At first she tries to scare you by acting tyranical and cold, but she is a good teacher and over the course of the semester she softens up. Her class isn't too difficult. Study and you'll do fine.

What a ****, mean as all hell. But easy, gives easy tests and grades easy. However she is not afraid to rip you up in front of the entire class. But just rember she is stupid as **** do dont feel bad. She alos makes up stories and lies alot. Sorta strange
What an atrocious excuse for a teacher. Not only is the book a better professor than her, it communicates better with students too. For a speech/communication teacher, she has no idea what the hell she's teaching. I can't believe they're paying her for it
Terrible teacher. Loses speeches and outlines, does not allow make-up work, and disregards speech quality for simply following a script and staying on time. If you take her, make sure you choose topics that interest a 98-year old troll.
So she's a bit rough, but when you get to know her a little she's a sweet heart. Just do the work, that's all it takes. She's been everywhere and knows a lot. Nothing wrong with that!

Horrible, awful, garbage. She is not consistant in her grading. If she's in a bad mood, you might just get an "F" for that day. Honestly, I think she takes great pleasure in belittling students. She thinks she knows EVERYTHING so don't bother disagreeing. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS! You've been warned.

Her lectures are from her own personal experience and have little basis in fact, it's pretty much garbage. I've spoken to the staff and they've admitted it's only because of her husband she still has a job. She's an embarrasment to the teaching community, avoid her like she was syphilis.
I worked my ass off on my persuasive speech. I put in tons of research. I followed the assignment perfectly. I perfomed the speech without flaw. Everyone was impressed and I recieved praise, including from her. I went over in time by 16 seconds. An A+ speech became a C- speech. How ridiculous...

Attend all classes, take good notes, READ the book, KNOW the keywords for each chapter. That will get you pass the tests/quizzes. Interact in class and jump into your group work with both feet! Don't let her scare you! Get on her good side by asking her how she's doing!

very anal about the speech outline and bibliography. ur delivery of the speech will be timed (4:30-6:00 min). She observes EVERYTHING you do when delivering a speech. tests are hard if u don't study and take notes. doesn't like it when your late. drops you after 4 absences.
By far the WORST teacher in ANY SCHOOL. Very inconsistent and unbelievable arrogant. Extremely rude and very unprofessional towards students. Very critical on unimportant issues of a speech and can not recognize a good speech. Please, do not take her.

i wanna cry coz i need to take speech 121 and she's the only teacher that teaches it. i don't mean to complain but every time i did a speech, i thought it was a def. A BUT i'd always get a B or B-. U'll never know how to please her! TESTS ARE HARD. MIDTERM IS EVEN HARDER.
Doesn't lecture and rambles about nothing- midterm and the Final are worth almost 50% of grade yet she doesnt go over any of the material-VERY Unclear wording on exams, & lots of trick questions. If you are late she will LOCK YOU OUT. If absent 3 times you get an extra F. No Extra Credit. No make-up exams. Closed notes. She recently expelled someone for cheating. The slighest mistake on rules of a paper gets you an F on it. I survived with a C, because I ACED the midterm and final. failed everything else. She grades on a curve.

She is not rude she simly demands your attention. Do what she tells you and you will do well. She will only give you moderate help on her terms. She demands alot out of her students, does not hold your hand through the class. If you do the work the right way, no laziness, you will pass with flying colors. Her ways have made other classes a breeze for me..You all need to quit being lazy, and stop wanting a good grade handed to you.

She doesn't give people the grades that they deserve and she always has an attitude problem.
She's a nice person if you talk to her out of the class room but she is a BAD teacher. Shes very unclear on what she wants and no one can read her writing. She's really hard on people.Only 3 people got compliments from her. She requres you to copy every page you use in your speech. You also can't use the internet for research because "its garbage".
I already had a problem with getting up in front of people. I thought speech class might help. This scary lady made it harder.

