Doesn't test like she teaches... she is half the reason i have changed my major!
Exams were very hard...not anything like lecture.
good god transfer from this lab!!!!
She is very unorganized
Her exams are insane!
tries her hardest to make everyone understand, hard exams
Very late in returning tests!! Hard tests. Lectures easy to understand.
honestly writes everything she says, boring, tests don't relate to material
Test NOT related to material, doesnt care about the individual, horrible!!!!!
Very nice and helpful, knows her stuff
I didn't know Chemistry could actually be interesting before I took this class.
sweetheart, great at explaining pchem
she doesn't seem to care about students; tests are nothing like notes/hmwrk/etc.
Boring, unclear, tedious, R 3 adj. describing the class. I now hate biochem!

If only the lecture halls where she teaches were equipped with ejection seats...
Have you ever wanted to kill yourself, if so, I wouldn't go to her lectures
She is extremely hard. Tests harder than she teaches in notes.
Really excellent prof. This class could have been really difficult and she only made it partly so. Very friendly, helpful, and nice lectures.
Very nice. Seems to want her students to do well. Her tests are hard and you have to study-it is a hard class but I think she is a great teacher.
Very nice lady. Her tests are really hard, but if you go to her she will help you. Better than Nikkel. She really wants her students to do well. If I had to retake the class I would take her again. I recommend her.
Very enthusiastic about topic - makes you laugh - tests are harder than her notes/lecture make you think - keep up on homework & ask questions! She's very willing to help...I'd take her again.
Karpen is AWESOME! She makes biochem fun & explains things very well. I would highly recommend her so anyone. Tests can be challenging, but very fair. She'll do anything she can to help you do well. It's a hard class, but she's a great teacher for it!
Study from notes and do the homework and anyone can do well. Dont waste time going over the book everything she wants you to know she puts on the board. Do not take her for lab, she is a very hard grader.
Tests are harder than notes. Read the book. Very scatter brained and unorganized. Likes to throw in last minute things the night before exams. Always slow to get tests back. I feel like I didn't learn a thing. Run and take Wallar!
She's one of the best chem profs I have ever had. She makes you want to pay attention because of how funny she is (i.e.she thinks globular molecules are "beautiful"). For once I didn't dread going to a chem class. Take her if you can!
karpen is a cool prof, she's really out there sometimes, but her crazy analogies really help you learn the material. sometimes she's a little unorganized when it comes to notes, but I would recommend taking her for bio chem.
Karpen blows. She has no ability to attend to deatails. Two words: air head. She is very picky with student's work, but makes stupid mistakes and omissions herself ALL THE TIME. She laughs a lot and seems friendly, which is probably true, but her teaching sucks. Avoid her.
Enthusiastic professor. Tough grader. She will mark off for small mistakes, mistakes she even makes herself while lecturing and writing test/homework questions.
This teacher is horrible. Very unclear on what to actually study, marks off major points for mistakes she makes herself in lecture. Had to force her to make a study guide because she is so vague in lecture notes. Avoid this teacher and you'll be doing yourself a favor. Wallar is who you should take.
Great Professor. She is very amusing and will make you laugh out loud. You will do fine if you take good notes and use your book to clear up difficult concepts.
She seems nice and easy going in class, but go to her office hours and she'll bite your head off. Take 461 with one of the other biochem profs and it will be a completely different (better!) class.
Karpen is very nice but extrememly vague on topics. She assumes students already grasp what she is talking about, which they don't. She goes off on random tangents of talking and has horrible analogies that leave you confused. Expect to be tested on things she never talked over and are not in the book if you take a class of hers. Horrible prof.
She's kind of boring. Talks to us like we're five years old. Doesn't stick to the topic well. Not really that hard though, she is somewhat forgiving.
She is the best teacher at this college.
Organic/Biochemistry is a difficult subject to grasp. Dr. Karpen does a great job trying new ways to help her students understand the material. Very down to earth and always willing to help. Best prof I've had in any science class by far.
Dr. Mary Karpen is a very knowledgable professor. She makes class fun and does whatever she can to make sure that all of her students understand. She is very helpful during office hours and goes out of her way to give individual help. It's a tough class, but stay focused and go to class everyday and you'll be fine.
Dr. Karpen is an amazing professor, really interested in making sure students learn, and easy to talk to. Her lectures go fast, so make sure you always have lots of paper. She even bought pizza for our class twice! I would take another class from her in a heartbeat.
Our class was small (17), & Dr. Karpen said every one of us could get an A. I did, and it was because of Dr. Karpen. She made herself available before and after class, as well as during office hours. She used non-traditional types of teaching, lots of visuals & group work. If we didn't understand something, she worked w/us until we did. Great prof!
