I hate chemistry, it's a class I struggled with in high school, so I was dreading having to take this class. Dr. Barber is great! She's understanding and she's a fantastic teacher. There's a lot of work, but do it, because there's no way you won't pass if you do. I highly recommend her, she's one of the best at Wayne.
Not the best teacher in the world, but she is by far the most generous I've had, and I'm in my fourth year. Tons of chances to get at least a passing grade, and if you partially knew what you were doing it was almost a guaranteed C on the exams. I definitely recommend taking her for this class, a guaranteed passing grade if you do what you need.
Easy class. Pay attention to lecture if you haven't had chemistry before. The old exams are GREAT practice for the real ones. Thats the only thing I would use to study. Homework is a waste of time, but necessary for the points. Quizes are easy since you get to retake them until you get 100%. I would recomend taking her. Easy and fair. Good class.
I loveddd herrr!! She was the sweetest teacher I have ever had! If you need help she is always there and is always willing to make sure that you did your best! I definatly recommend her! =)
This teacher is the nicest! She is very good at teaching the material and right now I'm passing with an A! She gives a lot of homework, but in this class it is needed in order to learn the material and pass the tests! She also gives extra credit and is very helpful! Overall, Dr. Barber is a great chem teacher and I would recommend her to anyone!
Has a tendency to talk to the class like they're elementary-aged. Very hard to get in contact with. Often isn't available during posted office hours, and has been known to not show up if you have an appointment with her.
was not very hard but there is ALOT of work involved, alot of hw, labs and studying for this course. must memorize formulas, tests are exactly like the practice exams
Awesome teacher. You actually learn in her class. There's a lot of work to do, but as long as you do it and pay attention in class, you'll do fine. People complain about her, but that's because they want a blowoff class and get away with not doing the work. I would recommend her to anyone.
She's an AWESOME and wonderful teacher! She's really great, fair, and tries to understand the students. But you need to study in order to pass. Your grade doesn't only depend on tests,but also on the online hw and quizes. She gives extra credit which really helps with your grade. Overall, I loved her and would take her again! :D

Not bad, it's just extremely irritating that you have an online quiz due at least once a week and have to use CPS in class. Got an A- because I missed a bunch of them, even though I had a test average of 99%. If you are like me and like courses that are just 3 exams and a final, go with a different prof.
very good professor, explains the material clearly, chem is naturally tough to understand but she made it a bit easier.
treats us like high school kids, and makes her test really hard and not enough time to finish. started out with a full class and during the final more than half the class dropped. final is worth 300 points not to mention extremely hard you do bad on it your grade will drop a whole letter grade. HW and Quizes are ridiculously long and hard to do.
Hard class. Homework/quizes are HARD AND LONG.The final exam ends up hurting you more than helping you. The exams are tricky and you have no time to work the problems out. A large portion of the class ends up dropping by the end.
Going to class was a total waste of time but you have to go. Going made me much more confused and i felt hurt me in the end. Her study guide isn't very useful for the test, but i guess at least she made one. If you want to do decent in this class you must go to SI sessions, or else your out of luck!
She focuses on telling you how you should study- and you know exactly what questions will be on the final.
This class is a dream, her reviews are exactly like the test. Just take her notes and you will get an A.
Tries to teach a class of 300 like a small highschool class. Wastes a ton of time walking around the lecture hall making sure students are working problems and not texting on their phones. Very rude and unapproachable. She's more concerned with giving a ton of work and going on a power ego trip than with actually teaching students.
Dr. Barber was so nice. If you ask her for help, she'll really help you. She uses a clicker, so you might need one if you take her. Her homework problems are online, and required. They help A LOT though. Definitely the practice you need. Also on exams, if you felt any questions were unfair she'll turn it into extra credit. I definitely recommend he

She is the hardest chemistry teacher in terms of homework. Her homework takes hours to do and every answer has to be exact, otherwise it will be marked wrong. DONT take her class. I actually liked chemistry in high school but she makes chem impossible. The does a chapter a day, and a hw. and quiz for each chapter...ONLY on webassign, the worst!

Explains some things very well, but not others. Sometimes talks to class like we're a bunch of 5 year olds. Gives sample exams and the actual exam will be MUCH different/harder. Refuses to curve, even though the class average was a 60% on the last exam. She seems extremely nice, but the class was harder than it should have been.
I never took Chem in high school so this class was a challenge. She gives you everything you need to pass the class including podcasts of lectures, notes etc. SI sessions were VERY VERY helpful.As long as you study and make sure you understand the material you will be fine.However if you're lazy and dont plan to do well-you're out of luck. She is one of the best professors I ever had!! I got an A out the class and I never re-listened to the lectures! even on the days I didn't attend! She give a lot of easy extra credit. the study guide is helpful for the homework although I didn't even purchase the study guide! I would recommend her! Her study guide was also very helpful.
Dr. Barber, is a great professor. She wants you to succeed in the class but you have to do the work. A lot of homework & quizzes but they are all very useful in test preparation. I got an A- and is an easy task to accomplish if you complete all the assignments and study guides that she gives you BEFORE the exams. She wants you to pass her class!
Barber is a wonderful chemistry instructor. She is very well versed in the subject and really wants all of her students to do well! Do the homework, take notes, and DEFINITELY review posted sample exams- easy A.
Barber is actually a very nice woman and great teacher. Ive never been in a chemistry class, which gears students to do good more than this one. If you actually do the webassign and get perfect and come for attendance you will automatcally get like an extra 8% boost on ur final grade. This class should come with a surgeon warning: WARNING! This class is ridiculously hard! You must study everyday! If you are a procrastinator, you better change your ways because there is no way you'll pass the class if you think studying the week before the exam is enough time. Good lectures, but work load is CRAZY! goodluck!
She is a good teacher, best way to prepare for tests is to look at old tests however i heard she changed from a four test semester to a six test semester you should read the book on any part that you didnt understand in class otherwise you should be fine
The information itself is not hard at all, but the workload is crazy and honestly she makes it 1000 X harder than it needs to be. All you got to know is the equations, the constants, the exceptions, and do some practice. Instead of doing that, she goes off on random tangents and gives you useless Web-assign. Just annoying.

