good teacher but you have to attend class an order to get a good grade and know whats going on
Mrs.Copeland is a very hard teacher. She is very picky and critical of the assignments she gives. Take this class if you want to challenge yourself to be the best.
Easy class, you get to revise every paper to get a better grade and not hard to do. Highly Recomend this class
new instructor. does not have everything worked out. a little insecure about her abilities.potential to become a good instructor one day.
I thought I would hate this class but I actually like it.
She's a good teacher of almost all the basics of writing essays. She gives clear examples, easy in-class writings, and interesting topics to write about. She has a nice personality too. She gives chances to those who need it. She loves baseball (just thought I put that here for a fun fact).
I thought this class would be super boring, but I actually enjoyed her lectures.
The class was really easy but she wasn't a very good teacher. She mispelled words a lot and couldn't answer all of my questions.
Ms. Copeland over all is a good teacher, she can grade too hard on papers, but she gives the chance to revise them to get a better grade. Really nice, always in a nice/happy mood. Needs a little more experience, but overall a good nice teacher!
Mrs Copeland is a very informative teacher who expects students to be accountable and take a genuine responsibility for school work. She expects students to learn the process of writing in order to recieve due transferrable credit.
Copeland is my favorite teacher. Her classes are fun, interesting, and she really makes you think for yourself. There's a lot of work, but it's an English class, what do you expect? She knows her stuff and was very helpful in helping me improve my writing. I give her an A+ and recommend her to everyone.
I learned a lot in this class
great teacher always there when you needed help
REALLY GOOD TEACHER...KEPT ME UPDATED WITH THE WORK I NEEDED TO DO...SO I KNEW WHEN EVERYTHING NEEDED TO BE FINISHED
Shes an awesome teacher! she is the only reason i attend valley.. as soon as im done with 102 im going to crafton!
Copeland is a good teacher. If you like english too much, take her. She is nice, but picky. Do your work and PASS the final. BE on time everyday, and it is required to come to class everyday. If you do all that, your going to pass, cuz eventhough you don't pass the final exam, if you came everyday and didn't miss anywork, she will pass you.
she's an awesome teacher. u are allowed to miss like 6 days b4 she drops u but as long as u turn in all the work on time i dont think she will drop you. she had like 5 essays. both books needed costed me like 40 bucks or less, used. i want to take her for 101 but her time doesnt fit my schedule
Copeland was an excellent teacher. The essays and peer reviews were very helpful. She is very organized and clear about the assignments. The book assigned to read was very interesting and I loved the the class discussions, it is very helpful. She is an awesome teacher
I had a great time in her class. I actually learned something and she made it really interesting. I loved reading The things they carried by tim o'brien. I understood the book perfectly. Thank you Mrs. Copeland. Take her if you really want to enjoy English.
This class was great! I hated English and now I love it. Great Professor, sweet lady. Take her, I promise not only will you learn something but she makes it interesting too!
Pretty easy going class. She grades heavily on her Essays. She's pretty laid back, but she's really strict on attendance. If you do all your work you'll be fine.
I had her for Eng 101 Fall 2009. At first i thought i would have a hard time passing the class but soon i passed it through with an A. When it comes to her essays just follow her format and do what she says and you'll mostly get A's. She's a great teacher and i had fun in her class
I had her for english 102. Overall, it was a cool class. There were some good assignments/books, and of course a handful of bad books/assignments. It was an online class, so there was a lot of work to be done. Our final exam was pretty pointless. She is pretty strict, so watch out...
VERY INFORMATIVE, WILLING TO STAY AFTER CLASS TO HELP, OFFERS FULL HELP, RELIES HEAVILY ON THE TEXTBOOKS FOR ASSIGNMENTS, YOU WONT PASS WITHOUT THEM. I PASSED WITH A B. VERY INTO FRANKENSTEIN. WATCHES MOVIES ALOT AS WELL.. OVERALL SHOW UP DO THE WORK, ASK ?'S AND YOULL BE AOK
SHe is one of the best teachers I've ever had and i hate writing (I Still do),She's real down to earth and approachable, she doesn't put herself higher than you, listens to your opinions and works with you instead of against you, take her
Mary Copeland is an excellent teacher. Her 101 class has just the right mix of challenging assignments and the possibility to perform well. Adding to her English credentials is the fact that she is a published author. I would take her again for ANY english needed.