Dr. Karpen's nice, and she tries to make class fun, but her lectures are often disorganized and difficult to follow. She is very willing to meet outside of class, but her explanations often still confuse. Tests were fair; however, and a good grade is not hard to get.
Overall good professor. Fair exams/quizzes. Gives practice exams and review sheets. Go over those thoroughly and make sure to read the text and you should be good to go! Also references both textbooks (old & new). I bought the old edition and saved over $100 which was a major plus.
Awesome professor! Nice, down to earth, and very approachable. She gives homework sets and practice exams that are very helpful with preparing for the exams.
She is a great professor that teaches well, and has a great personality. I would highly recommend her. GILF.
Great professor. Was very intimidated at the beginning, Chem. never was a strong subject for me. I have an A half way through this semester and it is because of her and her strategies. Great TEACHER!
Shes a nice lady but honestly her lectures are unorganized and she doesnt post grades. Recommend reading the book for organic part because it clarified her disorganized notes. Her web assign is much better then owl but it doesnt reflect her test questions. At least there are no quizes. Exams are tricky and her multiple choice nearly impossible.
Great professor, very enthusiastic and fun. I was worried about this class but wound up getting an A. She can be unclear sometimes but don't be afraid to raise your hand and ask any questions, she is very willing to re-explain things. Definitely study for the exams because she likes to make them tricky. She brings snacks for exams! Highly Recommend
Awesome teacher
Wonderful professor teaching an awful class. If you have to take this class, get her! She makes chemistry so much less boring!
She was great! I loved her. She was energetic and excited about what she was teaching, which made it easy to pay attention in class. She made it fun which can be difficult with organic chem. Highly recommend her.
Dr. Karpen is a very upbeat and energetic professor. She makes the lectures go by quickly... even for night classes! Her notes are very well organized and she goes a good pace that is easy to follow and understand. I would recommend her for any chem class.
Professor Karpen is an extremely kind and fun professor. She does tend to go over information and quiz you very quickly after. You have a quiz about every week and 5 exams. She does grade tough, her exams are multiple choice and fill in the blank. Some parts can have multiple answers. Attendance isn't mandatory.
Professor Karpen is great! I would definitely recommend her to anyone. She is a very nice and funny person who is always willing to help! She made organic/biochem pretty interesting and made me want to come to class! If you can, take her!!
I had heard that organic chemistry was very difficult, so I was a little afraid of the class before I took it from Dr. Karpen. She explained things clearly and was always willing to help students who didn't understand something. I made an A- in the class. She made organic chemistry seem no harder than introductory chemistry.
I have always struggled with chemistry and was convinced that 230 would be the end of me. But Karpen is phenomenal! I can't stress it enough: take her. She is willing to go in depth when you ask questions but she's also totally not intimidating and will go to great lengths to help you understand. Even if it means blowing up balloons!
Professor Karpen was the absolute best chemistry professor I have ever had. She was clear with her teaching and always more than willing to help you understand in or out of class. She is one hilarious lady and she cares for her students very much. I would take her again in a heart beat.
good prof. had her for class, discussion, and lab. she is fun and exams are not too hard
Professor Karpen is one of the funniest lady I have ever met. She makes organic chem and biochem interesting with her metaphors and life stories. The tests can be rough, but as long as you study and go to her office hours, you'll be good. She's willing to help as much as she can. There's no way for me to completely explain how great she is!
Dr. Karpen is the absolute best! She is more than willing to help you. If you go to her office hours you will find yourself at a much better place for the test. If you aren't understanding something GO SEE HER, she will clear it up for you in a snap. TAKE HER. TAKE HER. TAKE HER.
This class is really hard in general but she makes things easier to understand. If you go in and ask questions and get help she WILL help you out in terms of grading. Make an effort to really understand it (even if you still don't get it) and she will help you out.
Dr. Karpen is really funny and smart! She was an blast to have as a professor and I learned alot from her! She cares very deeply about student learning and will go out of her way to make sure you understand the concepts. There is a big group project and she expects participation in the research papers she assigns! Would definitely recommend!!
Dr. Karpen is great especially if you have a chemistry background. She is awesome at giving partial credit on tests that will save your grade. Her lectures are engaging and she's hilarious. She can be a little vague when explaining things so ask questions. Makes guided notes packets. Would take again!
Take HER!!!! Very clear lectures and discussions will likely clear up any misunderstandings. Loved the class and now organic chemistry! Got an A.