she's a really nice lady. very helpful. answers e-mail quickly. VERY fair grader. gives extra credit towards the end of the year. final was a lot harder than expected. you learn a lot throughout the course. dont' have one negative thing to say about her. i would recommend her!
Class is not as hard as you think, it's just there's a LOT of work. Webassigns were but OWL was too crazy sometimes, I had to skip like 3 of them. Exams aren't that hard if you know the material, most of the questsions are typical book problems / sample exam qs, however she sometimes adds a question you've never seen but still can be solvable if u have enough time lol. Key is to practice as many probs as u can and try and finish webassigns and owls the moment she assigns them or ull get crammed!
I am a couple days away from taking the final, and I have to say this class is extemely time consuming. If you do the work, you learn alot. I took this class several years ago at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and did well. I totally expected this class to be easy. Not so,this class was harder than when I took it before. She is a good prof.
The material itself is not too difficult, but the workload is overwhelming. You cannot get lazy even for a second with this class. Unfortunately, I did! She is an excellent teacher, I just wish we didn't have to do so much work. Make sure to go to quiz!
This class is overwhelming. 6 exams, weekly homework on OWL is horrible,weekly quizzes on Web assign are just as bad. Be prepared to study for at least 15 hours a week. She is a good teacher however I dont see why she makes this class harder than it needs to be. The material isnt that hard but the workload is insane. TIP: Do good in the beginning!
While this class was time consuming in terms of homework, you are given a good chance to get a good grade. Barber goes through everything that will be on the test in her lectures - sometimes she even writes "this will be on the test" on her lecture slides. Her tests are possible to pass - unlike some other teachers.You will do well if you work hard
Easy at first, but gets a little bit harder. TONS of hw!!! I spent at least 3 hours a week on two ridiculous webassign and even worse OWL assignments. Besides that her tests are straight forward for the most part. Study and you should be OK
She is an amazing teacher to have. If you have any questions she will answer them so you can understand. She will go over material in class and if she feels the class is not understanding she goes over it again.
Okay, I just finished this class, well almost i still have to take my final next monday. But this teacher is a good teacher and explains everything that is going to be on the test. you have to study for the exams! THE OWL HOMEWORK. u will have to spend atleast 5 hours a week for it and its unhelpful GOOD LUCK!

this is suppose to be a rudimentary chemistry class instead i had to work harder for it than my 2000 and 3000 level classes. the assignments will take up about 6 hours a week if not more and are totally useless, you will work harder than necessary for a course that will prove useless in the future. as a professor though she is a sweet and helpful.
there a LOT of homework. The OWL online takes 3-7 hrs per week, then you have lab work, quiz class, reading and lectures. You have got to put in so much time for this class. Good luck if you're a fulltime student. Also, you don't need to buy the 'clicker'. You get 40 pts for buying one, but no pts for using it. You can make up for those pts with EC

She is difficult and this class really requires alot of work but she offers hw and extra credit which reallllyyyy helps in the end. Overall she is a good teacher just a little difficult to get used to.
If you have a busy schedule/full time student AVOID THIS CLASS! VERY TIME CONSUMING! TONS OF HW! She explains the material well. She is a very sweet person. This class is a ton of work, owl can get out of control if you don't keep up with it. She's helpful, but she also teaches this course like it's the only one you're taking. The exams are easy, but she turns exam time into one giant bowl of stress, I wouldn't tell anyone to take her, but she's the only one that teaches this course at wsu.

Dr. Barber knows her stuff and at first thought she was too hard but just wants to weed out slackers.Class gets easier as you go.Some people say the OWL homework is useless, but I disagree.It is very helpful to do the optional stuff if you are lost, but too lengthy if you catch on quick.This is where the extra credit is!

Dr. Barber is by far the best teacher to teach chemistry at Wayne State! She explains the material thoroughly and she even makes herself available after class or during her office hours to help you if you do not understand a certain concept. If you still don't understand, go to SI. Excellent teacher and she's really nice!
She is a very hard grader. She looks for little mistakes to take your points away. I didnt hav the correct user id on owl and she didnt give me any credit for my homework even if it was all completed. She also took my points off from my test for not filling the answers in on the test sheet when i had them circled on the exam.
This was the most time consuming class I have ever taken. But I could not imagine having any other professor. She was by far the best professor I have had at WSU. Not an easy A but possible. be ready to work. She is also very approachable. So if you need help she is more then willing to sit with you.
One of the best science professors. Crystal clear when she is lecturing and her lectures are very helpful. It is not an easy class but not confusing at all. Just do the work and practice the problems and you should be fine. She takes most of her problems from the book so use it. OWL is time consuming but easy points so do it for points at least.
She is a horrible teacher. She confuses the basic of topics and a hard grader. She took "weeder" course to a whole new level. She has "OWL" which if it is not all completed you can not take the exam. If there is someone else, take them. SHE IS HORRIBLE.

Condescending. Makes use of Cengage's "OWL" website, which is glitchy and crashes every five minutes. Online homework takes forever and is more about entering things properly than actually learning something.
Boring, drags lectures out unnecessarily. Tests on things she didn't bother teaching. Exams are just annoying, must be done in pen, and each question has about a thousand parts. Find someone else!
Luckily she assigns a billion homework questions, since I've learned nothing from her pointless lectures. Glad I'm playing a ridiculous amount so that I can teach myself chemistry.
To be honest, she is a very sweet person. She is student friendly(unlike Munk) so it was a pleasure going to her office hours. However, the exams where just so hard. 6 exams total and the class average on all of them were either failing or C-. Avoid her if you want a clean transcript/GPA.
She is so nice. You will never have a professor at Wayne state that is student friendly and down to earth as her. She is tough, her exams are hard and there's a probability many will withdraw from her course. But just hang on until the end and you will end up with the grade your looking for. Goodluck!

Before this class I had a 3.9, A's in all my classes including science and math. But now I am failing this class, I've failed two exams (the only two I have ever failed). She is a friendly person but teaches at the basic level and goes very fast, then the exams have MUCH harder problems or things she never really touched on for more than 5 minutes.
One of the best professors ever! She walks you through the steps of the problems. Yes, she uses OWL but I don't think the workload is that bad (about 36 probs/wk)and it really helps bring the material together. Also, she gives you an outline of what will be on each exam AND a practice exam! If you're not doing well in her class it's your own fault.
barber was a really good prof. She was very fair and also all her lectures were very clear and she explained stuff very well. She is also super nice. The only thing I would say watch out on the exams make sure to read the directions for stupid stuff like how she wants you to circle the answers and stuff like that
Good professor, really clear and helpful. Uses iclicker for attendance, and OWL for hwk (required). Has five exams and curved one since we did really bad. Offers extra credit throughout semester which adds up. Don't like her schedule though - have an test right before the final, and finish a chapter just a day before the test on it.
Easiest class I have had in college so far. Gives study guides and practice tests before the exams. Has LOTS of extra credit opportunities. Anyone not doing well in this class aren't putting in effort...
Good professor. Tells you exactly how to pass the class. 4 exams and a final that can take the place of your lowest exam grade. Owl sucks, but overall its not a hard class.
This is my 2nd time taking the class. First time around I absolutely hated her, This time I took the night class and did much better. She is extremely helpful and very clear and approachable. She responds via email very quickly. OWL does suck, but if you stay on top of it, or do it in bits its really not bad.Do the EC as it comes and youll do fine.
Clear enough, exams are fair enough. Practice exams are helpful. OWL hw is AWFUL. She talks to her class like they're kindergartners, but she cares about her students.
She is my favorite professor of all time!! Not only does she care about her students, she also is great at teaching. I don't know why anyone wouldn't like her. Owl is long but it is useful. I was struggling at the beginning of the year. That was partly because I came from high school. She helped out a lot. The total amount of extra credit she gave the entire class was 72 points. My scores on exams were around 80%. I got a 102% on final. That and extra credit left me 1 point away from getting a 100% in the class.
This was one of the best professors that I had in a long time I actually learned chemistry.
Barber is 100% committed to the class. She is so friendly and really gets into her teaching! Her exams pretty much is her lecture. She post study guides as well. Final consist of all the questions from previous exam that the the class didn't do well on. I don't know why people are complaining she gave no extracredit. Plenty throughout the semester.

