Okay, first of all, English is not my first language. So I was very afraid before the term started cuz I thought I might fail this course. BUT I got pretty good mark(70%)!!!! He looks pretty young altough he's in his 40's. I haven't answered his Qs during lecture even once. I alwayz just shut my mouth during lecture. But he gave me good marks! :)
Attend to lecture because he takes attendance; very interesting readings but i think he is very picky on essays......probably im not a good writer...and he is an editor if i didnt forget
Interesting readings, all regarding the same topic from different perspectives, i enjoyed!. Yes, he is a hard marker!!. He knew the names of the entire class by the end of the term, approachable.
Great prof. I was pretty worried going into this class but he made it intriguing and fun. The material was definately different from the typical topics I had learned previously..it was educational and taught us how to look at things from different perspectives. very funny, loved him!
Great prof, thought i would dead when i first walked in (english isnt my first language) and ended up with a B-. Just go to classes and he pretty much gives you 15% for free.
likes to ramble but funny. too strict on attendance. topic really interesting
He is an ok prof, the course (eng110) itself sort of had no objective to begin with so im guessing it isnt his fault that it seemed like he was rambling with no point, but um, if you get this prof don't be scared hes not half bad, I suck at english and ended up with a B+ or something.
I really enjoyed Sean as a teacher. I found him hilarious and he made the class interesting with his research topic. I never found him too strict, although he expects a lot, and he gave us all the tools needed to write a research paper. I absolutely recommend Sean as a teacher, you won't regret it!
Super nice prof and fair marker. take it.
Sean was my favourite first year prof. Very approachable and helpful- you just need to ask. I wouldn't say he's an easy marker, but there are marks for attendance. He makes class interesting, I'd recommend the course
He has a keen interest in his ASTU topic and has several papers on the topic. He is enthusiastic and funny and very approachable. He marks assignments fairly, with comments so you know what to work on in future assignments. Would recommend his classes.
Just take him :)
Lots of little assignments but not difficult, clear lecturer, fair marker overall not a bad prof.
Sean is passionate about what he teaches, has sense of humour, respects students, is a fair marker and clear about his expectations. Very unique person. Interesting class/topic, would recommend.
Very interesting professor and class. Topic made a generic, mandatory class manageable. Sean is a good professor, funny and a fair marker. Would definitely recommend this class just to get the course out of the way. Compared to other profs that I've heard about, it seems that Sean is the best.
Sean is very engaging and interesting in lectures, always gives an entertaining and educating class that I enjoy going to (unlike a LOT of other profs). He is very knowledgable, helpful and really wants you to succeed. Highly recommend.
Overall an interesting professor, and person. Makes his points very clear. However, be warned, forces group projects, and grades first-years harder than usual. Minor mistakes, are major mistakes in his eyes. Take him for the content, NOT for the grade. If you can't find another class to fit, it's still a good class. DO NOT TAKE if you hate groups.
Hard marker, makes every project a group project. Can be very picky, but is a really awesome person. Funny, interesting, and hip all rolled into one. Avoid if you hate group projects though.
She is really really nice and funny. You will learn many useful stuff in her class. But she is a hard marker
Loved her class. The theme was very interesting and got a great mark, though I did work my butt off
Loved going to her classes. informative and easy going classes. Make sure to sit beside people you are willing to talk to for an entire term. She will asking you to discuss almost every single class (not that it was a bad thing!) Will definitely take again
Great lectures, she really opened my eyes to a lot of issues, and made me think. The only thing I was disappointed about was that she didn't spoon feed me on how to write an A+ paper. If you want to have an academic experience, take her class. I haven't taken a legit English course for a while, so I can't really judge the difficulty of the course.
Sean is hilarious in her lectures. She's very inspirational and makes dry English material interesting. At first I felt stung by her hard grading, but take her feedback and learn from it (to apply to the next). Group projects but not always mandatory (the big ones). Only one major essay, can be w a partner. She's an amazing prof! READ THE BOOK BTW
Dr. Sean is an amazing prof. She works so hard to make her class interesting and really cares about your learning. Also, if you have a valid reason why you need an extension on a certain assignment, she is completely understanding.
Sean Saunders tries her absolute hardest to make everyone as excited about everything you read and learn about as she is. She marks a bit hard, but it's only so that her students can improve. Use what she's said and pay attention in class, she's got a lot to share.
She is amazing! Very engaging and very funny! I always looked forward to her class!
