Great class if you are open-minded, but it's not all women's lib because the roles of men in society are covered as well. Mary is so nice, you just want to take all of her classes so that you can talk to her more often.
Ms. Courtis is great! Very open-minded and covers various topics. Not boring, good lectures!
WOW! She smart, open minded, interesting, the whole package. Her tests are mult choice and very easy if you show up to class and just listen! I dig her!
The two cultures we studies were both Shaman cultures. She had students participate in Shaministic rituals to learn about Lakota culture. Trys to convince students why these beliefs can go along with their religion. Easy class but i would recomend another teacher.
If you care about your grade this is a bad class to take. She is very unhelpful and doesnt work to help her students. I asked her about my grade on a paper and she just told me to read someone elses who recieved a higher grade. She wouldn't explain her grading system or what I had done wrong.
I think Mary is a great teacher. She knows a lot about anthropology, and the cultures we've studies in the class are beautiful and interesting. The shamanism part was wonderful too, I would definately take the summer class.
Mary is an absolutely fascinating person. She engages the class to look outside of your normal beliefs and to try and understand other cultures. I would reccomend her to anyone with an open mind.
Good class. However, somewhat limited due to the lacking enthusiasm and previous education of class mates--as it is required by many health industry programs. Just actually do the reading and pay attention in class. She tests on specific practices and beliefs of the covered shamanistic cultures.
I loved her. she went out of her way to help me with anything i was not clear on. I totally disagree with the person that said she was unhelpfull. I think a person could easily enjoy this class and do well (if they try). Its not an easy A but there is a study guide for every test. I recamend her..
She is amazing. One of the best professors I have ever had. Her class was extremely interesting and I will make sure to take another one with her. She's very helpful and easy to talk to.
I liked her a lot, however she seemed to push her agenda of Shamanism on her classes. Just my oppinion. I wanted to learn about Cult. of the World, but it ended up being more about her religion. All in All I liked her though.
Mary is awesome. The only thing that could have made the class better, would be to remove the less openminded students. She tries to get you out of the box, not everyone is comfortable with that. I feel it's their loss. Also she is a very nice person and very helpful. Also her classes are realitively easy if you pay attention.
Courtis is a great teacher. Her class is pretty easy but that leaves room to completely enjoy the contents of her class. The topics are very interesting and never boring.
Very boring teacher. I expected to learn about the Shamanic practices of different cultures, instead, I learned that I hate meditating. She pushed her views onto students, and when questioned she backed herself into a corner and refused to answer (speaking metaphorically here). All in all I will never take a class from her again, it was horrid!
Although the concepts she teaches are easy to understand, her teaching of them is bland and boring. She spends a ton of time trying to teach students how to meditate and go on "spiritual journeys". This included spending many classes laying on the floor with your eyes closed.
Mary courtis is a wonderful nice teacher. She is interesting to listen to and cares about her students. She does not give difficult material with out completely explaining it. She shows a lot of movies so just bring your snacks and enjoy the class. She is a GREAT TEACHER. She really knows her subject.
I really like Mary, She's super nice and has a lot to say.
have her for Anth 103 & WS101... class discussion is mostly how we got through both classes, plus films and a couple of speakers. midterms are straight from lecture, plus she gives a study guide. Take good notes and you will do fine. Had to also write 1+ short paper. She offers extra credit as well. I would take more classes from her.
Took the online class. Your grade is based on two 40-question scantron tests. Also opportunity for extra credit paper (but you don't know how much it's worth.) There is no study guide so make sure you buy the "optional" study guide book along with the textbook. Little details are asked, not just the general concepts.
cool teacher, only two twenty five question tests that she gives you the study guide for, and two very short essays. Easy class, her teaching gets a little weird sometimes though she is really into shamanism.
took online course winter term 07, not difficult class, but she refuses to respond to emails or contacts, seems very distracted & unprepared I have never had a teacher refuse to be contacted so that part made the experience frustrating, would not recommend if you are a student who likes interaction with your teacher & feedback, subject interesting
I don't recommend her at all, unless you like to talk to a rock! She spends more time trying to make us believe in spirits than teaching cultural anthroplogy. I really regret having taking her class.

If ur looking for an easy A, this is it. Only two 25 pt. exams and an essay. Its easy to pass w/o perfect attendance. Mary is a very pleasant woman. She really knows her material, but sometimes the material gets weird ( or interesting) depending on ur beliefs. She believes in shamanism and it may be dificult to accept the concept for some.
