just study the lecture guides and look at the pictures in the book and you'll do well on the quizzes...she's really down to earth and she's likes to hear the students' perspectives so participate...and you should be fine

Awesome teacher
I really enjoyed this class even though it was a requirement. Professor Alger was a great teacher and a very nice person.

Just study the slides and any information she gives on short essays. She often lets class out early. Gives extra points for good attendance.
Excellent teacher, very nice, friendly. FAIR!!! Great with time management in class. Interesting!
By far the best teacher i had during my two years at Bridgewater state College. Her test are easy, and her class is enjoyable except when she covers architecture of old building, but everything else was very interesting.
I HAVE HER THIS SEMESTER AND SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER. HER TEST ARE EASY IF YOU STUDY THE STUDY GUIDE AND LOOK OVER THE PICTURE IN THE BOOK. SHE IS THE BEST!
She is sooo easy...basically if you just show up to class you are fine. However, if you are prone to falling asleep in class do NOT sign up for a morning class because you look at slides witht the lights off and it makes you wicked tired
Great teacher, makes it sleepy with the lighting but she's so sweet and understanding! TAKE HER!
Mary Beth is the best. She is very understanding and explains everything. This class has exams that are identify and essay and as long as you show up for class, read her handouts(written by Dunn) and look over the pictures in the book. She does turn the lights down for the slides, get pleny of sleep
This was one of my fav's in the semster. The teacher is so nice and sweet, u can tell she loves to teach this subject. Im not even close to an art major, but it was a wicked interesting class to take. I owuld deg. recommend her to all!
Wonderful teacher! I defiently recommend taking this class for a fine arts requirement. You can tell she loves teaching this class, and makes everything very easy to understand. She is a very fair teacher, and gives you many opportunities to boost your grade.Pay attenting in class and you'll do great
very nice... a little out there, but u can always write a make-up paper if you do bad on the test(4, all multiple choice), and she takes the better grade. one trip 2 the museaum and a final paper
The best professor I've had at BSC - she is so enthusiastic and alwasys in a good mood - kind of quirky - which adds to her personality! She makes me wish I were an Art major!
Really nice lady, you can tell she's really into teaching so that makes the class all the better. Found the tests to be a tad hard, just attend class and you'll be fine. I took her as a night class and she gave us all extra credit make ups :)

WICKED NICE, and easy. Make up qizzes, bonus questions, group bonus questions on final, makes the class go by fast. sit in front soyou dont fall asleep.
good class, take it.
She is very enthusiastic about the topics she teaches.I could tell she had a very good handle on the material, other times, I felt she did a poor job in disgusting some ideas and concepts of the styles of art.I did not care how early we got out of class. She was very good and I have a better understanding of the art that was created during this time
She is a very good teacher. She loves what she teaches and she loves artistic fashions. She is interesting, but sometimes the subject isn't
She's a really nice woman. She's very easy to listen to and take notes from because she loves it so much. Make sure you attend classes because she pretty much spells out what will be on the exam. The exams can be hard but if you take good notes and study you should do really well. I would definately take her again.
she is uses a very traditional teaching style and has companion for what she teaches. She is a wonderful and very knowledgeable.
Really easy, if you like watching a slideshow of crap for 50 minutes and listening to a lady orgasm over an ancient statue that has lime, and is chipped to hell. Then you will love this class. As boring as it was, if you have any intelligence at all you will get an A in this class. It's just soooo hard to stay awake. She is very nice.
one of the best prof in art history department. She knows her stuff and so brillant. she is compasionate about what she teaches and very respectful. she is old school when it comes to tests, essay, picture ID, compare and contrast works.take her I would recommand her highly.
She is excellent and has great passion for her subject. This class is not a easy A. Alot of memorization, one paper, essays on test along with slide id's. Her style makes it so very interesting that you are bound to do well unless of coarse you don't go to class. She can be quite whitty, dry sense of humor, dresses really cosmopolitian/interesting.
very good professor. gives study sheets for exams with possible essays and goes over each one in class. 3 exams and one museum paper. if you have to take an art history take mary beth alger.