Awesome teacher!! Coming from high school, started off with a F on my first exam, but ended with a 304/300 on the final! My best advice: Do the problems over and over again! And focus, then, on the concepts! Introduced myself on day one and found out that she's a very nice person. Always helpfull. Study guides, extra sessions, all of it! Take her!
She is overall friendly, but her class is extremely difficult. The OWL homework is sometimes tedious, but are overly simple for the types of problems that were seen on the exams. Yes, there were study guides and practice exams but once again they were very simplified compared to the actual test. If you take this class make sure it is you #1priority
Took her last semester and dropped class because I was failing. My friends told me that I shouldn't have dropped it. Students with a "D" got a "B" at the end because she gave a lot of extra credit. Whatever you do..DON'T DROP THE CLASS!! It helps to have copies of previous exams from other students too. GOOD LUCK!!
Easy A. Go to every lecture, go to quiz class, and go to SI. Do the OWL thoroughly. Do the problems on the study guide. She gives you every possible means to do well in the class - if you don't get an A, it's because you didn't put in the effort.
She is a very happy and sweet prof. Very enjoyable. Work is not hard just keep up with OWLS and do the study guides. I took 2 science classes together and would LEARN everything the day before the exam and still receive an A. You need to go to class because of the clickers and hopefully you will have a great quiz leader because quiz did help.
She is one of the nicest and sweetest professors at WSU! She truly cares about her students and gives TONS of ext credit. If you do and understand the OWLS asgn and do tons of practice and extra credits there is no way you can't get an A! I HIGHLY recommend taking her class!

She is very nice&all...but the grade set up is probably the worst ever. ALL the hw is worth 1 exam. The hw is hard/due at 8am. I'm a straight A student and had to drop&retake it (she's the only prof offered). I don't know what ppl are talking about w/ extra credit. Total 20pts...1.5% of your grade. Literally. Take this at a community college!!!
Finally an instructor that wants the students to succeed!!! Great professor, very open, always willing to help the students improve. I can’t imagine a better teacher for this class! The class is not difficult, but requires a lot of time, due to the owl homework. SI meetings are a must, especially if the TA is useless (like mine!).
Attendance is MANDATORY! You must go to class, work on the problems with her, and be as awake as possible!...The lab is a joke, just copy lol. Do all the OWL HW early and for the sake of learning it not just getting it done. The exams are straight forward, strictly off of lecture! Dnt get the txt book! I got an A, you can too! Take her! Barber is hands down the best professor ever! I've had her for three different semesters of different level chemistry classes i promise she is amazing! Really sweet with a good sense of humor. She gives lots of practice exams for each exam which are very helpful because her exams are almost exactly the same or sometimes easier. Highly recommend!
If you are a non-science major who is looking to satisfy the gen ed requirement for science I would stay away from this course. Dr. Barber is a nice person, but her class is the most poorly organized course I have ever taken in 4 years of college. Long hours spent on homework and poor exam results for everyone. Non-science majors need to stay away.
Yes Dr. Barber is very sweet and approachable, and there's SI and tutors and such to help you along the way (take advantage if you can!). But the class is very demanding, OWL sucked away hours of my life and cost me a lot of sleep... And when it comes down to it the homework is only a tiny percent of your grade which is BS. Only take if necessary.
The majority of students do study and finish their work. They still fail the exams. Students that do well either took chemistry in high school, or are science majors. Those looking to satisfy the gen ed requirement for science - Take Biology.
Anyone who thinks Dr. Barber is horrible, and that this class is hard put effort into doing poorly. Dr. Barber is AMAZING. OWL may consume time, but it really helps you learn the content. The only reason I didn't get an A was my own fault. Her lectures are phenomenal, and the exams are easy! She offers a lot of extra credit at the end of the class!

Dr. B's class is not hard, she is just VERY unorganized. She just can't learn from her mistakes. Every Exam had some kind of issue, and for the final today, there was lots of issues she had to correct. The class is an easy A, but she teaches like were high school dropouts. She also takes to long examining every problem.

Don't be fooled by the people that are complaining. Dr. Barber is one of the most AMAZING professors at Wayne State University. She is so caring about her students, and does a great job ensuring that each and every student is doing as best as they can. I have had her twice, and wish I could have her for all of my other chemistry classes as well.
Great personality - VERY unorganized. She gives practice exams (which has solutions FULL of mistakes, so its not good to rely on them.). Shes always making mistakes and errors in lecture. I had 2 bad exam scores and still managed an A! OWLS will make you angry but really help in the end! Study and go to SI!

Prof Barber is an angel! (Not just because she used to be a nun either!). She made chemistry so easy and understandable! Gives TONS of extra credit and tells you exactly what she wants you to know for exams! She is SO sweet and adorable. I secretly adopted her as my grandmother. <3 her!!

She told us that the final exam, is made up of the questions from past 5 exams that we got less ten 70% on and to my surprise the final was on way more then that, her exams are hard the multiple choice is impossible to get and she goes over slide really quick so you have to go over the lecture online to get all the notes
WOW Dr. Barber, she literally made this class so easy. All one had to do for an A was the OWL and pay attention. She made it known what was expected of students on the exam by way of practice exams. The only way not to get an A in this class was by being lazy!!!
barber is GOOD, anyone that doesnt do well in this class puts effort into doing poorly. do the OWLs, do her practice tests (find old ones too, they help with practice) and GO TO QUIZ. her tests can be tricky but if you know and UNDERSTAND the material inside and out you will get an A no problem. only thing is she gives way too much online work
dr. barber is VERY clear. you dont really need the book nor the lecture audio, really just the lecture slides will get you by easily. she is very approachable and very sweet. she really wants students to succeed and learn chemistry. i would really recommend dr b. if you need help or something happens (say youre sick or so) she will be there to help
im taking dr.barber this semester and I DO NOT recommend taking her class she is very unorganized, doesnt teach anything and the amount of homework she gives every other day is RIDICOULOUS

She is a very good teacher, and this is a very difficult class. You have to put effort into it, it isn't just a simple class. But she is very knowledgeable and explains things in more simple terms. Her homework can be a lot sometimes, but it is so helpful come test time. Would definitely recommend her for Chem 1020.
I am pre-nursing and I was so nervous about this class. Dont be just study do owl and COME to the lecture. As long as you do that you will abso get a good gade. I had no previous highschool chemistry at all.
Not a bad professor. Not a great professor either. The course itself is simple if you've experienced chemistry before. This semester, there was TOO MUCH assigned homework. I can say that. Barber, again, isn't the best but will teach you enough in lecture, but don't expect what she lectures to get you a good grade. Study and review the old exams!
The lecture was mandatory to receive 'clicker' points. The homework load was WAY too much. I spent hours doing Owl assignments. You have to QUALIFY to take exams by completing 80% of homework which is RIDICULOUS! Take with another professor. Oh and lab is long and brutal.
I had her as a sub once and didn't really like her that much at first, but after having her as a professor, she's great. Offers a lot of extra credit, and the final exam is composed of questions from old exams, which is great. She gives study guides which are super helpful. You need to put the effort to do well. Too much homework though ugh.
Dr. Barber was an amazing Chemistry teacher. I hated chem in high school, but the way Dr. Barber explained things definitely made the concepts click. Her use of clicker questions makes sure you aren't lost. I didn't use the book at all, I used her notes and the old practice exams and I did great.

