She is a good teacher, you understand everything in class when she does examples, but doing it on your own is hard. Study and do lots of practice problems!! Her tests are very hard, but she does curve.
Hard Class. Reading the book helps but since she taches you everything you need to know she tests you on those concepts x 10. She makes things harder than they should be. Take someone easier that will just test you over the material in the book
A pretty basic class. Many students complained on her test difficulty, but I found the tests to contain fairly few surprises. I would not recommend taking "easier" teachers, because if you're taking organic, then you're probably pre-something. Dr. Bean prepares well for the MCAT/DAT ect. Not a hard class, didn't read the book and made an A.
Best orgo teacher in UH CHEM DEPARTMENT, BOTH 1 and 2 PERIOD! DO take her and be prepared to do her old exams at least a week early before exams. ORGO EXAMS ARE ALWAYS AT 7PM on FRIDAY EVENING. go study at ACS (chem help desk. she teaches in depth and wants you to understand reactions. 3 tests and 1 final. 1 test is dropped (not final). made an A
The lectures are okay but I still go to class to fill her blank notes.. However the quizzes and mad minutes can get hard towards the end... Her exams are hard and drives students insane. I got B in her class by studying 6-7 hours a day and taking engineering classes. This class is not for lazy students
She's a great professor and really teaches the material. 3 tests, drops 1, 1 final. Orgo2 has ACS+her own test as final. I highly recommend her as the best prof for orgo. Organic is not impossible if one dedicates time and patience for class.
Her lectures are crystal clear! I took her for orgo 1 and all I did was go to class, listen, fill in her notes on the slides she provides on her website. I never read the book and didn't need to. I did old exams a week before the exam and I did pretty good on her tests, which are not really hard either
Best OCHEM PROFESSOR! Don't expect an easy A though but if you work hard enough you'll get it.
Outstanding professor but class is intense. Her notes are very organized and helpful. I recommend just doing as many problems as you can. No fixed grade scale, but whatever the class averages on a test that's a "C". I wanted a A- but ended up with a B+. The final is what got me. Other than that she truly teaches with a passion.
Best organic teacher ever ! Shes the nicest teacher I've ever had ... Wish more teachers were like her! Go to class read the notes and u should be good to go!
this is a VERY hard class. If you are looking for an A.Dont take it.SHe curves the final grade but its not good enough to give you the grade you want. The tests, are extremly hard...i would NOT recommend taking her whatsoever!!!!
Hard course! Hard Exams! 3 exams, 1 final, drops lowest of first 3 exams. Failed all exams, made below class average and ended up with a C in class (studied a lot for final). Personally, the book taught be better, she was not a bad teacher, I just find it hard to learn while stressfully trying to fill in notes. Start day one and don't mess around
Forget chemistry. Bean and OChem together teach one thing: how to become a good student. Look over material before class, dedicate yourself to coming to class, listen, then do practice problems before the next one. It's a lot of hard work, but as Organic is required for many health-related programs, it's the perfect example of a weed-out class.
3 tests (lowest dropped), 1 final, and attendance quizzes everyday. You really really want to get the highest grade possible on the first test to maximize your grade. As for how to study....work every problem you can find: book, quizzes, ect.
3 Exams (lowest dropped). Final. Attendence poppers. Start from day 1 and don't fall behind. each test build on each other. Aim for your first test to be your highest as itll be the simplest. 2nd test will be your hardest because test 3 is similar to test 2 so by then you should be more familiar with the format and reactions. Good prof, hard class.
Best Organic Chemisttry instructor at UH. You are going to have to dedicate some time and effort in this class if you want and A, but she prepares you well for every test by teaching you everything you have to know for her tests. Her notes are extremely helpful and easy to fill in. I never had to read the book. I got an A.
Dr. Bean has been teaching this course for over 10 years; she definitely knows what she's doing. Her course prepares you well for both the ACS OChem final and your professional school entrance exams (MCAT, DAT, PCAT, etc.). I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Bean, UH is lucky to have her.
Dr Bean's class is definitely not for slackers. NEVER fall behind and do NOT let your guard down.you have to know the material prior to attending lectures and if you fall behind, my advise from one student to the other, drop the course ASAP because you WILL NEVER catch up.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to ochemweb.com. I was always too lazy to goto class and pay attention or read the book. But I always made sure to do the worksheets off that website a week before the exam and got an A in the class. A UH student made that website and the worksheets are very similar to the exams.
I definitely recommend finding sites that have worksheets to help you. Try to find old tests to study too. However, once the ACS final comes around you are going to have some trouble if you only studied tests and worksheets. Tough class, don't get behind.
Her exams are hard but if you study her old tests and memorize the rxn on the back of each chapters then you should do fine. The ACS is difficult so make sure you study that as well. Don't wait until last minute. There's a quiz at beginning of each class worth 6% of your grade. 3 exams (drop lowest), 1 final which includes the ACS.
Professor Bean is hands down the best organic professor at UH. She prepares you for graduate school acceptance exams and also for the ACS final in organic 2. If you go to class, take notes, and read the book, organic will be easy for you. You can prepare for her exams by working old exams and practice problems from zade jaraj.
I took organic 2 with her I end up with D- after I got A in my organic 1 she is very hard teacher. you go to class to fill the planck you cannot ask Question during class, so u study completly by ur self. good luck but I don't recommand her. She is not that good as some of the students said >
Her exams are very hard. Her notes are not too helpful but if u practice the old exams you can make a B. I wont recommend her because she is not as good as a lot of students said.
Overrated instructor. Not helpful at all and her tests are extremely hard. Notes are useless compared to what you would face on the test. Only attended class because of mad min quiz to boost my grade. Her old tests may be helpful but BEWARE she does not repeat questions but kinda give you an idea how she asks questions. GOOD LUCK and STUDY HARD.
She is ok. You HAVE to practice a lot. You cant depend on her notes only. I practiced as many problems as I could, read most of the chapter, and did as many old exams as I found. Her tests have tricky questions, but you can do well if you study a lot. I got an A, even though I didnt start that well
Dr. Bean was a fairly good professor, but I felt like she tended to rush. She covers too much material in one single lecture that you lose interest really soon. Her exams weren't too hard; the key to doing well is to practice on as many problems. There are enough resources out there, you just need to look for them.
Awesome professor. She does move a little fast but that's due to the amount of material that has to be covered and she covers it in detail. I skimmed the book/read parts for clarity after class. After understanding all you can, practice practice practice. I left old tests for last. Midterm 1 was the easier one but don't dismiss the old chem stuff.
She's patient and very helpful. She does very well in explaining things. Just keep up with the material and you'll be fine.
I honestly found her lectures to be useless.Tests are a pain in the butt. Takes off points for the simplest mistakes and this class is overall annoying.
You can attend lectures if you want, but I didnt find them one bit helpful. Tests are hard and seem irrelevant. Walking out of the testing room is one of the best feelings ever. Your orgasmic experience drops when you receive your grade.
Dr. Bean is an AWESOME teacher. I attend in every single class just to listen to her lectures.
You will find Dr. Bean helpful if you actually study and are on top of things. If you are not, you will get nothing out of the lectures other than a massive headache. She organizes her lectures very well; she goes a little fast though. If you go to her office hours she is very helpful and a really nice lady.
She is a very hard but great professor. Her lectures are interesting and clear. You really have to practice a lot in order to pass this class.I recommend taking her since you will learn a lot about chemistry Especially those who wanna go to Pharmacy or Medical School. Her old tests are available online, look for them, and PRACTICE 6-8 tests!
Took Bean for Orgo 1 and 2. She is tough and does not tolerate slackers. You have to study for her tests and reading the book really helps to understanding concepts about facts. She will better prepare you for ACS than the other orgo professors because she has facts on her tests.
She is a good teacher like everyone says but the class is extremely hard and the competition is high. Be smart and take another professor and go to her lectures if you want a competitive edge for an A. She does prepare well for ACS but other teachers will curve anyway so again, go to her lectures but enroll in another class.
Nicest person on earth, but very challenging class. Everyone in orgo 2 is a beast and are all super smart, so dont expect help from a curve. A 50 is usually a C-. An 85 is an A-. A lot of people get A's because they are nerds, but a lot of people get C's because they actually have lives or other hard classes. Try to do all of the Mad Minutes.
Awesome professor. I took her for Orgo 1 and 2. She's very nice and very helpful and tries to keep her lectures as uplifting as possible. Take her!
Effective and very nice, but she makes a hard, dull subject even harder with her exams. The exams focus on organic synthesis rather than facts and mechanisms and such. You can find her old ones online. I'd recommend working through all her "mad minutes", quizzes she gives that are even harder but relatively interesting.
save yourself and take thummel. he's easier with easier tests. bean's test is hard as heck. class was ok in the beginning but got really boring as semester went on.
