Creative, but you have to work to get anyting out of the class

You will totally get a C no matter what you do on any test or paper.

She doesn't give study guides, and doesn't hardly let you know what you should study.
Tons of reading--incredibly difficult to meet her A standards. Don't expect an A even if you enjoy and usually do well in history.
She is a horrible teacher. I could not stay awake in her class, and I am a history buff. She is one of the worst teachers on campus. Don't expect to learn much and plan on working your rear off for a B or less.
I had to drop out of this class. Very bad. I had a hard time waking up for this class, plus when I was there...I had a hard time of keeping up. Her lectures are drawn out and boring. I spaced out a lot. I had no idea what was going on. Just not my type of teach.
Class time is spent with mindless lectures that you're not even tested over. There is no text book and you're required to get 3-5 books to read outside of class. Test are only over the books. Sitting through class for 3 hrs and taking silly notes for nothing is not what I paid for. Never again!
Open notes tests! What more can I say
dr rowe is the smartest woman in the whole wide world. she does have high standards, and you will have to work hard to get an a in this class, but it's worth taking her because she is an excellent teacher.
her lectures can be oddly entertaining or a mass of confusion. has a tendancy to speak in different voices and languages for extended periods of time, which to be honest is a little scary. read the book x3 and write the best paper of your life and maybe you will pull out a B. no eye contact.
Her lectures are mildly entertaining depending on the information. She tends to lecture the ENTIRE hour and most of the information for the test is from the textbook, but OPEN NOTES TEST, major plus!! I got a B, but it took a LOT of work
The class is easy! Don't buy the book b/c you only use it for 2 wks of the class if that. Just pay attention to her lectures (which are entertaining). I went to class on average 5 or 6 times a month and pulled out an A. Just pay attention and you're fine, plus, tons of extra credit opportunities...
She sucks. Boring. Grade is only based off of the tests. But if you like that sorta thing, she's your chick.
Lets yo use your notes on her essay based test which she does give you an idea of what he essas will be over. She never checked our nots as well, I pulled a C and suck at writing. she is easy if you can make it throught the lectures. She cracks her self up when telling HIST SHe jumps around real bad
Holy cow, this woman is horrible! I'm a History major, and I found her class boring.. Check that, EXTREMELY BORING. Mindless lectures, and not to mention, she wears horrible clothes. But still, I'd take this with someone else. ANYONE but her. Ugh, glad I'm done with taking ANYTHING from her....
The professor was very apathetic, quick tempered, and unchallenging. She did not encourage active participation and discussion.
I am steaming mad right now. Im a senior and inrolled in all 4000 level coarses with this being the exception and it is by far the hardest coarse ive ever taken. She is so miserable to listen to. I hate her teaching style and expectations from a 1000 level coarse. She is ludicris. i plan on going to the dean of the department with a complaint.
Uhhh, you, below: before you go to the dean, learn how to spell. I'd fail you to, with that prose style. Jeez.
She is scary, mean, confusing, and looks like an umpalumpa. Do not take her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! She is horrible in every way possible. I made all A's last semester, except for her class I got a C. She is extremely boring and her tests are all essays that she doesn't prepare you for ahead of time. I always get A's on my papers for English, yet she gave me C's all the time. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!

Dr. Rowe gives you every chance in the world to succeed on her exams. Our class had open note tests every single time. You pay attention in class and take copius notes, something you need to know how to do in college, then you will learn plenty and you will get an A. Oh yeah it helps to be a super fast writer.

I didn't like her for my sophomore class. As a senior, I figured out her schtick. If you want an A, show up and pay attention. You may even try asking a question or two. . . perhaps even go to office hours. You don't have to be a pet, but show some friggin interest in your education. Don't let her buckskins scare you. She does tend to ramble.
She's actually a good professor. The key to her freshmen survey class is to pay attention to her lectures as she usually gives open note tests. A fast hand also helps. For here upper level classes be sure to read the books she assigns and participate in class. She is a fair teacher.
She is a miserable horrible teacher. Class is so unstructured you do not know where you are or where you are going. It is hard to believe that she is still a professor here. She humiliates students in front of the class and is a regular jerk about everything.
Although I know students that do not like this teacher---I found her style of teaching rather refreshing. She likes discussion--go out on a limb and participate. You may not always be right, but you'll learn in the process. Class was mostly essays---develop a well-organized, logical essay and you'll do fine
This class had no tests but several "quizes". All presentations where group. You get strong feeling she is a man hater. She belittles people in class.