She is an amazing professor. I can say the best in Chemistry at Wayne. Anyone who complains about her is just lazy. Do the homework and go to lecture, you will get an A. I absolutely loved her and this class. I don't like chemistry but she made you understand the material whether you liked it or not. Class wasn't easy but she's very helpful
Everything is based off a 2 sites that are frustrating to use. Homework on these tend to be due prior to it being covered in lecture, so you are teaching yourself a majority of the time. She tends to waste time during the hour long lecture addressing issues not related to chemistry. When she DOES teach a lecture, she is clear and understandable.
If you want an A, focus on her study guides/practice tests she creates and go over her lecture slides. ALEKS was the worst homework website ever, though. If you don't do your homework by x time before the test, you get a 0 on it until the semester ends. She gives extra credit at the end. Overall, she was very clear and explained chem well.
This class demands TIME MGMT. ALEKS takes forever, if you try to guess. Read the book, attend lecture and it's not so bad. DO ALEKS FIRST THEN DO OWL. She makes sure you know what to do on the exams so GO TO CLASS. The practice exams help, and you can challenge qualification, so TAKE IT ANYWAY. She should be the only prof for Chem. Shes the best.
LOVE THIS CLASS! I am surprised she doesn't have higher ratings...she was easy! Just stay caught up with Aleks and OWL (dont complain about it if your wasting time on facebook, twitter, etc.) It does take time, but I learned most of the material from Aleks anyways. GOOD LUCK, even though you really dont need it ! =D
VERY disorganized likes doling out assignments not realizing that students have other classes despite her own. You have to be "qualified" for tests and exams. Homework does not correlate to what she teaches in class.
Ludicrous homework load(think 10-20 mandatory hours PER WEEK), uses TWO clunky annoying online homework systems(ALEKS and OWL), which you must keep up on or receive automatic zeros on the exams. Maybe Dr. Barber thinks her students will get better grades by micromanaging them?
She is a fair teacher. Clearly understands the topic and is very intelligent, but it is a little bit all over the place, literally. She walks around the room during lecture and she loves to use her "mental model." As far as the exams go, they're easy if you know what you r doing. LOTS OF HW:positive: Lots of practice & negative: We have no life.
The class itself is very easy. However, Dr. Barber often assigns homework before it is taught in class, which is awful, because you have to do all the homework correctly and on time to qualify for the exams, and there is a lot! She also does not respond to emails promptly, if ever.

Lectures are useless, bogs you down with tons of homework and has way too many exams. Know how to do the homework and you will be fine for exams. Homework is harder than exam problems. Not a bad course but do not expect lecture to help at all.
ALEKS and Owl take up about 15 hours a week of your time. Be prepared to devote your entire life to this class. The class and its concepts are easy however the exam problems are so tricky and hard that it makes it terrible. sample exams given do not really do much good. Professor Barber is such a sweet lady, but the class is terrible
Like everyone says, she gives a ton of homework. Doing it; however, pays off big time. She gives you a lot "filler" points for it and provides many extra credit opportunities. If you go to class, quiz section, and do your homework, you can get an A in this class fairly easily, but studying BEFORE the exams is critical.
I did not like Dr. Barber. Her lectures were not helpful and she has a ridiculous policy where if you do not finish one or two homework assignments, you are not allowed to take the test for that unit. This can greatly mess up your grade. Never answered questions in a helpful way. Save yourself & AVOID!!

Hands down easy professor. This class is like high school chemistry with more content. If you took AP Chemistry or any kind at all. This class will be easy with many opportunities to bring you grade up.
After taking 1040 with her and taking 1225 with her this summer All I can say is that 1040 was fair but, 1225 was only somewhat fair since the exams had 8 questions and 6 multiple questions she pulled out of the blue. Other then the exams shes a great teacher take her!
This class was not that hard if you go to quiz class and have a good TA, but I don't recommend taking it with another difficult class because the workload is insane! She gave us well over 4 hours of homework every other night.
The workload is insane!!! She does give a lot of extra credit. She doesn't usually respond to emails because she usually recieves too many. She is really nice and she teaches really well, however, the workload is insane and she will cause you some problem during the semester, even if you do everything correctly. Good luck and GBU.
The way her class works is you have to qualify for each exam by completing online homework. Her midterm exams are super easy just like the practice exams! If you don't qualify for an exam, your final exam score can replace that midterm you missed. With that said, her final exam is RIDICULOUSLY hard and can screw your grade! QUALIFY FOR EVERY EXAM

Very tough class. The material is not that difficult but her Exams are very detailed. You HAVE to know all of the material. However, she is very helpful and gives a lot of extra credit to compensate. Do ALL of the homework, attend all of the classes, DON'T read the book, and you will be ok.
Do NOT recommend this professor. The textbook is useless and there's no point going to class, she takes up the whole class doing 1 question. She gives out a lot of extra credit, but SHE HAS THE WORST GRADING SCHEME EVER. She'll take 5 marks off for sig digs, units, or just silly mistakes. Almost gives NO part marks, and not enough time on the exams
She is a Good professor. She teaches well. The grading is a little tough so you have to be careful in answering the questions. If you have trouble, I recommend you go to her office hours, she is very helpful.

Good at teaching, provides practice exams that are essential to passing, and uses OWLv2, an online learning program that is pretty helpful. Also uses ALEKS, an extremely frustrating and time-eating website that helps very little. Tests graded too strictly, but questions are fair.
She never replies to emails, she's very hard to get in touch with. She doesn't like to hear students out. There is way too much homework and if you start off bad you have to fight to death to get a good grade.
Very good teacher but a very time consuming class. Very helpful, especially if you go to her office hours. Never answers her emails but gives a lott of extra credit, which does take time.
OWLs are time consuming but helpful in learning material. Besides for the mandatory 5 assessments, ALEKS is time consuming and unnecessary unless you want the EC. Know how to do practice exam problems- exam will be similar to them. Overall easy class if you do practice exams. Many EC opportunities. Go to class for clicker points!! Helpful professor
She is the worst professor that I have ever experienced. She makes very little effort in class. She is always making mistakes and never corrects them all her lectures seem like they are being made up on the spot. Home work is your best friend. She has turned the class to an online class because her lectures pointless and confusing.
We learned more form OWL than Dr Barber but she was really nice. She offered a lot of extra credit. The class wasn't hard overall. Would definitely take again.
The amount of homework for this class is astounding. Multiple hours spent on homework, trying to qualify for her exams. Her exams are 8 short answer and 6 multiple choice. They are a mixture of easy questions and very difficult questions. Her lectures are an hour of lack luster performance. I only went to get the clicker points. Read! Read!
She BARELY responds to emails; maybe ONCE out of the 5 I sent. The reason I sent so many is because she lost my exam regrades, so I couldn't study off of them for the FINAL. She talks in a condescending tone and makes mistakes during lecture. You can study for hours for the exam and still fail. ALWAYS had A's in chem in HS and CHM 1040 before this.
Dr. Barber was an ok professor - she was super excited about the material, but I tended to teach myself a lot of the material if I wanted to keep up with all the online homework (DO IT!). She's definitely there for you, and always checks how well everyone understands the material before moving on. Would recommend.
Dr. Barber is a wonderful professor. If you do your homework and take advantage of all of the extra credit opportunities you will pass with an A. Also, make sure you review all of her practice exams that she gives you, they look very identical to her tests. The final exam was all of the questions that the class scored below 70% on all other exams.
She is an amazing professor all around. She always had a positive attitude and made sure to push her students to success. Her teaching technique gets you to discuss problems with each other, so make friends in the class!

