy to contact and gets test results back quickly. She posts a lot in the forums to provide clarification/answer questions.
I was worried about not having an in-class lecture. She provides a typed lecture to explain the material and sometimes attaches audio files of her reading the lecture if you prefer that. It's still not as good as in-class, but definitely managable. She teaches a section in person and will let you go to that if you really need the in-class lecture.
Tests are hard; ~20 multiple choice questions, out of 100. No partial credit. She usually curves it by a question or two. If you study the "in class activities" she provides you with and understand how to do each of the problems on them, you'll be totally fine. Don't buy a book, I didn't touch mine the entire semester. Same book used for CHEM 1120.
I really liked Mary and felt she was helpful and clear on what she expected from us. I took her course online which I would not recommend. Only because the material is hard not because of her. She is by far the best online instructor I've ever had. Does fun extra credit assignments. All around a great teacher.
I took this class on-line and it was easier than I thought it would be. There was a lot of homework that took quite a while but you had plenty of time to do it. The homework and "inclass activity sheets" that she gives you access to really help you to learn the material. She is a great teacher that goes out of her way to help you learn the material
Mary is an amazing chem teacher! She loves the subject and really wants her students to succeed. Took her for both lecture and lab. She was a much better lecture teacher than lab instructor.
Excellent teacher! She wants all her students to understand chemistry. She is very helpful.
TAKE FROM ANOTHER PROF! She gave absolutely no direction in her labs,& was completely unhelpful when anyone asked for help. Took the online class,& knew it would be hard, but the class seems somewhat impossible when info. is not given to you, that is on the test. I expect that paying for an ed, my prof is there to actually help when help is needed.
Very good teacher. Answers all questions. I took it online and it was the best experience I have had as far as online classes go.
Took her for chem 1110 ONLINE. Best online course I've taken. Very organized. Lots of homework that takes a long time, but at least you learn it. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Tests are semi-hard so make sure you know your stuff.
Mary was awesome! I could tell she wanted her students to succeed. She explained things in ways I could understand. She was available to help outside of class. She gave exam study guides and answered questions before the tests. Chemistry is a tough subject, but I really enjoyed her class and plan on taking 1120 from her also.
Mary has been very helpful and patient with me. She is a kind and knowledgable professor.
Very poor class. Unless this is the only class you are taking this semester or you have an extremely in-depth understanding of chemistry I would highly recommend taking this class from someone else. Between Prof. Alvarez's 6 tests, 7 page chemistry paper, & hours of busy work on MC, this class does not pass at all for a 1000 level course.
Prof Alvarez is engaged and knowledgeable. What makes this class so horrible however is how difficult she makes it! She forgets that this is a fresh/soph level class & makes it far more difficult than it needs to be. She gives 6 tests during the semester which are unpredictable & difficult to study for since you never can tell what will be on them!
Easy review for this class- unless you are extremely proficient in Chemistry already dont take this class from this professor! You will spend the entire semester trying to teach yourself really difficult concepts. So, unless you really love chemistry, dont waste your time and energy taking it from this prof & trying to teach everything to yourself!
While this class is admittedly very difficult, Prof. Alvarez does everything in her power to help you succeed. She uses Adobe Connect to present her lectures to online students and is always quick to respond to any questions. She offers several extra credit opportunities. This class is tough but the tools are definitely there for you to succeed.
Great Online Class. Her Adobe Connect Lectures were crystal clear and well done. Can view multiple times. If you spend the time to do the homework you'll do well. She doesn't respond quickly to emails but will respond rapidly on discussion boards. I last minuted every test/assignment and did fairly well. A lot of math on tests which for me was good.
It was a class you had to work for. Mary is consistent and replied to emails pretty promptly. I did find a few errors through the semester in the problems she had for assignments but when I pointed them out she was humble enough to admit she was wrong and gave me credit for the answers. Good professor.
Taking Chemistry online was hard, but Mary wants you to succeed and will help you. Her written lectures and Adobe online lectures were very helpful.
she is a great instructor very clear and knowledgeable.
Prof. Alvarez was great!! You can tell that she really has passion for the subject and that she is very knowledgeable. Most of all, you could tell that she really cared about her class learning the material and was always there to clarify and answer questions. She expects a lot of you, but i would definitely recommend her.
