She is a really good teacher, explains a lot, but you have some reading and writing to do in the class. The tests are a little extensive, but mainly they are short answer or essay questions that you are aware of. I really enjoy her class!
She's a really good teacher and there isn't any homework. Only 2 quizzes over 2 books and the mid term and the final. Gives you a couple bye days for attendance but if you just get the notes from other people you can miss more days.

She was a very good professor. Lectures were boring, but what do you expect from a history class. Her exams were difficult, but she gives great study guides. As long as you go to class, and take decent notes, there should be no reason not to get an A. Great teacher
She made class very interesting. She did go fast with the notes and sometimes it was hard get everything down. She took attendance but you were allowed to miss 3. She was a very good professor and I really enjoyed her lecture. The tests are essays and short answers but if you take good notes they are not bad.
She is enthusiastic about the material she teaches. Very nice, material is mostly lecture based with powerpoint slides. A few books and excerpts are required to read. Not going to lie, the lecture can drag on sometimes, but overall, not too bad. Watched a couple of movies and had a few group debates. Requires you sign in at each class.
She rambles on and stutters alot. Doesn't take attendence. Only assignments are 2 papers over 2 books and the midterm and final. She gives a few extra credit opportunities, DO THEM! Midterm and final are both hard, lots of essays. Doesn't give a study guide, so go to class to get the notes. Overall not bad teacher, just sort of boring class.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS! No study guides and has the most boring lectures I have ever had in my life. The class only has 4 assignments and somehow I managed to pull off a B which I worked incredibly hard for.
DO NOT TAKE HISTORY 111 with this teacher!! Her lectures are so boring and she makes terrible jokes. The lectures move very quickly and there is a lot of information every class. There are only 4 grades all sem. which can really screw you over... the assignment sheets for the papers are vague and the tests are hard w/ no study guide.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING.... worst history teacher I've ever had...
Hard to judge a history teacher, but her routine is simple. Every single day we take notes while she lectures for the entire period. She offers tiny amounts of extra credit, take advantage of all of them. Nothing really stands out about her aside from the fact that she is very nice.
This class is hard and very boring, do not take it!
She is a wonderful teacher and as long as you go to class you will pass. She gives tons of extra credit! You will have 2 papers and 2 books to read and they are easy read.. Overall a wonderful class that made me want to minor in history!
Loved this class! There are no tests, only 2 essays. Attendance is not mandatory, but is helpful when looking at notes to study for the midterm/final. Fair grader. The two essays are based on two books, which are a very easy read. Class was interesting and she really new her history! Very helpful teacher when you need something. I recommend her!
She forgot to grade all of four of her classes papers and then graded them all based on totally different requirements then she originally required. Bogus teacher, do not take her if you value your education.
Don't buy the textbook "Give me LIberty: an American History"! I opened it once in the beginning of the year. You don't need to read it because she lectures straight from the book. And if you don't know enough about a subject after her lecture for a test, which doesn't happen often, you can just google it.
All she does is read from a power point. Does not grade papers fair. Prompt is useless because she doesnt grade what she says she will grade. Very boring
I found the lectures to be agonizingly boring. One of those classes in which I took 70 pages of typed notes, as an intro class! She didn't have a consistent outline style, covered way too much for what was actually on the tests, and frankly, was not very interesting. Oh, and no study guide for the first test,70 pages of notes, is horrible!!!
This class was pretty interesting, but she is a very horrible grader. She claimed there were no "trick questions" on the first exam, yet everyone was shocked as we read the questions. The study guide consisted of 12 topics that were barely covered. However, she offers a lot of E.C. and is interesting. Good teacher, needs some work, though.
Different people will think differently of this teacher. To get an A just go to about 2/3 of the classes, make sure to read both the books, do the extra credit and do the discussion papers. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. Mines still in original packaging. Theres only 2 tests and 2 quizzes. Probably easier than the other HIS111 teachers.