She is a very kind prof and I felt very comfortable in her class. She sometimes tends to drone off topic and her lectures get a little dry at times, but I like her nonetheless. Books aren't too important (sparknotes is enough) Fair marker. You get what ever you put into the work.
Very very good prof. Gave me second chance to improve on proposal. Remember to follow her criteria when doing work. Overall very kind prof definitely would take again.
Took children's lit with her as an elective and loved it! She was a really awesome prof and her lectures were never boring. We talked about a lot of sensitive topics but she made everyone feel really comfortable and always encouraged students to share their opinions even if they were different. Would seriously recommend this class to anyone!
Terrible lecturer. She definitely knows a lot about transgender studies but the way she tries to transfer her knowledge to her students is very harsh. By that I mean she tries to force her ideas about transgender people to cisgender students. She uses a lot of swear words in her lectures which I found inappropriate and not cool. would not recommend
She was an okay prof! The course itself was good. A lot of group assignments so if you don't like to work in groups avoid this class.
Mary Ann's lectures were awesome - she draws from her own life a lot, but in an honest and helpful way. Don't shy away from being personal in your analysis - she encourages you to draw from your own life when looking at texts. Overall a fun class with lots of participation and cool discussions.
She's very disorganized. She makes assignments more complicated than they have to be. Group projects are either a pain or really easy depending on who you are paired with/choose. But overall the whole idea of the group projects is a bad one, as one person tends to end up doing everything.
Mary Ann is a sweetheart, and she cares about her students. She's very knowledgable, that is obvious, but I found this class to be a bit dry. Really didn't learn a whole lot, and it was quite disorganized. I could have gone the entire semester without going to a single class and I still would have gotten at least a B+
She seems to care a lot about her students but she is extremely sensitive about transgender studies. She would often express provocative opinion which made the class environment uncomfortable. There are way too many group projects which were a pain in the butt. Not to mention she is an extremely hard grader. Nice prof, but would not take again.
Mary Ann is an amazing instructor - easily one of my favourites at UBC. I was dreading WRDS150 but so glad I took it with her because she made it interesting and engaging while also presenting ideas that challenged norms in the best possible ways. The topics she presented helped me connect with the material and become a better academic writer.
Amazing prof. Knows well about the course content and shows respect to students. Very approachable and gives positive and useful feedbacks.
Pretty great prof... interesting speaker and readings aren't really necessary. She does tend to go on and on and occasionally exceeds the class period. Nonetheless, she's really approachable and gives excellent feedback on assignments. Assignments are graded very fairly!
Pretty unprofessional, she came to class unprepared way too many times and would rant about petty things for too long. Also a bit strange that she apologized for being white which was unnecessary. She also prohibited us from saying "biologically male" and female. The studies we read about were interesting but she needs to be less political.
Dr. Saunders is a caring professor. The course theme was gender, which meant everything we read followed the theme of transgender identity. We had a group essay (which surprisngly went well), two essays and a final + attendance and participation. She's an easy marker and is flexible with due dates, though also a bit disorganized.
Mary-Ann is super lovely. If you care about the course- you'll get a good mark. She gives good feedback and facilitates interesting dialogue. She expects you to read a lot, but you don't have to do all of them. For my course, we had a final paper, so I only read the ones that pertained to my paper and I got an A in the course.
She was so entertaining and I absolutely loved the reading list. The topic of the class was gender and I learned things that I didn't even know I didn't know. She very obviously cared about the material and the students.
She was very inspirational and an engaging lecturer, but so disorganized it was hard to be in her class. She lost major assignments of ours twice. Most of our assignments were returned at the last minute, and one major test from the beginning of the term was never returned. All in all it was a pretty stressful experience.
Dr. Saunders had provided a fair ground for non-native English speaker a chance to pass the course. Her conversation in the class is very interesting and inspriational. She is very approachable outside of the class. I was so scared to take a wiring class at university level until I met her. Most of course work is done with a partner (like 90%).
She is an amazing prof. She tries to make WRDS150 much fun as possible. Many students know little about the topic but they will all learn a lot from this class. BTW I spent almost my entire life in a non-English speaking country, therefore taking a academic writing course freaked me out at the beginning, so trust me it is not that difficult
She is an amazing professor who cares about her students and wants everyone to do well. Her lessons were very useful and she made WRDS150 more interesting by introducing a topic that not a lot of people have studied before. Highly recommend her for the WRDS150 requirement.
