This class may be a little bit demanding, but it is vey easy because of the helpfulness of Dr. Leiby. She grants extensions on papers, and will help you look at things critically. I would take her for any English course.

A very nice teacher, albeit a tad demanding for her assignments. Is eager to help and explain away any problems students come to her with, though, and is extremeley forgiving with her grading as long as you put in the effort.

I took Dr. Leiby when I was on the IGETC program, to obtain my English requirement for transfer to a UC. I just want to state that Dr. Leiby fully prepared me not only for the UC system, but the real world. She was truly influential, and inspiring.

There are three tests, that are not that hard, and one final essay. She gives you "hints" what will be on the tests. She is very sweet and always willing to help out students! If I were you, I would try to take her, you'll learn alot.

Dr. Leiby is the best English teacher; however, she has really high expectations. She makes the work easy because she explains what she wants in detail. Plus she gives you chances to change your grade. Shes the best. She prepares you for the future.

She's pretty hard, but she's not as strict as she coems off as. You read a LOT of material with have little time to discuss it (she goes really fast), make sure to read EVERYTHING. Her lectures are boring, group work topics dull and she keeps you late.

She makes the class sound difficult, but the class isnt as hard as she makes it sound. She kinda freaked me out personality wise, but she's caring and understanding. Will let you turn in late essays as long as you tell her before hand.

A LOT of reading! lots of quizzes, but she gives u the chance to make up ur own ?s. Term paper is min. 6 pgs. but she will take time w/ u if ur struggling. she wants u to succeed. do the read'g and develop relationship w/ her and you'll do fine.

The hardest teacher in Florida I heard. You would learn from a hard teacher. It's a good thing because it is challenging. She expects a lot.

It's a tough class, but she sets realistic goals to prepare you for the UC's and tough schools out there, not to mention the real world. She's kinda hot too, but strict about what she wants and will help you if you need it.

She genuinely cares about her students grades. Will allow some extra credit, but its not needed as long as you PAY ATTENTION and ANNOTATE your books. test material is never a surprise. She tells you exactly what to expect. I would recommend her

Dr. Lieby is an excellent teacher, highly knowledgeable in her field. She is a very sensitive and caring teacher and goes out of her way to help struggling students. She is tough, but she helps prepare you for the road head. I strongly remmend her as a teacher!

have had her for 3 other english classes. lots of close reading, but understands the pains of students and cares. hard if you don't really care about the class, but easy if you are interested. may have drama, but who doesn't? and knows her stuff!

As much as I liked her class, I hated the fact that she brought her liberal fem ideas into the class. We're here to learn about the English language, not why men are evil. Regardless, I learned a lot in this class. If you're a hard worker, it's a good class to take.

She's a die hard liberal, femminist, multicultualist and does not hesitate to let her veiws become known in class. Suprisingly, she will not penalize you for disagreement. She gave me an "A" even though she disagreed with one of my papers.

Very down to earth and understanding. She will help anybody that asks, whether it be about school or life in general.

The Best Professor on campus. I love her left wing views. I love when she speaks her mind, also very open minded.

I love Prof. Leiby. She helped me overcome my fear/anxiety of writing. She is more analogous to a Phil Jackson in bring the best out of her students ONLY if the students bring their work and dedication to the court. I highly recommend any of her classes and get ready to write!

There is a butt load of reading in this class, and a lot of it is middle english. If you like the subject matter-which is medieval Brit Lit. then you will like this class a lot because she knows her**** very well, and her classes are engaging.

Professor Leiby is a very easy teacher if you pay attention in class and do the work she ask's of you. You basically make up your own quizzes so its hard for you to fail. She is very feminist so sometimes that can get annoying. BAsically though if you do the work and participate you should be fine. Also she is very helpful when people need extnsion

I had Dr. Leiby two years ago for eng 1A and that was much better than this last semester. She is quite ill and I'm not sure why she is teaching in such poor physical health. Her pain has now caused her to be quite cranky and irritable. She's a cool lady but I don't recommend taking her. Very difficult class.

Covers alot of material. She does bend over back ward to help her students though. Make sure you like to read, ask questions in class, and follow MLA style writing and you will pass.

Since the first day i saw her, i could expect her to be a great teacher. SHe is such a nice woman and cares alot about students. she gives u the chance to revise the essay. not really tough but a lot of reading assignemts at the begining of the semester and quizzes based on them. Dr. Leiby is by far one of my favorite professors ever!! I have had her for Eng 15A, 1C, and 40A. She was fantastic for each class I had with her. As for the person below me, pay no attention to him/her. She cares so much about her students. Her class is not easy, but if you come to class and do the work you will be set.