Ms Copeland is a very helpful teacher, she makes sure you do your best on each paper and she encourages you to try harder. I will recommend her a lot.
Took critical thinking online. Teacher not always easy to get a hold of via email. She liked most of my papers and then hated one. If you do get hold of her, she will help you. Weekly assignments, five essays each four pages long. Not the easiest but not the hardest either. Received B in the class.
She's a great instructor and know's her stuff. She is very helpful and sometimes had to get a hold of through email but she's always in her office in the mornings. Only negative things is that if she doesn't agree with your ideas then she wont pass your paper, so just write on what she wants to hear.
Organized learning at its absolute finest. Affordable books that we read. Always responds to emails promptly. Both +/- feedback. Clear instruction and guidance. Truly an asset to SBVC. If only more teachers were like her. Even for an online class, she demonstrates efficiency in grading and one can respect her critique. Get on her Spring waitlist!
Really knows her stuff but allows her judgments to over power the academic requirements. Most definately you have to write to her tastes not just to full fill the assignment.
Mrs Copeland is a good teacher, however, she has admitted to getting picky when grading essays, and I find that to be true. she lets us re write our essays and she prepared us for our final. participation in class is a must and sometimes you have to go to the board not in my case :D I passed eng 914 with a C and 015 with a B that says alot!!!!!!
Continued.. If you are up for the challenge take this class I feel very proud of myself that I passed and how well she prepared me. Thanks you Ms. Copeland!!
Please don't take this professor online. She gives you tons and tons of work that makes it impossible to keep up with the rest of your classes. I've always got good grades in English but this one was very VERY disappointing. Not helpful at all and accusative.
I simply love this professor and so far my favorite English professor! She is very kind, helpful, and does not hesitate to help you if you ask. Its not exactly the easiest class but its not the most difficult either. Her instructions are always clear so no need to worry about confusion. overall she is an awesome professor and that keeps things fun.
Miss Copeland is an amazing instructor. She is very helpful and very clear on the material. She is always available in her office hours. Her essay assignments are very clear; she even has a peer review before turning in an essay.
This class was definitely a challenge, but if you take the time to ask questions and see her after class she is very helpful. I have always hated English, but Mrs. Copeland made it bearable. The essay topics are very relatable and interesting. The longest essay she assigned was 4 pages. I recommend her. She makes English surprisingly enjoyable :)
Ms Copeland is amazing. Her homeworks are easy. Just 3 essays throughout the semester. Gives nice feedback and is really nice. She is really helpful .I retook eng 015 with her after I failed last semester & I received a B this time. I would highly recommend her. I will be taking her Eng 101 next semester! (:
Great teacher, easy to understand. Helps with allot of stuff that is unclear
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! HAD OTHER TEACHERS TO HELP ME OUT! SHE IS SUPER UNCLEAR AND JUMPS AROUND THE CLASS SYLLABUS...
Mrs. Copeland is an excellent instructor. She is very clear and fair on all assignments. Her biggest pet peeve is plagiarism, so just don't cheat, easy as that. Her assignments are simple and easy to understand. I have taken her for both 015 and 101 and if she is available for 102, I hope to have her as my instructor again.
Professor Copeland is a great instructor. She grades her Essay assignments fairly rough but for a high level eng class she should. Not many assignments just a few quizzes and 6 essays. Going to class feels like wasted time due to the lack of real assignments she gives. Overall I recommend taking her.
Very good instructor, well rehearsed on what she needs to say. But feel she grades more on emotion and her opinion than actual work. It's ok as long as you side on her opinion and not the opinions of others
Do not take this teacher. It does not add up to me still how the whole semester I was pulling in A's & B's (mostly A's) And yet my overall grade is a C! She is unclear on most of the assignments. And she does not allow you to turn in early or late work
I can only say that she knows what she does. She made understand what a theme is very clear. Also, student are able to think critically which is what this class if for. Excellent professor. I highly recommend her.
Really awesome teacher. Copeland really knows what she's talking about-- especially in creative writing.
AMAZING POET!!!!!!!!!!
Usually an A student but she is very unclear with her assignments. On papers she ends up marking you for stuff that was not required in her instructions. Then when you tell her she gets offended. She grades your essays based on if she likes them. Would not recommend at all.
