Nice person, not always the most clear, especially with the open book quizzes, because half the answers aren't even in the book or your notes for that matter. Not anything too difficult, just alot of reading, books etc...
THIS CLASS IS BORING! She lectures everyday. Every week you have a difficult open book quiz - which strangely have nothing to do with what she lectures on. She gives a study guide before exams though. You have to write a paper without any of her help. Lotss and lotssssssss of reading. Lots of work...
Good luck with this one. Her lectures are borning and there is alway so much reading. She is not helpful when asking her something, she is pretty rude. I def. would not take her again.
I went to class and took notes. Once a week you have an open book quiz which arent that bad ... multiple choice. Gives you what u need to know for midterm and final which i got an A.. the only bad thing was the paper we had to write over a book we had to read. Hard grader on the paper but thats all. Just your average lecture class
While I am not that into history, I think this professor made me hate it more. She is very boring and monotoned. There is a TON of things to read. 5 books/ stories in all. quizzes every week, exams, and a book report. I definetly think there are better professors to take other than her (aka don't take her!!)
She is clear on what she wants, and the class is easy as long as you study and take notes, nothing you wouldn't expect for a college class.
There are probably better professors out there. Although she gave us a lot of take home quizzes and was always behind in the lecture. The quizzes are straight out of the book and have nothing to do with the lectures. Tests arent too bad except the final exam was pretty rough, a cummulative exam of history is ridiculous.
I def. would not take her as a teacher. She is boring and her lecture notes have nothing to do with the tests or exams. She is quite rude, and very monotone. I wouldn't recommend her at all. You read so many books, which are useless to the midterm.
She is very nice, but her tests are tough, and she is a bit of a tough grader. As long as you attend class and take notes on the lectures, it is not bad at all. She's a very nice person, and is willing to help.
Thisteacher knows her stuff. She is boring for those who do not find history interesting, butoverall she wants to makeu learn &covers a lot in her lectures. Her exams areeasy, she gives u the info u need way ahead of time.u only read 2 books, so get over it.its not bad. &the paper was simple to. cry me a river if you're college and cant write 4pgs
Covers a large amount of material, but she gives you a sheet before the exam stating exactly what will be on it. She offers extra credit and assigned one paper, but it was not extensive. Very good teacher overall.
she wasn't too enthusiastic about history when she lectured. the quizzes were kinda hard even though they were open book. there was two exams and a book review. not a bad class, but i don't think i would take her again.
Personally I would not suggest this class. I had her at 8am and it was so hard to stay awake. The way she has her notes laid out, doesn't catch your attention. She knows a lot about the subject but, she rambles. The open book quizes aren't that bad.most of the time she let us do take home quizs so that was a plus. If you really like history she'd be
If you want an easy history class, take Prof Miles. I had her for her 8:00am class and I will admit, it was hard staying awake sometimes, but quizzes are open book or take home, she only gives one paper and gives you a lot of time to do it, and her tests are incredibly simple because she gives you a layout of exactly what will be on it. I got a 4.0
One of the best professors I have ever had. Sure, her lectures are boring, but they aren't that bad. She is extremely helpful and very nice. The quizzes were take home or open-book and she gave you review sheets which detailed everything that was on both exams. You do write a paper, but it is not extensive. I would highly recommend this professor.
good professor. Buy the book, she gives open book quizzes on the chapters. Really easy. Have to read three books, all open book quizzes. One paper that is really easy and you can submit to her beforehand to read. One exam which was super easy, and the final. You get points for attendance lectures aren't too boring, she is humorous, you watch movies
Show up to class everyday and you'll do great. All quizzes are open book, but can be a bit challenging but not impossible. Gives you all the information you need for final. Great teacher, I would take her again in a heart beat.
Awesome teacher. She is really easy. I HATE History and got a 3.6 without really trying. My advise is to take REALLY GOOD NOTES and there is no reason you wont get an A. She is really nice, and lets you leave early sometimes. Tests are SUPER easy. She Tells you EXACTLY whats on the test!
Loved her. She was nice, and pretty easy, and super patient. She told you EXACTLY what was on the tests. oh and TAKE GOOD NOTES. if you don't take notes, you will fail. her test are based on her lectures. and he 10 questions quiz's are out of the book.the quiz's are kinda hard though. Much harder then exams. TAKE HER! Class's are boring though
Not a very bright teacher. Very easy A, my high school history was harder..gives open book quizes( written by her grad students not her) so very irrelvant to her lectures. Very monotone, unenthused prof.exams are extremly easy/gives exact review sheet with exact qs to study. Assigns 5 novels to read that are worth zero pts. Waste of money, but easy
Bad...just bad. The workload is not too bad. She does grade pretty easily. However, I just wish she didn't teach with an extreme bias toward her political beliefs.