She was so cute! Very into the material & knows what shes talking about. Dont take if ur not a morning person cuz all u do is look at slides w/ the lights off. Ask q's and let her get 2know ur name and u'll do fine. Its easy if ur interested in the material. 3exams including final and museum paper. Id def take another class with her again!
I would say she is one of the best professors at BSC I've had so far. She is really nice and caring about her students. She also makes the class interesting by not forcing so much work on you that you hate what you're doing. There are only 3 tests and a museum paper but all are pretty easy if you put some time into them. Take her!
One of the best professors i have ever had . She was amazing . hard quizzes , but if you pay attention and put pictures of the slides in your notes its easy . The class could have been boring but she had so much passion for the subject , it was hard not to have interest . Loved loved lovedddd her . i recommend everyone takes her class .
Amazing teacher, she really knows and loves what she's talking about. Besides that shes just a fantastic person, very understanding, and interesting. I've taken 2 classes with her, and loved them both. She's the reason that I changed to an ARTH major! Easy for even those that aren't really into Art History.
The best professor I have ever had at BSC. She's so smart with the material and really takes an interest in helping the student learn and pass her class. Material is easy if you like art history. Alger is superior in her field and tells you about all of the interesting things happening around town in the art world.
After having her for ARTH 201 and ARTH 202, I still think she is an amazing teacher, and one of the best I've had at BSC. I dreaded taking classes for the Art requirement but she is really interesting, makes the material fun, and is quite nice! The format is the same as 201 - 3 tests and a paper. Take her - you certainly won't regret it!
Alger is by far one of my favorite professors. I loved her class so much and will definitly take another one taught by her!
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!!! She gives our a study guide for each test and you can find all the slides on google. Tests consist of comparison, short essay, and slides. She is VERY excited about the material that she teaches and will always try to bring the best to class. Awesome prof!
EASY TEACHER!!!!!! Gives study guides for the exams and its all slides that are going to be on the exam. She marks the figure number and gives possible essay questions with it. 2 exams, museum paper, and final. easy take her to fill a fine arts requirement.
TAKE THIS CLASS! All she does is show powerpoint slides. 3 tests- but she gives you a study guide so you know exactly what's on it. One trip to the MFA and a paper on it. Book is NOT NECESSARY. Tends to cancel class a lot and let students out fairly early. Easy to fall asleep, but very nice professor overall!
wicked nice lady, very helpful will help with anything at all that you may need.... cancels class from time to time and she is a very easy grader... the only thing is you have to know the slides.... i didn't need to use the book you will find that she talks and describes the slides so much that they sorta just stick in your head i highly recommend!
Easy teacher!!!! Exams are not hard gives study guides only 2 exams, final and a museum paper. Easy take her!!
I found the level of difficulty semi high but she explains everything you need to know and we went over the exams the day before the exam. Very easy going but has expectations, attendance is one of them, you also should attend to be sure you don't miss out on good info. She has a fun personality and very much seems to enjoy what she teaches.ask ?
She is awesome!! She really got me excited with art history and I got excited for her classes, to listen and watch her awesome presentations. She's pleasent, intelligent, has a great personality, and sense of style.
She is great! She is so enthusiastic about art and really wants her students to do well. Take her!
This teacher is fantastic! I specifically chose to take this class with her after having her last semester. She is very passionate and knowledgable about this subject. She has a good sense of humor and is very clear with her expectations. take her! :)
She was so nice and it was easy. I didn't think I was into art until this class. The museum trip is a little annoying and time consuming but it was an easy A. I'd recommend taking her!
She is very nice and passionate about art. Attendence is taken every class, there are only 3 exams and 1 MFA paper. Non-art majors should take this only if you take the time to memorize different art pieces for the exam, then it's an easy A.
She is a nice lady but her test aren't easy. You need to study and her attend the class. The textbook is not needed. DO NOT BUY IT. 3 tests and 1 museum paper.
one of the great profess... she take attendence but its not give deal as long as you communicate with her, she very nice and helpfull. she will do as much she can to help student. i will recomend her. take her.
