Very hard grader, never shares your progress with you.
You never quite understand what she wants from you. One minute its to broad the next to narrow.
Very VERY tough grader. Also does not keep you informed of your progress. Expects you to keep track of your own progress, even though you dont get all of the information.
Nice lady. Grammer intensive.
Great professor! Sure she is a tough grader, but in the long run this will pay off. Very passionate about her work. One can learn a lot from her. Highly recommend this professor if turly wanting to learn.
Good instructor, just some of the work ins more than a little boring. This course should be relisted if it isn't already as a writing intensive course as long as she's teaching it.

Very hard to get an A in this class!
Very high energy lectures. Open discussions in class were fun. Grades kind of hard, but offers lots of suggestions as well.
Chen-Johnson was the perfect teacher for me. Her lessons were clear, structured, and easy to follow. She has high standards for her students, yet she makes sure that they will meet those standards. Her argumentative class gave me skills that will be able useful my whole life. TAKE HER!
SHe gardes pretty strict...I think she grades to high for the level of english it is
She prepares you well for upper-level writing, however very maticulous.
She paraphrases students interpretations of the text constantly to try and keep the discussion on track instead of looking to the text for clear examples of what's being said by the author. She wastes time. The classroom discussion is confusing and disorganized instead of adding clarity to the students projects. This is why her class is hard.
Mary grades very hard. I think she holds students to a higher level than needed. She puts her view right in the classroom and doesn't like others. She gives off a preechy feeling.
EXTREMELY hard grader. Expects too much from students. This could be from the fact that she thinks that ENGL 101 teachers teach us certain things when they don't. However, she is a very nice and fun woman who really does want her students to learn. She's very open to feedback, and she asked/accepted our opinions at the end of the quarter.
She grades hard, but is a great teacher.
She is a very hard grader. However, she is very helpful if you ever have a question.
she is not a hardgrader, a hardheaded instead.
NICEST LADY in the world, NOT A NICE GRADER! The worst thing she does is GRILL students in class, making it PAINFULLY difficult to come up with an answer in time... YEEESH.... >.<
She is fun and nice but there is a lot of work. The assignments are vague and shes a tough grader.
If you have the option, DO NOT TAKE.
Although she knows what she is talking about she has horrible delivery. Everyday you bores you with a powerpoint and is never open for discussion she just lectures ALL class period, really hard grader, her directions are unclear even though she has a 20 PAGE syllabus which is INSANE!!!
This class was supposed to be an argumentative/persuasion class, but it turned out to be nothing like it. Her grading system stinks. I can honestly say I didn't learn a single thing. You are doing something definatly wrong if more than half your class has C's.
hardest grader ever. she talks talks the whole class period. only assignments she gives out are essays thats it.
Chen-Johnson is an instructor that has a lot of integrity when it comes to teaching the cirriculum. She is not an "easy" pass! She expects you to have integrity as well and wants you to be an active participant in your education. Overall, she's a good woman and good teacher, but has a tendency be critical when it comes to essays.
She is a very hard teacher. She is not understanding. Very boring. It's her way or no way. You could work very hard in her class all quarter and she will fail you if she doesn't like you. Picks her favorites, mostly guys.
Make sure you have a strong grasp of mechanics, she grades very harshly. I am a good student and it was pulling teeth to get the A. She does not like personal style in writing and keep it on point or you will fail
When she gives out assignments, make sure you do it the way she wants it. Stick to the topics that she gives & stay on track.
She has started a new grading style and it is difficult. although the grading style is difficult if you just do all the work failing or not you will pass this class she gives optional assignments they are a must do. She is a very tough grader, has no grasp of the concept that her lectures are boring and make no sense. makes you not want to go.
Very hard, quizzes are 1 question, talks too much, lectures allot, and she doesn't answer questions because she wants you to figure out the answers.
Tests were not accurate. She lectured along with powerpoint presentations. Her grading was hard and it is not easy to pass her class.
