take for any economics class. excellent professor and easy.
course is challenging but prof is great!
If you want a more liberal approach to economics, take her!
She is the best of the best of the best stats teacher on the planet
Best stats teacher I've ever taken. She explains things so well that you don't even need the textbook, all you have to do is copy what she writes on the board. The only problem is that her grading is a bit harsh.
By far the best teacher i've had at FU. Very smart and helpful. Is concerned with each student Although her tests are tough she makes sure everyone's prepared. There is a review session for every quiz/test and a review sheet w/ last year's exam.
not a good class at all.
best class ever
this is the worst class ever. boring and doesn't seem to know what she's talking about at all.
Okay, she comes off really cool, and then you take the test--ouch! She is a tough grader, and sometimes she's not in a good mood when you go to her office. If you want help, be sure to READ UP on everything before going in.
one of the best teachers i've ever had. loved her! makes sure everyone understands material. tests were challenging, but you learn a lot. if you study you'll do well. makes stats interesting, which is very difficult to do. def take her. i got a lot out of the course
Yeah, she does want you to read up on the material--so what? She demands a lot from her students but she gives soo much of her time to help us learn! Def. take this class--you'll learn a lot even if it is hard.
wow, sounds like all the good recs are written by the teacher herself...because she really is not good. whether you read or not, she's not helpful when you go to office hours.
She's A1 in my book!
Choose the service learning option! Take this professor, reading may seem a bit much, but the few short papers are easy to complete. The tricky parts are the in-class exams. Just because they're open book does not mean that they are easy. Prepare for those the most. In sum, a pretty fair teacher.
Cutest teacher in the Econ department. She seems tough at first, but explains the material VERY well. You will most likely retain much of what you learn in her class. The readings are long, but interesting. Make sure you take notes on the readings..they will help when it comes to the midterm & final
what a dreg. A ton of material, papers, exams, tests, quizes etc total overload. pushes left wing political idology at the students with materials from liberal blowhards.
Had her for econometrics. Miserable, miserable, miserable. I know the class is automatically a bore, but she sure didn't go out of her way to help.
Difficult Tests and Prof Pushes a tired leftist spin on economics. Plays favorates
loved this class and learned a lot. Hard but good readings.
She plays favorites. Her final and midterm are impossible. She barely covers the material that was on the two tests. She grades papers incredibly unfairly. When she picks out who she likes and who she doesn't the class will either be hard or easy for you. DONT TAKE HER. spends way to much time drawing graphs and no time explaining them.
Loved econ and lit! The tests were hard, but fair. She really tries to help you learn the material and connect the stories to economic ideas.
She has no idea what she's doing; she can't answer anyone's questions and her reasoning for things changes everyday. The class was also very boring and it was obvious she got her whole class plan out of a book. She also plays favorites and strongly pushes an incredibly left agenda through her lectures.
thought this professor was fair and the readings were interesting.
Harsh Grader. Does not use text book. A lot of note taking. Plays favorites.
Liked this class and the connections made between econ, the real world, and literature. Fair teacher. Learned a lot.
Pretty boring class, doesnt really explain the material all that well. Uses a lot of graphs that she doesnt explain. Tests are hard because you barely know any of the material that are going to be on them because she barely teaches anything
Assigned a lot of random reading assignments. Exams are hard but manageable. Homework assignments help boost grade. Also if you show improvement, higher test scores will weigh more. Overall, interesting class and as long as you pay attention in class and understand the homework you will get a good grade.
She is a really nice lady and one of the best teacher in the department. A lot of note taking in the class, but there are almost no homework. Always very helpful. Cares the students and hopes they do well. As long as you read the book, take good notes, and do the practices in the book, you will be fine. Recommended.
Class was extremely boring. Did not learn much. She teaches SAS and code. On quizzes and exams, she is very picky about the wording of answers. She doesn't answer email and does not accept any emailed papers or submissions.
She genuinely cares about whether the students understand and learn the material.
Professor Combs is a great professor! She is very clear when teaching material and assigns optional HW that is very beneficial (same questions, different numbers on test!). Reading and outlining the book before class is very helpful to understanding material easily in class. Do the HW and practice multiple choice questions on the app to get an A.
She cares whether students learn the material and she connects the book to what is going on in the news. I learned alot.
She cares whether students learn. Tests on problems from class and problems assigned from book (different numbers). No calculators allwed on exams but math is easy.
Professor Combs is a very friendly and laid back professor, at least for this Service Learning course: Ethical Dimensions & Contemporary Social Problems. She has a very intense syllabus, but the class itself requires mainly attendance and discussion, which was actually fun and interesting- would definitely recommend for the Honors course.
Very clear, I was able to understand the concepts the first time she explained them. Tough grader on the exams, but practice problems did help. Would definitely take her for another course, I became more interested in Economics after taking this class
The average grade on our midterm was a 72. Took a ton of notes writing definitions. Rarely went over how to solve problems, which is on the test. The homework assigned is where you learned how to solve problems or work the graphs, but that means I mostly taught myself how to do it. Also, no calculators for the tests. She was nice though.
