a cool teacher who doesnt forget what it was like to be in college.
Easy but a bit of an airhead
easy class, crappy exams, she's a space cadet
Great easy class where you watch videos alot and don't really learn much
No Comments
she was really nice and the class was laid back, but her tests were BAD!
Don't bother buying the book! Its all out of the notes. Easy class.
Very unprofessional. Does not trust students.
No trust, yells at class for talking/getting up even if we aren't
Easygoing - lots of notes. Breaks her mic a lot- sit close
eh..she's okay, classes are pointless you dont learn anything useful, exams.bad
Space cadet. She's pretty nice and lectures are cool. But tests are a beast.
Makes herself totally unaccessible to students, bad tests, nowhere close to Geog
lots of note taking, tests aren't to bad, shes funny, overall good class
No Comments
Class is boring, no geography involved.Tests aren't bad.If need help, good luck.
DONT buy the book everything comes from the notes, sit close the mic breaks!
Nice, but not helpful, and things are confusing!

class isn't very hard, not too boring, she's pretty easy going
Class is easy w/ plenty of gimme points, just DONT buy the book
nice woman, weird sometimes. Dont buy the book and get a friend to sign you in!
good class, can be a touch bit flighty, but its alright
nice woman, study ur notes, dont by the book
more interested in social causes she cares about then teaching geography
Love her
for cultural geog: so nice, don't but the book, study your notes, get to know her a bit, caring prof, somewhat ditzy
Whatever you do, don't waste your time cracking the book open, it will do you no good on the tests, which can be kind of hard but are entirely from class notes. A nice teacher.
First test was rediculous, isn't helpful at all, better luck with osmosis than trying to get help from her
similar to 200, not too hard, she's not too organized, just take notes and watch videos
It's a good class, she kind of talks down to the class a little but she means well. Can get by without the book! Save $100 bucks!
Class is a waste of time unless you like the Kogi Indians, prof sucks
A nice person, but doesn't have her act together as a professor.
...She loves Kogi Indians..has no clue how many languages are spoken in the world..confuses Russians & Polish.can't pronounce theater(makes multiple choice 5 pts per question, but ofcourse filing in blanks & essays only a 1 pt each, does that make sense
nice lady, easy class, weekly quizzes on maps, didnt have to do much
Do not buy book. Rather scatterbrained teaching style. A little disorganized. Wide breadth of info learned, but not in depth.
She did her best. Class is easy. More of a general geography class than a regional course. You learn a lot by doing independent research. Weekly quizzes are a joke, easy As. Midterm and Final were easy. Lectures were decent, nothing too boring.
do not take
Very nice and really laid back. A little random but she is really helpful and understanding. If you like geography I think the class is very interesting. If you have any problems just talk to her.
go to this class high and get A's
Focuses too much on Central America and doesn't really know what she's talking about when it comes to some topics. Overall shes easy though so take if you don't mind some scatter brained teaching.
You DO NOT need the books except the atlas. I didn't listen to that advice and wasted $150. She's very unorganized, a little rude, and OBSESSED WITH HAITI. Easy class, but I almost cry from boredom in her class.
CRAZY unorganized
she is very up in the air, not clear ever and the tests are very confusing and contain nothing covered in class
This woman is a nut, who doesn't know what she is talking about. It is hard to study for the tests, because she is so vague on what the exams are going to cover. There are weekly map quizes, which are always very easy.
This woman is up in the air on everything. Very caring, but just straight unorganized. Her tests wouldn't be so bad if multiple choice questions weren't worth 6 pts. a piece. Nice lady, just be prepared to get pissed at her disorganization.
It's not a terrible class, but it's nothing special. She's pretty passionate about what she teaches, but as other people have said...you never know what exactly to expect on some tests. Not as straightforward as I would have liked.
This woman is absolutely crazy. She is consistently late for class, completely disorganized, and altogether unrealistic about college students. She should be teaching kindergarten. RUN, don't walk, away from this class!!!
good teacher
After graduation I looked back on the four years spent at JMU, and could only conclude that this was the worst class that I had taken. She was unorganized, had poor teaching skills and was completely non-inspiring. Easy A, but bring a pillow. Good Luck!
