Mary is AMAZING!!! Take her class before she's gone!
Recommended!
The class is one of the easiest at Cal but you still learn a great deal. With Black Lightening, you basically don't need to attend a single class. Professor Kelsey is one of the nicest Professors around. Shes like your mother at college..but in a good way
YOU HAVE TO TAKE MARY'S CLASS!!!!! I learned so much, grading was easy, and I am confident enough to say that she will remain the best professor I have met in my years at Cal. She is so sweet, caring, and she actually knows your name!
good prof
Kelsey is indeed the best instructor/lecturer at CAL... i enjoyed her class and learned soooooooo much... She's always willing to help and is very approachable... best class and instructor at cal!
She is such a kind, friendly professor, very easy to approach.
She is one of the best professors I have ever taken at CAL! I love this professor! She knows your name and she is open to all your ideas! GO KELSEY!!!
Amazing and very caring. She knew my name and I only communicated with her to pick up my papers and a few e-mails. The only prof. that knew me by name at Cal.
Highly recommend! She is such a sweet person. She has a great personality. Her humor and personal stories make class interesting. She supports all of her students. I wish I could have a class with her again.
The sweetest person ever, she is really passionate about her students
Very nice and not very hard material.
took this class freshman year and now a senior.. she is prob one of the best teacher's i have had here.. i will never forget her warmth and caring attitude towards her students.. REALLY recommend this class to anyone! you'll never forget it!
great class! shes so nice =) and helpful, and the first quiz wasnt as nearly as bad as it could have been- simply go to class and read [not too hard, not boring subject matter] and you'll be fine. she REALLY cares about her students~ as strange as that is now adaysss.
Kelsey is so awesome. Her class is so interesting. She is so understanding. I love her and her class
Professor Kelsey is great, she is an extremely passionate Sociologist.
Kelsey is passionate about her subject, very dedicated to her students (sends out emails, posts lecture notes and reading outlines all the time), and her class is interesting (a lot of reading but never boring - relevant material, eye-opening). Overall a great class, good and enjoyable way to get AC done.
awesome professor! probably one of the nicest, most understanding woman i've ever met. super easy class.
The reviews are true! She's amazing, understanding, and remembers you. What's great is that if you do have genuine interest (and maybe even if you don't), read, and go to lecture, the class is incredibly easy. You learn so much, without being unnecessarily stressed out about it. She paces the class well. Take this class even if not a soc major!!
She's amazing. I feel I could have learned more in her class, but this class was the most intersting I had this semester. And its an easy A. Mary Kelsy is such a sweet person. You cant graduate from Berkeley and not take this class.
Kelsey is the most amazing woman at Berkeley. She has such passion for her class and her students. She really connects with the class and her stories are wonderful. Soc3AC with her is a must! Her class has changed my perceptions about life; she is undoubtably the best professor at Berkeley!
Prof. Kelsey is an amazing teacher. She is dedicated to her students and is passionate about what she teaches. The class is very easy and requires little studying. Papers are also graded easy. I recommend this class and Prof Kelsey!
I have taken 6 semester's of classes here so far and Mary Kelsey is the nicest professor I have had yet! Unfortunately she doesn't teach the class every semester but this is a must take class.
Best professor at Cal, hands down. She tried to learn everyone's name in a class of 250. She is very helpful during office hours and very concerned about her students.
Kelsey is a great teacher. I do not always agree with her views or those that sociology tries to impose on me, but she does her job well. She is very kind and will go out of her way to help her students. She is very lenient with grades and is just an awesome person. If you don't take her class, then be sure to try to meet her before you leave Cal.
Professor Kelsey is an amazing professor! Her class was always intresting! She is very organized and always passes out lecture notes and study guides. She does her best to help her students in any way she can. I recommend her class to everyone!
Professor Kelsey is an amazing, charismatic and highly intelligent professor. I wrote my honors thesis with her guidance and it was one of my best experiences at UC Berkeley. She is incrediably caring, kind and devoted instructor. I highly recommend taking any class that she is teaching!