Very old fashioned teaching style. I did get some useful stuff out of the class, however the tests were very tricky, worded like they came out of a 1960's era textbook. She's a nice lady, but I don't recommend her unless necessary. She teaches the only Speech 121 class. Look at Anderson's profile and see why you should take her for Speech 101.
She's a good teacher, very knowledgable, but she's been doing it far too long. Whatever information you give in a speech, she has an opinion, argument, or will just try to top you with more information. If you have a short fuse, do not take her. She will piss you off. If you're here to learn, take her class.
Professor Duxler is a very knowledgeable teacher with so much information regarding other cultures. Her lectures are very interesting. As long as you attend lectures and read the material, the tests are very fair. I would recommend her if you want to learn!

Boring class, she says the same things over and over that are not on the test. Reviews things that have nothing to do with the exams, the exams are straight from the book but are worded very tricky. She grades fair as long as you do the outline right, but she is not helpful and she thinks she knows everything.

She is a difficult teacher. She is interesting to listen to during lectures; however, she is opinionated and stubborn and set in her ways and this makes her less than the ideal educator in my opinion. I don't think that it is impossible to do well in her class; I'm just not certain that a person can have the optimal learning experience.
I wish I'd found this site before I took her class. She is archaic in her teaching style. Quizes are worded to seem as if they have nothing to do with the reading. EXTREMELY UNCLEAR! Claims to be avalible for help during office hours, but resents when you come in. Taking a "W" and trying again with another teacher is the way to go.
I was really hyped about this class. After taking her my confidence went from a 7 to a negative 5. Now when i have class presentations i cant hold myself together!!! (SHE IS EVIL)
Its been a year, and I still think about her. I am a 3.5 GPA student, and I got a C in her class. I worked my A** off, and I still got a "C". DO NOT TAKE HER!!! She will ruin your GPA!! Take speech 101 with Johnson or NOT AT ALL!! I hope that you take my word for it!

At first, Duxler was opinionated but interesting. However, she was also reptitive, unrelenting and assured of the idea that she was vastly more informed than anyone else in the class room. Her domineering and righteous attitude took away from the learning experience. Don't take her unless you like pain.
This woman is horrible. Even if you desperately need a speech class do NOT take her. There is a reason why her class is always open. She dropped me from the class a month in, after I had already taken and aced her first test (that she lost) and she didn't even inform me. Do NOT take this class.

She is very critical when it comes to the speeches and will help you if and only if you can catch her in time. dont worry she doesnt walk or talk with urgency so its easy to understand her. good teacher

Ex: 1 question asked, "Where's the best place to find a map? a) an atlas b) geography book c) map book... 1st you can a map in all 3! 2nd what the *ell does that have to with Speech 101? She's NUTS!

Ms. Duxler seemed like a very smart woman, although I feel it takes much more to be a teacher. It felt like she lived for correcting students and telling them they were wrong. Her style was very discouraging and she deducted points like crazy for things as irrelevant as using a capital letter instead of a roman numeral in an outline.
Crazy, opinionated, rude, disrespectful, scatter brain, repititious. I think I have heard more about her cats and her husband than interpersonal communication. Bring all your photocopies and notes you use to write group project or she will not let you present and you will fail...or get a D. Do not even bother trying to argue a point with her...

I took her Speech 121 class like 3 yrs ago. It was cool. If you need a speech class this is a good one. Our final was a group project on Buddihism (which we picked). If you dont like public speaking u wont like any speech class. I got a C but I didnt try hard & came late alot. Theres some easy HW and easy tests.

