She is EXTREMELY un-organized and standards need to be constantly redefined. Very difficult to tell what she is asking for but she will pretty much slap a good grade on anything. The class discussions were usually quite interesting and the reading was fun
I really enjoyed the class and her teaching. I thought she was awesome and was a really easy grader.
her class is very easy and does not assign to much work. recommended teacher.
she was sooo fun!!!!
Although her class is easy, I sometimes felt pointless in going to her classes 'cause all you do is read books, get into a big circle, and discuss what it was about. So it wasn't giving me any kind of challenge whatsoever.
First and foremost, Mary Baron is a poet. She expects that you have a true interest in writing, and therefore are willing to work. She is a very intelligent woman- as far as poetry goes, anything that comes out of her mouth is gold.
Her grading is absolutely rediculous. I got a 95 in that course and didn't get an A because she told me that a 95 wasn't an A for her, a 96+ was. Other than that its an easy course. I thought it was rediculous her grading scale though. ~_~
Childrens lit: It was fun and pretty easy. She grades kinda hard on the papers though.
Painful; grades were given until the very end, she was very uncommunicative about progress in the class, and the reading schedule was erratic. Also, she needs to reconnect with the children of today - her comments are very out of date.
Baron is a great professor. She is well traveled and educated. Her choice of readings was done very well for her class, and she provokes thought in your discussions. She is understanding and an all around good professor.
Very forgetfull. Unorganized. Repeatedly interjects her own religious beliefs into the discussion and leaves no time for opposing views to be discussed. I was very interested in this class prior but quickly lost interest.
She is NUTS! I would never ever take her again. She is erratic, changed the syllabus repeatedly... cancelled classes, was unclear about assignments and was generally uninteresting and unoriginal in most of her comments during class. Though I think she is intelligent, she is not a great professor.
I was so annoyed! I started out loving the class but after never recieving any of my work back and after putting up with her polarity! NEVER AGAIN!!! I need a teacher who is at least partially organized!!!!
I enjoy her class. Informative and innovative way of teaching. Books are very interesting and discussions are lively. I love her class
I love Dr. Baron, the reading list is over 15 books, but they are fast reads. Interesting discussions and very thought provoking. I learned more in this class than all the other classes combined. If you want to teach kids, this is the class and the professor to take.
**** radical feminist. Men: Do not take
So unorganized, patronizing, class discussion could be lively but she changed the syllabus so much it was hard to keep up with her. She was very unclear about our few assignments, didn't give specific information of what she wanted. Really would NEVER take her again. Avoid!
Not organized, forgetful, Active in the community knows what she is talking and encourages conversation but does not have many assignments and is verbally unclear with what she wants on projects.
Hard teacher to please. Love the topics of discussion, and that's the only reason I stayed in the class, but otherwise it was not worth the average grade!
Over 16 book to read, but they go fast. Seems easy talking in circles & breaking into groups, but very informative. Great if you're going to be a teacher. I think she is innovative. Only problem would be 2 major grades, presentations, peers grade & final, have no idea what she wants w/writing
Great class! Reading selections were awesome! Riviting class dicussions. I learned a lot about myself in this class. (never expected that) I would take this class again; just for fun!
Innovative. You must do the reading and actively participate. Her classes are engaging. I would take her class again and again. I love the way she facilitates learning. One of the Best English Professors on campus. She really goes the extra mile.
REALLY sweet lady...REALLY GOOD TEACHER!!! Her class is easy, but you WILL still learn stuff. She was VERY interesting to listen to and her assignments rocked. I recommend her to ANYONE. She is always there to help and will talk about your grades any time you need. If you're not good at english, take with her and you will love it!
She is a great teacher. I enjoyed her teaching style. It was very hands on and interactive. If you don't like group work, then don't take her class. She is easy but you still learn alot. A refereshing teacher if all you have had is long, boring lecturers.
She was such a great teacher. She made learning about literature kinda fun. And she never gave any hard assignments.
