Tends to work the department for her own good and does not help the music students graduate. Has on occasion specifically told me not to take a class I want to take, and has also told me that I didnt have to take a class I need to graduate.
I agree with the above comment.

Wonderful woman who is VERY interested in the Department. She works hard to make the Department better for students. She has also worked hard to reduce the class load for music majors...how many chairs would do that? You can always go to her for help at any time, she is always willing to help you if you are not a big GOOF!
Nice person, but she doesn't have the capabilities needed of a department chair. Her administrative abilities are definately below par. If you are a major and she is your advisor, double check with University services to be sure you are on the right track to graduating. She's been wrong before.
Very Bad teacher. I had her for Intro to Music. I kept emailing her but did not get any response in time. Sometimes I never got responses at all. She structured the course in a very hap-hazard way. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Took the class via the internet. When she graded assignments it was as if she forgot that this was an INTRO class. Also, she would assign opinion papers and mark off if she didn't agree with your opinion of the musical piece in question. I received a B in this joke of a class- my only non A that semester and I'm a Sr. Chem major. Not cool...
The class was absolutely pointless unless you needed to learn how to use the library or find the counseling offices on campus. I missed one day of class and completed all of my assignments and received a C in the class. Sounds like fair grading to me!!
I took Dr. Blackman's Intro to Music online, and it was a wonderful experience. Not only was she extremely helpful and clear in her instructions, she provided tons of extra credit opportunities. I highly recommend her!
Mrs. Blackman is a good teacher but the class is not easy. If you are looking for an easy A do not take her class. She grades very hard and you have to read the book in order to do well.
i had her for orientation to music. I absolutely love her! i dont know what everyone is talking about..she is so helpful and knows everything there is to know about this campus and graduation requirements! The class was informative, very helpful, and easy!!
Internet class VERY difficult and BORING!!! Way too much outside work for an intro class and too much writing for a non-writing-intensive class. Didn't learn a thing about Music & I loved it all 4 yrs of high school! NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
If you have her class you must attend 3 concerts, do a 10 week listening log, 7 online HARD quizzes, 10 in class writing assignments... it is completely pointless and i hated the class!
Way too involving for an intro course. Everything is about how the music changed over history, which you have to describe in technical terms which are subjective to the listener. NOT RECOMENDED.
Horrible professor, wants students to fail and wants them to hate music. She is impossible to get a hold of, will not explain her requirements, and assigns bogus projects.I failed this class even though I did every assignment the best I could. Took it the next semester with a prof no longer teaching ther and got the highest grade in class, an A.
Overall the teacher wasn't bad yet the class it self was terrible. The only positive thing about the class is doing the listening logs on your own time, which are also the main part of your grade. Barely went and came out with a B- from (basically) the listening logs. NOT RECOMMENDED as a teacher for this class. Too involved like stated above.
Took the class online. It blows. The whole thing is about classical music. Did not learn a thing about popular music. It's not too bad online, but you would probably do just as well with another teacher in a real class.
shes a very bad teacher
the worst teacher ever. she treats this class like its a graduate leval class. do not take her if you do not have to. to much work for an intro class. i would not recommend her to anyone.
This is the WORST class i've been in yet. Incredibly boring, and pointless assignments that the professor goes over with a fine-tooth comb. I seriously regret not dropping this class.
Wonderful professor. Her class changes the way you listen to music. It's not the easiest class in the world, but if you go to class, read the material, and complete the assignments you are going to get an A and learn a lot of useful information about music.
I absolutely hate this class! I have it online and all of the assigments are pointless and tedious. She expects you to have prior knowledge about classical music that is entirely ludacris for an intro class. She is very rude and if she doesn't like the music you pick for your assigments she grades them even harsher.
If you are looking for a cake class DONT take this class. If you want to learn something TAKE THIS CLASS. Teacher is passionate and interested in teaching you something. She makes it fun but has standards that she expects you to meet. You will know much more after this class but you are going to have to work.
Oftenmakes rude and hateful remarks to students. Intro class but expects student to know complicated terms and theory. Majority of grade is based on weekly writings which must be perfect. Requires 3 concert attendances w/detailed reports.Exams very difficult with trick questions, info that is not in lectures. Online class, Thank goodness for Google!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! She assigns irrelevant assignments all the time like interpreting comic strips!! I am a musician and took this class for an easy A but ended up with a headache most of the time!! It's her way or the highway!! I would take Sweeney before I took Blackman again!! AVOID HER!!!! Class is terrible!!!