Decent, not easy. Take her Speech 121 class. If you take notes during class, and read the book between classes like she says you should, you'll do fine. 6-8 page term paper at the end of the semester. Try her class. If you don't like her by the end of the first week, you won't like her at all. I liked her class, however. She's just a little grumpy sometimes.
She was ok. Nothing super challenging, except if you don't go and barely listen during lecture. READ THE BOOK, its more of a help in this class than the teacher. I dropped, it bored me to death. But I'm an ASL major, don't really like speaking obviously. Funny professor though, lots of stories and strange terms.

she was easy, as long as you did what she wanted. she tells you what to study ahead of time and makes you evaluate other students. it's alot of work considering a speech class. you have to draw a map and she's picky about the margins on your outline. i liked it.
Great teacher but very old school. Most of the class didn't like her because she wasn't 'easy'. Challenging class, expects a lot from her students. Very picky about written formats. If you follow directions and read what she hands out you'll do great. If you wing it you'll fail. If you have a problem with something don't hesitate to go see her.
I took professor Duxler about two years ago. If you are a real college student by attending class (every day), taking notes, and being on time you will do fine in her class.I earned a B+ in her Speech 121 class. Our group did a paper on the Japanese culture and it was fun!She is a bit grumpy, but WE all need the class.

First off...if you do not like reading every single word in a text book, studying all the time for her quizzes, and killing yourself for a Speech class, then this class is not for you! I did everything, read every word, and had to kill myself every day for an A. I also had to suck up, and show that this was my favorite class. It is possible to get
It has been so long... 1979 but the skills that I learned from Mary Duxler have traveled with me my entire professional career (and yes I do have one) she will make you work your ass off but if you do you will come out a much better person and an adult that will succeed
This is a professor that really shows how lazy students have become. I recieved an A and all i did was do the work show up for class and study. Wow and i did well! who knew that a teacher a pierce expects you to do the work and behave like an adult and you will do well! Shes old and outdated but a very good speech teacher, show her respect.
I cried like a blubbering baby in her class. (I'M NOT KIDDING) She ruined my first semester of college, crushed my self-esteem and was completely biased against my speeches because of her own opinions. Every human being deserves to have some dignity, even inexperienced college students. Don't take her if you want to keep your dignity.

This teacher was the least helpful teacher I have ever had. She did not offer homework at all. Her class required four speeches, and she CRITICIZED students(telling us it was "constructive") for after every single one. She graded unfairly and was the least understanding teacher I have ever had.

If u study for her quizzes (which are based on mostly vocab) you should be able to pass her class. she is strict on grading & wants everything a her way. She will help you only if you approach her first.She is very rude sometimes and is VERY Boring! Overall, she was an easy 'A' for me because i did the speeches corectly & got "Bs" on the quizzes.
I think Duxler is being overly-criticized on this website. She's not that bad. I got an A in her class and it wasn't that hard. The only things I didn't like is that she can't really keep control of the rowdy kids in her class and I didn't like listening to her liberal political views. Otherwise I would recommend her...get an easy A.

i love speaking and have no problem speaking in front of people but this teacher made me so self-conscious about it. after every speech i did, she would rip me apart and basically say i did a horrible job. unfortunately i was not the only one teated like this in class. her tests were unclear and she would go off on random rants. she was horrible

She's a great teacher, not the easiest, but you'll learn a great deal if you pay attention, read your book and the syllabus. I've found what I've learned helpful in other classes.
I took argument thinking it would be easier than 101. This class is a requirement for entry into CSU, so you have to take it. SHE KNOWS THIS. She is a powertripping tyrannical evil beast! Should not be teaching. My attendance was perfect. I did the best I knew how to do. She would interrupt you in the middle of doing an ORAL. Got a D. NO CSU 4 ME!

TAKE NOTES. She will tell the same stories over and over, and she's pretty boring. If you run late, I would not recommend this teacher. But if you are in class most of the time, take notes and read the book, you should be fine, if you can withstand the boring lecture.

This was one of my first college class, I only took this class because it is required to transfer. The professor has the most irrelevant lectures ever. Her lectures vary from "sexy babies" to "fornicating in the woods" this class is a joke. The teacher is ancient, she talks too much and she grades based on personal preference.