You might think you understand everything. But her tests are on a completely different level. In comparison to all of the other professors, her exams are unnecessarily difficult. So if you want to have an outrageously devastating effect on your GPA, go right ahead and take her.
Dr. Bean is a bit of an overrated professor. The tests were very hard and the problems in the book did not help for studying due to the lack of complex problems. She rushed through things in class and I didn't find her lectures particularly helpful or interesting.
She is an awesome teacher and she knows it, therefore she expects you to do well even though her tests are hard and detail-oriented. She has no tolerance for slackers. Read the textbook and work out all available previous exams before each test. You will end up learning some interesting organic chemistry - Take her.
Only way to make an A in the course is to do every single past exam. The more tests you do & understand how to get the answers, the better you will do.You don't even have to read the book, & only a few pages from the in-class notes pertain to what will be on your exams.Just do old exams & continue to practice them.Don't wait until last min to study.
Best Professor for Organic Chemistry @ UH. The only way to do good in the class is to be attentive and keep up with the material as the class goes on. Do old exams and all the quizzes (mad minutes) she provides. Also, she is very helpful and kind to the students.
Dr.Bean is a challenging prof. You will need to do a lot of problems( old exams, mad minutes, book problems, etc.) the more you do the better off you are. You will find yourself often lost, she is also very overrated, did all studying on my own. A tough subject, I had to rely on outside help.
Do old exams, mad mins, book problems, problems from Zade Farajs & other O. Chem sites. Tutors are helpful but few good ones. At times she isn't approachable & doesn't like answering questions. You're on your own but her notes are helpful for fact ques. on the test. Read & do problems ahead of class or you will be lost. Difficult & detailed exams.
Be prepared to get outside help and work every problem you can get your hands on. The exams are more detailed than the lecture notes and you will get lost easy. She is tenacious in her views on course work and task oriented, but she does like jokes.
She's actually very good. Many people aren't ready in college to study a lot outside of class (like me) and don't do well the first semester. It's really a matter of keeping up with the class and spending time. It's like a second job. I'm in the 3332 class right now and I'm feeling much more confident. Don't worry if you don't do well the first sem
Going into this class I already knew it was going to be hard but I thought this site would point me in the right direction with her...wrong. If you arent the best in school and struggle, dont take her. I tried every little help I could get and still didnt do good enough. Now I have to take this class over. Hard tests that have surprises.
She's knows what she's doing but I feel rushed when she's teaching. Talks really fast and it's hard to keep up as she goes on. She does skeletal notes so if you prefer filling in blanks then take her. I prefer writing out my notes so that there's more time to digest. I prefer Dagulis. He talks slower and write down everything you need to know.
Best organic professor you will ever have. Don't memorize reactions. Don't memorize all the steps of a mechanism. Instead, try to understand and the following steps will come to you. After you understand the concepts/mechanisms/etc, do old exams (which you must ask for from previous/current students) and, if needed, go to ACS tutoring. Do that = A
Go to class, take notes, read the book, do all of the online practice, visit the ACS tutors, visit Dr. Bean, and work all mad minutes/old exams you can get your hands on. Getting an A takes work, but there is not other professor I'd recommend over Dr. Bean. She is wonderful! She prepared me well for the ACS exam, I hardly studied and did well.
Took her for both semesters, and my opinion didn't really change that much for this one. The final is curved heavily, as I did very poorly and still managed to pass her class.
Overrated prof, but Orgo is hard no matter who you take. Practice every single available practice test and you'll be fine. There's a huge curve at the end of the semester, so it's hard to fail this class, but also very hard to get an A.
Dr. Bean is an amazing professor. A lot of people complain because they don't practice enough. Do all worksheets, all old exams, and most important READ HER NOTES FIRST OF ALL. Her notes might seem confusing first but you will get used to it. Go to class and copy notes yourself. Study a week ahead. I would definitely recommend her!!
Dr. Bean is a good teacher, but she makes her test way too hard for the average student. The notes are printed offline so if you miss one day your in trouble. I advise you to avoid her and take another teacher because she will trick you on the test, I had to drop because I couldnt afford a low grade.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST!! Yes her exams are insanely hard and you don't see any problems in the textbook that are as hard as hers. Goes too fast on lectures and her notes are so confusing and annoying to follow. If I were you I would NOT take her so you might as well spare yourself the frustration.
Dr. Bean is the best Ochem teacher at UH.She really knows her stuff. People complain her class is extremely difficult, but that is only if you don't put in enough effort. This class will require A LOT of effort. Go to class every day, work old exams, read and reread the notes if you want to make an A. if you want to understand the material, take her
Dr. Bean is an awesome teacher! The people that are complaining about her tests being hard, are the ones who don't work the old exams. She gives you two old exams that are pretty much exactly like the one you'll take. There are also other old exams online that you should work. Just put in the work and you'll get the grade you deserve.
Her class is not as hard as people say it is. The best tool to succeed are her old test, which are pretty easy to find. It is quite annoying her class is mandatory because I did not really learn much from lecture. If you can take the workshop, it cuts your study time in half. Bean is the best and easiest professor.
Great Professor! Practice Old tests and this will be extremely helpful for the test!
Okay, time to contribute after looking at these ratings and then finally taking the class myself. Okay professor, kinda fast. Mad minutes help to clarify concepts. Work EVERY SINGLE old test you can get your hands on and you should be good. Textbook not needed.
She really explains the concepts well but you have to rework the mad minutes for each class and do as many old tests as you can find. A lot of work but Organic is not impossible. Workshop is definitely helpful with working problems and test taking tips.
Fantastic professor. Her lectures are well rehearsed: she moves quickly but remains crystal clear. The material covered in lectures tends to be superfluous to what you need for tests but provides interesting physical background for the concepts addressed. This class is ace-able and helps one develop a keen physical insight.
Dr. Bean is amazing; she teaches very well. Even though her tests were harder than others, her great teaching more than made up for it. I feel like I have grasped organic very well through her class. I made an A by making flashcards of reactions and studying old tests and some mad minutes. But yeah, great teacher; I would recommend her to anyone.
What can I say, she's great. She knows the subject like the back of her hand and she's a good teacher. Expectedly, her tests are difficult but fair. I had to put in a lot of work and use clutch prep for practice and to really drill in the tough concepts. The textbook didn't really help at all. Definitely take orgo with her, but expect to work!
Dr. Bean is FANTASTIC. She provides her students with all the material they need to succeed--old tests, fill-in-the-blank notes, and quizzes (not graded, just for attendance purposes). I just used the resources she provided (never opened the text) and I got an A in both Ochem 1/2. She is so sweet, too!
AMAZING PROFESSOR She actually teaches Orgo unlike some of the other Orgo professors in this University. Her exams are tough but practice makes perfect. TAKE HER You won''t regret it. You don''t even need to buy the textbook because her notes are so through and she explains and teaches so well.
This course is HARD. She goes very fast, gets a little irritated when people ask questions (I think because it slows her down), tests are WRITTEN. I don't understand why the tests can't be multiple choice considering it's one of the hardest classes you will take. And most will never actually use it. Take the workshop, you won't learn much in class.
What people don't realize is that Ochem is going to be hard no matter what, but Dr. Bean teaches it very well. She's also very helpful if you go to her office hours and ask questions. However, because the class is hard, I would recommend taking the workshop with the class. The workshop in conjunction with the class is why I'm making an A so far
Hardest class I've ever taken. Bean goes way too fast to actually teach you anything. Make sure you take the workshop! That class actually helps Tests are unnecessarily hard. This course is ready difficult. Why make the tests harder than the mad minutes. Those that say she's a good teacher are those that already get the material, don't be fooled.
This class is miserable! It's almost like listening to someone speak a foreign language for an hour and twenty minutes. Bean goes WAY too fast. Workshop helps more than she does.
Class doesn't help because she goes so fast! It's almost like she's so smart and knows the material so well that she can't teach to your level. Some students in this class aren't chemistry majors and it's most likely the hardest class they'll take. To professor bean: help you students out! All student should get what the students in workshop get!
I took this class last semester and had to get a private tutor. Even when doing that I did not pass. I'm not an idiot, I have a GPA of 3.6... But this class is so difficult. And she goes really quick for how hard the material is. I would take Thummel. He gives easier tests and you can use the workshop to supplement. Much better use of your time!
i transfer to UH last semester and this lady is the reason for me to transfer to another university, how you think about her?
She is very fast during lectures so I often find myself completely lost after 15 minutes or so. Tests are extremely hard and the book doesn't have complicated problems like hers. I took her based on the great reviews she had but I'm very disappointed in my choice.
