Great prof, actually cares, makes sense, tries her best to help students with her own practice problems only problem...she doesnt grade on a curve and only 3 exams...none are dropped
Course content difficult but she gives students many useful tools to succeed; study guides, problems, and practice exams with answers. Lectures sometimes very quick so it is necessary to read ahead. She curves grades at the end if needed. Excellent prof!
great professor to take orgo 1 with....very helpful and explains everything
I didn't really like her. On the last day I told her I would see her in hell.

At first she is overwhelming, then when u figure out that her tests are a breeze after you do the 324 page packet of questions for each chapter that she gives you. I guarantee you will get an A, and isnt that all that matters in college?
she is def one of the best profs i've ever come across in my life. she treats u like ur a kid and gives u so much work that if you do it all you will def get an A she gives u so much prep work TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. yes orgo is hard but she makes it as easy as she can for you!
awful teacher. Her exams are so hard. She makes you study from her notees + book + her 300 pages of study guide questions. Take this class with Maguire, trust me.
very organized & helpfull, remember that this subject is not easy.if u realy want to learn you need to put effort with the teacher don't expect to learn without practicing.the only bad thing is she goes fast in lecture b/c she uses 1st & last few min giving u practice problems.works hard 4 u to learn
i have done over 3000 chemistry problems in her class, part of the reason is because this is my second time taking this class. i have these problems so engrained that i will probably remember them for another 200 years
Great Proffesor she makes everything really clear, you just have to work on the hundred problems she gives, but if you don't mind a little work you will do great the tests aren't hard as long as you do the practice problems
very good and truely cares about the students. do all the work she gives u and u should be fine in that class.
Dr. Pflum is probably one of the best chemistry professors ar Wayne State. She is very clear, helpful, and concerned about her students. Be sure to take advantage of the pracice problems and exams that she provides. Also, never ever skip the lectures because you'll definitely pay for it.
Awsome teacher. Her lectures are very straight forward and clear. Her exams are not that hard and she always trys to make the concepts as clear as possible.
smart and organized teacher. helpful and enthusiastic. Consistent time and effort. NO JOKE. don't take this clauss if u don't have time for it. especially w/ pflum. u gotta work ur ass off. but then it's worth it.... goooooooodluck
this is an awsome teacher... she knows what chemistry is unlike others... very helpful easy to get an if u do all the practice problems avaliable online...
She is the best you will find at wayne. SHe had her baby during our class, and the subs were less then par. Old test, practice exams, review sessions, shes funny and entertianing. If you want to do well in orgo take her!!
You're better off with Maguire or with Montgomery.
Possibly, the greatest professor in all of Wayne State. Never have I ever seen a professor care so much about the students before. Does not try to trick you, she really really wants you to learn the material and not just memorize. She never gives up on you, shows up to lecture even after her pregn
Best teacher I ever had, I never read the book bec she explains ever thing VERY WELL, she is nice, her test look exactly the same like the ones she posts on black board. you can get an A easily. But if you miss one lect, you will miss alot and you will think she is hard.
cOME TO CLASS - DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS - GAURANTEED A.
Pflum rocks! She gives excellent study guides and tons of problems to practice. Easy on tests if you do the problems. Not tricky at all. No need to memorize just understand what you're doing.
I switched to Pflum out of Raban's class. I was working with a 2-week deficit and got an A. She is so well organized and she teaches with such ease that it is hard not to get an A out of her class. I hope her and her baby is well. Pflum rocks!!
You're better off with Maguire
I loved Dr. Pflum. She is an excellent teacher, and she made me like Orgo. If you use the resources she gives you, you'll do fine in her class. I had Maguire for Orgo 2 and eventhough I did better in his class than I did in Pflum's, I still liked Pflum better. Too bad she doesn't teach Orgo 2.
Pflum is my favorite teacher at Wayne. YOU LEARN from her. She isn't a breeze, you do have to study, but she is prob the most organized and clear teacher I've had. She gives lots of practice problems, and he exams are VERY fair. Her notes are clear, thorough and neat, and I think shes so much better than Maguire. She's da BOMB!
DR. Pflum is very easy. You just have to attend lectures and do the practice tests that she gives you and you will do very well in the class.