Awesome Class. Great lady who applied class material to everyday situations. I got an A and would take her again.
Pretty good teacher, but very disorganized. I prefferred Marnie Jones.
She is so disorganized, flighty, cancelled class with no notice- at least 3 times. I got a good grade in the class but only because I focused my comments on agreeing with her. If you disagree she seems to dislike you.
She was a good teacher, not great but not bad. She was very disorganized and flighty, she would go off subject but her classes were very interesting and she taught on some really neat topics. It was very easy to get high grades in both classes I took. Would recommend...
True, Dr. Baron is a little disorganized, but she also doesn't give out many tests. Just pay attention. I don't think she would even notice if we hadn't read the books. well, maybe, but this class is easy and interesting for the most part. If your schedule is kind of full, this is almost for sure an A if you pay attention.
Very interesting class. I really liked Dr. Barron. She does have health issues that caused her to cancel class once, but who doesn't like a day off? Very sweet lady, and the class wasn't that hard. Related material to relevant issues. I am going to take two of her classes next semester.
Good, fair teacher. I had problems this term and she still helped me even when other professors sadly shirked their duty because they could. She actually cares about students. She does get a little disorganized it seems at times, but if you talk to her she is always willing to help. Attendance is a must in her class, but so long as you are will
Baron was awful. I signed up for the course expecting it to be like it said in the description, but it turned out someone else wrote the description and later had to give up the course. Baron took it and turned into her personal pedestal for Christian recruitment. The entire class is an insult to academia.
The most unorganized teacher I have ever seen. All of the stories we read, I have read before and she did not change my view in a positive way at all - she made them much more boring! If you are organized and want to know your grade and when your assignments are due, DO NOT take her!
She made us reinact scenes from Beowulf with play-do. WTF!?! I thought I was in an upper division lit class, not frickin' kindergarten. She patronizes you by giving you group work of the above nature for an hour then let's you know time is up by flicking the lights on and off. It's easy but insulting.
Dr. Baron has a way of teaching material in a fun way. It can be a little childish, but it shows to be effective. Keep up on the reading and you will do just fine. She does take roll every class so if possible avoid an 8:00am with her.
The class was pretty fun overall.. but watchout she requires attendance and if your late you will get a tardy. Besides that I never read anything and I still did fine, she makes us do a lof of group projects but none of them are hard. she will ask you if u need more time on the paper and give u it if u need it so thats nice. l i would take her agai
She is very intelligent. I've taken a few classes with her and they're not too difficult. Attendance is strictly required. Her teaching methods are a little unorthodox and non-linear. She doesn't stick to a syllabus. At the end of the semester, though, I felt like I learned a lot.
VERY UNORGANIZED. NEVER ever keeps you informed as to what kind of grade you have. Quizzes on blackboard without any sort of grading system. Every class involves lame group work.
I did very well in Dr. Baron's class. Here are the PROS: She grades somewhat easily, she is not boring, the books she chooses to read for Children's Lit are fun and entertaining! CONS: She sometimes treats students like highschoolers, she is VERY disorganized and you never know your grade until the very end. Overall a good teacher!
Overall an easy class BUT she is so disorganized I don't think she has records of grades. Grading seem arbitrary especially on papers. She hands us a rubric then doesn't use it. She told me to go to a website for sources then told me that I should have checked my sources better. And I suspect I got a B on the paper cuz she didn't like my opinion
Took two classes with her last semester and enjoyed them. She is a bit disorganized, I suppose, but I feel like I actually learned something, partly because she IS intelligent and partly because of the group learning style. It's easy to get a passing grade in her class(es) if you attend.
This class was pretty boring. We approached "the problem of evil" in a very un-academic way. If you are truly interested in complex discussions about evil in the world, stay away from this class. Dr. Baron is nice, and can be interesting, but that is the exception, not the rule.