Very nice and interesting teacher. Willing to help out in anyway she can.Kind of hard grader on journals, but gives lots extra credit. All her powerpoints are online, but she does give a lot of informaion in class that isn't on the power ponts. Pretty easy class though. As long as you do the journals and study for exams its an easy A/B.
I really enjoyed this class. As long as you attend class and pay attention, it is a very easy class to do well in. She is a wonderful teaching and tries to keep the class as interesting as possible and will always offer help when asked for.
I think she's a great teacher!! READ THE 2 BOOKS!! The textbook was really not needed but the other books were. DO DISSCUSSION PAPERS they will make u or break u. She give a nice amount of extra credit but it is mostly random so COME TO CLASS and you'll do fine!
she is so nice. the class isnt that bad. just go to class and stay awake and you'll never have to touch the text.
This class wasn't hard at all. I did bad because I blew off the discussion papers thinking I could do all 10 at the end of the semester(I was wrong). The material is way to easy to follow. Just read the two books because the tests on them are pretty easy. Overall a solid course and Hollywood is real cool
She was a really great teacher, I loved her. I studied a bit but nothing to was too difficult and she is very helpful if you have any questions. The discussions were a really easy way to get points, make sure you do them on time though. I definitely recommend her as a teacher!
She is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. She really knows what she is talking about & you can tell she really loves her job. It's almost as if you really have to try to fail her class. Midterm, final, &2 quizes are the main grades plus 10 discussion papers & a lot of extra credit. I would recommend her definitely.
A good teacher and even funny at times. Make sure your grammar on the papers is perfect cus you lose a point for tiny mistakes. Most did bad on the midterm and she let us take them home and redo them. She also offers a ton of extra credit so its an easy A if you do all the work. Also I got away with never reading the book, just take good notes.
If you have time to do the reading, you can pass the class easily. I did not have time and so I failed. She's a nice teacher, obviously feminist in her lectures. This class did not inspire me or teach me anything valuable.
Hollywood is an AMAZING teacher! She is very laid back and makes sure everyone understands the material. She shows different sides of history that you didn't learn in high school. I would take a class of hers any day!
I had little interest in the class before starting it. It's one of my favorite classes now. Mary is a good teacher and makes class interesting. She likes to make bad jokes, and she's usually the only one that laughs. Exams are all essay and definition, she's not a hard grader though.
Very helpful ... seems like the most bearable humanities course. I would take her for any class she taught.
She recently changed this class so it is not easy anymore. I took it because i heard she was a great teacher but everything she teaches is useless now. The test are all essay and you have 2 papers to write on 2 books in the class. Pretty easy grader, but it is impossible to know what will be on the tests. Pick a different teacher.
She is an awful teacher. Comments said she was interesting so I took her. Her class was so dull and boring and she always laughed at herself. Tests were all essay with no hint as to what the questions would be. I got an 89.9 in the class and wouldn't round up to an A.Don't take her.
Great teacher! Class is tough, but if you do the work, you'll be fine
this teacher was ridiculous. liberal minded and extremely against any ideas except her ways. if you like to be taught about minorities, womens rights, and how bad america was to the indians then take this class. this teacher teaches more about the negatives of american history then the positives.
I've taken Professor Hollywood for two classes. I have really liked her for both! Her tests are essay but if you go to class she basically tells you what are going to be the questions!
Hollywood is pretty good. Extremely hard grader on tests and papers. Make sure to absolutely memorize dates and timelines for essay tests. Go to class. You will take a ton of notes and expect to memorize everything in detail. She does her best to make class as interesting as possible, but it is history...
Bad teacher. Grades way too hard on tests and papers. Only thing that will get you through is the extra credit she gives out. Oh the class is extremely boring because all she does is lecture from a powerpoint
Took this class because I heard it was fairly easy and she was a good teacher. Unfortunately, She changed the course around recently and all of the tests are essays. You need to be a history genius to get an A on her tests. She is that tough of a grader. Because of extra credit, I maintained a B in the class but I think i deserved better.