Best Chem teacher. Made orgo very easy. Explains everything very clearly and uses many examples. If you attend lectures it is almost impossible to fail. Excellent Prof.
gr8 teaher
Very ambitious when teaching a lab. "Funky" experiments, required us to find our own procedures, tested heavily on NMR/DEPT, has extreme standards for lab reports (perhaps 2 people got above 90 on any of these reports all semester). Granted, this was her 1st time teaching 5510, but don't expect it to be much smoother in future semesters.
Dr.Pflum rocks!! She is the best chemistry teacher in the whole wide world. She is very clear, helpful and nice. I admit the tests are a little hard, but Orgo CHM is all about challenge. Take her class!!
Dr. Pflum is a great professor, she is extremely clear, very enthusiastic and helpful... It's not a blow off class though... But if you are willing to work a little and are worried about what prof to take... DR. PFLUM IS THE ONE!
Okay, I dunno how people say she's a great teacher, because she really isn't. I mean I'm doing good in the class but I've had to learn everything on my own because she teaches the covers most of the stuff in lecture and her exams cover the rest. A is possible if you are willing to open the book and learn the stuff by yourself because she wont help.
The "best teacher ever" stuff is a little exagerated, she's O.K. as a teacher. Orgo is hard...that's not her fault, but she moves really fast and you could get buried and left behind quickly. As a person, she is nothing but nice, plesant, enthusiastic, and an all around sweetheart. She gives TONS of study guides and practice exams. I loved her.
She doesnt move too fast. Every orgo teacher moves at the same pace cuz theres a certain amount of the book they must complete in the semester. Shes very helpful and enthusiastic. I like her. But I think its easier to get an A in Zibucks class cuz there is more of a cushion with points than in Pflums class. Both great teachers and equal difficulty.
Great teacher. Gives you great notes and all of the practice tests and problems you'd need to do well in her class. Teaches the subject very well, and if you don't get an A or a B it's only your own fault for either not paying attention, skipping lectures or not taking advantage of how good of a teacher she really is.
Very good lecturer! She's fun and energetic and makes the material interesting.
Pflum is the best chemistry professor at wayne state. She's very enthusiastic and will keep you awake throughout every lecture. Her tests are not hard if you do all the practice problems she assigns. She is definitly the best Orgo teacher and it's possible to earn an A just as long as you do the practice problems.
Excellent professor! Her notes are VERY clear and very organized. She offers study guides, sample problems, previous term exams, so it's impossible not to do well as long as you consistently do the work! A total of 3 exams, 12 online quizzes (2 lowest drop) and the final! Her exams and grading are very fair!

She is a good professor and good at teaching. The class is definately difficult.. you have to study study study to learn all the mechanisms. But if you have to take it, take it with her.. she's probably one of the best orgo teachers to take it with.
She is the best Orgo teacher in the whole wide world. She is very passionate about the subjest and cares about her students, she wants to help every one to understand the subject in order to pass.

best teacher in my life. made chem so exciting. easy to get an A, just go to lecture and study that. i didnt use the book once (except for hmwk) and i got an A. shes so helpful. seriously, the best teacher ive ever had in my life!
She is best prof ever for organic chemistry. her exam are friendly , just understand her notes and practice problem you'll get an A and B's.
excellent teacher. Her teaching technique is like Maguire and Zibuck. Her exams are straight forward and fair. She post old exams for practice which are really helpful. I highly recommend her, I loved orgo because of her and got an easy A! Go to all her lectures.
I enjoyed this class. For the exams be sure you know every detail, of every step, of every reaction, of every lab. You will need them for the exam. Make sure you can do all the mechanisms cold and do the practice exams. All in all, I liked the class.
What an airhead! Not organized and not prepared for class. The labs were more like busy work, than reinforcing what we were learning in Organic 2 lecture. Another useless Wayne State class and instructor...
Who the hell writes these ratings? She will never admit when she is wrong and even though you spend 4 hours in lab a week, lab reports are only worth 40% of your grade. The exams are worth most of your overall grade.
Dr.Pflum was an awesome instructor. However, this class is very demanding, requires lots of attention and studying. This class is meant to train students to be future chemists. So just because it's a two credit class, don't take it easy! One of the hardest classes. You really have to work your ass off!
if she doesn't like you then she will grade you harshly no matter how implausible the excuse. also she likes to play nasty mind games with you when she knows stuff about your personal life. also this prof did indeed make sexual advances. don't take her class if you can avoid it.
