Mary is a great professor, and I would go as far as to call her my friend. She is fun and helpful, although some aspects of the class were difficult. The quizzes are all content-based, and pretty hard, but she gives opportunities for EC.
She is one of the coolest teacher ever............
Very nice, funny, cool teacher! Lives up to date!! Class is easy if you do the work and follow directions..
She is really picky, but nice, good teacher, not an easy A, if your up for a chanellenge take her! :)
Mary is very particular with her grading. Also, we do almost the same thing in class every day: take a quiz on the short story, break into small groups and discuss, and then have a class discussion. Mary is a good prefessor, and you can get an A in this class by doing all the assignments and asking her questions. She is funny and very personable.
She really want's you to learn and be good at what you do! Hard work pays off and you'll easily be able to earn and A if you put time into it! Very humorous and the most helpful professor that I know!
I have never wanted to be done with a class more than this one. Very frustrating. You're "allowed" a number of absences, but you will miss out on assignments if you miss. She seems to think there is only one way to do things - her way. There is a lot of work, and she's a tough grader. Don't expect any response to email questions.
Very redundant class. Mary is very sarcastic and isn?t afraid to chastise or embarrass you in front of others. Mary grades extremely hard. You will have to write 2 papers and you will have to know how to write them before hand?Mary does not teach writing skills in her class. You will go a long way as long as you agree with her interpretations.
not a good teacher.
She is very clear about what che wants. Very nice teacher and not hard to understand her. Easy A as she gives you 2 oppertunities to do every paper except the last one. I liked her and thought she taught well.
Expected college quality, got less. Really didn't *teach* anything...just assigned essays and graded them with a rubric. She's clear about what she wants, but that's about all I can give her as far as compliments. Easy A, but had to wade through a lot of BS to get there.
I thought she was a decent teacher. Not the worst teacher I've ever had, yet not the best either. She seemed to be pretty helpful. Expect to do a fair amount of work. To me, the class didn't seem much harder than ones I've taken in high school. I suppose I'd recommend her, unless there's someone better.
Took online class. You'll have to know how to write well to begin with to get an easy A, otherwise, you'll learn now! I didn't feel like I was taught anything before reading her grades on my papers. If I already knew how to write well, I wouldn't have learned anything. She was very helpful, willing to meet, and answered emails and posts quickly.
I took this class online. There was a lot of work. It took me the first assignment to realize how she wanted things done. She is very clear in what she wants. There is no making up missed assignments. For every paper you get to submit a rough, final, and revised draft. She grades the final. You can either keep that grade, or make corrections to bet
I had Mary for a summer class. She is very helpful and friendly. Quick to return your messages and is very clear on what she wants in her assignments. I would take her for a class again.
I had Mary for English class. I never thought a teacher can be so mean and unhelpfull. She is never clear about the assignments and very picky. Her requirements for papers do not make any sense.I would strongly not reccomend anybody to take classes with her. Many students simply dropp her classes.
Yes she can be tuff BUT she is awesome!!! We go to college to LEARN right...that is what she wants you to do. College is not about just passing, you are taking classes for your career. Everything you learn with her will help with future classes. She will go out of her way to meet you for extra help. She makes the class fun! I HIGHLY recommend her!!
After the course was done, I realize how professional Mary was. We may complain about her, but what she does is just to instruct us and guide into the right path. She is an instructor that pushes you to learn, not just to seat on your butt occupying a seat. We goto college to learn from our instructors. The tougher the better.
I had her as a teacher and some of my classmates came in late and could take the reading quizzes until the last person finished. I came in a minute late because I wanted to print a paper for her and she said I couldn't take the quiz. The paper assignments were really hard for me also, since I'm not great at English classes.
If u are coming 2 Mary for an easy A , u better buckle up. She's lively and knows how to keep her students busy and working. Never come late or dare miss her class.Extremely picky n strick.I had 89.79%. She never gave me an A. I dont mind about that.I care about the quality of her class. I'm taking ENGL 1121 next sem with her. Just go 4 her folks.
took this class online. She was very helpful and willing to meet with students to do all she could to help. Her assignments are clear, but she is a tough grader, if you try hard in this class, and communicate with her, and take all opportunities to get a better grade you will succeed.
Mrs. B is by far my favorite professor from ARCC! No, she is not the easiest grader... But college is a place to learn, not a place to boost your self-esteem. It is not impossible to get a good grade if you're willing to work. She was always very willing to help students. Also, she made the class fun!