I'm convinced that Prof. Hollywood is a complete feminist! All of her lectures are devoted to minorities and women. This history is interesting but she pushes her views way too much. She is a terrible grader, with only four total assignments. Also I'm convinced she didn't bother reading my final essay and simply gave it a C!!
I started out as a high A student in her class but progressively declined throughout the class. Her grading is bogus, she is all over the place with her grading standards. If you go to class every day and write things that agree with her view you can get away with a B. Her view is always right. Avoid her if possible.
I liked this teacher, she is a tough grader but really organized and knows what she is doing! Go to class everyday and you'll be fine. Her tests are hard though so beware.
IDS 121.56 American Immigration. She is a great professor, second course taken with her. Her tests are straight forward and lectures are simple. Always seems to get horrible TA's but that's not her fault. Take her!!
The full name for this class was IDS 121.56 (American Immigration). The class was really hard for a gen-ed and if your looking for an easy A this class is not it! I got a B but the tests are all essay and you end up studding a ton of information and then you only have to know 1 specific topic. She grades pretty hard on the tests for a gen-ed class
This class is actually called 121.56. Hollywood KNOWS HER INFO! She is very passionate about what she is teaching. All of her tests are essays, and I consider myself to be a good writer and always ended up getting B's or C's on the tests. You need to go to class because you can earn extra credit for going. Very picky about grammar on papers
121.56. Got an A. Lectures are easy and go by quickly however her essay tests require knowing a lot of information for her to just ask about less than a handful of topics.
IDS121.56, The exams were pretty hard for a gen-ed class, but she was really passionate and knew what she was talking about.
She is a very good teacher and everything that you need to know is in her lectures, so make sure you take notes. She has some extra credit opputunities, so take advantage of them. But there is no homework, only points for attendance and the exams
She uses a powerpoint but only puts the basics up there like names but talks to fast (but clear) you have to write down what she says but barely have enough time. Tests are extremely hard its a months worth of lecture then she has you write an essay about one event even though a century was covered. DO NOT TAKE HER! WORST TEACHER AT ISU!
this class is impossible. i would not suggest anyone to take this class. All exams are essay and short answer questions. You have to memorize every detail. It's a very hard class even if you study. I've studied for days and still got a D on the exam.
Come to class and you'll be fine. There is a lot of material but it's obvious what will be on the test since only a couple things have enough info to write an essay on. She gives a review period before the test and will literally tell what is going to be on the test. I've never studied for a test in this class and have gotten A's on every one.
Her lectures and powerpoints are very straight forward. Everything is relevant for the exam. The only points toward your grade is from 5 exams and attendance points, so if you dont do good on tests you wont do good in the class. But overall a decent teacher
we never ever use the text books, except the novels. she talks great, everything is clear and she loves way she does, however her test are hard. its 4 tests, 2 quizzes on the novels are semi easy if you actually read the book. the only plus is you get points for going to class. She's okay.
The best professor I've had yet. She is willing to make exceptions if you have family issues or emergencies, and does not use the book. Get the novels and read them and the quizzes are easy. There is a lot to choose from when studying for tests and she won't give hints, so take notes on everything. She is awesome and makes the class fun.
This class was so hard. Fair warning there are NO multiple choice, T/F, anything. Straight up essays, yuck. If I had known that I would not have taken the class. Essays have never been my strong point. If you're good at history and enjoy essay tests you'll enjoying the class. At least the teacher's funny.
This class was way too hard. The novels that she says to read, READ. The quizes and tests are all short answer..no multiple choice. Even if you show up to class, make sure you have read all the readings. I recommend getting out of this class before its too late!
I LOVELOVELOVE Professor Hollywood. HIstory isn't one of the most interesting subjects and this class is a lame gen ed, but she makes the content easy to understand and interesting so you want to pay attention. I would take more of her classes any day!
I had her for histoy of american immigration. She was a great teacher who shared interesting information. She made good jokes too. Attendance is mandatory, get 2 points per day. Tests are essay based. She doesn't take late work even if half the class didn't know it was due. There is a big research project to work on during the semester
Don't get stuck with her. She expects so much out of you. All essay based tests. Need to know specific dates. Huge research Project. Papers due every other week. Too much work. Interesting information, but so hard to understand when it comes to test.