Dr. Baron is nice. But nice is not always what we need as students is it? Here are the problems: She is disorganized, you will have no idea what your grade will be, she is very unpredictable in her grading (I have taken her twice; first time A, second time B+, same effot and dedication on my part)She never remembers her students' names :-(
Dr. Baron a well rounded professor with a lot to teach students. Please attend class, it's required and the lectures are insightful. While she can treat students like they're in high school, she is a very effective teacher. She's seen too much to fall for the usual excuses students give. I recommend her if you're not a slacker.
Good teacher, tough but fair, and wants you to learn. Facilitates lively discussion - doesn't just lecture the whole class. *NOTICE* USES CLICKERS FOR ALL CLASSES - Record keeping is problematic. Attendance is taken on the moment of class starting, come 5 mins early.
Dr. Baron is such a great professor! Yes,she is demanding, but she has her doctorate in English. I definitely recommend her if you are not a slacker!
Very smart professor!!! You MUST attend class, only allowed 2 absences. The reading can be rough at times, for she moves quickly. She uses blackboard and has a nice schedule to follow so you always know what is coming up. She has you work in groups and she gives short easy reading quizzes.
Adolescent Lit: Baron knows a lot, but she is difficult to deal with. She gives quizzes worth a decent part of your grade and then she misplaces them, so your grade ends up being arbitrary. Reading is easy, but there's a lot, and if you attend, you'll be ok. Don't take if you can't stand busy work.
She is the most unorganized person i have ever met. Her syllabus is useless and she changes assignments without any notice. I took her for the Disney Class and the books she chose include articles written terribly! She thinks she is intelligent but you have to take her information with a grain of salt.
There were many errors in the syllabus, and she changed it so many times it was unclear what was due when. She was hard to follow; she just started talking without any intro. She did not explain how to do her assignments; she expected you to already know how to do everything. I'm a hard worker & an A student, and I was lost for the most part.
Great teacher, I dont like group work, but I loved hers. I had a lot of fun in the class. There is always a lot of reading but it isn't boring so it goes fast. I enjoyed her class, she is a very difficult grader but she is really nice and slightly intimidating. I would recommend her to any english major!!
Dr. Baron has been teaching a long time and has a lot of experience in literature. I enjoyed her class, but I'm not a teenager or a young 20-something either, and she doesn't have much patience for their crap. Lots of reading, go to class, read the selections, and pay attention and you'll do well.
Intro to Poetry. Mary Baron is very unorganized and does not provide a schedule for the course nor an accurate syllaus. I enjoy writing poetry but she was so condescending that it almost ruined it. She was extremely rude, unprofessional. She wouldn't let me read certain poetry in a presentation due to her personal beliefs, this is a university lady
I am an adult returning to college and I am an "A" student. I do not miss classes or assignments; I am always beyond prepared for class. This teacher is the polar opposite of me. She will not correct her errors, she is disorganized, and she is a prime example of why tenure is not good for universities/students. She wasted my money/time.
Took baron for 2 classes. She is scatterbrained and unorganized, but the classes/material are interesting, and she grades pretty easily. Most days you'll either get into groups and talk about the reading/given topic, or watch a movie- it's easy, but she wants you there (only allows 3 absences). You have freedom to choose what to write your final paper about, which I don't like, but like I said she's an easy grader.
I've had Baron for two classes. Subject material is easy, and a good grade is attainable, but she is disorganized and doesn't make the material interesting. Never keeps track of grades and treats students like they are in kindergarten and don't know how to write correctly. Easy grade, but hard to put up with her work ethic. She is nice though.
While she's a generous grader and a nice woman, Professor Baron is unorganized and struggles to shed any new light on reading material. She doesn't tell us anything that Google couldn't.
This is the most disorganized professor I have ever had. I took her for an online course which was a big mistake. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR THE ONLINE COURSE. IT IS A NIGHTMARE. Half the time she doesn't know what she's talking about. I had so much trouble just figuring out what the heck my assignment was.