Karen is very good at what she does. Knows her stuff and lectures very clearly with fill in the blank notes. I hope I can take her for chem 231
Karpen is such a great professor. She makes chemistry somehow fun? If you don't understand something she is more than happy to meet and help if only for 10 minutes. Definitely need to attend class all notes are her own. Tests are tricky but I managed to get out with a decent grade. Overall, would take her again.
Karpen is an extremely good professor. I was so scared of failing going into this class, an somehow came out with an A-. She makes chemistry very clear and is always there when you need help. Only like 3 quizzes, and gives practice quizzes to help. Exams are tedious but she is a VERY good grader, often gives like -.5 off instead of full. Best Prof.
Put easiness as a 3 because if you dont go to class you wont be able to experience Dr. karpens amazing lectures. Its not an easy A because you actually learn it, Karpen just makes it feel easy. BEST prof Ive ever had. Good luck thinking youll sleep in lecture her humor will have you laughing your bum off. she really cares about her students sucess.
I would definitely take Karpen again. This is a super tough class but if you study notes you'll do fine. She also gives partial credit on exams which is nice.
She was hilarious and made a boring subject interesting. 5 exams, lenient grader. She knew what she was talking about and used funny analogies to help students understand. She is my favorite professor, wish I could take another one of her classes.
My favorite professor so far! Her lectures are extremely helpful, she explains things clearly, and she is very engaging. She always has a positive attitude, and she often explains things in a hilarious way so that you will never forget the concept. You can tell that she really wants her students to get good grades AND learn. Everyone loved her.
CHM 232 is a hard class but Karpen is a great professor. She is really fun and is a great help when you go to her outside of class. Tests are very challenging.
She is a great person to know outside of class and her personality is awesome. However as a teacher she feels all over the place and the lectures are tough. The exams are passable but drain you by the end. Overall she doesn't cut slack on anything so you have to work hard for every point. If you get stressed out easily this isn't your professor.
She is very enthusiastic in the classroom, but her lectures feel a bit scattered. Her exams are incredibly difficult and I can honestly say I never felt prepared for any of them. She is also a tough grader. This class made Organic Chem feel like a breeze in my opinion.
Dr. Karpen is friendly, helpful and truly wants to educate her students. The amount of work she gives/material she expects you to memorize is EXCESSIVE though. For a 200 level course, it was awfully intense. She's usually a 400 level professor and didn't tone it down to 200 level well. She's lecture heavy; it can be boring but she does a good job.
Great Prof, funny and charismatic. She can get all over the place sometimes but it's just part of the ride. Some time management issues but she compensates for it by only testing on what she has covered in class. She is a great prof. Tests are straightforward and she gives study guides. Homework helps reinforce knowledge. Took it over summer.
Seems nice in class but makes you feel like an idiot in office hours. Very confusing and seems like she doesn't know much of what she is teaching either. Tests are not straightforward and are too long for the amount of time she gives you. You must commit a lot of time into this class and forget about your other classes. Grading scale is not fair.
All exams were often take-home and took 14+ hours to complete that were basically "use the internet and teach yourself" and is impossible to do well on. If you put the work in, homework is an easy A. With the pandemic, the final exam is just a project and not cumulative. I learned nothing about biochemistry. Be prepared to have your camera on!
I am not sure why somebody said that test are impossible to do well on because if you put your work in you will do very well in class, it is a 400 level course after all . Homework helped a lot with understanding the material. Prof Karpen is very accessible outside of class. I really liked her and I hope she teaches CHM 463!
Her lectures are easy to understand because of the way she teaches the content. She has lots of ways you can earn points in the class, so the final grade isn't just based on exams, but it includes lots of assignments and quizzes, which I think is nice. Exams are somewhat difficult but not if you do all the homework, understand and ask Q's.
Easiest A I've ever had. Her grading scale is so generous to the point where a 360/510 points is an A. I was able to reach enough points in about 10 weeks into the course and stopped showing up. Really good class to take if you need a physical science without lab and want an A. Would not recommend if you care about and enjoy chemistry.
She was very energetic and tried veery hard to get the class engaged. Most of the time it was taking notes, but she'd stop in the middle of notes and assign group class work and half of the time we didn't know what we were doing and just kinda waited for the answers. I did like how she graded for the course; it made me less stressed.
I had Professor Karpen for CHM 230 lab and she was awesome. It was an 8am lab and she always had a ton of energy and was excited to teach. She was a super easy grader and so helpful. Best lab professor I've ever had.
Absolutely a queen. Had her for my lab and my partner and I lagged behind a little but she was so patient and laughed it off when I arrived late or something. I have to retake the lecture because that class made very little sense, but the lab was doable thanks to all her help. I'm gonna miss her she's like my grandma now!
