good teacher...lots of memorization...study in advance for lab practicals!!!!
study for lab tests, she hands out notes, final questions come from previous tests
A really good teacher, very clear. This class is HARD! A lot of memorization, make sure you know what you are getting into before signing up. You will be studying at least 3 hours a day 5 days a week just to pass.
good nice teacher overall and explains well. Study pass , study harder get an A, dont study fail.
shes a good teacher and likes what she does. I get an A on every test aslong as you go over the notes and cd.
She expects way too much from her students. Expects you to study atleast 4 to 5 hours daily. Lab quizes everyday, sometimes 2 a day. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
Wow, do not take this class. She is extremely demanding and far from flexible. Expect to do your labs at home because very little class time is given. The quizzes are often unannounced, frequent, and difficult, the exams are even harder.
There will be a lab every class period except for the one before the test day. There will be a quiz every class period quizzing you on the lecture and lab from the one before. I don't feel like she has enough patience for students. She will not answer your lab questions because she wants you to THINK about it. Some of them ARE HARD!!~
Half of the class dropped out after the third test...think about it. Her extra credit is way too much just for 5 points! You don't even know if you WILL get those 5 points if you do it!
SUPER HARD!!! I am an A student and worked harder than I ever have to barely get a B. She explains things well in lecture but gets annoyed with questions....will not answer any lab questions because that is "giving you answers"...i would take a differnet teacher
Learn alot more than I thought I would in a nonmajors course. Made the material interesting. Lots of labs. Has very high standards.
Hard but FAIR. I will probably make a C because I have a chronic illness which made me miss alot of class. She worked with me more than any of my other teachers. Very approachable outside of class. She posts lecture notes and powerpoints in WebCT which helped alot. She makes the information relevant.
she was super hard. labs everyday no exceptions. wouldn't lets us leave after test. barely helped. degraded her students. half of the people dropped. i wouldn't recommend it.
I thought I hated science, but I really liked this course. You do labs in groups of 4. You take a little quiz every day, but those grades helped me make a B. Her powerpoints are good and the labs are a lot of fun. I wish she taught the other course as well.
This class is only for people who are willing to make an effort. Attendance is not mandatory but without coming to class you will completely be lost. Everyday you have a quiz which seems hard but actually helps you out a lot. She has a powerpoint for each lecture and explains the material really well.
very organized and always does what she plans to do. Plus, she's very fair in her gradings and testings
Mrs. Durant is a good teacher she covers everything completely. All lectures are power point and you get a quiz each day. Also you do a lab every day and lab quizzes. I passed the class with a C but I am older and a returning student so this class was hard for me but I took it over the summer a lot of info to obtain in a short period of time.
she was super hard. her tests usually has more than 4 answers, and a lot of tricky questions. After the tests, we still had lectures. Lab practicals were panic. She degraded students. I got an A in Biol 1. But I tried my best only got a B in her class. If I can take it over, I will choose another teacher.
By far the worst decision I ever made was to take her for a 5 wk summer session. U were either taking a lab quiz 1st thing every morning or a 15 minute quiz at the assessment center everyday or other day, worrying about her major test that incl short ans or listening to her lectures delivered at warp speed. She reminds me of the energizer bunny.
It's a hard class. You must spend lots and lots of time studying to get an A. She doesn't give review sheet for exam (exam covers everythings you learn in class). Don't take this class with this pro. if your major is not Bio. It's very hard to get an A. Be careful in your choice. If you don't work at all (only studying), you can take it.Goodluck!
I was dreading this course because Ihave never liked science. She made it interesting. Outside of class she is very caring... and has a fun sense of humor
Mrs. Durant is an amazing teacher. She's very helpful, and if you ask her for help, she's more than willing to help you until you get it. The material is hard, you have to study. If you do badly, it's your fault, not hers.
THE MOST CHALLENGING CLASS EVER!! Physically draining. Too much lecture time and no time for labs(everyday).too many quizzes and long tests. Questions are tricky and not clear Shes never satisfied with my answers on lab questions. You have to study like 4 hours everyday TOO DEMANDING. DONT TAKE HER. I have a 3.7 GPA and struggling with this class
Good teacher. Answers questions when asked. She does seem to go through the powerpoints fairly fast but you can always review them after class. This class is hard!! If you tend to procrastinate alot i do not recommend this class. The questions on her tests are tricky and i was struggling to hang on with a B!