Showed up to take the exam from my Web+TV course and she was not there. We as a class also had to move to another class room because the one she told us to go to was already occupied. She hasn't wrote much on the blogs at my other online Profs have.
Wonderful professor! Great insights into anthropology and really respects other cultures. Lectures are informative, and there is a lot of discussion with the class. Very hands on. Do not take her courses if you are narrow-minded and just want reinforcement that your culture/religion are the center of the universe. Will expand your horizons.
Do not take her online if you can help it. She may be great if you have her in class but online she is not present. She does not respond to emails, does not post a breakdown of grades, and has interacted with us maybe twice so far this quarter. If you must take the online class, be prepared to completely teach yourself with no feedback.
Courtis is a loon!! If you like to talk to rocks and mermaid spirits this class is for you! She discusses elements of Shamanism as if they are absolute truth, it's no different than listening to a fundamentalist Christian profess their nonsense. Upside is the books and videos are interesting and the class is an extremely easy A.
Mary is so nice, but could have made material more interesting. She's an anthropology teacher and it shows. The material was tough but she's a fun teacher.
I am an anthropology major and I found this class extremely boring. I was so glad when I finished the final! Her tests are always easy and it's not very hard to get an A.
she's great you just need to read the 2 required books that are pretty interesting and the tests are a breeze. I give her many stars*****
I was very interested in this topic prior to signing up for her online class. I don't suggest taking her online unless you have incredible memorization skills.
Worst "teacher" I have ever had. She took a two week vacation in the middle of Summer term. She would not answer email questions (her syllabus states that she answers email 1 day per week, but that isn't even accurate). She did not grade anything until the end of the class, so no one knew where they stood as far as grades go. BAD EXPERIENCE!!!
Completely not present. She gave little to no feedback during the term. Many in the class wondered if we even had an instructor. I wasted my time and money taking an online class from this instructor.
So...I wish I hadn't taken this class online. Not much to base our grades on, and going into finals week, I have NO IDEA how I'm doing in this class, other than I got a B on the midterm. Nothing else has been graded!!! It's not cool to have gotten ZERO feedback! I have taken many online classes and always have some idea on where I stand!
Not very responsive to emails, often did not get back to me at all, or when it was too late. Disorganized confusing blackboard page. I've taken many online classes and this was the most poorly organized. Tests were tricky and very detail oriented, often more than one reasonable answer. Detail unrelated to study guide.
Completely useless at teaching an online class. No interaction. No grades posted, no response to emails. Not interested in teaching or encouraging learning. Do NOT take her online classes! A waste of money and time.
I loved Mary's approach to teaching Cultural Anthropology and any student would be lucky to have her! Her tests were very doable, she's entertaining and fun, and overall the class was a joy to attend. I learned alot!! Great teacher, interesting class. Loved the class and the teacher!!!
I do not recommend taking her online class. No feedback and the tests were hard!
Online class-- very straight forward, you do the work, you will score accordingly on the tests. Tests are not hard, can be completed in half an hour or less if you're prepared. Feedback given if questions are asked. A lot of reading, but it makes sense as it's an ONLINE class, not free credits for not doing any work.
There are very few assignments in this class, which for me made it an easy class since I found the subject matter and her particular focus on Shamanism very interesting and engaging. The class is extremely laid back, so if you enjoy that, take this class. If you want something more intense and interactive, maybe not. She's a good teacher overall.
ONLINE CLASS: Her Blackboard page is all over the place & assignments on there from 2008. The date of the final was after the term ended. She was non existent. You won't know where you stand in class grade. Her tests are multiple choice. Her tests are not conceptual as she states. Overall easy but a lot to take in for only 40 questions in 2 tests.
She's a fabulous teacher! She knows so much, and she knows her students. Wonderful!
I loved having Mary as a professor!!!
A very nice, if somewhat scatter-brained, instructor. Very easy class(2 essays and 2 scantron exams). Be prepared to take some information(specifically on Shamanism) with a grain of salt. Regardless, I would definitely recommend her.
Mary is a great teacher. As long as you've read the assignments OR took notes on the lecture, you will find the tests easy. She tells you what will be on the test with HEAVY hints as she's writing it on the board. She also has one of the most robust laughs and is interesting. RECOMMENDED!