Mary Bean is completely overrated. Her lectures are long, boring, and fast. She may be a geek and know her stuff but she is not good at explaining. You really have to study on your own to keep up or you'll be left behind to fail. Go to tutoring room and learn from them not from her. Take Thummel not her. Do organic lab somewhere else not with her!
Take Bean if you're already good at Chemistry. She goes realllyyyyy fast in her lectures, at the end of the day, there's no point in doing the notes, the only reason anyone comes to class is because of the 6% attendance grade, and if you want to succeed even remotely in this class? 2 words - Practice Tests. Memorization is the only way to pass.
The skeleton notes she provides are helpful but in order to pass, PRACTICE!!! Practice the problems and make sure you have them down. She will teach you BASIC problems in class but it is on you to learn the VERY HARD ones and be able to understand them. The practice tests are extremely helpful. Do them first and then check your work.
Read before class, fill in her notes, work problems, and WORK PROBLEMS. If you do these things then a B is definitely possible. Be prepared to have this class fill up most of your semester's time because it is a time consuming class.
Read before class, fill in her notes, work problems, and WORK PROBLEMS. If you do these things then a B is definitely possible. Be prepared to have this class fill up most of your semester's time because it is a time consuming class, but Bean definitely does what she can to make it a fun and understandable subject to her students.
AMAZING TEACHER!! Her tests were really hard but she actually teaches. She breaks down the concepts, and teaches you how to do the problems. She is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. It's a tough course and I worked so hard to make a B+ but I actually learned orgo. I didn't need to use the textbook because her notes were great.
Dr. Bean is the most awesome, fantastic and down to earth professor ever. Lecture is very crystal clear, do not need book if understand everything in notes. DO ALL the past exams to practice. ACS exam at the end was very challenging but it was not impossible. Dr. Bean showed me that chemistry could actually be FUN.
I'll be honest I hated her guts in orgo 1, but after taking orgo 2 with her, i now realize that she was just being hard to prepare us for the ACS exam at the end of orgo 2 that covers orgo 1 and orgo 2. Now i see her as one of the best teachers this campus has to offer. If you want an A, do all old tests you can find and pay attention in class.
Took her for Orgo 1&2. Understanding her notes and working on the practice exams are the key to ace her class. Her lectures are sometimes long and dry but that's because there's a lot of material to cover. She's funny and she does her best. Throws small curve balls on her exams but this is college, so it's to be expected. Workshop can help greatly!
This class was very time-consuming. Learn from her notes and practice as much as you can before each exam in order to pass the class! DO NOT START ACS LATE!!! A month ahead will guarantee a good ACS score if you try to understand and review concepts! Attendance is 3-6% of final grade because of daily quizzes! She curves at the end of the semester.
I took Bean for Organic 1 and 2 and I thought the class was hard in that lots of studying and memorization was required. Bean teaches the course very well and covers all of the material that is supposed to be covered. I did not like the class when I took it because it took up a lot of time but looking back I am most grateful.
She goes way too fast during lecture. She expects you to know things and doesn't do a good job in making you understand the materials. I would not recommend her at all.
Dr. Bean is an amazing professor. A lot of people complain that she goes way too fast, but that's organic chemistry! There's a lot to cover in this subject, and she tries her best to help you. If you go to any other school, it will be the same; blame the subject, not the professor.
My TA, Libia was horrible. We never got graded quizzes back. We got 4 graded labs back 2 days before final so it was hard to gauge how well you were doing and how hard you needed to study for final. There was a very slight curve. Final and midterm are impossible. Even if they seem easy, they grade hard. I hated this lab.
Second round of her class, I was able to pull off a C- after failing the first time. The first test is vital. It will save you later on. The first test is mostly review of general chemistry and some basic organic stuff. Then it gets really difficult. She does notes on an overhead, and does not make these available online.
This class will require ALOT of work for a good grade. Go to class and use the handouts for note taking. 3 test, lowest is dropped, a final and attendance are the grades for this class. do lots and lots of practice problems. try to take the workshop for this class too. Dr. Bean has a dry sense of humor, but is approachable for help.
O-chem lab requires more work than Gen chem labs. My TA was pretty cool and helpful. Read and re read the lab book before coming to class. Do your prelab and the procedure part too before class. The midterm and final are hard so study, study for those. My lab average was in the 50s for both.
Dr. Bean is a wonderful professor, and she's totally adorable too. What I like most about her is the fact that her notes lay everything out for you and you job is to pay as much attention as possible in lecture. Her tests are also very consistent, so if you practice the questions from old tests you should do fine.
Dr. Bean's lectures aren't super helpful (the SEP workshops help with understanding more), but her tests are formatted like her old tests. If you practice all of her old tests, you will 99.9999% do good on the tests.
She's a sweet lady and you can tell she cares about her students but I hate her teaching style. I feel like I'm in high school because we have to do fill in the blank notes. She's the type to expect you to know all the little specific things she teaches versus just understanding the material. If you didn't take her for orgo1 you'll have to catch up
Dr. Bean is an amazing professor. Though she isn't always very clear in her notes, her tests are very straightforward. It is hard to not make at least a B. Make sure to take workshop. It helps alot. Try to attend class because there are quizzes in the beginning which are for participation grade.
Dr. Bean's lectures are not helpful, she writes notes on the overhead but goes extremely fast that students are not following along with her and trying to understand, but are hastily trying to get her notes down before she flips the page. People only attend for attendance points. Exams are hard and she is not very welcoming during office hours.
Barely gives partial credit on midterm and final lab. This class taught me to stick with things and do not give up. Probably the hardest class I have yet taken. Be prepared to sit for 6 hours. Sometimes you will have to finish 2-3 labs. Be patient. It will be long and boring but its worth it. Final avg 50 %. Mid-term avg 40%.
Dr. Bean is one of the best professors I've taken at UH. The class is tough, but she makes sure to teach everything that will be covered on the exams. Honestly, working a lot of practice problems will be essential to pass. I'd recommend.
The key to organic chemistry is PRACTICE, regardless of professor. Bean is a good instructor to introduce you to the material, but you will have to put in work outside the classroom. Get a hold of old tests/reaction sheets as soon as you can through workshops or friends. You will get one drop test, final is worth 40% of your final grade.
Her expectations are crystal clear. She teaches everything you need to know in her lectures and prepares thorough notes packets for student. There was a little participation credit but the grade is mostly based on 3 midterms and a final. Drops lowest exam grade. Exams are tough but she prepares you. It's up to you to do the practice. You must work.
I'm really disgusted with Dr. Bean. I took her with a very rude TA and ended up withdrawing from this course which I am grateful for! Do not take this, I have many friends that made C's with her and they are hardworking smart and talented students. Avoid this class!!!
Class if very clear cut. Attendance is mandatory. Tests are hard but read the book and do the old exams and you should be ok. Also ACS does a review before each test which help alot
I took Dr. Bean last year and spoke with her, she is a very nice lady however the TA's are not clear and do not have a clear understanding how to teach the labs. The midterm and final do NOT relate to the pre-lab or post-lab questions, they are based on certain specifics that are preformed and are "pop exams". No reviews are given. Ended up with C.
Bean is a fantastic professor. Notes are clear and concise, and she knows Orgo like the back of her hand. Tests were hard but predictable. The final is worth 40% of the grade, which is ridiculous. So study like crazy. And go to class. Quizzes every day.
Orgo 1 and 2 is easy if you practice. Take SEP workshops! SEP gives all the past tests from 2000 to present. The only way to pass is to take the old tests and have done all of them before the actual test. Learn the class by doing the practice tests because the format is the same every year. Don't read any textbooks, take SEP and practice.
I'm not grading Dr. Bean but rather her TA, Libia. Please drop the lab if you are stuck with Libia for any orgo lab. She is lost and doesn't help. Ask her a question and she will refer you to read the lab or book. Drop the lab or try to find another TA.
Hands down one of the best ochem prof out there. She taught the material well and as long as you did the practice problems and tests, you have a good chance of getting a good grade. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in taking her for ochem.
I dont know who finds her a good professor, but she really sucks at teaching. Goes through the fill in the notes like we already know this stuff like her. The only reason i would recommend her is because her test are very similar to her past test. She doesn't change the format so its really good practice and she even repeats questions sometimes.
She manages to make a hard subject easy, and understandable. Her class is one of the few that is actually worth your tuition. TAKE HER!!!
Organic chemistry is a very hard class. Bean is a pretty good teacher, but you MUST study on your own. 3 tests and a final. There are quizzes in everyone of her lectures, so you can't skip.
Organic chemistry may seem like a hard subject, but it is all about practice. Dr. Bean gives you the material to learn and expects you to learn it for her tests. Practice is key to this class so it is strongly recommended to take the workshop. Dr. Bean is a nice professor and occasionally will invoke some humor in her lectures. Def take her.