If you're looking for an easy A, look somewhere else. If you want to LEARN something, this is the class for you. The lectures are interesting and full of stuff that I never knew. Writing assignments short and easy. Only the quizzes were hard. No textbook! My advice: ask questions and use Google. Great class! I would take it again in a heartbeat!
She is not very clear on assignments and nit picks every detail. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy A.
do not take her. period. she is rude and will not help you with questions you have. I have been involved in music since elementary school and I still struggled on every quiz. They are hard and she puts trick questions in there that aren't in the lecture notes. And if you haven't done the writing perfectly, you get a zero.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is rude and does not want to help students. I asked her for my average in the class and her response was that she could not calculate 120+ students and that I should have been concerned earlier in the semester. I make better grades in my actual writing class than I do on her writing assignments. VERY NIT PICKY.
You would think that the Intro class would be what's called an INTRODUCTION! Well it's not and she acts like it's a HONORS music class. You better know everything there is to know about music and much more before you take this class. Very critical and extremely rude!!!
Do not take her! She is so unorganized, it's very hard to keep up. This is supposed to be an intro class, but she definitely doesn't act like it. The quizzes are impossible, she tries to trick you. And on the writing assignments and listening logs, you will get large point deductions if you do any tiny thing wrong. She is VERY rude and arrogant. Sh
I have absolutely no idea how this woman still has a job.
Doesn't co-operate with students well. When U email her she doesnt give you helpful info
Very arrogant. Treats an intro class like we should know the complete span of music from the beginning. Told our class if its not classical its not music and music should be devoid of emotion. DO NOT TAKE this "professor". Overly critical of writing style, more so than ANY English professor Ive ever had.
Don't take this teacher unless you're a music genius! After taking 6 years of piano, and 4 years of chorus, I failed miserably. For an Intro class it was extremely hard...
I am a senior Biology major and have had some really hard classes up to this point. Took intro to music for fun, BIG MISTAKE. I don't think anyone could possibly make this class any harder. The teacher is rude and unpleasant to talk with and emailing her is futile. The writing assignments would make an English major sweat and there are a LOT!
This is not too bad if you study the notes. It's not a easy A, but this ins't an easy subject. It is a college level course people! I found this Professor to be very polite, thorough, & organized. If you need to contact the professor, use D2L not email. She makes this clear on the first week of classes. I found this class very interesting.
I took this class online during the summer and she was very helpful. Open notes quizzes were given each week along with listening logs which were simple. Maybe because I didn't see her in person, it made it easy for me to ask her questions and she saw the effort that I put forth by completing all the assignments. I enjoyed the class.
Dr. Blackman is very nice as a person, but as an advisor her advising abilities are subpar. I heard that back in the day she almost ran the music dept into the ground. Be wary if she is your advisor and keep up with the classes you are required to take.
It's a terrible class if you are a non-music major.(i.e. Have no interest in music other than listening to it.) TAKE HISTORY OF JAZZ!!!
even as an online class, be prepared to work. the directions are incredibly inaccurate, the writing assignments are way too complicated and its very hard to clarify what she wants. her grading on it is even worse since she judges based on her expectation instead of an overall foundation of good english comprehension skills.
This teacher is awful. Treats this like an honors music history class instead of INTRO to music. I'm not even sure if she goes over text entry boxes on exams. An online teacher refuses to use email? Don't take this class. I have been playing piano since I was 5 and was in Band for 9 years and I failed this class. How is she still teaching?
Don't take this class or any into to music at etsu. take into to jazz or theater instead. intro to music is the hardest. this class wasnt bad tho.. pretty simple but to much busy work and some of the homework and quizes can be confusing. most classes were super boring and she treats the class as if its an honors class instead of an intro class
Took Intro to Art Music online with Dr. Blackman. She is very hard to understand, does not make things clear, and her assignments are ridiculous. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take this course, especially online and with her. She might be great in the classroom, but she is rude online. Her eBook is ridiculous as well. Can't recommend.
Do not take this professor for anything. She is completely lacking in ethics and integrity. She gave us incorrect information for a concert and would not extend the deadline. When several complained she insulted the students and then deleted the discussion board thread. Her book was worthless, her assignments were tedious and she was rude.
Dr. Blackman's class is terrible. Take any other professor but her. She is very rude and she is not helpful whatsoever. You're required to watch operas that last 3 hours. Her book, which is an ebook, absolutely sucks. Her quizzes are also ridiculous. Many complaints have been given to her by students, and she will not help them at all.