This class was simply fascinating. Studying other cultures and religion, Shamanism in this class, offered ideas and understandings that can be used in all walks of life. Be open to possibilities outside of your own comfort. Be ready to learn and most importantly, read and take notes. Mary is a fun instructor with great stories!
Good for IN CLASS ONLY. DO NOT take Mary for an on-line class. Nice, knowledgeable, but she should leave the on line classes to other instructors.
I took her class online and it was a MISTAKE. I feel sorry for the other students in this online class if they had any struggles at all because she would not be there to assist. She didn't answer very important emails and phone calls from me the week of the final. It's easy to see she is very scattered and not interested in her online class.
Listen to the other students and myself when we say not to take her classes online. The lessons are very scattered and so it's easy to miss stuff, she gives almost no lectures, and her tests are on a bunch of random facts and she gives NO study guide. She also doesn't ever respond to emails. Take this class on-campus. It's useless online
AWFUL professor for an online course. VERY slow to respond to e-mails if she ever responded. NEVER knew my grade or where I stood until my final grade was posted through PCC. Did not participate at all in online discussions and gave no feedback on anything to students.
Didn't learn a thing in this course. Mary didn't respond to e-mail in a timely manner if at all and never posted any grades until the final grade was posted. DO NOT TAKE FOR ONLINE COURSES!!!
I was a straight "A" student until this class. I diligently studied and still found the test questions too precise and too far fetched for any student. I'm working on my second bachelors degree and have taken over 20 different professors. She by far has been the most unhelpful. Find a teacher that provides feedback and "wants" to help her students

Very difficult for online classes. Assignment expectations were unclear. Professor rarely communicated with students. Essay questions and topics had little to do with assigned reading. Online discussions were like a ghost town. I literally called the school to see if the class had been canceled after two weeks of inactivity from the professor.
Wow, I can't believe the scores this teacher is getting here. This was an easy class. First, there are no deadlines on discussion forums. Pop quizzes are given with plenty of notice to read section. Overall, she is hands off in the online format. If you made a bad grade in this class it is because you don't understand the material, dummies punished
Wow, this class was horrible. The test questions were very precise and had little to do with the course. She "customizes" her textbooks, so that she is the author and they are really expensive. Expectations were incredibly unclear, and she didn't respond to messages.
An online class. She disappeared half way through the term, so ppl were blindly posting in the forums hoping they were right. Modules tell us to read from one book, but hardly any of it is in the exams. Make sure you get the other book & follow along yourself, or you'll fail. If it wasn't for the curve, the whole class would've failed. AVOID!
TELEWEB class: This was an fairly easy class. You can learn a lot if you can deal with her hands off approach and zero feedback which she is very clear about from her syllabus. Other than that, you must deduce information from the syllabus and piece together actual due dates and expectations for the class like a researcher. Clever? You decide.
This is an online class or at least the one I am taking is. This class is disorganized to say the least. I have emailed the teacher several times and it takes her 5 or more days to reply. The D2L class page is a mess. The whole class is a mess...uggg
This is the most disorganized class I have EVER taken.
Mary is my favorite professor I've had. If you are interested in Anthropology and want to get a different outlook on things I really reccommend her classes. She is one of the most brilliant people, but she is also more than a bit eccentric.
TERRIBLE instructor. Syllabus was very unclear. Minimum instructor involvement. Doesn't answer emails. Zero feedback. I got an A on the one assignment grade she notified me about but got a B in the class and I have no idea why. The subject matter is interesting but there could have been no instructor at all and I would have learned as much.
Very disorganized in content and grading.
It's a lecture based class with one Essay and two tests. I enjoyed myself and the content. She's very intelligent.
She is a very unique, inspirational teacher. I value a lot of the perspectives she teaches in a college setting. Sometimes the way she teaches some of the information can be confusing. Just ask her for clarity and she's more than willing to help. She has a lot to offer, if your willing to do your work and keep an open mind.
I took her Cultural Anthropology class online. Completely disappointed. The only communication I had from her all term was when she said, "Ok, are you all ready for your mid-term? Well, I guess you're as ready as you can be." Then, handed out the mid-term tests. She didn't speak at all when she handed out the final.
I took Courtis' online class. There was no communication. The syllabus was confusing and vague. There was one assignment with little description about her expectations and two exams with questions often pertaining to small details from the readings, as if she were trying to trick students instead of test them on their knowledge.
I took her online anthropolgy 103 course. She was not accessible at ALL! I emailed and called her and she would never respond. It was absolutly awful.