One of the few great professors in UH. I started the class thinking a passing grade would be a hard reach since I heard ochem is hard, but finished the sem with an A. Make sure to master the first exam--it's the easiest and the material is essential for the other tests. To pass the class, memorization and practice is key.
Dont bother reading the book. Take a workshop, if you can't get in, get a dropbox link from someone with 15 years worth of old exams, just do those and you'll be good to do.
Okay Prof, tests are similar to past exams. You have to study hard, grades are curved.
I love Dr. Bean! Great professor, has a good sense of humor and knows the material very well and explains it well. However, her tests are ridiculously hard even with practice tests that you may have access to. Orgo 1 is fine but 2 is a lot of trouble. Her expectations are clear and you know what you need to do, the tests are simply not "nice"
People who have a hard time in this class really dont put in the work. She teaches the best that she can in the time that she is allotted, the rest is left to you! The textbook is very clear, just READ IT. It makes life so easy! PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! if you fall behind, you will definitely fail. My advice is to stay a chapter ahead! GOODLUCK!
Prof Bean is so sweet if you actually attend her lectures and pay attention. Never read the textbook but if you listen closely and practice old exams, you understand everything. The lab and the lecture were on the same page so that helped too. Grading is focused on exams and the quizzes given for attendance. Taking her again for CHEM3222.
Dr Bean is a really nice professor. But just listening to lectures and reading book is not enough. Practice a lot. My recommendation would be to take workshop I swear it makes life so easier. Sturdy hard for 1st two exam they will literally save. Third exam is hard, even if you drop that one make sure to study because final is similar to 3rd exam.
She goes really fast in class, especially this semester. She didn't seem to care that we missed a week of class. Instead she just sped things up and expected us to have to learn everything at a much faster pace. Orgo is hard, but it's even harder with an inconsiderate professor.
Overall she seems like a nice professor, but her exams are far from nice. There are 3 exams and a final. The first two exams are relatively straight forward and not too bad. The third exam and the final were much more difficult. Practice exams are the key to success in this course.
Dr. Bean makes organic chemistry easy. The people that complain about the course being difficult probably skipped class and did not pay attention to her lectures, because everything on her tests comes from her lectures. Honestly, the class is much easier than the general chemistry pre-requisites required for the course.
Dr. Bean literally walks you through all the material, it's up to you to practice what she teaches you. Look for past exams because it gives you access to many different types of problems that could potentially show up on exam and the more you look/practice, the easier to get at least a B. NO EXCUSE TO NOT DO WELL. It was a breeze in my opinion.
These 2 tests make up 54% of your grade, attendance quizzes (which she's about to stop doing due to cheating) are 6% and the final is 40%. SHOW UP TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION. The textbook is OK to review, but the problems don't make good practice. Find the old tests online and just PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. If you fail it won't be Bean's fault.
if you want an A+ in this class you have to attend every lecture take notes and practice dozens of problems. 3 tests one is dropped final cumulative. Very easy class if you put in the work does require alot of practice outside of class and alottt of studying be prepared on hmwk no quizzes. PUT IN THE WORK YOULL GET AN A++
This post is for the lab. organic chem lab requires alot of reading from the lab manual. if you read before the lab day theory and procedure you wont be lost during the lab. videos are also posted so watch those before the lab day. Theres 3 quizzes, midterm, and final read every lab youll make an A. labs usually take all 6 hours except 1 or 2
Pick a good TA please! I cant stress this enough. The professor does NOT grade a thing. Drop right away if you think your TA is problematic because she wont anything about it !! And dont bother come to her and complain about her TA because she will side with her TA! Lab tests are super hard, very small curve.
This class moves very quickly and Prof. Bean does a great job presenting the material. You can not pass this class without practicing problems on your own. Grade is determined by 3 midterm exams (1 dropped) and a final. If you can, take the workshop as it helps a lot. I did not use the textbook bc it didn't help me. Bean is the best orgo prof @ UH
My TA was great. Very helpful and receptive to questions. The midterm and final are also very fair. It is easier to get an A in this laboratory than the general chemistry ones.
Bean is a hard professor but knows the material very well. She is willing to answer questions and gives very clear explanations. You'll need to do as many practice test as you before the exam to do well. Skip lecture and you'll regret it. She can go really fast so you must read ahead - she can cover a chapter and a half in one week.
Great professor, clear details about each topic and enjoys teaching. Do the poppers and practice problems and you'll be fine. Find her old exams and practice if possible.
She's an amazing professor orgo itself is a hard subject because it's a lot of information but she makes it easy because her tests are based off lectures
The hype is real, and she lived up to it. I love her Orgo 1 and 2. She deserves her credit when people say she's the best science professor.
She made her tests harder this semester, because she no longer requires attendance, so she's trying to get people to come this way. However, the people who don't show are the ones who do well without going, so by making her tests harder she's hurting the ones who are actually trying. It makes no sense.
tough but fair
Tough and not a very good teacher. Learned more from workshop.
I really didn't like the way that bean taught, but that's just me. She explains concepts really well but definitely doesn't do many other problems. The class is structured in a way where you print blank copies of her notes and fill it in in class while she fills it in as well. Try to get into a workshop if you can, it will help!
I had this professor last semester for orgo 1 and went to talk to her early on because I was having difficulty with the material. I figured it would be best to get help early on but when I told her how I was feeling she looked at me as if struggling in ochem was unheard of. Didn't take orgo 2 this semester, saving it for when someone else teaches.
One of the worst professors ever. She relies on her lab TAs to carry out the class and will side with them no matter the issue. Ridiculous.
This is my second semester with Dr. Bean and she is wonderful as always. Very engaging lectures and tests that come straight from her lecture notes. Attend class, pay attention, and take notes. So many people that failed this semester simply skipped class because attendance wasn't required.
I made an A in both Orgo I and II lab without any problems. The lab corresponds with the lecture, the curves for the lab are assigned per section, and all quizzes are made by the TA. This lab was easier to get an A in than the General Chemistry labs. Talk to your TA the first day of lab to know what they expect from your lab reports.
Dr. Bean gives you every single resource you need in order to make an A in her class. If you don't make an A, it's legitimately because you didn't try hard enough. Ochem is HARD, but Dr. Bean really focuses on what you NEED to know. This class is NOT easy, and you'll spend DAYS studying for exams. She curves the final grades. Study early for ACS!!
Dr. Bean's class is very difficult, and I didn't really find the lectures, textbook, or wall of text notes helpful at all. My recommendation is to take workshop, go to office hours, practice on worksheets or textbook problems. Old tests, old tests, old tests. For ACS work the whole ACS book. Sweet and caring professor though
This class is curved and based on average. Dont help anyone, I sabotaged people so they failed and made the curve graceful. Dont go to class, it does not make sense. Office hours are great, she answers everything. She got mad at our class so no more attendance, the whole class grade is tests so your welcome on making your class harder :) :) :)
Fantastic lecturer. Bean makes organic chemistry clear, but lecture attendance is critical. Learn her note packets inside and out and work as many back of chapter problems as possible, as organic is all pattern-recognition. Tests are straightforward but challenging, although she gives you all the information you need; no tricks/surprises.
Professor Bean is great at making you realize you're really dumb. I changed my major due to this class. She is very vengeful of students who skip class and has no sympathy for students whatsoever. She says on the first day of class not to ask questions so beware of that. Lots of people recommend to take her and I listened but they were wrong.
Dr. Bean is the best organic chemistry lecturer at the University of Houston. Organic 1 is challenging, however she tries her best to help everyone out. Grading scale is altered every semester to fit the need of the class. Test are just like previous years, but that does not mean she wont surprise you with new type of questions. GO TO LECTURE!
Dr. Bean is a good professor and she really tries to make the concept easy to understand, may go a bit fast sometime. Tests are repetitive to previous years but she MIGHT surprise you with a different format or questions asked, but overall not too hard with effort i promise. If you know you gonna struggle take workshop or go to ACS for tutors.
Dr. Bean is a good professor and she really tries to make the concept easy to understand. Tests are repetitive to previous years but she MIGHT surprise you with a different format or questions asked, but overall not too hard with effort i promise. If you know you gonna struggle take workshop, go to ACS for tutors or go to her office.
60% midterms, 40% final, no attendance taken- you better come to class tho. She's a good lecturer but she goes too fast so just take a bunch of notes in class (whatever she says is fair game on exams), study notes AS YOUR PRIMARY SOURCE, use old exams as PRACTICE but do not rely. Like any other orgo course, you WILL study days/weeks in advance.
LAB is torture! labs usually took 3-4 hrs. lab reports take HOURS to do & are difficult. pop quizzes made by your TA. midterm made by TAs & are random Qs (usually manual based tho). final made by bean-- CONCEPTUAL-- if you dont UNDERSTAND labs inside and out you WILL not pass. doable but very time consuming and hard.