She is NOT A Good professor. I attended almost all the lectures. She goes super fast and you don't learn much from her because she expects u to know everything about organic Chem before taking the class. Our class average for every exam was a failing grade. Avoid taking her if you can.
Ok, what the ****? her rating is so inacturate. Im an A student, and chemistry is a stron suit of mine, but she is HORRIBLE. WOW. too fast, too much work. then the exams are almost TOO simple, so you fail. GRADES INCREDIBLY HARSHLY. Orgo is easy, but her like all WSU chem department, make it too hard. stay the hell away from this clown.
High pitched overly excited BABBLE for 45 minutes, 3 days a weeks!!! would YOU want to go to class??? neither did 75% of our class.. If anyone sees this woman buying any enegy drinks grab it and RUN..
Ok, I seriously don't know what all these people are talking about. Dr. Pflum is AWESOME! I'm an A student, never opened the book, did her practice problems and aced all the exams. You learn by doing her practice problems and reading her notes. This class can't get any easier, seriously. Plus, you actually do learn IF you put the effort. Good Luck!
Wow...her study guides and practice problems do not prepare you for the exam, they are actually misleading. Avoid at all costs...I attended every class, got every mechanism, every reaction, wrote my own notes, and it still wasn't enough.
She is a horrbile prof! I got a high 90 on the first exam because she took her time and went over the concepts thoroughly- the second and third examsmy grades dropped drasticially. I did all the practice problems and quizzes but she rushed through the concepts ( for her sake of finishing the material). Avoid at all costs! VERY harsh marking!
This teacher isn't that great. Practice problems and study guides are very misleading. She rushed through the last eight chaptrs just to finish the material. No wonder the class average was terrible!
Lectures recorded.Lecture notes posted.Ton of practice problems given, not mandatory, just for your benefit.Study guides for for every chapter.Practice exams and past exams given. She provides the students with every imaginable resource to learn and do well.If you can't learn organic chemistry with all of this, honestly, you're simply not trying.
I have audited this class twice while working up to taking it. She is by far the easiest professor teaching org o at wayne. Everything the good comments say is true, she is very helpful. Go to lecture too. She only teaches in fall/winter
This prof is great. she goes over the chapters very thoroughly so that it is easy to understand. she gives alot of partial credit on her exams and she is very flexible. take full advantage of her practice problems because they only help on the exams.
Pflum was an awesome teacher for Orgo 1. She was extremely organized, unlike some of the other Orgo profs, and she provided a ton of study guides. I never opened the book once for her class because the study guides she gave were more like exam questions. I definitely recommend! Hard class, nonetheless, but she made it fun and easy to understand!
she is a very good teacher or maybe thats just compared to my last orgo teacher (prof. winter)
Professor Pflum is awesome! She explains everything really well and gives you practice exams, old exams and practice problems to help you do well on the exams. There's no excuse to do badly in this class. She made learning orgo so much easier than I had expected it to be! Put in the effor and you'll get an A! I highly recommend her!
She was a really great prof. She is really enthusiastic about the material and her exams were fairly simple.
Just took this class for Winter semester. She did not CURVE like the majority of the class was hoping/ depending on or gave ANY extra credit. Basically its all the tests- and everything after the 1st exam is HARD and DIFFICULT. Recommend a lot of effort and preparation.
Easy.
Great professor. Also, she is not bad looking at all IMO. Above average for the sciences.
The best teacher i have everrrrr had! She is positive, helpful, engaging and an amazing lecturer! Attend classes, review notes and complete her practice problems and you are guaranteed an A! I loved her and would recommend her to anyone. She made me fall in lovee with Orgo. Best teacherr in the worlddd
Wonderful teacher!! Always willing to help you out and gives excellent and clear study guides before the exams. You have to put in the work to get a decant grade however. Dr. Pflum makes class fun and interesting however and I actually enjoyed going. Would take another class of her's in a heartbeat. Her exams were very fair, as well.
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable!
Great professor! Really enthusiastic about the subject matter, and very approachable about questions. Loves real world applications, and wants students to succeed. Learn NMR as fast as you can, and study well for her exams. They're hard, but doable. Also, pay attention on lab reports.
Great professor !! Labs were long but straight forward and exams were not difficult .. Explains material very well and really knows her stuff.