This was the most disorganized class ever!! The online discussions included 10 other posts from ANOTHER CLASS which she just “oh don’t do those ones”. She did not post even ONE grade to the online portal so I still have NO idea how I did. Halfway through term she stopped answering emails. Tested on tiny little factoids not big topics/subjects!
I took this class online. I began wondering about half way through the term if she even existed. She NEVER returned phone calls or emails. Several students had to get ahold of the SS dean to get ahold of her! Awful.
worst "teacher"if you can call her one.you do al the work yourself, which isn't bad until test time &she tests you on something unimportant & not from your readings that you're not sure of the answer.some of the questions made no sense at all or had 2possible answers and she only permitted 1, so you had to guess which she chose to be correct.
Online class with in person tests. Her exams were not relative to assigned material in text.Mostly small anecdotal information from videos. She was non existent in the class.Did not respond nor comment or clarify.Pretty lame for a college professor.
I took this class online and do not recommend it! I've heard she's very nice in person but it's as if she almost doesn't exist when taking her class. She misspelled something in her files every week. She has only graded 3 things this term and the final is due in three days. This experience makes me never want to take another online class again.
Easy going teacher and easy curriculum.
The hands down worst educational experience I've ever had. From day one, syllabus was out of order, nonsensical, and rife with spelling and grammar mistakes. She has almost zero interaction with students. Impossible to get a hold of, so don't expect any help or clarification on her error-filled syllabus. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Mary Courtis is a great Instructor. She is highly knowledgeable about history and Anthropology. Her style of teaching is class discussions. You have to be responsible and keep track of the course. Attendance is helpful because the tests are on class discussions.
That was the most MISERABLE class I have ever taken I can't believe she required that much work for a 100 level intro class. Yes, I get that this is college, but I already have a degree and that felt like the work of a senior 400 level class. I agree with the person below, the workload is from the fiery pits of...
Nice person I guess but the online course consists of WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much busy work. Especially at the end of the term. Overwhelming, with TWO huge assignments due on the last day. Very annoying.
You read about it discssion in class and you watch movies about the topic. very knowlegeable about the subject EASY tests and Social norm violation is very easy and fun assignment. class attendence is not mandatory but u will miss easy points for some easy pop quizzes. Easy awesomne class highly recomended!
Entertaining and easy. You actually learn instead of cram.
Believe negative ratings; they are true. She doesn't answer emails/calls, is nom-existent in the class 95% of time, syllabus isn't updated for current term, very unorganized and unclear. Told entire class a week into term that we all have wrong book and need to order it online somewhere. Avoid like the plague;can't believe PCC has her on staff.
The worst teacher I have ever had. Similar to the post from the last student. The teacher never updates Syllabus, and the tests are never from current readings they are from the next weeks readings. Her schedules never correlate with the readings. She assigned numerous readings that were impossible to find.
for an intro class, this was ridiculous. Nothing was consistent. I had things due any where from 6am to 6pm. difficult to get into a routine. Buy her book its not a required book or even at pcc. she doesn't tell you about it until halfway into the term. You wont be able to find the required reading otherwise. Don't take this course!
Horrible teacher. Inconsistent with everything. Did not answer emails in a timely manor. Half of the time you spent doing the teachers job, such as locating what work we were suppose to complete and attempting to decipher her numerous misspelled words. The Final exam there were so many misspelled words and terms. She made class near impossible
The worst teacher I have ever had. So sad that PCC has let this woman teach. There are so many other teachers that would actually care to teach their students.
So dull. The class subject is fascinating and the discussions can be interesting, but after a while it's just like scraping a cheese grater against your face. Courtis is a sweet lady but she's so unorganized and irrelevant. She just talks about her personal beliefs (Shamanism) and goes off on bizarre and painfully boring tangents.
I absolutely love this professor. Her lectures constantly grab my attention, are interesting, and easy to keep up with. Tests were super easy, as long as you paid attention in class, you'd pass no problem. I barely even opened my textbooks, which I would have been more upset about had I paid top dollar for them. Definitely taking more courses.
All we did was watch movies every day. Easiest A's ever if you take her classes. Quizzes are easy, and like two homework assignments for the entire semester. Didn't learn much at all.
Loved her class, she is awesome. I learned so many cool things in that class. She tends to go off on tangents, but they are usually about really interesting things and she always has a way to tie it back in to what we are studying!