Lectures are long an boring. if possible, take another teacher. but she does let you use notes on both of the two tests you take, that is the only thing i have found benificial in this class
I like history a lot untill i took this class try your best to get another professor! Really boring and when we do have papers or assignments she dosent explain anything about them.
Okay, if you can get past the facts that: A) She reminds you of (your choice)[I've heard Oompa-Loopa, Don Veto, etc] and B) that she lectures fast, then the class isn't that hard. Open note tests, really don't use the book all that much to be honest. Maybe the little one for group assignments, if and when you have them. Decent overall.
I would suggest going in half with someone on the book in this class becasue you dont need it that much. But she as a teacher likes to talk about history like she invented it.Lectures always go the full time which gets annoying after sitting in her class even 50 min.The class can be passed with a B. I got a C because I am a slacker. She cannot dress.
This teacher is by far the worst teacher ever. I couldnt stand listening to her pointless lectures! She was off the wall and she talks to the floor. You have to do all the studying yourself to get anywhere!! Its almost pointless going to lecture. Find another teacher!!
be prepared to get a C in this class because she finds no one incredibly smart... she talks down to you like your stupid when you ask her questions and if you get her mad enough.... she goes nuts just like Don Veto.... can't understand her at all....
I had her for the Honors section of freshman history years ago. Mostly what I remember from her class was the fact that she was always berating us for being Honor's students. For some reason she had it out for the entire class from the first day. Since then I have witnessed her behaving very unprofessionally. Definitely on a power trip, this one.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. All she does is ramble on with no notes. Her test are near impossiable. Do not ask a question, if you do, she makes you feel stupid. She is never there to help and plain and simple, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Rowe grows her own cotton & makes it into stuff. That's just friggin' funny! For the most part, she rambles. If you put even a little effort into your papers you will get a B. Could easily get an A if you try. Readings are a must for her upper level classes.
She didnt let us use our notes. She rambles on and on and doesnt give you a clear idea what to study. Try to get another teacher if u can.
You have to know specifics, and you are an adult so no study guides or anything specific given to study over.
She rambles alot and we never got to use our notes for a test. If you speak up in class you degrades you. Just a tip read the book!
Horrible teacher. Talks about nonsense and uses films a lot. Learned more about Greece in Hist 2400 Ancient World, total waste of time. Took a unofficial survey in class, it seems that on average females think she is easy, males think she is hard. Lot's of group projects, on on the ones I did before dropping did A work but group got me a B
ok stay away!
Great teacher if you like histroy, you don't have to go to class if you just read the book you can get an A, very passionate and knowledgeable. If you care enough to put some effort forth she is a great teacher.
HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT TAKE! SHE HAS TOTALLY CHANGED HER TEST STYLE...NO OPEN NOTES, AND HARDER! BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENTS ARE POINTLESS. TERRIBLE LECTURER...MUST READ BOOD TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON.
She was so extremely helpful! Her door is always open and she really wants you to succeed.
Horrible teacher!! Has a lot of knowledge but everything is her opinion and test are impossible!!
Biggest waste of time in my life. Dumbest tests i have had to take. Complains that we dont care about history enough, but it is hard to give a damn when a stupid don veto look alike is yelling at you all class for not caring and how bad her arthritis is. I would rather die then see her again, much less take a class she teaches.
I'm a history major. There are only a few weeks left of this semester and I have a D. She teaches more anthropology, and her interpretation of history rather than fact and encouraging our own interpretation. It's only a 2200 class, but it feels more like a 4000 class. Avoid her if possible.
She is a tough teacher! She takes attendence everyday, the blackboard assignments are hard. If you read the book, then you will do well on her tests. Her lectures aren't really that helpful on the test. I usually just read the chapters and answer the questions in the back. Only 2 people did well on her first test.
Very hard general education class. Best grade on test is a C and she does not ever give A's on her tests. Take every extra credit oppurtunity she offers, because you will need it. She is very smart, but is more concerned about hearing herself talk then teaching you. Try to get a different professor if you can.
This class was incredibly hard. But I don't think that making fun of her is going to make it any easier. We signed up for it, she's doing her job. But yes, extremely tough class.