Easily one of my favorite professors I've had, and I'm not an art major or anything. She's very sweet and passionate about what she teaches. Tests are based on painting identification slideshows and are easy if you take good notes. One paper as a final grade where you have to go to the museum and observe art, but it's so easy.
Really boring class, professor is very sweet and passionate about the subject. However, perhaps she is too passionate, spending too much time on things that don't apply to exams. Fairly easy tests if you study, slide identifications, a comparison of artwork, and an essay. You do have to travel to Boston to visit the Musuem of Fine Arts for a paper.
She's a very nice and passionate professor, but the lectures will put you to sleep. If she was good at time management and actually reviewing what was on the tests, she'd be one of the better professors, because she actually knows what she's talking about.
Super nice woman. Passionate about her work. Lectures are boring at times, but very straightforward class. Pay attention in class and you can easily get an A. Museum Project was cool too.
I was completely awake and interested for all of her lectures, even in the early classes. She also throws in the scandalous info from the world of Art History...loved the videos on Caravaggio and David. One of my favorite classes to date.
This class is extremely boring, especially if you have no interest in art. However, it is straightforward. She tells you what to expect on tests and all powerpoints are online so no need to take notes. There is a required 5-7 page paper for a museum visit. Don't bother to buy the textbook.
The Class itself is boring, yet extremely easy to pass. memorize the slide list prior to the test and pay attention to the essay question and you will pass.Mid term requires a trip to the MFA in Boston (go after 4pm its free) paper has no set length but 4 is good. 3 test. No homework. stay off phone and your golden.
The lectures were so boring, but that is not her fault. Art history is a boring subject. She was nice. Attendance policy is good for skips and for extra credit. One trip to museum and a paper on it (which sucked, but all art history classes require it), fair tests with slide IDs, one essay from the study guide, and one random essay that was harder.
Loved this class. Professor Alger is very passionate about the material which made it a bit more interesting to me. I didn't expect to enjoy it at all but thoroughly did!! She's a very nice woman who appears to truly love her job!
boring lecture if you aren't into art but she is am awesome person and is really enthusiastic about her subjects. No book an very straight forward exams. one museum paper. i recommend for an art credit
SO passionate! You can tell she loves art of all forms, really. She is thorough and loves it when people talk-- except no one hardly chimed in in my class. If you dont like art, don't take the class. It's painful and unfair to watch someone try to hard to interest her students only to be met with silence from them because they're texting.
She is a passionate teacher. You can tell she cares about art and teaching. The class is not hard if you show up and take notes. The tests are only hard because there is alot to memorize.
She is the sweetest professor! Her tests and quizes are easy to pass, she keeps her lectures interesting, and she really cares for her students :) Even if youre not interested in art, id still recommend her!
She isn't boring. There is a mandatory trip to the MFA but not as a class. The tests are not hard if you study. She gives study guides. I don't like art but she made it interesting.
Every class is just power points of art and she talks about them, she shuts off the lights so I basically didn't pay attention ever. She gives study guides before every test and every test is the exact same if you study you will pass. You have to go to the MFA and write a paper but its really easy. I would recommend taking her for your art!
TAKE HER! I took her for ARTH 103 and 104. She is so lovely and the class is SO easy. There are only 4 tests and 1 essay. The tests consist of slide IDs, a comparison, and an essay. She gives you all the information you need to know! The additional essay requires you to go to the MFA but its an easy essay. Don't get the book. TAKE HER! TAKE HER!
She is so passionate about the material covered it makes the long lectures easy to get through. No homework and as long as you come to the lectures you should be fine -- I hardly used the book. Her lectures move quickly and she is very knowledgeable about everything covered so you're not confused on anything. Just genuinely interesting and nice.
Alger is a very nice and friendly professor. She gives amazing lectures and opens the class for discussion on any topic or artwork. I found her tests difficult and 2/3 I received a C on them. Final paper was fairly easy - museum visit required. A lot of memorization required for tests. Study hard and you'll do well. Never opened the textbook.