What a nightmare. Taking Childrens Lit online, most stressful class I ever had. Gets offended when awful clarity is questioned, sporadically posts assignments at her leisure, often with one day's notice. Easy work, but her.."disorganization".. frustrates indescribably when figuring out what it is she wants or even where to post it. Avoid.
Horrible experience. She had an injury midway through the semester, which I get isn't her fault, but she kept making us come to class when she just wouldn't show up. Making it worse, her communication was awful! She seemed nice from the personal exp I got, but then she ruined the class with terrible communication and lack of effort on her part.
Grades rarely returned. Entirely too much group work. Expectations often unclear. Would not take again.
Run. Grades never get returned correctly, and then she miraculously loses quizzes. She also relies too heavily on loose group discussion. Teach lady.
Dr. Baron is by far the worst professor I have ever taken, and I went to a community college for my AA that's saying something. Unorganized, even in a simple online class! Doesn't post grades quickly so you don't find out how you're doing until halfway through the course! If you like to play Russian roulette with your GPA, this class is for you!
Dr. Baron is profoundly intelligent. She knows the material as well as most of us know our own names. She is sometimes scatterbrained, but always gives her students the benefit of the doubt. She is intimidating at first, but she's a very sweet lady and her primary interest is in educating the future generations. Take her if you value knowledge.
Dr. Baron is a very intelligent woman, educated at some of the nation's best universities. Therefore, she holds high expectations for her students: responsibility from the young ones and intelligence/critical thinking (more than just organization and effort) from the older ones.
also took her for prob. of evil. pretty easy grader. she is incredibly sweet and probably has an amazing resume. Will go above and beyond for her students. She has literally been everywhere and is very knowledgeable. however, the prob of evil class was incredibly unorganized and felt like a waste compared to the children's lit. take child. lit!
This online class was surprisingly great. Professor Baron has clear expectations, sets up a clear schedule, and is understanding towards students. Basically, there are short reading quizzes and discussion board posts to do each week, which is definitely manageable. Also, the topics were pretty interesting overall.
I do NOT recommend you take Professor Baron's online class. The schedule is very unclear and confusing, grading is inconsistent, and the assignments are not explained well. It is very difficult to navigate the course because of how unorganized everything is! I felt unsure of everything I did the entire class. I really wanted to like this class. :(
I did not enjoy how unorganized the class was. She is not clear and is constantly misspelling things. She takes her time getting back to emails.
This is by far the most disorganized, confusing and painful course I have ever taken in my 3 years at UNF. Her entire blackboard is disorganized from top to bottom, things are never were they should be, and she isn't clear at all on her posts. She barley gives any (if at all) feedback on work that is helpful other than 1 or 2 words. AVOID!
I took her Adolescent Literature class and while she gave great comments on books we read in class, she is very unorganized. She would jump around on when she wants you to have a book read by. Be prepared to read a book a week by the way. She also wouldn't give very good feedback. I never really knew what she wanted from me. DONT TAKE HER.
Dr. Baron's course was little disorganized. At the beginning of the semester, she made us purchase about 16 books and we only used about 10. If you take her, don't buy all your books in advance. It may take you awhile to figure out exactly what she wants from you, but once you do, it's beyond easy to get an A.
I found Dr. Baron extremely intelligent and this class to be one of the more rewarding classes I have taken during my undergrad. While she can be slightly unorganized (she's a poet people, come on now), she's extremely helpful when asked for clarification. She responds to emails almost always within the hour. Be prepared to participate and do work.
Her blackboard course is messy and disorganized, and due dates will pass you by without you even noticing. She gives you a checklist of "everything" due that unit, and then puts up an announcement saying that a test that wasn't on the checklist was due two days ago. Says assignments are due at midnight but closes the discussion board much earlier.
