Went over EVERYTHING in class. Did lots of discussions and was really really nice. She was really approachable and made her classes as interesting as history can be. I took 112 from her, and I am taking 111 because she is teaching it.
Really nice and helpfull. The class has only a few requirements. The hardest thing is a research paper and that only has to be 5 to 7 pages. Take a class from her. She tries really hard to make it interesting and it works.
she made me like history!

Excellent teacher. Very thorough, yet relaxed. She makes class enjoyable to attend for each class and makes the class interesting for those interested in history as well as those turned off by it. I also took Hist 111 and Hist 112 from her.
The Women's History class covers a lot of good material. Mary knows a lot about the subject and offers good suggestions.
I loved this class. She was very organized, and made history fun! If you don't take one of her classes...you are making a terrible mistake!;)
nice woman, great class informative but not an overload. you will be doing yourself a favor
Mary is the reason that I am majoring in History! She made it so much fun and made you want to learn.
Good teacher. Clear, organized, fun. Balanced perspective and willing (wanting) to engage in discussion. Connects with class. I would highly recommend her class.
Mary was a good teacher. She's pretty laid back and likes class discussions. She tries to make the lessons interesting and does a good job (considering the subject). She is a hard grader though, and the tests are long, but she always gives lots of extra credit opportunities. All in all, she's a pretty cool teacher.
Good teacher, has a tendancy to go off on tangents a bit. Generally an easy class, she lets you make up any test that you miss except for the final

I really enjoyed Mary's class. I felt like she really wants you to understand the material, and the tests and assigments were always challenging but not too hard. She is very clear about what your grade is based o. This is the first class I have read a fictional book and really enjoyed it, I read it in 2 days. I highly recomend this class.

she is very laid back and approachable. the class is fairly interesting, but can be a little boring if you are not involved with discussions. tests aren't too bad and she offers extra credit.
Mary is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She is very laid back and makes history interesting. She focuses more on the issues and understanding what they were about, rather than just facts and dates. As long as you do your best work and get involved in class discussions, you will do well in this class.
mary is an amazing teacher and woman. her class is very interesting and she utilizes many different mediums to teach from. i highly recommend her. she also wrote me a great letter of recomendation. mary rules!
She's so cool! Laidback but still effective, on top of her shizz but not a hard ass, intelligent but not domineering, she's a wonderful teacher. Friendly, understanding and caring, a good teacher and better person.
I liked Mary a lot. She's a real down to earth perosn, and you get a sense that she genuinly cares about her students. She wasn't as excited about her subject as I'd hoped one would be, but that's just her "laid back" ( as everyone seems to say) style. OH!! and she plays sweet a** music during the tests!! Oh, writing this makes me miss that class.
excellent clarity, and just a cool person!
Mary was always very helpful with everything. She does expect hardwork out of her students.
Ms. Haberman is cool and very unbiased. Too many teachers today weigh heavily on issues that THEY care about. Mary goes over EVERYTHING, she's also a pretty damn cool person too, good sense of humor!
I had a hardship last quarter and Mary was not very understanding of that. She was biased against letting me make up the work and told me very bluntly that she didn't want to grant me additional make up time. Other teachers were more understanding and allowed me to make up the work. Type of person who will ask for help but won't give help.
I did not care for this teacher at all.
Covers the material but wasted a lot of class time and can be lazy. Does not come prepared to class. Tends to ramble in lecture so recommend just printing the PowerPoints out and taking notes off of that. A few tests (M/C, very manageable), group projects can be fun, but I got the feeling she overused the projects so she wouldn't have to teach.
WOW boring teacher, sitting there for 2.5 hrs is unmanagable because she just blabs about something she has no idea about. she dosnt cover everything that she puts on exams and is really pushy on being in class!!
She was a pretty fun teacher, very clear, expected plenty of textbook use, expected attendance but didn't enforce it. Has a sweet short haircut too! LOL
Mary is a phenonemal professor and I HIGHLY recommend her. I took her for Women in US History and left every class feeling empowered and united. This class is life changing. Mary is extremely personable; I looked forward to every class. Offer a second series to this class please!!
As long as you attend class regularly and pay attention to the lectures, you'll be golden. Participate in class discussions and turn in assignments on time to stay on her good side. She was one of my favorite history instructors - Everything was really clear and she made the material interesting.
Show up & read the assigned chapters & you should be golden. She was super easy & friendly & offers some extra credit too.
Mary is a great teacher. She does base her lectures off of the idea that we've read the material but her power-points are clear even if you don't. The tests also really reflect whats been gone over in class which is good if you attend. This class almost makes me want to be a history major.
