I have had Ms. Hyatt for two quarters now and she really gets you excited about the subject matter. Great teacher.
I took her Humanities 141 Film Communication class online. She was a very cool teacher, had everything organized. Although she did expect alot from you. She would want you to respond to at least 2 other people by a certain day, and she would expect you
I loved Film class. Hyatt has you doing papers every week, but if you do your research and watch the films you're guarenteed an A if you have basic knowledge of how to construct an essay.

Just get to class. She makes you write four papers on famous directors. She also gives a lot of extra credit.
Mary is very nice and it is a fun class. She sets up a really comfortable environment to give your speeches in. The class becomes like a family. Just make sure you don't miss class very much =)
Really great teacher, brings her dog to class. Very easy going, no tests or quizs. The final was just to watch a movie. I would take her class again.
Great teacher!! All you have to do is sit and watch films all day then descuss them online. If you don't have an open mind then you might find the films boring. But a very easy class!! Take it!
So fun. so cute. brings sofee (her cute pup) to class. The films are interesting. go to class to get on her good side and to understand the films completely = A++ i enjoyed this class a lot. I would take it again quickly! She likes when u are quiet during the movies, show up on time, be respectful and you'll have a great fun quarter.
I took CMST 101 and HUM 224 with Marry. She is an outstanding teacher, she love to teach. Just show up to class, be respectful and your in pretty good hand.
Very easy class, very interesting she is very nice. I was a little sad when she told the whole class that she tried to help her sister kill herself though it's called Euthinasia
She is an awesome teacher! I took her intro to film and global film and they were really fun classes. If you have any interest in film, take her classes!
I took both Intro to and Global film with Mary Hyatt, and adore her. She is a wonderful teacher, who encourages students and loves her job. Two thumbs up!
Wonderful teacher, easy course. The main thing is to stay on schedule and turn in your homework on time. Would definitely recommend this class to others.
Great instructor
Global Film, pretty decent class. Its fun watching movies at school every day. In class discussions and online forums. The final is to make a storyboard, just tailor it to the objectives in the syllabus and use the terminology you learn first week. Easy A. I actually watched a few international films on my own after this class and enjoyed them.
nice, helpful, and delightful
Mary is awsome her class is fun and you learn so many interesting things
Wonderful selection of films shown in class. Occasionally her instructions will conflict with what she is actually looking for in an assignment. She is humorous and is passionate about the subject and teaching in general. I really enjoyed her class overall.
Mary can teach you as much about life as she can about film. She is very helpful, and does everything to help a student succeed.
Global Films was awesome. She is a great teacher. I highly reccomend her and her classes.
good teacher, good class. fair grading. interesting questions for each movie. I learned a lot from answering those. Highly recommended.
Fun class. Online class was stricter and more challenging than most online classes, however it was very rewarding as well. I loved dissecting the films within the guidelines of her prompts for the weekly assignments and I enjoyed the discussion groups a great deal as well. Highly recommended.
Awesome class. A lot of the films require research in order to truly understand the message, and it gives an individual a broader view. Attendance is mandatory but at least you have great parking in the morning. She is an excellent instructor and helps you out in every way possible. Oh and she has an awesome dog named Sophie that hangs out
She is very old which can be frustrating, but she is always helpful and her classes are pretty easy seeing that they are basic film classes.
pretty easy class, just show up and watch movies. you only get homework 1-2 night a week. *MAKE SURE YOU GET TO CLASS 5 MINUTES EARLY!!!* sometimes she'll take addendance a bit before class starts and it is a big part of your grade. She's really willing to work with you if you fall behind but if you just show up to class and do hw, you'll be fine.
Mary is a great professor IF you take her on campus. She picks favorites and is not clear about subject material when it comes to online classes. I once picked a film from a list she provided to write an essay about and she gave me a C because the film didn't "count". She has a very loving personality, however.
Easy A if you follow the directions and put some effort into the discussion posts, which are 250 words each: 4 responses to the discussion posts, and 2 responses to classmates. There's a movie each week but 7 out of 9 films shown were depressing, so that was the only downside of the class. She gives good feedback, too.