Mary is well organized and knows her stuff. Grading is fair. Work hard, you will be rewarded. Not everyone will get an A, but that's how college courses should be. 1120 is expectedly more difficult than 1110, but it's a crash course in OChem! Print lectures, watch adobeconnect, study, and you'll do great! Slack off, and your grade will reflect.
This class takes a lot of work and effort but in the end you learn so much. I loved how everything went full circle and how at the end I really felt like I learned something. It was awesome!
She is very disorganized her class material is scattered all over the place. You end up teaching yourself a difficult subject. Lets not forget the math she is rude when students bring up math questions. I don't think she understands the math because the math she told us to use I showed my 1050 professor and he said she is wrong. Pass on her.
Great teacher- really knows her stuff and applies it to real life.
She went the extra mile to help work with me on several occasions
Best class ever!! Mary Alvarez's lectures are clear and concise, helping me overcome my previously instilled fear of o-chem. If you gotta take o-chem, she's the one. There is a LOT of work involved, but I really enjoyed the hours put in because I was learning so much, thanks to Mary's teaching style. She offers plenty of extra credit too.
Mary is a great teacher. The class was very hard and you have to do a TON of studying though. if you don't study, you won't pass! Her tests have around 25 questions so if you miss a few it can drop a grade on your exam. She does offer a decent amount of extra credit though!
She has the ability to explain things well. I took this class online and really liked the structure. She gives you written lecture notes as well as video lectures. The video lectures help a ton! Be sure to do the "In Class Activity Sheets". I never cracked the book once and end up with an A-. Be sure to study all the material she gives you though!
It was the worst experience I've had so far. She passed off her lectures from last semester (some of the videos didn't work), homework and everything else onto our class. Honestly it felt like I was paying her for work she did last semester. She told us she would curve the grade but didn't. I had a 86.51 in the end (B+ is a 87) and she gave me a B.
Mary is a good professor. Didn't do very well on tests though. The average on each test was in the 60s. But at the end, when all the assignments and extra credit are put in, it makes a huge difference. Online is tough for this class because you end up teaching yourself most of it, but I'd still recommend this class if you're motivated.
She posts everything on Canvas, including lecture notes and actual lectures from past classes. I didn't use the book once this semester but only studied from her lecture notes and listenedwatched the lectures over and over. There are a lot of Mastering Chemistry assignments and a paper, but she offers extra credit and is very involved & helpful.
Don't take online class! She isn't very helpful! She didn't respond back to me for days! I made an appointment to meet with her a week in advance and she tried to cancel the day before. I felt like she didn't listen to anything I was saying when I met up with her! Her videos are sloppy and missing parts and lots of background eating/slurping!
I took Mary's Hybrid class and she literally gives you everything you need to pass her class. She has lecture videos, practice assignments and goes over some of the Mastering Chemistry homework problems on her lecture videos which are a huge help if you get stuck! She also gives extra credit, only downside was a 7 page paper!
Expect to memorize pretty much everything from textbook as if Chem is your major. If I knew how her teaching style, lecture and test expectations before hand, I would not have taken a class from her. Never taking a class from her again.
Mary is AH-MAZING! Took her class online and everything was crystal clear from the start. Do your mastering chemistry homework online, and worksheets that go along with the video lectures. She's there for you if you need her! She's quirky and really wants to help you succeed! She is a great teacher! She's not confusing!
Mary is extremely helpful. I was worried about taking a chemistry class online, but she made it feel like we were in a classroom setting. The homework isn't that hard to do, but the tests are pretty tough.
This class is hard NOT to do good in. She teaches using various learning styles, offer extra credit fun assignments that help you learn, and includes the lecture notes. There are no suprises in her class. She is very upfront with what is expected. I could not ask for a better teacher.
Tough class. You have to be self motivated to take this online class. If you listen to the online lectures, print out the material and do the assignments for every section, you should do fine. I didn't use the book at all, but studied from the printed online lectures. She gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit.
I took 1110 and 1120 from her. Both classes tough, and Mary is not making it any easier. For the 1120 she had us to write 7 pages long SINGLE space paper about chemistry as part of the course grade, NOT an extra credit! That was ridiculous! Mary it is a science class not English writing class! DON'T take her class unless you have no other options.