Her class is kind of hard since she grade them seriously, but she let you revise the essays to get higher grade. As long as you work, you'll get an A. She's clear and will help you with questions, just drop in her office/talk after class. She's awesome, what you learned you'll definitely use. I took her for 1A, and now 1C seems like a piece of cake

This was a time intensive class. A lot of interesting reading and of course, an extensive amount of writing. Dr. Leiby is one of the most concerned Professors I've ever encountered. ok teacher. I took the honors section. Theres a service learning component of the course but its only ten hours of service that you can do anywhere you want. There isn't much homework but a lot of in-class work. Stay away if your attendance is spotty. 6 essays grades really hard but lets students revise papers until you get an A. last essay is EASY

honestly, there is a gratutious amount of reading, but anyone taking this class is most likely an english/lit. major so what do you except? besides reading this class is a walk in the park, really the exams are not difficult and there is only one term paper in which you can write about whatever you fancy. take her, you'll learn a great deal!

This teacher is amazing. She is extremely concerned with her students and she has an immeasurable amount of knowledge on English Literature. She is an inspiriation in herself and really wants every student to succeed in her class. If you need an extention for a paper she understands and will give you an extention if you ask ahead of time.I love her

Dr. Leiby is the ONLY reason that i am prepared for a four year university. She was so down to earth and such a great instructer. She has strong opinions but listens to EVERYTHING her students have to say about the reading. You will be lucky to take one of her classes.

I took her for English 1B Honors, and she's an exceptional teacher. Dr. Leiby is flexible with essay deadlines, answers all questions, and it is really apparent that she is an intellectual. She is articulate and exteremely knowledgeable about everything Lit. She also has the most incredible life story and is a true inspiration to her students.

This class is horribly boring. The reading material is not too bad but there is a lot of it. Dr. Leiby is a super nice lady, but the class itself can put you to sleep. The exams are pretty easy, only 3, and there is only one term paper that's 5-6 pages. As long as you do the reading, you will get an A guaranteed.

Dr. Leiby, in short, very liberal, talks about herself most of the class period, and has extreme feminist views. I'm not sure how most male students would feel comfortable in this class setting. The reading content is mostly about debatable political views on government, society, and religion. However, she is quick to help you out. Strange teacher.

Dr. Leiby is one of the best teachers I have had. She will let you turn in any essay at any time. You can even turn everything on the last day of school if you wish. She has easy tests that she allows the students to create, and every class is in the computer lab, making it very easy to look up information (yes, even during a test).

Overal a must have class for any english major, she goes in depth into the readings and provides great feedback on essays. Great class and teacher, but be prepaired to work!

There's a lot of reading, but you can get an A pretty much by showing up and paying attention. Most of the class is group work, which she gives almost everyone 100% on just for doing it. She's really nice and lets her students get away with almost anything.

Brit Lit is a "weed-out" course, separating English majors from non-majors. The reading load is very demanding, and Leiby holds her students to high standards. However, if you're a serious English major, I doubt you'll find a better prof. at El Co. Dr. Leiby is extremely well read and cares as much about her students' success as about literature.

I took her for eng1A &she is the best english teacher ever! i had taken another english class and got an F but she totally changes your perspective of how english is fun! You have to read the books and all the quizzes are from the students so basically when you read you have to write question to present. you can get extensions for every essay due

I will admit the topics of this course are not the most interesting, but Dr. Leiby keeps students intrigued. Her tests are not extremely simple, but if you read the assigned reading you shouldn't have a problem. She is such a kind woman and always tried to make herself available. Although Dr. Leiby is not my fav english teacher, she is definitely one of the best here in ECC. She is extremely helpful if you are committed to theclass, and she offers LOTs of chances to get extra credits. Stu can revise and get back points up to B grade, they can get A if they turn in all requirements essays. Stu can make up their own quizzes.

Most helpful professors took her 1A & 1B honors class she lays all the info out the very first day so you know exactly what you are in for. Although it requires a lot of reading and papers she allows you to revise them and get a higher grade then before. Never had this. She also actually cares about the students and wants to help. Take her!

Pros: Allows make up work. Pretty easy on grading essays compared to others. Cons: Takes a long time discussing a novel or a few poems. Very bring. Most of the material was taught in HS.If you want to pass, you HAVE to come to class, take notes, pay attention, and READ.

English is not my first language and is never my strength. Dr. Leiby clearly made me rethink myself when it comes to English. A major improvement after taking her class. The best English teacher I have ever had. If you are willing to learn and eager to absorb new knowledge, you should take her and come to every class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Dr. Leiby is a great teacher, easy grader, soft and hard deadlines but she allows for some wiggle room if something comes up, although I have to agree with the other comments she does talk about her personal life and political views way more than is necessary.