She is very HELPFUL. Most of her assigments were very clear and understandable execpt for the reseach paper she didnâ??t give enough time to finish it, more than half of the classrom was gone the day it was due. If you come a minute late to class she won't let you take the quiz and there is no making up missed assignments.
Mary says the class is not supposed to be fun.Almost all of the students have complained about her at one point or another. I have worked very hard in the class, and it just takes a lot out of you. I do not reccomend her. She is difficult, and very picky. I do get good grades, and i work hard in her class. Attendance is madatory, be on time!
best teacher by far, she mad class so much fun and i enjoyed her jokes! Shes very helpful and fun to have. Just do the work and what she says and then boom easy A.
I've taken Mary for two english classes so far and enjoyed both classes. She is a hard grader on the essays, but its well worth it. I learned a lot from both classes and she was always really helpful when needed.
mary is very sarcastic and a teacer that i dont feel comfortable coming to to ask for help, shes not afraid to be mean or call you out in class, she is a hard gader but clear on what she wants, be on time
I really enjoyed this class. I learned so much. She is very consistent with what she is looking for when she grades. I plan on taking more of her classes.
Mary is a GREAT teacher! YES, she is picky, but she tells you EXACTLY what she expects before hand. She is ALWAYS willing to help and you get to hand in a revised draft of all the papers after she grades it the first time around. Yes, she jokes around and is sarcastic, but class time flies by and you want to be her friend by the end of the class
I have no clue how she is in person, but taking the on-line class was difficult. The directions were unclear and confusing at times. I e-mailed her a question and never got an answer back. This was not worth taking on-line. She may be a better teacher in person and does not take any consideration its an on-line course.
she is clear on what she expects from you. confusing at times
She is a good teacher, very picky when grading but says exactly what she is expecting. She's a tough grader but gives good feedback if you ask for it. She gave reading quizzes which I didn't car for, the questions were a bit specific, reading is sort of random, and I'm still wondering why I had to know that the wedding was held in Pakastan (quiz Q)
Mary gives out a lot of assignments. Shes very sarcastic and I was always afraid to ask her for help. She wants perfection on the assignments she will not give you partial points. It's either her way or the highway. Mary is strict on attendance. Do not be late! You have to try your very hardest to pass this course or she will fail you.
It was a really fun class sometimes. you need to show up or you wont pass. tough grader. must do the reading in order to pass
Extremely strict grader. She wields a dry sense of humor and is very sarcastic, this made a lot of classmates, as well as myself, afraid to approach her for help. From time to time our class was confused as to her lessons and she didn't do much to help. However, I did enjoy this class despite the issues.
Mary is a great professor. The only people that complain about her are the ones that don't show up to class, don't read, and start their papers the week they are due. You do have to put a lot of effort into the class, but you will also get a lot out of it. She tries hard to make you a better student and is very helpful when you ask.
Reading is required for this class so expect to read a lot, along with writing papers. For papers, she will fully grade your second draft. you can either take that grade or improve the paper with the rubric she gives you. This is extremely helpful.
VERY, VERY, VERY bad. shes so strict and doesn't have any humor what so ever. she lets people down by mocking them. very sarcastic and definitely not helpful
She grades tough, but she is more than willing to help if needed and she gives clear feedback.
I took her online class, and never ever again, very tough grader, i met her to discuss my grade, and i felt very uncomfortable speaking to her, she left me not comfortable with the class. i read the rates when i registered and believed the ones that said "just do your work and youll be good". i have good grades usually. DONT TAKE.
Even if you're in need of credits, do not take this class! Especially if you are an in-class type of learner. She is a harsh grader and her online final exams are not timed well and are poorly instructed. Have fun with this class!
She is a great teacher. You have to read but it's not a lot. She grades hard on papers, but if pay attention to what she says you will do good!
Online, children's lit. Very hard. Lots of discussions and you can't just do the min of what she says. Hard with papers. Thought this would be easy. Not.
She has great humor and provides a good amount of feedback on essays. Attendance is required though, and your grade will drop the more you miss class.
Easiest English class I have ever taken. She gives clear expectations, She responds quickly to emails and has good office hours. She is super funny and entertaining. Genuinely wants to see you succeed.
I would say she is a tough grader, but that would imply that she is fair. Her grading is arbitrary and strict when the class is a literature class with less than strict answers. I had fun during the discussions and found that the harder I tried the more fails she gave me. In the end only word count matters, not original ideas. She values sheep.