All she does is lecture all hour but overall it is an easy class. Dont expect to be let out early often. Her book review paper is pretty easy, you dont need to read the whole book. Basically the only class you need to go to is the day of the review. All the stuff on the review sheet is on the exams.
Very easy prof. Of course her political beliefs show in her lectures, what prof's doesn't? She has a sense of humor that only 'geeks' will get(she's a Trekkie) She lectures all hour but exams are right out of HER notes, not the book-so take good notes. Very easy class that'll cut out 2 gen eds, just do the simple work in class required & get >3.5
Great teacher, very enthusiastic and willing to explain anything further. She makes it very clear what to study for on her exams.
She loves making you read the book. She's obsessed with the book. Notes in class are important!
I promise you it's boring as hell, but you'll pass. She goes into more detail than is reasonable or necessary, the quizzes kind of suck, but the exams and writing assignments are fair. Could be worse.
She can be boring, especially if you're taking her at 8 AM, but she is knowledgeable and she tries. The class is pretty easy. You can get away without doing the reading if you wanted. Take notes and attend class, because her final is cumulative. I liked her though, I'd take her again, if I had to.
Very easy class. She gives you the outlines, just take notes. she tells you exactly what is on the midterm and final. Open book quizzes are easy. Book review is not bad at all.
Very easy class. She gives you the outlines, just take notes. she tells you exactly what is on the midterm and final. Open book quizzes are easy. Book review is not bad at all.
Miles is a great professor. Very passionate and has a sense of humor. Quizzes are open book and her exams are right off her notes and she gives you reviews with what will be on them. Book review was easy. Offers a lot of extra credit. Kept me interested. Finished with a 4.0. I Highly recommend her and would take a class with her again.
Very easy class. Quizzes are all open book, sometimes take-home. Gives handouts about what's exactly on the exams. Really funny lady, always in a good mood. Take this class, you'll enjoy it even if you don't like history. Just come to class and take notes.
Great teacher! She knows a lot about history and makes it fun. She tells great, true stories about her family. There are open book quizzes, sometimes take home. She also shows videos and video clips. There is a book to read and a paper to write. You can earn extra credit if you type of the video notes. Best history teacher ever!
She was a decent teacher. Very easy and has really easy quizzes and tests. Quizzes are open book and she gives study guides for exactly what will be on the test. The textbook is the most boring thing on the planet and I'm a history major so it was weird. She was a good teacher, but I wish she went a little more in depth sometimes.
I absolutely hate history but she made this class fun. She is very funny and very nice. Some of her lectures can be somewhat boring but I enjoyed taking her class. You do need to read the textbook and other readings to pass the class however. I would highly recommend her.
Nice professor but class is a waste of time. The amount of work you have to do for this class is not worth the points. Take the final for example, 200 questions for only 25 points of your final grade. Although Prof. Miles is nice and helpful I would not take her class again.
DONT TAKE THIS! I have this at 8am and its so hard to stay awake. She lectures all the time and you have to read three awful books. The reading work load is way to much for a gen ed. The quiz's are open book but are still tricky sometimes. I wouldn't take this again.
The class is easy and the workload is light, but its obvious that she isn't a historian and half the stuff she says is downright stupid. Plus she assumes that our generation doesn't understand anything but cell phones and its ridiculous.
Very nice professor and super easy class. She lectures the entire hour, but you won't find an easier history class with a nicer and more helpful teacher. Exams are easy, all quizzes were take home!
VERY easy class. She lectures the entire hour, but the information is interesting. The workload is very light! She does require students to read 3 books and write a paper on one, but I didn't think reading them we're really necessary, and I was able to get a 4.0 only reading pieces of it. Every quiz is open book and gives the exam questions.
She is very nice and passionate about the subject. lectures the entire hour. TAKE NOTES!!! for the final she will test you on exactly what she talked about in all the lectures. Gives you the mid term and final to study for so no excuse to fail. She does grade the review paper kinda hard.
She is very passionate about what she teaches. Take notes in class. Turn in all the extra credit. *make sure to have her read over your paper before you turn it in, she will tell you have to get a 100%. Use the index for the open book quizzes. Skim over the reading before the quizzes.
Awesome prof! Weekly quizes but they are all open book and very easy. One paper, 2 exams. She tells you EXACTLY what will be on the exams so make good use of the review sheet. She lectures the whole hour but the class is very easy. Take ample notes and keep your self up-to-date with the reading and you should be fine.
She's great. Lots of extra credit opportunity's and the study guide for the exam is exactly what's on the exam.
Pretty easy class. Weekly quizzes, (all open note) 2 exams and 1 paper that I wrote and did not even read the book. She's genuinely a nice person, too. Very motherly.