I completely hate english and everything that comes with it but with Dr. Leiby's extensive knowledge and clear passion for the subject I was able to get through the semester without killing myself. I learned so much in the subject and for myself as a student. I appreciate her teaching style.

Great teacher! Yes, she does talk too much about her personal life, but it didn't bother me too much. There is a LOT of reading, and it gets a little overwhelming sometimes. Lots of essays to write, too. Tests and quizzes are pretty easy, though. As long as you do the reading, you'll be fine.

*English 1A* you do a total of 6 essays, they're all fairly easy and her grading is honest (You can re-do it for a better grade). You must read what she assigns or prepare to fail your quizzes/test. She made up for everything I didn't learn in High School, which I'm grateful for having the opportunity. Great Professor ! Take ! I EARNED an A. :)

She will be cool if she didn't talk so much. I don't like the fact that she always have us do things at the last minute, then rush us out. She needs to pay attention to the time and stop talking do much about pointless things.

Dr. Leiby is the best teacher I have ever had. This class may change your academic life forever. You'll learn how to write a 3 pg essay exam in 1.5 hrs. If you flunk the first exam, you can still earn an "A" if you work hard. While it's possible, I do not recommend taking this class during the winter if you have a part-time job. Highly recommended.

She is very understanding and realizes that "things" happens in life. She'll work with you as long as you with her. The students make up questions for the quiz. If you and a couple of other people don't like the question, it will be thrown out or saved as a bonus question.Talks about herself a lot

She's an excellent teacher & only wants to help you. It seems difficult in the beginning but you just have to stay on top of your work & be sure to read! Don't worry if you don't do so good on your first essays because you can raise up your grade at the end with your portfolio. I really enjoyed her class & highly recommend it if you want to learn.

English majors, you must take Dr. Leiby sometime. Everything she says is something worth post-it noting. It is demanding course yet a necessary course (any course taught by her) nonetheless.

Do not write your essays the night before!!! Those who do tend to drop her class with a W. She is a professor willing to help but you have to see her during office hours. Stay on top of your game and you will be fine.

One of the best professors, and teachers overall, I've had. Sure, she's a bit tough when it comes to grading, but it really gets you ready for what'll come later on in college. If you're an English Major, take her!!! Doctor Leiby is the best English instructor I have ever taken. She's tough, knowledgeable, and crystal clear in every class work she assigns. Don't ever be intimidated by whatever feedback she gives you, her tough love prepares you for whatever English class you will take at a four-year University.

She's a tough grader but you can earn it back at the end with the revisions and portfolio. Read the assigned readings because there will be a quiz (10 quizzes in total). There are 5 essays: 1 group essay, 1 about the novel, 2 research paper, and the final in-class essay. Don not procrastinate!

It was a great experience taking Leiby for English 15B and English 28. I took her twice cause yeah it was that good. Just expect to read a lot of texts and poetry.

Needed to take this class for a transfer req and it counts as honors, but I probably wouldn't have taken it as an honors class alone. You have to put in a lot of time for reading and writing. There are 3 essays + 1 in class essay, & 1 research paper (which you can use a previous essay for, but add research). Lots of in class analysis exercises too

Dr. Leiby is the best English teacher I've had and an incredible woman. Her class is very straightforward. My favorite part about her is that she gives in depth feedback on the essays without making you feel like you suck. I wish she taught 1C, I have learned so much from her!

She's a really good teacher, but she will go on the longest tangents about her life pretty much every class. She grades papers pretty tough, but is flexible on deadlines. Pay attention to your MLA and grammar! With that said, I am going to be taking her again for her English 1B honors class because, ultimately, she really is a great professor.

Dr. Leiby is one of the most brilliant Professors at ECC. Took her for 40A. Letters of the Founding Fathers, segments of Walden, segments of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and "Life in the Iron Mills." This course has great readings. Woof! She can answer any question and knows American Literature and US History deep. Course is reading heavy, so stay focused.

Dr. Leiby is an amazing teacher, at first I wasn't a fan of her class because the way she taught.. After I saw her during office hours and talked to her, she's very understanding and is more then happy to let you edit exam essays if you speak to her. She's a very sweet sweet professor.

Dr. Leiby's 15B class is great. Three exams, 1 term paper, and some group work. Of course, you will have to read the works from the writers you are studying (It's an English class- if you don't want to read, why are you an English major? Just saying) Not a lot of hw besides the reading. DO the reading and you'll do great. Will take again!

A lot of reading, some group work. Group work is not hard. Reading is pretty much the only homework, but it's a lot and takes a long time. She makes it very clear what will be on the test, so there's no excuse for not getting a good grade unless you don't study or if you're bad at in class essays.

Dr. Leiby is a great professor that is really passionate about what she teaches. She gives a lot of readings but it's an English course so that should be a given. She is pretty lenient on quizzes and really cares about her students but it is a work heavy course so be prepared to work.