Fun, fun class! Mrs. Durant is interesting and knowledgable. You must work hard to make an A. Not everything came easy, so I had to study alot at home. She tries to stick to her schedule for lecture so if she has to go in to lab time, she will. Be careful where you sit because your neighbor may be you lab partner. Got blessed with great ones!
Bad things: This teacher will give you ulsars.
This teacher is very difficult. She does not seem to mind for half of her class to drop. Be prepared to study!! will keep you over class time
One of the most sincere professors out there. Haven't had a caring instructor out there like her yet. This is not to say, however, that her class came easy. Biology in general requires alot of studying. Although my grade is not what i wanted in to be (b+) she was an excellent teacher.
This instructor expects you to take quizes every day. She further spends 15-25 minutes talking during labs and wasting valuable lab time. Although I've got an A grade, her class is too demanding. Seriously, if she teaches honors, why the hell is she teaching this for intro-biology students. No logical sense there.
40% Exam, 15% Quiz A, 10% Quiz B, 15% lab reports, 20% Final Exam. Possibility of making an A, statistically speaking you got .2% chance of making an A. Imagine doing 4 categories plus 2 more categories. Thus you will end up with a C, or B. If GPA is your high priority, its best to stay away from this professor, she uses Scott.Freeman Books(unclear
Stress is the number one factor in depression. This instructor's syllabus is filled with stresses, if you don't want to be depressed, I highly suggest staying away from her. You don't want to head down that dark path of lonely existence (i.e., study, study, eat, sleep, sh!t, study, eat, sleep, take test, study). Sounds depressing enough?
Glad I will not have to take her again. It is one hell of a nightmare that I woke up from, and now that it's over... I'm ready to move on with my life. Thank goodness.
She is brillant and one of the greatest teachers I have ever had!
Okay, here's the deal with this lady. Every single class is already scheduled with a certain powerpoint lecture, lab assignment, lab quiz, etc. Methodical to the max. Offers some extra credit opps. If you can get in the rhythm of things, take tons of notes, and study hard for tests, an A can happen. The final is BRUTAL!
This class is a nightmare. Mrs. Durant is a very nice lady. But if you care about your GPA then BEWARE!!! Her assignments and grading are just very tough! There's 5 tests plus a final and each test has close to 100 questions(multiple choice) but her questions are worded in such a tricky way and that's why no one passes her tests!
Grate Prof. She is tuff but fair. You will have to work ,but she will help you if you ask. Science classes are hard so know what you are getting into. I give Professor Durant my highest recommendation as I have not only taken her in one class but two.
great professor
She is an amazing teacher and phenominal person! If you show up to class and take notes and actually study you will be fine! Make sure you listen during lecture and use your lab CD and angel study guides! If you are a good student you will not have any trouble getting an A! If you are a slacker don't take her! She is AMAZING and FAIR!
This class is VERY hard, especially if you don't have 4 people in your group. I had 2 in my group, and I am staying up until 2 in the morning almost every night or after class for 3+ hours trying to get all the work she assigns done. Also-- all the questions on the exams and labs are worded really tricky, you will be lucky if you receive an A.
Hard class, you have a quiz every class, then lab. When lab is over you leave until you finish it. After you take a test you are expected to go to lab. Test are near impossible. I spent most of the class looking at my watch for it to be over.
I just took her for summer 1 and she is an awesome teacher! She explains things very well and is very helpful in understanding the material. I would say make sure you go to class everyday and read the online notes she post. It will be very helpful for the test. overall class was Good! :)
Very nice! but there is a quiz EVERYDAY you walk into class.if your 5 mins late, you miss the quiz and get a 0,and make ups are not possible. No extra credit. Powerpoints are posted, thats a plus! But each exam that is important, is worded soooooo tricky!! its impossible to pass, the words on the exams are NOT what you are learning in class! HORRIBLE
She explains things really well and really has a passion for us to learn. If you are serious about being a science major and learning, THEN TAKE HER! It is not an easy course you do have to study a lot and there is a lot of work, but you will learn!
