She is pretty easy...just a little monotone. Gives fair tests and plenty of opportunity for bonus. Highly recomended.
She should be one of the highest paid teachers here. If you don't make at least a B under her then it's your own fault. Tests are very straightforward, plenty of bonus opportunities. Take her if at all possible.
Great teacher. A must have for any structural related course. Test are pretty easy and they are represenative of the homework. But as far as homework is concerned, the grades are never consistant. It all depends on which TA grade's your homework.
Excellent teacher! Explains material very well and works plenty of examples. She gives a lot of lengthy home work, but it helps a lot! Tests are of moderate difficulty and fair representation of home work problems. Only negatives is that it's very hard to keep up with her while writing notes in class, and she doesn't curve a whole lot, if any.
Teacher is very helpful just go talk to her if you have any problems. Homework is lengthy but well worth the time. If you do and understand the homework you will be okay in the class. That doesn't mean you're going to get an A. You have to be willing to put in the time to study and do homework.
Go to class every time, if few people show up she'll give bonus for attendance. Tests are hard, with little to no curve (usually none). Homework takes forever, but helps in class/on tests. Do the work, and you'll learn the material. Lab is optional and not worth it for me.
Excellent!
Great teacher! She is very helpful and gives great explainations on fairly difficult material. LOTS of homework though and it seems to depend on who grades as to what grade you get. If you do the work and go to class you will do well though. I would take her for any class.
Dr. Hughes was a wonderful professor. I had her for ENGR2050,ENGR2070 and CIVL3010. She explains the material very well. Gives alot of homework. Very helpful and understanding. My favorite at Auburn!
Dr. Hughes is the best teacher I've had, I would take every single class with her if I could. She is very helpful and teaches in a practical way in which you don't go over theory and proof
She was AWESOME. Statics is definitely NOT an easy class. I've tried it once before and failed miserably. If you go to class you WILL be able to do the homework and you WILL pass. She is very helpful..she had study sessions and would even stay and help us until 9:30pm the night before the test. Never had a better professor!
Everyone pretty much nailed it. She gives alot of homework and grad students grade it. She does not throw curves on test. She is a straight shooter. I would take her for every class if I could!
The best professor you can take for Mechanics. Te tests do get relatively harder as the year progresses, but she still doesn't throw curves. Just if she says "it will be easy," it means "it won't be easy, but do-able." Probably a good Statics professor as well, possibly as good as Gross. Enjoyable class, great professor.
Dr. Hughes is GREAT. I took her summer Statics course and now have her for Mech Matl's. She gives ALOT of hw but it's really the only way to get the material down and do well on tests...I recommend doing as many problems as possible from the book. She doesn't make it harder than it has to be and is extremely helpful in and out of class.
Dr. Hughes is awesome! She is very good at explaining the material in class and is very helpful during office hours too. I haven't had her class for 3 semesters but she is still more than willing to help me with my classes. She is just a great person!
Mech Mat'l isnt any worse than Statics really. Her class runs the same too...quite a bit of hw and moderately difficult tests. Since its a 50 min class I suggest working ALOT of hw probs. You need to pretty much be a machine to fiish and do well on her tests. She is really helpful in and out of class and wants to see all her students succeed.
Dr Hughes is a really great professor. She really wants her students to do well in her class. She works a lot of problems in class that are similar to test problems. 3 tests, homework, and a final make up your grade. She's also really helpful when you have questions. I'm looking forward to taking her for CE Analysis next semester.
Dr. Hughes is amazing! She tries to do her best to make sure everyone understands concepts and give homework problems pretty close to the tests. she practically hands you an A if you do your homework and understand it by the time the test comes
One of AU's best teachers. She loves to teach and loves engineering. Extremely helpful in and out of class, and is in touch with reality. She'll mention football/bball during class and always has study sessions to help before the tests. A fair amount of work, but she wants you to succeed and wants you to earn your grade. Rewards those that try.
Lots of homework but getting it done helps to understand the material. Very helpful, even held extra review sessions before the test and the final. Tests are sometimes difficult, but very manageable.
you must do the assigned homework and work a lot of extra problems in preparation for the tests. i thought the tests were hard but dr. hughes is one of the best teachers i have ever had! she is always available for office hours and hold study sessions before each test. i wouldn't take anyone else!!
Dr. Hughes is a great teacher that seems to really enjoy teaching. The material requires a lot of practice outside of class. The tests are average in terms of difficulty. Lots of partial credit. Dr. Hughes is very helpful with any questions about the material. Highly Recommend.
Dr. Hughes is by far the best professor at Auburn. Extremely helpful and does everything she can to make sure her students understand the material. Tests are challenging but if you work and understand the homework you will be fine. Also gives great partial credit.