Great teacher. She knows her stuff but also knows how to explain it to students. She was also the first professor i had to actually come to the labs. I never had a professor come to lab, usually its just the TA. She checked up on us at least once each lab to see how we were doing. Study for the exams and you're good. Would definetly recommend.
She seems very goofy but trust me she knows her orgo. Her lectures are boring but are crystal clear and very detailed. You wont even need the book. Exams are straight forward and easy. Dont be fooled by her goofy demeanor. She knows and very well teaches orgo. Def recommended. Easy, goofy prof but you will learn orgo. May be easiest orgo prof @ WSU
Dr. Pflum is an awesome orgo professor. She makes orgo fun and gives you a very clear explanation of what she expects. I was very nervous going into the course but I expect an A. The class has a lot of great resources: SI, peer mentors, online quizes, and practice problems/exams. Take advantage of these resources and practice as much as you can.
She made me love orgo! Explanations and lectures are perfectly clear/organized. She's not mean & actually cares about students doing well & understanding (unlike other chem profs) Tests are FAIR- her practice tests/ lectures are representative of what you'll see on exams (unlike other chem profs at Wayne who make it purposefully tricky)
Pflum is an awesome professor. She is super nice and helpful. Tests are very straight forward. Take any class with her if you can!
Very approachable professor who seems to genuinely want her students to succeed, unlike some large class professors who seem deliberately difficult. She offers many resources for students and plenty of great study materials. Would highly recommend if you want to learn the material. Tests can be challenging but there are lots of practice exams.
A great professor. Basically an awesome teacher and motivational speaker all in one. You can tell she wants her students to do well. Tests are fair-they are not tricky at all. I wouldn't say they are easy, because it is organic chemistry, but tests are straightforward. TAKE HER!!!
She was extremely easy at first. The first test was such a joke. The second test was fairly easy still. Then the third test was killer. Couldn't believe how the class took a turn for the worst. The final was just like the third test. She doesn't try to trick you at all, but the first two tests threw me off on how difficult the class truly was.
Great professor! very straightforward, took orgo 2 times before this time, she helps you relate orgo to the outside world. Orgo is hard but Dr. Pflum goes through a lot of examples during her lecture. she is Very friendly and wants to help! :) take ORGO with her
AMAZING! Dr. Pflum keeps it real, and helps you apply orgo to the outside world. If you listen to her lecture and do the work, you're guaranteed an A. She's fair and straightforward. Would take another class of hers in a heartbeat!
BEST TEACHER EVER. I actually liked orgo because of her. She is very clear and approachable and is willing to help students. Exams are pretty easy if you study hard.
She made me LOVE organic chemistry. People talk about how hard it is and it really makes you scared, but she made it so much fun!! She's extremely encouraging and wants you to do your best. Take her if you can!
Pflum is one of the best professors I've had at WSU. She has a great personality and really tries to make the class enjoyable. Her exams were straightforward and exactly like her lectures and practice exams. She is very fair and a good explainer.
hands down the best professor. do not take any professor other than her for organic one. wait for the second semester for her to teach it. i am happy she is teaching 2230 lab next semester. she is clear, funny, respectful, made me love orgo. her exams are fair and based of her notes nothing new you see on exams. got an A+ i would recommend her.
Dr. Pflum is AMAZING. I took this once before and had to drop because I was failing, now I have a 95% after two tests. She explains everything perfectly, is extremely clear, answers questions clearly, makes sure you have a solid understanding of the basics, gives you lots of options for help. And she asks for feedback to make sure you understand.
I absolutely love her! She made a subject as difficult as Organic chemistry doable and enjoyable. She is very clear with what you need to know for the exams. She does not try to trick you, very straight forward. If you are going to take Orgo at Wayne State and you have the opportunity to take it with her DO IT!!!!!!! you wont regret your decision
I failed the last time I took Organic chem, but she made it clear and understandable. Lectures are clear and concise on topics. She does practice problems daily and posts study guidesold practice exams. Her homework is very do-able and helpful for the tests. She goes out of her way to help students understand the material and wants you to succeed.