Nice, cheerful woman who made history pretty interesting for once. A lot of writing papers required, attendance mandatory, and ALL tests are essay based. She likes a lot of detail (dates etc) on the tests and grades rather harshly, so the class is overall pretty tough.
This is one of the most ridiculous gen eds I've ever take. GET OUT OF THIS CLASS. She makes you write so many papers and never gives you guidelines. Really hard class. She takes it wayyy to serious for a gen. ed.
Listen to the other reviews. I didn't, I no longer have a 4.0. Way to hard for a Gen Ed. The tests were ridiculous, all Essay and when she says "you are responsible for remembering everything" she is not kidding, points will be deducted if you don't mention every possible fact that could be relevant to the question.
Amazing teacher! Hollywood is so well-informed and well-spoken. She makes some awkward jokes, but she is always willing to help her students and the exams come word for word from the quizzes. I thought I didn't like history untill I took this class! I would recommend this class to anyone willing to do the reading!
I really enjoyed Professor Hollywood because she actually made a rather boring gen ed interesting. I did not enjoy history before I took it with her but now I am considering minoring in it because of her. Although the reading is really hard to get through because she expects you to remember a lot from the book. However, her lectures are awesome.
All the quizzes are straight from the textbook, so the lectures don't necessarily help you. The exams are all the multiple choice from previous quizzes and an essay with specific people and dates. She's in love with history so at least she's passionate about what she is teaching. Good teacher, kinda cheesy, but difficult content.
There is a formula to doing well in Hollywood's class, come to class, pay attention, write down EVERYTHING. The lectures supplement the reading, so if you want to get an A, reading is essential. However, if you come to every lecture, be present for all of the quizzes, and do well on the exams (4 in total) you will get a B-C without having to read.
So the actual Material isn't hard, but it is in her hands. She is incredibly boring, and often goes on tangents thinking she's funny. She's not. She harps on, and rants about things a bit too much. She also has really high expectations as well.
Tests are all essay but she's not too hard of a grader. Pop quizzes aren't hard, some are even opinion. As long as you show up for class and take all notes you'll be fine. When I took it she used an online book that was required because it had quizzes in it, so you may or may not need it. Lectures aren't too bad to listen to.
She's really nice and she cracks a few jokes they are kinda awkward but i like that about her. Her tests are ok, you need to read the textbook and also attend lecture but her lectures arent bad. Also i slept through a quiz and she let me take it at a different time so she's really cool for that. Take a class with her as a teacher
Exams are all essay and difficult to get an A on, but an easy B. You take 10 book quizzes online which are easy to get an A on, given you actually read the book. Pop quizzes are easy as long as you are there to take it. I found her lectures very interesting and I learned a lot of neat facts that you don't learn in a traditional US history class.
Prof Hollywood was great! very friendly, funny and kept class interesting. All tests are essays so studying way in advance is a must. You have to be good with decades and events and remember when things happened. The class is a little hard but she helps you know what to study for tests. always offering to help. The quizzes online are a big help too
She is by far my favorite teacher and I love this class which is unusual because I don't like History very much. You really should go to class because you get points for going and the lecture material is on the tests. Study for the Tests!
Professor Hollywood's classes are just Powerpoints and lectures. She is really passionate about history and sometimes goes on tangents on unimportant topics because of this. Her tests are hard so you have to make flashcards on everything she teaches. But, if you are struggling she always makes herself available with her office hours.
Heavy lectures, exams are solely essay, which are graded strictly, take heavy notes on lectures or the essays will get ya.
Her exams are majority essay with a few multiple choice questions, but the essays are near impossible. On top of that, you have to write a total of 4 papers for the class, that go along with 4 reading you have to do. A lot of work and she grades everything very strictly. Ive always hated history as a class, and this class just makes it worse.