Really great! Very helpful if you every have questions. Bring a laptop so you can take notes because her lecutres are very helpful. Not the most intresting meterail but really great professor! I would take her class again
Easy class and good professor. She takes attendance and counts it as part of your grade so come to class. there are open note quizzes each week but they are easy and she gives 6 point extra credit which helps too.
PHENOMENAL professor! She is extremely passionate about history and that helps make lectures interesting and memorable. First history course I've actually retained information I learned. Very helpful and approachable. Offers extra credit, open book quizzes, exam study guides tell you exactly what to study. Take her!
Lecture daily that are outlined and attendance is counted. Weekly quizzes that are open note and small writing assignments. Tells you exactly what you need to know for the final. Highly recommended.
Originally, I was really intimidated by Prof. Miles. She seemed really strict and had a lot of rules, however, she's really nice to talk to and very understanding. I would absolutely take a class with her again!
She is the sweetest lady ever. and she has such a passion for history. The class was pretty easy. Attendence counts, weekly quizzes(open book), a midterm, a final, 2 books, and a paper. I would highly recommend taking her. very understanding and very kind. However, do not use your phone during class. she HATES that.
At first, I was intimidated by Professor Miles, but she is a very nice woman and a fair grader. Gives study guides for the midterm and final. I had open book quizzes and 1 paper. She makes jokes sometimes and offers extra credit for answering movie questions. Easy class and I would recommend her.
Clear and concise notes along with guides to both exams
Take a different class. Teacher has huge mood swings, and doesn't really seem like she wants to be there. Bashes students on a semi regular basis. Lectures are verbal and don't come from the text. I honestly don't know how the reviews are as good as they are.
Makes you buy 3 other books besides the textbook and you have a book quiz on two of them and then the last one you have to write a 6 page paper. Gives Quizzes once a week, midterm that's 40 questions on terms and definitions.
It's a good class for any Freshmen. I would only choose her class if you're serious about school and don't want to waste peoples' time. Effort is expected in her class but if you start out strong it isn't much work. Overall she's a very nice lady if you respect her and her rules.
I love Prof. Miles! She lectures the entire hour but I thought they were pretty simple and interesting. She makes jokes and is really super nice. The class itself is SO easy. She literally tells you the exact questions on the exams. Quizzes are open book. Lots of extra credit opportunities- at one point I had a 104%. Take her!!!!
I really like Professor Miles. She is definitely conservative and it shows. She is pretty funny and her class is super simple. I didn't even read the book she assigned for a "book reviewpaper" and I got 100% on it. Take her class for an easy A- you have to be really dumb not to get an A.
The class was interesting and relatively easy, but be ready to spend a good amount of time on reading. Tons of extra credit opportunities, short open book quiz for each chapter, midterm and finalshort essay. Make sure to take notes on the lectures, they will help on the exams. Not extremely difficult as long as you read and take notes.
Pros- EXTREMELY clear in her rubrics for assignments and literally gives you the exam material to review. Always on schedule with syllabus, no surprises, and funny and engaging in lectures. Cons- So much reading and note-taking that it took up way too much time for a 100-level class, and you HAVE to do it to pass- there is no way around it.
Go to class or you will miss lectures that are important for the final. Lectures are interesting & she gives extra credit. Take full advantage because it WILL help your grade. She is good about following the syllabus so even if you miss a class you will know what you missed. You do have to do reading for quizzes but they're open book! Fun class!
She is a great teacher, she is funny and makes the class go by fast. There are quizzes every week, but its open book so its not that bad. There is a paper on a book and even if you read the book which is hard enough to read, the paper is hard. overall good class.
She is one of my favorite professors at the University. She really makes history both interesting and fun. She tells amazing stories about her family's history which she incorporates into the lectures. Plenty of extra credit. I easily attained a 4.0. I would love to take another class with her. Attendance is mandatory, and it taken for a grade.
Great professor overall, I highly recommend her. Her class consists entirely of lectures and PowerPoint slides, so get ready to take notes. However, I found her lectures to be very interesting and easy to understand. The quizzes are open book, which is also a plus. If you love History, you'll like Professor Miles.
Professor Miles is clearly passionate about history. Her lectures are usually long, but pretty interesting. She is a little tough when it comes to writing assignments so be prepared. She gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit, and as long as you do the required reading and study, there is no reason you shouldn't do well.
Puts up a power point then reads everything she says from her sheet of paper, like a bad student presentation. Except it's the entire class period, and every class period. It's excruciating as a morning class, but could be better in the afternoon maybe? No moodle, instead has a class website/blog. Strict. Weekly open-book book quizzes.