Honestly the best online class i've ever had. She made Chem so easy! You don't even need to buy the book. Just watch her video lectures and videos on every hw and practice exam and you'll do great. It's so easy to get an A or B if you do her worksheets as well. I never thought I would do so good in this class. TAKE HER! She also replies right away.
I really liked Mary Alvarez. I took CHEM-1120 online. For an online class, it was extremely organized and clear. I always knew what was due when. She was very quick to respond to messages and was very helpful. She is also willing to work with you to understand the material. The class material was difficult, but she is the best online professor.
Took this class online and enjoyed it. I have really struggled with chemistry in the past but she made it very easy to understand. Class layout is very concise and her lecture notes are very thorough. She was really flexible and let me take an exam late because I was struggling with some of the concepts. Awesome teacher!
I would NOT take this class online. Bio Organic Chem is hard enough without having to teach yourself the material. You do all of your homework on Mastering Chemistry. She has a test about every other week. She also has you do a 7 page paper single spaced with only two pages worth of chem-related material. This class was VERY VERY VERY hard.
Mary has lectures in PDF form and video form so you can chose how to learn the material. I used both. She also is so organized it helps you stay on top of things. This was a hard class, no doubt, and you'll put in the hours to understand the material but Mary gives you all of the tools you need to succeed. My favorite online class so far.
She's great. She gives you all the tools you need. I took the hybrid class and loved it. She is very organized and willing to help. She puts up notes in pdf form along with practice problems. She even has a recorded video of the lecture to help you out. With any class you need to study. If you put in the time and effort you will do just fine.
This is not an easy class. You definitely have to put in the time. This professor 's online videos could be updated. She presents several wrong calculations throughout the course that students correct, which makes it harder to follow. Overall, I rate her as a good professor.
I took this class online from her. The way she sets everything up is really nice, and easy to follow. She does PDF files of the main things she wants you to remember, and video lectures of everything (lectures, homework assignments, and the practice exams). It's pretty easy to get an A if you just follow her criteria. And you can drop an exam.
Mary WANTS you to pass her class. I left an answer blank on the last test and when she gave the test back to me she asked what I would have answered and then gave me credit for it. She cares about her students and doesn't weigh you down with nonsense busy work. She will work with you and for you. I literally cannot say enough good things about her.
Funny, passionate, and enthusiastic about chemistry. As a nursing student, I appreciated the effort she made to make the class relevant to a healthcare professional. I will totally take her again!!
If you struggle with Chemistry, take it from Mary! She was an amazing teacher and truly cared about her students. She provides written notes, so you don't have to read the book. I only referenced it a couple of times. She also has online lectures if you can't make it to class. She really tries to make you succeed! Gives extra credit! Take from her!
Taking Bio-Organic Chem online was a little nerve racking. Lots of studying! But she provides PDFs of every lecture and videos of her lectures on each chapter which helps immensely. You do have to write a 7 page paper (single spaced), which I thought was an excessive requirement for a community college level class, but overall, highly recommended.
Chemistry is hard, there is no doubt about that but Mary is THE most amazing professor! If you can get into her class do it! She takes the time to go over concepts so you understand the material and if you don't, she'll explain it until you do. You can tell she wants her students to succeed by her passion for teaching. No book necessary.
Amazing teacher, always willing to help out. Gives you the material you need to learn in good lectures, you just need to do you part and study. No textbook necessary, she offers online videos that she makes that are really helpful. 10/10 recommend.
I loved Marys class! She wants you to succeed so she provides you with plenty of material to help you through homework and to prepare for tests. This is my second time taking Chemistry and I actually enjoyed it this time around!
Lots of extra credit opportunities and more tests than I was used to, but she was a pretty good teacher. Definitely very invested in her classes and students, although the class periods were less structured than you'd expect. Attendance was optional and she had lectures online as well as worksheets for practice and lecture notes for review.
What can I even say about Mary? She is quite possibly the best professor I have EVER had at SLCC so far. You cannot just breeze through this class without putting in the work, but if you are diligent you will be okay. Do all the worksheets, and watch her lecture videos. I have honestly never seen a more organized online class, TAKE HER!!!
