She is teaching the class like every one in there is going to be an English major or trying to writed a novel. She gives way too much assignments and thinks that students have all the time in the world. IF you make it with a C other class writings are

She is a very haed teacher, she gave too much homework and graded very haed. You are lucky if you pass with a C
This was not the easiest class, she made you work. This is a Freshman course, though, and many students didn't expect to put in the effort. I made an A without studying 24/7, I just did the work assigned. She's an excellent teacher!
i am taking comp2 with her and it is not an easy class but if you do your work you should pass it easily with at least a B she gives you the opportunity to revise a lot of your work
This lady is the devil. Figure her out early on because if writeing a pursuasive paper and your oppinions dont coinside with hers then you are doomed! Never take her for a 2 week intersession, its like a vacation in HELL!

She is a very hard teacher. Don't take a condensed class. She won't like it if you work a job while taking her class. Learn her style early--and comply--because she won't learn yours. It's her way or a low grade.
The love Ms. Cantrel has for her subject was evident from the first day of class. She is a fair teacher but she is one who will place large demands on a students time. All Comp I skills need to be fresh at the beginning of this class or a student can expect a huge struggle to pass.
Her assignments were fair and fun. She explained things clearly and effectivly. Good sense of humor and easy to get alot with. There is alot of reading invovled but it is easy reading.
Kiss your social life goodbye if you take Cantrell's class. Homework will spew from your ears. She's a great teacher though. You'll walk away with a lot of knowledge. My writing abilities and style have improved dramatically, making papers for other classes a breeze.
dont take comp 1 or 2 with cantrell, she is a perfectionist (whether she admits it or not). she is a total hypocrite, she expects everyone to never make mistakes. if u get cantrell as your teacher, please feel free to switch, otherwise u will end up with 1 semester with satan as your guide.
she is very interested in making her students learn. Lots of summaries and essays but no tests. She seems over whelming at first but if you do the work at the end of the semester you will be proud of yourself.
Mary is a great teacher: one who cultivates excellence in her students. Poetry is a fun class--but that doesn't mean slacking off is an option. The point of learning is to challenge yourself, and Mary provides ample opportunity and tools. She's intelligent, respectful, and a good person, too.
i thought i was in hell at first but saw a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. my grade was ever improving but with a lot of effort. you do your work and all will be cool.
She is PASSIONATE about good writing. I'm not as nice as her, but I wish was more honest about bad writing. After all, you often learn what to do by learning what not to do. Most classes are workshops, where the class critiques your poems. You'll learn what you choose to take. She's a doll.
What a great teacher! This class was was a lot of work, but well worth it. What I learned helps tremendously with other classes that require writing. Her critiques were extremely helpful and she makes clear what she expects from you from day one. She was very professional and friendly. The only way to not do well in her class is to just not try.
Oh man, this teacher is really passionate about her perfect writing, but if you do not do exactly what she wants, then your grade can suffer. then sheEssays suck and are not very interesting. If you enjoy teachers WAY too much, then she's for you. If you like the statement "C's equals degrees" then take Cantrel.
Mary is amazing. She offers suggestions, comments, exercises to help you understand. Her class definitely involves hard work, but is well worth your time b/c she really knows her stuff.
she's incredible boring and gives you a story to read every night pratically and you have to write a summary about each one. plus quizzes everyday. It sucks!
I love her
At one point in the semester no one had a A. If you feel like doing a lot of writing for a C, then sign up. I found her rather rude to some students in class and the assignments were boring. I'm lucky that I passed the class.

She is nice, but she bores you with lectures and sometimes you will be unsure exactly what she wants you to do in your paper.
I hated her class!!! I felt like I wrote and wrote and wrote and NEVER made better than a low B or a C!! I was never sure about what she wanted exactly--and if your paper wasn't what she wanted--you wouldn't get a good grade! But she never did a good job explaining ANYTHING. I would not recommend her to ANYONE.