By far the hardest teacher I've ever had!She is a nice woman, but i was confused in class and outside of class. Her grading style is sooooo hard!... I tried my hardest in her class and still could only pass with a C. I recommend not to take her.
Chen-Johnson is a really nice lady but her class is intense and boring. Her teaching style is all over place and you walk away from class having no idea what you were expected to learn. EXTREMELY tough grader.
She's a tough grader, yes- tough but fair. She expects quality work. She actually teaches and encourages critical thinking, not memorization and repetition-which is why many people struggle. Listen, discuss and write and you will pass her class.
Chen-Johnson is a very tough grader, but I've heard that all English teachers are, so if you're expecting an easy A out of an English class, it is not going to happen. You have to do the work and a ton of research. Everyone in my class had trouble understand what she was expecting out of our essays and that didn't change the entire time.
I took her for yoga, and she was THE perfect fit for this class. She de-stressed my day every time, and left my body feeling a lot less tense. She has the perfect voice for yoga, and leads you through the poses extremely well
very hard
She's not as tough as everyone is saying she is. She expects you to do the work and to do better each essay. She's a great teacher and a great person and she really cares about her students. She wants everyone to succeed and it shows. I recommend her for sure!
This is a good teacher if you like OPTIONS! there are a total of 4 essays and 4 critiques she assigns however she only keeps the top two grades from each therefor maximizing your grade to its full potential! she is very witty and likes to pick on some of her students (I was one for always having a motorcycle helmet) oh and she is a great artist!
she grades easy, but expects your papers to get better through out the quarter. all she is looking for is effort & improvement.
Really friendly. Do and repeat the poses and come to class and you will have an awesome grade. No textbook are needed.
Extremely nice and helpful professor. I really enjoyed yoga! It was very relaxing and she offers make-ups to help your grade if you miss more than two classes. Only a few written assignments, but they're easy and will benefit you no matter what. She is wonderful!!
Yes, she's a down to earth instructor, yet she does expect for you to back up your opinion with evidence (that you will learn in her class). She grades hard, but it WILL benefit you for classes after her. She's always willing to explain if your having trouble on your paper. Her class is worth taking, she preps you for college level papers :)
Awesome teacher! Fun class, lots of opportunities to better your grade, very straight forward.
This class is good for you if you like options. She is very dedicated to the month schedule she creates in the beginning of the quarter. She talks about stories in the book everyday that we read the night before. While we have assignments that are due throughout the weeks, she doesnt go over anything hardly. Speak up & say something if u need help.
I absolutely loved this class. Although she is a challenging teacher she puts a lot of effort into this class. I learned so much from her and this class. I defiantly recommend taking her class. I also recommend doing all essays even though not all are required. It will really help your grade.
Not my favorite, but not my least favorite. It was pretty hard to stay awake and I found myself extremely bored. The work isnt too bad but she is a DIFFICULT grader. However she is really nice and offers a lot of help outside the classroom.
She is very helpful and patient, but she grades so hard. I work very hard but only get a B+....I am sad.
She holds you to a high standard and I liked that she did not give A's for "effort". This class can really help you become a better writer if you are willing to invest the time and energy. She is really enthusiastic about what she teaches and it catches with the class.
My favorite class at TCC to date. If you worked diligently then you will do well. She is the best teacher I have had. If you need help or clarification she is ready to assist you, she is VERY, very smart yet doesn't rub it in. Absolutely love her, wish I could take the class again, shes so awesome!!!!
Mrs. C-J has to be one of the best teachers at TCC. She makes coming to class a whole lot of fun. She isn't one of those teachers who will just lecture to you in monotone, she makes the material her own. She's very flexible when it comes to assignments, you choose which ones you do. Highly recommend her, best teacher you'll ever have guaranteed.