Dr. Pflum is probably the best orgo prof at wayne state. Material on her exams were clearly explained. Her goofy demeanor makes class more enjoyable and interesting. She really made me love orgo.
one of the best teachers I've had at Wayne State! Lectures were really good and tests were 100% fair. Needed to try hard to get an A because its a hard class but dr. Pflum made it enjoyable! Relatively easy teacher for such a difficult class
The class is not difficult. It's not an easy A, but go to lecture, review and study well before exams, and you'll get an A. Book problems are awful and no help, I didn't use it at all. Be sure to do her practice problems, they help a lot. Flash cards. Old school, but they work, and they'll be your savior when it comes to reactions. Use them.
Disregard any good comments. The 1st & 2nd exam are a false representation of what exams will be like. The 3rd & final exam are difficult & will kill your grade. Covers Ch. 9 which isn't Orgo 1 lect material. Squeezing in that ch. reduces quality time lecturing the rest of the chapters. So you'll be lost & it will be too late to drop after exam 2.
Amazing orgo professor!! Orgo is a tough subject, but she made it fun, enjoyable, and kept the topics really clear! Her notes are really organized which is extremely helpful. Wants you to succeed. Go to class, do practice problems and exams she posts, and problem of the day questions. Material on exams come from the practice problems and HW
Frequently makes mistakes. Really nice and her tests are straight forward. What she teaches is exactly what u see on exams. BUT she is the most stingiest person when it comes to points. U can leave feeling like u got a 100 & really got a 68. She will fight u for a point that u deserve & make up a reason to not give it to u. Final was kinda hard. :(
What an amazing professor. Her lectures are very engaging; she always asks for feedback from the students. She goes above and beyond to help her students succeed; Dr. Pflum comes up with her own practice problems AND practice exams! The book is a good source for extra practice, but all you will need to know will come directly from the notes :)
It's Organic Chemistry, so yeah it's hard. Dr. Pflum helps make the material more relatable and has this whole "why should you care" bit at the end of each chapter that helps relate the subject mater to the real world. if you have to take orgo, take it with her.
Pflum is straight forward. Great professor and really enthusiastic about the subject, have a question ask her? Her exams aren't tricky with an exception to the final. But you must know your material, NEVER memorize in organic chemistry, master the content, it's not difficult just requires time. My first science A, so that should mean something.
Generally knows her stuff. Can be confusing at times. VERY enthusiastic (which can get annoying). In discussion, you do worksheets in groups or flashcards which isn't helpful at all when you get no answers and the TAs don't explain. Sometimes has flipped classes where you do that in lecture. Exams are okay. Does prepare you for orgo 2 though.
If I had to, I'd take Dr. Zibuck for orgo 1. Her exams are definitely harder this year, and her explanations are unclear. This turns orgo into a memorization class.
Goes way too fast. It's so easy to get lost. This class is hard as it is and she doesn't make it any easier.
I was avoiding orgo like the plague but once I took it with pflum I realized it wasn't so bad. She's still confusing at times but very enthusiastic! While I enjoyed her quirkiness, sometimes I just didn't understand how she got to a final product. Memorization helps but also learn why the mechanism works. DO HER PRACTICE! She wants u to pass & u can
She's really enthusiastic about organic chemistry. Her practice problems saved my grade. Redo them before the final to ace it.
I did manage to get an A with Dr. Plum, although I struggled a lot. Do her practice problems that she posts because her exam questions are very similar. If given the choice, take Dr. Zibuck. Zibuck teaches you organic chemistry, not how to memorize.
Worst Class! The questions she uses for exams were questions I had never seen in my life! I understood everything before her exams and I did the exams from previous years very easily but her exams get harder every year. If you end up taking her class, do the practice problems, redo problems of the day, do exams from previous years, and Pray a lot!
I LOVED THIS CLASS! Take her! Suprisingly Dr. Pflum made orgo fun. YES you do need to know of reactions and mechanisms for the exams, but Dr. Pflum makes everything clear. Discussion sections were annoying - you do worksheets on your own and TAs aren't helpful, but lecture was great. Make a list of the reactions alone as you learn them! HUGE HELP!!
She is a good instructor, although if given the choice, take Zibuck. Pflum is more about memorization than understanding the chemistry.
10/10 class, would take again
One of the best and most positive teachers; her study guides and practice problems narrowed down the material and prepared you for the exams; started posting short problem-solving videos which helped, along with Klein's 2nd language book; I have not used the textbook and I'm at 97% through her first 3 exams; no curveballs; definitely recommend!!