To do well, read your lab manual & know & UNDERSTAND everything from the labs. DO NOT SKIP ANY LABS ESP GRIGNARD despite what people tell you! You have to do every lab, read every lab, know why and how everything connects and works. 3 quizzes + TA evaluation 10%, midterm 10% (hard), final 20% (also hard), my section avg were 55s.
Dr. Bean is an amazing professor. Her tests are pretty straightforward if you do all the exams from previous years as practice. You should really focus on understanding the concepts. She has mad minute quizzes that you *should* do to make sure that you're keeping up with the material. As for lab, study the manual and understand the material
You need to practice a lot, and be sure to read notes because she knows people just look at past exams and not her notes. GRADE DEPENDS ONLY ON EXAMS. Dr. Bean is a great professor but it's irritating seeing how much you put in effort but still come out dry. If you're hesitant, please take a workshop. TA's will help A LOT. Good luck...
Professor bean is a nice person, but she noticed that a lot of people were getting familiar with her old exams, so she decided to change a lot of things up. No matter how much you practice (going to tutoring, self studying, etc.) youll still end up unprepared for her exams. She makes them really tough. I regret taking her.
Her TAs dont know what theyre doing. Extremely tough grader. Took a lot of points off for dumb stuff. Pay attention to how the TA is, if they come off as a unreliable, they most likely are and you likely wont pass. I regret my TA deeply and hope she gets mental help
Orgo lab is hard. The TAs could be tough on you but you just have to pull through. Just make sure how the TA is before continuing the class. Study the manual and hopefully youll be fine
She is a good professor and gives good lectures, way better than the gen chem professors for sure. She has the pdf notes online to write along with. On exams she does throw some curveballs because she knows we use her old exams for practice so be sure to look for hints on lectures of what could be on exam.
She is not a bad teacher but the class itself is hard. I spent A LOT OF TIME on this class to go over old tests the past years. Make sure to understand the mistakes you made during practice tests. However I don't like the way she presented her notes. She used big pointed marker on a small piece of notes so it ended up really hard to see.
Bean is a great professor and Ochem is hard no matter who teaches it. Get your hands on as many old exams as you can and do them so often it burns into your retinas. Her lectures are pretty good but she does go fast.
Ochem lab experienced is largely dependent on your TA. You have to show up to every lab and your grades are generally curved up. However, unless you the top few students, you're probably not going to get an A or A-.
Organic Chem Lab depends on your luck entirely . If you are lucky you get an amazing TA and if not then you get stuck with some below par TA. There are TA's who follow the manual and some that don't. Some TA's allow group work some don't. I would recommend taking it off-campus and not risking your grade. Cheers!
She knows her stuff. Class does not require any purchase of textbooks or programs so you will be saving money AND OTHER PROFESSORS SHOULD LEARN FROM HER WE ARE BROKE COLLEGE STUDENTS. THANKS FOR NOT REQUIRING US TO PURCHASE ANYTHING AND HER LECTURE NOTES ARE GOOD ENOUGH. But besides that, she is a good professor but you have to study and work hard.
Making an A in organic chemistry is not as hard as people make it especially with Dr. Bean. Her notes are key as well as old exams. The 1st exam is usually the easiest and progressively gets harder. I went to class twice and studied 2 days before the exams & managed to make a B. However, I do not recommend this! Go to class and study early!!
Take her for both Ochem 1 and 2 or else ochem 2 will be very hard!! I learned that the hard way... Learn the reactions and youll be fine! Dr Bean is an amazing professor and she cares about her students. YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP TO PASS! If you miss lectures itll be hard to catch up. Doable but hard.
Dr. Bean is one of the greatest professors of my undergrad career. Her test come straight from her lectures/quizzes. You will have a solid foundation of organic chemistry after taking her. Key to doing well is understanding the material, and do your best on the first test, because they progressively get harder throughout the semester.
Dr. Bean is a great professor. Explain things clearly and exams aren't too different from the tests. That being said, you gotta practice a lot. The worksheets on website by her former student like ochemweb weebly com has so many practice questions including her old exams. Practice those worksheets and old exams you will greatly benefit.
Exactly what is on her notes are on the test. If you have the notes studied perfectly you will do good. I slacked in orgo 1 which held me back. If I woulda done good in orgo 1 I wouldve made an A, but because I slacked and made a C,it made this class harder than it was. If you made a C in orgo 1 you will struggle in this course. I had to work HARD
This review is for Orgo 1 lab. People make it seem harder than it actually is. Labs are long and kind of hard, but TA's usually give out 100s on lab reports. Quizzes are easy and extremely basic. Memorize the lab manual and all the reagents/purpose for the midterm and final. Try to get old midterms and finals as they are extremely similar.
If you want a B you don't have to go to class, but if you want an A, go to class (unlike Orgo 1). To get a B, do old tests and watch Ayman Youssef's videos on YouTube for content. For me, it wasn't worth studying to get an A because I knew I would do bad on ACS. If you really want an A, go to class & start the ACS study guide after the 2nd test.
Honestly just look at her notes, memorize the rxns early so you dont have to worry about it later and so you can focus on concepts, and do practice tests, including her really old ones. Do all that and you can make an A on her tests and final. ACS was not as bad as I thought it would be, get your hands on a ACS workbook, and you'll be fine.
Bean is the best orgo professor you can take. Everything you will need is found in her notes, so make sure you understand and know everything on there. The best way to study for her class is to work on old exams, work on the quizzes (test questions come from here sometimes), memorize reactions early, and attend SEP tutoring/sign up for workshop.
Best orgo professor and amazing lecturer. If you want to do good in this class be sure to practice old exams, also if u know chem is a weak subject take workshop cuz it really helps. Bean does throw a few curveballs in exams because she knows we have access to old exams so be sure to go over her notes.
Bad professor. I didn't learn a single thing going to her lectures, but rather learnt everything from workshop. I was part of the class that was not able to take exam 1 due to the tropical storm and as such my grades suffered. She knows we have access to her old tests, so she continually tries to add as much variation as she can to her tests.
here's the thing. bean is the best prof out of all the other ochem profs on campus. the problem is that bean doesn't make the class easy to understand, so imagine what the others are probably like. the grades I got were solely due to workshop and practicing old exams. that's the only way you'll pass the class, imo. overall, average class and prof.
DO NOT TAKE HER! If you are pre-med or any other pre-health student, she will ruin your GPA. The grade comes from only 3 exams and a final - no quizzes, hw, or EC to help your grade. She knows students can access her old exams, so she intentionally makes the new exams way different. No matter how hard you study, the tests are unreasonable.
I took her for both orgo 1 and 2. I learned nothing from her lectures. She goes way too fast and assumes we just understand everything. I learned everything through youtube, ACS, and study groups. She made things as complicated as possible during this pandemic and did not take students into consideration at all. Made me lose my respect for her.
People are frustrated by how she handled the pandemic so there'll be some bad reviews. Overall a good prof, but I definitely agree she could've been more understanding with this whole thing instead of fixating on cheating. She thought that her mc final was lenient enough but it was harder since there were questions we couldn't really prepare for.
I think the way she handled the shutdown was a big miscalculation on her part. Made the test extremely difficult considering it was your entire grade. Hardly a good representation of your mastery of the subject. Students still cheated on the final exam. I know many who did. She made herself and the department look out of touch and apathetic.
Her way of handling this pandemic was absolutely horrible. She made the test extremely hard and it was not at all reflective of what we were prepared for. We were treated extremely unfairly and its just so upsetting how every other prof can accommodate accordingly to this unfortunate situation were all in but she couldnt. So disappointed in her.
Very unreasonable during the pandemic. I can only hope that future students don't have her during a time of crisis; she doesn't handle it well at all. Tests weren't reflective of what she prepared us for. Future students are likely to have her normal class so, my advice is to practice from her previous exams and watch a lot of supplemental videos.
She's definitely a good professor, may even be the best OChem professor at UH, but she prioritizes the course over the student's needs as proven through this pandemic. Regardless, she does get to the point, is a very great lecturer, and is readily available for you when you have any types of questions!
The best OCHEM teacher at UH. She clearly enjoys teaching this class. FYI ,OCHEM is not easy. You have to work for it. I am a bio major and OCHEM classes were the most challenging and stressful classes. Be prepared to read. You are lucky if you have her as a teach...
Contrary to the negative reviews, I think Dr. Bean is a great professor and handled the pandemic situation in a fair way. Her class is doable, it just requires a ton of work as expected. She is a great lecturer- very detail oriented, but that will get you on the exams. Her exams are tricky and focused on minor details, so never skim over details.
Don't get me wrong, Dr. Bean is an amazing orgo professor, but her tests were heavy and unexpected during this COVID pandemic. You had to work hard and know all the concepts in order to pass but the situation wasn't the best for learning and testing purposes and our test was overall difficult to take with the amount and timing.