Absolutely a wonderful teacher! Made this online class great and was available more than any professor I have ever had. I took this class for a “W” requirement and don’t regret it for a second. Do your homework, turn stuff in on time and you will do well!
Mary is a wonderful teacher. She gives great feedback and tells you what you need to improve on. The online class was great. I was able to work and still got a top grade in the course. All it takes is doing the work. She is organized and your assignments are due on set days so it's easy to keep track and prioritize. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
BEST class and instructor ever! Mary is a wonderful & knowledgeable film instructor. I love the passion she has for the industry. This is an easy A class if you show up on time and take really good notes. I almost always got extra credit on my papers too. This is a very fun class and I recommend it to everyone!
This is such an awesome class! I highly recommend it. Professor Hyatt is one of the best teachers I have had. This is a semi-time consuming online class. 7-10 posts plus one report on a full length movie per week. As long as you put forth the effort, you will do well. Take this class! You wont regret it.
Great class, depressing movies - but good, great professor
AMAZING. PERIOD. TAKE HER, show up to class, easy A. Also, participate and have thoughtful answers. You can even B.S. it.
I loved Mary! Very easy! She would give me extra points on every assignment just for doing so well. I passed with 104% without even doing extra credit, just doing good on assignments that were already mandatory. The movies are the worst. Act that you like them. Give insightful answers. turn it in on time. pay attention to feedback throughout week.
Mary's pretty lax with her grading, and if you're late with an assignment, she's pretty understanding.
I loved Mary! She is really helpful, this class is so easy she gives you free days to miss class. She really expects participation & do NOT be late, she doesn't like that at all. We did a lot of group work which made the class super easy. All we did was watch movies. I think we took two tests all quarter & we got to use our notes and phones. Easy A
Just watched movies and wrote about them. It was writing intensive, but it wasn't hard. Six posts required per week and each post is about 350 words. Interesting posts took fifteen minutes to write, while boring ones took around thirty minutes. Once you get the hang of writing posts, the class is a breeze.
*my orig. Post had wrong course code* we just watched movies and wrote about them. It was writing intensive, but it wasn't hard. Six posts required per week and each post is about 350 words. Interesting posts took fifteen minutes to write, while boring ones took around thirty minutes. Once you get the hang of writing posts, the class is a breeze
Mary is very outgoing and very easy grader.
I took her online, not expecting much, but I ended up loving this class! You really learn a lot from films and it's honestly really interesting. Every week we have a new theme on what film to watch, but she's a great teacher and gives good feedback. EASY A.
To get a 4.0 in Mary Hyatt's Global Film class, watch the required films and turn in your six posts, consisting of two 350 word paragraphs, on time. That's it. Be specific, use examples, use your writer's voice, reference film terminology, paraphrase when responding to your classmates' posts, and provide good insight into the film's content.
Really good at being on top of grading, gives constructive feedback. As long as you put even the slightest bit of effort into the class, you should pass just fine. Personally one of my favorite teachers I've had the falls and one the most perfect classes to take online.
I took Mary online and loved it! There is always one discussion board due every Friday and the rest are due Sunday. 6 posts total every week. This is a big part of your grade. One paper due every week on the type of film studied that week. If you put in effort, you will get an A. Mary responds quickly and always comments on the work you complete.
Best Teacher EVER!
The best!! so much extra credit you could get 150% in the class with minimal effort!!!
Mary is great! She is a sweet lady who truly cares for her students. It's a writing intensive class, but you write 2 paragraphs every week; both about 350 words. Super easy and enjoyable class! I would definitely take her class again in a heartbeat!
Mary was great! This was an online summer course but she was always available through email. The films were all good to watch but there is a lot of reading and writing involved. This counts towards writing intensive and diversity credits. Plenty of time for weekly assignments. Overall easy A if you do the work.
Loved this class and the professor!!
This class is not for people that dont have free time. I thought it would take less time, but I ended up taking hours on my posts, as well as watching the films. This was a fun class, it met the writing intensive and diversity requirements. The films are all subtitled but enjoyable and Mary is quick to respond and always gives feedback. Got 100%!