Only one paper which requires a visit to the MFA, but is really easy. You don't need to buy the book either. Only complaint is about the tests. You have to memorize about 40 works, but only puts 10 of them on the test, and she is strict when grading the comparison/essay part. The tests require a ton of studying if you want an A, but there's only 3.
Really nice teacher! Don't buy the book, i have not opened it once. Everyday is the same thing: notes, notes, and more notes. Not really notes, she just lectures about paintings. All you do is notes and then you have a test on those notes. Its a good class and wicked easy!
It's not often that professors actually care for the subject material they teach, but Professor Alger does. She is kind and approachable, and knows a lot about the art she teaches about, having been on trips around the world. There are three tests you need to study hard for, and one museum visit essay. Overall, I would recommend the class.
If you need to take Art History, take this Professor! Basically, if you show up to class, take notes, and study for the exams, you should get an A. You will also have to visit the MFA and write a paper about some of the artwork there. Visiting the museum might be a hassle but the assignment itself is very easy. I highly recommend this class.
This class has very long lectures, and if you're not into art history it can be boring. However, the professor is kind and passionate. If you have any questions she is willing to answer them. If you plan on taking this course, keep it mind that it is MANDATORY for you to visit the MFA or another museum on your own for a project. Keep the ticket!
Prof. Alger is an extremely sweet woman who cares about what she teaches. Attendance is mandatory & she doesn't normally allow computers in class unless you ask. Very understanding if you need extra help or if you miss class, just tell her. She gave us a hard time about using the bathroom in the beginning, but it didn't last.
Professor Alger is one of the best professors I've had at BSU, she makes a subject I don't generally love very interesting. Just be aware that a museum visit is required for this class but that and a few exams are really all your graded on. Also even if she tells you too, don't buy the book cause you'll never use it.
If you need art requirements, definitely take a class with her. Cares a lot about what she does. Class isn't hard, her study guides are usually posted at the beginning of the year so you can save time on notes by basing them off that. Tests can be a little challenging but Quizlet helps a lot
Never have been interested in art until taking classes with her. 3 tests all are an easy A if you use quizlet to study, essays on test dont have to be long just hit every point she wants, shell go over the questions in class and during reviews. Usually one paper which is very easy to write. Memorization is big but not bad if you put the time in
good overall, not hard to pass if you study and show up on test days. she only really grades off of three tests and a paper. she gives all the answers in class pretty much and spends a whole day reviewing for each test in class. i missed a test and had to write a rough 6-8 page paper to make up for it so trust me just go to exams - it's easier!
Mary Beth Alger such a caring teacher. Her classes are all lectures and it's clear she is passionate about what she's talking about. She gives a couple of tests with pretty clear grading criteria. Museum visit and paper is required but don't buy the book I never once even opened it.
Lectures are boring if your not interested in art but she is very passionate! She is very caring and understanding. She is willing to extend due dates if needed. Only 2 exams, 1 writing assignment and a 5 question quiz after every lecture. Lectures were recorded and posted on blackboard. Good choice to fulfill the art requirement
Prof Alger has been fantastic! She did synchronous classes once a week (optional attendance, helpful for people who work) with the other 2 prerecorded and posted online. The entire class is a 50 minute lecture, she's great with them and is very passionate. She's great at responding to emails if you need help. Quizzes are based on the lectures :)
I absolutely love Mary Beth! She is amazing; take anything she teachers. Art can be dry but she tries to make it fun and last semester she even did one lecture on the Basquiat collection at the MFA so it was cool to see something contemporary. I learned a lot about art and artists and it definitely got me interested in taking more ARTH courses
Sweetest woman! You can tell shes passionate about art and her job. Easy lectures 5 question mult choice quiz after every lecture. 2 tests & 1 paper but she literally gives the exact things you need during lectures for the tests & paper. I would take her over and over if i could! As an art history major, i appreciate her enthusiasm in every lecture
There's a daily multiple choice quiz of 5 questions. Show up, pay attention, and you'll do great. She's kind, fun, and both knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Tests are easy, all take-home, and you have plenty of time to do them. Great class.