She is a difficult teacher. You have to earn and "A". She doesn't just give them out. She expects a lot from students. She is very fun and interesting and she makes you want to come to class. She is very organized and highly goes by the calender she gives you in the beginning of the quarter.
Favorite class I have taken at TCC. It is work, but you have lots of options to get a good grade. Loved the teacher, super smart, nice, and eloquent .
Mary is an excellent teacher and an engaging speaker. Demands high quality research writing and grades strictly, but that only gets you prepared to succeed in future classes. Don't skip class or text a lot or skip the readings. She appreciates students who come to class with something to say about the readings and doesn't make it easy for slackers.
I enjoyed her Yoga class. She was perfect for the job very calming and helpful. I didn't like yoga at first but grew to like it. The giving project was also interesting.
Great teacher! She was fully engaged with the class every day & I learned a lot. Her class was a little on the difficult side, but just PAY ATTENTION and ask questions if you're confused. Attendance is very important as well; however, she always sends the class the word documents and powerpoints that she uses. There's also a lot of options for HW!
Great Professor If you apply yourself you will do well. She loves teaching and wants you to do well.
Great class and teacher. It was very easy and relaxing. Show up and you'll pass. There is a group project toward the end of the quarter and that's about it besides a few papers that are easy peasy.
I'm VERY GLAD to had take Professor Chen-Johnson's class. She took the time to break things down for me and she always gave me a chance. I would take another class if I could. She's respectful, shes clear, patient and VERY SPECIFIC AND DETAILED.
She is a highly motivated individual and keeps the class interesting. Mrs. Chen-Johnson is a very good professor, the kind of person who will help you. She grades tough but in a good way, as she wants to see her students succeed. She also makes sure that everyone is engaged in the class discussions. So, I highly recommend taking any of her classes.
Participation matters!!! You have to work for your grade, if you have questions ask then don't wait for the last minute. Don't recommend her!
Loved her and the class!
Tough grader, cannot emphasize this enough. If you want to learn a lot then take this class, but if you're trying to get a good grade then don't.
As my first college english class, she made it a rough start. With long essays due in short amounts of time, I was always working on her assignments. I couldn't imagen taking a full corse load in addition to work or anything else with this class.
I can tell that she tries to make the class fun and exciting but to me it came off as a bit immature. She assigns readings that have nothing to do with what we're working on. I do like how she sticks to the calendar that comes with the syllabus though!
I still don't understand what she expected from the essays and critiques. I even went to the writing center and had my paper looked over by one of the tutors there but I still got a C on it. English is my best subject, I've never gotten a bad grade in it before. She's nice, funny and makes class interesting but she's a very tough grader!
Take this professor. Excellent lectures with clear assignment expectations.
She's a good teacher and all, but overall she's a very hard grader (expect essays, critiques, round table discussions, and the dreaded group project). She's provides a class schedule and follows it accordingly and she sends out multiple emails so make sure you check it everyday. Her lectures were sometimes confusing and sometimes it was boring.
If you are on the fence about taking Chen Johnson, here is your answer: DO NOT DO IT!!! English has always been my best subject. In fact, in ENGL 101 i received a 99% final grade. I have never met a professor as tough of a grader as she is. I made 1 mistake in an essay and it resulted as a C. I have NEVER gotten a C, that is until Chen Johnson.
Attendance in this class is only worth half the points of the whole course. The other points go to projects, and tests. I showed up everyday, did all the work and only got a C. Only C I have ever received at TCC. So yeah don't take this, take a different PE class. Also only communicAtes via student email.
Don't take her for humanities 101 online. She is a extremely tough grader. She has very high expectations. No matter how much effort you put into your writing she is never satisfied. Test are very lengthy as well. There is also a lot of writing in her class.
This is a very good beginner's yoga class, but she gives a lot of written work for a 1 credit PE class. She always gives modifications to make the class accessible, but she's very tough about body placement on the mid term practical test (for example, I was marked down for turning out my hips in a couple of poses).