The class was super fun and interesting, though she seemed to sort of check out halfway through the term (grading things really late and so on), and her feedback wasn't in-depth. But she was still nice and the class was still cool.
She was terrible! She moved the final deadline back by one day and locked the website so no one could gain access. She hasn't graded the first assignments I've turned in and she changed her syllabus halfway through without notice. I've emailed her multiple times and never gotten back to her. Seems like everyone loves her in person. Me not so much
Absolutely atrocious professor. Continually changed due dates throughout term, and info from syllabus, course content, and dropbox all differed. Responses to emails curt and fail to address more than one question at once. Does not clarify requirements adequately, grades arbitrarily, and provides worthless, short feedback. Avoid if possible.
Good class, very interesting and applicable material. Good teacher too, who always responded to my emails on time and graded things on time and with fairness. There are usually short weekly quizzes and a discussion post, as well as a final exam and paper. Nothing too hard. I'd take her class again.
The discussions were thought provoking, but she was unorganized, syllabus didn't match calendar etc, lots of typos and spelling errors. She was flexible tho and let u do the work missed due to unclear expectations. There was absolutely NO feedback for anything at all. The final was easy Overall it was an easy yet frustrating class.
Long lectures, but make sure to take notes. Study guide covers all of the topics, tests and papers aren't hard.
The syllabus has requirements for the term paper and the deadlines, but the course calendar has even more info about the paper. It's inconsistent at best. In addition, things don't seem to be graded on time. She discourages skipping ahead in the course material, but then allows you to turn things in until the last second on the last day of term.
I like to give feedback since I find this website very helpful. I really enjoyed the material. I thought the instructor was knowledgeable. She provided thought-provoking questions for discussion posts. I would definitely take another class from her.
I looked forward to going to this class, even though it was first thing in the morning. The class was more of a lecture class, and we had very few tests, which were both very easy. This class is an easy A, but is extremely interesting, and you will learn a lot from her! A small effort will go a long way!
I really enjoyed this class :) ... Mary is very kind and respectful of her students ... is treated the same in return ... The assigned books were interesting ... Pop quizzes were nothing to be scared of or anxious about ... take good notes. read them and all will be great ... Tests are straight forward and follow the study guide ...
There is plenty of reading to do, since it is a theory class. Timelines and expectations were clearly laid out in the syllabus. Instructor replies to emails quickly. lf you don't do the readings or complete the discussion assignments, you won't do well. If you put forth some effort you will do well.
If you even have the slightest bit of OCD, DONT TAKE HER CLASS. She has terrible spelling and grammar, she is very disorganized, and she will write discussion posts and leave out vital information. For example, she gave out an extra credit assignment of watching a lecture and she wrote the address as "1126 SW Portland OR 9705" it drives me crazy!!!
Very clear instructions on assignments. Easy to get a hold of. Prosessional
If you can overlook the spelling errors and dated material, this professor is actually pretty good. It's a decent amount of work but it's clearly stated. Discussion post and replies, quiz, lecture, one to two chapters and one to two documentaries weekly along with two papers and a final exam.
She's likely a very nice person. Her test and quiz questions were always worded oddly, like she was trying to trick you. Some straight up made no sense. Obnoxious at times but relatively easy and straightforward course.
She seemed nice and it was an easy class, but she was super unclear about assignments and due dates. Like, she didn't say anything about them. It was my first online class, so I thought maybe that's just how it was for online classes, but after taking a second class, I found that one to be much better. Test heavy, which I found at the end, surprise
Mediocre, really. She uses a lot of outdated material and the majority of discussion questions were uncomfortably tone-deaf. She does not give any feedback with weekly grades. Not super difficult but wouldn't recommend. However! This class did not require a textbook which was nice.
Loved this Class. Professor Courtis and all at PCC Anthro make you work for any grade. They love their subject and, like philosophy, it isn't for everyone. Be ready to read tons, post weekly discussion and take a ton of tests. There is a reason for it. Ask for clarification and stay in touch. There will be extra credit. Not easy but worth the work
Her presentation of the online class was sloppy. Many of her online lectures as well as quizzes and the Final had mis-spellings. One particular question on the final asked to describe how "mutatio" occurred. She meant mutation and at first I thought I missed something in the class. The course felt unprofessional like I had found it randomly online.
This professor had clear expectations and would tell me why I got the grades I did. The discussions can be time consuming and a little tough and there is a weekly quiz but as long as you read the lecture and the extra articles she gives you, you should be fine.