Dr. Saunders is a good prof. She made WRDS, a notoriously boring class, quite interesting. The textbook is used, but not actually necessary (teaches you everything that the book covers). Recommend getting an online copy instead. My only criticism is that she struggles to stay organized/on time. Start big projects earlier so you don't go into exams.
You will be bored in these lectures, but at least she's an interesting person. You'll pass the class and get your requirement.
She is an absolute sweetheart yet she is the most disorganized professor i have ever had. She made this class extremely stressful because she did not give us back any of our work so we were unaware of our marks. She is extremely caring and passionate about the subject, but taking WRDS 150 with her was not worth the unnecessary stress.
Mary Ann Saunders is the worst professor. She never gave anything back during the semester. Not one paper. I had no idea what my mark was. I didn't know if I was getting a good mark or failing. She released our WRDS150 mark on the last day of grading period and failed me. I dont know what to say as I dont have a single grade on any paper I did.
Okay professor. I find her topic to be interesting and worthwhile.
Dr. Saunders is very nice if you find her at office hours. However, she is so disorganized in a sense that the dropboxes on canvas were wrong. There's like 3 different dropboxes for one single assignment. She also never gives back graded assignemtns. Like the term's about to end in two weeks and the grade on canvas is still N/A.
Dr Saunders was very kind and she tried making online classes as interactive as she could by many group activities. She was a good marker, not too harsh but released all our grades very late, especially the midterm. Overall, she was a sweetheart during her office hours and the topic of her class was really interesting.
I loved this class! The subject is so interesting, ESPECIALLY if you don't know anything about transgender studies. The prof is trans herself so she has a unique viewpoint and plethora of lived experiences to share with students. If you do the work it is easy to get a good grade. If you're cis/straight like me I encourage you to take this class too
Compared to other WRDS profs, Dr Saunders is great. She is pretty lenient and kind. I did not expect to end up in transgender studies and I was worried about my little knowledge in the topic, but I ended up learning quite a bit on the topic and I found it quite interesting. Great prof overall.
She made lectures about writing actually interesting and that itself is impressive. Overall I thought she was very nice and engaging, although I will agree with other reviews that the grading in terms of organization and timing wasn't the best, but she got the important things done when it mattered. Overall I thought she did a great job.
Dr. Saunders was fun and engaging throughout the term. I felt the workload was quite heavy compared to other WRDS sections, but a lot of it was for completion. She really prepares you for the final research paper throughout the course. She does take some time to return assignments, but she gives thorough, comprehensive feedback. I''d recommend!
She is so so so lovely. I took the class not knowing what to expect; and it immediately became my favourite class of the term. The only thing problem was not knowing what I received on the assignments (I think she had a lot on her plate in terms of course load). But her lectures were incredible and she has such a beautiful soul! Would take again.
Dr. Mary Ann is super caring, dedicated, providing clear and detailed feedbacks. Her lectures are really engaging and NOT content-heavy since short recorded videos for each topic are available on module with weekly readings. Take a shot cuz she has been my fav prof during my tough 1st year so far!
She's so nice!
Dr. Saunders made this course much more engaging and inspirational that I thought it would be. She is very caring for students and always gives detailed feedbacks.
Her topic is Transgender Studies. Most students start class without prior knowledge but prof makes it interesting/engaging to learn proper LGBTQ+ terminology and study various research papers around trans people. She is always open to discuss any questions about assignments. There are discussions and lots of partner work leading to the final paper.
Took ENGL 246 this past term with Dr. Saunders and honestly did not enjoy it unfortunately. She's nice enough but INCREDIBLY disorganized. Our syllabus had to be revised several times, not a single assignment (there were many) was marked over the term so we had no idea how we were doing in the class, she didn't respond to emails, etc. Frustrating.
She's a nice lady but very disorganized. Currently, Nov. 24 and we have not received a single assignment back. Our final essay is due Dec 6, and the topics have yet to be released. Asked TA about it and was told they haven't even had a chance to discuss it yet. All 7 readings are rushed and given surface level attention. Avoid.
She's a nice person but her class is frustrating. Submitted discussion posts, blog posts, and an essay and haven't received single grade back. Lectures are surface level and barely touch on the material, which is frustrating bc we used a lot of texts/films. I don't think I've learned much about the actual topic of the course, literary adaptation.
I would love to take her courses on trans literature, as she is well known for it, but if you have any interest in film, avoid, just awful movies. Her organization is the worst I've come across in uni, and there was little room for class participation, despite her shallow analysis'. Expect to get lots of "i don't know" responses to questions.