She tells you something is on the test and that is not what is on the test. you need to know everything that is talked about and everything that is in the book.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Hardly anything she says is on the test. Unless you LOVE writing essays, sitting in front of the class everyday, and love to read a lot of literature outside of the class material, don't take it.
My comments aren't personal attacks. However, taking a class with her was a huge mistake. Most of what is said about her on this site is accurate. She takes very promising courses and makes them unnecessarily difficult and in turn scorns students for either not understanding or progressing. UCM students, please just stay away from her classes.
One of the worst professers that I have had. More eager to hear herself talk ,as another comment said, rather than make sure the students are learning something. STAY AWAY!!!!
This class made me want to jump off an extremely tall building. This professor is horrible! Her lectures are as dry as the desserts of Iraq and if she does not like your opinion you will fail! She randomly breaks into OLD ENGLISH! I have no idea how I managed to end of with a "B" in her class... Oh yea sleepless nights working on homework and booze
This instructor is very frustrating. Her lectures are very disjointed, and she seems to rely upon the book and videos to teach the students. I feel like I'm wasting money every time I attend this class. I can't really take notes, since there are usually none to take, or are very irrelevant. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this instructor!
Worst teacher I've ever had. Does UCM even interview these people? She may be knowledgeable but she is completely worthless as a teacher. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. Complete waste of time and 50min of listening to her talk seriously makes me daydream about how I could kill myself. I HATE HER AND THIS CLASS
American Hist to Civil War. Boring mandatory class to begin with. Teacher doesn't help much. It's straight lecture all the way through. I think she covers good material, but she is very uninspiring. Gives writing tests, and makes you participate in a simple message board.
She is very very tough, but not too tough in my opinion. If you give a stupid answer, she lets you know. Just study the material before you open your mouth in class. Lower level class is kind of boring. No study guides, but this is college. Upper level courses EXTREMELY reading intensive, but her lectures are very interesting, as if she lived it
Shes not as tough as everyone is portraying her to be. i was so put-off by these comments that i didnt want to take her. She has very detailed lecture paritcularily on Rome. Ive gotten an A on every test so far. The first essay was drag though. i feel if you raise your hand and ask a relevant question, she'll notice it and favor you when grading.
She spent the time rambling and treating us like we were dirt for not reading. Class is supposed to be in class work too, if she wants us to read the book more than listen then what is the point of the class? avoid at all costs.
Very knowledgable! She's very passionate about her material. Don't take her if you're looking for an easy A. She is a fair grader, but expects the students to do their best and complete the assignments as required. She is available for questions and student conferences. Very interesting class! Great teacher!
Be sure to take good notes and keep up with the reading! She is defiantly not the best History professor
She was unclear about what she wanted in assignments, gave essay quizzes 1/3 Fridays and occasional ones on a Monday or a Wednesday. She doesn't take ideas from students and ifthey don't follow her beliefs she can be downright rude. Near impossible to get an A and she spends alot of time in the class ranting about students and class in general.
She expects so much more out of students, and this makes me want to try. She is extremely difficult to take, but she expects people to work, and if you put in the effort, she'll reward you in return. She is a little crazy, and goes into her lecture trances because she really loves what she is talking about. You should take her if you want to learn!
returned no grades at all until 2 weeks until finals. As you can imagine thisturned the majority of the semester into a guessing game with regards to my grade. She has a real problem returning emails and posting anything on blackboard. Her expectations on assignments are unclear, and if you come in late she will remember to hate you.TAKESOMEONEELSE
She is a pretty hard teacher. KEEP UP WITH THE READING!! her tests are all essays. She also doesnt give your grades back.
The class is hard, but is passable. KEEP UP WITH YOUR READINGS!!! The problems that I had were not so much with the course work but with the professor she is very bad about communicating grades back to the students. We did not find out our grades for the class until after midterms.
Mary Rowe has got to be one of the worst professors I have ever had. She only assigns essays for homework assignments and each essay is worth 20% of your grade. She is very unclear of what she wants in her essays and grades very harshly. Tests are nothing but short answer and essays and she expects you to complete the entire test in 50 minutes.
Ha never said what needs to be in your essays until you have turned it in and she's already graded it. When a question is asked she doesn't stop much answer it as she does talk down to you for asking it. And as she will tell you on the first day, she doesn't want to teach. She is just a historian who happens to teach.
very hard and when you were confused she didnt help only talke down on you. if room else where take advantage
Worst teacher I have ever had. Wish I would have taken History to 1877. Avoid taking at all costs.