The work isn't hard but she isn't clear at all about what she wants. She doesn't care if you turn assignments in late. Takes forever to grade and return assignments. Tests have the most random questions and are hard to study for. Not very helpful because shes so disorganized.
Great teacher. She is inspiring and caring with her students. She is so involved in JMU that she knows everyone and does everything, which helps to get students involved as well.
the material is easy and the class is almost all power point making it easy to follow. kimsey can be a little scatter brain at times but she's very nice and makes the class enjoyable to attend.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She has NO CLUE what her grading is going to be like until she does it, and then she wont explain it to you, she'll just make up an excuse for what you got. You aren't graded based on your performance, but in comparison to others, its total BS.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. She has no idea what she's talking about most of the time and makes up the course as she goes along. I've sadly taken multiple courses with this teacher and she is the same for every class. You think the course is easy but then all of a sudden she'll give you a massive project that she wont even explain. Her classes SUCK
Dr. Kimsey is a really kind lady! She's very friendly, and a great person who genuinely cares about her students and what she teaches. The class isn't all that informative, but its still worth taking. A midterm, a final, weekly online quizzes, and a couple other small assignments make up your grade. Not a very hard class.
Avoid taking GEOG200 with her! All she does is talk about her vacations and the problems in third world countries, which have almost nothing to do with the quizzes and tests. Everything I have learned has been outside of class.
AVOID. going to class doesnt help at all but there is an attendance policy. weekly quizzes are so hard and dont make any sense, you read one chapter a week and go to her lectures and i have NO IDEA where she gets her quiz questions. no guidance on how to study for midterm and final. HORRIBLE TEACHER. very nice lady.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! Her assignments have no clear objectives. She only lays them out literally when she starts grading. AVOID! Nice lady but HORRIBLE Professor! Useless readings and quizzes not pertinent to the topic at hand. Also her topics are very discursive!
Weekly online quizzes so reading the book beforehand really helps. Shared interesting stories from the news before every lecture and tries to engage the class in discussions. Gives you a general world view, hits the class objectives successfully. Midterm and final, each has concept questions, map identification, and an essay you turn in beforehand.
GET READY TO WORK, especially in the summer. Online class so what would normally take one week in the fall is condensed into ONE DAY. Daily reading is 45-60 pages plus 2-3 PowerPoints, sometimes online videos (45 min-1 hr). Must complete reading to succeed on daily quizzes (map quizzes, lecture quizzes). Everything is busy work. Be READY.
For someone who teaches a class on culture and awareness of the world, she is very ignorant and unaware of general global issues. I don't feel like I've learned anything substantial from her class. Although it's a really easy course, would not recommend just based on lack of understanding the world.
I LOVE DR. KIMSEY! She's such a gem. She's very knowledgable on the topic and wants to introduce current issues to help you understand the content of the class. Overall, great lady! Midterm and final, 1 reading and 1 map quiz a week. Overall easy A if you engage yourself in the lecture and read 1 chapter a week.
I'm not sure why so many people hate on Dr. Kimsey, she's a very sweet lady who cares a lot about her students. Not a hard class, but interesting material that is applicable to current events, which she always brings into class. Cant wait to take another class with her.
Okay, this class is cake if you do your work. Pretty much all you have to do is show up and complete everything. Tests are pretty straightforward and she does a review session. Your total grade is out of 1000 but there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit so getting a solid A should not be difficult. Weekly online quizzes also...
She is a very nice lady but a terrible teacher. Her power points are pointless and they don't really explain anything. She doesn't explain the content also, making the class extremely boring. She makes study guides but they have up to 300 terms and statistics you need to know. So get ready to study your ass off.
Power-points are posted online after each class and the weekly quizzes were good practice for the exams. If you show up to class and pay attention, you will get a good grade. Kimsey is well-traveled, very kind and understanding towards her students, and acknowledges that we have other classes and exams. She definitely cares and enjoys her job :)
Dr. Kimsey was a super sweet, nice old lady who really cared about her students; a little unorganized at times and tended to teach off topic, but super flexible/cooperative with assignments- she has a lot of experience in her field and just loves talking about her travels- pay attention to small details in pwrpts and do the readings for good grade
She's really nice and will talk to the class to determine if more time is needed for assignments. There's a ton of homework, and she has to fly through slides to discuss them all. A lot of the small details from class are on the tests. There's a long semester project due that she doesn't really discuss, but her class was really interesting.