This semester we have to move to online learning. Dr. Bean has tried her best to adapt to the new technology and make herself available to us. The final were a combination of test2,test3 and the final test and make sure you know all the facts and reactions. Definitely take her again
During the pandemic, Bean was not accomodating and made the class more difficult. Cancelled Test 2&3 and said we wouldn't be able to do it. Then decided to give us a 60 question final exam, (20Q Test 2 grade, 20Q Test 3 grade, 20Q final exam grade). I don't think it was fair to the students to base a whole semester's grade off few questions
Before the pandemic, I didn't have issues; in fact, I passed the first exam with an A. But right as we moved online, things became significantly harder. She didn't handle the move well, but I don't blame her because she's not tech-savvy. The final was like everyone else said, and I think my first exam saved me from taking the S. Thankful it's over.
i dont know why everyone at uh says bean is good for orgo. exams are 94% of your grade, theres no homework, practice exams, or practice problems to prepare yourself. youre expected to study using outside sources and considering covid, she made 0 accommodations for students and made the exams even harder than before. she also sucks at technology.
Professor Bean has to be the most inconsiderate professor at UH, especially during this pandemic. Grades rely on two midterms roughly 30% each and a final that is 40%. Exams are really hard and grading scale has not been discussed with the class yet because she doesn't want to give out any A's. Don't waste your time.
Professor Bean is the worst definition of rude. She is not considerate at all and does not care about her students. She did not try to accommodate us during this deadly, global pandemic. She has not even put up a grading scale yet, so we don't even know what grade we are at right now. I wish I could give her a rating of zero.
Very unaccommodating, doesn't post lectures or slides, has not posted grade scale, and 94% of your grade are tests(2 midterms 27%, 1 final 40%). She has made this course ridiculously difficult, I would not recommend it.
the only thing she BEAN is being rude. This woman is not it, she is not considerate. DO NOT take her. I repeat DO Not take her. The worst professor in the history of education. She did not even give us a grading scale and made impossible pass exams. She is making me reconsider my whole life choices and was very very very inconsiderate during covid.
Its extremely test heavy. The online class has two midterms (27% each) final (40%), and 6% attendance. The online exams are formatted differently from previous exams, making the exams really hard. She will only let us know the grading scale after Exam2. I studied a lot for this class but didn't do well. Extremely hard class, do not recommend
Look, Orgo has been and always will be difficult. It always has been test heavy, idk why people are complaining now. It definitely requires textbook and ALOT of practice; there's plenty of sources she's given us. Yes, we didnt know the grading scale till later, but that's because she has to gauge how skewed the grades were to make the curve fair
Ochem is a tough class. Extremely test heavy. She usually gives 3 midterms dropping 1, but since COVID, she limited it to 2 tests which doesn't help. You cannot mess up on a test or your grade really drops. Online test is 20 questions no partial credit. The curve is generous. She is a bit blunt with students and very strict with her grading.
We get it. Ochem is a hard subject, but bean is trying way too hard to prevent cheating to a point where students can't even pass the exams since she's making them so hard. The outside sources she provides and her exam material are on two totally different levels. Don't be fooled by the 3.7 rating. Do NOT take her. Especially during COVID-19.
2 midterms, 1 final. No drops, replacing. Multiple choice, no partial credit, even though some questions require multiple answers (doesn't want to "deal with the technology"). 2 sheets of scratch paper for 60 questions (why?). View one question at a time on final because "blackboard IT advised". Loves orgo but couldn't care less about her students.
I decided to retake her because I remember she was pretty good at teaching in-person. I wish I could say the same for online teaching, I regret with every ounce of my body retaking her and not taking any of the other OChem professors, you will be graded only on 3 exams and she will argue that her way is "fair" no matter how awful her decisions are.
One of the worst chemistry professors i've ever had, she is very inconsiderate and has a horrible grading scale, the class average is set to a C-, a C+ is reasonable, but come on a C-... She is also very rude when you ask certain questions and unresponsive to emails. Extremely illiterate in technology.
This was the first class I have ever had to drop with a W. I made A's in general chemistry and am a pretty good student, just for reference. Maybe it is the online format, but this was the worst class I have ever taken at UH. Avoid her during COVID. Poor teacher, condescending. Nice when my grandpa died, but that was the only time.
I really wanted to like Dr. Bean, but she isn't a great professor. I am typically an A student and have never failed a class before for scale. However, I found her class to be extremely difficult. Aside from the content, Dr. Bean is not very receptive to student feedback or communication. Would not recommend her at all.
Listen. Just, listen. If you can avoid this class do it, if you have ANY alternative ANY do it. The professor is ill suited for the online shift and has a rather I dont care that the shift has also made your life harder attitude too. Grade all exams, rushes through lecture I can go on and on. Just Run.
Horrible. She goes so fast during the lectures, and if you solely depend on the lectures, you simply will not pass. You will need a lot of outside resources. Class average is C-, and she does not care about the students. This class and Orgo 2 are probably the most stressful, and she does not make it any better.
Initially enrolled in her class cause of feedback that she was a good prof, but I'm not sure if it was corona or something that changed that because she seems to have no care for students actual success in this class. Contrary to some other sections where 70% of their grade is quizzes, this class' entire grade is 100% exams. Run, just run.
The final had to be taken at 8 AM even though midterms were taken at 7PM. Never responds to emails. Has a very rude attitude. Her lectures will not be enough to prepare for her multiple-choice exam. She gave no multiple choice practice, only one practice exam for the first test. Had to self teach my self with textbook to understand the material.
Probably the worst professor you'll ever have to encounter in your life. She acts like her students already have PhDs in organic chemistry and that one example is more than enough to teach a whole concept. 2 Tests worth 27% each, Final worth 50% and attendance 6%. If I had to say one word to her, it would simply be "RETIRE." Worst prof in history.
The material is not difficult and the exams are not that hard. Since there is so much material to cover, Bean provides little examples. Expect to read the textbook, do lots of practice, rewatch lectures, and watch chad's videos plus YT to grasp the material. Enroll in a workshop if you can or get workshop sheets from other people. Generous curve.
Dr. Bean took her frustrations over remote learning out on the students. She got rid off the 3rd midterm ( only possible reasoning is that she simply didn't want to make it). I had a technical difficulty during an exam and she said "too bad". Also rude during office hours. Expect lots of emails threatening academic honesty violations. Curves well
Dr. Bean seems like she was an excellent professor in person but during online classes she seems to be struggling. Her paranoia of cheating got the best of her and as a result she created ridiculously difficult exams. On top of that, 3 exams make your entire grade. If it's any hint to what the course is like, she didn't omit an exam ? w/ a typo.
So basically your grade in this class in online format will be 2 midterms worth 27%, the final is worth 40% and attendance is 6%. I really do wish she would've provided quizzes like in a normal semester since her grading is nothing but exams. But here's the thing, Dr. Bean teaches the material very well. PS the curve is also VERY generous.
There's never been a day I attended class and understood a single word this lady was saying. She goes so fast and her notes are literally the summary of the textbook. You CANNOT survive on her notes alone. My saving grace was reading the textbook for EACH chapter, using Zade Faraj Worksheets and prayer. She does give a generous curve at the end tho
I had a 89.5 average in the labs, last minute when the semester is over she curves the grades down, I now have a C in the lab. This women needs to retire
test heavy, but not too bad. If u understand the concepts and don't procrastinate, you will do fine. She heavily curved final grades according to the class avg(38% was D-,A-82%). Lecs were long+ I could barely pay attention., but it is Ochem. She was a bit paranoid of cheating, but ppl are stupid and try to take the easy way, so theres that.
Although Dr. Bean is a good professor, you are on your own. If you want to do well in this class be ready to use almost every outside resource (sign up for workshop!!) If this class was in person, I would give Dr. Bean a 4 or 5, but she made it harder for students to do well this sem (2 tests vs 3 with a dropped). Generous curve though 84 A
I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. Dont. She is more concerned about copyright and self-teaching than providing learning material or helping her students succeed. Deleted her lecture videos after 48 hours. Referred us to a website made by one of her past students for practice. Ripped a kid up for sharing a pdf textbook the first day.
Hard class but doable if you put in the time. Approachable and understanding professor as well.
I was holding off on actually making a review for Dr. Bean, but honestly. I'm upset. Her inflexibility and "sucks to suck" nature for her students got to me so bad, that I didn't even bother trying to reach out to her AS A HUMAN BEING. I missed out on my grandma's funeral back when I took Bean and honestly, I regret it. I deeply regret it.
incredibly rude
Goes through lecture too quickly, deletes lecture recordings after 48 hours, better off teaching yourself, too paranoid with cheating to help students succeed, inconsiderate, bad with technology, needs to retire.