I am set to get an A so far- and to be real, Pflum gives you everything-old exams, new practice problems, book problems- and great lectures on why you should care about organic chemistry. She truly wants you to understand the mechanisms and not to memorize. Great prof, even more so in office hours. Loves red flagging important content.
First of all, organic chemistry is a very hard class, but Dr. Pflum did a great job providing us with all of the materials we needed to be successful. Lectures are not at all mandatory.
She concentrates on memorizing much more than understanding. Her midterms are easy, but the final was AWFUL. I still got an A because she curved.
Dr Pflum is incredible. She gives you every resource to succeed. It's not an essay class in general but, she makes it very very tangible to attain an A and to learn a lot in the process. Old exams and practice problems are key.
Honestly this was one of the easiest science classes I have taken at wayne state. orgo is a weeder class so it is intended to drop the 400 kids that want to do premed/dental/pharm etc. If you come to class, do practice problems, practice exams you will get an A. The final wasn't hard if you actually studied. WORK FOR THAT A it isn't just handed.
Dr. Pflum was a good professor in terms of teaching the material and providing her students with resources to do well on the exams. However, when it came to the exams, especially the final, she made them nearly impossible. She is also a nit picky grader and stands firm on unfair grading methods.
Professor Pflum is really nice and upbeat and her lectures were never too dull or dragging. However, she was a very tough test grader and does not give too much room for error in her class. The final exam led to huge drops in many people's grades as she put unnecessarily difficult questions on it. She's a nice person but a hard professor!
Dr. Pflum is one of the best professors I have ever had. Lectures never boring, gives practice problems and homework that will help a lot. If you practice, you will easily get an A. Little bit strict on tests but still a great great professor. highly recommend her.
Legit inspired me to actually like chem. She's a really good prof.
You might as well call this a hybrid class because not only do you have to learn material by going to class, you also have to learn material on your own by watching her videos.
not happy on how this year semester went I usually do not complain about professors. She is very nice and wants her students to succeed. The big problem is the amount of videos she wants us to watch out of class which normally isn't too big of a deal. But at times these videos are LONGER than the 50 minute lectures. I am on track for an A
She is an amazing professor. I really don't know why people are complaining of her online videos they were not that long and she only did it a few times. Id rather be given videos to help us study and do well on the exam, than being let on our own to figure out the material. You have to realize she has so much to go over in so little time.
Her videos are beneficial to us the students, she's taking time out of her day to make these videos to help us succeed. If you ask me she really does care about her students and theres not many professors at wayne that to. I would take her again if she taught orgo 2
Dr. Pflum Is very thorough during lectures and actually cares about her students success. She provides many resources and always has positive energy to help you do high quality work in regards to test taking. This was my second time taking her class. I did well because I practiced & spent time understanding the mechanisms rather than memorizing.
I love Dr. Pflum! Not only does she know her stuff extremely well but she is so caring to students who are not doing well in her class! You can always reach out to her if you need to! I fell in love with orgo because of her and I'm glad she was my orgo Prof. Her exams are decent if you pay attention in class and follow up with the homework! Def rec
Shes amazing. She truely cares for her students. Her lectures are to the point and helps you understand. Her videos arent that long each one is like 3-5 min and does videos sometimes. Just take the time to really practice the mechanisms because if you dont you will struggle!
Dr. Pflum is by far one of the best science professors I've ever had at Wayne! Her energy makes you pay attention to her lectures, she may move fast sometimes but she'll upload it immediately after. She provided us with SO many resources to prepare us for her exams & the content on the exams were always so fair. She made me enjoy orgo! Take Pflum!
Well the class she teaches itself isn't too bad. If you go to class you will be fine but the thing is your grade is pretty much based on how well you do on exams. I rated her super low because she basically ignores your emails and its really frustrating how theres always 1 exam question we never learned.
Dr. Pflum is the best professor I have had so far. Her lectures are very clear, gives plenty of resources, and takes time after class to make videos of things she did not have time to cover. You have to work hard in this class, but she's there to help. Really wish she taught orgo 2 next semester.
Love her she's so passionate
Orgo is a hard class but Dr. Pflum makes it bearable. So many different resources to prepare for exams. Exams are fair and not crazy hard, but you have to put in the work and do A LOT of practice problems. Most of your grade comes from tests with some online homework. Going or listening to lectures on echo center is a must for passing.