Gives a bunch of hwk that is not very helpful on tests. Material is very hard. Very good helping during office hours. Good teacher but lessons and hwk are not always relevant to test questions
Hughes is the best teacher that I have had while at Auburn. She may have some cheesy stories or jokes but she is an amazing teacher. I would definitely recommend her and take her for as many classes as I can. She gives a lot of HW but it helps you to understand the course material. She also gives examples during class and takes partial credit.
Great teacher! Highly recommended for any class she teaches.
Great teacher! She is really nice and tries to be funny. Her exams are 3 questions with one (2pt) silly bonus question. Her exams are straight forward. The problems normally come from the homework which is graded. You normally get homework 2 nights out of the week but it is only 4 or 5 problems which are exactly like the ones she does in class. <3
Dr. Hughes made this class my favorite all semester. She really engaged the class. I liked her so much that I made my whole next semster to get her again. She does assign a lot of hmwk but it is great preparation for her tests. She also tells the class beforehand exactly what problem types will be on the tests and final. I'd give her an A+!
Hughes is a good teacher. She gives hw each week for a grade. It is very time consuming, but not that difficult. The tests arent easy at all but partial credit is given on everything. You should workfast on tests if yu ly have 50 min class. Recesitation is for bonus points. Random bonus attendance points given also, so go to class. 4 total tests.
Dr. Hughes was a good teacher but her tests have been made significantly harder than the old tests from earlier ratings. I would recommend another teacher to take due to the difficulty of the tests she gives and not to mention she DOES NOT SCALE under any circumstance.
Dr. Hughes is a GREAT professor. You can tell that she was born for teaching. She is beyond helpful and will sit with you to solve problems together if you don't understand. Her tests are difficult for half of the class, and the other half just A's them. It depends on the type of person you are... I guess. But she is a great professor.
Hard but good. Skilled at teaching and has a pleasant personality. Her tests and hw are difficult but not impossible. Would recommend.
She is really helpful. Her homework and tests are pretty ridiculous. She gives a lot of partial credit though. and is willing to help you a lot in her office hours. You will learn the material in her class
Very awkward in her office hours. Be sure to know more then just the 3 hours worth of homework every week. She is nice but may tend to baby her students too much. One of the best teachers at Auburn, But very strict on grading.
The homeworks are made to teach you the material. Most of the problems can be found online with a simple google search if you're stuck. You will need to have a thorough understanding of the material to do well on tests. With that said, there isn't much material in Mech. of Mat., so understanding the material fully is not a very difficult task.
Dr. Hughes is a nice lady. Her assignments are straigtforward and simple. Show up to class at least half the time. Some days you get bonus points for being there. I think everyone made an A in the class. Very laid-back class.
Amazing at giving clear lectures, but do NOT miss class. Seriously, don't. Big thing I learned this semester that could have been avoided was to take the homework very seriously. The assignments should not be placed at the bottom of the pile. On a positive note, she offers study sessions before all of the exams that she attends.
She teaches very well and answers questions in class and out of class. She is also easy to approach if you need help. The tests are hard due to the time limit and the amount of work needed for the test answer. If the class is longer than 50 mins, she does lecture for 15 mins before the test on a test day.
A little bit of work, but if you try, you'll get a good grade.
Not an awful teacher but I did not enjoy this class. She was pretty clear in teaching, but the tests are completely dissimilar to homework and class problems. I would'nt take her again if I can help it
Very nice. Very specific.
Dr. Hughes is an awesome lady and an awesome teacher. Go to class, do the homework the way she wants you to do it, and you'll be fine. She's super sweet and knows her stuff, and you can tell she really cares about her students.
Dr Hughes is a great professor. You can tell she wants you to be successful and learn. She is also one of the most available professors as far as office hours go. The class is very straight forward, the test questions are just like homework. The grading is absolute, no curving. An A definitely possible.
After taking her for Statics ENGR 2050, I had to have her again for Mechanics of Materials. Hughes remains the best professor I have had at Auburn University. No one has embodied the Auburn Spirit as Hughes has. This class is like Advanced Statics: you have to think more critically and the tests are much tougher, but very doable and graded fairly.
After taking her for ENGR 2050, I HAD to have her again for Mechanics of Materials. Hughes is the best professor I have had at Auburn University. Nobody teaches as clear and cares for her students like she does. She's by far the best test grader at the college- she will give you the most credit possible and tries to understand your thinking.
At first, the homework seemed like a lot to do, but it helped me get all A's on the tests. Hughes is the best professor I have had at Auburn University. Nobody teaches as clear and cares for her students like she does. She's by far the best test grader at the college- she will give you the most credit possible and tries to understand your thinking.