Learned alot about economics. Tests are tough, but she was always willing to help me when I went to her office hours for extra help with the problems. Would take again.
Dr. Combs is a very interactive professor. She has a genuine concern for her students and wants them to learn the material. She knows what students struggle with the most, what they need to get out of the class, and she engages the students in such a way that econometrics becomes an enjoyable subject!
Professor. Combs is really nice, her tests are manageable if you do the homeworks. She's very straightforward and most of the questions on the tests are exactly from the homework questions. Would take her again!
Professor Combs is a great teacher. Very nice lady, knowledgeable and passionate. She knows exactly what she is talking about and can field any question. Learned a whole lot in her class. Finished with a better understanding on the economy. Class defiantly requires a lot of independent work and effort to understand the complicated concepts.
She does a great job of including students in a conversation rather than a typical lecture. She taught very clearly, did not get sidetracked unless it was extremely relevant and interesting, and was a fair grader. She was very positive and enthusiastic, and she made herself available, even when inconvenient for her.
Mary Beth is fairly good at explaining the basic concepts. But she doesn't go through how to solve most types of problems, so you end up teaching yourself a lot. The class was really interesting, though, and Prof. Combs is the nicest woman on campus.
Awesome professor, I learned so much about the economy and did not dread class at all. Tough tests if you don't read and use the textbook as your aid. Smart, kind, funny woman.
She is a very sweet woman. She is very clear cut about what's on the tests and although the homework could be difficult, the tests, and especially the final were very easy. Do what she says and you will get an A
Prof Combs is great. I learned so much about macro and econ in general in her class. Tests are tough but if you do the homework and read the textbook you'll be fine. She's also really willing to work through things you don't understand if you go to her office hours. She's knowledgable and passionate. Would definitely recommend.
Prof Combs is great. I learned so much about macro and econ in general in her class. Tests are tough but if you do the homework and read the textbook you'll be fine. She's also really willing to work through things you don't understand if you go to her office hours. she's clear and knows what to focus on. Would definitely recommend.
Great class. Learned a lot about macro and about economic policy. She cares whether students learn about the economy.
She goes over each chapter in class. So if you do the readings, her lectures will only help to better understand the material. Textbook is online and you can also buy a hardcopy. Only homework is to answer 5-10 questions after reading each chapter. She writes everything down on the board. Great teacher and I would take her again.
Great professor, definitely cares about her students. Class is never just her reading from textbook, she always gives cool examples and does interactive activities. Homework not too bad, and tests can be tricky but if you study you should be fine. Take her!
Professor Combs is an amazing Macroeconomics professor. I learned so much during the class. While the information can sometimes be difficult to understand, the notes that she presented in class were very helpful for studying purposes. The tests and the homework are usually very straightforward.
The homework and review far exceed what you actually learn in class. Its hard. Wouldn't want to take again.
Professor Combs cares a lot about her students. Her lectures are interesting and engaging. She uses class experiments to make the material more accessible. Tests are not hard if you study from the homework and multiple choice practice. Very fair and clear professor. I hope I have the opportunity to take her again.
Professor Combs is the best! She makes her lectures as straight forward as possible, and does a recap of the previous class at the beginning of each class. The online book is very helpful to have, because the exams are straight from the homework assignments, online practice, and notes examples. Very clear, would definitely take her again.
Would not recommend. She's extremely hard and expects you to know an enormous amount of material for an introductory level class. Many students struggled to pass her class, I wouldn't take her again.
She cares whether students learn the material and she connects the book to what is going on in the news. I learned a great deal about macroeconomics and economic policy.
I took Prof. Combs for the honors class Ethical Dimensions, and even though I hate economics, she made this class fun and enjoyable! She's so kind and very funny, and she genuinely cares about students. She did assign 3 very long books (which I only skimmed), and the final essay was too long for the prompt, but as a whole, she's a great prof!
Took her class for Basic Macro, really good teacher and her exams are easy if you do the homework questions and pay attention in class. She also grades tests fairly easy and is super nice if you go to her during her office hours!!
Prof Combs is a great teacher. Her tests can be challenging, but if you do the homework and read the textbook you'll be fine. The test questions are similar to the homeworks. She's really willing to help you during her office hours. She's clear and knows what to focus on. Would definitely recommend.
prof combs is great. she made ethics and econ this class bearable by including very interesting topics! the debates are annoying to coordinate with groups but ended up being fun in class. a couple of essays, a written in class midterm, and the final is a midlength paper. do the readings and take notes in class and you'll be fine.
ANGEL. Truly cares about her students and intersectional education. Deeply cares about the Bronx community. I cannot stress this enough--she's an angel. 10/10
Really good teacher but a lot of content is covered throughout the semester which made the class fairly difficult. You have to work for a good grade but if you do do the work, the A is achievable.