Dr. Barber is a wonderful Chemistry professor. YES, she does assign what may seem to be an absurd amount of homework. BUT, She's doing it for your own benefit--don't be lazy! This is a pre-req for Organic Chemistry where homework is optional yet essential to understanding the material--she prepares her students for their future Chem courses!
The homework can be long and tedious, but you have to do it if you want to do well in the tests.
Her lectures are not helpful. The online homework will save you as far as learning and points goes. If you do not want to do the homework, youre going to fail.
She teaches the beginning chem, if you think she's hard-change your major. She's awesome! Teachers at a research schools don't care about teaching (only there for research), she does! If you ask, she will help! A lot of hw but it helps you, too much to teach in one lecture. I love her, wish she taught more classes! She made me love chemistry!
Lots of homework, but it really helps. Use iClicker2 in class for participation points. She won't let you have your cell phone out. If you're struggling, definitely use the free tutoring 1 on 1 service at success dot wayne dot edu. The book is not required, but online access code called OWL is.
I took this class twice- withdrew the first time because I was on the verge of failing, got an A the second time around. She doesn't sugar coat things, you want an A? Work for it. Practice for exams using previous semester's exams. Make OWLs and ALEKS your life. She gives lots of extra credit so do it! Go to lecture and quiz class, they help ALOT.
There is alot of homework in this course but it helps alot in understanding the material. The exams are not hard she usually posts previous exams. If you can do those than you can get at least a B. She is clear but the class has 300 people so some of the things you have to study on your own or get some help with. For engineers theres no quiz class
If you took chemistry in high school, CHM 1020 will be a breeze. Haven't studied for either exam yet and received almost 100% on both exams. She really does care about her students, and is more than willing to help. Also, she grades attendance based on the I-Clicker participation.
Dr. Barber is a chem nut and she makes the class enjoyable. You have to pay attention in lecture and pay attention to the assigned homework because it can get confusing but she offers a lot of extra credit. Tests are pretty tough too but many practice tests are available. I wish I an take her class again.
Easy class but the amount of homework is ridiculous (the homework does not help by the way).
This class was very frustrating for me because she glides over material so quickly, and during class you barely have any time to write down notes because she goes through slides so fast. Also, she will put questions on her tests that has NOTHING to do with the chapters mentioned. She isn't very helpful/approachable during office hours.
Challenging course, although Dr. Barber was very helpful along the road. Tests are tough and require a lot of studying. Questions appear in format not gone over in class and require deep thought. Setup of the course was extremely helpful. Lectures are posted on echocenter, which helps a lot. Use of iclickers also helped us interact and understand.
The material is difficult, but she offers so much extra credit that it's impossible not to get an A if you do it. ALEKS is tedious, but it helps you learn and she'll give more extra credit than initially stated so DO IT! I've gotten a B on every exam but i'm ending with an A due to EC. She expects A LOT from her students but gives you so many chances to bring your grade up. Don't get behind on homework and don't be pessimistic, it really helps you learn the material. dr barber is the sweetest, nicest, most amazing professor i have ever had. she makes her lectures entertaining, constantly gives the class enough practice when we don't understand something, and is always available to help. her tests are some of the easiest i've ever taken. show up and ask questions if needed and you'll get an A.
Dr. Barber is amazing! I took AP Chemistry in high school and although I did well I didn't actually learn. With Dr. Barber's enthusiasm towards chemistry, it's hard not to learn. ALEKS is so annoying but it is worth a lot of EC. OWL is truly helpful so do it. I personally thought her practice exams were very helpful. You get an A if you work for it
Dr. Barber is a good teacher. If you put in the work, you'll end up successful. Gives 5 exams, plus final. Hard marker. I once got 3/15 on a question because I forgot to convert grams to kilograms.

Barber Mary Frances is one of the best professors you can hope for. She is enthusiastic about her subject, great at teaching, and gives great lectures. There is a lot of homework, but homework is essential to fully understanding any subject. If you have a chance to have Barber as your professor, don't pass it up because you'll learn a great deal.

MC on exams can be tricky but problems are straight forward. 5 exams, can replace one w/ final. At the end of the semester, I had 80 points of ec and ended with 103% in class. MARY FRAN IS AMAZING!!!
Class was horribly organized. Lectures did not prepare for homework or tests. She rearranged the due date for homework so much, I missed 4 assignments. Participation points through iClicker for lecture. Labs were tedious and not fun. Expensive textbook with no real use. Talked to the class like we were children. Does not explain material well.
Dr. Barber is an excellent teacher who really cares about her students. She does her best to help you if you are willing to put in the time and effort. She teaches in a very clear and easy to follow way, one of the best chem teachers! The multiple choice on the tests are tough so study from the book from those, and her practice exams really help.

If you attend lectures and put in like 2 hours a week (which is nothing) you should be more than fine!! only thing that is annoying is how long it takes her to put in the final exam score, it has been a week and it still isn't in. overall GREAT!
Dr. Barber is amazing. She is so sweet and definitely cares about her students. The class material may be difficult if you've never been exposed to chemistry before, but if you have, its an easy A. She goes through everything and doesn't test anything that hasn't been talked about in class. She's very understanding. Overall, wonderful.
Dr. Barber is a very clear and helpful teacher. She makes sure that when someone is confused she thoroughly reviews the material to ensure success. Do the work, participate, and review the material consistently and you will do just fine. Lab is incredibly easy, as well.
Dr Barber is an okay teacher. Don't expect her to teach you all the materials, YOU have to do the reading and the tons of homework she gives out. One thing I really disliked is she only teaches concepts and asks us clicker questions all the time without really teaching, it gets old. Aleks is gonna kick your butt, and lots of extra credit involved.
She gives out so much extra credit its almost impossible to fail. I failed two exams, but she gave us the opportunity to replace two exam scores with our final. I would've had a C grade but thanks to her extra credit and exam replacement I received an A. But don't expect it to be an easy A, actually try because exams get harder every semester.