Difficult to communicate with.
Good Professor. Knows her stuff really well and makes it interesting. You do have to do your work and come to class well prepared as the class time is generally just discussion oriented.
Lectures were helpful, partway through quarter switched to a style of "read everything on webpage and all links and know it all then come to class and we'll have more interactive type stuff." New style nice but was worried- would all info be during homework, less during class time? Btw, 1st test 19 MChoice, 6-7 short answer and 6 essay questions.
I loved Mary as a prof and plan on taking more of her classes. Although her classes sometimes seem a little unfocused, I learned A TON and found it very easy and comfortable to participate in discussions. As long as you put in solid effort and learn the information you should have no problem at all getting along with her and earning a good grade.
Okay professor. She makes the material interesting (I'm not a big fan of history), but the class itself was a lot of work on the students' part. Lots of reading & not as much in-class coverage as I'd prefer. She also squeezed in a bunch of new info before tests.
best teacher ever
Online course: covers a lot of topics. She doesn't use a text book which is economical but resources for lessons can be a bit confusing and difficult to study for exams. Group project is a lot of work, and time consuming. Tips:take a lot of notes you'll need them for exams, Knowledge on politics/& government beforehand is useful.
Poor communication in online class. Group project is very stressful. She doesn't respond to emails. She rarely updates gradebook. Her exams are too detail-oriented and not based on the broader concepts. Very confusing as an online instructor.
Awful teacher. Doesn't use a texbook which helps save mone but the way she teaches she expects you to already have a structured background in the subject. Her project had no deadline and when I asked her when it was due she took forever to respond but finally responded two days after it was due. Never updates her grades!
This class was very unstructured. I had purchased the text book only to be informed we did not need it once the quarter started. She took a very long time to reply to emails and I am still waiting on replies. The grade book is rarely updated. There were numerous errors in the times quizzes closed and the time allotted for them. Take in class.
She's very laid back and understanding. There's a lot of small group discussions and there were a lot of opportunities for extra credit in my class.
Her assignments are sometimes clear and sometimes a mess. She does not respond to messages and is therefore not helpful at all. She is friendly, but clearly does not prioritize her students in this class. This was supposed to be an intro class but she expects a lot of background knowledge so if you are not an avid follower of politics, don't bother
I was really disappointed with the disorganization of this course. I was also very disappointed in the timeliness that assignments were disbursed. This could have been a great class if there were come better organization. She is very nice and I found her helpful at times but some of the feedback was useless.
She wanted her class to be successful and made herself available to help that happen. Her sense of humor made class easy to come too. There was disorganization, however she enjoys teaching and that makes it easier to come to class to. She wants your success.
Totally disorganized and she is obviously winging the syllabus. We have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and receive the bulk of our reading assignments (2+ chapters) on Tuesdays. Also, she'll randomly assign papers or presentations on a Tuesday and it will be due Thursday. Lectures are scattered and discussion based, no clear direction or plan.
Class was relatively easy, though for an online course it was a large workload. Group project was extremely disorganized. Never been in an online class that had a group project, but it is very poorly designed. The formatting on the quizzes are pretty bad too. My grade went down because she forgot to check my short answer questions.
Unorganized in every way possible. Never know when you actually have to do an assignment because she rarely collecttalks about them. Haven't done a single thing on syllabus. The readings are outdated and very boring. This subject should be an easy interesting one, yet she makes it confusing. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS SHE TEACHES. Horrible teacher.
Haberman is a very supportive teacher and is very good at putting people at ease. This was my very first college class and it was a great way to start! The assignments are very writing focused. Her tests are easy if you study the material. Haberman offers numerous opportunities to receive extra credit. I would recommend this class very highly.
Great Professor, Great Class
Took a night class (American Gov) from her. She was always in a good mood, cracked jokes, and passionate about her subject. Lots of extra cred opportunities. If you do the assignments you should have no problem getting an A. She is also very caring and down to earth, easy to talk to. Cool prof!
Mary is super cool. All you have to do is show up to each class and do the readings. She gives lots of opportunities to make work and there are no penalties for late work. Just do the readings and its the easiest A you will earn.
She was slightly unorganized and the text she assigns is very dry and hard to read. She does grade attendance, so just show up and do the assignments and you'll get a good grade. She's a really nice person and an easy grader, I'd recommend taking the class.
She does not reply to emails. I would not recommend taking an online class with her. Her instructions are not specific enough and she likes to do worthless assignments.
The work wasn't bad but she would enter assignment the week they were due. Last week of the semester she added a test without any warning. Her tests are impossible to pass, had to look up almost every question, the work she assigned never helped at all. Also the tests were timed, typically about 40- 50 questions in 80 minutes & only one try.