I took this class online. The expectations are very clear and easy to follow. She gives you a ton of help with the material by posting videos of her doing the homework, going through the pre-test exam and chapter concept papers. I LOVED that she did this because I could go see exactly how she did if I got stuck. I def recommend this class.
You have a test on about three chapters every two weeks. That is a bit ridiculous. She does post videos of her doing the homework. The worksheets were of no help to me. They did not relate to test questions at all. She will drop your lowest test score at the end of the semester. She offers 15 extra credit points.
Mary made the tests super hard the class average on every test was below a 60 considering it was a online class there was more do to then a lecture heavy class. tons of homework 6 tests and a 7 page research paper. I didn't like the format of the class and if you want to pass you better just take it on campus because I guarantee you wont get a A
Mary was by far the best teacher I have ever had. You have worksheets for every chapter that will prepare you for the test along with pre tests. there are 5 exams plus and optional final (she drops your lowest test score) up to 15 points xtra credit also!!!! online or in class you have access to so many resources to help you succeed in her class.
I really can't say enough good things about Mary. I was scared to death of chemistry because of poor math skills. She makes a difficult subject incredibly straightforward. She took every chapter and summarized it into notes that SHE GIVES YOU. Her exams are only on what she teaches you. No surprises. Don't walk, RUN to sign up for Mary Alvarez.
Professor Mary is one of the best teachers I have ever had! She actually cares about her students and she wants you to succeed! Her lectures are so amazing and she explains everything at a speed that helped me to understand what she was talking about!
Mary is by far the best science teacher I have ever had. She answered all my questions and would leave my side without making sure I knew what to do. I highly recommend her.
No. I took her twice and still struggled. I asked questions and she didnt responds other students did. She has videos on canvas and those videos are from 6 years ago. Doesnt really match along very well with the newer lectures or worksheets. Her tests are very hard. Cant even get partial credit if you do the problem right but get answer wrong. NO!
She's awesome, made chem online actually doable when I thought I would need to take it on campus to understand it. Chem is a really hard subject for me, but you can reach out to her anytime. She responds quickly and you can meet her on campus. Grade is a mixture of assignments and exams so it's nice it's not purely exams. She does offer EC too.
Dr. Alvarez is an amazing teacher. Her lectures are thorough and guidance abundant. I'm not going into chemistry but I would consider it if she was teaching every course. She wants students to pass, and if you come to class and take good notes, you will. Mary is a wonderful person and a great lecturer. Take her if you can.
I really enjoyed taking chemistry with Mary! She was always very clear when teaching the concepts. She allowed class time for us to work out problems and ask for help. She was always in a good mood and so kind!
Mary makes a really hard class not seem so hard. Even though it was difficult, she was so organized and clear in her videos that it made things make sense somehow. Lots of homework but if you stay on top of her timeline, it doesn't seem so bad and prepares you for the tests. She gives study guides and practice exams which help your grade.
This was one of the best online classes I've ever taken. Mary was super organized, and even recorded her lecture classes for you to watch. There's quite a few homework assignments but they're not bad if you stay on top of everything each week. And she doesn't mind late work. Highly recommend.
TAKE MARY FOR CHEM!!! I promise you she is absolutely the best chemistry teacher you will find at SLCC. I took it a previous semester from a different prof and failed miserably. I took Mary online for summer semester and she is awesome! Super detailed lectures, offers extra credit, and drops your lowest test score. She makes chemistry way less hard
Professor Alvarez is amazing and gives you every tool you need to succeed. There's written lectures, recorded video lectures, online homework and videos of her doing the homework, practice exams with videos, and then 5 exams. There is an optional final exam that replaces your lowest score. You have to participate in discussions in canvas.
Mary was by far the best teacher. You have pdf lecture notes & worksheets for every chapter that will help you. There are also pretest before the 5 exams and optional final (she drops your lowest test score) 15 points extra credit also! Online or in-class she was always available to explain anything if needed.
Mary is such a smart and quirky teacher. She puts a huge emphasis on the O-chem aspect and gives 5 exams and 1 final. ALL multiple choice and drops the lowest. Requires a 7 page single space paper and uses mastering chem. Very nice and friendly and gives you all the tools to be successful!