I loved this class! Mary is an amazing instructor and I would definitely recommend taking her class if you get the chance. You are required to watch 1 film a week, and write 6 posts with 350 words per post. If you give yourself enough time, a 4.0 is no problem. Overall I spent about 9-11 hours a week on this class. Great class!
I took this class because it was writing intensive and diversity, but what I got out of this class was so much more than I ever expected 'walking in.' Professor Mary is one of the best Profs I've come across and I would take a class by her anyway and pay extra. I implore you, take her class!
I took this class online and we had to do so much reading and writing. You have to write ABUNCH! Discussions are required or your not gonna pass. Some stuff is confusing and hard to understand. Plus, if you are not good at writing your gonna get a bad grade. To her its more of your writing style and punctuation.
Mary is amazing. It is easy to get a 4.0 in her class if you show up and do the work. She provides tons of extra credit and she is super kind and sweet. On top of that, she brings her adorable dog to class everyday. I would highly recommend taking this class.
Mary was a vey good professor. Very knowledgeable, gives great feedback on assignments. Class is a fair amount of work but definitely do-able
Mrs. Hyatt is an amazing professor. She is also an English professor so she holds a high standard when it comes to papers, discussions, etc... If you struggle with papers she doesn't just let you fail she actually cares and will help you through your struggles with very helpful comments. She pushes you to work while also making the class exiting.
Mary is such a sweet lady. Every week we watch one film & have to respond to 4 of her prompts that she posts in a discussion board & then respond to 2 of our classmates' responses. Each response must be at least 350 words & very detailed so at times it feels like a lot but she doesn't grade too hard. There is also a EC assignment offered weekly.
Watch 1 film per week, read some short articles, and write 4 discussion posts and 2 replies (350 words each). Writing can take time but it's really not difficult. The films are interesting and some are very recent; I assume she uses different films each quarter. I love this class, she also gave me an extra point for replying to a classmate's reply!
Mary is wonderful! This was my first college class and she was very accessible when I had questions or concerns. She gave great feedback too -- her comments were detailed and full of praise when she noticed something she liked. If you care about your assignments and put in effort, it will be easy to get an A. You can't go wrong with Mary!
Mary is one of the reasons I decided to actually stay in school. She is an inspirational woman and an amazing mentor. At the time of this post, she is 82 years old, and she told us she doesn't want to retire or feel the need to because she just loves to teach. She is a very sweet person, and will guide you in lieu of of just grading you. Mom type.
I LOVE HER TO DEATH. Sweetest teacher. Insanely caring and really strong feedback. Super responsive and cares about giving you an A. You write a lot because it's a W course but god does she make you feel appreciated as a student. I wish I could give her a hug. You can tell she just genuinely loves her students and her job. True angel indeed.
Good class for students already knowledgable about film. I entered this class with no prior film background and struggled a bit in the beginning. Lots of lengthy discussion posts but overall a fun class. Mary gives great feedback.
Wonderful film teacher. Do your homework and you will get a good grade.
this class involves a lot of writing, but the movies are very interesting and you learn a lot. overall i really enjoyed the class and would definitely take again.
Very sweet, gives clear instructions for her course. Do the work and you will pass. She answers emails very quickly and is understanding.
AMAZING. Gives ample feedback, and there is so much opportunity for extra credit. I passed the class with 109%. I will definitely be taking another one of her classes if I end up needing another humanities credit. Bravo Mary!
I absolutely adore Mary and her classes. Shes very understanding and gives stellar feedback, she really knows what shes talking about. Work load is light and content is intriguing. Every class of hers is interesting and shes very sweet, just a really cool lady overall. If you are passionate about film I highly recommend any of her film classes.
Mary is the best professor I have had since being at SFCC. Her class is fully online, and at first I was super stressed about the amount of work I needed to do. But, I then realized I just needed to manage my time wisely, if you do the work you will pass easily. Mary gives great feedback and is a speedy grader. I would 100% take this class again!!