Have fun doing papers, super tough grader and unless your paper is perfect she will always find errors on your paper. Very strict and most of the times not really nice. Will not boost your grade if you're within 1% on the next letter grade. Do not recommend this teacher to anyone.
I LOVED Mary!!! She was super hilarious and made class fun and easy to follow! Her grading makes sense and she graded my papers very well. Obviously if you arent good at writing papers, you wont do well regardless. But she taught very well and very easy to understand. Would take again!
I was excited to take this class when I began, as a typically enjoy English classes. However, this class was dreadful. She is a very tough grader. Her unclear grading criteria makes it so you'll think you exceeded the requirements, but you'll still get a horrible grade. She will sometimes give no feedback as to why you got the grade you did.
Mary is a phenomenal teacher! She made the class fun and interesting and helped me improve my writing. Make sure to leave your phone in your bag! Weekly reading quizzes but they are easy if you actually read the articles. You also get a third draft on all the big papers, I think there were 3. Only get a few absences and she takes them seriously!
Mary's class was awesome. I learned a lot from her and she was very helpful when we had to switch to online learning with all of the COVID-19 stuff going on. If you take the time to reach out to her she will make it her priority to help you!! She is a fantastic professor.
Her instructions for papers were very unclear. She's the only English teacher I had that didn't do rough drafts. I had to beg her to read my rough drafts but her feedback was very general, such as "needs more development." She would also only read half of the papers.
Do not recommend
10/10! Mary is organized and controls online utilities wonderfully. She helps students so that they don't miss due dates or assignments. She is a tough grader but I truly appreciate this because it has allowed me to significantly enhance my writing skills. There are weekly quizzes, readings, and papers, so this course requires a lot of time!
she was the best professor/teacher i have ever had. I'm pretty bad at papers and she was so much help for every step of the process for the 3 papers that made up the majority of your grade in this class. she also gave amazing feedback and allowed and encouraged 2nd and 3rd drafts on papers. I wish I could have her for every class
Definitely a thorough grader. Taking online was nice. No lectures, no textbooks. Weekly read through of a few short stories, discussion board, quiz and some weeks a reflection paper. A couple big essays. Gives lots of great writing and citing resources. GREAT written feedback on everything. Class was extremely organized and consistent each week.
Although a very good teacher, this class was very difficult. Lots of reads, and very tough graded discussion posts. If you are not an "above average" reader/writer, I would suggest taking an easier course.
Overall she grades people horribly and does not explain what you did wrong on your essays. Also makes you write 6-8 page essays with an annotated bibliography. She's nice but her class is horrible
I had taken the class knowing that it would be rough and that I would have to work for a good grade. After the first writing prompt that was assigned the opening week, I realized it would be way more demanding than expected. She doesnt follow her grading criteria and isnt flexible when personal issues pop up. She rarely gives a perfect score.
Way too hard of a grader never gives even decent scores, even when perfectly following every instruction. Is very unclear and had too high of expectations. Lots of reading. 1 Discussion, 3 replies, 1 quiz she gives 2 questions per min (sometimes more) for small details in long books and are impossible to find in 30 sec. First essay was ridiculous
Boldelson is a very harsh grader. It is near impossible to get a perfect score on anything. The tests are timed and you have to rush through in order to complete them. The essays were awful because she would never give a decent score and would dock way more points than necessary. Overall, she seemed nice, but she is way too harsh on grading.
Arbitrary, extremely strict deadlines, when I reached out about assignments she offered no solution other than to get an app to remind me about deadlines.
If you want to do well in her class, give feedback!! Ask questions in or outside of class time. She will respond quickly, even on weekends. She gives good feedback and wants you to succeed. Mary also offers 3rd drafts that help improve your grade. There are 2-4 short readings a week and weekly quizzes. Overall I enjoyed her class!
I came into the class thinking it'd be a breeze because of the kids' books, but I had to work for this class. The quizzes had small details in them. They weren't overly hard, but I didn't look forward to them. If you can, get eBooks instead of paperbacks. Internet Archive is good. She was a harsh grader but replies fast, seems nice, and is helpful.
Ok course! Professor is a very strict grader, but as long as you read the rubric and follow it closely you'll be ok. Deadlines are also very strict, she is not very lenient but she does post all resources so you can always work ahead. She is a polite person though and helpful individually so don't be afraid to ask questions. Workload was average.
She said on the first day of class that she was there to help, and yet when I seemed to need it she made no effort to actually find a solution to my issue.