This was the most disorganized class I've ever taken. Great person but gosh is she always clueless about what she is doing or what she expects us to do. Always received the vaguest answers to after-class questions and 0 responses to emails. Terribly played with my mental health and have no idea how I did in the class cause no grades were released.
A 1 hour lecture was only 40-45 minutes as the prof would should up late and/or unprepared. Assignments still haven't been grades (post final). Novels were never analyzed in detail and there was no attention to film. Her overall goal was to connect Trans or LGBT themes at any opportunity she got; even though that was not the theme of the course.
She is lovely and very funny, but not an easy professor to take, as I did not receive grades for anything until about 3 weeks before the end of the term. This was frustrating because I was unsure of how she marked and what she was looking for in my final paper when I was writing it. Her lectures are fairly interesting and I learned a lot from her.
Interesting subject matter made painfully boring through shallow analysis and completely unrelated lectures; I genuinely don't think I learned a single thing about the subject of the course, literature to film adaptations. Hard marker but gave no clear feedback on how to improve. Super nice person though, just wouldn't recommend this course.
I can tell she's very passionate about transgender studies which made it more interesting. The class is 3h but said she would do 1.5h lectures + breaks but almost always went over time by a lot. The class is a lot of article discussion and reading, you'll write a research proposal, do a 5 minute presentation and write a paper with a partner.
Honestly. one of my favourite profs I had all of first year. Super passionate about trans studies, very funny, and overall a very kind person. I think because I took this class during the summer term, she was pretty on top of marking and handing assignments back. I will say, she tends to ramble A LOT. Smt that should take 30 mins to teach takes 1h.
Took her for WRDS 150B in the summer and she was amazing. I definitely recommend taking her class if you're interested in transgender studies. WRDS 150 is a pretty dull course, but she made it interesting and was very easy to talk to, I loved her class. Put the work in and it's definitely an easy A in comparison to other WRDS 150 courses! LOVE HER!
Professor Saunders does not care about her students at all. All she does is talk about her interests without actually explaining how to write papers. Attendance is mandatory but no one wants to show up for a good reason
This professor is a very hard marker, being very specific in terms of understanding and wording within assignments and papers. Resubmission IS allowed, but must aim to target a specific part, and not just a complete regrade.
Dr. Saunders is very passionate, kind, and understanding. I appreciate the effort she puts into teaching. However, she did not always respond to emails and always went over time during class. The class also moved really slowly which made it difficult to be engaged.
Dr Saunders is a very interesting and funny person but for WRDS shes not great. The main assignment is a big research paper with a limited amount of guidance. Most of the class is spent repeating information from reading or online lectures which is technically relevant to the paper but not very helpful if you've already done the reading/lecture.
Absolutely one of the best profs! Very insightful, sweet, and caring. I went in with very little transgender knowledge and came out feeling a lot more educated. Don't let not knowing about transgender people stop you from taking the class. Great feedback and really cares about your learning too! Made mandatory boring content very interesting.
Dr Saunders is a great person and cares a lot about her work but was a very hard marker and did not communicate criteria for assignments very well. Trans studies was pretty interesting but the actual course content was dull and only loosely related to science research, even though this course was adapted for science majors. Take ENGL110 instead.
Mary Ann is nice, knowledgeable, and was clear about what the course would look like. She clearly loves meeting with students and gives good feedback outside of class. Didn't learn anything about writing, but learned a lot about trans studies. Grading criteria is rather unclear and she moved dates around a lot which made organizing difficult.
This professor is very kind and patient, always considerate of students' feelings. Her feedback on assignments is detailed and helpful, though grading is strict, and my scores were often low.Her pace is slow and she tends to go over time in class. Native speakers will benefit more, while non-native speakers may find the readings challenging.
Professor Mary Ann is very passionate about what she teaches. I marked her attendance as mandatory but she's very flexible with schedules and deadlines, as long as you talk to her. Her written feedback for written work shows that she is genuinely interested in your topic and your learning. I really enjoyed her class!
She is very sweet and gives very good feedback to submissions because she tries to be genuinely interested in your topic. She is very available outside class for office hours and I really enjoyed her course.
She was awesome and was very kind to students! Always was open for questions or office hours, and was very welcoming if you wanted advice or help. Her teaching sessions are a nice but I found that it wasn't very engaging material. It is hard to get lower than 70 in the course, but it is also very hard to get higher than 85. Her grading is tough.