I have taken several college classes and this was by far the worst. The professor is not helpful and very sarcastic. She speaks down to the students on public forums. The book required, that she wrote, is unhelpful and lacks information. This class would make a first time college student very discouraged.
Stay far far away from this particular professor. The amount of work is comparable to an upper level course and if you fall behind you should drop the course immediately. The professor is helpful in her responses but she will rip you apart for the slightest of grammatical errors. Expect an enormous & time consuming course load.
This professor is VERY VERY RUDE. DO NOT take her she will talk down to you and belittle you if you do not understand. Unfair quizzes. Grades her listening logs as if we have listened for these kind of things our whole life. We are not stupid do not make us feel stupid. id this at all cost.
This teacher is the worst I have ever had. Do not take her class if you are not a musician. She will judge you more by your grammar then you music experience. She is very rude on her assignment feedback, almost making fun of your lack of music understand. I felt left behind on her class. Again avoid this class if you can. Her book totally sucks.
NOT AN EASY A. I have been involved with music since I was 8. I can't imagine taking this course without prior knowledge. Quizzes are HARD even though they are open book. I did not find her to be rude but I would not taker her again. She is my lowest grade and I have had a 4.0 all through college and high school.
I have never rated a professor, but this time I felt like I should just to hopefully save everyone else from this horrible professor. She is very particular and rude when grading simple writing assignments. On top of that, she doesn't even respond to your emails on time. Save yourself the trouble and don't even think about taking this professor.
This class is totally ridiculous if you have no music history. She is very rude when you ask her questions. Very strict on grading. The quizzes are open book but half the answers cannot be found in the book. Take another teacher if possible for Fine Arts.
This class isn't an easy A if that is what you are looking for. It isn't easy but you do learn from this class. She is a tad strict with grading but helpful if you need it.
The professor's grading scale was tough, but her expectations were clearly set out from day one in the syllabus. Lectures were delivered online via documents written by Dr Blackman with sound recordings for examples. Participate, give appropriate effort for a college level course and attend concerts as required--a good grade will result.
Goes above and beyond, in helping students succeed. Fantastic at explaining things, without making it spoon fed.
She goes out of her way to help people understand. Very fun class.
Very enjoyable class! She has a great sense of humor and brilliant music skills.
She will make you work for it, but will help you the whole way. She even records the class for review and is very patient with questions.
This is not an easy A, but if you pay attention and put forth the effort, you should make an A.
I took her online class, even visited main campus a few times and she was still not a big help at all. I was warned not to take her, and I should have listened.
Unnecessarily strict.
She's a nice enough human being, just an awful professor. AVOID if you can! She definitely assigns way too much homework for a gen ed and doesn't understand when the class time is met that we have to go. She only gives feedback on listening logs (which is minimal at best) and will not review a test with you. Hard to reach out to. DON'T DO IT
Tests are very hard and she expects way to much for an intro course. She expects you to be a music pro in her class and asks things she doesn't teach you
Do not take her class unless you are a music major because she definitely doesn't realize this is a gen ed. She expects you to devote countless hours to this class. You have to watch multiple 2 hour operas on top of reading, taking quizzes, writing assignments, and listening logs each week.
The book was required and boring. She wrote the book and then gave awful video lectures that went with the it. The music choices are great! Tests are very hard, she grades even harder, and it's almost like it's for grads. If you have to take music don't take it online! Homework!? Don't get me started. If you need help... Don't look to her for it.
Very critical but as long as you turn in all your work you'll get an A.
This class was gen ed for me, but she was a great professor and I definitely recommend taking it online. You listen to at least one song and do a short writing a week. There were 3 tests and 3 concerts you have to go to. And extra credit if you need it. There was a bit too much effort involved for a gen ed, but definitely an easy A.
I took her online and it was a little overwhelming at times. I needed this class for my fine art elective but she treats the class as if you're a senior going for a music major. With that being said its do-able if you put the work in. Not an easy A though.
I've been a musician for several years, and know most of the terminology for the course. Blackman takes the subject way too seriously, doesn't grade fairly at all, and is entirely incapable of seeing herself in the wrong. I completed assignments per her instructions and received zeros without explanation even after challenging her on it.
I enjoyed music until I took this class.
Dr. Blackman is proof that anyone can obtain a PhD and write a book.
She treats this class as if you have nothing better to do and you are a music major. If you're not a music major don't take this as part of your gen. ed. requirements!