Chen-Johnson was a good teacher. I got A's on ALL of my homework assignments and STILL bordered a C-, due to too few assignments to leverage overall grade. Tests were the only issue for me. Poorly balanced tests due to several essay questions. I found myself having to dig for some test answers. She gave great advice, but I still did not pass.
One assignment per week and only three tests, then a final arts project and exam. Ridiculous that we had to do both a project and exam, when both were very long. She docked 8 points off my final arts project despite me following directions exactly. When challenged about it, she made up excuses; other students in the class liked my project, though.
she's a nice person but can explain what she's teaching in more detail even if you go to her after class and ask for help. Really tough grader, all or nothing type. Honestly just need this class to graduate high school, otherwise I would've dropped it. she thinks 101 students learned all these things in 101 that they didn't. Good luck, you'll need.
She is the worst professor I've taken at TCC. I've been showing up for a month and have no idea what she rambles on about. I did an assignment to the best of my abilities and all she wrote was "no credit" without giving me feedback. She isn't super good at giving good advice, but she is super good at giving bad grades.
She just isnt able to connect. She talks all class period and you will leave not knowing anything she said. She says one thing and then does another and she makes a lot of excuses for her dishelved and unorganized schedule. She is better suited for the yoga class not English.
This lady is no joke. Honestly, she does grade hard and quite frank with you. But with all that said, I loved this class. It was not what I expected, but I learned A LOT and really improved my writing. Do the work, read the material, and you will get the grade you deserve. I got an A-, and I had to work for it. But isn't that what college is about?
professor chen-johnson is incredible. She is very helpful out of class, especially since this class was taken online. The books were interesting and engaging to read, but beware of touchy subjects. she gives great feedback after discussions and assignments, and you quickly get to know what she expects from you. REMEMBER TO PROOF READ AND CITE!!
Very difficult and picky grader, not a lot of constructive feedback on essay's which leaves you wondering what you did wrong. I wouldn't choose to take classes with this professor again, when a little bit of digging would help you make a better choice. I've never had papers graded so harshly before in my life, before or after taking this class.
Enjoyed the class, learned a lot. It's is a busy class and she makes you work for your grade! She does help if you email her (I took online), tough grader but really pulls the knowledge out of you! No textbook but used novels.
I regret taking her class because she is a tough grader and I didn't realize it at first but she makes me put my sweat and tears into my grade. However since the start of the quarter I think I've improved quite a bit thanks to her feedback. Wouldn't take her class again but I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to study under her.
Class is graded off 4 essays throughout the semester. If you fail one essay, you will automatically be stuck with a B or worse. If you don't show up, you won't pass. trust me.
Super nice and even lets students into her class if its full. Relaxing and easy class. One project to do over the whole quarter about self-reflection. A couple easy assignments about your body. Just show up and be present.
Professor Chen-Johnson had a rigorous course that did educate me on the subject but overall was very challenging. If you plan on taking an online class because you think it's easy, you definitely don't want to take this class.
The worst class I took in my two years at TCC. This woman is so ridiculous with grading. I got stuck with a bad grade due to things out of my control and was given no means of assistance to fix my grade before the end of the quarter. I felt helpless and had to run in circles to get a passing mark. Avoid this class like the plague.
She is a very strict and tough grader but does give you multiple opportunities to do EC. The class was online and not easy. I found the books for cheap on Amazon. If you take her class online you NEED to make the time for it or you won't pass. I would not take her again only because she expects you to "proofread" like you are an English teacher.
This professor is not very nice. There is a final test in this class and a final project. She grades super hard so make sure you know grammar. When you email her too she does not help and just tells you to go back and look at stuff. I would not take this professor again.
She is a tough grader and doesn't seem to understand people make mistakes. This class made me feel like my work wasn't worth anything. It was incredibly discouraging. She does offer extra credit which is the only thing that will save my grade.