WORST teacher of my college career! I'm a good writer and I've never made below an A in an english class before, but it's impossible to get above a B- in her class. She's extremely difficult and she never explains what's expected. There's a ton of writing: 4 HUGE essays, 10 reading responses, 1 final, and a TON of unneccessary work. You have been
there needs to be more class time because we always have something due but we never have class
She expects a great deal from her students and if an individual is willing to put forth the effort they will learn a great deal from her. However, if you are incapable of thinking as an adult and and accepting criticism that IS useful YOU will remain ignorant of English. Utilize her knowledge and you may be thought of as more than a Okie.
Excellent teacher and person
Easy to earn A's (with hard work) in all assignments, except the Essays.
Excellent Professor. I recommend Professor Cantrel's class as a first class in college. Just do the work and you'll do fine.
Online Summer 8wk Course -> Great class for gen-ed requirement! You will have to actually do the work to get a good grade! Prof grades promptly and even faster at returning emailed questions. There are extra credit assignments in case you don't complete one or two of the minor assignments, but the essays are important.
Although the course is very difficult, Mrs. Cantrell is very helpful. Blended (1/3 online) class is great. Not enough class meetings, though.
A pretty good class, but not too easy. If you don't have very much time on your hands, I recommend you wait until you do to take Composition One. Six discussion forums, six summaries, three essays, and a final. I thought it was pretty easy to earn an A on the essays. Good Extra Credit opportunities. A great professor, too!
Professor Cantrell is a great teacher, if you don't learn the material presented in her class, it's your own fault. She is very attentive to her students and answers e-mails quickly. Whatever grade you recieve is the grade you've earned! She does NOT give fluffy grades! She would hate that I am using second person!! (DON'T use second person!!!)
I am glad I chose her for Comp 1. She genuinely wants her students to learn and is very helpful and attentive.
Very professional.. Difficult
I took her CompII class as an 8week course. It was very challenging, but if you atleast put forth effort and turn everything in, she lets you revise every assignment. She is very nice and holds high expectations for her students. I would recommend her class.
SHE IS A GOOD PROFESSOR WILLING TO HELP. GIVES YOU EXTRA TIME AND ATTENTION IF YOU NEED IT. SHE IS NICE, BUT IF YOU ARE ESL DON'T TAKE THE FAST RACK CLASS.
SHE IS NICE AND VERY HELPFUL. DON'T TAKE HER FAST TRACK CLASS IF YOU ARE AN ESL STUDENT.
LAZY PEOPLE this is not the class for you!!!Miss Cantrell is the BEST teacher. She is not there to baby you.You need to work and learn.I thought i could write at first but i did not.She taught me how to write and i am good at it now.She always gets back to you and is always willing to help.If you want to learn and be really good, she is the BEST!!!!
I think Mrs. Cantrell is a good teacher.
Very good professor... Intimidating at first but really works with you and understands.
I'm a 4.0 student who passed the AP Test but i received a B in this class. I did all the work necessary, spent 24 hours on revisions and went to the tutor at TCC. She graded way too hard and expected every one to be an amazing writer. I truly feel my grades were not consistent with the essays i wrote. DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER OR A COMP CLASS AT TCC!
I had her Comp I and I heard from everyone that has taken Comp I that they had alot easier teachers. She's not horrible but if you're not willing to do alotttt of work, do NOT take her.
I found this class to be a good way to knock out Comp 2. Ms. Cantrell kept the class lively and interesting, and made the three weeks of class fly by.
I took Comp 1 from her online. If you read the syllabus and stay on top of the work you can pass the class without issue. She is very helpful if any issues arise, but seems to have problems using Blackboard for her online courses. Even as someone that hates writing, I did not struggle with her class.
Professor Cantrell is an awesome teacher! Fast to respond to email, encouraging, great feedback on work. If you want to LEARN in Comp I, take her class!