She lectures the entire class, and gets carried away because she is so into it that you do not know what is important and whats not. The test are multiple choice and essay questions, but the grading is tough. The notes are so long and the book doesn't correspond with the things you are learning in class. Not a good class.
If you can avoid taking this class, please do. she knows about history but does not know how to be a teacher. The class is strictly lecture, literally. EVERYTHING comes from lecture so you better take super detailed notes, dates and all. You have to buy the book.. but she doesnt teach any of the material in it. The worst professor Ive ever had.
Don't take this class unless you want to fail. She has bad jokes and laughs at them but nobody else does. She wants to see her students fail.
Her lectures are incredibly boring and the readings she gives you are long and hard to understand. The tests are hard to study for because there is a lot of information given in lectures. Tests are half essay and had multiple choice and the multiple choice portion is very specific and things that are not taught in class. Hard for a gen ed.
She is my favorite professor. This is one of the only classes that I actually enjoyed! Lectures were very interesting. You will need to take lots of notes and know every little detail for the tests. You have 4 papers but they werent that hard. Online quizzes were easy and other than that not much homework! Definitely take this class!!!!
I really like this professor. Her lectures were interesting and if you listen and pay attention you will do fine on the tests. They are all short answer or essay questions. She doesn't give much homework, just one online quiz every week & 4 writing assignments per semester. She is very easy to talk to and very kind.
Shes very nice and knows what she is talking about. If you attend the lectures and pay attention, you will be fine. The textbook quizzes and reading assignments are pretty easy if you have been paying attention. The midterm, book quiz, and final exam are written so be prepared to memorize a lot for tests. She really cares about everyone succeeding
Lectures are very important to fully understand material, but she does post slides online. She is a great professor who obviously is passionate about history. I loved hearing her excitement for it! Great class w lots of opportunities to bring your grade up. She allows three absences, and then 2 points off of your attendance grade after that
Test on the book every week for easy points. Study a ton for midterm and final. Extra credit sometimes given to those who show up.
Professor Hollywood is a great person, but she expects too much of her students, especially freshmen who are taking this class (HIS136) as a Gen Ed. There are no multiple choice tests, there's weekly book quizzes (the website almost never works), and she didn't give a study guide for the midterm. I really like her, but her class is too hard.
If youre a conservative dont bother taking this class all she talks about is her democratic/ liberal beliefs and absolutely craps on anything republicans stand for, funny thing is most of the facts she says are wrong... just like every other democrat
Professor Hollywood is an amazing professor who is passionate and knowledge in history beyond beliefs. She tries to incorporate her own experiences or out-of-book connections and makes lectures very interesting. However, you will have a reading test every week that are hard at first but get easier as you get used to them. Tests are very hard.
Professor is very educated in what she teaches but gets extremely into her teaching which confuses you on what is and isnt important. Her tests are very hard and quizzes are as well. She pushes her political beliefs onto the students and talks about political facts that are untrue and misleading
Mary is caring and lenient in thrive. She is very lenient with due dates and truly wants all of us to get an A. There are points for attendance and there is quite a bit of homework but I promise it is all easy. Do the work, show up to class and you can literally get a 100.
I never read the textbook, but it's needed for quizzes. You have to attend class since the info on tests is from class and not necessarily the textbook. Taking notes in class basically ensures you a passing grade. Had to read one book, but it was short and an easy read. The weekly quizzes can bring your grade up.
Not a bad professor but nothing to write home about either. The first unit was extremely loaded with coursework I had no time to get all the stuff done. When students complained about the ridiculous amount of work, she didn't care. After that, the class was pretty easy. As long as you read the book and keep up with your assignments you'll be fine.
Professor Hollywood is a good professor, I had her online and she did not give out much homework. She gives our 3 exams and 3 writing assignments, she is a tough grader. Her directions on what she wants is quite confusing so you can look at it from different ways to answer it. I would not take this class again, only because of exams.
Hollywood is an amazing professor and I loved her class. All of her tests and assignments are papers but she gives you a week to complete them. The textbook assignments are super easy and can be completed ahead of time. She gives good feedback and made class interesting. She is also available outside class and responds quickly. She is amazing.