She gives a lot of extra credit BUT, her multiple choice questions come out of nowhere and they are very difficult. In class she goes over the easy stuff but right before the exam she introduces new topics which are challenging and she puts them on the exam. The practice exam solutions are not always right which is hard to use to study for.
Dr. Barber is the most considerate professor and truly cares about your mental health. She's super kind and her lectures are very participation-heavy but she knows her stuff. Gives tons online homework but not impossible and a lot of it has attainable extra credit attached. The EC saved my life so always do it. This class taught me how to study.
In general, this class was manageable despite the amount of homework given (i.e Aleks). Lectures were kind of dry but attendance is mandatory for iclicker points. Exams were fine but the multiple choice questions were the worst part of the test. Overall, the best part about this class is the amount of extra credit is given!
Dr. Barber talks to you like you are 5 years old!! She assigns an unreasonable amount of hw (3+ hrs daily) Tests are worded completely ambiguously & grading scale is harsh (-6pts for sig fig error) Cost 150+ just to do online homework from 3 different sites! Her lectures include drawn out problems & group discussions to come to the right answer.
Dr Barber was a very kind lady but I would not recommend her for Gen Chem. Made the class 100x more difficult then it needed to be and gave ATLEAST 3 hours of homework a day on 2 different websites. Our lecture class had to drop 2 exams (of 5) because how hard they were. Orgo is easier then Gen chem. Save yourself the headache and take elsewhere
Dr. Barber is probably the nicest professor at Wayne State. She has the best heart. She is very good at teaching her material. She does make her exams a little tough, but that because the material is tough. However, she compensates for them by giving extra credit opportunities. Overall, I was very happy with having her as my professor.
This class was way harder than it should have been. Although Dr. Barber cares about her students and gives lots of extra credit, it doesn't take away from the fact that the exams are VERY difficult. When you take this class, make sure your other classes are easy; the homework was brutal.
WORST professor I've ever had. The class is comprised of homework, exams, the final & participation. If you don't have 12+ hours to dedicate to homework a week, take this class at OU or a local community college. She uses ALEKs, which is the BIGGEST, most FRUSTRATING waste of time. Lecture is pointless. Exam averages are typically 65%. Good luck.
To make the "extra credit" clear: for the class, you have mandatory homework assignments, totaling to about 10-12 hours a week already. Her extra credit, which is irrelevant and worth only 10 POINTS per assignment (class is on a 1,900 point system), will take you 3-4 extra hours a week. If you are a busy student, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER.
I did all of the extra credit, I finished all the Aleks until the very end in which I missed a deadline and therefore lost 35 pts, did all of the owl homework but because of the test difficulty I'm still barely passing. She offers extra credit but compared to the amount of work it requires and minimal amount of points it is it barely makes a dent.
SHe is the best. She was very helpful and kind when I would go to office hours. HEr exams and grading criteria were very difficult. STUDY hard and you'll do well. I managed to pull off an A-
Difficult class ESPECIALLY if it is paired with another science class. Make sure to go to all of the lectures, Try to get 100% of ALEKS, AND do it piece by piece instead at all at once at the end. Exams are difficult since you need to really understand the concepts and also master the free response questions and how they could be manipulated.
Your best friend in this class will be the previous released exams from peer mentors and friends. Also, do ALL of the homework from Aleks and OWL. I recommend taking photos or writing down notes for Aleks and starting as early as possible. The content itself isn't difficult-- Barber likes to throw in some challenging questions, though.
Its possible to get an A but it takes a lot of work. I recommend getting the ALEKS assignments done early. And to take the knowledge checks seriously. Take pictures of each topic so it help you do well on the knowledge checks. Her exams are beyond hard so you really have to know the material in order to do well. Take advantage of all the EC opps!
This class is extremely difficult. The course load was super heavy. If you can avoid it, do not pair this class with another science class. Dr. Barber is very unorganized and makes this class way harder than it needs to be. Exam's are extremely difficult. You never know what to expect when it comes to the multiple choice portion.
The workload is extremely heavy. The multiple choice on her tests is nearly impossible to get right at times. Unfair grader sometimes.
Dr. Barber genuinely cares about her students. Yes, I agree, the exams are tough, but she gives a lot of extra credit to compensate for it. If you go to the SI sessions, discussion, and peer mentor sessions, you will do fine. I nearly failed every exam, but passed with a B+. (I did not do much extra credit). Office hours are helpful as well.
Barber is a good professor for the most part, because she taught me how to study. She is challenging. You have to work for your grade. She gives a lot of homework, which wasn't very helpful. The exams are rough if you did not prepare at least a week in advance, lectures were easier than exams. She is kind of rude. Though, I would recommend her.

Workload of this class is insane. There have been times that I've had to commit 2.5-3 hours for one homework assignment. She doesn't adapt her teaching style to help people that can't just read something and understand right away. Talks to you like you're 5 years old. Basically will be teaching yourself. Just take it at a community college.
This class is not hard, but if you dont put in the effort, like any other science class, it wont be the easiest. I never did any of the Aleks, but did well on the exams. Dont memorize the math, understand the chemistry and you will do fine. She is an amazing professor, and always willing to help students. PRACTICE

If alot of people get it wrong, she just tells us to talk to each other instead of actually explaining it. Homework load is ridiculous. The exams are crazy hard to.

Before Barber I loved chemistry. Because of this woman I now hate chemistry with a burning passion. 3 hour homework assignments for 5 points. Worst teacher I have ever had, retiring should be considered.
Lots of work! The homework is very time consuming & expect to pay $200 for the websites, rip-off! Her lectures did not help. TA for discussion was more helpful. Still have to teach yourself. Lots of extra credit available. Study in advance for exams. Refer to previous exams from friends or peer mentors, those saved me. MC on exams are difficult.
Terrible professor. Messed students up a lot during exams. Also had no solid time schedule. The only things that can save you from this course are the peer mentor sessions + old exams from previous takers.
Not a good prof. Multiple choice on exams are awful and there is no way to study. If you are a good student, the multiple choice determines whether you get an A or B on an exam. Lots of extra credit but 15 hours of homework weekly. The material is not tough but Barber makes it tough. Final exam was witchcraft and I got an A- because of it.

Barber makes this class way harder than it has to be. The amount of work needed for this class makes you want to change your major. There are 3 homework sites, thats going to cost you $250 alone. Lecture has 5 exams plus a final, and lab has weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final. There is extra credit, but only enough to cover one poor exam grade.
Professor Barber is the WORST professor I've ever had. She made Chemistry 100X harder than it needs to be. BUT, if you want to pass: don't go to lecture - stay home & take notes off of the recorded lectures at your own pace. Go to peer mentoring & discussion. Practice her problems. Do all the hw (for credit, you'll need those points) & do the EC.
Going to class or skipping class does not impact your learning at all. Just go to the SI sessions, do Aleks, Owl, and the exam study guide practice exams and you can do decent. Doing all the extra credit opportunities is your passing lifeline. Dr. Barber does know how to teach but purposely doesnt teach anything so we can "learn to teach ourselves"
Really not a good professor, you have to study by yourself and the homework is really not helpful. I recommend taking this class at a CC. Much easier, and honestly for most people this class will be irrelevant. She seems to be so focused on gen chem that she fails to make it applicable to careers.
BRUH. You can get 100% on every question but if you don't know a few multiple choice you're already down a letter grade, which if you haven't figured out her MC designed to screw you over. If she asks "okay, click in a grade of how well you understand (insert topic)" and majority will say C or D and she will respond with "Awesome!" and moves on
Not gonna bother talking about how bad she is. Make sure you review each lecture, stay on top of homework (DO NOT MISS THE EXTRA CREDIT), study in groups, get help from mentors, get old exams, and don't wait last minute. The lab is pretty easy.