Nice and helpful lady but very difficult course. I wouldn't have passed if I had not taken Writing 2 with it. Quite a few students dropped. Lots of writing, strict grader. The whole course was over educational reform so that got pretty boring. You miss a lot if you're absent. Used Little Brown almost weekly, quiz almost daily.
Whatever you do, DO NOT write a persuasive paper that differs from her opinion. You will be graded on your point of view rather than the content of your paper. Expects everyone to share her political/social views and if you don't, your grade will suffer. Caveat emptor pal.
Professor Cantrell provides extra credit quizzes and assignments at the end of the semester that do nothing but boost grades. Also, after students learn her grading style, it becomes very easy to receive A's on essays/summaries. Though the workload is heavy, I did not find it over the top. I still completed all the assignments and all the readings.
Professor Cantrell is an incredible instructor. Although the work load is not light, this class will be very beneficial no matter your degree. To do well in class, you will have to work! Cantrell is very helpful and quickly responds to any emails. Cantrell's love for english and honest desire to help her students improve makes this class enjoyable.
She is difficult but clear un learning.
There was a lot of work. More work with Composition I than with Composition II, but she was always clear with what she wanted. As long as you pay attention, and put forth effort you can excel in the class.
Good teacher with a heavy workload be prepared to clear out your weekends for her class. It's better not to procrastinate in her class but she is a kind and understanding lady who knows what she is talking about, Uses Little brown incessantly and expects students to refer to it a lot. Overall a nice lady with a rigorous workload.
Cantrell is the toughest professor with no lee way whatsoever. If you don't comply with her guidelines exactly you will fail. Class participation is mandatory, with heavy work load. Her teaching style is narrow and boring. She always gives long lectures about the readings. Her bonus points don't do much. She doesn't like individual style in essays.
Do NOT TAKE HER CLASS
NOT a good professor...
She doesn't give you anything without giving you the tools first. This was not an easy course and she is very tough, BUT, I feel completely prepared for Comp 2. She gives extra credit and the ability to revise your papers. There is really no reason to fail her class.
Very nice and helpful. Her theme is politics and media. Very difficult articles to read and write about. I should have waited until Fall for the 16-week course. BIG MISTAKE for me;this was my first college course & I had been out of school for 10 years. I dropped the course in fear of failing and re-enrolled for the Fall semester.
Professor Cantrel demands the best out of you and is always there to help. Alot of reading outside of class. Class participation is a must. The pop quizzes and vocabulary exams are easy if you do the homework and study.
She does not clearly explain what the assignments are and even has admitted to the lack of clarity but will not fix her mistakes ultimately punish the student for her actions.
Not helpful, does not follow her own grading rubric, and provides little to no clarity as to why she gave a certain grade.
Do not take this class if you want to receive a just grade. She will give low marks on papers with little to no reason for the cause of such a low grade. Even after using the writing center I received C's on my work.
If you cannot figure out her style preference you will not pass the class.
Mrs Cantrell doesn't provide any specifics as to exactly what she wants out of your writing. Doesn't fairly follow her own grading rubrics, and is WAY too into politics and media. Can't figure out her teaching style. Very hard to please, and not very helpful. RUN. RUN the other way if you don't like politics. Good luck.
I took Professor Cantrells Comp I and II during my senior year in high school, and she taught me more than Ive learned in all my other English classes combined. Yes, you do have to work, but she goes above and beyond to help everyone pass with the best grade possible. Dont take her if your not interested in really learning to write well!!!!
I learned alot from this class! Those who say she is hard must have never had a college class. Her instructions are very clear, and she is always available to help. If you just put in a very little bit of effort, you will get an A.
I took Prof. Cantrell's Comp I on line and learned a lot. She explains things so they are easy to understand and I got good feedback from her. I liked her class.
Mrs Cantrell is a awesome teacher! I was really scared taking an on line class for the first time but her class helped me be successful. I left the class feeling very prepared for comp 2.
Very difficult instructor, requires you to follow rules precisely, took 4 week online class, was very busy, got back to emails fairly quickly gave good feedback, but graded really hard on all work given. An assignment was due every day between mon-thurs.