Super easy tests. Literally gives you the test to study (not kidding). Weekly open book quizzes that are relatively easy. Overall really easy class but you do have to read A TON. Super nice teacher who really knows her stuff. I put in about 1 hour a week if that and I almost got a 4.0.
take this professor for hst 115!! easiest class ever! she takes attendance but it counts towards your grade, gives multiple extra credit opportunities, quizzes are open book, open note. Basically gives you the answers for the midterm and the final is off the notes from the lectures.
I enjoyed this course. She made the material interesting. A LOT of reading required. Quizzes are open book, you still need to read. She tells you EXACTLY what she's going to ask on the midterm&final. There's one big paper on one book, too. Attendance is required. She has no tolerance for cellphone usage during class, so you gotta respect that.
I have had professor Miles a couple of times, and she is one of the best professors at Oakland. Very enjoyable class, and you will learn a lot.
Professor Miles is the best. She tells you exactly what she expects from you on everything you do. Get ready to read. There is one paper due for the class and it is probably the hardest book I have read to this day, very hard to understand. Other than that, I highly recommend her to anyone. One of my top 3 professors thus far for sure.
PSA: If you're not willing to read 3 different books AND a textbook DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! This class is extremely reading heavy. There are weekly quizzes that come from the textbook. Just because it's open books does not mean they're easy. I could go on for hours about how much I regret taking this class.
She was a knowledgable prof with her expectations clear. I found it a bit much to read 3 books in addition to the text during summer, but I understand why and do appreciate history more than I did previously. The book review is easy, she has a template and will revise it before the due date. She allows up to 6 pt extra credit. Read before the quiz.
She can talk for hours about history! she is very knowledgeable. She is easy going and funny. You have 2 big exams and then a couple quizzes that are open book quizzes.
Hard grader. Nice teacher. Caring but difficult class if you're not into reading a lot.
Very clear about expectations but if you are not willing to read, then I would not recommend taking her. However, her class was very easy! Open book quizzes every week from the textbook, two books, and one paper. Her lectures are quite boring but she is very passionate about history
She is a funny teacher and very knowledgeable. You do have to read a lot in this class, she makes the class read four different books. There's two exams, one paper, and weekly quizzes. Don't let that scare you off, she's a really cool professor. Occasionally, she ends class early.
Talks very funny, but what she teaches sticks with you. Very good professor who loves history. Exams are easy, everything else is kind of hard. In general, good class.
She is very knowledgeable with history, but lectures are very long. The final is 50% based on the lectures, so you need to go and take good notes. There is a book review that she gives you the exact outline of what she wants. There are also weekly open book quizzes, two book discussions and two exams. The exams require a ton of studying.
Class is very well structured. She is very intelligent and great to listen to because she truly loves the subject. Lots of reading including three books besides the textbook. Gave guided notes so you can actually get information from the lectures also very thorough study guides. Overall, loved the class but be ready to read.
a bit monotone so it's hard to listen to. Treats you like you're a little kid.
I loved Professor Miles. She is clearly knowledgable and passionate about history and that comes through in her lectures. She tells you exactly what she wants and the class is pretty easy as long as you at least skim the reading. Basically gives you a step by step of what's on the exam. Would recommend.
The class was very lecture-oriented so be ready to pay attention and stay alert because it can be very boring. I wanted it to be a bit more interesting and she is very monotone so a lot of people fell asleep. The quizzes are straight from the book so try to skim before class if you do not read the book. They are simple quizzes and follow the book.
She's a terrible grader, class is easy
Lectures are a must and a lot of reading. She is very kind and trys to make her lectures more exciting. She gives good feedback on essays and is straightforward with what you need to improve/fix. Class is very old fashioned and doesnt use noodle.
She is a great person, but as a professor not my favorite. We get graded on participation, she reads off the slides but the most useful information is when she talks more in depth about each section. Quizes are open book, mid term and finale include papers and multiple choice and open answered questions
She is very nice and helpful. Quizzes each week. We had two exams and two papers to write. Plenty of extra credit opportunities.
Very smart and stuck to the book. Long class but wasnt terrible. Need to study with her a lot
Professor Miles is awesome. She made her grading guidelines pretty clear. I was impressed with how well organized her lectures were. Although the class is a lot of reading if you stay on top of it you will be able to easily do well in this class. She is not a tough grader as long as you show knowledge of course material.
Heavy textbook use. Lectures are very informative as she is extremely knowledgeable in history. Reasonable and clear on grading requirements and guidelines. Don't look past due dates! Look to syllabus@!
She makes a 1000 level class feel like a 4000 level class. Gives you extra credit opportunity but extra credit material is on test and exams, so if you don't do the extra credit you're kind screwed
She makes a 1000 level class feel like a 4000 level class. Gives you extra credit opportunity but extra credit material is on test and exams, so if you don't do the extra credit you're kind screwed. She give tons of work and her exams are ridiculosly long. Final exam could be 150+ questions.