Very difficult class, you could come out of there learning nothing, when I took the class about 74% of the class failed, with about 10 As and the rest of the people barely passing, be prepared, plus shes a little too enthusiastic, gets kind of annoying
She's garbage and you have to learn everything yourself. Make sure to prepare yourself for countless hours of homework and vague tests.

Awful professor. Lectures are incredibly boring and she doesn't teach much material. You basically are on your own to learn a very hard subject. Online homework load is ridiculous, on average about 15 hours a week (I'm not joking). Tests every other week, very very hard. I would not recommend this professor. Would never take again.
Absolute worst teacher. 12+ hours of hw A WEEK & she is not shy to admit it either. You'll drown in the work before you have a chance to actually study test material. Take at a CC if possible. Lots of EC but again, hours of work that could be better spent actually preparing for exams.
Her lectures are terrible! She will literally spend 15 minutes on one graph and how to read it or how to study. Everything must be learned by youserlf. She is not helpful during lecture and always messes up with her words then gets the whole class confused. Not only do you have OWL due before each class but you have ALEKS dur before each exam.
Barber spent half of her lecture going into detail about how to study for class. She spoke to us as if we were in 2nd grade; you will gain nothing from going to lecture besides clicker points. There's a lot of online hw that takes up 10+ hours a week. Overall, her class was moderately difficult but incredibly frustrating because of her methods.
I have nothing bad to say about Dr. Barber she will bend over backwards to explain stuff to you so don't be afraid to ask for help
She covers only minimal basic content in class, with most of the actual, difficult exam topics covered in discussion or not at all. She goes at a slow pace and treats us like children. There is a huge amount of homework. The one good thing I can say about her is that she at least teaches (even if it is super elementary).
The class is punishing. You'll have homework due on OWL before each lecture, and tens of hours of homework due on ALEKS before each exam. On top of that, the exams are much more difficult than anything thats EVER covered in lecture. Get ready to be your own professor, because that's how this class is. You have to do it yourself.
The issue with Barber's class is she teaches in a different style than she grades. She'll spend class explaining basic problems PAINFULLY slowly but neglecting the underlying concepts. Then she acts shocked when students don't know how to apply concepts to other types of questions on the exam. If you want an A, spend time with the book.
If your taking this class with her be prepared to spend hours on hw alone. Its hard to manage to study for the exam and do the hw because there was so much. She does give extra credit and if you use old exams it will help. But nonetheless her exams are extremely difficult and she makes it harder than previous year. Also her multiple choice is hard
She shows us all the easy problems in class, making me believe I have the concepts down, and then grades harshly on the exams (at least my TA who grades mine is harsh). I went from mostly As to not sure if i'm passing.
Dr. Barber was a great professor. She explains concepts during lecture very well and I would recommend going through her lectures again to understand course concepts. Although there were a couple of lectures where she mixed up her concepts, but stuff happens. There's a lot of online homework, so expect to spend quite a bit of time on it.
Dr. Barber knows chemistry and recommend going to her lectures. Partial credit is not really given on the tests and the multiple choice is hard. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Go to the peer mentor study sessions. Lots of online homework that is not very helpful. Go to lectures, go to study sessions, and do the extra credit and you'll be fine
Dr. Barber is actually nice little old lady outside of class, I know a lot of students hated her because of her mistakes she makes during lecture. For all of those haters, don't rely everything on the professor, do your homework and prepare before class. Here's a few tip for Y'all: Put everything on ALEKS, then peer mentors, and then the class :)
During our first exam, Dr Barber had me show her my OneCard like normal. However when I showed it to her, she accused me of not being me. She said I was too pale to be myself. I took this class in the middle of Winter and my picture was from the summer. I then had to show her my license and she still accused me of not being myself.
you have to teach yourself you will not learn anything during lecture because you are too focused to get the clicker points right. she is a nice lady but doesn't teach very well. aleks takes a lot of time to do and is too much work for one class
I dont care what anyone says, this class is easy and the only thing is the professor that sucks. Just study and practice and you should get an A, also do all the extra credit. EASY CLASS, people stress for no reason cuz they dont study and put in all the time and effort like SMART people do.
Dr. Barber gives you all the tools you need to succeed in this class. Needless to say, it's incredibly challenging, and you'll fail if you don't dedicate enough time towards homework and studying. She's very pleasant overall and truly does wish to see all of her students succeed (That's why she offers so much extra credit!).
Dr. Barber is a very good professor, if you are serious about chem. You shouldn't come into this class with a notion of doing little to no work and getting an easy A, or you'll end up failing or dropping. Online homework is very, very long (100+ hours per semester), but it will be worth it in the end. Overall, tough course, but excellent prof!
Very tricky. She makes class seem so easy and then asks the most difficult questions on exams. Lab is so easy and there is soooooo much online hw. It is such a waste of a class. Will never take her again.
I had a D exam average. Her exams are hard but just do ALEKS and OWL on time and so you can to get those extra credit points. You can get up to 50 extra credit points plus the random opportunities through lecture and the last minute ec at the end of the semester. It's homework heavy but ALEKS and OWL save your grade. That boy Barber cares <3
I got my period during an exam and she refused to let me go and take care of it. So not only did I fail the exam because her exam questions are super hard, but I also leaked! Everyone avoid the 4th row 3rd seat in deroy to your right
Barber gives a ton of extra credit in this class, which is a great grade booster! She teaches well, but she teaches more basic concepts and has the difficult concepts get explained through homework (a method that was frustrating). However, the exams are mostly straightforward, even though the homework is excessive. She's not a bad prof, overall.
CHM1220 will be your hardest class. And by that, I mean it. The fact is, Dr. Barber is one tough grader. Lecture is only a very small part of success, don't rely solely on it. GET ALL PAST EXAMS, do them all, see what you got wrong. And the loads of HW will get you a grade, but only so far. Still, I love (and indulge) in Dr. Barber's notoriety!
Be prepared to work in this class and attend lecture, there are many different components that contribute to your final grade. Do all of the extra credit that you can because you will need it. Read the textbook to help you out with the multiple choice portion of the exam and use the sample exams to help you review. Pace yourself with ALEKS!