She did these quiz things like 3 times a week--waste of time and an easy way to screw up your grade. She lectures like she's talking to middle school kids but then her tests are crazy hard. If you've found yourself stuck in this class, study the chapter material every day--cannot cram for these tests.
I am a Bio major. I took it at UH and failed miserably. Durant is an awesome instructor. She just finished the info on cellular respiration. Made it crystal clear. Wish I had taken the course with her the first time. Her passion for bio is contagious. :)
Very hard class. I am a straight A student and didn't finish this class with an A. It requires way too much time. She will keep you after her class is done, gives a reading quiz and lab quiz everyday both online now and also online activities which can be tough. Always lectures during lab times. She is rude to her students when they ask question.
Great Teacher. If you need help she will go over and beyond your expectations. Test are very hard and she does not give out points. You will have to earn every single one. Overall great teacher if you are willing to work.
Professor Durant was an incredible teacher. If she sees that you really put in effort to do all of her work, and it's a lot, then she will return the favor and reopen quizzes and things if you accidentally miss the due date for them. Her lectures directly coincide with her tests so pay attention. She's always available to answer questions if needed
Just finished the Summer I semester.. If you plan on taking this class during the summer expect at least four to five assignments due after class everyday; reading quizzes, lab reports, activities, pre-labs and lab quiz. You cannot slack off in her class, don't be late, make sure to do all assignments. Very clear lectures, great teacher!
If you really want to pass the class study study study. Test are based on the notes that she makes you write, so if you fail the test is because you didn't went over your notes. She has a good passion towards biology which made it a very interesting course. I'll take her again if I could. Quiz every day also.
She does know a lot however, she doesn't care to make sure YOU know a lot. Quiz every day at the start of the class. Her tests are hard and are worded so tricky. She hates being asked questions and can be VERY rude. She may have a lot of knowledge but she is NOT a good teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER!
I felt study guides should have been given seeing how all the test are multiple choice. She wouldnt be a choice for me. I had to drop the class I didnt want a bad grade.
Mrs. Durant is a phenomanal professor. The class is laborious and tedious, however, but that should be expected for any science or math course. As long as you take notes during class and study them you can and will make an A on her tests.
Professor Durant is a great teacher. She's very informative and knowledgeable. Her lectures are clear and concise. There's a lot of information to cover and learn (do not just memorize). She encourages students to take notes, be on time for class, study extra hours at home, ask questions, and form study groups. Grades are earned, not given.
Take notes it is very very important to take good notes. Try not to miss a class you will have to daily grades of zero. Overall it was a good class.
DO NOT TAKE!!! Worst Professor I ever Had ! SOOOO RUDE to her students for no reason. That was super annoying. If you didn't participate she calls you out rudely and makes comments. She's very boring in her lectures. READ READ READ *if you take her* she expects you to be WAY ahead of her lectures. VERY VERY hard class! and shes not nice!
Her class was very lecture heavy. Gives a lot of notes. Studying everyday is key to passing her class.
You have to work for your grade. Pay attention to all lectures and take good notes. There are labs every day and you are graded with the group assigned. Chapter quizzes are due before every class, online homework, and lab quizzes. Study! Study! Study! And you will pass.
Pretty much your typical Bio II professor. Every bio class is gonna make you work for your grade. 5 exams, lab practicals (which are easy if you review the software once). Labs every day (none are really hard tbh), online homework every week , as long as you take notes, read the lecture slides at home, and read from the etext you'll do great.
I can not pass my class just because she is so hard and give us a lot of question and she wants us too much attention and she doesn't explain a lot just read of her power points.
I took Professor Durant for 1406 and 1407, I love her lectures she explains the material well). If I had any questions I just asked her and she would explain it until I understood. You do have to work hard for your grade. This is Biology for STEM careers you need to know this material. I would take her again if she taught other subjects. Love Her.
Overall, nice and tidy in my opinion. Be conscious on asking questions; don't argue as she'll cut anyone off due to lecture time. Among numerous labs and quizzes, showing up on time to class is essential to passing. Anyone with a minimal attention span may struggle from the long lectures and possible difficulty in understanding the information.
Do not recommend this professor. She lectures forever and half of the class falls asleep while she just reads power points.
Smart mouth, heavy and boring lectures!