I personally don't like history so I could be biased but the class was okay. Not crazy hard but not super easy. I found it sort of boring and that she's sort of a hard grader. But I mean it's not a hard class, I got an A.
Grades ruthlessly, especially if you've communicated that you intend on dropping her class. Really seems to go out of her way to give a 0 on assignments, even giving a 0 early if she assumes you're not going to turn it in anyway. Uses an outdated textbook and is misleading as an 'entry-level' class, requires being politically obsessed.
As a person, Mary truly is down-to-earth. The class I had with her was a women in US history so the people in that class, truly wanted to be there. There was quite a bit of reading, but she makes an effort to have the classes focus on discussions, rather than lectures. It is easy to fall behind, but she is easy to talk to & get help.
Her tests are impossible to pass, most of her online discussions are worthless, and she's got poor organization even in canvas. Literally you responsible for finding out what you're supposed to read that week. I've had History teachers who make the class fun and interesting, and Mary is not one of them. Have fun with her online group projects too!
Toughest class I have ever taken. Mostly because it was online, but she didn't care about her students at all. She pushed so much homework on us without checking in to see how far we were. Never taking a class with her again.
It is hard to meet her, she has no office hour, so you need to make appointment which is quite inconvenient. There are some extra credits. You need to put effort in this class if you want to get A
She's very nice to students and makes jokes during lectures sometimes. I have her class in the summer, and she planned a day trip to Mt. Baker to learn more about the CCC in the New Deal, which is awsome. She mentioned about recent problems in the country too. However, she took long time to grade and answering message through Canvas was slow too.
Read the assignment description carefully, it is easy to drop point from not doing them completely. She is hard to access outside of class due to late reply on email. Fair grade
I felt confident about most of the topics on tests, and Mary really supported us and gave us leeway when we needed it.
Mary makes things easy for her students. the work load she gave us was easy and she would joke and have fun in class while still covering the material for the day.
She interacted with us as much as she can. I loved her attitude and her teaching style
I'm not sure if her in-person classes are different, but this class was incredibly demanding compared to every other class I've taken at Whatcom. There are a usually 3 extensive discussion posts/threads a week, and a ton of material in the two weeks between quizzes. Would not recommend this class to someone who works full time.
Mary is a very kind soft spoken person and is very knowledgeable and i enjoy talking to her outside of class. I just don't think she is very good at structuring her class or criteria and that is something i really value in a professor.
I absolutely loved her. My class was filled with people who tended to slack off and not pay attention, as long as you do the work and ask the occasional question you will do awesome in this class. She's pretty sarcastic which was kind of nice to be around. She was very lenient with due dates (because 9/10 people wouldn't do the work). 10/10
Homework is easy, as long as you show up easy A. Attendance is a big part of grade.
Even though this class is marked as American Government, it is more like a history and current events class. Most of the projects and homework I did were about current events or history. She was very willing to help when I asked for it, and always tried to make class fun.
Easiest A you will ever get. Have to write two essays but they're based on content not your ability to write, and she doesn't like long stuff. She assigns a lot but I hardly read any of it and I aced all of the discussions. Easy grader, would recommend if you're taking a lot of hard classes and need a break
Mary was a sweetheart. There is a lot of reading but, to be honest, I didn't read or watch all of the videos and ended with a high A. She is clear about what she wants and is super nice! Just watch out if she wants 2 or 3 replies to your classmates on certain discussions. Overall solid class and I would recommend her.
I'm going to be straight out honest, I struggled in this class. I'm usually an A/B student, but I have Inattentive ADHD and I struggle with lots of reading. There was WAY too much reading, and not enough time given. The discussions were often interesting though and she gives thorough study guides for tests.
Mary was so great! She was understanding and responsive. This was a fully online class, but even so she was super involved. Show you are passionate about the topic and ready to work, and you will get a good grade. Discussions are really important to prepare for and engage in, and don't slack off on the notes, they really help with quizzes!
Mary gives you a clear idea of what is expected. She does her best to bring fun into the classroom (rewards with pizza parties) and goes above and beyond. Graded on unit tests and papers. Attendance matters
Did online class due to Covid-19. There was lots of interesting discussions and some small assignments here and there. There was 4 quiz's in total and if you read the chapter and follow the given study guide you do just fine. Very willing to help. There was an optional zoom meeting once a week that I didn't go to often,
She is super open to all views and grades very fairly and pushes everyone but in a good way
Very easy history class if you just participate in the discussions and do the work. She has many opportunities for extra credit. Make sure to write notes for the quizzes. If you are struggling don't hesitate to reach out she helped me when I was struggling and she cares about her students.