Dr. Barber cares about her students. The class is difficult because the material is difficult but she makes sure that everyone understands before moving on. There is a lot of homework through Aleks and Owl, but as long as you stay on top of it, it never gets too overwhelming. I would take Dr. Barber again for sure.
She is not a bad professor per se. She provides significant amounts of extra credit, which are a huge grade booster! However, she does have the tendency to allow homework do the teaching, and have class act as a review. There's a ton of homework too. Despite this, her exams are straightforward and she provides really helpful study guide materials.
Lots of people complain about Dr. Barber because they don't want to put in the work to succeed. If you put in the work and pay attention during lectures, the class isn't that bad. She legitimately cares for her students and I feel that her lectures were very good. Just make sure to stay ahead on your homework and study for the exams.
Her powerpoints are full of errors, there are 4 online materials you need to buy that cost more than 70 dollars each, and one of those programs (Aleks) will take up all of your time and not help you on the test. Take this class (and all of your sciences) at a community college.
This class is WAY too in depth for gen chem. I've never done so much homework for a class. The material is not super hard but I can't study when we have so much homework. Dr. Barber is a good lecturer but I wouldn't take her again.
Don't listen to the people who say this class is hard. I never do well in science classes, but I attended every single CHM 1220 lecture and paid attention. She gave many extra credit chances and was fair to students who put in effort and actually tried in her class. I finished with an A! One of my favorite science classes I have ever taken.
Dr Barber is a very sweet lady You can tell she is a very caring person. She also teaches other things that will help in life aside from chemistry such as, how one should study, how one can sheldule their time. She is a real gem

In all honesty she seems like a wonderful person, but the amount of work she gives out is not helpful and made it really hard for me to actually study. I spent so much time doing irrelevant work on Aleks, it's the reason I almost failed. Plus I spent almost 300 on class codes
Tons of HW. ALEKS is going to be your biggest nightmare, if you want to finish it on time, you have to work on it everyday before the deadline. On the bright side, it helps you with her exams, which are hard. And HW is a huge part of your grade, so do all of it. Barber is intimidating, but she cares for her students. Gives out lots of extra credit.
she's rude and irresponsible. She really doesn't care for her lab students. she never replies to her emails and she's always late to the day of the exam. If you go to her office hours, she spends the time on her computer instead of paying attention to what you're saying. I wish she cared a little more for her lab students.
She gave me such a hard time. She dumbs down her lectures so much which make them so dreadful to sit through and her exams don't correlate to her lectures. They are so much more complicated than the way she teaches the information. She also never answers emails and her grading is unfair. We won't even know our grades until next semester.
She is a tough professor. Never replies to emails. If you ever miss anything of great points, she wont let you take it later even though you may fail for that. Exams are so hard even for a lab exam. Will give a very short time with so many questions including written, tough reactions, math, chemistry basics etc. everything is very strict on exams.
Make sure you look at your exam score because she sometimes adds your score wrong. She makes many mistakes You have to stay on top of every single homework assignment and study everyday for exams. You must learn to control your stress and attend tutoring if need be. She's unforgiving when it comes to minor mistakes in exams and she will blame you.
Apart from the insane amount of homework and the class being very disorganized, 1220 is just your average college course. On the bright side though, Dr. Barber does do her best to make sure her students are prepared for exams with lots of good resources. She also offers lots of EC opportunities so take advantage of that.
Barber knows her stuff. Her lectures are clear & are recorded which is a plus. The amount of homework though is ridiculous. She has you pay for two separate homework services, ALEKS &Owl. There was never enough time for the exams, which would lend into many mistakes. I got over 100% on the final only because I had longer than 40 min to complete it.

The final was super easy, it was only the questions under 70% from exams. overall, its easy to get an A if you follow her slides and focus on them. Alot of EC,Discussions were very useful !.
Dr. Barber is a very organized professor whose lectures are the most important part of the class. She is very good at explaining the course material. This course is very homework heavy but it is an easy way to increase your overall grade while practicing important course topics.
Professor Barbers grading criteria is not fair at all, most of the times she messes up with the exam grades, it was so frustrating when it happened to one of my exams. But overall her lectures are great, attendance is very important as she my ask questions in the class which is required to be answered with a iclicker will get some points for that.

Professor Barber is the WORST CHEM PROFESSOR at WSU. I am usually a great student in science classes&have never done so horribly on exams. Her class&teaching style is very unorganized. Her grading&exams are unfair. The workload is crazy. She gives e.c. but it barely does anything for your grade& she sucks at responding to emails. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Dr. Barber is a very interesting professor. I found class to be completely useless, but she requires it for participation. You'll end up teaching yourself everything anyways. ALEKS is the absolute worst thing you will have to do. Takes up way too much time, but it offers extra credit. If you want to do well, you REALLY have to put in the efforts.
the hardest professor Ive taken. The class average on exams was between 60 to 70 percent almost every exam but she blamed us for poor studying. She showed up late to class and late on exam days. Gives ridiculous amounts of online homework and is not very helpful in office hours. The best I can say is shes generous with extra credit.

Lots of homework and lecture isn't particularly captivating. I found ALEKS to be helpful, but probably not worth my time as far as learning efficiently. Practice exams were very helpful. She was often late to class and office hours. Very interesting lady if you get to talk to her a bit. Extra credit was a big help. You have to work for your grade.
Dr. Barber doesn't deserve all the grief she is given. She is very knowledgeable on the subject and if you follow her advice, you WILL succeed. There is a lot of homework, but if used properly, it really helps you understand course material. Offers LOTS of extra credit. She did make some mistakes with grading but made sure to correct them.
Dr Barber, was okay, personally I wouldn't take her again but thats because of preference. 5 tests + the final so no test will make or break you, plus she drops whatever test has the lowest score. Take a discussion section even if you take 1225, it helps a ton! We did ALEKS in our semester so you definitely had to keep up with that to do well.
as a lab coordinator, ive never met someone so disorganized. constantly giving us wrong due dates, emailing as at 11pm for assignments due at midnight. awful at navigating canvas; listed 5 syllabi for her other classes, but not ours. our webassign assignments mark answers incorrect even when she gives us the data. this lab is an absolute mess

WSU labs are always a mess, but this was insane; we got sent an assignment to be due at midnight at 11:30 pm. Then the next day she said she had the wrong due date. This happened constantly
Most unorganized class you will ever take. Barber is not accessible outside of class (seldom does she respond to emails). Best way to do well on exams is practice problems from Canvas and old exams. Don't bother with the book. Seek help from a peer mentor if needed. Gives a fair amount of e.c. Weekly hw takes forever (my average was 8.5 hrs).
Shes incredibly unorganized. Never emails back and most of the class is self taught. Lectures arent bad but its mandatory and mostly self teaching which isnt hard. Incredibly disorganized. Workload is ridiculous for a ONE CREDIT class. Entered incorrect final grades for almost the entire class. After receiving emails from many students about her mistake she then sent out a group email basically saying you got what you got. Later on she realized she had made a mistake. Extremely frustrating.

I took Dr. Barber for two semesters, and both times she 'forgot to grade my final' and temporarily gave me F's. I emailed her a bunch of times, she was always unreachable, I had to email the director in both cases. If there's another professor you can take please do so, save yourself the trouble. She is careless and will not admit to her mistakes.

There has to be a 2nd coming of Jesus for Dr. Barber to respond to any email. the class is completely based on Aleks. The exams are all graded by Aleks and not reviewed by any human and there is no partial credit on exams. The first 2 exams were fair, but the 3rd exam had 15 multiple step questions with only 50 minutes to complete the exam.
This is all:Dr. Barber is terrible. Doesnt offer partial credit although u submit yr work for exams, ignored students' accommodations, overall very rude. She tries to be intimidating, but it doesnt work. Impossible to get a hold of, does not care whatsoever. ALEKS is a sadistic workload. Doesnt give enough time for online exams. Run the other way.