I didnt use the textbook at all. However her tests are not like her pretests at all. I thought I was doing great but then her tests came and I did not do as great as I thought I did. She moves very fast and DOES NOT let you take any notes on the test like other professors so you have to MEMORIZE every equation. Which is hundreds in chemistry
Mary is so great. She gives amazing lecture videos for every homework assignment & practice test. There is lots of optional homework. But if you do them, you will be ready for the tests. Shes willing to meet outside of class. She went over my entire test with me when I unexpectedly bombed it. This class is hard no matter who you take it from.
I loved mary as a professor, she was so caring and really knew the material and was such a great teacher.
I was registered as an online student for Chem 1120. Marys video lectures are outdated and some lectures were non existent! Her handwriting is illegible. This is absolutely unacceptable when we are required to memorize complex structures. I found several mistakes on her keys and she did not respond timely to email. Be prepared to work hard!
I was so nervous to take chemistry because I knew it would be very challenging, Mary made this class bareable for me though! She sets you up for success by having practice tests, videos on how to do the homework, and practice problems everyday. Mary is so nice and understands that this class is HARD, so she tries her best to help you. Take it!
Taking this class online was a challenge. She really does want each of her students to succeed but it can be a bit challenging with some of her pre-recorded lectures & her ineligible handwriting. She doesn't typically respond to emails in a timely manner either. Other than that, I thought she did a pretty good job teaching the material.
Mary is awesome, she has perfect lecture outlines and videos of her doing all the assignments and exams! So I would definitely recommend taking her.
Mary was Amazing! She was great at moving the class online due to COVID. Her online lectures were all posted and accessible after the lecture time, the canvas page was organized and easy to navigate. She was kind and answered all questions with patience and made everyone excited. She was great at explaining the materials. 10/10 would recommend.
Mary might be a good in person teacher, but online she sucks. Leaves many many students behind as she only see 1 or 2 students understanding the lesson, she assumes everyone else is, which was never he case. I spent more time teaching myself on youtube than from her. I wouldn't recommend. Also not good at explaining, she will only show examples.
As with any online class, teaching yourself the material is a huge part of that. Mary provides lecture notes and videos going over all the material. She outlines the tests for you so you know what to study. If you put in the time to study, you will get an A! I would 10/10 recommend taking chem from Mary any day!
If you want to get a good grade in chemistry,TAKE IT FROM MARY! This was my 2nd time taking chem & there is no comparison on how much better it went with a teacher that wants you to understand & succeed. This class takes a LOT of effort on your part but if you're willing to put in the work, Marys the way to go! I wouldnt take it from anyone else!
Mary should never ever teach online school. I am sure she is a sweet lady, however her online teaching is incredibly poor. You will end up googling everything. Her videos have not been updated since 2016! And she states in the "side notes" they haven't been updated so research how to figure out the rest of what to do. My mind was blown away......
Mary is a very talented teacher. She gives you a lot of tools to try to help you to succeed. It's a difficult class (it was difficult for me) but she is on your side to help you understand and do the best you can. I'd absolutely recommend Mary.
Mary was really great. I took her class online and it wasnt the smartest choice but its good. She has her class set up really well snd provides good lecture notes, her lecture videos and homework videos are really great as well. 5 midterms and a final, drops the lowest. Theyre all close book and really hard so be prepared. Chemistry is just hard.
Be prepared for the class that will knock you out of being able to become a nurse. Her exams are way too difficult class is way to fast paced
I would like to preface this with I did not do well in this class. Mary however is an amazing professor who wants to see you succeed. If you reach out and ask for help she will give it. Mary is intelligent and provides quirky stories that pertain to each lecture to help you remember material. If I had to take this class again I would take her 100%.
I had a great online chemistry experience w/ Mary. Her classes were well organized & easy to navigate. She has a great lecture speaking voice. She taught only the material necessary for our foundational understanding of chem. The practice exams are helpful. My best advice, watch her lectures over & over. I got an A-. WORKED 4 IT.
Mary is great and really knows her stuff and explains it well but Chemistry is really hard on its own and she outs trick questions and makes even harder exams for students while claiming to be rude except that CHEM is hard and nobody appreciates trick questions on exams. Exam averages were 64-74%. Find someone better if you have the option to.