I believe there were two tests, and one big paper at the end. She is so nice and pretty lenient with grading and late work.
Professor Kimsey is a solid choice for Geography 200. She is very lenient and understanding that her students have other classes that are probably harder/more time consuming than her gen ed. Weekly map and reading quizzes, but the only test all semester is the final.
very nice person. easy class, map and regional quizzes every week but are easy if you read the powerpoints she posts online. final exam pretty easy and she's very helpful and understanding.
online quizzes every week that can be retaken 5 times, lowest grades dropped, very low expectations as to our knowledge of class topics. no required textbook and i never bought the atlas we were supposed to have.
The most disorganized teacher I've ever had. She wings lectures and will give out homework assignments a day before its due. She's kind and cares, but as a teacher she makes me wanna pull my hair out. Passing the class isn't hard but she makes things pretty frustrating. She's a terrible grader which is why its not exactly an easy A class.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Extremely disorganized and lectures are a joke. Half the time she doesn't grade stuff, she'll just pass it back and tell you to check answers with classmates as if yall have the answer key. Weirdest grader, will take points off for irrelevant stuff instead of grading on content. Lots of textbook reading and busy work.
Dr. Kimsey is one of the best at JMU! Weekly quizzes that aren't worth much (and I think one got dropped) and the final exam is the EXACT SAME as the regional review sheets so study those and you'll definitely get over a 100% with extra credit. She does take "attendance" by signing a sheet at the end of a class.
Mary Kimsey is such an amazing professor! Take her if you need to take GEOG. Two quizzes a week. One is a map quiz and one is on the PowerPoints and short videos. Her class is so interesting and super easy to get an A in if you put the work in!
literally a sweet lady, class was online but each week was the same routine: worksheet, read over some powerpoints, fill out a map, and take the quizzes. easy A for a gen ed
Dr. Kimsey is such a sweet lady and her class is so easy with the same weekly routine (one assignment, fill out maps, take 2 quizzes on the map and readings). If you need to take a Gen Ed in this cluster, definitely recommend her.
I'm not sure why her rating is so low bc I thought she was an amazing professor. If you are willing to do her work which really isn't hard then you can easily land up with an A in her class. Her lectures are super interesting and she includes current issues. Her assignments are manageable & quizzes are based off lectures; no exams except for final.
Kimsey is an amazing professor. She is super organized and gives you your work on Mondays and everything is due Sunday. Quizzes each week on each region, not hard. She cares about her students and is passionate about the world. Easy get ed and highly recommend.
Kimsey was amazing during the pandemic. Our work was easy and consistent; all you have to do is make sure you have the atlas and review the powerpoints. If you need an easy gen-ed, this is ABSOLUTELY what you should take. I genuinely feel like I learned information. She was super nice and always made sure we were taking care of ourselves bc COVID
I don't know how her rating isn't higher. Every week there is a new region, with worksheets due Wednesday's, and two quizzes due Sunday's. The only exam is the final, and we were allowed to use our study guide. It had the exact same questions on the test. I've spoken to her twice and she's really nice and is passionate about her class. TAKE IT!
Weekly worksheets had a lot of material, but class was genuinely enjoyable. Learned a lot I could actually use in life. Class was entirely on zoom and sometimes she'd call on you, but if you don't answer, she'll move on and you won't lose participation points. Semester project on natural disaster - work alone or with partner. Would recommend her!!
Dr. Kimsey is the best. She really cares for her students and always gives you the benefit of the doubt. She is usually on top of everything and is genuinely the sweetest person. She assigns map quizzes every week along with quizzes on what you reviewed the week prior but allows you to use your notes and other postings to assist you.
Kimsey is one of two of my fav professors so far. There are weekly map and overview quizzes (taken online ) that are pretty easy if you just pay attention. Attendance is pretty important to her. Cheap textbooks required. The midterm was word-for-word the same as the review we did in class for it. Super interesting class taught by an awesome prof.
She's really nice and her class is really easy. She cares about the topic but understands that not everyone there does. She also assigns you a group that you work with the entire semester which is nice.