I'm an adult w/ excellent attendance & an excellent work ethic. Baron's disorganized and confused, & rude to anybody who dares question why things have not been graded or how students could lose overall points if they did't receive 100% of the possible points on extra credit assignments. Don't trust that she'll be in class or stick to the schedule.
She doesn't do ANYTHING to help! She makes me go talk to this assistant of hers and I feel like THAT assistant is my assigned professor and Dr Baron is barely around to help me herself. The WHOLE course was SO confusing and I had NO idea what she wanted from me. I rarely would give bad reviews, but I had to this time to tell you guys to... AVOID!!!
I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER take this professor again. She is the most rude and unprofessional professors I have ever came across. She is a tough grader and she does not explain her expectations thoroughly. I should have taken the other students' advice because this class was diffucult because of her and it didnt have to be. So disappointed!!!!!
BEWARE! I will not take another class by Professor Baron. She gives assignments vague descriptions and does not understand why students are confused by the assignment. She takes weeks to grade assignments, even the assignments that must go to the writing center after the original is written. And she rarely gives more than a sentence in feedback.
Dr. Baron made this class incredibly hard when it didn't need to be. She misspells constantly, is unclear with grading criteria, does not communicate with students, deletes assignments without notice, basically shrugs the class off on the TA. I just graduated and she is the most unorganized, rude, and lazy professor I had during my time at UNF.
I took poetry workshop and Mary Baron is brilliant! She will not tolerate cell phone use or extensive absences! There might occasionally be a lack of clarity on due dates so just ask her! She always responded quickly to my emails. Her teaching inspired me to continue writing and take the course again for credit with another professor.
Baron is severely disorganized. Her grading is vague and does not make much sense. She allows you to redo most of her papers by going to the writing center but a lot of the time, writing center had no help as to fixing my grade. If taken online, you must have patience. Her class requires a lot of time.
Mary's the kind of woman who makes her students raise to her level. This is a trait to be respected. She is tough, but she is worth it. Take her in class lectures. The way she speaks sounds like poetry. I am a poet because of people like Mary Baron. She is a treasure. Take her poetry class! She makes you grow.
This teacher struggled all semester with the software we were using. Assignments were posted and removed, not able to be opened, or done and not counted for a grade. She was extremely unorganized and her feedback was little to none. She didn't teach anything, only gave vague assignment guidelines. Wouldn't take a class by her again.
She does not give grading criteria. There is no syllabus. All of the due dates listed are wrong, and she admits this, but does not tell you the right ones. She should not be allowed to teach an online course with this kind of behavior. Simply put, she does not know how to use the internet and refuses to learn how. Avoid taking her at all costs.
I took her for an online class and it was the worst experience I've ever had. She has no idea what she's doing, how to use Canvas, and doesn't make an attempt to fix her mistakes. There's no submission button on some assignments, all the due dates are wrong, its completely unorganized and stressful. Avoid at all costs.
She is the absolute worst. I took her for Children's Literature, online. She has literally no idea what Canvas is, how to use it, or how to grade. She did not grade my work until the literal last week of the semester, and I still do not know if I passed. She does not have any due dates, no ways to submit work through Canvas. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!
Worst experience ever! Please do not take this course! I took her on campus and it was a complete waste of time! Basically a glorified book club. I have no idea how she came up with my final grade because we never used canvas and she never gave grades for assignments. Beware!
Professor Baron is so kind hearted and amazing. However, she does not know how to use canvas and cannot figure out how to upload grades correctly or use the side tabs. So always ask her. Prepare to read all assignments. She has small assignments for class grades that are done at home for not many points and one final project.
Genuinely one of the worst classes I have ever taken. No grading criteria, no organization and constant off tangent discussions. A truly awful experience. AVOID at ALL costs
I took Professor Baron for Poetry Workshop. I am sure she is a great English and poetry teacher, but I would definitely not recommend her for a workshop class. She did not make me want to write poetry or give the class a good framework in which to do so. She is HORRIBLE with Canvas, due dates, and overall communication.