She's alright, she doesn't make learning Orgo easy. There are much better professors who can take the time to explain the subject matter. Pflum's test are easy compared to other professors, but she doesn't prepare you well. Use lots of outside resources to study (use the site Clutchprep - it's a huge help for this class!)
Dr. Pflum is one of the best lecturers I have ever witnessed. Grades are determined by the following: 3 lecture exams, 1 final exam, post and pre lecture quizzes, and a few other easily earned points. Pflum gives every student the opportunity to succeed by providing resources such as practice exams, in class examples, and practice problems.
"I don't have time to teach you this" something Pflum, who is getting paid to teach us would say if too many people asked the same question. Passionate about the class but that's it. Takes forever to answer emails and really all they say is that you can't learn if you don't put effort in.
Dr. Pflum is one of the best professors I've had at Wayne State! She actually cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Lectures and the videos she posts are helpful. She gives you a ton of study resources too. Tests and grading are fair. You have to put a lot of work in but you can definitely get a good grade in the class.
People exaggerate the difficulty of orgo. If you know how to make charts that explain the mechanisms, you should be fine with Pflum. Class has 100 HW pts, 300 mid semester exams, and a 200 pt final & 20 pt EC. Our final was not hard at all and had a lot of repeat Qs from our other exams. Practice problems are your best bet for an A
Dr. Pflum is one of the few professors at Wayne State who actually cares about her students and likes to see everybody succeed. Shes a great teacher and all the homework she assigns are actually very helpful. Her exams are quite fair if you study and know the mechanisms well. Take her!!!
I was very scared going into Orgo as Ive heard it's very difficult. However, Dr. Pflum's lectures were very thorough and she provided multiple examples for every type of reaction. She does them fast, but if you look at lecture notes and echo center orgo is very easy to understand. All it takes is practice! She gave us so many resources to study :)
I love her! She is so sweet and is always willing to give feedback. Her lectures were on point and she gave students all the resources to do good one exams.
She is just about the best professor you could have for a subject like Organic Chemistry. You still need to work hard for a good grade, but she will make it easier by giving good notes, homework, extra credit, practice exams, and old exams. She is kinda dorky about chemistry. Best professor I've had so far.
She gives you all the tools necessary for you to succeed (past exams, exam practice, study guides, etc). She was also very clear in her lectures on what was important to know for the exam. However, that does not mean you don't have to work hard for A, but if you are willing to put in the work you should have no problem doing well in her class.
Pflum is very passionate about orgo but she needs to teach higher levels or realize we don't go into orgo 1 knowing everything. She is not a fan of questions and gets upset when more than one student is not understanding the current topic. Breezes over everything fast.
I admit, I didn't get the best grade in orgo, but I can only confess that Dr. Pflum is one incredible professor. She CARES about her students' success, painstakingly teaches concepts for understanding, encourages participation and office hrs, gives a plethora of past exams. She's really shrewd, knows when third the class isn't there, she rly cares.
Best Orgo professor in Michigan. Hands down the best prof I have encountered at Wayne. Cares a whole lot about student's grades. If you utilize the study resources she provides for the exams, you will get an A.
HANDS DOWN BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY PROF
I absolutely love Dr. Pflum and I'm so appreciative of what a great professor she is, because I am learning so much. I actually UNDERSTAND the material, and I'm thoroughly enjoying taking the class. May sure you pay attention to the lectures/take notes, stay on track, and do LOTS of practice problems, and you will get an A.
Shes not a very friendly lady in office hours and I dont feel comftorable asking her questions BUT she is a great professor. The only thing I dislike is how fast she goes through the material in lecture. Her exams are easy, if you know how to do the problems she teaches in class, you will ace the exam. Barely studied for this class and ended well.
She is a great professor. She has study guides that prepare you for her exams, if you study them and practice problems throughly for a week in advance, you will get an A, or B on her exams. Gives out EC. People will tell you how hard orgo is, but with Pflum, it wasn't bad, considering the fact that I struggled with get chem. Take her for orgo.
Dr. Pflum is absolutely AMAZING!!! she goes the extra mile in order for her students to succeed. She posts awesome exams reviews and study guides as well as old finals to help you practice. The lectures and her course is very well organized. She provides an extra credit opportunity in the class. Exams arent bad and she is super helpful, I love her!