She is a very tough teacher especially when taking her as a concurrent teacher. She doesn't give much feedback unless you ask for it. She likes when you ask lots of questions. Gives you one essay to rewrite at the end to try and improve your grade and an extra summary; I highly suggest doing them. Lots of work in the middle of the semester.
Professor Cantrell is truly an amazing professor. Her Short Story Writing class was definitely heavy on reading and DBs, but do the work and it's an easily accessible "A." However, if you are not good at writing stories naturally, this class is not meant for you.
This professor assigned two to three readings for homework each class period. We would take a quiz over the readings at the beginning of class. No one received an A in my class on our essays. This was not due to bad writing but bad direction. This course was confusing when it came to essays and tests. We had to define plot in 200 words on our test.
If you really want to see what you can do take her class! She will make you work but you won't regret it.
Has a pretty bad attitude sometimes. Other times she's chill. Very harsh grader. Sometimes I would question her abilities because she is not very good at spelling. Multiple papers. Boring topics.
I had her for Comp I & II. Assigns a lot of readings. There are a lot of papers. (7-10 pages) She can be rude sometimes if she doesn't feel you're trying hard enough, even if you're doing your best. Definitely need to go to class or she will have you withdrawn. Topics for each course were very boring and were very unenjoyable.
She get's back to you fast, but her feedback on papers is lacking. Can pass if you're a slacker BUT beware of some topic quizzes. Overall she made Comp 1&2 pretty easy.
I had to write three essays for her comp 2 class and an essay for the final. She is a hard grader on her papers but the discussions and other 10 point assignments were easy 100's. Sometimes her instructions did not always make sense and she was not always quick to answer my emails when I needed help.
I took Professor Cantrell's class online as a concurrent student. She makes you work hard but I am beyond grateful that I took her class. She is super understanding and gets back to your emails quickly. Shes always available at her office most days if you ever need to talk with her. You will learn so much more than any professor at TCC guaranteed.
High school English is nothing like Comp. Don't procrastinate, do the work, and always be on time. Tough on grading. Rambles on side stories that are useless to assignments. Take notes... on everything.
If you thought you were a great writer, think again. Professor Cantrell pushed my writing abilities past their limit. If you can't take criticism well, or pay attention to small details in your writing, you're going to have a tough time. Time management and attendance are absolutely key to succeeding in this class.
Comp 2, 8 week online course. Have to put in the work for sure in this course & she does expect a lot from her students. Spent a good amount of time in this class but she gives (little) extra credit & gives leeway to those who show effort. Replies to emails fast. Will set a time to talk if need be. Sometimes emails are unclear. No final, no quizzes
Professor Cantrell was always available and more than willing to answer any questions I had, either in person or through email. Although it may seem like a daunting course, as long as you manage your time properly and take advantage of her feedback on previous assignments, youll pass easily!
Professor Cantrell is a very HARD professor and is the toughest grader I have ever had. For the first several weeks every night, you have 2-3 articles to read and they are really boring. She also spends way too much time talking and repeating herself to the point where she doesn't give enough time for other things or questions.
Professor Cantrell was not an easy class at all. She gives a lot of articles to read and some can be very long and boring. She's very kind and is always happy to help you if you ask. She gives great feedback! This class requires a lot of time and effort outside of class but you can get an A if you work hard for it.
This class is a heavy work load. In the beginning you have 2 discussion boards each week and you have to reply to 4 peers using quotes in your original reply and reply to your peers. Then you have to write a 10-20 page short story and 4 weeks in you begin critiquing the other students. 4 stories per week. Its a huge work load. 600 pt paper due.
Literally the hardest class I have ever taken and I'm only halfway through it. Every time I enter her class I feel so depressed because of how bad it is.
I took her for Novel Writing. You had to write your first chapter of the book you dream about writing. She gives good feedback and responds in a timely manner. She is definitely very positive and open-minded and willing to read anything before you submit it. Be sure to participate and give it your all to get a good grade.