Dr. Bean is a great professor and I think she made huge improvements this semester compared to fall20. Her test were easier this semester or I just figured out how to approach the MC questions. I learned a lot from her, she is a solid choice if you ask the right questions and know how to take her comments or what people call a "ruthless" response.
Took her for Ochem I lab class and she was pretty much nonexistent. Had the toughest grading TA that purposly curved down because if they are too lenient they will end up curving down everyones grade. So it was impossible to make an A in a LAB CLASS. she purposely makes the TAs curve down when grading the labs to ensure that the class isnt too easy
Prioritizes cheating on exams over the success of students. Youre basically on your own, lectures not very helpful. Is NOT understanding of students. This is a difficult class and if you want to do good you HAVE to put in a lot of study time on your own.
I took Dr. Bean both semesters and let me tell you, she is an amazing professor. If you want to actually learn orgo, then she is a solid choice. Your grade is practically made up of only exams, but you have to work hard to earn the grade you want. The curve is also amazing. I got a 62, and ended up with a B-.
I took both orgo 1 and 2 lab. In orgo 1 my grade got rounded down to an B+ because of my Easy TA but this semester in orgo 2. My TA was impossible with her harsh grading but I still ended up with B+ because in the end Dr Bean did abide to her syllabus to even out the grade. Take the lab with the lecture; it will help you in the long run in orgo 2.
Honestly, when it comes to orgo, the class will be hard regardless of the professor. The class is 100% test grades, and considering how hard the class is, it would be nice if she gave some structured practice (homework). I would reccomend taking workshop with this class. Overall she's not bad, just not great- and you dont really have many options.
I took this class twice, 1st time got a C- 2nd time got an A. Heres the key to success: the notes are NOT enough, read the book and DO ALL the prac problems given between sections. Do n redo all the quizzes she offers, she'll tell u about a website from a ex-student, do all those too, after reviewing and doing all this do all the old exams given
4 tests, lowest grade was dropped. TAKE WORKSHOP WITH CLASS. I never attended lecture because they were not helpful, workshop will give you assignments needed to learn/practice! Tests were reasonable and not too difficult, workshop will prepare you. Curve was very generous. Ended up with an 85 and got an A for the class.
Dr. Bean is by far the best orgo prof at UH, orgo is hard but take it with bean to have a fighting chance. I was scared of orgo for years and ended with an A-. The first exam is the easy one so secure a good grade. I read the chapters and did problems at the end of the chapter, studied her notes, and studied the past exams. study every single day!
Has decent notes on her website. Key is study groups, zade faraj, & old exams. Never used the book but used 1 3rd party book and her notes. Quizzes are helpful. 3 exams and 1 final. Lowest exam dropped. 1st exam is easy but get way harder in the 2nd. 2nd & 3rd ex around same difficulty
Bean expects you to be able to do a 6 hour lab in a 4 hour period. Its almost impossible. Depending on your TA, they might eliminate some steps. My TA graded my labs very leniently, failed every pop quiz, made a 60 on the final, and ended up with a C+. There was no curve for my class. Youd have to me memorize the labs to do good on the quizzes.
I'm confused onto why they changed the lab hours from 6 hours to a 4 hour lab. My TA was great, but the quizzes and finals were hardest things I completed. The lab is a lot worse than lecture. I did great on the lab reports, but I failed all the quizzes, and my classes' lab final was around a 40. The curve barely helped me.
Every TA is different with each lab having different grading criteria, quizzes, and final exams, and they don't give much feedback when you do something wrong. The lab itself doesn't correlate to the material from the lecture, so expect to spend time studying for this class. If you don't read the manual or watch the prelab you will be very lost.
Bean is a good professor and her lectures can be somewhat interesting, but beware this class takes ALOT of work. Organic chemistry is not an easy class so I would recommend taking a workshop 100% (it saved me) Bean's class is tests only with no homework or extra credit. Most of the work will come from outside of class.
Class test averages 40s and 50s but states that it is normal. No homework, only tests. No extra credit.
She does not do much. Goes through notes and thats about it. You are on your own for Exams. She mentions the workshop... as if we should take it if we want to do good. No... workshop is their as a supplement... as an instructor you need to provide as many resources as possible to ensure each student can pass. Lecture and quizzes isnt exam prep.
Absolutely disgusting how some TAs allow students to cheat on quizzes and very leniently grade labs, whilst other TAs proctor absurd quizzes and grade labs as dissertations.. As an instructor it is your JOB to ensure FAIRNESS regardless of the TA. DO BETTER. stop being LAZY AND STANDARDIZE the course. "CURVING" isnt SOLUTION!disservice to students
Even though she is not the actual instructor for the lab, the lab itself is so awful I feel that she, as the person in charge, should receive the brunt of the blame. (Depending on TA) Quizzes are impossible, labs are incredibly long, and grading is extremely strict. How is it fair that some can put in minimal effort for maximal grades? Awful course
the only thing I like about taking bean is that she has a lot of practice exams from her 20 years of teaching. other than that she's pretty useless. class doesn't help much. be prepared to do LOTS of outside studying.
Dr. Bean is average. Plain average. Literally nothing special and nothing awful. My recommendation is just do as many of the practice exams as possible and call it a day. If you retain orgo very well, certainly make the effort to really understand everything she goes through in class, but you still have to go through the practice exams.
Best professor compared to others that are available. It's doable to do well, you just have to do the work.
Literally the same thing as Orgo 1 except she goes faster. Just go over practice exams and quizzes. Ask workshop kids for extra practice.
Dr. Bean is a wonderful professor, but this class is extremely difficult. Unless you absolutely aced Organic Chem 1, I would highly recommend taking this at a community college so it doesn't tank your GPA.
Standard organic chem lab format. Experiments were not too difficult, but preparing for quizzes and final was a bit difficult.
She provides no useful or detailed notes or explanation for the material that actually helps you out. Your grade is fully dependent on her tests. She is horrible and boring lecturer.Does NOT go over examples in a clear detailed manner in class. Tries to be funny but is so cringe , everyone in class dreads it. Does not upload notes after class.
She puts in zero effort in her notes, extremely un detailed and unhelpful for learning the concepts. Her lectures were not helpful as she sucks at time management of lecture leaves important stuff last min to be rushed. Would not recommend her. I donot know how university has hired bunch of unqualified professor to teach orgo. waste of time, money
I am disappointed I took her class. After finishing her course I can confirm she writes all her good reviews. Take this class somewhere else. She sucks big time in every aspect. Bad lectures and horrible notes. Grade based on tests solely. Literally a disservice to students. how is she still teaching questionssss??
Save your self and dont take her ! No matter what! This is coming from straight A student. She doesnt have passion for teaching or helping students understand. Loves to complicate and make her tests unbearable. No cap the worst science professor I took at UH! Has no regard for her students mental health. If you wanna stay sane stay away !
Exams are worth 100%. 3 midterms, but one is dropped, meaning one midterm is worth 30% and the final is worth 40%. She zooms through her lectures so its really hard to follow her, and on top of that does not post her notes online. Course structure/format is terrible, because exams are so heavy but she doesn't really care about helping students.
The course set up is a disservice to the students and her lectures are beyond confusing to the point that students in workshop explained things better than her. She did not create useful notes or practice material over the course of 20 years, relies on the past student zaid faraj worksheets. If you ask questions in lecture expect to be belittled
It's so bad I want to give you a zero. But that's not possible so I give you a one.
1 is way too generous for this professor's garbage class/lab. It's literally designed to destroy GPAs. The class has a toxic stigma around UH, and after suffering through it, I can confidently say that the problem isn't the students or the content, it's the professor's archaic and mean-spirited ways that bring down the class.
I am rating more the class structure than Dr. Bean herself. You basically have to do well on 2 midterms and the final to get an A in this class. You self teach yourself through ACS videos and lots of practice exams. Dr. Bean's lectures can be interesting but you mainly learn from practice exams.
Honestly, organic chemistry is supposed to be hard. I think the way she tested us was fine, just make sure o get copies of old exams and set aside a lot of time if u want an A.
Mary Bean isn't the best lecturer to be honest. Sometimes she went too fast and I had to rely on ACS or workshops to help me learn the material. Her notes sometimes helped, but the main goal to succeed in this class is IDNS workshop and ACS reviews. 60% midterm 40% final grade.
Explanation videos for this lab is an F at best yet they expect you to perform a flawless experiment. If even a tiny bit of your experiment is not as expected then the instruction is a massive point deduction. Plus who on earth thought it was a good idea for different lab sections to take different quizzes that vary in complexity?