She is a really nice professor. Exams aren't hard if you pay attention, she goes over every quote. So she wanders a little in her lectures, big deal. Less time to assign work! She has incredible knowledge of the books, authors, poems. Tons of chances to make up work. Who else lets you make your own pop quiz? Plus, she gives full points for trying!

Dr. Leiby is caring and intelligent professor. Her lectures are helpful and she only tests on things she has mentioned during class. The work load is manageable, but there is a good amount of reading. There is group work, but nothing overbearing. I truly enjoyed this class. Thank you, Dr. Leiby!

Dr. Leiby is one of the most caring and understandable professors at El Camino college, sure the readings are a big load but that's what English Majors signed up for. The readings are actually very interesting and she lets the class make up the pop quizzes she is very fair and overall a great professor. I would definitely take her again.

She knows her stuff inside and out, she will make you a stronger writer, and she allows you to massively improve your grade through essay revisions. Yes, she's a little wacky but she gives her everything, every day.

Amazing. The most passionate and caring teacher. Yes, shes a tough grader, but it only makes you a better writer. Do your work and correct your mistakes on your essays and you will be fine. Essays account for a really big portion of your grade so just make sure to correct your mistakes and get the highest grade you can. She will help if struggling

Dr. Leiby really cares about her students. She's very open & understanding. That being so, she's very forgiving about accepting late work. Reading and writing makes up the bulk of English1A, so be ready for it. She's very passionate about education (and liberal politics), as her many opinionated lectures will show.

Dr, Leiby is by far the best teachers I have ever had. She is not a tough on homework and quizes. Just do your stuff and you will pass. The whole point of college is to succeed and go further in life and she will help you through every step! She is very helpful when it comes to writing a paper, so i highly recommend her! She also considers how costly school can be and makes her resources easily available. Dr. Leiby will make you a better writer and change the way you view and value education. Professor Leiby was an incredibly attentive teacher despite her being swamped by several classes worth of students at any given time. I'm grateful to have had her as my instructor for English 1BH. She is thorough when it comes to MLA formatting though, so make sure you don't BS that part of your essay. Seriously, do your works cited right.

Dr. Leiby is a really good and easy professor. There will not be another easy professor like her and I do not mean that in a bad way. She literally lets the class make quizzes and tests. The only hard part about her class is trying to stay awake; she literally will take the whole first hour of class talking about her life. Oh and for essays EASY!!!

Dr. Leiby was one of my favorite professors! She was very caring for her students and understanding just as long as you communicated with her. She does lecture a lot, but if you are a good listener, you will understand that it is related to the lesson. The class moves based on how everyone is doing, so be sure to voice yourself if you did not read.

Dr. Leiby does sometimes talk about herself, but its inspiring. You vote on the weekly quiz questions. She answers questions well. If you cant handle A LOT of reading, dont take this class. TAKE NOTES during lectures! An A is attainable, you just have to work for it. She loves writing letters of rec, so work hard if you want a good one!

Mary Ann Leiby was the greatest English teacher I ever had. She gave me the best feedback possible on all my essays and allowed all students to resubmit all essay at the end of the semester. I took her during the fall 2020 online class during COVID and she was so understanding. Overall great teacher and provides phenomenal feedback.

Took this course over winter so it was a lot of homework because you would have an essay due every week along with other assignments. If it is taken during the longer semesters it will not be as overwhelming. Professor Leiby is very considerate and if you need more time, she will give it to you. Gives great feedback and really wants you to succeed!

I hardly had any problems with her. Shes understanding and nice, but dont think you can just show up and get an A. You actually have to do the readings; if you do what she asks, the class isnt too bad at all and youll score high.

Loved taking English 1A with Dr. Leiby! She actually cares about her students success and sets them up to succeed! She gives great feedback and allows you to correct your mistakes on the assignments she has graded. Shes very open and honest, and there when you need her help. You cant just show up and expect an A, though. You need to work for it!

Dr. Leiby is incredibly smart and holds her Ph.D. in British Literature, making her course flush with different reading materials weekly. She holds extensive knowledge of each of the authors she teaches, so if you have any questions, she will be more than happy to talk to you on the subject. She is very lenient on due dates!! I loved this teacher. Despite a tough semester ( personal) , she made school worth it. She grades heavily but offers many chances to redo work. Some students were mean to her, but she was very helpful, especially during office hours. When I had the flu and thought I had COVID, she was very supportive and helped me out with all the class work.

Prof. Leiby is super knowledgeable and passionate about lit. Tests and quizzes were on reading material, so def. get the books and do the readings! Very flexible and understanding about deadlines, if you ask for an extension, you'll get one! If you do the reading and pay attention in class, you will almost definitely get an A.