She's a tough grader! No tests except for a final, the rest are essays. I thought I was a good writer until I took this class, after receiving poor grades on my first two papers I emailed her. She was helpful, had a one on one zoom with me to tell help me. After that I got an A on my last paper and my grade went from a C to a A with extra credit!
she is a queen, highly recommend her and the classes she teaches. queen vibes only
Her lectures were okay but could get off topic. Wouldn't love to take her class again but didn't hate it either. The extra credit paper at the end really boosts your grade.
For History 111, Dr. Hollywood did exactly what she needed to do. If you attend the lectures and take notes, you should have no problem doing well. Dr. Hollywood was a part of our class's GroupMe and whenever a student asked a question (which was often) she would respond within minutes, not to mention how informative this class was as well!!
She was always willing to set up zoom meetings with me when I had questions about assignments and was very kind and personable! I wrote 4-5 papers for the class which was kind of annoying because it was just a gened history course for me, but she was not a super hard grader.
She is genuinely one of my favorite professors. She is always willing to help outside of class and just chatting too. Her lectures are never boring but I also had a good class that would participate and make it a discussion basically. You learn a lot from her without even realizing it. Over all really nice and helpful. She's a fair grader too.
She is so kind and hilarious and a good professor. Her tests may be just papers but she makes the class so enjoyable so it is not too hard.
Dr. Hollywood is LOVELY. Her class is a joy to be in and her lectures are funny and engaging. There are no "exams," just written assignments (six in total), but if you attend class and take good notes you'll be just fine. She's easy to talk to and connect with. You can tell that she's passionate about history and wants her students to succeed.
Mary is really knowledgeable about the content covered in History 111. The class is based on your grades on 3 exams and 3 writing assignments, and exams are essay based. Its also really hard to figure out whats going to be on the exams so ask her before.
I had Prof. Hollywood for my history gen ed. I thought this class was genuinely interesting, even though I'm not usually a history person. The writing assignments sucked, but the class itself was low work load: no homework outside the writing assignments (3 a semester), and I never used the textbook. Show up to class and you'll be fine
I loved this professor. She teaches history from a more honest point of view and gives engaging lectures. No homework, only graded by 3 tests and 3 essay papers, as well as an extra credit essay. Lectures are very info heavy so if you miss one and can't get the notes from anyone you may struggle on the upcoming assignment.
She was very nice and cared about her students but she graded really hard and there was not much in the class to be graded on other than tests and essays. I felt like I barely got a B in this glass. You have to take really good notes to be able to pass, her exams are so specific to the lectures. Good luck!
She wasnt a bad teacher but theres only about three grades and they are all papers. I didnt always go to class but I still managed to do fine on papers. Overall the class was just harder than it needed to be, felt like I was listening to her talk forever.
Your grade in this class completely relies on three 1000 word essays and 3 exams. The exams are all timed essays, no multiple choice. The prompts are super vague and difficult to answer. Professor Hollywood is passionate about her job and gives great lectures, it's just that the assignments and exams are absolutely awful.
You will have 3 reading assignments worth 100 points and the topics are so incredibly vague and hard to answer. She is a good and kind professor, I love her lectures, they're easy to follow and interesting. However the tests being essays as well are absurd, they are timed and are just as hard to answer as the reading assignments.
I got mixed feelings about her. Her lectures were straight to the point and PowerPoints were posted but it's only graded on 3 writing assignments and 3 tests (which were essays). The writing assignments weren't that bad but the tests are short essays and you don't know what she'll ask you until you get there. You have to study literally everything
Professor Hollywoods passion for history makes the class a lot more enjoyable. Most of the material is interesting even for non-history majors. Shes very helpful. The material itself wasnt too hard. Dont skip this class. Take notes based off of what she says, not just the powerpoint. It will help when you go back to study.
Professor Hollywood was a very knowledgeable teacher and can answer almost any question when asked, but her clear biases get in the way of the answers a lot of the time. She can sometimes make you feel like you are unintelligent when you share an answer, and it makes participating very scary. Some of the students tend to run the class as well.
