Very informative class. Willing to work to help you in times of need or to better understand material. She is another great sociology prof. You can tell that she cares and loves what she studys. Shes very busy though because shes department chair of soc.

I wasn't sure about her at first. She seemed a little showy but when we really started she really made me think, not only about the topic but the theories and the assertions in society. Looks at everything, and she uses the same approch with students.

Her class was very interesting and she is very knowledgeable on the subject. My only recommendation...do NOT take this class as a night class...3 hours of her is a little rough!

Just go to class and read the coursepack! She gives a pool of questions for midterm and final, so its easy to plan ahead of time. I loved the class, she's very intelligent and a great prof

She's tuff, but fair and very easy to get along with. I learned a ton and worked my butt off, but had a good time doing it. Highly recommended.

good class, great prof. keep up on the readings and take notes from her "mid term outline" and "final outline"...it'll really help when tests come up. papers were easy, quizzes were a little difficult. overall, i def. reccommend deYoung!

Great prof. Very knowledgeable about sociology,and the class is reasonable for it being one I took for a theme. Go to class & take notes because that is where most of the test questions are from. Study the review sheets for the reading and you should be good. She will always help if you need it. 2 papers & 3 exams. Not too hard.

Phenomenal Lady. She knows her stuff. She has plenty of first hand experience and her personal anecdotes are great. She has a great sense of humor. Take her class and you won't regret it.

What a great class! 3 hours flies by b/c the material is interesting and de Young is a superb teacher. Its not an easy class, but you will learn a lot.

After I graduated she helped me get a position with a child abuse agency in England! I was so well prepared for the work b/c of her class. She keeps in touch too. I've never had a better professor, or one who was so willing to help me achieve my goals.

prof. deyoung was awesome! her class was structured in a really easy way and it made for little confusion. the topics were interesting, she definitely knows her stuff, and goes out of her way to help you if you need it. i am glad i took this class and wish i could take more classes with her in the future!

If you can get into this professionals class, consider it an honor. Dr. de Young is a joy to interact with. No question you will learn!!!!

Lottsa info in a 6 week class, but DeYoung is really interesting and a genuinely decent person. She´s the best prof in the SOC department, by far.

Such a beautiful person. A wonderful teacher who is passionate about her work. Shes funny, friendly, helpful. keeps class interesting. take her for every soc class possible.

Very good prof. The class was interesting and enjoyable. She was also quite funny. My only complaint is her misrepresentation of the concepts of codependency and one's "inner child". Some of the work done in this field is obviously quackery, and sadly, that's the part she chose to discuss in class. Either way, I would recommend her.

Prof. DeYoung is a wonderful teacher and she loves a joke! Her tests are multiple choice and she usually throws in an essay or two. She doesn't do email so make sure you take advantage of her office hours if you are having difficulties.

It is hard to prepare for her exams. There is so much to study that it is hard to focus on one particular aspect for the midterm and final for the essays. Requires alot of memorization and regurgetation

If you work hard in her class she rewards you. Also make a fun connection with her before you start asking for favors. It helps. She is a great lady and a wonderful teacher but as all teachers experience she has had many students take adavantage of her so her response is not always great during office hours.

This class was fairly interesting, I just had a hard time staying awake in the class because she's a monotone speaker and it was an a.m. class. She is a wonderful lady and genuinely cares about her students. Read the course packet articles because they're useful for discussion, which she really enjoys your participation in.

Excellent prof and class. She knows her stuff and is smart, funny and kind. I showed up, did the work, studied for exams and got an A. Learned a ton about child maltreatment. Sad at times, but fascinating class.

Really great professor! Her lectures are extremely interesting and informational. I learned a lot and actually retained it. If you are looking for an interesting class with a good professor, then I would definately say take this class.

Best class ever! Time flew by and that's something in a 6 week spring course. This was way outside my major, but I enjoyed every minute of it and I learned a lot. DeYoung rocks!

Terrific class. Prof. is knowledgeable, funny and really enthusiastic about the course material. Not a real easy class and you will have required readings that she tests on, but she does provide a study guide. No complaints from me. I would take another class with her without a problem.

She's a great teacher! If you go to class you will do really well. She gives a lot of information during class so if you miss class you end up missing a lot of important test info. No books!

Very helpful when needed. Lectures very informational and interesting. You'll have to know the readings she assigns for the exams, but she gives a study guide for each one. Exams are NOT cumulative. Wouldn't recommend missing class though, you'll miss a lot of info that will be on the exam. Would definitely take her class again.

Prof DeYoung is wonderful! Child Maltreatment is a sad subject, but she gave so much insight into the topic! She is EXTREMELY knowledgeable in this field. I loved every minute of this class. This class helped figure out what I wanted to do with my life! I read about 75% of what was assigned, lestened in class, and got an A. YOU SHOULD TAKE HER!!!!!

Tough class but very interesting. She knows her stuff thats for sure. Also knows how to lighten things up every noe and then. I really recommend her.

Awesome professor! She makes the class so interesting, and she is rather easy. She provides you with study guides to go along with the readings, and she gives great lectures; therefore, tests really aren't that bad if you pay attention and do the readings! Great class and professor!

Take Mary!! Her lectures are very interesting!! You will want to go to class (and you need to to do well on tests). Make sure you read the textbook as well because a lot of exam questions are from it. 3 papers and they are very straight forward and simple. She really wants to get to know her students and is a joy to have as a professor.

Good professor, but very challenging. Grades are based on 3 papers and 2 exams that are made up of 5 essays. She was forced to give extra credit on the first exam because so many people failed it. I learned a lot, but it was honestly the most challenging class I've ever had.

Tuff prof but very helpful. Explains things really clearly. I learned more in one semester with her then any other class.

I was a dual major and the capstone in my other major (CJ) was a major waste of time. But the SOC capstone with Prof. De Young was great. Very challenging. Wanted you to show off what you've learned. Very helpful. Great experience and nice way to say goodbye to old GVSU.

Great professor. Probably one of the best I've ever had. Tough grader but very helpful and always willing to meet you outside of class. There isn't formal participation grades but she will raise or lower your grade at her discretion depending on your participation. Highly recommend her if you want to learn a lot.

Professor Deyoung is great! The class is challenging, but so interesting. The way she discusses the material will keep you very intrigued. Quizzes are pretty difficult, but if you study the right material, you will do fine. Plus, she drops your worst one. It's pretty important to attend every class.

Great class. Lots of reading. Interactive case study was interesting project. Midterm and final,all essay. She is cool, smart and funny. I recommend it.

She made the class much more interesting and was pretty funny as well! Make sure to knowfill out the study guides she gives and you will be fine on the testsquizzes.

The prof was a great woman. I respected her a whole lot. Her lectures for this class are very interesting and the notes are used for the test. there is a lot of out of class readings and if you dont read outside of class you wont pass.