Shes very rude at times teachers non-majors course as if it were for majors. We had a hurricane for goddness sake refused to give dual credit. The one extra credit given was only 4 pts with nearly 16 problems. Lecture are boring, always goes over the allotted time for the class. No student/teacher interaction. Was one of the worst classs .
Great teacher. Download her lecture outlines, highlight and take notes. As long as you study her notes and look at the lab cd link for lab you should do fine. You will have to work for this class but paying attention in lecture is the most important part. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. She is very sweet and caring.
Luckily she was nice to me, but I notice she is rude to students. Very fast paced and put the dumbest things on the test. It will ask you stuff like how many yrs ago was the Cambrian explosion when she makes you learn hard af things and then only puts 1 question over it. Don't fall behind, read, take notes, this isn't an easy class. no breaks.
Doable. I wouldn't do it again though. DO YOUR EXTRA CREDIT! it will save your grade. quiz and lab almost every day. Tests have 100 questions and the final has 200!! Lot's of lecturing. I learn by hearing so it was a fine choice for me. Her attitude is OK. Not for people who are easily provoked. Did I make it? Yes. Was it easy? No.
Professor Durant is a good teacher. She is a professor that really helps her students think and not just come to class to come. Her test are a bit tricky, but she does push the students to learn the material. Her class is a bit hard, but if you push yourself to learn, you should do fine.
if you miss one class its 3 zeros. She gives a quiz at the start of each class. She can be late, but if the students are late she complains and calls students out for simply going to the restroom. She knows her BIO but no one wants to put up with a professor that treats students like children. No review for exams. no make ups. GET LAB Book
She yells & argues with students during class. She is also very inconsistent with her classroom policies. Don't take her. Simple. Under any circumstance.
Durant is a great person and if you speak with her 1 on 1 you will see how kind she is BUT When it comes to grading she is TOUGH & sometimes gives the wrong grade, Her mistake. This class takes up 2 classes worth of time. If you have all the time in the world take this course. Way too much work! No study guides for tests. Whats on test? Everything!
Not a good person or teacher. I do not understand how she has kept her job for so long. I wouldn't suggest her to my worst enemies.
If you don't apply yourself, then dont take this class. To pass you must pay attention during lecture, & study the power points and outlines given during class. Go over CD and lab manual to recognize what you're being tested over. The more you review, the better the outcome on your tests. No homework, just prelabs due at the beginning of class.
She's a tough grader and she takes a very long time to explain something but other than that the lady is very sweet and helps you when you need help. If you study her powerpoint and listen when she lectures you'll be fine.
Wrote the worst lab manual ever
Very sweet person. She does a good job of teaching the course but some knowledge of biology is required to keep up. If you go to office hours and participate she will be very flexible with you. Homework is due BEFORE lecture day which is kinda weird.
Don't rely just on her powerpoints, she draws/writes on the whiteboard a lot!! If you miss class, that's -20 points for the day (lab quiz and lab). Ran out of time a lot, so most of the labs were rushed. Lab quizzes were pretty easy if you paid attention in lab and review before class starts. Tests were straight forward if you actually study
She's rude and kept calling us (the class) dumb Millenials. She's great at explaining things and has great analogies; however, her persona isn't something to admire. She threw a marker at me, and then defended herself by saying that I should have looked harder for it.
If you love being made fun of and love being belittled, she's perfect for you! Love taking quizzes at the start of every class? She's your gal! If you love being assumed you're dumb because your young, sign up ASAP!
I don't know how she has a bad review unless you don't put in the effort. Biology will never be an easy A. She is the sweetest person, funny, and explains things SO well. Her exams are right from her lectures and she is very clear on all expectations. Plenty of graded work to balance exam grades. She is a really great professor and very very smart!
Lots of lectures, unable to review failed material, assignment overload. Way to much diggin in for a non science major Ik plenty of people that have dropped or failed this class including myself I have taken her twice with a different teacher in between and the other teacher wasnt nearly as hard as her. If u work as well she is def not a good choi
Literally worst professor I have ever had. I want to drop the class so bad but I cant no more. I have never had such a rude professor before until she came. If you want to pass the class, I beg do not take her. She does not care for her students. Her tests are the worst ever, I study for them but it doesnt help. She is so hard on grading too!