Professor Hollywood is a great professor! She is super passionate about what she is teaching and is super personable, even in a class of 90. Great professor, however, the class is graded by so few things that it makes the class difficult and stressful, especially with the timed essays.
I have mixed feelings. She is passionate for history, which makes the class fun. On the other hand, tests are all written and she doesn't really tell you what to study (making it harder). Her essay towards the beginning of the year is hard and isn't clear on what she wants. Many people did poorly on it. Tests are lecture only so show up to class.
Professor Hollywood had to have been my favorite professor this year. She gives very clear information on grading and is overall a very nice woman. There is an extra credit paper at the end of the year that helps your grade so much. As long as you study a lot and attend all the lectures, you will be perfectly fine in the class.
hollywood is a very intense teacher she is all lecture based so if you are not in class you will not pass, lectures are confusing and out of order. she tries to make things personable but if your not a history buff its annoying
She gives fine lectures and she's knowledgeable about her stuff. But she's awfully pretentious and takes her 100-level history class way too seriously. The final was awful and disgraceful to college-level history. I felt like I was stuck in high school again and like all my old AP classes were relapsing. DO NOT TAKE.
Mary Hollywood was amazing! Go to office hours because they will help you! As long as you get all work done and get the points you can pass with an A or B! Very straight forward class! Definitely recommend!
Overall Prof. Hollywood is enjoyable and well informed. Grades were based off of four exams, one based on the book Nisei Daughter, a standalone paper and weekly textbook quizzes. All of them were largely essay based except the final. She offered extra credit for a short essay on the paper. The exams were easy if you knew the content.
She is very fun and enjoyable you just have to depend on her lectures because she does way more talking about stuff then is on PowerPoint.
She does a really good job going in depth on her lectures, that be said, be ready to take a bunch of notes if you want to do well on the tests. At the beginning, a lot of her slides have the basic things to write down, but as the semester goes on, her slides become very picture heavy and you have to rely on what she talks about.
If you enjoyed: -"Names and dates" History classes from High School -"In Chapter 8...?" Questions from your English classes TAKE DR. HOLLYWOOD. But if you're interested in History and don't want to relive high school... DO NOT ENROLL WITH MARY.
The exams and homework are easy if you study. However, she post the slides to canvas with no text and says things like only what she says out of her mouth will be on the exam. Her ego reflects her teaching thinking she's the only one who's correct and not history. The final exam is HARD mutplie choice but doesn't reflect her awful study guide.
Lots of readings and all exams are essay based, there is a reason this class wasn't offered for a while.
Hollywood is very passionate about what she teaches which makes this class interesting and not boring at all. There are not a lot of assignments so they really count! She also doesn't believe in multiple choice so all the exams are written. Dont let this discourage you, she is amazing!
She has her TA grade most things and does NOT give you a rubric for how she will grade you so when she has you ask the TA how you can improve, they will tell you something that's an easy fix, but won't let you redo anything because she expects you to be a mindreader to know what's on a rubric you don't have access to.
professor Hollywood is a great woman, and knows exactly what she's talking about. however, your grade is based only on discussions, book quizzes, and exams. you need to show up to class often as lectures/slideshows have minimal information when posted on canvas and having background will help on exams!
PROS: Incredibly interesting lectures, focuses on topics not often taught in a U.S. History course. Discussions are interesting, minimal homework & exams. Great person as well. CONS: Slides have little guiding information other than the general topic. Great study tool for going back to review for tests, but need to attend class.
Lots of notes and studying necessary to perform well on the few exams and discussion posts for this class. You must go to the lectures in order to get notes that are needed to answer essay questions on exams.
Professor Hollywood manages to take what should be an easy class (it's 100-level history, come on...) and make it way harder than it has to be. Be prepared to sit through lecture after lecture of her droning on, 98% of the time about race-related issues. This class is barely about American History and is really about the history of civil rights.