She's awesome! She's the professor that makes you want to visit her after the semester's over. She's so passionate about Sociology and she is very helpful outside of class. She's a wonderful, engaging lecturer.
This woman is the most caring individual I've ever met at Cal. She goes out of her way to help her students in any and every way possible! I remember she held extra office hours and actually stayed a few hours AFTER that just to get to everyone that came to her OH. She's wonderful and understands you as a person.
She was the best professor I had at Cal and this class changed my life. Not only the materials covered in this class is interesting but also her genuine devotion to her students helped me to understand others whom I never realized before. I strongly recommend Prof. Kelsey to everyone at Cal.
Easy to the point that it becomes boring and repetitive. Readings not necessary, lecture either - she emails everything you need to know for quizzes and papers.
Yes, Kelsey does make the class easy by sending out lecture outlines and notes, but going to her lectures are worth it. She is the most enthusiastic and caring professor I have had here. She will go above and beyond to help you and get to know you. She teaches for us and any class with her is worthwhile.
An extremely good professor who likes to teach. You will learn a lot from this class. I urge you to try this class at least once. Kelsey knew my name really quickly and she cares about all her students. Probably one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life.
As most other reviews have stated, amazing professor, interesting/life changing material. I highly recommend taking a class with Professor Kelsey before you leave Cal.
Really really nice, and trust me she makes it EASY for you to get an A by easy grading, easy tests (mc, and everything on the study guide). I think she said the first day jokingly that she wants to "add to grade inflation of students". So yes, definitely take this class if you want to fulfill your AC credit or are interested in sociology. :)
Amazing professor. She is very nice and helpful. Her grading is very fair as well!
Professor Kelsey is one of the best professors I've had at Cal. She is the sweetest, nicest woman ever! Her quizzes are extremely EASY. You can easily get an A in this class, without even taking the fourth quiz. The readings are a lot, but there are PLENTY of extra credit points that you can get, max 40! She is the Best! Gives Hugs too!beyondsweet!
It's amazing how personal she can make a class of 200+ feel. She is really good at breaking things down.
Being "super-nice" is great, but I prefer my professors to be... professor-like. Hardest thing about this class is mustering up the willpower to go. And if you do go, having the willpower to actually listen to the "lecture." Readings are fun, but she presses her own political view too much. Dumb clas, very disappointed, ridiculously easy.
Best class at Berkeley. Great Prof., easy, dont have to read. No need to go to class cause she offers quizes at the end of the semester for make ups. Papers are basic. Overall great class.
Easiest class I've had here. She sends out lecture notes that summarize the readings and then spends all of class reading the lecture notes. I actually stopped reading because then lecture was moderately interesting. She was really helpful in office hours and even read my midterm paper personally. Nice lady, boring class.
I love Mary Kelsey and her Sociology of Family course. She was so delightful. Class was a little slow sometimes but the subject matter and assigned readings were fabulous. I'd highly recommend taking a course with her.
One of Cal's better professors. She is kind and has a genuine desire to teach students the material. She doesn't make things unnecessarily difficult like some professors. The work is reasonable and buying the reader isn't necessary if you listen in lecture. I would rec her if you need a chill elective.
Really easy class with lots of extra credit opportunities. Her lectures are just simplifications of the reading, so the only reason to go is because she takes attendance when the lecture hall looks too empty. She is so confident that her point of view is correct that she doesn't consider or discuss in class opposing views.
Super easy class although you need to work hard for papers. The class is quite boring but prof is friendly and helpful.