Heck yah, the course is hard. It's for BIO majors. If your plans are medical school, get use to it. Her lectures are thorough, lots of study material online: powerpoints, lecture recordings, and she does biweekly online tutorials. Lab is done in teams. Apply yourself and you'll make good grades. Don't and you fail. Welcome to college.
Science is NOT my thing, but this class was my favorite. Webex tutorials very helpful, useful info that I can use in my life. She shares stories & tricks for learning material. Labs are fun, but 2 per week. Lab quizzes are easy. Exams are hard but fair. Xtra credit is available. Prof is passionate, understanding, flexible with due dates.
I am a grandmother, taking classes so I can be a social worker. This is an online class and I am not good with computers! Ms. Durant is patient, understanding, answers emails quickly. She does tutorials which explain the material and how to do the online labs. It's like being there in class. I wasn't sure if I could do it, but I'm making a B!
As someone whose favorite subject is biology, I can say she definitely expanded that. She provides a lot of helpful study materials like powerpoints, lecture recordings as well as biweekly online meetings/tutorials. Most of the labs are done as teams. The bigger quizzes/exams are proctored. Biology is tough but as long as you study you'll do good.
She is great at giving lectures, your saving grace will be being able to listen and concentrate. The problem for me was her test, having a webcam while online testing.
If you want to keep your sanity dont take her.. prelabs/lab work will take up most of your week, tests are hard (even if you study like crazy), she degrades students in lectures, doesnt respond quickly to important emails or sometimes not at all. Bio is just memory so not super hard but this professor will make you hate Bio.
Professor Mary is passionate about her teachings. Biology is an incredible field and she displays her love for the field. Nevertheless, get ready to put in the work for this course if you are going into the science field. Prof. Mary cares about preparing students. She gives plenty of extra credit. Put in the work, study, and you will pass!
Gives us work to do from a textbook that doesn't cover everything we get quizzed on. Not only that, but the quizzes aren't even important, as she gives us poorly worded Powerpoints and lectures to go off of and gives us exams on those instead of the things we learned from the book. Biology is already hard enough, she made it all the harder
I don't understand why the negative reviews here, those are for the students who doesn't like to study (no offense) but Ms. Durant is a kind teacher, she cares for us and teach great. true all the class period is all about labs and quizzes but hey, they are fun
Online course was TEDIOUS. Information in her powerpoints was scattered or blocked by other information. Her directions regarding how to do classwork was confusing or didn't make sense. Exams are tightly timed and quizzes are 10 minutes for 10 questions. Homework wasn't too hard but good luck finding missing information from lectures/powerpoints
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO STUDY, I study so hard and barely passed, the labs take up all week(if someone on your team does not do the work it will affect your grade) and there is a 3 part exam for each of the 4 units. the final is a 4 part final each with 50 questions and all exams is monitored via WEBCAM
Professor Durant is a good lecturer and professor. She is passionate about what she teaches, and enjoys teaching others the values and the greatness of biology. She is, however, a tough professor to take. She takes very seriously her courses and material, and does not expect her students to twiddle their thumbs, but to learn well the material.
Extremely heavy workload. First day in class and was already expected to complete a couple homework assignments on prelabs that we vaguely went over. Did not let us leave at the time class was supposed to end. The reviews are no joke. Beware of this professor. Already giving students attitude about things. She cuts absolutely no slack. worst class.
worst professor ive ever come across. rude and extremely judgemental. listen to bad reviews, find different professor. will need 20+ hours a week for studying. she never let us go on time. she kept us for 1 hr+ after the class was over. if you leave she will put you on the spot for doing so. incredibly rude. she treats us like high school students
Professor Durant made her class difficult so we would understand the content. Do not take this class if you don't like to study. I studied for the majority of this semester. She expects you to study and know what the topic is about. USE HER OUTLINES. Labs are straight forward, but please complete the quizzes and pre-labs.
If you're planning to do pre-med or any other biology-related field, Prof. Durant is the way. She does not "teach for a test", instead she teaches in a way that makes sure you comprehend the material. She sets you up to have a good foundation for later courses involving biology. If you do not care to ask questions or participate you'll struggle.