Put in some effort and you'll be ok. You need to memorize the countries of the world which is probably harder for many than it was for me. She has very bad lectures, she constantly forgets what she put on her own PowerPoints & trips over her words many times in one slide. However she grades fair & gives a consistent weekly routine, work isn't awful
Love her. If you go to class and pay attention u will be fine. Weekly map quizzes as well as a quiz on the lecture from that week, which are pretty easy. She reviewed with us for the midterm and basically gave us the whole test. Her lectures can be boring sometimes, but its an easy A.
Dr. Kinsey is one of my favorite professors of this semester. She has a real passion for the topics and you can tell. Very easy to get a good grade: weekly online quizzes (all answers in pwp), group worksheets in class, and two exams (midterm was online). A few extra credit opportunities too! All around great class and professor.
KIMSEY IS THE BEST! She gives you a study guide of exactly what to expect on the test so you can get an A! She cares a lot about her students as well! Definitely take her class!
Kimseys class is like a 5/10. You can only miss 4 classes before she drops you a letter grade. The PowerPoints she goes over in class she uploads to canvas so you dont really need to go to class to pass the quizzes. All of her quizzes are also online and due by Sunday or Monday night. Its hard to get in contact with her after class too.
Professor Kimsey was always so sweet and understanding of what the students needed. She also was so passionate in her lectures, which made her lectures more intriguing to listen to. Her study guides usually mimic her tests, so pretty easy if you pay attention in class and at least skim the textbook pages. Overall, would recommend her class.
If I could give her 6 stars I would. She is honestly super interesting and engaging, I enjoyed going to class. Attendance is mandatory and her weekly quizzes are heavily based on powerpoints, lectures, and readings. Pay attention in class, take notes, and study directly from PowerPoints and you'll be fine.
Very easy class to get an A in. Just do the work and you will be fine.
I love this woman. Her lectures are pretty straight forward and so are exams. If you complete your work you should find this class pretty easy. She talks during the majority of class, but she is very interactive so it's not boring. You get into groups in the beginning of the semester and work together quite often.
She is just awesome. I won't lie, I didn't like her at first, one of those professors that doesn't allow laptops. As the year progressed though, she just became great. A super interesting and caring person, not to mention very accommodating and approachable. Class itself was very easy and the final was ONLINE OUTSIDE OF CLASS. Take her!
The class itself is fine, and she gives enough resources to do ok. But, you need to do too much of catch-up outside of class, because she doesn't finish her lectures, or goes too quickly to take notes (or BOTH). Her favorite phrase is "you all can look at that later." She says some of us don't know cursive so we can't take notes fast enough.
Kimsey was a little all over the place. Her instructions were very vague, and her lectures were a waste of time. Her quizzes and tests weren't hard, but this class is just dumb. She rambles about random stuff and we can't even get to the content that will be on the tests and quizzes. She's a nice woman, just not a great professor.
She is an extremely nice person but her lectures are so boring and you cannot take notes fast enough to keep up with her. The quizzes are so ultra specific on all of the content it takes an insane amount of time to study for them. She gets political often, most of the time she doesn't know what she's talking about so it is frustrating and off topic
She's so sweet! She goes way too fast in class and doesn't allow laptops for notes. She posts the powerpoints so you can easily catch up. All tests and quizzes are online outside of class and are straight from the reading and powerpoints. Love her!
While she's somewhat disorganized Dr Kimsey is super sweet. Lots of grades go into the gradebook making it not too bad if you bomb one quiz (she drops the lowest one). She's really flexible if you talk with her about certain things one example being our exam which she let us take online. Some classes were pointless but overall not bad.
Dr. Kimsen was great the whole semester. She had to teach a big class yet she still made an effort to reach out to me. If you sit in the front of the lecture hall you have a better connection with her yet she is very approachable. Many people did well in her class and if you do the work you shouldn't get lower than a b. Her test is the study guide.
She is the sweetest person the class was just very boring and felt pointless being mandatory. 2 online tests, weekly quizzes which aren't that bad, and one major group project that goes throughout the semester. Wasn't an awful class. Graded on multiple things so it's easy to do well.
Dr. Kimsey is a sweet woman, but it got political often. Couldn't take notes fast enough ever. The work was more than my anatomy class! attendance was required. group project grading had unclear grading criteria. it ended up not being a class ab where countries are but instead abortion, plastic, pollution, and energy. She is caring though and kind.