Do not take this macro course. She is nice but not a great teacher. I emailed multiple times for office hours and got no response.
Tests are the repeating of the homework. Just be sure that you understand everything in the homework assignments and keep up to date with the readings(and you have to be fine). Overall, the material if quite tough but I think that prof.Combs does an amazing job at explaining it the easiest way possible.
She was so nice. Very lecture heavy sometimes it got boring. But it was okay
Prof. Combs is not the teacher you want for this class if you're brand new to the content. She constantly messed up her lectures and explain everything very vaguely with little depth into the subject. Nonetheless, her class is a free A if you just read the textbook and search up the content.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone new to Macro. Attendance is not mandatory and it got to one point in the semester where half the class would not show up because teaching yourself from the textbook she reads from, and bases her lectures on, would benefit you more than showing up to class, as it did me. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Very nice prof, but lecture-heavy and gets pretty boring. Requires you to wear masks still in her classes. Easy A if you work for it though.
She cares about whether students understand the material and is really helpful during office hours. We did experiments in class and she taught us about famous modern economists and how their research related to what we were learning. If you do the homework and practice the optional multiple choice, the quizzes are really straightforward.
I took the Bronx Explorations course with her, and I learned so much about Bronx history and culture. We visited the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Bronx Music Heritage Center, and the Bronx Historical Society. Great teacher who cares about her students and the Bronx.
She is a very proactive teacher, encouraging students to think beyond the classroom. However, the quizzes can be pretty unforgiving in the online grading format. If you are taking her course, be sure to know the online practice homework and multiple-choice questions on the back of your hand.
Prof Combs is very nice and her class was incredibly interesting. She is, though, a tough grader; an A was a 95. There were three group projects and a final individual project. Few people who got a 95 or higher on those projects. However, I still loved the course and got a lot out of it despite the grading and hundreds of pages of weekly reading.
She is a very understanding person and is extremely intelligent as well. However, her classes are lectured based and she talks really low which makes it very difficult to stay engaged. If you take the Bronx exploration class: 2 required trips which require a paper + a final paper. She assigns SOOOO much to read, and it tends to be very repetitive.
Overall, Professor Combs is a very nice teacher and definitely cares about her students. However, her tests are very difficult, and her lectures are very fast. She goes over so much material in class. Most kids did poorly on the tests due to their difficulty. She also does not curve. I would not take it again.
The class is very lecture-heavy and fast-paced, so expect your notebooks to fill up quickly. The professor doesn't wait for anyone and lectures until the end of class. Tests aren't too difficult but require memorizing a lot of material. Overall, it involves heavy studying, and you may need to teach yourself anything you miss during lectures.
Professor Combs is a very nice teacher and cares about her students. However, her tests are very difficult and extensive, and her lectures are very fast. She goes over so much material in class so quickly. Most kids did poorly on the tests due to their difficulty. She also does not curve. She might have an attitude at times. Would not take again.
This is a challenging course but she cares whether students understand the material. People did horrible on the first test & it was mainly bc no one was doing the homework on time or the extra practice. She talked to the class after the first exam and made adjustments based on feedback and she was always available for help during office hours.
She's a good professor and her work is manageable (she makes all homework due at the end of semester). If you go over the material and keep track of the homework, you'll do fine. Only thing is that she doesn't allow calculators on her exams but if you can do the math you'll be fine.
I took a 1 credit pass/fail class on the Bronx with her and have only good things to say! Super sweet, very knowledgeable about the Bronx, and overall no complaints in any way. 2 papers, 1 final paper, and a few excursions around the Bronx.
Way too difficult for an freshmen business class, esp. compared to other teachers. First test she gave had a D average in the class. Accessible during office hours and knowledgable, but she just grades way too harshly for a basic econ class. She does add bonus points to the grade for participation, which is awesome, but still would not recommend
Loved her! The class consists of meeting only 6 times in total for the semester with 3/4 papers assigned required. The required field trips were so so so fun and the participation felt a little unnecessary but I mean can't complain. Reading and participation is VERY VERY required.
Her classes are based around the lectures which are fairly traditional. She teaches the material being sure to use examples to help with understanding. Most of the class did poorly on the first exam (of three), and she did not really take accountability but did try to adapt the course.
Lectures were fast paced and were for the entirety of the class time which made it boring and also hard when trying to understand certain topics. She is a tough grader and to do well on tests you'd have to do some heavy studying by yourself. The only single good thing about this course with her was that attendance was not mandatory.
Professor Combs is an enthusiastic and energetic teacher who really cares about her students and helping them understand the concepts in ethics and econ. She uses a lot of different teaching methods to help keep the class interesting-experiments, debates, group discussions, and was understanding when I was sick and needed to make up missed work.
I really enjoyed being in Professor Combs' class. She really wants you to do well in the course, but it is really up to you how much effort you put in. Everyday she would give a lecture and it's important you take notes and do the homework HONESTLY (no ai, use ur notes) so you understand the material well. Go to office hours!!! and prepare to study