Did not like this professor at all. Would drag lectures on. So boring. Very tough grader.
i had her for honors mindset, she is such a petty grader. i got a point off on a perfect presentation because I had one typo. she also took points off off one time because I turned in a paper with comments attached and she said it "made it difficult to read"
Professor Hollywood is engaging and passionate about the material. The class has few assignments, but they're important. Exams are essay-based, so staying on top of lectures and readings is key. unstuck AI can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
The layout of her exams are absolutely horrible. If you miss even 1 class you are likely to not do well on the exams. The notes she puts on canvas are just pictures so if you miss any words she says in class good luck.
While I like Mary Hollywood as a person I found her class a bit difficult. I have never been a history person but this class has reinforced this. I love the way she lectures however, it is difficult to do well on the 1st exam. I am an honors student and was in fact not prepared for the exam. You really need to pay attention to dates. GO TO LECTURE!
I took this class during my freshman fall semester, and it was the most stressful class I've ever had. Although Professor Hollywood seems really nice, her teaching style isn't very easy to follow. There's hardly any homework, but the exams are incredibly difficult. Definitely make sure to attend class, though—it's super important!
Mary Hollywood is by far one of the worst professors I've ever had. Her lectures are full of pictures ONLY. She expects you to basically transcribe what she is saying for notes. She sticks to one teaching style that works for her and very few students. The tests and quizzes are hard because she gives NO criteria as to what she wants for an answer.
Very bad professor. Stuck to an older baby boomer style of teaching that no longer works for many students in todays generation. She teaches like 60s style by just speaking and giving her version of history which is hard to keep up with. In my class after the first exam she did give us extra credit, but only worth 5% and barely improves your grade.
I did find the content of the class interesting. A lot of her class was history that isn't in textbooks and stuff I had never known before. She also doesn't give out homework. However, you need to go to class every day. She only lectures and presentations are only pictures. Grades are only tests/discussions. Study guides are not helpful for tests.
Her lectures consist only of pictures so you have to be in class and actively taking heavy notes. If you miss even one class you are probably going to get at least one question wrong on the exam. She is not a terrible professor but definitely tougher then others. If you show up, pay attention, and do the couple of assignments you should be fine.
She is very old-fashioned when it comes to teaching and testing. Lectures and material are almost all word of mouth, so you have to attend every lecture to understand what you are doing. The tests are impossible to study for because you have to memorize everything that happened within 100 years, and you always end up forgetting something.
This class is heavy on lectures. Presentations are posted afterward, but most of the content isn't actually on them. Only Professor Hollywood says it, and you are supposed to write it down. It was a very chill class with essentially no homework ever. Just make sure you go to class and take REALLY good notes. I would advise only typing notes.
if you have a hard time remembering specific dates for exams don't take this course for your history credit.
Very lecture and note heavy. Need to go to class to do well. Was not a fan of the listen and struggle to write down everything in time teaching style. Somewhat interesting class, overshadowed by memory of dates and facts. Gave extra credit and chance to make up tests. If your memorys good youll do okay.
Prof Hollywood was a good professor in my eyes, she had well put together lectures and did not miss a single class. I will say, do not miss class if you want a good grade. Take notes if you so desire, I got by with just listening to the lecture.
I love her lectures. she gives great insight and shows the true facts in history
She is a very sweet professor. I always enjoy her lectures because they're interesting and you can tell she cares a lot. Exams are on paper and writing focused. DATES ARE IMPORTANT!! She doesn't post in depth notes so while she doesn't take attendance, you need to go to class to pass.
Professor Hollywood was my absolute favorite professor. She cares about your success and prepares you well. You do need to come to every lecture and take notes in order to do well, but she makes each lecture worth your time. I hated history before taking her class, but now I love it. She also doesn't sugarcoat any history.
Lots of the tests were based on subjects talked about during lectures. You need to bring up specific examples in the essays, or you won't get a good grade on them. Has unit quizzes for the first unit but not the last 2 which impacted my grade. Offers 0 extra credit and does not accept late work.