Class was fairly easy. You have 5 quizzes, but they're online, open-book, and multiple choice, so it was really easy. You have to work hard for the essays because they're graded by readers, who can be tough, but she offers extra credit so that helps. She's such a sweet person, and she talks about her goddaughter a lot!
best class i've taken at berkeley. i found the material incredibly interesting and she was a GREAT teacher. take the class to fulfill your AC requirement
Not only easy, but super interesting. I came out of the class with an understanding that will stick with me for the rest of my life. She's a really sweet professor and genuinely cares about her students. She gave me a hug on the last day of class! Extra credit helped me get an A+
SHE'S COOL, BUT TAKE THE SLC STUDY GROUP. IT CUTS DOWN A LOT OF WORK AND THEY HELP YOU WITH THE QUIZES. SLC STUDY GROUP IS THE REASON I GOT AN A
Very easy class, in my opinion. There are a few online quizzes every few weeks but you can take them twice and it's open notes. She's interesting, I guess, but the class is mostly freshmen and athletes. It seemed like a lot of students didn't care about the class so it turned out to be pretty easy. Got a solid A.
Easy A class. We had a 1 MT & 1 Final essay. Those were the majority of your grade so make sure to get some help from your GSI (who grades your paper) along with other resources. Also given tests online, but the lecture slides don't help a ton. Go to the study class session or be friends with someone in it.
Best Class i've ever taken! Interesting material and the professor is just great. She is very nice and she will be glad to talk to you and assist you on anything needed. I wish she would teach other classes. You must take one of her awesome classes
She's nice but very clearly one-sided in the information she teaches. Do not take if you want to open your mind to various societal issues. She's going to tell you exactly how you need to think. If you disagree, you won't do well.
Take home pop-quizzes. best 4 chosen. 2 take home midterm essays. One final project. And attendance counts. Pay attention to lectures and you can just skim the readings. No final. Easy A if you do the work and pay attention. most importantly, show up to class.
Best professor I've had at Berkeley so far. If you can take her class, would definitely recommend it.
Professor Kelsey's lectures can become a little disorganized because she likes to go off on tangents about things and she often skips through lecture slides quickly (too quickly for anyone to write down anything). Also, her quizzes that she gives at the end of every unit are often worded in a strange fashion. But there's no in-class final! :)
There was no discussion for this class, so she used iClickers for participation, definitely go if you can and email her in advance if you can't so you don't get knocked down participation! 3 Essays, online quizzes open book and take twice (very easy), do the readings and youll be set for class. Puts up powerpoints-if you miss the slides no worries
Super engaging and kind professor. Would definitely recommend! Also, an easy A in my opinion. Definitely recommend joining a study group offered through the SCL since there is no discussion sections.
Besides her long strings of "Yo Momma" jokes, extensive tangents revolving around her family, and intolerance for opinions opposing her own, Professor Kelsey is hilarious and her Soc class is a relatively easy A.
Mary Kelsey is a really great professor. Her lectures are interactive. She grades participation with iclicker. Her slides are detailed and a great resource for the midterm and final paper. Mini-online quizzes throughout . Her graders are great and she has very reasonable expectations for your papers. She also very approachable.
Few people demonstrate equal passion and dedication to their subject and students like Prof. Kelsey. Mary is an amazing lecturer and inspires students of all backgrounds to expand their sociological perspective. She is a forgiving grader because she knows that a profound understanding of sociology is far more important than grading technicalities.
Kelsey is a passionate and engaging professor. The class is generally interesting, and she focuses on making sure everyone understands the underlying ideas rather than having us memorize facts. Grading is mainly based on a couple papers and short quizzes. Her slides are also very detailed, which makes studying easier. Great choice for an AC class!
Her own words: this class was intended for freshman, overall an easy A. Essays have to do with gender, race, and experience. If you ask her specifically what she is looking for, it is very easy to pass. Iclickers are used for participation+ attendance. She gives extra credit for students who are failing. Amazing lectures, overall amazing professor
Professor Kelsey is a great teacher and an extremely caring person. I thought this class was extremely relevant and informative and I would definitely recommend the class for anyone looking to take a Soc class or to fulfill there AC requirement.
Didn't like her style of teaching and the fact that you had to agree with her opinions at all times. The essay was more of "explain what the prof wants you to explain" than actually testing out interesting sociological principles. Sorry, but this class made me hate sociology with a passion.