Tough grader
She has everything due at 6:00pm which is an inconvenience for a lot of students. Each essay she grades harder and harder, and doesnt really believe in As. Her quizzes answers are very similar and you have to watch the lectures for the quizzes. She does things by module meaning you have to read everything to open the assignments.
super harsh grader but you'll definitely learn a lot after her class she also gives lots of extra credit and extra assignments if you miss one.
When I first started her online format, I didn't enjoy the fact that I was required to view each segment before quizzing and discussion posting. However, I love the fact that the weeks aren't locked. I was able to get ahead by 5 weeks in a single sitting because it is a well structured, and relatively digestible course load. Being first A grade.
I wish I could select more tags. She is the best teacher I have taken to date. She responded quickly, worked with any problems, gave awesome, clear, constructive feedback, extra credit opportunities, and provided formats for different learning types. She was really funny, too, especially with examples that she gave. Do the work, and youll succeed.
Most difficult professor ever!! The times that I did ask for help on my assignments and apply her feedback on my work did not help at all. She would send you to re read the material again and again or would drop your grade really bad just because of one mistake you made. Do not take her course!
This woman needs fired
Dr. Mary Chen-Johnson gave me a 0 out of 300 points dropping my already low grade to a 23% because my paper was not the minimum length and she didn't feel I had properly chosen a target audience. I am normally an A- student. She needs to be reminded this is a lower-level English class at a community college, not Harvard
failed2essays after following her guidance and provided recourses. I Emailed her and asked for some credit on the first one, to which she ignored my email and sent a blank response. I emailed back and said my apologies i was asking about receiving credit for my essay as i followed her guidelines. She said no apologies needed for asking questions.
Worst class I have been in! This professor is very unprofessional and doesn't give clear feedback. I have asked for help and all she replies with is to go back and re-read the material. Her feedback on submitted essays is "Focus", focus on what! You couldn't pay me to take a class that she is teaching.
Dont take this class, you will have to do extra work to get mediocre grade. Unfair grader, unclear instructions. Pages of instructions that don't make sense for one assignment. I had a good grade before she gave me a 0/200 on my essay because "it wasn't close enough for the topic" and that's the only feedback I got. (Forcing me to drop the class)
Show up!! Easy to pass if you show up and do the yoga. Quite a few but easy assignments overall; more time-consuming than expected. Group project near the end, but fairly easy. Assignments will not be posted under “grades” category so always check modules for hidden assignments, as they are not always announced to the class! Nice and caring lady!
Professor Chen-Johnson can be tough, but her feedback helps you improve. Attending class, using Unstuckstudy, and putting in the work are key to succeeding in this course. The material is challenging, but doable if you stay engaged.
This professor did not have clear instruction and was very unhelpful. I feel like I didn't learn anything in this class and felt that there was not enough time give for assignments. She also had every assignment set up so you would have to look at or do at least 5 other things before you could access any assignment.
The professor makes it much more complicated than it needs to be by cramming an overwhelming amount of content into her course. She is extremely nitpicky and instead of answering your questions, she will insult your intelligence by telling you to review the syllabus or go back to a chapter for the answer. I do not recommend this professor at all.
Mary Chen-Johnson is a very kind teacher who taught me a lot about yoga. She is very understanding of your situation, and will give you opportunities to make up anything you missed. Since some of the poses in yoga is tough, she gives plenty of accessible ways to do them differently. I would totally take yoga with her again.
RUN! she takes forever to grade. You need permission to switch topics on your papers. No EC. I'm an average 3.7-4.0 student. She failed me with a 23% in per class. I had to retake English 102 and passed with a 95%. She assumes everyone is using AI and failed the class. She's nice but you will be wasting your time taking this class.
doesnt not give clear instructions at all and gives out many assignments weekly. She gave me 20/100 on an essay because it had an 11% similarly score which she said that all essays must have 10% or less. I had sent an email asking if it can be graded for more points since it is 1% over. DAYS later, she said no. I did not pass this class…