Dr. Highes teaches you a very difficult class but gives you every chance to succeedz
Continues to be the best professor I've had at Auburn. Fantastic at teaching. Very generous grader. She's so flexible and willing to help outside of class. She really sets you up to succeed.
Dr. Hughes is a solid teacher, although lectures can be a bit boring sometimes. However, she explains the material well and is very helpful. Usually there's a homework assignment each week but it's not too bad.
Dr. Hughes is great, she teaches a tough course, but she tries to make it as enjoyable as possible. I truly enjoyed her constant real life examples. Her lectures consist of practice problems which is the most effective way to teach. If you don't come to class, you won't get the notes, and therefore won't be able to do the homework (1/week ish).
Dr. Hughes is a great lady and an amazing professor. She is always willing to help you out if you need help with the homework. She is also pretty understanding with grades and she tells you the style of problems you will see on the final. She also does a review session beforehand.
Dr. Hughes doesnt just teach the material- she wants you to genuinely learn it, love it, and enjoy it. She is one of the most encouraging, fair, and inspiring individuals. Go to each class (as you will be confused without class). Gives weekly homework that do help reinforce content. Go to office hours to be successful! Makes the content great
Ms. Hughes was constantly switching on and off topic, which was very distracting. She randomly grades a couple of problems out of the entire homework, which hurt most people. She's disorganized and confusing. Grades come in very late, so you never know how you're doing in the class. Do not recommend. Avoid at all costs.
This class is super manageable if you come to class every day and take notes. Definitely buy the notes packet!
Dr. Hughes was an incredible professor! She did just as well teaching in person as she did online (though Mastering Eng. is meh). She's enthusiastic, able to clearly explain the material, and provides everything you need to succeed. The course's content and structure is clear. She's probably the best prof I've had so far, take her class if you can!
Great professor. Tests are very hard and will have to work and study hard for a good grade in the class. Gives both written and mastering engineering homework. Take good lecture notes and follow along. Keep up with the class.
Worst professor I've had in a while. She gave weekly quizzes with no partial credit, meaning if you mess up at all, you will bomb them. Also, those quizzes are worth 10% of your grade, so good luck. She didn't give partial credit on the tests either. If you have a choice, avoid Dr. Hughes at all cost.
She skips important steps when working examples because she thinks we already know it and for time constraints. I would learn more in one test review session because she would explain every step rather than skipping around like in class. It takes her forever to get grades back for some reason. Class isn't too hard just have to work a little.
Took her because my friend took her a couple years ago and said she was good. Her quizzes were hell she came up with 3 or 4 multiple choice but it was all of nothing and they are worth 10% of your grade and only gave you about 15 minutes to finish which was barely enough time. Also the very hard Test grader if you fail a test you fail the class.
Great professor, she really cares for her students. Wants everyone to leave her classroom with a better understanding of Statics. If you need help she is always readily available.
Dr. Hughes was great professor over all. Very helpful and accessible outside of class. I would definitely take her again if given the option.
I love Dr. Hughes. I wish I could take her for every single one of my engineering classes. If you have the opportunity to take her class, absolutely do it. She is so helpful inside and outside of the classroom. Her exams are extremely reasonable. There is a decent amount of homework, but if you do it, you won't really need to study.
Dr. Hughes is by far one of the best teachers I've had in college. She's very helpful in class and even more helpful during office hours. If you don't understand something, literally just ask and she'll go above and beyond to help you. Tests were really tough though IMO, so be sure to ask a lot of questions, pay attention, know the homework, etc.
Dr. Hugh is the most frustrating teacher I've ever had. She has assignments go through 3 levels of "cheat-protection" to the point that it adds multiple layers of time-consuming work to the homework she assigns. She assigns lots of work such as "Attend a career fair and talk to 5 people" or "write a 650+ word paper about a meeting you attended"
Everyone is right about Dr. Hughes. Great teacher, fair grader, good person. You'll be lucky to get a seat in any of her classes.
Wish I could have Dr. Hughes for all of my engineering classes. You need to go to class and do the homework in order to pass, but she is more than willing to help you as long as you ask for help. She has review sessions before each exam and they cover everything that will be on there.
Love Dr. Hughes so much! She's one of the best professors I've had here at Auburn. She cares about her students and really wants you to succeed. Go to her office hours for homework help and her review sessions to know what is going to be on the exams.
Dr Hughes is overall a great professor. Had her for statics and made an easy A, but mechanics of materials is a much harder class. Her tests are a little much, and can be quite difficult. A good amount of homework and lectures are mandatory. She is very knowledgeable, but tries to force material sometimes due to time constraints.