So let's be real, she is okay teaching wise but not the best, lots of time she say " that's how it is" " very werid mechanism" sometimes cant answer questions. I read the book for the class to get an A. She is ok with exams, but screwed class on the final. Made it 100x harder. I recommend her but you need your skills to learn. Not smart prof.
Dr. Pflum is by far the best professor to teach Organic Chemistry 1. Her lectures are very helpful, although, sometimes towards the end of the lecture, she rushes and goes a little fast, trust me, it's okay. When it comes to studying for her exams, use the chapter study guides, practice exams, and old lecture exams. She is the best orgo professor!
Dr. Pflum went out of her way to help me She can make the lectures so understandable a baby can get it I recommend looking at Khan academy and organic tutor and leah for sci to get a better grasp on the material the final exam was hard dont wait until the last minute to study and practice the material a little every day go to office hours do good
The best they have to offer at Wayne for the subject and it's not like that is much of an achievement.
Heres the pattern: as the material gets harder her exam questions also get harder and went beyond the very simple examples she explained in class. Flipped classes, exit and entrance tickets, 11 quizzes, discussions & 4 exams, no drops. Final replaces your lowest grade but its not always your best score. Shes a fun lady but I hated that pattern.
Trying to learn organic chemistry on your own is almost an impossible task to accomplish. Though, Professor Plfum made it her duty to make this goal achievable, her ability to convert major concepts (organic chemistry) into a form that is more user friendly is why I was able to accomplish this goal; hands down, the best orgo professor at Wayne.
Pflum is nice but the subject is just hard. She tried to make this semester doable but in the end you are teaching yourself and counting on peer mentors and TAs for guidance. Personally, the amount of hw was well needed to understand concepts and have wiggle room for grading after exams. She is a speedy lecturer so be prepare to learn in 2 mins.
Shes alright at teaching. She cares more for going over certain material within lecture time rather than making sure you understand it. She is not accessible whatsoever by email, which is quite a problem during the time we live now. As the semester goes on, and material gets harder, she proceeds to teach much, much faster. No curves are given.
A nice person, but not the best professor. She only teaches you half of what you need to know, and doesn't emphasize what's important for exams. You're mostly on your own, despite her efforts. She did not offer us the curves, exam corrections, or EC she did previous terms. So she kind of screwed us over. Not very understanding or lenient.
I feel like lectures previewed the material briefly, like we were constantly in a race, however Dr. Pflum did stay another hour or so after class answering questions if you were lucky enough to stay. Shes the coolest Orgo professor but for some reason she sped thru lectures towards the end of the semester and that was not fun. YouTube helped a lot
Her exams and overall grading are super fair, all her practice problems are very similar to what the actual exams are. She does give a lot of homework, but a ton of it gets dropped so I just did the minimum and received all the points. There's a ton of study sessions that help. Just watch her recordings and if needed watch youtube to clarify stuff.
I don't know what changed but every exam for the semester I had her was way harder than her practice exams. The sheer amount of entrance and exit tickets had me drowning in the work and barely any EC to be found.
EASY A! So easy I stopped showing up to live lectures the last 2 months of class & did not even go to the last 5 weeks of discussion. All you need to do is set emphasis on sterochem and regiochem and you will fly through this class. TRUST! She is also really generous with her exam style. Absolutely NO gotcha questions. DONT PASS HER UP AS A PROF!
Rarely responds to emails, but when she does she's very unpleasant and not any help. Her exams do not match the difficulty level that she employs in her lectures. There were 70 homework assignments throughout the 15 weeks and they were only worth 12 or so percent of your entire grade.
Dr. Plfum is honestly the best professor in Wayne State. I'm taking Orgo 2 with someone else now, and I realized that we took her for granted. She literally provides you with her own neat and thorough study guides, her own practice problems, an hour of Q&A after lecture, detailed email responses etc. I don't know what more ya'll want.
Dr. Pflum is extremely organized, and super sweet. There are a decent amount of assignments. The syllabus is super specific. She has entrance and exit tickets every class which are usually only a few OWL questions and they are super easy and great for extra points. Her due dates are very clear as well. I would love to have her for orgo 2
Really nice. Caring
Coming back after graduating to say that this is one of my best professors in my entire college experience. I've never learned as much in a class like I did for orgo 1. She was very organized and taught very well. Just don't get lost in the sauce and wait last minute to study for an exam. Also her energy was awesome!