For an intro writing course, I think she's a terrible professor. Very unclear grading guidelines, emphasizes the use of sample papers for reference, but when you do, she only has bad things to say. Doesn't answer questions clearly. When it comes to essays, you're going in completely blind. Doesn't seem like she wants students to succeed. At all!
This teacher offers little to no help, extremely tough grader, and gives little feedback on assignments.
Horrible teacher. Would never take again, VERY strict grader with no good reasoning on why. never gave full percent. very optionin based grading.
She's very difficult. I honestly don't know what she looks for in each assignment. Unclear in her feedback and expectations. I generally get straight A's, but I couldn't even earn a perfect score on any assignment. It was hard to pursue the class after the first week or two, once you realize she is a harsh grader. I would not recommend her at all.
Mary is a personality for sure, and her grading is very strict, but the feedback and time that she gives on papers and assignments will guarantee a passing grade, in my opinion.
She is very picky.
Very tuff grader, I did work once off a rubric she offered and got a lot of inspiration from an example and she gave me a low score and told me to look at the rubric and the example and when we met to talk about it then she realized that it was good, gave terrible feedback
This class has a big work load but I highly recommend you work with her 1:1 before submitting papers. She will give you clear feedback and help you develop your paper to her standards. She is a very nice person and teacher.
DO NOT TAKE! You'd think following example papers and rubrics would lead to success...you end up getting a terrible grade no matter what. She is very opinionated when grading and her famous feedback statement, "Needs more development" gets you nowhere. Extremely unhelpful and vague with ALL feedback. I used to love writing until I took this class.
Second class I've had with her and still enjoyed it! It was online asynch., and every week we had one kid's book to read, a quiz, and a discussion post (1 OG and 3 responses). Grading can be a bit harsh, so following her criteria is key! Two papers, each worth 25% of your total grade. She's willing to give feedback on papers before the due date!
While Prof. Bodelson is a tough grader, she sets very clear expectations and is willing to meet with students during her office hours to go over areas you can improve. Each week was some reading, a discussion post & responses, and a quiz. There are three practice papers and three essays. She gives great feedback and allows for revisions!
This was the first class I've taken with Bodelson, and I loved it! We had a discussion post every week, a weekly reading quiz, and only a few papers that she gives plenty of time for. She gives a lot of great advice in-class on assignments and is clear/strict on grading but offers third drafts on essays. Already taking another class with her!
This professor is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She is not understanding with personal issues, and doesn't give second chances unless you are the luckiest person in the world. Her quizzes are worth only 5 points so it doesn't even matter if you get a perfect score on it your grade won't even go up by a single percent.
I took her College Reading and writing class. Instructions weren't always clear. I took her PSEO my Junior Year, tough grader.
I am a straight A student and always have been. I welcome a challenge and enjoy learning! This individual has killed my passion completely. Her instructions are not clear and she is extremely picky. Even when you follow the criteria she somehow some way magically pulls something negative to say from thin air. Save your money, pick another teacher.
Is great, super nice and easy going
IF YOU ARE READING DON'T TAKE. This professor single handedly lose all hope in school. I was a straight A student all my life and her class ruined that. She has 0 grace, don't even think about extra credit. She is the hardest grader ever, no matter how good you followed the rubric it will never be enough. I think she likes to see students fail.
Overly harsh on grading for an elective level class, told the class so many times "I am a very strict grader" and grades on if she agrees with what you wrote or not. So many discussion posts. Most of the readings we were supposed to analyze felt like they were picked based on political and moral subjects instead of writing quality.
Mary is a very bad proffesor. Absolutely no exceptions on late work, even if a close family member passes away. No sympathy at all. Very harsh grader. The only thing she has going for her is that you can make edits to an essay after you turn it in, so basically a 3rd draft. She was very bad at explaining things and telling people when stuff is due.
She teaches the class like its a high school classroom. If she catches you on your phone for even 5 seconds, shell completely stop the lecture and whine about how "distracting" it is for the class. She's also a very harsh grader and doesn't have any remorse for students when it comes to grading. Take her as a last option.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. You will have a post or paper based solely on opinion, and if she doesn't agree, she will fail you for it. Says directions are one way, then grades you on another. Rude, takes the class way too seriously - It's a SHORT STORIES CLASS. CALM DOWN. Have all A's and B's, and this chick is giving me a D+
Actually run. Do not take her class, please find someone else. If you thought you did well in english, so did I.