If you email her don't hold your breath for a response. Tons of homework, discussion questions and papers. I didn't mind all that, but her lack of explanation when asked bothered me. Her grading style is hot or miss as well. If you are not one of the cool kids, expect to have to work even harder.
I like this professor and I have been in two of her classes now. Her ATH102 class is paper heavy I had to do 5 during the term. Three were based on looking at litter on streets. Her quizzes are really hard in my opinion I get steady 80s even though I take thorough lecture notes and there is one every week. Discussions are pretty simple however.
There were a few issues with the quizzes where I had gotten the answers wrong and I felt like they were right, but she was happy to adjust my score when I plead my case. Sometimes it was an error in the answer key, sometimes it was an error in my understanding. Lots of reading and a few short papers, but I still managed an A taking 17 credits.
I enjoyed this course on shamanism--it made me fall in love with cultural anthropology. I wish she'd have someone proofread her lectures because they are a mess. She's very reasonable about grading as long as you show a genuine interest in the topic. She definitely has her biases (anti-scientific), but she lets you speak your mind and I love that!
Ms. Courtis is a kind and decent human being and the subject matter was fascinating. But the ratio of work in this class versus my other concurrent class was about 80/20. She means well. But there is just too much material to try to ingest and the questions on her quizzes and final were often tricky or pertained to material we didn't cover.
Worst professor I've had so far. Tons of confusing grammatical and spelling errors in her writing. Course work was laughable. FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!
There were numerous spelling and grammar errors throughout the content, but most of the time, this did not effect understanding of the material. If it did, she was more than happy to fix it and clarify what she meant. The final paper was not entirely relevant to what we had learned during term, but overall this class was extremely interesting.
Super interesting content, and it's clear that Mary is interested in this subject. Discussions were lively and thoughtful. She responded quickly to my emails and was helpful in understanding content. There were some spelling errors in the modules, but if one can look past this, there is much to discover about this topic, and even about oneself.
Amazing person, smart and inspirational
She cares about the subject but only gives 10 minutes for quizzes (online) and there's an 8-10 pg paper at the end of term that doesn't really apply to what we learned. No book , just ted talks and info she provides. Mostly just discussion posts and quizzes weekly. I thought this class would be easy but ended up being tough!
As others mentioned, there were errors in the content that could be easily fixed with proofreading, though I didn't feel comprehension was affected by this. Mary is clearly interested in the course content, and unlike most other instructors I've had online, she chimes in on discussions. Good feedback and caring nature. Super interesting material!
Amazing professor
A truly knowledgeable professor. She is a fast, fair grader. Very friendly and always let us say hi to her cats before lectures. :-)
Professor Courtis, You are awesome for giving students the space to speak during lectures. There were so many times a mansplainer in the class tried to act like he knew what he was saying, and Prof. Courtis was always so polite to him. Way to kill em with kindness u go !!!
I enjoyed the content provided by Dr. Courtis. Her passion for what she is teaching shows in her impressively structured lectures. Her feedback is pleasant as well. I would certainly take another class with Dr. Courtis.
This class was beyond easy. The quizzes and responses to our discussions weren't due several days after class. The discussions were based on the subject we were learning that week but were meant to provoke us to critically think about current social issues. There is a huge research paper for the final.I didn't know we had a textbook until weeks in.
The class was set up was a odd, as shed expect you to come to class already viewed the weeks discussion topic and do research on it, then discuss it in breakout rooms. During the same day, we would learn about that topic and were expected to do the quiz/discussion post that night. Instead of having a brief overview & then having the week to work.
I took a full schedule and had to dedicate 50% of my time to this class to do well. Really long weekly readings, discussion posts with two long readings, and quizzes. And the work doesn't slow down when the 8-10 page term paper hits. Got an 80% on my initial research I spent hours on because I didn't use a specific database she never mentioned.
Professor Courtis lives in her own world- which is not surprising for an doctorate of Anthropology. Some students seem to really enjoy her, others not so much. I am heavy on the "not so much". If you love getting caught up in whimsical material with no objective answers ( quizzes are all over the place) then she is for you!
Very disappointed in how little of this class was focused on Anthropology. More motivated by political idealogy than anything else. Discussions are an opportunity to virtue-signal instead of learn.