Great teacher. The workload was fine and wasn't an overload. There are a lot of discussions. You will need the textbook and there are only a few easy quizzes. There is one essay, but it's easy and straightforward. She was accessible outside of class and helped whenever she was able.
The coursework is easy and I have taken other classes that I liked but this class felt uncomfortable when learning about the indigenous community the teacher allows the students to refer to the indigenous as "Indians" and "The Indians" which is not appropriate I've said something before and she didn't do anything won't be taking another class
Haberman made it very clear what the expectations for the class were and was pretty lenient with grading overall. Great teacher, looking forward to taking another class with her.
Mary is a great professor. She really cares about her students. There are lots of opportunities for learning the material but that also means that it is heavy in studying. I really liked how she taught this class and highly recommend taking her course.
Loved this class! Mary knew her subject and was also able to relate it to current events. She made class interesting and students wanted to engage. Easy workload, Quizzes every other week, several discussion boards, weekly note taking for class. Make sure to prepare for each class, lots of good discussions.
This course was by far the easiest college class I have ever taken, while still learning a lot. Most of the time you just read a few parts of the textbook, then do a couple discussions for the week, with 4 quizzes throughout the quarter, no final. She cares deeply for her students and it shows. Just don't expect a lot of variety in assignments.
Mary was a great professor. Each week there is 1-2 discussions, maybe an additional assignment, and a guided note sheet. There is quite a bit of reading, but if you manage your time well you'll be fine. 4 tests total including the final. She is responsive to any questions you have and allows extensions. Lots of easy extra credit opportunities too!
Mostly in class work. Very managable amount of work.
One of the nicest teachers Ive ever had, made coffee and stuff every morning for us and was super lenient with everything. Felt like she was building relationships that actually mattered with all of us students and even invited us on a hike with her hiking class after sending a message to the wrong group. Overall one of my favorite teachers Ive had
Great professor! Took the online History 148. Each week consists of a discussion or two, a guided note sheet, and sometimes a quiz. There is no midterm, only a final. Quizzes are multiple-choice, as was the final. Gives great feedback and loves to answer questions. Provides videos explaining topics along with the textbook.
Mary the best professor I've had here so far. Helpful, caring, even has pizza parties! Not always super clear about what she wants from you with assignments, but super lenient if you do screw up or turn things in late. She doesn't spring quizzes or assignments on you and mostly promotes group work/talk. Very good professor, would take again!
she was super sweet & class was alright, could definitely be way worse could also be better! mary is very personable though and if you have a problem with anything you can discuss it with her. if you just need to take the class for credit but still want a good grade (like me) she was perfect for that
I had Prof Haberman in the mornings and she was so kind! She had coffee and snacks for us. Super easy grader and allows late work. The assignments weren't too difficult if you pay attention in classes and takes some notes you will get a good grade. Just participate. Her outline and assignments sometimes were confusing.
Mary Haberman is amazing! She is a fantastic lecturer. She allows for time to complete assignments (even when you don't measure up), she provides flexibility in presentations, she's smart, and she knows her material. She wants you to succeed, but you have to do the work. She's a wonderful professor, and it's an honor to take a course from her.
She was an okay professor and an overall nice person. I felt as though there was a lot of rambling and not so much getting to the point.
Mary was a Great professor and for an 8 in the morning class she made the best out of it and made it enjoyable.
I'm 99% sure she wrote a lot of these reviews herself because every person I know that has taken her class did not have a pleasant experience, she's just super old style. She's also a bit unorganized and plain rude at times, she treats her student's like middle school students, but expects us to get work done like college students...
I liked Mary's class but it wasn't incredibly engaging. Her lectures were a bit dull but some of the assignments were more interesting. She was a little unorganized at times which made it difficult to know what was expected at times. However, she is very kind and happy to help and answer questions so this wasn't a big problem for me.
Mary was a great professor. She was easily accessible outside of class and graded fairly. Most assignments were written in class, not typed. Make sure to pay attention in class and read the textbook, or you won't pass. We had several handwritten essays, I assume to discourage AI use. But that became annoying after the second or third one.
Prof Haberman is incredibly kind and helpful. The workload is manageable with weekly discussions and quizzes. Using Unstuck study alongside the textbook really helps with prep and understanding the material.
Mary was a super nice person and understanding. I enjoyed the class and what was taught. one downside would be the yapping, I am unsure if this was a one-time thing or it's common for this class, but 99 percent of the class was running start, they never shut up about their thoughts on issues that had nothing to do with our topics.