Dr. Hughes for Statics was awesome. Super straightforward, to the point, HW followed very well with lecture material. Definitely go to class, I never had an issue even at 8 am. The tests were very easy, 4 questions and you could certainly expect what each one would be. Probably the easiest A I ever earned.
Dr. Hughes is a phenomenal lecturer and is very clear with the way she presents new ideas and concepts. Her office hours are very laid back and she makes sure you leave with an understanding of the material you were having trouble with. She is super approachable and keeps the class light and fun, and wants to make a connection with her students!
Dr. Hughes is a very approachable teacher, which is very helpful for this class. If you don't understand something, asking sooner rather than later is best. She's very knowledgeable and does her best to explain any possible confusion about problems and concepts. For quizzes and tests, she gives you as many points as she can through partial credit.
Dr. Hughes is the best professor I've ever had at Auburn. I'm taking her again next semester. You definitely have to put in the work to do well but she is really good at explaining and really wants her students to succeed. She also makes an effort to get to know her students, if you talk to her, which I really appreciate.
Dr. Hughes is amazing as a professor. For this class we were able to purchase a binder of the entire semester's notes which helped so much. She is very approachable and cares a lot about her students. My only complaint would be that she is (by her own admission) a slow grader, but she is very thorough and gives tons of partial credit.
Good amount of homework but worth doing because you dont want to get behind. The material is never too difficult unless you do get behind. Often times class was rushed yet at times it felt very slow. My biggest complaint were her horribly self drawn probs that were hard to tell what exactly was going on. However shes a fair and understanding grader
Dr. Hughes is a fantastic professor. Buy her printed notes--it makes following lecture so much easier. She is always willing to help/answer questions, holds review sessions before exams, and drops your lowest quiz/homework grade. Enjoyed every second of her class; could not recommend her enough.
Dr. Hughes is great! Make sure to come to the class because attendance is taken and the lectures are the only way you will learn the material. The written homeworks take a very long time, but if you actually do them you will be plenty prepared for the exams. Also, Dr. Hughes is great outside the class room with answering questions.
Fantastic professor. Moves through material slowly, but you will have a solid grasp of the material covered. Slow grader, but that's so you get plenty of partial credit. Very accessible and flexible. Cares about all her students. It's very hard to pass up a class taught by Dr. Hughes.
Good luck
She gives good feedback on exams, but wow, I'm not sure if a 100% is even possible. Pay close attention to sig figs, sign conventions, lb vs kg, etc. She gives partial credit, but picks apart your exams. She's very sweet however and is always willing to help in any way possible. Just expect to study 30 percent more compared to other professors.
Hughes is an awesome professor for statics. She made it very enjoyable and it was never too difficult. She is a little strict about significant figures and units, but that makes you better accustomed to paying attention to the small details which helps out a lot in the long run. Buy the notes or use an iPad if you can!
Dr. Hughes is a great lecturer and honestly a right of passage for anyone going into civil. She is very accessible in office hours and I HIGHLY recommend going for any questions you have as she is great one on one. Her office hours make this class doable, as the homework can be difficult and her tests are hard, but don't let this discourage you!
Great professor! I'd buy her notes if you can; makes following along easy and is great to reference back to later. Tests 1 and 2 for Statics were very easy but 3 and Final were pretty tough. Definitely show up to every class or you will fall behind quickly.
There was extra credit but it was meant to be replacement for something that should have been a curve on the tests and was rarely actually given. I only took her because she was good for statics but the homework given were graded harder than as someone would do a test no one was ever given a 100 on them. Also unclear grading was a requirement.
One of the nicest teachers you will get. She has amazing lectures that demonstrate what you are learning. Also amazing office hours. She will sit with you any time until you understand the subject. Her TA grades pretty hard and tests can sometimes throw you for a loop, but she is there always to help you study.
She really wants her students to succeed and is very understanding. She gives great outline on how to do statics problems. Quizzes and homework prepare you VERY WELL for exam (I never studied bc they helped so much). She posts lecture videos after class. Also posts notes (don't really need textbook).
Dr. Hughes was a great statics professor. I never interacted with her much, but she was always very kind and reasonable when I approached her. While the class did require a decent amount of homework and studying, I enjoyed learning statics. I'd love to take her again in the future.
She is the flagship teacher for civil. Very good at everything
If you are in engineering at Auburn and you have the opportunity to take any class she teaches, take it! Best education you will receive. Be prepared to work, but by the end of the semester you will feel accomplished.
Horrible. Do not take her. She grades exams so hard not even sure what I got points off for. Shes a nice person but when it come to actual teaching I would not take her.
I have had classes with her before and it was fine however I do not believe she was equip to come out of retirement to teach this class. I believe that the tests did not match the difficulty of class homework, or the text book. It's also inappropriate for half of the class to fail the final and the third test with no curve.