Solid prof. I feel like Id rate her much higher if this class hadnt been online. She encouraged rigorous debate among her students and helped us examine how our own cultures made us think and feel about other cultures and practices.
I would recommend to please NOT take her class. Her instructions for assignments are extremely unclear. She does NOT respond to emails. The discussions are presented in a way that could start a discussion, but the material she provides (the only ones you can use) only point to one answer. Each student agrees with one another and there is no debate.
It was a pretty easy class. I don't know how much new information I learned. Dr. Courtis assigned several assignments related to racial justice that were completely unrelated to the course content. I'm all for informing students of our racist past and present and advocating for change, but I would hope it would be relevant to the course material.
Take this class if you want an easy A, but not if you actually want to learn anything. One discussion post and 2 replies a week, 1 quiz per week, a final exam and 2 papers.. Easy, but very few things to be graded on so take heed.
I love this class. She is very considerate with homework. Amazing lectures. She responded to the emails the same day. I do not know why some students complain about her teachings on this webpage. Just read the lectures and do the homework. You are NOT going to spend many hours reading. This class will be SUPER easy! Recommend it
Professor Mary is an excellent instructor. I loved her class. I took ATH 101 with her, and I'll take ATH 102 and 103 in the Fall with her again. You DON'T spend several hours in this class. Easy course. Her D2L is highly organized. She responds to emails in short time. I'll take all of her classes in order to complete my AGS.
Overall Courtis was good, but one major reservation: quiz and test questions are sometimes specific and arcane to the point of absurdity. One example: second week of class is on Mendelian genetics; only one question on the final about the topic, and it requires you to remember the letters used for stem height. Testing memory, not understanding.
The content was very interesting, albeit a little strange at times. I didn't really use the textbook. Some of her quiz questions had multiple correct answers and if you didn't pick the right right answer you'd get it wrong. Sometimes the "correct" answer was false. She wanted you to squeeze a lot into the papers. Discussions were silly. Many typos.
I have absolutely no clue what I signed up for. This is an archeology course but we are solely learning about ancient Egyptian mythology stories? Fine, except then the main project/final 10 page paper of the term has NOTHING to do with what we spend all our time learning about, as it is a paper using archeology methods she does not prepare us for.
Dr. Courtis is a great teacher, she is very passionate about her subject. There is a lot a reading from the textbook/online lectures each week, but with quizzes only ever other week, it is easy to stay caught up with the material. There is one long term paper, but she gave plenty of opportunity to get help with it. Take this professor if you can!
Mary is cool. This was the ONLY class I didn't get behind on when I was in the hospital for a couple days. Very very interesting & unique material. I'd give 4/5 because her feedback can be harsh without giving a very clear idea of what we're even supposed to answer. Also, there can be some sensitive content without any warning, so beware lol.
An intro level class I took just to earn credit hours.. this is not at all entry level, the 10 page final paper is disgusting and her grading system is even worse.
Anthropology 101 was not what I expected. I had emailed this professor multiple times. Not once did she get back to me. Her grading system is terrible. Harsh grading on discussion posts. This class was the worst class I have ever taken!! I withdrew from it before the 10 page final. Save yourself.
Get ready to read and and not understand what you learn, it's a 100 level course but why is the instruction for class work so confusing and students are being taught at a 200 class level. The discussions are structured to encourage conversation, yet you can only use the materials she provides that seem to lead to a single conclusion.
Courtis is a passionate professor, but the workload is heavy. Lots of reading, discussions, and quizzes weekly. The grading can be tough, but unstuck study helped me stay on top of it all.
tough grader and lots of reading
Overall, the class was fairly easy. The content on the other hand- incredibly disappointing. The readings and lectures were all over the place and outdated. The quizzes were terrible and the questions felt irrelevant. Don't bother reading the textbook chapters because they are rarely referenced.
Mary gave a lot of good feedback to me for each discussion we had, and gave me links to read further when it seemed like I was interested in a certain topic. Archeology was a very interesting course, however a lot of it was based on ancient Egypt(which I was interested in), so make sure that's something your ready to dive into!
Teacher provides material that is overly difficult and inappropriate for a 100-level class. Reading is meant for scientific and academic, archaeology-inclined, not students taking it to fulfill unrelated degree requirements. Discussions and assignments also include wading through verbose material that isn't understandable. Wouldn't take again.
Material overly difficult for a 100 level class. No wonder some people cheat.
I took her 20 years ago and again this term. I really enjoy her classes!