Kelsey is extremely understanding and passionate about the subject. She gives extensions when students ask for it and is always happy to answer any questions/discuss anything! Pretty easy class, essays were graded generously and quizzes weren't too bad.
I am a senior at Berkeley, and she's honestly the best professor I've had in my time here. She is very interactive and accessible, she speaks to her students as friends rather than inferior to her. Additionally, her class is very interesting, doable, and easy to pass. She also didn't hesitate to write me a letter of recommendation!
She's an incredibly kind and sweet professor, but her style of teaching and the content of this course is really not worth the hype. She's pretty understanding to student needs, but she is quite disorganized with her lecture content and often goes on tangents. I really like her as a person, but not so much as a lecturer
Super nice and caring professor! Shes so passionate about the class and her lectures are amazing! SUCH AN UNDERSTANDING PROFESSOR! Responds to email quickly and are always willing to help her students! Her class consist of 2 mid term papers, 1 final paper, discussion posts, and 4 online quizzes!
Honestly you could take this class, rarely pay attention in class, write decent essays, and get a decent grade (or pass at the very, very least). Kelsey is very accommodating. You just need to reach out and let her know what you need. Easy A in my opinion.
Amazing professor. You dont have to show up to the lectures to pass, but I went to every lecture because I genuinely enjoyed every second. I now feel educated about society and feel as though I understand how the inequalities have gotten to where they are today and some of the things we need to do to fix them. She loves to teach and shes so kind.
such a sweet kind professor who really cares about the class. also so knowledgable and great class!!!! I learned SO much and thought the format was interactive (papers, quizzes, no tests) and rewarding at the same time. Gave so much prep for midterm/final papers and really wants students to succeed. amazing AC class
Lectures were very thought-provoking and she genuinely cares for her students. Easy open note quizzes to boost your grade, but I'd beware of her papers; her essay readers are a bit on the unforgiving side and give scrutinizing comments. But overall a fantastic course to take if you're willing to put effort into writing and reading articles!
Awesome lectures, caring, supportive, wants everyone to succeed. Course was unexpectedly difficult & stressful for me as the first 2 essays were graded harshly (by readers, not the professor) despite my best attempts at following the rubric. I needed this class, but if you don't, I'd avoid it or take it P/NP, especially if you don't love essays.
Prof. Kelsey just wants you to succeed. She's so caring and will make accommodations for you for whatever reason. The material was also really great, and besides harsh reader grading, I'm really happy with my work in this course. She is a true gem. You should take this class!
She is such a great professor and was super accommodating during the pandemic. She really cares about her students and wants to see everyone learn and pass with out being uber stressed. 11/10 recommend.
She's a good professor, is understanding, fair & knows the material. Has a lot of white lib takes, was expecting more left-leaning understandings from a SOC teacher. If you're looking for more nuance, take transnational GWS. Going to class is helpful because she goes over the reading material. But you don't have to, she posts the slides.
I love Professor Kelsey! She has super interesting & engaging lectures which are recorded to provide a synchronous and asynchronous learning option. The quizzes are MCQ online and super easy if you take thorough lecture notes. There are only 2 midterm papers which are graded easily if you follow the sample files. You don't need to do any readings!
Wow. Professor Kelsey was easily the best professor I have ever had. She inspired me to see the world around me in a different life and want me to be the best person I can be. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about her course and we would often talk in office hours or after lecture. Take this course, it was the best.
As a pure STEM major student, I absolutely enjoyed this class, and the majority credit goes to Prof. Kelsey, who is extremely good at lecturing unfamiliar concepts to layman like me. It makes me to look at the world from a completely unique perspective. I would reccommend everyone take it. No need to read readings, but better to attend every class!
Kelsey was a great professor and I loved her class. For some people what's discussed in the class will feel common sense and not super surprising with issues in the world. But it is an interesting and easy class that is a nice introduction to what sociology is. If you pay attention in lecture it should not be too hard to write essays or do quizzes.