Honestly, Mary is one of the best professors I have had while at SFCC. She responds quickly to questions and concerns. The class itself its too hard as long as you know the criteria necessary, (350 word post min.) and you use your time efficiently. Highly highly recommend Mary as while at Film224
MARY IS SO SWEET AND CARING. Mary make branching out and watching films so fun! I am so happy I took this easy class (For it being writing intensive super easy). Most of the movies were very enjoyable and she included some popular ones. 6 - 350 word posts per week but I got away with 300. Great commentary on work/makes you feel special. Love!!!!!!!
Super simple and straightforward class. I didn't usually mind the movie picks. She's also super sweet and willing to give extensions on assignments as needed. She really really values communication with her so just talk to her.
She is a careful person and wants the best for you. We watched one movie a week and that was it. There were some questions that needed to be answered, but if you struggle on any of them, she will always type a good sized paragraph helping you through the different things that can be fixed the next time.
Hyatt is my favorite Film professor. She gives a lot of extra credit as long as you do the weekly assignments, which are the same every week. She has interesting prompts and the work isn't too hard, plus there are so many awesome films we got to view. Would recommend if you like films and need a more laid-back class.
Mary is a wonderful teacher and I completely enjoyed her class. She is very gracious and gives you time after a due date as long as you ask her first. The class itself was pretty straightforward and was just discussion boards with a few papers.
Mary has a bright soul and a passion for teaching that shows every time she gives feedback. She was very generous and gave bonus points almost every assignment. Film141 is a writing intensive class, so if you dislike writing it might not be a breeze, but Mary is willing to help you with whatever you need. If I could rate 10/10, I would.
Film 224 is an engaging and stress-free class. In total, I spent a total of MAYBE 4 hours on the class a week, including watching the weekly film. And with this, receiving over 100% is very easy, but you still learn a lot. Plus, the films are fun to watch and she gives great feedback on all the discussion boards. Take this class, it's great.
I loved Mary's class. Everyone I talk to who has taken one of her classes loves Mary's classes. The class is purely discussion posts, six a week. She allows late work if you ask ahead of time for an extension and gives a lot of extra credit if you really engage in the conversations. The films had mostly male directors & male leads this term though.
Film 224 is an excellent course! I would recommend to anyone who is unfamiliar w/foreign film &/or needs cultural/diversity credits. Exceeded expectations. I learned alot & enjoyed doing it. I thought the course would be boring, I was pleasantly surprised & it is one of my favorites so far. Mary is a great teacher. I would take her classes again.
Mary's Film 224 class was unique and thought-provoking. Heavy on discussions but they're not as organized as they could be. Her criteria is clear however if you're not specific enough in the ways she prefers your grade will fall quickly if not careful. The films are generally free and accessible& easy to dedicate time to watch them.
can be disheartening when u find out that peers are using ai receiving grades = to or > than those that do the work honestly. Need guidelines about this2 make the class more level films are good professor knows a lot. ps. prove u saw the films with way more examples than u think of @first or she will assume you didn't watch them even tho u did
This class is basically a part 2 to Intro to Film, just has wayyy more writing. You respond to Canvas board and she will degrade you on if your responses are not pretentious enough. Some weeks she will be super invested into the class, writing paragraph long remarks on how your clearly stated sentence wasn't long enough, other weeks she wont care.
Six 200+ word discussion posts a week on an accompanying film, pictures will earn you extra credit. Great films and good feedback, she can be a little passive and/or vague with grading though not more than any other teacher. If you need an extension she will provide with one! Overall I really enjoyed this class, she's one of my fav prof's at SFCC!
I loved Mary! She provided feedback on my discussion posts, often sharing her opinions rather than suggestions for improvement. The course involved watching a movie each week, reading around 6 pages, and posting on a discussion board.Mary required 300-word posts but rarely penalized shorter ones and she often gave extra credit for longer submissions.
I'm so glad I signed up for Mary's class! I watched some fun movies. Mary provided interesting articles to read. She also had eight prompts, for each film, and we would have to write a 300-word response to four of them (include a picture for extra credit). By the end of the week, we would have to reply to two additional posts. Super easy and fun!