She's really awesome. Despite the fact that the material is hard, she has help sessions twice a week, to clear up any misunderstandings and difficulties. Yes you will have to do you part, but if you feel like you don't understand, please don't hesitate to show up to help sessions. She will help you!! I went from a 70 to an A because of this.
Loved this class. Professor Durant makes lectures and lab super interesting. This class is not about memorizing is about learning and that is the way to go if you wanna pass. She is really nice takes her time to get into detail during lecture that is why attendance is important. Class requires ALOT OF STUDYING so no procrastinating. Great Class.
Took online course. two labs open up a week with the first being due 36 hours after it opens. Assigned lab groups because why not make this class more tedious and obnoxious. Proctored exams, tightly timed quizzes. Each exam is in 3 parts. There are significantly easier science classes that don't take up near as much time at Lonestar. Terrible class
Typically do not genuinely dislike professors, but she forces online students to be in assigned lab groups that have to meet twice a week, doesn't unlock assignments until 2 days before they're due, and refuses to record help sessions for those who cannot make it to them. If you're doing online classes for the flexibility steer clear of this woman.
I took this professor for both my biology courses and I love her! Not gonna lie this class is pretty difficult itself but the Professor provided students with study guides, lecture recordings, and help sessions to help students study for exams. You CANNOT procrastinate for this class you must be able to stay on top of your work to pass.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE!!!
Durant demands 110% dedication, requiring 4 hours of studying daily. Lectures/Labs WILL run over time, and you will be asked to stay until she is done. Lectures will never be complete, rushed 3min summaries for 1hr lectures are guaranteed. Participation is encouraged but leads to rambling, creating a stressful and challenging learning environment.
Bio major, but hate bio now. Always runs over time and has hmwk everyday. Labs(with no time in class to finish report) and quizzes every week or day. Rude and makes you feel bad for not answering the (?) right. 100(?s) per exam covering multiple chapters. Acts like her class is superior and that this is the only class you're taking. Study for hours
I hate this class if you want to feel dumb take this class U will have 4 assignments every week DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ALL OF THESE LOW POST SCORES ARE TRUE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS. You'll have 2 labs and 2 quizzes each week that barely help your grade. Make sure you dedicate your life to studying or you won't pass this class. Family? Forget them. Job? Might as well quit it. This class will take up all of your time. Did I forget to mention this class has tons of work? Tests make or break you.
Got put into a "group" with one other person in an online class and the guy wouldnt respond to me AT ALL. I emailed her about it, she said I would have to "work it out" and that she didnt accept individual labs and couldnt place me in another group. I ended up doing every single lab by myself because I had no choice. It was a TON of work. 0/10
Professor Durant runs a tough but rewarding class. While the labs and timed assessments can be demanding, she provides helpful study sessions. Utilizing resources like unstuckstudy alongside the course materials made all the difference for me. Overall, a challenging yet valuable learning experience.
Just don't do it. Its not worth it.
I took her for both 1408 and 1409. The first time I took her class I received a B. For 1409 there is less labs and more quizzes, I received an A-. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU ARE NOT ACCLIMATED TO COLLEGE WORK. I am very grateful for her class because more advanced college classes are not always easy. Her class definitely taught me how to study better.
Please listen to reviews. It's almost impossible to pass the class. She goes overtime on lectures and expects you to stay. So many assignments that aren't worth much. WORST professor at Lone Star. Do yourself a favor and choose someone else. This class is extremely draining and demanding. It doesn't help that this lady is rude and disrespectful too
Professor Durant is the worst professor I've ever had. She constantly keeps students late, shows zero respect for our time, and treats anyone who asks a question like they're stupid. If you have a job or other classes, don't bother. She's rude, belittling, and makes learning miserable. Avoid her class at all costs.
Just don't
Do not take this professor for BIO 1406, especially if you plan on taking it online. She is horrible at making recorded lectures. Most of the time, they don't prepare you for the assignments. Overall, she is not a good option. Do not pick her
Professor Durant is an extremely rigorous grader, and you must submit work for the class at least four days a week. You will be assigned lab partners, and your schedules may not align. You have 2 labs due per week and 2 quizzes per week. You are required to be on camera for every quiz and exam. You will fail if you read or mouth the words at all.