Kelsey was great. She's super sweet and her lectures were always interesting and informative. She gives plenty of time to do the assignments and the readings are pretty interesting. There were 5 quizzes, with the lowest score dropped, 2 midterm essays, and a research paper. I would definitely recommend this class! You learn a lot about the world.
Lectures were both engaging and informative. Even if you're a stem student who isn't super interested in sociology her lectures are still interesting and she's very charismatic. You don't have to do the readings if you go to class; the lectures cover all the material you need and the tests and papers are generally pretty easy.
The topics Prof. Kelsey covers is very relevant, and I can tell she really cares about what she taches, as she gets emotional at times. Also, she explains the content in a way that is easy to understand.
Professor Kelsey was truly one of my favorite professors at Cal. She wholeheartedly cares for her students and is very flexible with our needs. Her content is very inspiring and she talks about many current issues that need to be addressed more often! She inspired me and I would absolutely take a class with her again. Workload very reasonable too.
The sweetest Professor ever, she even brought us candy! Participation was graded via clickers, papers were fun to write and grading criteria was super clear. Would take more of her courses if I could!
I LOVED THIS PROF and was so honored to be the last SOC3AC class she taught, truly an amazing prof!! I wish I talked to her more 1 on 1 because she is really so sweet! THANK YOU SO MUCH PROF
She was super nice, very understanding, and her lectures were really interesting. There was quite a bit of reading, but you could just skim it before lecture and then revisit it on your own time to get more in depth. All Assignments were very straight forward and very engaging.
Prof Kelsey is genuine, sincere, and very knowledgeable. This class has 5 quizzes (lowest dropped), 3 midterm papers (given lots of resources), and the final project. No final exam! Go to office hours and she will know you on a first name basis.Pretty lecture heavy and all the quiz answers can be found on slides. Highly recommend her! TAKE :)
great caring professor! grading is relatively easy if you try
I love her so much! she is so down to earth and really there to help you. She is passionate about her class and is easy to communicate with. the work is str8 forward and easy enough, no midterm or final exam! info for quizzes is all on slides, but honestly if you go and listen, you will get 100%.she excuses absences if you ask and helps with thesis
Prof Kelsey is one of the best professors I've had throughout my 4 years at Cal. Knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely cares about the students. The reading is substantial but organized and outlined in a cogent manner. We wrote 3 papers this semester and were provided supporting resources to help with writing and organizing the papers.
had an amazing class! as a freshman, i learned super interesting topics and papers/midterms/final we were given so many resources/examples to write our paper and what to write on. lenient/easy grading if you put in effort. super caring and kind prof. def one of my easier classes
You have to show up to class to get credit for attendence. She is great at getting back to you with emails and is accessible outside class. You can tell she is very knowledgeable in what she teaches and does care about her students, she is super approachable.
Professor Kelsey is without a doubt the best teacher I have at Berkeley so far. Her lectures are super interesting and engaging. She is extremely thoughtful and caring and makes an effort to know each and every student. Do everything you can to have her, she's amazing!!!
Very kind professor! Going to her lectures and OH, you see her passion for her field and just how much she cares for students. Very understanding when it comes to deadlines and while there are iclickers for lecs, she values communication above everything and will excuse your absence if you email your reason. Hands down among the best profs at Cal!
Professor Kelsey is such a joy and I wish I could take a few more of her courses. She is very caring and passionate. She truly cares about her students. I recommend her course 100 percent.
Great Professor! The lectures were so interesting and is making me consider switching majors! She gave extensions to the whole class if enough people asked. No final exam just a research paper and 4 online take-home quizzes. She's fun and plays music videos before class
Sweetest professor I have met and everyone I know who took her class agrees. Will email you back very fast and is very understanding concerning deadlines extension or missing classes. Classes are mandatory and she uses IClicker. Will take time to answer questions after class if needed. Extra credit are available and not hard. Will curve.
Professor Kelsey is amazing - she's super knowledgeable and passionate. The workload is manageable, and unstuck ai was a game-changer for my study prep. Highly recommend this class!