This lady is horrible. I think I have a B right now and I would still never take her again. We have taken two tests and have turned in 4 discussions and she hasn't given us a grade on but one of each. The semester is nearly over. Very hard to listen to in lecture. Do not take. Avoid at all costs.
Trust me. Avoid her at all costs.I'm a History major and I genuinely thought I could tough this class with her out but she is literally the worst professor at UCM. Seriously if you can avoid taking a class instructed by her do it. Your GPA and emotional well-being will thank you.
HORRIBLE INSTRUCTOR. POINT. PLANT. PERIOD
AWFUL. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. She gets completely off topic, and is hard to listen to. You have to read the book forwards and backwards if you want to pass.
Dr. Rowe is the worst professor I've ever had. She has conjured up this absurd grading system that you basically won't know what your grade is until you get it back on your transcript. Her tests are all essays and you must finish them in 50 minutes. DO NOT TAKE HER!
This was one of my favorite classes because it was so easy. I was excused from the final because I had so many extra credit points (over 100 points). She gives a huge opportunity for extra credit so take advantage. I had over a 100% before the final. She likes participation and questions from students. She only gives 2 tests, they are essay.
Do not take this professor if you want to pass a Gen Ed. history class easy. She assumes that you have read the chapter inside and out and you'll pay if you don't. She is a harsh grader even if you meet the requirements and has a beyond ridiculous grading scale. Just try and find a different professor, for your own good.
Terrible teacher. Very hard to pass her classes even if you take notes and read. She does not email ahead of time if class is canceled.
Long lectures that arent always pertinent to the homework material, but sometimes things she lectures are in the homework that arent in the book. Pay attention and take notes! She expects a conceptual understanding of the material and grades in your favor if she recognizes that you are trying. Great professor to learn history and work ethic from.
Her lectures are not over the material that she assigns us to read. Her lectures are nowhere to be found on the final exam. Basically all that is needed to do is comprehend the absurd amount of reading that she assigns and hope for the best. This class really should be an online on.
Everything is opinionated, mean it is only her opinion. She does ever week a quiz and essay. You have to do the reading almost twice to understand it. The paper you may be done well but if she doesn't think it covers in her opinion the main point, you're screwed. She knows a lot, but way too much.
She is honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. There is essays every week worth 20 points, I only get 15/20 most of the time. I came out of high school with a 4.0, so I am good student. Her grading is very one sided and opinionated. Wants you to fix something, when you do, she says she wants it the way it was before. Do not recommend.
She is very opinionated but she knows what shes talking about. She grades according to how she thinks you can explain the textbook. Not a good professor at all. Only good thing about the class is the take home final. I would recommend trying a different professor if possible.
The class I took with Dr. Rowe was definitely my hardest class for the semester. She would lecture M/W, sometimes following the book, and other times saying all history text books (including ours) had it wrong and this was really what happened, then we had a quiz and "essay" due every week online on Friday. Tough grader/vague feedback.
I thought her lectures were pretty good, but they have nothing to do with her tests. Speaking of tests, this was a 1350 ( yes, a freshman level course ) and no one in the class could get an A on her tests. I am a senior and I was so frustrated I had my spouse take the online test with me, he has a Master's degree in history and FLUNKED her test. NO
It's an okay class. Lectures aren't too bad but be prepared to take notes because some of what she will say wont be in the book but it will make an appearance on the quiz. Each week we are assigned a quiz and a short essay to do. She allows 2 attempts on the quizzes and she is a tough grader on the essays. It's not too bad but there's a lot of work
Horrible professor. Assigns a quiz and a paper every week and then doesn't grade the paper for a month. Not sure how I'm meant to improve on my work if I don't know how I did. Lectures get way off topic and she inserts her opinion way too often. I spend 7 hours every Thursday night writing the paper, which is awful. I hate this class, avoid it.
Awful professor. Extremely rude when you try to talk to her one on one pertaining to your grade or any other question you may have. Her lectures are extremely vague and often go off topic, but then she expects you to know everything perfectly on quizzes and essays.
Dr. Rowe is an old school teacher, which is what I appreciate about her. She's a no-nonsense kind of professor who expects you to put your all into your work. If you do not want to try, then do not take class. She gives you what you give her.