Super sweet! However, she is a little bit of a nut lol. Very kind and understanding and drops a bunch of grades. All tests were online and pretty easy. Class content is pretty interesting, but lectures can be boring. I would recommend for an easy gen ed.
Dr. Kimsey's class is very disorganized but pretty easy. You can miss a few assignments but only the midterm, final, and final project actually matter though. Her lectures are 40 minutes of her rambling about whatever and then speeding through 80 slides in 10 minutes. Wouldn't take if you are a GEOG major, but definitely if you want gen ed credit.
I loved this class because Dr. Kimsey was so so sweet and she slid in funny jokes that made the class laugh. The lectures are interesting and current, and the quizzes are fine if you do the reading guide along with the reading.
Dr. Kimsey is very sweet and a gentle soul. Class seems very disorganized but it's really not too hard if you pay attention during lecture, you'll often get out of class early. She can be very funny during lectures if you catch the jokes she slides in. Not too many assignments.
I liked the class and the material but beware that you do group work and you don't get to pick your group which is really unfortunate. Dr Kimsey is very kind and will work with you if you need help with anything. Just make sure that she gets to know you as a student! Very test heavy but they're easy to pass if you just look at the notes.
Kimsey is an all right professor. I have had much better professors in the class. She gives a lot of small assignments to bring up your grade and I have the class on T and TH and she always lets us out early. Geog200 with Kimsey is an easy-ish gened so take it if you have the chance. My biggest critique is she isn't very forgiving on missed work
Dr Kimsey is good if you want an easy A GenEd. Just be wary of the excessive amount of quizzes, ever-changing assignments/syllabus, no electronics, no late grades, and scatterbrained lectures. The course is not engaging and most of the assignments feel pointless. She rambles her way through boring, messy lectures but we usually got out early.
Her lectures are unorganized and they're impossible to follow. She mispronounces random words, sometimes different from sentence to sentence. Showing up to lecture wouldn't be worth it if it wasn't for mandatory attendance. Her group work system is terrible. I would recommend avoiding taking her, but if you do its not very hard.
Easy class especially if you are already familiar with topics like climate change, pollution, biology, environmental sciences, and geography. She has a little bit of a temper but is usually a nice person and caring. Not the best lecturer but understands that the lectures are boring and will often end early. Tests are similar to reviews. Recommend
I would not recommend this class. Honestly, it was more of a social justice class than a geography class where Dr. Kimsey would talk about her personal political opinions in class. Her teaching style is all over the place and very rude when trying to communicate your concerns.
Dr. Kimsey is very understanding of her students' work habits since she works like us at times as well, so it is nice that she is receptive to our feedback. She is a nice professor that tries to incorporate as many real experiences as possible. With her projects, she tends to change them a lot last minute, so that can be annoying to keep up with
Unfortunately, this is her last time teaching 200, but this class was very easy. It was a lot of reading, but she posted reading guides to help students read. Boring lectures, but the homework was mostly quizzes and in class asmts. The material itself may come familiar if you know all the issues around the world. She gave a lot of extra credit.
Lectures were very boring, would mispronounce random words when speaking. Overall a pretty easy class, two online quizzes every week. Only had 2 tests, the midterm and the final and the final was online. Offers a lot of extra credit.
Talks more about her past life than anything related to class, very unprofessional, and rude towards students. Stay clear, IYKYK
she CAN be really nice.. she has had a lot of random experiences she'll talk abt instead of course info. if you wanted a study guide for a midterm you will probably only get it the day before (if you get it at all). you can def survive the classes but it wont be the easiest
honestly it's a blessing she is retiring so that no student has to go through her again. In my time this semester, I noticed she loves to go through student's work on the board in front of the whole class so that she can nitpick and tell you what she wants changed. Don't think she means to publicly humiliate, but she does. Super ditsy & bad w tech.
Lectures can be boring, but the class is pretty easy overall. Lots of quizzes and extra credit opportunities. Definitely check out unstuckstudy - their tools really helped me prepare for the tests. Not the most organized professor, but worth taking if you need a gen ed.
My dad passed away the week of the midterm and she didn't excuse my absences. We agreed that I would take an Incomplete in the course until I took the midterm at the beginning of next semester, but she gave me a 0 anyways. When I emailed her about it, she ghosted me.