Professor Alvarez was a great professor. I took her for my Chemistry lecture online. She gives great lectures and she's really great at explaining complex concepts in a way that you can understand. She gives you lots of extra credit opportunities and you can drop your lowest scoring test at the end of the semester. She is very accessible.
her lectures are loooonnng and so boring. Way too much weight on her exams she could very easily do more quizzes average scores for her tests are about 50.0 out of 100
Mary is an amazing professor all around but this is a HARD CLASS! Mary made each class enjoyable and always was open to helping her students. The only thing I didn't like was how she would purposely trick you on exams when Chemistry is hard enough. I recommend taking this class from Mary but beware! STUDY STUDY STUDY!!!
Professor Alvarez wants you to succeed! This class was very hard for me, but her lectures were very helpful and straight forward about what we needed to know for the exams. She also posts videos for the practice exams and homework to help you better understand the content and get the correct answers. Remember to STUDY!
I took this is Fall of 2020 where it was an online webcast class. I really loved Mary's attitude, helpfulness, and the ability to take this course at your own pace. Unfortunately, I was at my wit's end with all of the pandemic and weather mishap hubbub so I gave up. She was so kind to help me with an "I" until I finished. Wonderful course but hard!
By far the most difficult class I've taken yet but Alvarez does a great job approaching the contents of the course and explaining in detail. Has good sense of humor and is very understanding when it comes to late work. Saw someone complain about trick questions but I think that's not true. She warns and preps you for all questions.STUDYING REQUIRED
Professor Alvarez truly cares about her students and their success in her class. She was always available to answer my (many) questions, very encouraging when I was having a hard time figuring things out, and tries her best to make the information easy to understand. She's truly a great teacher and I highly recommend taking this class from her!
Mary is a really amazing professor, her lectures are easy to follow and she always ensures we are understanding before moving on. She will usually go over simpler ideas before getting into the bigger ideas, just as a reminder, which I thought to be really helpful. But you really do have to stay on top of the lectures/ online work.
The best
This is Professor Alvarez's first time back teaching the Chem Lab, so she has rearranged some stuff to make the class more efficient. This has been my favorite lab as the pre and post-lab work are not super time-consuming. Attendance is mandatory as you must be present to perform the lab. It's a great class overall.
Professor Alvarez has tailored this course for pre-medical professionals, meaning she only gives you what you need and not much more than that. If you study the material she gives, you should have no problem getting a good grade. Not to say that the subject matter isn't challenging because it is but you are given all the necessary tools.
I feel Ms. Alvarez gives you every opportunity to do well in her class. She has videos to walk you through every step of the homework and the practice tests on top of her lecture videos. There are opportunities for extra credit as well. The exams are only about 20 questions and she'll drop your lowest test, so you may not have to take the final.
First, this class has been the hardest class I have taken but with that being said, Mary makes it as easy and as organized as she can to help you be successful. The lecture videos, homework videos, and practice exam videos are so helpful. There are so many resources given to you, take advantage of them. You definitely have to put in the time!
I took this class online and this professor offers amazing lecture videos, lecture notes, practice exams and practice worksheets. This professor also offers multiple extra credit opportunities and does not deduct points for any late assignments. This professor is amazing and really cares about her students success (lowest exam is dropped)
Mary was so good at teaching and explaining chemistry. I have never understood chemistry before but she goes at a pace where she explains the steps and thought process very thoroughly. As long as you watch the lectures and do the homework, YOU WILL PASS.
You will have to decide if an online class is right for you, but Professor Alvarez is still a great teacher. She has something that many teachers do not, a passion for teaching.
This class has great structure and is very well organized which is so helpful for an online class. She gives some freedom for taking the exams but don't wait until the last minute to do so. If you do the homework and the practice exams you will do great on the exams. I would absolutely recommend this professor!
I took this class online, which I would not recommend but I got through with a B. Mary mentions multiple times that she isn't trying to trick you into choosing the right answer, however, she mentions her intentions are to test you, which basically means the questions are tricky. Take your time on her tests!