Professor Cantrell is an excellent professor, even though her class is difficult. There is six summaries, three essays, and a midterm exam. However, there is no final exam and there are opportunities to revise essays and receive extra credit at the end of the semester. If you don't want to put in your best effort, don't take this class!
Appears reasonable, but can be unpredictable. Responsive, but not always with clear answers. Opportunity to revise work & get extra credit. Course well organized, but assigned reading has strong left-leaning bias. Inconsistent grader; IF you stumble onto what she wants, you'll get a good grade. If not, even a well written paper gets hammered.
If you don't have good time management skills, do not take this class. Professor Cantrell makes you work for your grade with multiple hours of homework a week. She's available for feedback outside of class, though her feedback can be confusing and vague a lot of the time. She is a tough grader and will dock points if she disagrees with you.
My second course with Prof C, and I like this one more. The course was well organized and definitely makes you work. She can be a tough grader, but effort, engagement, and improvement do count with her. If you put in the work, she does care about your progress and will treat you fairly. Take advantage of every bit of offered extra credit!
Professor Cantrell was a very good Professor. Although her grading was tough, I feel as though it made me become a better writer. If you arent willing to work for your grade, do not take this class. However, if you want to learn and become a better writer, this is the class for you.
She was communicative and helpful. It was summer course so all the work was condensed as usual, but it wasn't more than I personally could handle. It was a thought-provoking class and I enjoyed reading the Holocaust book she assigned to us. Highly recommend.
Professor Cantrell is an overall great teacher! She is willing to give feedback, she is clear and concise with grading. One thing is, although she has an amazing grace period for essays, summaries, and such, don't procrastinate!
Professor Cantrel is an amazing professor, she is always willing to give feedback, she engages her students in lectures, and she is very caring for her students. Although she does give a grace period of 48 hours to turn in essays, summaries, and such after the due date, it is important NOT to procrastinate, and get ready to read a lot.
I'm currently taking her Comp I class and I really love it. I'm not the best writer at all but she really does want to help you if you try. There is a lot of workloads, typically the same schedule of work every week. She is extremely generous with her grace periods on large assignments like essays and summaries plus extra credit. Def use that.
Like a lot of other reviewers I was inspired by Professor Cantrells class. She gives everyone the opportunity to succeed and is willing to go the extra mile to help you get there. She is a dedicated professional. I am a better writer, and a better student, because of her class.
Professor Cantrell was a very harsh and tough grader. She also had students write about a very controversial topic right now and if your opinion didnt line up with hers then you did not get a good grade. She had about 3 things to turn in a week but that got really tough when one was a paper. Overall I would not take her class again.
Yes, her class is difficult, but it's college and I expect that. My writing is so much better because of her. If you want to do well in college, you have to learn to write, so you should take this class.
Professor Cantrell comes across very harsh in the beginning of the semester demanding time to be taken out of ones schedule. Throughout the semester finding time for the assignments becomes easier, teaching good time management while improving my writing.
Professor Cantrell was great! Prof. Cantrell gives wonderful feedback and is really invested in helping her students to develop their craft. That said, be prepared for a lot of reading and a lot of writing! There's a lot crammed into this class, but if you keep up with the work it is totally worth it!
This class was by far one of the hardest classes I have taken! She grades super tough (3 points were taken from a paper for an extra space between words). Make sure you triple check your papers for mistakes. There are a lot of readings that you have to read! Make sure you don't get on her bad side your grade will reflect it. DON'T MISS CLASS!!!
Mary Cantrell is the singlemost insipid, boring, petty, and (Dare I say insane?) community college professor in the history of instruction. The constant micromanaging, hovering, and insecure (not to mention overbearing) sensitivity to peer pressure from students was suffocating. They hired a young female prof years ago, but Mary Cantrell ate her.