Her essay assignments are many and varied, never the same conversation twice. However, these assignments are also broad, meaning unless YOU put in the work to make the subject more specific, this class is going to be impossible for you. She will always put logic before favoritism (Trust me, I tested this) and any grade you get, you earned.
I was once an A student and English was an easy subject for me. I turned in my work ahead of time, done how she asked, yet received a bad grade. If you want to start hating English, then take her course. I took her online class for 4 weeks, but now I regret it. She made her students feel inadequate and used their work as bad examples. She's a gem.
Loved her class!!!
I was too an A student in English, until i took her class. She is one of those English teachers that if she does not like your style, then you get a bad grade even with a few mistakes in your papers. She absolutely hated my style of writing but i rarely had any errors in my papers. She does not give any examples nor does she even do lectures.
If she does not like your style or opinion you get an F. She says sentences are fragments that other teachers at Valley do not. She finds reasons to give you bad grades if she does not like you. She needs to grade on the content of the paper not rather she agrees with it. She even marks things wrong that the writing center says is "Great"
This professor made this English class easy but hard at the same time. She explained the material well and helped improve my writing skills. I would recommend her English class
She's an alright professor. She can be a touch grader, but if you ask for help she is more than willing. Class was a bit boring but as long as you meet your essay requirements and actually try, you can pass. Finals and midterms are pretty straightforward and require analysis. She has a nice personality and she's easy to get along with.
She's isnt a very encouraging teacher. This may be difficult to deal with when you pick topics you feel strongly about and poor effort into and she is critical and cynical. She is big on attendance but most classes we don't do anything particularly important anyway. She likes when students go get help though, you can get your paper pre graded.
At times she was a slow grader. She is a tough grader, but fair. If you are looking for an easy A, probably not the professor you are looking for. But overall she is fine professor. If you don't need your hand held through the class and you want a slight challenge, I would recommend her.
I am a returning college student that has always been uninterested in Literature. Ms. Copeland got me through this class after withdrawing it 5 or more times over the past 20 years. I appreciate her commentary on my papers and her encouragement to the other students.
Overall, professor Copeland was okay. I was given straight 0's on a couple assignments because my opinion was not the same as hers. I decided to take everyone's advice and just agree with her stance for my first essay and received an A. Want to pass? Read the book, agree with her point of view, and you'll be good to go.
Didn't really enjoy her as a professor. She was a tough grader, almost seemed like she took her job a little too seriously. This is only a lower division English class, but you have to do quite a bit of work. If you are not the best at English, like myself, I would not recommend taking her. Didn't drop this class so that I could get it over with.
This professor gave me a lot of feedback on my essays and it really helped me to learn how to write an academic research paper. It wasn't always easy, but I learned a lot. She was very quick to respond to emails if I had questions, and encouraged me to write about things that interested me.
I was having a hard time with topics for essays and she really helped me focus. She always responded to my questions quickly and gave me good information. She seemed like she really wanted to me to do well.
She seems tough at first glance, but what matters is the final impression. She is dedicated, caring and a very thorough critic. Dont be intimidated, its her job to make you a better writer after all! Write her about your struggles and help will come your way immediately. Work hard and you wont regret taking her English class.
Professor Copeland helped me understand how to cite correctly. I had to do a lot of work, but I know my writing improved and I feel ready to transfer to a University. She really wants me to be successful.
I was lacking of sleep while I was taking this class because there were 4 weekly discussions, 1 weekly assignment, and 4 essays total. he took long time to grade all assignments. he didn't post the assignments on time as he said so there was not enough time for us to finish all assignments and he did not give us more time since it was his fault.
Professor Copeland is an incredibly inspirational woman. I really enjoyed taking her class. She gave good feedback and was gentle and kind in steering people in the right direction. The only negative I have to say is that it would take a long period of time to get grades back.
I have had the worst experience with this instructor. I would email her all the time about assignments. I felt compelety lost in her class. I will not take this class again. I advise you to take another instructors class before Copeland.
I took her 4 week summer class and it was though! If you enjoy English and can face pressure then take her if not than I do not recommend her! Assignments are 2 discussion + 2 responses a week (350words) 2 textbook assignments and 1 essay per week. Mid-Term takes 2-3 hours to complete as well as the final! GOOD LUCK if you take her
Good professor. I took her summer class and requires a lot of effort but if you have the time to do your work you'll do good, it's not hard. She gives all the material and information for you to succed. You have to read two books for the course, do two assingments, two discussions of 350 words, and one essay per week, and a midterm and final exam.