I was in Marys online chem 1110 course and i totally recommend it. Mary has a very clear set up and easy access to everything. I didn't find the online textbook helpful and at the beginning spent hours and hours each day reading it and not doing good on the tests. instead watch her lectures and read the notes and you will succeed!
She's not only a great chemist, she is a great educator. The setup of the class is really helpful and I really felt like she wants her students to be successful and makes it possible for her students to do so. Overall, loved the experience, was very suprised to have had so much fun doing chemistry, and left with an A. Highly reccomend.
I may be biased, since this is my 4th time taking this class. I took a 5-year break from school, and now I'm back, which is why I had to take this class. SHE GIVES YOU ALL THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO SUCCEED. There's printable lecture notes provided and past recorded lecture videos on ALL assignments. Best part: she drops your lowest exam
I was nervous to take an online chemistry class, but I think Mary presents the material in the best way possible. Her lectures are easy to follow, making it bearable, even in an online format. The class is self-paced, which is really helpful. Chemistry as a whole is challenging, but Mary makes it as easy as she possibly can, given the material.
Mary is very knowledgeable and loves what she does. This course has a lot of helpful resources. The lecture videos are pre recorded which allows you to watch them several times to really grasp the material. There are also recorded homework videos and practice exam videos to follow along to. This is a challenging but rewarding class.
This was an online course but is by far the best online class I have done yet. I have really enjoyed this course. She has notes as well as videos going over practice problems, has practice exams that allow you to go above and beyond with your studying and do the best you can. Great feedback and easy to get in contact with.
Professor Alvarez really cares about her students. As long as you communicate with her she is willing to guide you and help you pass the course to move forward with your career path. I was unmotivated by the end of the semester because I thought I wasn't going to pass the course, but she motivated me to not give up! Truly an amazing person!
The best Chemistry teacher I have ever had. If you struggle with understanding chemistry please try taking a course with Mary, she gives you so many resources to use. And she is so helpful, I never really understood until I took a course from her. She will not waste your time! Multiple choice only exams ;)
Chemistry is HARD!!! Mary is an incredible professor. I highly recommend taking this class with easy classes! you have to put in a lot of time and effort understand chemistry. I made a mistake taking 2 hard classes on top of this one and it nearly killed me last semester. She does a lot of homework
I LOVE HER! Took this class in the summer and was dreading it, but with hard work I was able to get an A-! She offers extra credit and has in depth lectures that really help digest the dense content. Be ready to work hard and ASK QUESTIONS! She offers times that you can meet 1 on 1 with her. Take advantage of it! You got this, good luck!
She will TEST you and be 'tricky'. That said, she does every homework and practice exam problem. She has pre-recorded lecture notes, extra credit, discussion points and tosses your lowest test score ( don't have to take the final). Only take if you are willing to work very hard. She gives you all you need, but it is up to you to EARN your grade.
Mary was great as an online chem teacher. She has a good layout. She makes videos of her doing the homework with students and it was one of the most helpful things in the whole class. I felt like the textbook was not as related to the homework as I wanted it to be, but the videos changed the game when I started using them.
Professor Alvarez's CHEM1110 is challenging but highly rewarding. The lectures and resources are top-notch, and unstuck AI was a game-changer for my study prep. Attend office hours, review the material, and you'll do great!
AMAZING!!!! She had videos going along homework problems to help you know the material, She was lenient with due dates with the understanding that we have a lot going on. unlimited attempts on homework which was nice for extra practice as well as keeping my grade up. Don't get too far behind, plenty of resources to get the grade you want.
This class is straight forward but not an easy A. Be prepared to memorize a list of different things that you will be tested on. She has a lot of expectations. If you struggle with teaching yourself, I suggest not taking her online. You don't get the chance to see what you got wrong on exams unless it's reviewed with her.
I loved Mary. This was my first Chemistry class and it was definitely difficult, but she wants you to succeed. Make sure to take advantage of the practice exams, follow along on the lecture slides, and DO. THE. WORKSHEETS! They are an asset in succeeding in this class. Multiple choice exams, clear expectations, so so helpful and funny/friendly.
She is queen of chemistry!!! Amazing at breaking down complex ideas into something that actually makes sense. Her class was very fun and interesting. I actually learned through her. TAKE HER CLASS.