Although Mary gave me helpful feedback, I cannot write without breaking down anymore. Her criticisms felt like attacks instead of a helpful push and made me reconsider if I was good enough to write. You should read everything twice and participate fully, but I suggest putting up a barrier so you won't get your feelings hurt.
Extremely rude! She said she is better than any other professor in campus since she has been here longer and gets paid very well. So irrelevant right. She also assigns papers back to back 10 pages + and doesn't not give enough time to completed. Instead of helping you she judges your writing and automatically ask who the previous teacher was.
Great professor, many reviews say she is a harsh and a bad teacher. This is not true! She gives great feedback and very fair grading. There is also many extra credit opportunities. There is also so much time between the little assignments to understand and get each assignment done. Easy class to get an A or B if you do the work.
I believe that Professor Cantrell's class was great. Although many think that she grades very harshly, I think she grades fairly and gives great feedback on essays. There is plenty of extra credit that is given out and can be very helpful to bring someone's grade up. I think anyone who does their work in this class will at least receive an A or B.
Professor Cantrell was an amazing professor. She was my first professor as a highschool/college student and she has set the bar high. The difficulty of the class did give me a bit of a workload at times, but it was manageable. The teaching style was consistent and let me grasp the material we were being presented. I'm going to miss her class!
Professor Cantrell was a tough one. Very hard grading and TONS of summaries. She is a nice person, but a tough professor. I would choose a different professor next time.
I would not recommend her.
Such a hard class, graded with an iron fist, don't be surprised to get a C or D on an assignment with small errors.
she honestly is a hard teacher to have. get ready for homework that lasts for hours.
Mary Cantrell gives a lot of feedback, and lets you revise your essays, but can be very mean to students in her feedback and Class.
You have to really pay attention in her class. Be ready to see a low grade on written assignments for just minor errors. At the end of the semester, she will let you revise essays instead of a final. Really, really difficult class. Lots of discussion boards. It is definitely a "teach yourself" kind of class.
She made me hate English and lose all my love for it. She's mean and brutal
Used TCC writing lab and a TCC professor as tutor to review my papers and still received a C grade. This professor is not consistent with other professors on grading.
I am having her as an online professor this current semester. Sure, she gives harsh feedback, but it is in no way rude or mean and she genuinely wants her students to improve their writing skills. Stressful course, but feedback is very detailed and helps you know what you need to improve.
It felt like she was out to get me. It seemed that nothing I wrote was good enough. She grades very harshly. My high school AP classes did not prepare me for this class at all. Find another professor.
Her class can be difficult, but dont believe the other ratings here;.
I had prof. Cantrell for Comp 1 and she is not the worst but def a very tough grader and I feel like sometimes can come off as rude and judgy during the feedback, which made writing papers very dreadful. I do not think I would take her again but I did learn a few things from her class.
Tough but rewarding class with detailed feedback. unstuckstudy and study sessions were crucial for staying on top of the work. Worth the effort for improving writing skills.
DONT TAKE HER CLASS!! I warned you She is a tough grader she literally gives me 0/15 and 0/40 on almost all of my assignments and 100/200 on essays, I followed the instructions and everything she will never let you redo her assignments. She literally told me if I don't meet with her to discuss my grade she will withdraw me!
She is so confusing, some essays I wrote under an hour were high As and some were given low Cs even though I had listened to and followed all the feedback, got paper peer reviewed and edited by another professor and teacher, as well as 2 classmates. Aslo I was on medical leave, and she threatened to drop me because I missed a 10 point assignment.
I enjoyed Professor Cantrell's Comp 1 class! It was very challenging, but Cantrell was amazing about responding to questions and left detailed feedback on almost all assignments. She's a tough grader, but if you put in genuine effort on your assignments, you will earn good grades. I learned a lot from this class and strengthened my writing skills.
In my opinion, she would be a good teacher if the mandatory participation assignments and lectures were not useless. I feel like the assignments were difficult to complete and would tank your participation grade easily while having no real benefit to the class. It would be more effective to teach the text book and give us more dedicated essay time.