Typical selfish ETSU professor. Talks about herself often but doesnt care about students. She rather see you fail than help you. She will take weeks to respond to you. Completely self centered and takes herself too seriously
She wont try to help you at all. This is a class that made me feel like I should give up on life. She doesnt want to see her students succeed and will go out of her way to not help you!
Took the class online as a gen ed requirement, and regret every minute of it. Super nitpicky about grammar and will count off if she doesn't like the way you worded something. 15% of your grade comes from 3 concert reports, but if you work 5 days a week, you won't be able to make it to the ones on campus. Off campus options are usually far away.
This is an intro class but she treats us like music majors. Sometimes I think she's an English professor based on the way she grades papers. She expects us to come in the class knowing all things music. I would never recommend this class to anyone. It has made me hate music and give up completely.
Loved Dr. Blackman for Arts and Ideas II! She made the lectures interesting and fun. She was always looking for ways to get us involved in the arts around campus.
Do not take this professor unless you are a music major. I played in band for 7 years and still did not meet her expectations. Her criticism is very harsh and doesn't explain her feedback at all. This was one of my gen ed. requirements and I wish I would have chosen a different class.
I have been in orchestra for 13 years and this class has kicked my butt. Half of the things on the test and in assignments she gives are not even in the "book" she wrote herself. The book is very hard to use. Her assignments are graded very harshly and she doesnt even give feedback sometimes.
One of the worst professors Ive had in my college career. She grades very harshly, and usually does not give clear feedback about the grade she gives. She also grades very difficult on grammar, even though the grammar in the book she wrote herself is pretty awful. This is an intro level class and she treats it like an advanced music major class.
She prides herself on being smarter than her students. Does not want to help you learn. I was in band, chorus, and attended a performing arts school for five years and this online class was still gruesome.
Does not want to help you at all. Her feedback is demeaning, making you feel stupid. She expects you to know understand everything like she does with little explanation or examples. I was in band for 5 years and still struggled with this. Not to mention she has not updated her lectures since 2013..
If you do not have a musical background do not take this class. It is so difficult and you have to teach yourself everything. She does offer extra credit at the end of the semester which was helpful.
Very harsh with her feedback on any and all of your work. Undermines you and the way you perceive things and does very little to nothing to actually help when you ask for it. Please spare yourself and do not take this course especially if you have no prior musical knowledge. Also definitely do not take this course online!!
This is probably the hardest online class I've taken so far. I have been in an orchestra for eight years, took private lessons with University directors, and was thinking about a music minor but not now. ETSU should be ashamed. This is more of an upper level music class and not gen ed. She doesn't even care. Don't take this class with her.
Considering I grew up around music my entire life and was in choir, I thought an "intro" to music class wouldn't be too bad. I was completely wrong! Not only is it my hardest class this semester, but I have never felt so belittled by a professor. Not only does her comments make you feel stupid, but the required book that she wrote is no help at all
I was in band for 8 years and took this class for an easy A. It is not very "intro to music" at all. If you don't have any previous knowledge for music you will fail. She also makes you feel stupid in her feedback.
taking this class online was the worst idea ive ever had. she grades tough on grammar and how you write your reports, and her feedback will make you feel stupid. she expects you to know all about music in an intro to music class, and her textbook is absolutely useless (and full of grammatical errors). avoid this class!
This professor had extremely high expectations and standards that were often unreachable in regards to class and assignments. Teaching of the content was often difficult to understand. Not to mention, she graded very harshly with little to no explanation. Would not recommend taking a class with her unless you want to be confused the whole time.
She is just awful and rude. She doesn't like to help on assignments and she grades really harsh on grammar or if she doesn't like the way you did an assignment. Her feedback basically belittles you. The test are really hard you can use your notes and the book but they don't help at all because she wrote the book. Don't take this class.
I have never taken the course of such an awful and unprofessional woman in my life. Her comments would belittle you and provide no meaningful or helpfull information. She makes Fletcher from the movie Whiplash look like a saint. And she grades HEAVYILY on grammar, so much that the grammar matters more than the assignment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This class is easy if you've already taken many years of band classes, but for the non-music student, definitely prepare to buckle in. This class is definitely on the "take it only if you have to" list however, the textbook was worthless, and the tests had questions about things that were not in the book and had nothing to do with music.
Blackman did not provide clear grading criteria for nearly every single one of her assignments. Upon turning anything in, it was a gamble: Is this sufficient enough? She uses the same vague rubric for every assignment, often alternating her standards when grading. Also, her textbook is messy, and I did not find much of the content to be relevant.