I had one last chance to pass English 102 before transferring to UC. I was taking 3 other courses at the time that took most of my energy, including a very tough calc based physics class, this is why I was only able to get a C. She is super nice and a more than fair grader. I got 90%s on all papers. I highly recommend taking her online course.
Good teacher she makes you write papers the right way and better
Shes a great English teacher. She literally tells you how your paper has to be. You can show her draft and shell look at it real quick and make minor adjustments. A little tough grader but hey this is college !
Do the work and you'll do just fine. I only received a high B because of my own mistake in not participating in the first weeks discussion board. Follow the guidelines and there's no way to fail the course.
I really enjoyed her class. She helped me a lot in learning how to structure my papers better. She's fast at responding to emails and she gives great feedback. Do the work & ask for help! Would gladly take her class again
She's the reason I changed my major to English. I started with a more "practical" major, but thanks to her I learned that if you're going to do college once, then why would you settle for less than who you were meant to be? If you don't plan on showing up, show up late, or don't turn in all of the work, then don't bother. Respect this woman's time.
Professor Copeland was great! She does give a lot of work but it is easy and if you do it you will pass. She is a very fair grader and her papers are not hard. Anytime I ever had any questions or needed help she was always quick to respond. She gives good examples and explains each assignment thoroughly.
dont feel heard
Very good
Horrible instructor, will literally grade you very harshly on purpose to drop your grade. her quizzes dont make sense i usually missed 1 question. but discussions and papers she grades so harshly literally dropped my grade by a whole letter grade. she truly doesnt care. would not recommend anyone taking her class ever.
Professor Copeland is an AMAZING professor. I highly encourage anyone reading this to join this class immediately. This class required only 1 online textbook and 1 novel. Take good notes and always ask questions. There are a total of 4 essays and they are straight forward. Professor Copeland also gives out example essay. Lino
Great teacher, there are 4 essays throughout the year but they aren't difficult and if you plan it right you'll find yourself breezing through the class. She also assigns a novel (this semester was In The Country We Love by Arlene Guerrero) but they aren't boring, so it makes it easy to read and enjoy.
Fantastic teacher! Course well mapped out, full of valuable information. Takes the time to give excellent and specific feedback. Always accessible. Her insights into poetry, character development, settings, themes, and so much else are incredibly spot on. My writing improved 100% with her instruction. She's the absolute best! I already miss her.
If you're not a good writer she will be tough to please when you have writing assignments because she is extremely picky. (Probably thinks you should be Shakespear to be in her class). Too many discussions for online classes. If the work is getting done why do we need 4 different discussion? ANNOYING. why is it a requirement to speak to others?
Professor Copeland is a very talented instructor, who gives detailed feedback. She expects a lot from her students, so make sure you proofread your work and do everything she asks, but she is very fair, and will help you if you ask. Her class might be difficult, if you struggle with writing, but you will come out the other side a much better writer!
she's has no mercy for you if ur a bad writer and nit picks your work for no reason. this is a undergrad class not masters program for English
an amazing professor! read the textbook, read the essay guideline and expectations, and be sure to ask any questions you have. if you do these things, you most likely will succeed. show her your work and ask for any advice/feedback, she WILL help you!
Super harsh grader. Take another professor.
We got more discussions than actual assignments and her quizzes are only one attempt, which is the stupidest thing of all. Essays were fun, but again, way too many discussions and the word count was way too high when she only gave us one topic to write about.
Would I take Mary Copeland again??? If I could only take her classes I'd take them all day long! She's amazing. She knows so much about literature, poetry, literature in different time periods, Gothic, Romantic, Modern, Victorian. She is absolutely amazing. If you graduate from SBVC and HAVEN'T taken a class with Mary Copeland? You just screwed up.
Attendance is mandatory, you can not make up assignments or quizzes if absent. Grading is a bit harsh but realistic. She is a great teacher, and will help you.
The Professor is good at what she does, but very harsh grader, no chance to make up grades or any extra credit available.
Instructions and feedback were rarely clear. Extremely hard grader.