Really nice professor, loves the courses she teaches, really excited to teach art. Super friendly and welcoming to any student.
Great professor who is passionate about what she teaches. Requires a museum visit and you have to write a paper on it for the course. Exams and quizzes are take home and have a lot of time to complete them.
I took the class for an Art requirement - didn't expect to get SO HOOKED. This lady is the BEST! She's kind, funny, and she tells you info that's on later quizzes! She makes everything fun! No required books either and she's always there to help you in case you're confused. Dude YOU GOTTA TAKE HER. She knows how to get the crowd laughing.
Professor Alger is a wonderful professor, I didn't expect to enjoy learning about art, but she found a way to make it enjoyable. You are graded by a 5 question multiple choice quiz every day. Notes are online, very easy. 2 online exams and one paper that requires a trip to a museum. understanding, passionate, and overall great professor.
Love Mary Beth! She is extremely passionate, kind, funny, and just a really great professor and person. Every lecture has an easy quiz attached to them, two exams, and then one museum visit paper. Overall the class is not difficult. Definitely worth taking her!
she is so nice to talk to, is very fashionable, gives super interesting lectures, and is clearly passionate about art history! very appreciative and considerate about art from other cultures, as well. you don't need to buy the textbook, save that money for the mandatory museum trip instead. she really cares about and respects her students.
She has a clear syllabus that lays everything out for the semester and describes the grading process exceptionally. There are five-question quizzes after each class that she releases onto Blackboard at around 5pm each day; they are super easy to finish and all the answers are in the slideshows on Blackboard. Overall very nice and understanding.
She was exactly what I expected an Art History professor to be. She really cared and while she loves class participation she wasn't pushy. There is a quiz posted after class but you have a whole week to do them, they were five questions and super easy. You are required to visit a museum and write an assignment about some pieces there.
Loved this class, super boring but great professor very easy. Just attend class and you'll get an A.
Her class was very straightforward: class time is for lectures, then a short quiz HW due the next week, with 2 tries each. Will listen to your thoughts even if it cuts into class time. Never lets class out late. You have to visit a art museum for one assignment. No surprises. I loved taking her class. One of best prof I've ever had.
She was nice. Her lectures were very heavy and sometimes hard to follow. She often rushed through her lectures.
Great professor who makes the subject engaging. Straightforward class structure with weekly quizzes, a museum trip, and manageable workload. Unstuck study was a big help for studying and test prep.
Super sweet, very passionate. I didn't pay much attention but I still picked up a few things. The exams are take home essays & SO boring, but she gives you maybe like a month. You also have to go to a museum but she gives the assignment at the start. Online quizzes after class were easy. She's a good choice. Manage your time well.
Take her!!! Easy A! Quiz after each class, but they are super easy. like 2 papers and a museum assignment which is you must physically visit a museum and write a paper on what you liked.
Lectures can sometimes be boring if you are not an art person but she it is clear she loves what she does! She is very considerate about assignments and gives you plenty of time to finish them. Only 2 exams, 1 project, and quiz after every lecture. Good class to take to complete arts requirement.
Mary Beth is a great professor. However, lectures are heavy and may seem boring. In terms of coursework, there are two exams and big project which is the ''Museum Assignment'' that involves visiting a museum. There are quizzes at the end of each class, 5 questions each and are pretty easy. I would recommend taking her if you need the credit.
So fashionable. I loved this class even though I am not a huge art history fan. Very lecture heavy, but she tries to make it as interesting as she can. You have class quizzes after every class, but they are super easy. There are three essays and one of them requires you to go to a museum.
The class is boring but she makes it better. She's super nice.
She's super sweet and I totally recommend her. For the online class you just listen to her lecture, then take a short quiz on what she covered, and that's basically it. It's really easy. She's passionate about art history, so if you want to actually learn it, she's a great choice.