It doesn't matter if you get an A on every assignment, you will most likely not get an A in the class!!! Boo bean. :(
Good teacher! I skipped most of her classes, but if you do like 7-15 of her old practice test you'll do well. Learn how to study. Don't slack and then complain when it was too hard. The class is not difficult as long as you spend time to actually learn and study it.
The major con to her teaching is just that she goes very quickly in lectures. The resources she gives out are very beneficial though. If you try hard enough, getting a good grade is very attainable. This class isn't necessarily hard, but with enough studying, things come easier, and it's honestly a bit fun.
For Orgo 2, shes a good teacher. She explains her content well. A con is that her handwriting is really bad, making it hard to read what she writes. Make sure to study, you won't pass by just going to her lectures. In order to do good spend at least at week of studying, about 5-6 hours a day, if you can do this you'll get high A's
The info from Professor Bean was okay, however, I came on here to let students know not to take Yuhang Zhang as your TA unless you want to be degraded, lost, and just despise coming to the lab. I was micromanaged constantly in class, he would stand over my shoulder, and told I didn't know what I was doing and zero feedback on assignments
She is awful. She is the worst. Never in my life have I taken a teacher so bad.
I still have nightmares that i'm stuck in the lab watching my simple distillation apparatus yield a flow rate of 1-3 drops/second as prescribed by the textbook wondering where everything went wrong in my life. But other than that it was alright, you just have to sell your soul to the orgo overlords in addition to 5-10 hours a week on pre/post labs.
Expect to do a lot of work. Only taking lecture isn't enough taking the workshop is very important. Past exams will help you practice and the tests are pretty straightforward. She goes very fast and doesn't put her notes online. Pretty straightforward class but you need to put in a lot of effort outside of class in order to succeed. TAKE WORKSHOP!!
Honestly speaking, the class in its nature is difficult but Bean is the best professor available besides Olaf. Professor Bean is one of those "mean smart" people who make you intimidated to say you don't understand something. She is a bit snarky BUT, who cares about that. I'm literally paying to be here so you gon' answer these questions my dear.
Nightmarish tests and goes too fast in lectures.
My TA was Andrew and he was awesome, he is organized enough that you will have time to complete your lab on time. It is true that labs quizzes are hard I barely pass them and the final was hard too. That's why you need to do good in the lab reports. TA is randomly selected tho so good luck.
do her past exams and you will be fine. there is a huge bell curve.
Orgo is challenging but the only way to fail this class is by not putting in enough effort. Attending lectures, taking notes, ACS exam reviews, practice exams, and enrolling in a workshop are key to passing. She is very nice, receptive to questions, and her lectures are a joy to attend. She also prepares you really well for the ACS test. take her!
Not sure why people don't like her. Her exams are tested based on the material she teaches in class. She does go fast sometimes, but it's not too bad to keep up. Review previous exams and attend class, and you'll be okay for the exams.
Dr. Bean is a good professor and clearly knows what she's teaching. She knows organic chemistry through and through. Her tests can be difficult but if you do enough practice exams you'll be fine.
This professor moves very fast in class and does not post any of her notes. Even if you miss class due to being sick she will not budge on giving lecture notes. Her test is the opposite of the practice tests and she wants her overall class grade to be a C!! Unless you are okay with all of this do not take it.
Dr. Bean is an okay professor. This review is for the O. Chem 1 lab and she has TAs that do this. Some of her TAs like Usman Nazeer are an absolute nightmare. Please be very careful when making your selection and hope for a good TA. Make sure you read the syllabus and lab notebook carefully. Go over pre-lab lecture, too, because grading is tough
Grades are based purely on test. Some of her lectures are hard to understand, but if you do her old test (that are all online btw) you should be fine. Only complaint is that she raises the difficulty of her test based on the class average, if it's anything higher than a 50, be prepared for a hard test. it's not completely impossible though.
Dr Bean is an excellent professor and very kind and knowledgable. HOWEVER, this class is difficult. She straight up tells you on the first day that only 10% of the 300+ students in this class will get As. The material is hard but she is very organized, responds to emails on time and actually knows how to teach. I would take her again .
Does not teach. Idk what else to tell you. Her notes are not helpful at all and she glosses over her explanation of a lot of important things. She makes her class hard for no reason and seems to dislike when people are doing well. Organic chemistry itself is not a hard subject but she definitely manages to make it hard. Good luck hahahhahahahahahah
Dr. Bean was a good professor in my opinion, but just like any other class you have to put in work outside of class. I'm normally not a smart student but I studied old practice exams, went to ACS, did all of the quizzes before class and I came out okay. There's always more to do to get a higher grade! This isn't the class to be complacent.
Honestly shes a pretty good professor. If you use the textbook and do the testbook problems, take in class notes, start doing her previous year tests a week before the exam and ask questions/office hours you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure to time manage and do not fall behind (she also curves plenty):)
the only way to succeed in her class is to practice. All her practice tests are available online, do them and you should be set for each test.
A good chunk of the time my brain was fried during her lectures, but occasionally she would throw in a joke or two to make class feel less content heavy. Practice problems are the key to success.
Never went to lectures since she talks about a lot of things that almost never make it on the test. It is necessary to do many practice tests since she mostly teaches concepts when the test is almost all practical. I would not like to recommend her but since she is one of the only ochem prof you just have to make do.
Curve was nonexistent. Definitely would avoid at all costs
I didn't find the lectures helpful, she has practice exams which is a must to do well in this class. She's really sweet in office hours and responds to emails fairly quickly. There's a big fat curve at the end, you just need a 50% to get a C-
Prelab videos are often not what is done in lab. Grade is overly dependent on the TA you receive. If you get the TA Yuhang Zhang, I strongly urge you to switch out or drop the class. He is a very poor aid in lab and takes massive point deductions with no explanation or feedback for future improvement. Labs are long and TAs are no help (no group).
This class is tough, but Dr. Bean is a pretty good prof. Practice old exams and use tools like unstuckstudy AI to prep - that's key to doing well. Her lectures can be dense, but she throws in some jokes to keep it interesting. Just don't fall behind, stay on top of things, and you'll be alright.
I lost a year of my life every time I interacted with this professor. The class isn't hard but she makes it unbearable.
Lab is led by TAs, but Bean is an insane professor. Pre and post lab's take 2-4 hours, instructions are vague and the manual isn't up to date with procedure. The quizzes vary from TA to TA so it's not fair. The final is insanely difficult and over the top. But, she's your only option for Organic Chemistry 1 lab, so good luck.
DO NOT TAKE. Lectures are useless. No extra credit, grade depends on 3 tests + final, no HW, quizzes or anything to help with your grade. She will not let you ask questions during lectures, you have to make an appointment for office hours. She is one of those "you should already know this from your previous chem classes so I won't explain this."
Dr. Bean is an amazing professor. Her exams are tricky though so you need to study hard for them but there is a very generous curve. You have to go to class though because sometimes she puts questions that are only on notes and not on any practice test. Most people who do bad skip her class/ dont put the time or effort that orgo needs.
Bean is a good professor that has alot of study resources for students. ENROLL IN SEP!! SEP and Practice exams are the only way to do well in the class. Come to class prepared because she teaches the material as if you should already know it. The second you are done with exam 2, start memorizing reactions for exam 3 and the final. Good prof
Dr. Bean is a good lecturer, however there are many things that will slip by you in lecture that will show up in the exams. Therefore, you MUST do practice exams!! Try to do all of them. Always come to class and write everything she says down. Also, enroll in SEP! They were my go-to for questions and they always explained the concepts super well.
Honestly a really awesome professor who wants you to learn and stay on top of your material. Study every week and digest the material in small chunks. Don't cram last minute. Also go to office hours if you need help, she's really helpful there!
Dr Bean is a lovely person, however, her lectures are pretty fast-paced and hard to keep up with, utilize her TAs, use the ACS and SEPs tutors, go to her office hours and I mean this from the bottom of my heart DO THE PRACTICE TEST CONSTANTLY. If u do bad on the first 3 exams the final MAY save you (based on a true story)
If you plan on taking Orgo 2, please take orgo 1 with Dr bean since she teaches orgo 2 and her content ties really well. PLEZZZZ ENROLL IN SEP!!!!!!!!!! I did SEP and practice exams on the weekly website and I got an A in the class so it's 100% doable. Ty a really good SEP facilitator, if u get him you're good
no homework and lectures are not helpful. self-study
Do not take if you did not take her for orgo 1, she has her own ways of explaining the material. Her notes were not that helpful and would recommend that you learn from the textbook. Please find a study group to help you as well.
For a one credit hour class, Organic lab took at minimum one year off my lifespan. Labs literally make you want to drop out of college and work at McDonalds. All you can do is pray you get a good TA. The final isn't too bad but you have to make sure you know every little detail about every single lab. Her lecture videos are pretty good though.
If you get Bhuja Murugan, just drop the lab.
